New Obama Web Ad feat. Lena Dunham Sends Right Wing into Fainting Couch Frenzy

Apocalyptic apoplexy
Politics • Views: 39,292

Tonight on Twitter, I noticed right wing nincompoop and CNN contributor Erick Erickson coming unglued, fantasizing about a depraved world burning in the fires of hell:

Of course, that made me want to immediately go and see whatever it was that put Erickson in such a wondrously crazed apocalyptic mood, so here it is: the latest web ad from the Obama campaign, featuring Lena Dunham with some mildly racy yet undeniably cute reasons to vote for Barack Obama.

I’ll bet Erick Erickson is a whole lot of fun at parties.

I'll bet $10,000 of Romney's money that he isn't.

Does Erickson even realize that he just brought this to the attention of folks (like me) who wouldn't have paid it any attention?

I love it. Great advertising. Screen presence, engaging, good writing.

No wonder the RW is lost on this. They are trained to absorb Fox and infomercials. This is just too much.

This is funny. And it doesn't hurt that she is cute.

I can think of a few hundred million things I'd rather do than spend eternity in Erick Erickson's heaven.

This is an Obama ad referenced in the Lena Dunham article in Slate.
Very much in tune with today's gynothreads:

That? That is what has his knickers in a bunch? I wonder if he collapsed hard enough to damage the cushions on his fainting couch?

But sex is bad and evil and disgusting. Real Americans never talk about it!

She wasn't talking about sex, she was talking about voting.

Kind of interesting to think of the reaction if Mitt's camp had produced this same ad.
I guess I'm not part of the target demographic of early 20's females so I'm not impressed. But this is what advertising executives do when they're not peddling boner pills and beer.

It's a cute enough ad. I feel silly for thinking she was related to POTUS for some reason. REmember Dunham is his mother's maiden name. I've heard Girls is a nice little show though.

If you don't already follow Chuck Grassley on Twitter, you need to. It's incredibly surreal... Most of the time, you'd think his tweets were composed by a 10 year old. And sometimes, you get real gems like this:

27 Killgore Trout  Thu, Oct 25, 2012 6:17:45pm

I like politics but campaigns are always tough for me to not hate. Both campaigns have had difficulty with factual claims in ads but that's par for the course. I will hand it to Mitt that he has done a much better job than I expected. Although I'm unpersuaded I do have to applaud his tactic of avoiding talk shows, late night comedians, pop culture BS. His campaign is no more serious than Obama's but I like the effort towards at least pretending to be serious on a cosmetic level.

Little to no chance in this world Romney's camp would produce an ad like this, so your speculation is wasted.

As far as how the left would react if someone not liked by the left did something like this, there are very few progressive authoritarians out there.

Sounded like what was wanted was a "buy it, build it, forget it" plan. Yes, in a perfect world buy, then upgrade parts (to include motherboard, socket, and chip) as required. An 1155 now and a 2011 (even at a 3 year reduced price) will still probably sum out to more than just a 2011 now.

My sister was on BCPs at the age of 14 to control her raging endometriosis. It kept her from going fetal from pain and losing 20 school days a year in her teens. It also probably kept her from being infertile. She has two beautiful daughters and her first sexual experience was with the father of those gorgeous girls. BCPs cause promiscuity like umbrellas cause rain.

The right wing blogosphere is going amazingly nuts about this video. Apparently they've never seen anything so despicable.

When you think about it the video pushes all their buttons. A young white female talking in sexual double entendres about voting for the black President. Republicans are at their heart sexually repressed angsty white misogynists, so it makes sense that this would hit the right wing blogosphere like a perfect storm.

Kind of interesting to think of the reaction if Mitt's camp had produced this same ad.

re: #27 Killgore Trout

I like politics but campaigns are always tough for me to not hate. Both campaigns have had difficulty with factual claims in ads but that's par for the course. I will hand it to Mitt that he has done a much better job than I expected. Although I'm unpersuaded I do have to applaud his tactic of avoiding talk shows, late night comedians, pop culture BS. His campaign is no more serious than Obama's but I like the effort towards at least pretending to be serious on a cosmetic level.

Even more so because it's inaccurate. Romney doesn't avoid talk shows and late night comedians. Leno and plenty of others have had him on their shows. He only avoids certain shows where he's afraid someone might actually ask him a tough question (The View, Letterman, etc). That hardly qualifies as being serious and if you can't stand up to Joy Behar, you're no profile in courage either.

Hell, we've had them for over two decades. In the 5-county metro area, we probably average a death a year from the little fuckers, usually attacking people using lawnmowers (go figure).

Top Romney Adviser: If You Own A Microwave, You Aren’t Really Poor

Yet the access of low-income Americans—those earning less than $20,000 in real 2009 dollars—to devices that are part of the “good life” has increased. The percentage of low-income households with a computer rose to 47.7% from 19.8% in 2001. The percentage of low-income homes with six or more rooms (excluding bathrooms) rose to 30% from 21.9% over the same period.

Appliances? The percentage of low-income homes with air-conditioning equipment rose to 83.5% from 65.8%, with dishwashers to 30.8% from 17.6%, with a washing machine to 62.4% from 57.2%, and with a clothes dryer to 56.5% from 44.9%.

The percentage of low-income households with microwave ovens grew to 92.4% from 74.9% between 2001 and 2009. Fully 75.5% of low-income Americans now have a cell phone, and over a quarter of those have access to the Internet through their phones.

Oh yeah, living the good life with my microwave and my cell phone. It's enough to make me forget about the wealth disparity in this country!

I went at 8am on Tuesday. I walked in, handed over my voter card and driver's license and got my little code for the voting machine. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes and still had time to get breakfast before work.

What does a long running monied-type Republican to do when asked about a Tea Party favorite topic? Why, play dumb, of course:

Pence, Gregg & Boneham talk trucks, marijuana, creationism and more at third debate

[...]

Trish Kolberg of Granger asked the candidates about teaching creationism in science classes. She referred to a bill passed earlier this year by the Indiana Senate that would have allowed districts to incorporate creationism into their curriculums – as long as they added other religious teachings as well.

House Speaker Brian Bosma, a Republican, killed the bill, saying it likely ran afoul of the U.S. Constitution.

During the debate, the candidates largely sidestepped the question. Gregg ignored it completely, choosing instead to use his time to talk about his other education policies, including plans to create preschool pilot program. After the debate, Gregg said that current law allows the Old Testament of the Bible to be taught as literature.

“That’s a good place to leave this,” he said.

Pence said during the debate that he preferred to leave curriculum questions up to local school boards. Afterwards, he said he was unfamiliar with the creationism legislation and wouldn’t comment on it specifically.

[...]

The issue of the legislation in question has been quite dominant in political columns in the state, has been used repeatedly to attack the Republicans by certain Democrats who want to make it an issue... and Pence acts like he's never heard of it.

He must not spend much time in his home state or reading the local news there.

The only reason I have a microwave is that someone in my building threw one out. My disability here in Canada is a great deal more than those on disability in the U.S. I know because my wife is a U.S. citizen and disabled. She also has to pay utility bills on her subsidized dwelling while I don't.

The brief also alleges the board’s action was taken “to sterilize the school of words, pictures, or ideas that have a tangential association to religion. ... The Board has punished Freshwater’s facilitating the critical evaluation of a scientific theory solely because the competing ideas are consistent with multiple religions” and therefore turned school administrators into “religion police.”

do they till make VHS players? I need one; I've got a ton of tapes I haven't been able to watch since my old player crapped out, and Best Buy is all about the DVD and blueray.

I saw a little device that converted VHS to DVD and I think it had a VHS "player" built into it. And it was pretty cheap. I don't recall exactly but I think it was less than $50.

Yeah the reward for the sweep in the ALCS is the longest break between games since February. Same thing happened to them in 2006, they wait a week for the World Series and then come out missing something..

"Technics" was an old Matsushita brand, a company that finally changed its name to its most famous brand (Panasonic). I'm sure somewhere in Japan there is a store with a "Technics" turntable on the shelf.

I remember walking in some of the neighborhoods and coming across old stores that, even in the mid 2000's, still had those old analog adding machines (unsold, with their original boxes) in their windows.

Just like most other biblical literalists, McErickson obsesses over some text while ignoring other parts altogether. Example: Dunham's LUST (though clearly satirical) is a sign of the apocalypse. It's the only one of the deadly sins that conservatives care about, other than sloth, which freaks them out, but not as much.

All those other sins--Greed, Pride, Envy, Wrath, and especially Gluttony--are badges of honor in modern conservatism.

Well considering states rights were used to justify slavery and later segregation and bans on inter-racial marriages, your nauseousness is not without reason. I mean I know it sounds contradictory but I really think there are certain things that the states shouldn't be able to decide because certain things like equality are something that a state shouldn't have the right to limit. Same thing with the Feds too. That's why I proposed constitutional amendment on gay marriage bothers me. We'd be amending the Constitution to limit freedom. And honestly outside of Prohibition, we have never codified taking away a right into the Constitution. Now, we have many a time used the Constitution to grant people rights which is another reason why I'd support an amendment allowing gay marriage.

People like Erickson probably get out the liquid paper and white out this passage..

From the New Testament, Romans 13:1-7
Submission to Governing Authorities

1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

It's a stupid "joke" for a couple reasons. One, it's not even funny. Two, it totally distorts what liberal ideology is all about. And three it's whiny right wing resentment shit. That's primarily because they pick and choose which amendments past the 10th (and really, even those in the original 10) they like to recognize as valid. They've tried to make a "case" for pretty much overturning the bulk of amendments on the grounds that they're "not what the Founders intended."

Unless you're having a group seance with all the men who signed the Constitution, you have no way of knowing you're doing what the founders intended. Plus, figure in the fact that the founders had different views. After all, that's why we had to have the Great Compromise that ended up giving one legislative house two representatives even (The Senate) and the other based on population (The House.) And of course the infamous 3/5's compromise too. Plus the later fights after the Constitution was created whether to have a Bill of Rights or not. Those who wanted a Bill of Rights I think were proven correct ultimately. Hell, let's not forget that some of the Founders were perfectly content with the Articles of Confederation. Patrick Henry, who from what I understand has a huge right wing following now didn't want to ratify the new document. Anyhow history major rant off but I really resent when pseudo historians try to act like the Founders always agreed.

Very liberal Democrat daughter, staunch Republican father. The two constantly spar over political philosophy.

During one discussion, father moves conversation to daughter's GPA. She says she has a 4.0 because she studies all the time, leaving her no time to party or have a social life.

Father then asks her about her roommate. She says her roomie is barely getting by with a 2.0, because she parties all the times and is really popular on campus.

He asks her why she doesn't go to the Dean and ask for 1.0 to be redistributed from her GPA to her roommate's so that they can both have a 3.0 GPA. Daughter fires back that that wouldn't be fair, because she worked real hard for her GPA.

Father quips "Welcome to the Republican Party."

I wonder if Erick is as outraged at Dinesh D'Sousa's actual lust. Oh wait, D'Sousa's a fellow conservative so it's not a big deal that he's actually a moral hypocrite.

Speaking of D'Wingnut, I was at my local Kroger a couple of hours ago, when I saw a couple of cardboard rack full of DVDs of his execrable movie at the U-Scan. I was so pissed, I wish I could have just flung them all over the store.

Fuuuuuuuu...

re: #307 Targetpractice

Sounds just like my father, back when he was a conservative Republican.

He wasn't funny either.

It would be more accurate if the young girl worked hard but only got a C because the professor was old buddies with the parents of some of the slackers in the class and he gave those kids the A's.

Donald Trump was just on Letterman. In addition to his usual birther nonsense, he cried about how "China is ripping our heart out."

Then Trump tried to pimp his line of shirts and neckties. Dave asked "Where are these made?" Trump claims he doesn't know.

Shirts made in Bangladesh. Ties made in China.

You know what they say about satire, that there's always a bit of truth in it. But yeah, I remember reading that back in '09 and thinking it was so true because there are so many people who seem to think only they understand the Constitution and yet constantly utter crap like what the father in the article says.

Yeah but it's a right wing fairy tale. So, it doesn't conform to real life.

The Donald is going looney tunes. When does it stop being funny watching confused old men making fools of themselves. Eastwood wasn't enough apparently.

Awesome. Just like Romney's gonna get tough on China while Bain shuts down factories here and moves them to China. Yeah, those Chinese are shaking in their boots over the prospect of a Romney presidency. Sigh.

sorry, but 2000 and 2004 were close too. We have a bad economy and the guy in office is taking a beating for it. It's the way it has been forever. We have a divided electorate, even in a blow out like 2008 the loser got 47%

If the President who killed Bin Laden, ended the war in Iraq, saved the auto industry, guided the country through the economic crisis, and passed the first real healthcare reform legislation in decades, wasn't a black guy named Barack Obama.......A campaign where Donald Trump is in contact with the Presidential candidate "all the time," and where members of the party kept on outing themselves as disgusting misogynists with insane ideas on rape and abortion.......would not be polling tied with that President.

I don't get what the fuss is about. I thought the ad was humorous, creative and at the same time, to the point. It made me smile.

Why are the wingnuts angry? Because of the sexual/virginity innuendo? It seemed pretty tame compared to a lot of the other stuff I've seen in our popular culture.

Is it Lena Duham? I looked her up and she doesn't seem to be particularly controversial, though she certainly fits the East Coast progressive mold.

Like I said, I don't get it. *shrugs*

I think you are wrong. I think with unemployment hovering around 8% any president would have a tough go of it. I am not saying it is his fault, but when you are starting with 47% or so voting against you just because there is D after your nameit doesn't take a whole lot to make it a very tight race. Not to mention that 5-10% that will actually change sides probably aren't the most informed voters. I bet if you asked them who Akin or or Mourdock were the majority would have no clue.

I'd agree with that, the historical high for reelection has been 7.2%, and that was Reagan in '84. If Obama really does win reelection, it will be an historical precedent in more ways than one.

Really, part of what's kept Obama in the race has been the fact that, when counting "solid" blue states, Obama started with (IIRC) 230 some points in the EC, compared to Romney's 190. If the situations were reversed, we'd be talking about President Romney at this point in the game.

If this was white guy vs. white guy, and the Republican candidate was more John McCain or GWB than Mitt Romney, I would agree with you.

But the constant flip-flopping, the "The rich don't have enough money, the poor have too much," the "I can't tell you if I support fair pay for women," the party of "legitimate, forcible, God's gift, rape rape" that has been the Republican Party and Mitt Romney this year? They would have been crushed. Even with a "bad first debate."

And when I say "why is this race still close," I'm not talking about something like the race being within 5 points. Obviously, this country is too partisan for a TRUE blowout.

But Romney's campaign actually polling AHEAD in National polls? You will not convince me that this would happen with a Clintonesque white Democrat as President.

335 BongCrodny  Thu, Oct 25, 2012 9:54:02pm

There's some Grade A snark in this article, courtesy of Yahoo News:

Meat Loaf backs Romney, citing candidate's backbone

DEFIANCE, Ohio—Mitt Romney's campaign rally here at a high school football stadium took an unusual turn Thursday night when the Republican nominee received a surprise endorsement from what could only be described as a rather unexpected guest.

Several thousand supporters were listening to a pre-rally performance by country star John Rich, when Rich interrupted his set to invite a "special guest" to the stage.

The surprise visitor: the rock star turned occasional actor Meat Loaf.
Dressed in a baggy black suit accented with multicolor sequins, the singer, who rose to fame from his star turn in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," dramatically stormed the stage to the shock of many of those in the audience, who turned to each other with questioning faces.
The aging rocker, perhaps best known for his 1994 hit "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)," performed a series of power ballads familiar only to the most devoted Meat Loaf fans. In between, he offered a meandering and sometimes slurred endorsement of the GOP nominee, explaining that he'd never before publicly backed a political candidate.

'This is the most important election in the history of the United States," Meat Loaf explained. "Because there has storm clouds come over the United States. There is thunderstorms over Europe. There are hail storms--and I mean major hail storms--in the Middle East. There are storms brewing through China, through Asia, through everywhere… I want you to know there is one man who will stand tall in this country and fight the storm and bring the United States back to what it should be. Gov. Mitt Romney!"

Meat sounds like he was maybe one beer away from the John Belushi Germans-bombed-Pearl-Harbor riff.

So, it's done. I voted absentee ballot via email. Indiana lets you do that if you sign an affidavit waiving your right to a secret ballot.

I haven't missed voting in a general election since 1976.

Sorry, have a cold and the lazies, but who is Lena Dunham?

Lena Dunham is the creator and star of HBO's Girls. Now, I'm a guy, and I'm closer to 50 than I am to 20, but I watched this show on the advice of Adam Savage, and like him, I found myself enjoying it. So a Mythbuster and I both enjoy certain kinds of chick-flicks. Who would have guessed?
