The way I see it is if the Republicans really wants photo ID for voting then you don't pass laws right before an election you pass it after and them make sure everyone has it before the next election.

To me these laws were not passed for voter fraud they were passed for suppression just because of the timing.

The crux of the issue is that Republican simply don't want everyone who's eligible to vote to actually vote. While they couch their rhetoric in populist terms their entire strategy is anti-democratic and openly reliant on apathy and suppression. That's how we get people predicting a depressed black voter turnout as if such a thing is inherently good, never mind that such a desire is intrinsically racist.

I really liked this part. lol

So here we are a few weeks away from the general election in November and hidden away on back pages of local newspapers it is quietly stated that if you are voting in your regular polling place you do not need ID.

Kind of underhanded as far as I concerned.

Salt Lake Tribune endorsement: Too Many Mitts

In considering which candidate to endorse, The Salt Lake Tribune editorial board had hoped that Romney would exhibit the same talents for organization, pragmatic problem solving and inspired leadership that he displayed here more than a decade ago. Instead, we have watched him morph into a friend of the far right, then tack toward the center with breathtaking aplomb. Through a pair of presidential debates, Romney’s domestic agenda remains bereft of detail and worthy of mistrust.

Therefore, our endorsement must go to the incumbent, a competent leader who, against tough odds, has guided the country through catastrophe and set a course that, while rocky, is pointing toward a brighter day. The president has earned a second term. Romney, in whatever guise, does not deserve a first.

Rich Lowry would not have permitted that. Steyn had some very witty obits for the Atlantic Monthly, but McGovern's passing calls for a more sober and reflective style. Moreover, Steyn has gotten angrier since then and might not have been able to turn in the respectful piece needed. Yes, NR made the right choice giving the obit to Fund.

Gday GDF,

Just for accuracy.
Voting isn't compulsory in Australia.

Everyone over 18 must be registered to vote, and you must go to a polling station and have your name marked off the roll.

Whether you vote after that is up to you.
This does mean that most who cross their name off do vote.

You can get a fine for not getting your name crossed off, however they accept a lot of excuses for why you didn't and remove the fine.

With absentee and early voting so prevalent now I think a simple solution here would be to give a $500 refundable tax credit to anyone is listed as having voted. It could be paid for many times over by removing deductions on second home mortgages and eliminating the distinction between earned and unearned income.

"Someone who works primarily for the financial rewards shouldn't be working."

Simplistic nonsense, as long as the benefits don't determine the vote / opinion it doesn't count for any less simply because there are benefits to expressing it. If the Republican Party was genuinely the more popular party you'd support the idea, instead you oppose it because you're self described as "anti-egalitarian." You actually hope that the black vote is depressed, which is incredibly disgusting.

There was a beautiful cherry red airplane at Half Moon Bay airport the other morning - circa 1940s-50s - probably 2 seater (could have been four - long cockpit) - single prop. I almost stopped to take a pic for you so you could identify it. Looked a lot like the pic in your avatar, only less muscle-carish.

The Zero did fairly poorly against the B-17E and F (the B-17G was not deployed to the Pacific, from what I have read) and the B-24. It's lack of armor and self sealing fuel tanks left it very vulnerable to being set on fire by Armor-Piercing Incendiary (API) rounds fired by the B-17's .50 cals.

I'm disgusted with the Foreign Policy "debate".

Yeah, I know, it hasn't happened yet, but we already know the six "questions", and given the previous debates and already publicized positions we know what is going to happen.

Incredibly, according to the format and the questions, most of the world doesn't exist.

This whole debate thing is a sad, sad statement about "democracy" in America. Instead of discussing issues what is important is the popularity the next day. These "debates" are more like DWTS voting than anything about actual policy and the future of these United States.

Supreme Court decisions? Sorry, too boring.

The obstinate Senate blocking several important treaties? Who cares!

Trading relations with our neighbors? Mañana.

Big picture stuff (e.g., climate change, global disease eradication efforts, space travel, etc.)? B O R I N G.

But, we'll have a zillion polls the next day telling us who "won". At least ABC gives voters 9 votes (well, I think they're down to 8 this week) per phone line for DWTS. Maybe the pollsters should do likewise for their favorite demographics?

When I was young the YMCA where I lived had a 22 cal rifle club where they taught safety, if you scored in the top 10 of the club you used to get to travel to the other YMCAs in the state that had Rifle clubs and compete against them. It was a lot of fun for a kid glad I got to do it.

Romney is a Mormon. They don't agree on Jesus either.

Heh, no kidding. According to the Mormon's "Jesus" is a sibling of Satan (and perhaps some others) and are part of some big master play. For the "liberal" Christian like Obama the person they refer to as "Jesus" was a nice guy and good teacher who ran into nasty problems with power authorities. Neither are the same as Western orthodoxy, but likewise the two are quite different.

I think in this case, though, Mormons are somewhat insulated by Romney's personality. I don't presume to know anything about his spiritual life, but he's such an abnormal-seeming person I don't see it reflecting on other Mormons.

Yeah, a welfare check can't disqualify you from firearms ownership unless it ends in an involuntary commitment to a mental institution. It does sound like you might not be the first person I suggest own a gun, but you haven't described anything that would legally prevent you from it.

Here's ATF form 4473, look at question 11 a through l. If you can honestly answer yes to A and no to B through L then you can purchase a firearm.

The former priest of my father's parish is heavy into electric model trains. When he was transferred, getting all the trains packed up was a nightmare. He had a box of clothes, a lot of books, and then TRAINS.

I suggested that he could donate them to the church, we could lay tracks all around the perimeter of the sanctuary, and then the collection could be brought up by coal car, instead of in those long-handled baskets.

But no, he took the lot.

Such as the Billy Graham organization, which some evangelicals/fundamentalists are calling out for dropping Mormonism from their list of cults/non-Christian groups, in order to endorse Romney.

Yet I agree with Obdicut - Romney is not going to be the "typical" Mormon because he's not only part of the 1 percent but he's part of the 1 per mil. That is, the Romney's are richer than 1 out of a 1000 Americans, and people just can't relate to them. To many Americans the Romney's are "The Rich", not "The Mormons".

those space age blanket-thingies
MRE's
toothbrushes, soap, and a little towel
unnerwear
those heat pack things
wet wipes
tarp & a rope
flashlights
a couple of scout knives (among 6 packs)
a water filter system
basic first aid kit
extra socks
feminine things
emergency contact info
probably a few other things I'm forgetting here

Notice the lack of anything that might kill a zombie. Obviously poor planning on Mr. EmmmieG's part.

The basic problem is that you not only have to purchase the resources, but you also have to store them until the time of need and train people in their use. All that costs a lot of money up front and it is difficult to justify investments in such 'inactive reserves' of equipment to Congress. Moreover, deciding when to dip into that stockpile can also be an issue.

Exactly. Though, I have seen a few sites saying Katrina shows that it is time to either reform or get rid of the PCA.

Yes, but from a politician's standpoint, pushing a bill to do that through Capitol Hill has to be worth the amount of screaming that will be directed at that Congressman/Senator: "Senator Parker wants to repeal the Posse Comitatus Act so that the Army can be used to herd all dissenters into FEMA Camps!!1" What's worse is that more people than you'd think would believe that line of malarkey, even if only partially.

I saw that earlier. Very appropriate usage of the word "tease." :-/

Yes, but the full trailer comes out on Tuesday, so at least the payoff will come quickly.

This is what the skies looked like for me.

Los Angeles, 1994, or was it 1993? Can't remember exactly, but I remember the apartment complex's swimming pool full of cinders and ash, and watching fires burn on the hillside.

Oddly enough, haven't had any fires in Portland. *stops to wring out socks* Can't imagine why not.

I'm afraid I might end up rooting for Ben Kingsley.

re: #247 ProGunLiberal

Realistically, the only way for the US to deal with that level of disaster is to use the normal military.

But that isn't gonna happen. The Posse Comitatus Act. That law needs serious reform.

We use the 'full' military, as in Joint Task Force Andrew in Miami. There was even a Navy submarine tender involved. The only impact of posse comitatus was that the only troops with loaded weapons were the Florida National Guard, because they were kept under the Governor's control. I think much of the reaction to 9/11 has weakened it even more.

Make it an enlisted service, guaranteed manpower and mobile.

Yep. And we will be stuck here until a) Sanity arrives or b) something worse than Katrina comes along.

Should also note, the Waldo Canyon fire got impeded in its spread by an HOA. up in that area. Apparently, that Homeowners Situation were mini-dictators about what could be in your yard, and how far from the house those things could be. Probably saved a good chunk of the city. Because the fire suddenly was somewhere where the amount of fuel plunged.

OT.
I have a question.

Why has both the Catholic church and the Boy Scouts of America gotten away with fuckin' little kids with little to no serious backlash?

Unfortunately, that was Colorado Springs, June 2012.

I live about 4.6 miles from what was the Evacuation Zone.

I actually had a plan, that, if it had come to it gotten the hell out of the city via Hwy 24, hit I-70, and go to Denver, and arrange something with any friends I could contact. Stupid, but it was an impulse plan.

Weregild

the first part of this compound word is the same "were", man, which still survives in modern english in the word "werewolf", man-wolf

the cool thing about this is that it is the same word as latin "vir", man, both from the hypothesized indo-european root *"uiHro", supposed to mean "freeman", which also survives in the irish gaelic word "fer"
