They're really selective about when/if to intervene in "god's will." Do they object to fetal surgery that saves/repairs otherwise doomed fetii? How about heart bypass surgery, or chemotherapy, isn't that a subversion of god's will?

Simply sickening:

This week Romney apparently believes that it should be up to the states to decide whether or not a spouse or child of gay and lesbian men and women should have the right to visit their loved ones in the hospital. He believes that being able to visit a dying spouse in the hospital is a "privilege," not a right. Following mixed messages from Romney regarding his pledged support for the federal anti-gay-marriage amendment, Romney campaign adviser Bay Buchanan told Buzzfeed's Chris Geidner, "Governor Romney also believes, consistent with the 10th Amendment, that it should be left to states to decide whether to grant same-sex couples certain benefits, such as hospital visitation rights and the ability to adopt children."

I think I found a new favorite contemporary author:

If you have ever agreed that the Democrats are going to take away your guns, then shove your fucking whining back in your pie-hole.

Hey, we seriously stopped battling the NRA shortly after the Brady Bill passed back in 1993, and it’s been almost two decades since we’ve given up the fight. We got trounced so severely by our nation’s love of guns that Democrats don’t even discuss it any more. And there are plenty of gun-totin’ Democrats who like to shoot, which inevitably evinces surprise from conservatives, because everybody knows how much liberals hate guns. It’s just how things are. When a Democrat gets in office, he wants to remove every handgun.

AND, he writes Science-Fiction!!!. Which, of course, is a pre-req for being a "favorite" author.

And yes, the NRA tells us that although Obama has done absolutely nothing to restrict gun access, even loosening it in some instances, that is merely a subtle plot to lure us into a false sense of security before we are all disarmed and herded into the FEMA gay-Islamic-secular-multicultural re-education camps...

Point is that "voter fraud" rarely involves voters presenting fake ID, it involves organizations tampering with citizens' access by destrying registration forms, publish notifications with false dates (as maricopa County AZ has now done *twice*) or these sorts of letters targeted at specific voter groups.

For years and years, whenever I made chicken soup, I tried to get my kids to eat the chicken. I made chicken pot pie, chicken fricassee, chicken patties, chicken chow mein. There was NO WAY I could disguise the fact that this was the soup chicken. My kids just refused to eat "used" chicken.

Zedushka also refused to eat it, even though he told me that his mother would save the soup chicken and then serve it in family dinners for a week. I said "so then you must like it." He said "NO I FREAKING HATED IT!"

What's B&G? I tried serving the chicken over rice, over noodles, baked in a crust. NADA. The only thing that kinda worked was making chopped chicken kreplach (little chicken-filled doughs, like ravioli or won ton) but they were a lot of work and only used a little bit of the chicken.

Just reverse the order. Roast the chicken, use the carcass (and everyone's scraps) to make soup. If one doesn't give you a strong enough chicken flavor, freeze it and use two.

They'll never know!

I don't worry about getting anyone to eat the used chicken any more.

Wanna make a great stock? Save shrimp shells and simmer them. I used to sell 9 gallons of my white seafood chowder (leftover fish scraps and veggies and taters) on a Friday. It was sold Ala Carte.

It's a combination dish that was created in the US, something like a combination of a quiche and bread pudding with breakfast meats. You take a nice Italian bread that's laden with extra ingredients, like a Focaccia, whip it up with the fried breakfast meats and eggs, let it rest overnight in the fridge and pop in the oven for 45-60 mins in the am. A good pan usually lasts a couple days, and people like it for brunch /lunch as well.

I was making something like that when I was 18, working at a retirement home. Good stuff. Also, for quiches, brown a pie crust, add ingredients to shell, *add eggs, sour cream, heavy cream and a shot of brown mustard*. Top with shredded cheese. Bake.

*mix in different bowl and pour over top

I collect antique cookbooks, and for years I have wanted to make a cookbook using these antique recipes, but updated for modern appliances, giving both the original recipe and the updated one. The problem is I'm not sure how to go about this. A lot of these old recipes require HUGE AMOUNTS of ingredient.

104 Sheila Broflovski  Wed, Oct 24, 2012 5:14:06am

Also, a lot of these antique cookbooks have recipes for stuff other than food, like cosmetics and medicine. And OPIUM and LAUDANUM and COCAINE were frequent ingredients.

I watched Zito pitch the other night in the NLCS. Off the fuckin' hook. He also threw a great game 3 in the NLDS - the first of our six consecutive elimination game wins. If he stays in his groove tonight, then it's just a matter of people like Marco Scutaro (who batted .500 or so in the post season) stringing together a few base hits...we don't need home runs.

I got to see Verlander pitch in person a couple of years ago in Baltimore. Had box seats near the 1B dugout. Every pitch he threw sounded like a cannon when it hit the catcher's mitt. Never saw anyone pitch in person like that before (including people like Clemens or Gooden). He actually threw faster as the game went on. Back then he was a thrower. Now, he's a pitcher and even more dangerous.

The Hamas terrorists in Gaza are ramping up the amount of rockets fired into Israel. Since the IDF retaliated I expect the UN to condemn Israel.

Fresh rocket, mortar barrage brings total to 72

Palestinians fired eight rockets and mortar shells into the Ashkelon Regional Council on Wednesday afternoon, the latest in a barrage of rockets raining down on southern Israel since Tuesday night.

The Iron Dome successfully intercepted a Grad rocket, the eight it has struck down since Tuesday night.

Palestinian terrorists fired 67 rockets and mortar shells into southern Israel since Wednesday morning, injuring five and sending local residents fleeing for cover.

IAF strikes targeting Palestinian rocket-launching squads killed four Hamas operatives but did little to stem the flow of rockets.

Hamas's armed wing, the Al-Qassam brigades, took responsibility Wednesday for both a barrage of rockets unleashed against Israel since Tuesday night and the bomb that critically injured an IDF officer along the Gaza border on Tuesday. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) took responsibility for the Gaza border bomb.

In a statement posted on its website, Hamas said it was responsible for rockets, which it said were a response to IDF air strikes from 7:00 to 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. It also said that on Tuesday it "detonated a roadside bomb near Israeli infantry soldiers east of Khanyounis city."

Of the projectiles fired by the terrorists, 22 landed in the Eshkol region while 21 landed in the Lachish region, according to the Israel Police. An additional 10 rockets landed in the South on Wednesday morning. The Iron Dome intercepted seven Grad rockets, according to the IDF. The barrage followed 10 rockets fired on Tuesday evening, making a total of 77. Five homes were damaged, according to Israel Radio.

The Hamas terrorists in Gaza are ramping up the amount of rockets fired into Israel. Since the IDF retaliated I expect the UN to condemn Israel.

Fresh rocket, mortar barrage brings total to 72

The Palestinians know they can do this for a week, maybe two before the IDF starts seriously talking about taking action. Hamas will push this to the last second and back off.

Video: 'Estelle' taunts IDF before being boarded

Footage taken from sim cards detailing last moments of ship sent home by activists via carrier pigeons.
...
Activists have charged that the navy used excessive force when they boarded the ship and arrested them.

In particular they noted that the soldiers used a taser gun, but none of the video footage released so far reflects that.

Knowing that the navy would confiscate their electronic equipment, the activists placed sim cards into the bands of homing pigeons that were on board the 53-meter ship.

NC Voters Voting for Romney Had Their Votes Show Up as For Obama

"The presidential election is just around the corner and voting issues have already become a problem in Guilford County.

On Monday, several voters complained that their electronic ballot machine cast the wrong vote. All the complaints were made by people who voted at the Bur-Mil Park polling location.

One of the voters, Sher Coromalis, says she cast her ballot for Governor Mitt Romney, but every time she entered her vote the machine defaulted to President Obama.

“I was so upset that this could happen,” said Coromalis.

Guilford County Board of Elections Director George Gilbert says the problem arises every election. It can be resolved after the machine is re-calibrated by poll workers.

...Elections officials say the machines have been fixed as of Tuesday, and no problems have been reported since.

It seems like a story like this is reported every election. You would think they would have the problems fixed by now since they had 4 years to fix these problems from the last time.

The "big bombshell" news of the morning seems to the the emails on Beghazi
E-mails: White House knew of extremist claims in Benghazi attack

Two hours after first being notified of an attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, a government e-mail to the White House, the State Department and the FBI said an Islamist group had claimed credit, according to a copy obtained by CNN.

An initial e-mail was sent while the attack was still underway, and another that arrived two hours later -- sent from a State Department address to various government agencies including the executive office of the president -- identified Ansar al-Sharia as claiming responsibility for the attack on its Facebook page and on Twitter.

Which is, of course, is what we already knew.
In case you're curious here's some background on the group:
Know Your Ansar al-Sharia

From Sanaa to Benghazi, Cairo to Casablanca, radical new jihadi groups have adopted the same name in recent months. Is it all just a coincidence?

Long story short: It's a name a lot of different groups adopted, they aren't necessarily all connected. In the case of the Benghazi militias it's a complicated muddy picture with little central leadership, members of one group folded into another. It's a very loosely knit group.

This is what Gloria Allred is up to:

Mitt Romney
Allegedly LIED in Court To Screw Over Friend's Wife

Mitt Romney LIED under oath when he testified in the divorce of his good friend and screwed the friend's wife out of a lot of money in the process ... so claims the ex-wife of Staples' founder Tom Stemberg.

Multiple sources connected with the divorce tell TMZ ... during Tom's uber nasty divorce case with ex-wife Maureen, Mitt Romney gave a deposition and testified during the trial that Staples was worth virtually nothing. Romney testified that the company was worth very little and Tom was a dreamer and "the dream continues."

Romney characterized the Staples stock as "overvalued," adding, "I didn't place a great deal of credibility in the forecast of the company's future."

Partly as a result of Romney's testimony, Maureen got relatively little in the divorce, but we're told just weeks after the divorce ended, Romney and Tom went to Goldman Sachs and cashed in THEIR stock for a fortune. Short story -- Romney allegedly lied to help his friend and screw the friend's wife over.

And there's more ...

The ex-wife of Staples founder Tom Stemberg is in probate court in Massachusetts to tell a judge she's OK with unsealing testimony that former Gov. Mitt Romney gave in her divorce case.

234 lawhawk  Wed, Oct 24, 2012 8:41:57am

So, why do we think that Hamas is trying to stir up the hornet's nest in Gaza by directly carrying out attacks against Israel in addition to their proxies in the PRCs or other terror groups like PIJ? What's their endgame? To try and make a mess leading up to US presidential elections? To influence the Israeli electorate in their election schedule?

One likely reason that comes to mind is that Syria and Iran are looking to take pressure off Assad, and an eruption of violence between Israel and Hamas would allow Assad to continue his crackdown without the high-visibility coverage usually seen with the ongoing Syrian civil war. All the actors in the region know that violence involving Israel tends to get more coverage than violence that doesn't involve Israel. Stirring up the pot in Gaza would help Assad relieve the pressure on his regime by shifting focus back onto Israel, rather than on the truly horrific war crimes and crimes against humanity engaged in by Assad in putting down the rebels and the rebel forces in retaliation for those acts.

They should read All Quiet on the Western Front. Even in WWI, bayonets weren't actually used that much. The entrenching tool was better.

Bayonets gained military prominence back when muzzle-loaders meant a long, long delay between shots. They also allowed riflemen to not need supporting pikemen. They're tactically good for those situations. They pretty much suck otherwise.

The Japanese used lots of bayonet charges in WWII-- one of the reasons their infantry took such heavy casualties.

It's really funny seeing the GOP shit all over their own face in terms of military knowledge in order to try to pretend Obama made some sort of dumb comment.

If a modern army unit is having to fight someone in close quarters with bayonets, then something went horribly wrong to get to that point - a surprise attack, a unit overrun by superior forces, etc. Modern armed forces train for that possibility, but they also trains and employs tactics and tools to prevent getting into that situation - namely having forces prepared in defensive positions with watch/oversight, the ability to call in support (air force, artillery, etc.), free fire zones, etc. The bayonet or utility knife is a weapon of last resort when you've got nothing left to fight with.

It's not as though you're going to lead off with a bayonet when you've got your sidearm or rifle available to take out your attacker before they get within arm's reach.

Thanks to GOP policies that provide corporate welfare to the ultra-rich Walmart heirs and make it easier for people like Romney to profit from throwing Americans out of work:

[Link: rockrivertimes.com...]

Sensata has emerged as a flashpoint in the controversy over Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s ties to China. Sensata workers have pleaded publicly with Romney to help save their jobs from being outsourced to China. Not only does Romney stand to profit from the outsourcing of these jobs through the stock he still owns in the company, his 2011 tax returns show he got a huge tax break by moving Sensata stock to a charity organization he controls — and that he continues to profit from Bain’s offshore holdings and tax avoidance strategies.

High unemployment? The national average is down to 7.8%, and in some parts of the country (Dakotas, Nebraska, etc.) the rate is below 5% due to the rush on fracking and oil-related industry. Some parts of the country are seeing higher unemployment (NJ for instance, which has higher unemployment than neighboring NY or CT or PA). (source here)

The economy is doing much better than when Obama took office, but is it humming along as well as we would hope for? Nope, but that is also due to reticence among GOPers to cut a deal on the debt ceiling, sequestration, and dealing with the already agreed-upon sunset of tax cuts (whether to extend, modify, or allow to end). The fight over the debt ceiling was unnecessary and harmed the economy with added uncertainty and higher costs to the government as a result. Refusal to make a deal on a new jobs plan also hurts - especially when GOPers claim that defense jobs can be harmed with defense cuts (the corollary being that if the government spends on infrastructure, it is creating jobs - just not the jobs that the GOPers are pushing for).

It's not like you're going to use your rifle when you have Hellfire on speed-dial.

I've enjoyed listening to the thundering silence from right-wing pols about how important the DOW is now that it's back to or above the levels it was when Obama took office.

Remember, the overall health of the economy is irrelevant. The only measure that matters with a Democrat in office is whichever measure is currently the worst.

Sheesh. I have three thoughts on Trump's idiotic proposal.

One, as we saw with him never having given up his Birtherism, he'll never be satisfied with whatever documents were released, so he'd never actually hold up his end of the bargain. Secondly, he's trying to set up a ridiculous trap where massive charitable donations hinge on the actions of the President, when in reality those donations are entirely under Trump's control and could go out this moment if wasn't such an media manipulating, con artist. Finally, in promoting this event so shamelessly he successfully caused a number of media organizations to publish all sorts of speculative, baseless RW smears about divorce papers, drug dealing and other BS sleaze.

Biden said about the terrorists who attacked our consulate and killed our people in Benghazi "We will find and bring to justice the men who did this."

Suspect in Libya Attack, in Plain Sight, Scoffs at U.S.

BENGHAZI, Libya — Witnesses and the authorities have called Ahmed Abu Khattala one of the ringleaders of the Sept. 11 attack on the American diplomatic mission here. But just days after President Obama reasserted his vow to bring those responsible to justice, Mr. Abu Khattala spent two leisurely hours on Thursday evening at a crowded luxury hotel, sipping a strawberry frappe on a patio and scoffing at the threats coming from the American and Libyan governments.

Libya’s fledgling national army is a “national chicken,” Mr. Abu Khattala said, using an Arabic rhyme. Asked who should take responsibility for apprehending the mission’s attackers, he smirked at the idea that the weak Libyan government could possibly do it. And he accused the leaders of the United States of “playing with the emotions of the American people” and “using the consulate attack just to gather votes for their elections.”

Mr. Abu Khattala’s defiance — no authority has even questioned him about the attack, he said, and he has no plans to go into hiding — offered insight into the shadowy landscape of the self-formed militias that have come to constitute the only source of social order in Libya since the fall of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi.

If we rushed in and killed a bunch of people now it would be called "grandstanding" to influence the election by the Right. God forbid any of our people got killed in the assault because they would hammer Obama to death about it. Also since our image in Libya is not currently total shit like it is in many middle eastern counties I imagine that the powers that be want to keep it that way by being careful. As in no collateral civilian deaths from bombs/drone missiles and no reflexive killing of people who later turn out not to have been involved.

This isn't like the movies where retaliation in the form of a seal team sniper bullet is delivered with the guys morning coffee the next day. If the guy really was involved in leading/planning/ordering the attack then we will get him, we have a pretty good record of hunting down and killing the people we want to lately. Or haven't you noticed that either?

In a pen and pad with reporters, senior WH adviser David Plouffe was just asked about this Trump statement and said the reaction should come from Boston because the mogul is “Mitt Romney’s biggest supporter. He (Romney) owns everything he says”

That seems on the money to me.

Trump had reached discredited joke status following the national humiliation he rabble-roused (forcing the first black president to show his papers a second time) and after his roasting at the White House Correspondent's Dinner. Romney made him relevant again, raising his profile and helping him have a platform for his bigoted conspiracy theories. On the same day Romney and Trump were to share a stage at their joint fundraiser, Trump used that increased visibility to book appearances on the network & cable morning shows, spreading his latest take on Birtherism. He also claimed Obama was a terrible student that somehow gamed his way into Columbia and Harvard (whining about his son not getting in and racial preferences), and claimed Bill Ayers wrote Dreams from my Father because Obama is too stupid to have written at that level (Ayers-ghostwriter-ism?).

Romney didn't bat an eye, and in fact he cynically explained his evening event and his lack of repudiating Trump to the press as part of how he gets to “50.1%” of the vote. Romney further raised campaign cash off of Trump's sleaze by raffling of a dinner with him.

Just hours before that joint Romney/Trump fundraiser the Romney campaign dogwhistled to the Birthers by releasing a photocopy of his own birth certificate to Reuters, something there is no standard of doing for presidential candidates. Then you had Romney's son Matt telling a Birther joke at a campaign event and later Romney himself getting in on the game and telling one himself.

Romney owns it.

Here's an interesting idea: Momentum builds for Gaza to secede, Israel and West Bank to become one

After decades of the "two states for two people" blueprint more or less dominating proposals for Israeli-Palestinian peace, a new paradigm is gaining momentum. Under this model, Israel absorbs the West Bank and its 2.5 million Palestinians, while Hamas-run Gaza becomes a separate entity aligned with the Middle East’s rising Islamist powers.

Such a development could potentially improve stability after decades of unresolved conflict, but it represents a blow to Palestinian statehood aspirations as well as to Israelis who see a Palestinian state as essential for their own security.

Only one question: Why is this a civil case and not a criminal one?

Bank of America sued for alleged mortgage fraud

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The Justice Department is seeking $1 billion from Bank of America, alleging the bank committed fraud by selling defective mortgages from a program it says was known within the bank as "the Hustle."

Those mortgages were purchased by government-backed mortgage finance firms Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, resulting in over $1 billion in losses for taxpayers and countless foreclosures, according to the complaint announced Wednesday the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

The suit alleges that "the Hustle" was a nickname for the bank's "High-Speed Swim Lane" or HSSL program, designed to streamline the mortgage origination process. But the government alleges it was "intentionally designed to process loans at high speed and without quality checkpoints, and which generated thousands of fraudulent and otherwise defective residential mortgage loans."

Bank of America sued for alleged mortgage fraud

It is not only that the banking industry deliberately targeted minorities and low-income persons for sub prime mortgages, but that they then tried to hide all the bad mortgages by bundling them into "securities." This is what caused the banking fail, not just low-income people buying properties they couldn't afford, but the banks trying to fob off the bad paper onto unsuspecting investors.

They're almost in line now that they've moved to R+3...certainly on the Romney-leaning side of current national polls but closer to the average. Recent polls currently range from R+4 (Rasmussen) to O+3 (Washington Times). The IBD/TIPP poll, which has leaned Democratic for much of the cycle, has moved sharply in the last couple days, from O+6 to O+2, which is sort of the mirror image of what's happening with Gallup.

There is no standard for defining the "Likely Voter" selection. Each pollster makes his own. PPP and Rasmussen do not use the same. There was talk years ago that Rassmussen did not use cells. Don't know if that has been fixed. He was said to be manipulated, closing in on reality as the election nears.

A post on the Americans for Prosperity Wisconsin website today claims the partisan, conservative organization will pay for people’s gas. The publicity stunt walks a fine campaign finance law line over a highly politicized topic – gas prices. From the AFP website:

When President Obama took office in January 2009, gas cost just $1.84 per gallon…To help relieve the pain at the pump and show Wisconsinites that there is a better way, AFP-Wisconsin will be paying the difference for you Tuesday, October 30th from 11am to 3pm at the Mount View Mobil Station (County Road NN exit on I-39) in Wausau.

I've been watching that too. Most of the drop happened the morning after the debate. Lots of hypotheses; mine is that some money moved to Romney because he acted like he's ahead and his national poll numbers continue to show a slight lead. The state polls, of course, show otherwise.

I've been watching that too. Most of the drop happened the morning after the debate. Lots of hypotheses; mine is that some money moved to Romney because he acted like he's ahead and his national poll numbers continue to show a slight lead. The state polls, of course, show otherwise.

I thought someone said the massive move to Romney came from one $17,500 trade for Romney. Anyone?

I see that various RWNJs are again predicting that black people will riot if Obama loses.
I think this is a kind of vicarious projection: The rightists won't riot if Obama wins (you can't make your SUV payment if you've been arrested) but they wish they could. Some few of them, Alex Jones dupes and other fringe dwellers, might misbehave in various ways (random shootings, a few bombs, many failed plots) but there will be no mass action, and certainly no organized uprising.
Meanwhile, the gun and ammunition bubble continues to expand, even after 4 years, with no end in sight. I think the bubble will only break when Obama completes his second term. At that point we will have about a thousand year supply of small arms ammunition and scary black guns being sold off cheap from storage units and suburban basements all over the country.

Nate Silver has noted that the different betting markets have wildly different odds, which obviously shouldn't happen if the market is a properly functioning one.

Intrade did a weird thing over the last 18 hrs or so. The Prez fell about 10 relative points against Romney, then began to recover most of it. Can't find any real-life reason except the Trump BS, or the rather dense Romney blurbs in the media (Memorandum).

This might be the reason

I'm not sure if you'd be able to see that. There are no lots that big for sale, so anyone placing that big a bet would have to buy up shares at a bunch of different price points, which would obscure the size of the buy. It's possible, but I'm not sure it's observable.

But hey, Romney's winning in Pakistan! They like leaders who will ask permission before killing their terrorists.

This is all so hilarious given how they themselves reacted when Obama won. Fucking assholes.

I didn't see that one. Sounds like an arbitrage opportunity if true.

Thanks--Seems like a small sum to move such a prominent betting line. Glad he lost his lunch money on a pump n' dump.

Lunch?? Yeah. BBL

Yep. Glad the nuts aren't into revolvers or lever actions & only into a few exotic bolt actions. Despite the morons, it's still easy to find the good stuff cheap.

Now reloading supplies are going to start getting scarce again, I fear. Probably should pick up some more powder & primers.

Used to be a musician who spent all his days standing in a Viking costume in front of a bank on 6th Avenue. He wasn't a Viking.

Shhh... Your attempts at nuance are stepping on his narrative.

I guess that's from Gallup today

Obama approval 53/42

RV 48/47 Obama
LV 50/47 Romney

Apparently non-voters approve of Obama.

No Israel on that list.
