Tech Note: The LGF Pages Reboot

Integrated
LGF • Views: 33,024

The new LGF Pages re-design is now in launch mode, and the first thing you’ll notice is that it looks a lot like the rest of the site. And that’s a good thing.

The old LGF Pages index had its own design, which actually started as a coding experiment way back in the day. Now it’s completely integrated into the design of the rest of LGF.

It’s more than a design integration, though; I also lavished a lot of attention on the plumbing, the MySQL queries that manipulate the LGF Pages database tables. Many of these queries worked very well as long as the whole list of Pages wasn’t too large — but with the number of Pages approaching 300,000, those queries were becoming unacceptably slow. In the lingo, they weren’t scaleable. That’s why I had to take the LGF Pages index offline when we installed our new servers.

Now these queries are very scaleable; I’ve optimized and refactored the queries and the PHP code behind them to make this new version respond much more quickly — again, like the rest of LGF.

If you’re signed in to an LGF account, some of the stats displayed on LGF Pages indexes are now “live,” updated at 5-second intervals, including the last comment and the page views. The Twitter counter is updated too, but at 90-second intervals.

When you scroll all the way to the bottom of the list of Pages, there’s a big button labeled “Show More Pages.” If you’re so inclined you can just keep clicking this button and showing more Pages until you reach the end, or your browser explodes, whichever comes first.

(Disclaimer: LGF not responsible for exploding browsers.)

Individual authors of Pages have their own indexes, just as in the old version, but again they now appear in a style consistent with the rest of LGF. You can get to any author’s LGF Pages by clicking their username in one of their Pages. The URL for your Pages looks like this (giving you a personal LGF web address):

littlegreenfootballs.com

And… one of the main problems with the old LGF Pages index was the search function. Basically, it sucked, and I say that as the author. Mea culpa. The biggest reason it sucked was because MySQL doesn’t have FULLTEXT indexing for tables of the InnoDB type, but you don’t really care about that. All you care about, and I don’t blame you, is that it’s fast. And the old LGF Pages search feature was the opposite of fast.

The solution: I’ve been noticing for a while that Google is crawling the heck out of LGF, and LGF Pages often show up in Google search results almost immediately after being posted, so I used Google’s “Custom Search Engine” feature to set up a special tool that searches LGF Pages. To use the custom Google search, type your search terms into the field in the left sidebar labeled “Google LGF Pages…”

Google’s search is ridiculously fast. Damned near instantaneous, in fact. Check it out and see how it compares to the old LGF Pages search feature.

EMAILS SHED LIGHT ON RYAN, WALKER RELATIONSHIP

[...]

The emails also show how Ryan and Walker sought to steer clear of sensitive political traps, and how Ryan was sensitive as early as September 2011 about offering any praise to government projects funded with money under Obama's economic stimulus law. In August, the AP and other news organizations noted that Ryan - a vocal opponent of the stimulus law - sought to steer money under the program to companies in his home state, which Ryan first awkwardly denied then acknowledged to be true.

In the emails, Walker's director of federal relations, Wendy Riemann, sent a message to Ryan's aide, Kevin Seifert, to describe a new grant from the U.S. Veterans Affairs Department awarded for a local water project. Riemann asked whether Ryan wanted to be quoted in a press release praising the money being spent in Wisconsin.

"Not to create more work for you, but do you have any idea where the money for this grant came from? Was it stimulus/the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act?" Seifert replied. "Our concern is that, if it's stimulus funds, we won't want to highlight (and would think you guys wouldn't, either) .... We generally don't do press on things we actively oppose."

Riemann responded that she would check the source of the money, which turned out not to be stimulus funding. "Feel free to proceed without us on this one," Seifert wrote.

[...]

Note how Ryan was quite fine with taking federal money, as long as it couldn't be credited to Obama's efforts.

Hypocrites.

Looters strip Bulgaria of ancient treasures; Powerless to prevent the rape of its sites

Police reports indicate that every day up to 50,000 people are engaged in treasure hunting raids across Bulgaria, a country of 7.3 million. According to Angel Papalezov, a senior police officer, hundreds of thousands of artifacts are smuggled out of the country every year, with dealers hauling in up to $40 million.

That's great! Any possibility you could replace the regular LGF search tool with this? Because the bug I pointed out earlier - trying to find comments a member made on Pages via a keyword search - still exists :(

Yes, you're referring to the Search tool in the LGF sidebar - I was thinking of the one that comes up when you click "Recent Comments" for a specific user. That one doesn't offer any Google functionality, as far as I can tell...

Still blows my mind that anyone actually supports Romney. If you ask them their opinions on actual issues, President Obama is the guy they should support. It's like when the ACA was polling so bad but internally, everybody liked its provisions.

Walked by a street fair today and heard one very old guy (a vendor) speak to another vendor say "I don't plan to vote for Obama, I didn't vote for him last year either."

Just a slip of the tongue, probably, but I am convinced that the generation differences are now profoundly influencing the political parties and that if Obama wins again it will be because he owns the under-30 vote.

Well, maybe. That hadn't occurred to me. But if stitching were the goal, then this isn't just common-or-garden variety incompetence. It's breathtaking incompetence of a magnitude that's difficult to credit. I can more easily believe that the intent was to deceive.

That might not be the case if this were any campaign other than Romney's. But they pretty much forfeited any benefit of the doubt when they produced that ad implying that an Obama quote of McCain was actually Obama speaking in his own voice, were caught doing it, and replied "so what?"

Oh, no, I tend to agree that it's not a big deal. Fauxtoshopping a political rally doesn't really bother me quite as much as, say, Fauxtoshopping war photographs to make them seem more horrible than they are. And stitching errors are a plausible enough explanation to fit Hanlon's Razor, albeit there is an argument to be made that Romney's whole dishonest campaign may exclude him from receiving the benefit of the doubt.

I can't imagine being undecided at this point, so I can't really tell. But I do know that Romney's off-the-scale dishonesty is one of the things I dislike most about him. I could see how an undecided voter might start to catch on to this tendency and be turned off by it. By itself this picture might be a very minor issue. Did you actually listen to read Meatloaf's endorsement? The guy came off like a complete raving lunatic.

‘This is the most important election in the history of the United States, because there has storm clouds come over the United States. There is thunderstorms over Europe,’ Meat Loaf said, misspeaking at several points. ‘There are hailstorms, and I mean major hailstorms, in the Middle East. There are storms brewing through China, through Asia, through everywhere, and there’s only one man that’ — he broke off abruptly. ‘The other night when President Barack Obama, God bless him, said to Mitt Romney, ‘The Cold War is over.’ I have never heard such a thing in my life.’

Lord what a dumbshit.

You know, I'm having trouble imagining that the point of that ad was to "shock traditionalists". I think that the point was to appeal to young (potential) voters in an amusing and engaging way. And I also think she probably succeeded in that goal. I can tell you for a fact that she succeeded in amusing this voter in his mid-50's.

If a person thinks of themselves as utterly incapable of empathizing with women, like D_F does, then of course a talented, successful, empowered young woman talking about her liberal political views would strike that person as trolling.

re: #50 blueraven

Also Romney is a liar once again, trying to scare Ohioans telling them Chrysler is moving Jeep to China. What a despicable human being.

The stuff about Jeep seem to come from the Washington Examiner taking a Bloomberg piece quoting Fiat's Asian COO incorrectly:

Fiat Says Jeep Output May Return to China as Demand Rises

Fiat SpA (F), majority owner of Chrysler Group LLC, plans to return Jeep output to China and may eventually make all of its models in that country, according to the head of both automakers’ operations in the region.

Fiat is in “very detailed conversations” with its Chinese partner, Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. (2238), about making Jeeps in the world’s largest auto market, said Mike Manley, chief operating officer of Fiat and Chrysler in Asia. Chrysler hasn’t built Jeeps there since before Fiat took control in 2009.

“The volume opportunity for us is very significant,” Manley, who is also president of the Jeep brand, said in an interview at Chrysler’s Auburn Hills, Michigan, headquarters. “We’re reviewing the opportunities within existing capacity” as well as “should we be localizing the entire Jeep portfolio or some of the Jeep portfolio.”

Chrysler, which entered an alliance with Turin, Italy-based Fiat as part of its U.S. government-backed bankruptcy, is relying on growth in China to counter weakness in Europe’s auto market. The automaker is targeting 500,000 annual sales outside North America by 2014, more than triple its overseas deliveries in 2009.

Chrysler currently builds all Jeep SUV models at plants in Michigan, Illinois and Ohio. Manley referred to adding Jeep production sites rather than shifting output from North America to China.

That first bolded bit looks pretty damning and its not until 4 paragraphs later that its meaning is clarified. I can't speculate though, on how the Examiner made that mistake.

‘The other night when President Barack Obama, God bless him, said to Mitt Romney, ‘The Cold War is over.’ I have never heard such a thing in my life."

There are hailstorms in the Middle East
There are storms brewing through China, Asia, everywhere

116 goddamnedfrank  Fri, Oct 26, 2012 9:08:43pm

Here's a question for any of our Romney supporters. Do you have any money riding on the election? The consensus of the betting websites currently runs about 2 to 1 against Romney winning, so if any of you are really sure your guy is going to win this represents an opportunity for you to triple your money in a very short timeframe. Anybody who's honestly really sure that Romney is going to win should bet as much as they possibly can right now.

I mean, what is it you know that professional oddsmakers with millions of dollars on the line don't?

Good for you, but do you think the oddsmakers are missing something vital in rating Romney's odds of winning at 2 to 1 against? If so, what?

Also, is it really gambling if you know you're going to win? Point being that a lot of people are going around acting like they know something that they clearly do not know. And if they truly are certain about the outcome then why aren't they exercising their capitalistic freedom to profit from such a sure thing?

123 nemus  Fri, Oct 26, 2012 9:36:59pm

Here's the thing about Romney's chances. If they REALLY thought there was a viable chance to, for instance, win Ohio - they wouldn't have Paul Ryan in 'the great swing state' of Alabama at a fundraiser.

I think what I am most looking forward to is the inside info dumps once the campaign is over, because I would LOVE to hear the details behind some of the .. less than politically savvy decisions the R/R camp has made.

I do expect the next 11 days to be all sorts of ugly, though - but then I really, really am curious as to exactly WHAT the GOP does come November 7th, assuming Barack is declared the winner and we don't have a couple weeks of uncertainty.

What is your common mans/womans price point?

Roaming around San Diego it seems to me that there is still quite a bit of down-market pressure on adornment.

While traditional religious (crucifixes - remember, SD being originally a Catholic place) and ceremonial (wedding) jewelry is still seen, I notice a dearth of other fine jewelry. Indeed, when I see someone wearing a gold ring (other than a wedding band) it catches my eye because its something that doesn't seem as common as it used to be.

The craft fairs I've scrounged in the recent past have not seen much as far as craftsmen showing expensive wares, and "jewelry" tends to be body piercing stuff.

I do not foresee gold and platinum prices coming down significantly unless (1) we enter another global recession, in which case reduced industrial demand will depress platinum, or (2) the US economy recovers at a stronger pace compared to the rest of the world and the dollar strengthens, weakening gold.

Copper and brass, as you know, is difficult to wear against skin continually (due to discoloration). I've been wondering if the other PGMs, such as Ruthenium, might see some fashion attention, but apparently not. Likewise for the more exotic group 4 or 5 metals, which are much more difficult to work with but got some attention from the art crowd. But none of those metals have stuck as a trend.

See, most of us Obama voters feel like we can affect the outcome.

Exactly. Iowa is supposedly a possible play, and it is just across the river from WI so you think it'd be a natural for Ryan to stump in IA, but is he?

And with NV, with such a large Mormon population one would think that the Romneys could really push hard there, but has he?

Hey everyone...happy to have my wife home every night until at least Wednesday next week (unless the Giants don't win two in Detroit)...she was asked if she wanted to go to Detroit with the team, but that would have meant being on the team plane at 8:30 this morning when she didn't get home until 11:00 last night. The upside is she would get to relax and see the games...the down side would be that she would be in Detroit for four days and I would be home without her. Glad she declined.

re: #127 freetoken

Interesting view. The recession has put a damper on the "bling". Dollars are not really there apart from the high end. In terms of metals that wont discolor, all ya have is precious metals and white to gray. Tungsten, titanium, stainless. All white or gray. BTW we have silver that is very tarnish resistant. And none of the non precious metals have any lasting material value at all.

At risk of TL;DR
Gold of course is the only yellow element and it does not tarnish. Brass and bronze alloys tarnish. Copper is the only red element. All these are easily worked. Or combined for color like rose gold. In extremis we can make purple gold, but it's brittle like glass. We can coat afordable brass or bronze to resist tarnish. Works okay.

In the white look my favorite metal is 95% palladium. Disclaimer-I was on the team that re formulated it for jewelry use some years ago. But I make a living on any precious jewelry metal. It's a mild bias.

Factors-Platinum group, high purity, won't tarnish, no allergies like white gold can be an issue with. About $600 per ounce, pretty accessible. Small rings/items under $200 retail.

What can and might happen in pricing-Take the speculator bubble out of gold in large part and it's hundreds per ounce more affordable. Given some stability in market pricing and some income growth like jobs and the middle class meets gold all over again. Probably a little lighter in design than years ago. Maybe 14kt in a high tech alloy that is light and strong.

Gold was coming back strong at $1500 mere months ago. $1500-$1300 gold and say 7% unemployment for a year or so and we are back.

The big thing in precious, that you can not offshore is custom made to order. These days the customer can design or co design with the jeweler. CAD, cast, set, polish, deliver one of a kind truly unique jewelry in a couple days. That's the growth sector.

You know what I'd really like to see? The next seven days' polls showing a growing lead for President Obama. Two points nationally on Sunday, three on Monday, four on Tuesday, five on Wednesday, six on Thursday, seven on Friday, eight on Saturday - and corresponding state polls - +7 in FL, NV, and CO, +8 in OH, +6 in VA...just turn this whole fucking race into a goddamn landslide where the GOP is so dejected that they don't even show up in red states. I want the margin to be so big that, on election day, when Wolf takes the stage on CNN and starts to talk about how they'll bring us the breaking news on who will win the presidency, his producers do a voice-over to say, "Shut the fuck up, Wolf...you're only here to recite the numbers as they come in...and if you can't handle that, we'll get John King to take care of it."

Anyway, one thing about jewelry is that it is a very clear statement about adorning oneself.

I bring it up in part because I think we as a society are still pretty skittish about our economy, and over the recent months while I'm out milling about I'm trying to be more aware of how people are acting around me. Lots of people appear to be pressured, under duress.

This is the thing about which if Romney was an approachable, warm, "in-touch" type of guy he could have successfully honed in on. From his statements I get the impression that analysts are telling him to focus on the frustration of the American people, but frankly he just can't connect with the 99% of us who aren't in the top 1%.

Good ol' Marco may not have known himself.

See, that's the thing about our society, expertise is hard to come by and even harder to judge by those without training in the field in question.

And the last person I ever trust is a salesman. It's not that every salesperson is actually trying to take their customer for a ride. But, and I learned this over the years from having several friends in the auto sales business - salesmen have to believe in their product to be really good at the job. And that often means they themselves can be duped, because needing to believe something is such a human trait but one which has no guarantee of truth.

When Arlen Spector won his last Senate campaign, I think in 2004, he tried to present himself as a dam against Republican craziness. He said that since he would be Chairman of the Judiciary committee, he would try to keep the RWNJ's off the federal bench. Right after the election, the GOP forced him to promise he would give all the nominees a fair chance if he wanted to keep that chairmanship. As much as Romney may want to pretend he's a moderate, he knows and the party knows exactly what is expected of him.

Here is a little advanced scouting for the Oklahoma-Notre Dame game here Saturday night. It is a huge game. They have hated them for years losing 8 of 9. Every night they have been practicing at Owens field.. The lights shine through my bedroom window so a few times a year I have to put a big blanket up to block the light. It's not the light..It's the sounds that carry a 1/2 mile away.
It's like a Marine bootcamp getting ready to kill people. It's savage out there.
Oklahoma doesn't want to win, They want to destroy the Irish.
There will be pain, injuries and broken bones and poor Notre Dame is pulling into Norman expecting a normal football game.
It is going to be forever a classic game for college football

Hey guys, don't worry about the Hurricane. Cindy Jacobs is on it.

Prayer Points:

1. Rebuke this storm in Jesus' name. The authority of the believer is powerful enough to shift weather patterns! (Matthew 17:20)

2. Declare that the Prince of Peace reigns over this hurricane, and that His peace will cause the storm to diminish. (Isaiah 9:6)

3. Pray that this storm will not disrupt our Reformation Day prayer initiatives in the eastern states. (Isaiah 54:17)

4. Pray that the Lord would protect every person on the eastern coast, and that there would be no fatalities or serious injuries. (Psalm 91; It would also be good to declare this passage of scripture over the eastern states.)

5. Worship God for his provision, protection, and peace in the midst of storms. (Psalm 59:16)

Thank you for praying with us!

Standing with you,
Mike and Cindy Jacobs

For all you Louis Prima fans out there - with the swing revival in the 90's Louis picked up a new generation of fans, but most of the material that got replayed was from his post WWII days (with Keely Smith, etc. .)

Here's something pre WWII, from 1936:

193 Kragar  Sat, Oct 27, 2012 12:15:06am

In 1969 a young Australian, John Rendall and his friend Ace Bourke, bought a small lion cub from Harrods pet department, which was then legal. 'Christian' was kept in the basement of a furniture shop on the Kings Road in Chelsea, the heart of the swinging sixties. Loved by all, the affectionate cub ate in a local restaurant, played in a nearby graveyard, but was growing fast...

A chance encounter with Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna led to a new life for Christian. He came to live in a huge enclosure and to sleep in a caravan at their Surrey home. Then in 1971 he was flown to Kenya, his ancestral home, and returned to the wild by lion-man George Adamson. Nine months later in 1972, John and Ace returned to Kora in Kenya. This clip is of their reunion at that time.

It is not trolling in the classic sense, she does mention issues of importance. She talked about voting, knowing full well that they way she did it would arouse all the puerile, suppressed sexual longings that these poor conservative fellows have beein trying to hide or contain since puberty and get them all hot under the collar...It is "trolling" in the sense that it is designed to provoke an overreaction, which it did.

The message contained a video depicting a 4-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl engaged in sexual acts, officials said.

Well, I'm breathing a sigh of relief, seems the "cone of uncertainty" has moved well north of here, so Sandy shouldn't be making an appearance beyond a lot of wind and rain. Not that those are every something to take lightly, but still.

My friend is downplaying this whole thing. I showed him the satellite loop then walked outside and pointed to the clouds from the outer bands of this thing. But then again, in 2004, he brought all the contents from his freezer to my house because he lost power. I'll guess that 50% of people in Florida aren't prepared for a hurricane. Up here I'll bet it's more like 75%.

I've been remarking to friends here that you can tell the difference between the new folks and the old-timers. The new folks freak out at the first mention of hurricanes, clear out the stores, and horde gasoline like it's molten gold.

The old-timers don't freak out because they've usually got a reserve in their pantry "just in case" and don't freak out until the forecasters know with certainty that the hurricane's coming this way.

In Florida, if a hurricane is 2-3 days away you'd think the world was coming to an end. Home Depot is swamped. Publix is swamped. I would start getting supplies in April/May. Just an extra gallon of water a week and an extra can of ravioli and so on. When season ended I would give the food to a food bank (usually the USPS food drive) and drink the water.

Humans react to impending crises, not to abstract statistical threats.

That is why it is going to take us a weapons grade constitutional crisis-inducing clusterf*ck of an election debacle before we seriously approach issues of voter registration, vote counting and election policies in general.

'round here, the folks who really have to worry are in one of three groups: Live on the beach, live on the Peninsula, or live in a low-lying area. The first and third have to deal with storm surge, the second has to deal with the initial brunt of landfall, and all three have to deal with utilities being down for extended periods. If you live in the burbs, like I do, then the worst you have to worry about is falling tree branches, the brief (1-2 day max) power outages, and the general media hysteria.

In 2004 I had friends that lost power for up to 5 days. Which is manageable. But when the hurricanes left, it was still 90 degrees. In 2004 I lost power for 4 hours total. But I lived on the grid that was used by the utility companies where they would muster to plan their day.

232 Targetpractice  Sat, Oct 27, 2012 5:11:22am

Oh, and we also have to deal with the embarrassment of the jackasses who flock to the beach in the hopes that they either see the huge friggin' waves or get their brief 15 seconds of fame running by the Weather Channel cameras. And I gotta say, I feel sorry for the reporters who apparently draw the short straw and get stuck reporting "on location" for the Weather Channel.

Of the last two major hurricanes to roll through, Isabel knocked out power here for all of two days, though part of that was an idiot neighbor who didn't call Dominion Power because his house still had power and so didn't think reporting the power line down in his yard a "priority." And Irene caused short blips, but never killed power. We only lost power for a couple hours the next day because the power crews working in the next neighborhood over had to shut down this part of the grid to replace a blown transformer.

That's alright, they were calling for 3-5' of storm surge down in NC, including Elizabeth City, where my old works at the Coast Guard station there. Considering they're sitting right on the river front, that much surge might actually flood the building he works at.

Buy water in gallon jugs, pour out three cups of water from each jug (make coffee, etc).
Freeze the partially full gallon jugs in your freezer, which will slow thawing in times of no electricity. When the water melts due to thawing, drink the cool water. Bags of ice are useless after thawing as the water leaks out & un-drinkable.
Last thing to do before a hurricane, is to mow your lawn. It makes clean up

We are far enough inland that we are a shelter destination for Gulf Coast evacuations. Opal was a rare one, was still about 110 mph when it went right over. One of our 60' pines came down and took out neighborhood power for about 10 days. We just 'camped-in'.

Where I live now (south central China) has really boring weather. No hurricanes, tornadoes, severe t-storm watches, typhoons, floods, mudslides, blizzards. Just hot and muggy summers, and cold and wet winters. Nothing unusual (so far). All the really bad weather seems to bypass us.

Also, I learned that this part of China is earthquake-free, but not the next province over (Sichuan).

I'm not complaining. I've lived through several hurricanes, tornado seasons, blizzards, winter storm warnings, etc. -- enough severe weather for one lifetime, I think.

But I got friends and family on the East Coast, so I hope Sandy doesn't clobber y'all too bad.

Okay, so this is a new one on me.

A friend of mine has emailed me and told me that her boyfriend beat her up, and that she's now in a women's shelter. She said she had two cracked ribs which were taped up at the hospital.

I dearly love my friend, however, she's bi-polar and I've known her to lie about very, very serious things before, to go off her meds, and to start fights when she's in a manic mode. Her boyfriend is someone I've met, showed no overt signs of being an asshole, and in fact had a long-ish conversation with me about how best to take care of her when she's having an episode. However, it still very well may have happened-- I've never known her to lie about the actions of others, just her own actions.

She hasn't asked for anything directly, but I'm very concerned for my friend. If her boyfriend did beat her up, then obviously that's a practical problem as well as an emotional one-- they live together, so someone will have to retrieve her stuff and I'd be fine being the guy to do it. If he didn't, then she's deep in a manic episode and needs help.

I'm really unsure of what to do. I can't just drop by on the shelter (they don't allow men at all, which I think is wise) but I could meet her nearby. Her sister lives in town as well, but I don't know if she's told her.

My instincts are to tell the sister, and arrange to meet my friend with her sister and then the sister and I can confer after to see what we feel we can do.

Does anyone have any advice? My adrenaline is pumping a bit after this email and I don't think I'm thinking that straight.

Indonesia arrests 11 over planned US embassy attack

Indonesian police have arrested 11 suspected terrorists who they say were planning attacks on the US embassy and an American consulate.

A police spokesman says the group was planning to attack a building near the Australian embassy.
...
Police say the suspected terrorists belonged to a new network known as Hasmi.

Explosive materials were also secured from a location in Solo, central Java, and in Bogor on the outskirts of Jakarta.

"The group's objectives were to attack the US embassy in Jakarta and consulate-general in the eastern Javanese city of Surabaya," national police spokesman Suhardi Alius told reporters.

Please don't paint all salesmen with the same brush. Car sales is vile game. My BIL a life-long successful salesmen, quit a job as a car salesman. He couldn't sell cars to people who couldn't afford them. He thought the whole set-up was evil.

It's getting very dangerous all over the place. That shithead Zawahri is calling for kidnappings. It's just a matter of time before some supporters take him up on it.

Al-Qaeda's Zawahri calls for kidnap of westerners

Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri has called on Muslims to kidnap Westerners, join Syria's rebellion and to ensure Egypt implements sharia, SITE Monitoring reported on Saturday, citing a two-part film posted on Islamist websites.

The Egypt-born cleric, who became al Qaeda leader last year after the death of Osama bin Laden, spoke in a message that lasted more than two hours.

"We are seeking, by the help of Allah, to capture others and to incite Muslims to capture the citizens of the countries that are fighting Muslims in order to release our captives," he said, praising the kidnapping of Warren Weinstein, a 71-year-old American aid worker in Pakistan last year.

I think the percentages are higher than that. I think Mitt can't connect with about 98.8% Percent of us who actually need a paycheck. He's not one of the 1%, he's part of the .02%.

You can't know enough to do direct involvement without the good chance of making things worse. To satisfy the need to act make a donation to the shelter, in her name if possible.

Al-Qaeda's Zawahri calls for kidnap of westerners

Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri has called on Muslims to kidnap Westerners, join Syria's rebellion and to ensure Egypt implements sharia, SITE Monitoring reported on Saturday, citing a two-part film posted on Islamist websites.
...
n his new message, he called on Muslims to ensure Egypt's revolution continued until sharia law was implemented and urged fellow Muslims to join the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
...
Zawahri, who led the Egyptian Islamic Jihad movement before joining al Qaeda, called on President Mohamed Mursi, the country's new Islamist leader, to explain his policies on Israel, Egyptian Christians and sharia law.

Islamist militants want Egypt to introduce sharia and to tear up a 1979 peace treaty with Israel and were dismayed when Mursi said he would appoint a Coptic Christian vice president.

"The battle in Egypt is very clear. It is a battle between the secular minority that is allied with the church and that is leaning on the support of the army, who are made up by (former President Hosni) Mubarak and the Americans ... and the Muslim ummah (nation) in Egypt that is seeking to implement sharia," he said.

Her sister would have more legal right to act on her behalf than a friend or boyfriend. Getting the family involved is a good first step, IMHO. If not the family then a legal advocate or other professional. The shelter she is in probably has good support systems in place as well.

I wasn't thinking so much about whether he'll end up the bad guy (which I think is avoidable, but I'd save the email). I've heard that there's a lot of burnout among shelter volunteers when they see clients returning to the situation from which they came. I think it's good for people to try to help others when they can. I also think it's good for people to be realistic about the chances that they can 'fix' a situation, or a person, or whatever.

Also, I'm kind of leery of what some family members see as their 'duty'. A couple of my sisters thought it was their 'duty' at one time to tell me I was making a mistake in a situation they knew nothing about. Their opinion was based on their prejudices.

It's OK to be leery of such matters, but the idea of family members duty to each other is important and is a major cornerstone of morality and society. If prejudice flaws it, then the solution is to eliminate the prejudice to repair the stone.

This is the idiocy that we have to put up with on a daily basis in Texas.

Former Republican official: ‘You can’t be a Christian if you don’t own a gun’

Speaking to the “Deliver Us From Evil” conference at the Upper Room Church in Keller, Texas earlier this week, Dr. Gary Cass explained that America had a “broken moral compass” because it regularly elected “politicians who could justify killing babies made in the image of God” and “justify redefining God’s institution of marriage.”

“We tolerate judges who allow for pornography and blasphemy, yet won’t allow us to have prayer or Bible reading in our schools,” he ranted. “Our formerly great Christian universities have become perverted factories of unfaithfulness.”

Cass blasted “progressive Christians” for abandoning “God’s word for Marxist liberation theology and in doing so have murdered their own souls.”

“By the way, I’ve got a whole sermon, you can’t be a Christian if you don’t own a gun,” he added. “That preaches in Texas, don’t it?”

More voter fraud found.

Big Mitt Romney Supporter Caught In Voter Fraud?

The singer Meat Loaf, who last night endorsed Mitt Romney at a raucous rally in Ohio, is not registered to vote in his home state of Texas, and this week sought a mail ballot from a Los Angeles home that he sold 17 months ago, records show.

The performer, a Texas native, earlier this year moved to Austin, where he purchased a $1.475 million home in March (the deed to the 1.1 acre property is in the name of the Abercrombie Lane Trust). In mid-June, Aday kicked off his 2012 concert tour in the state capitol, where the Austin American-Statesman referred to him as a “new Austinite.”

But Aday never got around to registering to vote in Texas, according to Travis County voter registration records and representatives with the county’s voter registrar. To be eligible to cast a ballot on November 6, Texas residents had to register to vote by October 9.

However, his rambling, addled statement may mean he's so out of it and unaware that he really can't put 2 and 2 together-- which would raise the question of why Romney thinks this nutball's support reflects well on him.

He might have relied on some underling to do the work for him. I don't know enough to speculate, but I don't think he was trying to do anything more than cast his ballot. As he's a US citizen and not a felon, that isn't inherently problematic. He does need to follow the rules, however.

Let me balance my last post with this, uh, story.

Is voter fraud being committed in Ohio?

Two volunteer poll workers at an Ohio voting station told Human Events that they observed van loads of Ohio residents born in Somalia — the state is home to the second-largest Somali population in the United States — being driven to the voting station and guided by Democratic interpreters on the voting process. No Republican interpreters were present, according to these volunteers.

A source, who wishes to remain anonymous, is a volunteer outside the Morse Road polling center. She has witnessed Somalis who cannot speak English come to the polling center. They are brought in groups, by van or bus. The Democrats hand them a slate card and say, “vote Brown all the way down.” Given that Sherrod Brown is the incumbent Democrat Senator in Ohio, one can assume that this is the reference.

Non-English speaking voters may use an interpreter. The interpreters are permitted by law to interpret for the individual voting; however, they are forbidden from influencing their vote in any way. Another source who also wishes to remain anonymous has seen Democrat interpreters show the non-English speaking Somalis how to vote the Democrat slate that they were handed outside. According to this second source, there are not any Republican Somali interpreters available.

The logical follow-up question is whether a non-English speaking person is an American citizen. ...

re: #329 Big Joe

So this 'source' speaks Somali?

And the story is weird:

Essentially, a person is asked to check a box stating that they are a citizen, and the poll worker is to trust that they are the person who is listed on the item being shown or the information being written. In other words, someone can be an illegal resident of the state of Ohio and the United States, get an apartment, turn on the heat, bring in the Columbia Gas bill, register to vote by the deadline, and vote by showing that same bill. There is then no verification that this individual is a citizen of the United States.

How does this person actually register to vote? They kind of skip over that bit.

"unreal" how? I'd bet that Sen. Rubio would be far less willing to call them that compared to Sarah Palin. But unlike the former governor of Alaska, Marco Rubio is actually a smart person.

So the "Somalis" don't speak English, there's no Republicans around that speak Somali, and yet the anonymous source fully comprehends that the "Somalis" are being told to vote a certain way (because they're being instructed in that single instance in English for some reason)?

That shit ain't internally consistent.

So this 'source' speaks Somali?

And the story is weird:

How does this person actually register to vote? They kind of skip over that bit.

Doesn't look like a difficult process in Ohio

There's an online form that asks name, address and last 4 of an SS #

Right, but then you can check that against the name, and see that they're not a citizen-- so they don't get on the rolls.

It would require the coincidence of two people, one a citizen and one not a citizen, both with the same last 4 digits of the SSN, and the citizen not having registered and the non-citizen registering.

Just got back from early-voting in Fort Worth, TX. There wasn't a line, but the place was a lot busier than I expected; about the same as election day 2010. The woman-friend in Arlington reported a long line yesterday.

And because some people (not necessarily on LGF) seem to be fascinated by such things: I didn't see any UN monitors with jackboots and sharp Hugo Boss uniforms, eyeing people suspiciously and making checkmarks on clipboards. I also didn't see any young black men wearing berets and sunglasses, polishing brass knuckles and glaring at Whitey. I did see a lot of old folks. They didn't seem too threatening. I was careful to keep my eye on one woman with a walker, though. I probably could have taken her had the shit hit the fan, but I didn't turn my back to her, just the same.

Pumpkin Thieves Beware, The Trap Is Set

Last year, a Portland couple grew a small pumpkin patch on the sliver of land between their sidewalk and the road.

It was the talk of the neighborhood and they promised local kids they could each have a pumpkin at Halloween.
But a few days beforehand, every single pumpkin was stolen.

Kristian Foden-Vencil reports on the unique solutions some are finding to address theft in the garden patch.

Voter fraud in the in-person format is astonishingly rare. At the larger levels, it tends to get detected. We have a very good system, and we should be proud and happy about that.

If Democrats were engaging in voter fraud, it'd make me much less likely to support them.
