Saturday Night Groove: Donald Fagen, “Slinky Thing”

More light
Music • Views: 40,933

From the album of the year, Sunken Condos.

It was a October morning
Near the carousel
I met a light young beauty
And we hooked up for a spell
We walked up by the green lawn
And my heart began to sing
Mad man on a victory lap

Hold onto that slinky thing
Hold onto that slinky thing

Went to a party
Everybody stood around
Thinkin’ hey what she doing
With a burned out hippie clown
Young dudes were grinnin’
I can’t say it didn’t stink
Some punk says pops you better

Hold onto that slinky thing
Hold onto that slinky thing

More light, more light, more light, more light, more light, more light
More light, more light, more light, more light, more light, more light

Today we were strolling
By the reptile cage
I’m thinkin’ that she needs somebody
Who’s closer to her own age
Try not to worry
What tomorrow may bring
I’m just gonna do my best to

Hold onto that slinky thing
Hold onto that slinky thing

More light, more light, more light, more light, more light, more light
More light, more light, more light, more light, more light, more light

Today we were strolling
By the reptile cage
I’m thinkin’ that she needs somebody
Who’s closer to her own age
Try not to worry
What tomorrow may bring
I’m just gonna do my best to

Hold onto that slinky thing
Hold onto that slinky thing

There’s a sun in my sky
That’s my power supply
She stayed with me
I know heaven is right here on earth

Well, I can see why a song that references "the reptile cage" would be liked by the Lizard King. ;)

I'm so glad that I stayed at home during the OU game tonight. In minutes there will be a 100,000 pissed the fuck off people at the bars and in the neighborhoods. This will not be pretty. The police sirens were going off at 6:30am this morning. I'll watch from my porch.. YEEHAA!

Well, 11pm EST update is out and the track's moved farther north. I feel horrible for the folks up in New England, but on the other hand, it's hard not to breath a sigh of relief.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Sandy's rearing its ugly mug off the coast of the Carolinas and it's still a Cat 1 storm, but it's absolutely huge. It will be churning waters and pushing a huge surge across the East Coast - extended rains, coastal flooding, and inland flooding with sustained winds in excess of tropical storm force winds.

PSEG is already prepositioning equipment in expectation of power losses. They've been sending out tweets indicating that they expect that about half of its customers are likely to lose power at some point.

In NYC, they haven't announced school closures/MTA closures, but they'll probably make that call tomorrow night. Bloomberg did say that city schools and buses/subways to be working on Monday, but the final decision will be made tomorrow night. I'm thinking that they're going to be suspending service tomorrow evening because the storm is looking to hit the area squarely on the chin, and that NJ Transit is likely to shut down in large parts of the state.

It is described as an oblique thrust fault rupture, where most of the energy is up and horizontal. This is similar to the Haiti quake, but fortunately no one lives there. Unlikely to produce a tsunami.

My party, unfortunately, is the bastion of those people -- not all of them, but most of them -- who are still basing their positions on race. Let me just be candid: My party is full of racists, and the real reason a considerable portion of my party wants President Obama out of the White House has nothing to do with the content of his character, nothing to do with his competence as commander-in-chief and president, and everything to do with the color of his skin, and that's despicable.

-Col. Lawrence Wilkerson

95 Tiny Alien Kitties are Watching You  Sun, Oct 28, 2012 1:31:34am

I'm sorry but your Misogynist conspiracy theory doesn't make a damn lick of sense...

The direct association between Marxism and feminism seems to have developed in the 1960s, possibly under the influence of the CIA, which is known to have funded feminist Marxist organizations. This raises the question of what exactly the point was in associating feminism with Marxism. Although I never thought of this before, it may be that the CIA wanted to present Marxism as something disadvantageous to the average American/Western working man, and feminism, which has always been hostile to working men, was quite capable of doing just that. - W.F. Price

So in the 1960s (the 60s!) the CIA funded Feminist Marxist groups because they knew any association with Feminists would make Marxism look bad to the menfolk?
Bwahahahahahaha...

96 Tiny Alien Kitties are Watching You  Sun, Oct 28, 2012 1:50:17am

re: #94 goddamnedfrank

Just for the sake of clarity, he is properly cited as...

Col. Lawrence Wilkerson Army, (Ret.)

You know the wingnuts are only going to say, so what, he was Colin Powell's chief of staff, he is just sticking up for his ex-boss. Which I guess might be partially true, I would not be shocked if he was pissed at Sununu for saying Powell made his endorsement because of a "shared race."

Still none of that means that what he is saying isn't his true belief, maybe he just finally got angry enough to speak out against his party. Just like so many of us here ended up doing at some earlier point of the GOPs' change from Jekyll to Hyde.

97 goddamnedfrank  Sun, Oct 28, 2012 1:57:09am

If you think 538 is overly optimistic placing Obama's chances at 73.6%, and don't believe the bookies know their own business in offering 2 to 1 odds against a Romney win, then the Princeton Election Consortium model probably won't convince you either:

Probability of Obama re-election: Random Drift Model 87%, Bayesian Prediction 96%

...

Random drift. Using past races, I have estimated how much the Meta-Margin is likely to fluctuates over time. In this “random drift” model, I assume that opinion is equally likely to move in either direction. (Nerds: at N days before the election, the drift has a standard deviation of 0.4% * sqrt(N).) If the Meta-Margin stays above zero, then Obama wins. Today, the probability of an Obama win is 89%.

Bayesian prediction. Here I make an additional assumption, that the final outcome is likely to be drawn from the values that the Meta-Margin has explored this year. This is equivalent to the idea that the Meta-Margin is more likely to move towards its average (Obama +3.1+/-1.3%) than away from it. This has been the case in past elections. In statistics this is called a “Bayesian prior,” as in prior assumption. Today, including that prior gives a win probability of 97%.

99 Tiny Alien Kitties are Watching You  Sun, Oct 28, 2012 2:18:55am

Well there goes some of the Romney vote...

Almost 1.4 Million Pledge For Jesus as Write-In Candidate in 2012, as Disgruntled Evangelicals Vent Their Anti-Mormon, Anti-Obama Ire.

As of October 18, 2012, when I reported in my story Graham's Romney Endorsement Accidentally Spreads "Mormonism is a cult" Meme to Millions - about superstar evangelist Billy Graham's disastrous effort to woo Protestant evangelical voters to vote for Mormon Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in the 2012 election, I was unaware that the meme might, by then, already have spread to over a million disgruntled evangelicals who had reportedly pledged to vent their anti-Mormon (and anti-Obama) ire at the ballot box this November 6th.

Candidate "A" is clearly a tool of Satan. But candidate "B" is a tool of Satan too and, if elected president, he'll suspend the Constitution and implement a theocracy to be run by his satanically-inspired cult.

"Stop!", cries out evangelist Bill Keller, founder of the Internet ministry liveprayer.com; "CHRISTIANS MUST TAKE A STAND AND SAY "NO" TO SATAN THIS NOVEMBER!!!", he declares, "Vote for Jesus!"

Keller means it. His website [Link: www.votingforjesus.com...] claims to have received well over one million pledges from voters who say that they will, on November 6, 2012, cast their votes for the write-in candidacy of Jesus Christ for president of the United States.

Some things really are timeless.

As soon as the music started out came this wide grin.

And remembering watching the video with my daughter for the first time. I don't think she blinked for the entire movie or slept for a couple of nights.

She wanted to dress like Snow White, look like Snow White and sound like Snow White.

She was determined to grow up and be a princess. I told her she already was a princess.

Seems like it was just yesterday.

Thanks for reminding me of some of the best days of my life.

I am currently in Maryland after 40 years in Florida. A CAT 1 isn't really a big deal except for flooding and losing power, etc. Just tell friends/family to make sure they have rations for 3-5 days. 131 lawhawk  Sun, Oct 28, 2012 6:36:52am

re: #118 ProGunLiberal

That's what worries me. Along with what they're saying may be a prolonged exposure to tropical force winds or greater for 24+ hours.

Think about that. A hurricane may rearrange a parcel of property for 6-8 hours and move on and the winds diminish. This thing is going to stick around for 24 hours or more.

The storm surge is going to beat the heck out of the shore communities, and Lower Manhattan may well find itself flooded out with the storm surges predicted for Raritan Bay and the Long Island Sound where it flushes into Hell Gate at the East River. 9-12 feet above normal at those points. New York Bay itself would get 7-9 feet, which is likely to top the levels seen in Hurricane Irene.

And what boggles the mind is that Bloomberg keep saying that the best thing for people to do is to stay inside during the storm event, but at that same presser yesterday, he said that schools would remain open and the MTA would make the decision to close sometime today. With the forecasts becoming more certain on the kind of path and intensity, I'm fully expecting to see the schools shuttered on Mon/Tues and possibly Wed, and that mass transit will be shut down for Mon/Tues, and the subways might see some lines disabled for longer due to water damage.

Evacuations have been called for Fire Island, and some of the barrier islands in NJ. Emergency shelters in NYC are being prepared, and I would urge people in low-lying areas around here to consider moving to higher ground if possible or at least preparing their homes as best as they could for potential flooding.

We've battened down the hatches best we could; moved stuff that could be moved; secured stuff outside; and hope that the trees don't decide to take another bite out of the house as they did last year.

I do expect that power is going to go out at some point. There's just too many trees and too much time involved. But I was glad to see that PSEG was preparing for that - they've stockpiled equipment and trucks at staging areas not far from the house to deal with the inevitable outages. They've already called in for mutual support from other companies across the country. Con Ed in NY has already gotten mutual support set up, but it appears to a lesser extent than PSEG.

134 lawhawk  Sun, Oct 28, 2012 6:42:23am

re: #132 ProGunLiberal

Fact is that everyone expects that the schools are likely to be closed; that the experts are expecting record to near record storm surges that could seriously damage major infrastructure (the subway systems) and that people aren't going to send their kids to school in those conditions as if the teachers themselves could get in safely (or return home safely).

The conditions in the morning might not be severe, but it's going to get worse throughout the day tomorrow, and the idea of going with a half-day of school tomorrow doesn't make any sense from a security standpoint either. Best to make the announcements early and give everyone a chance to get where they have to go before the storm hits.

He said mass transit and cyclists are more important than drivers. He also said he didn't think New York City needed to be evacuated...he's actually right on that second part. Sandy will hit south of there. It'll be wet, there will be floods, but it'll just be a big douching for the city in the end.

Storm surge could fuck up some multi-million dollar homes in Long Island Sound, though...but they're insured.

Toledo Blade endorses Obama...nicely.

A second term for President BARACK OBAMA would be a better outcome for Ohio, Michigan, and the rest of the country — and would offer more hopeful prospects for the next four years — than would his replacement by his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney. The Blade recommends the President’s re-election.

During his administration, President Obama has provided pragmatic, steady, centrist leadership that has served the nation well. He has dealt effectively with economic recession at home and turmoil abroad, much of which he inherited from his predecessor. The stimulus he promoted — along with the auto and bank bailouts — helped prevent the recession from becoming a depression.

Mr. Romney blames what he calls the still-dismal state of the national economy on the President’s inept stewardship. The challenger says his experience as a business executive would enable him to slash the federal deficit, create 12 million jobs, restore fiscal stability, and accelerate economic recovery.

In fact, Ohio’s current unemployment rate is 7 percent — nearly one-fifth lower than it was when the President was inaugurated in January, 2009. Nationally, the jobless rate has dropped substantially over the past year and also is lower than when Mr. Obama took office.

There are more of those pesky facts in the endorsement here

Some nice games on today.

182 darthstar  Sun, Oct 28, 2012 7:48:21am

Not that the rest of their fuckin' state will listen, but still nice.

President Barack Obama entered the Oval Office under dire conditions — a hemorrhaging economy and a dispirited GOP intent on limiting him to one term, at any cost.

Despite those odds, he has kept his cool and his head.

His policies helped the middle class and kept a deep recession from becoming worse. He repaired America’s reputation in the world. And he got important legislation passed.

For that, the nation is better — not fully healed, but pushing forward. He has earned another four years.

Among his top accomplishments, Obama:

• Ended the war in Iraq.

• Is on track to responsibly bring troops home from the war in Afghanistan, following the killing of America’s top enemy, Osama bin Laden.

• Pushed through tax cuts for the middle class.

• Signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to better protect women from discrimination.

• Ended “don’t ask, don’t tell,” allowing gays and lesbians to serve without prejudice in the military.

• Created the Consumer Financial Protection bureau, which has successfully led to new safeguards.

• Sparked efforts to improve education and expand and lighten the cost of student college loans.

• Boosted the fuel economy standards for cars.

• Signed the Affordable Care Act, his signature achievement so far that will give Americans access to insurance, regardless of pre-existing conditions and without limits.

251 Kronocide  Sun, Oct 28, 2012 9:02:26am

It is widely perceived that the national television news industry skews left and, in some cases, actively supports liberal political candidates.

While that is debatable on a case-by-case basis, the evidence is overwhelming that the folks who deliver the news to the nation are sympathetic to liberal causes, and that obviously favors President Obama during this election cycle.

Let's run it down:

• NBC News anchor Brian Williams interned for the Carter administration early in his career. He has no registered political affiliation and I can find no political donations he has made. However, he has denigrated conservatives on late-night TV.

• ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer once worked for Richard Nixon. She has no political affiliation and no donations on the record. She is perceived to be a social liberal but downplays any partisanship on television.

• CBS News anchor Scott Pelley is not affiliated with any party and has given no donations. He plays it straight on TV.

• Anderson Cooper hosts a prime-time program on CNN. In 2004, he was a registered Democrat. No political donations have been made in his name. He has openly criticized the tea party on a number of occasions and is perceived to be liberal.

• Piers Morgan is also a CNN prime-time host. A British subject, he is openly liberal on the air and, earlier this month, wrote an op-ed article for London's Daily Mail newspaper where he called Mitt Romney all kinds of names.

• Charlie Rose co-hosts the CBS Morning News and was a registered Democrat early in his career. He is widely considered sympathetic to the left but has asked tough questions to liberal politicians on occasion.

• George Stephanopoulos co-hosts ABC's Good Morning America and is a registered Democrat who worked as an adviser to President Clinton. Stephanopoulos downplays his political affiliation on the air.

• Matt Lauer is the co-host of the Today Show on NBC. He is not registered with a political party and there are no political donations in his name. Widely considered to be socially liberal, Lauer is generally courteous to all points of view on the air.

The one thing all of the above news anchors have in common is that none of them is conservative. Also, I would be stunned if any of them votes for Mitt Romney.

So, how will that affect press coverage with the election around the corner?

Well, the actual on-air reporting will likely be straight, but expect stories like Libya, not favorable to the president, to be downplayed. In addition, any gaffe the governor might make will definitely be highlighted.

As Walter Cronkite, a devoted liberal man, once said: "and that's the way it is."

It shouldn't be that way.

There should be more balance among TV news anchors. But that will never happen in this country.

Such is life.

Bill O'Reilly is a veteran news anchor, host of Fox News show "The O'Reilly Factor," and author of the book "Who's Looking Out for You."

In all fairness to the surge, it probably helped reinforce what the Awakening Councils did. All the surge did, however, was put into cement the consequences of the biggest foreign policy blunder since Barbarossa.

re: #271 goddamnedfrank

The surge just came in after the fact and took credit for work done by the Sunni Awakening Councils.

Untrue. It supported those councils and provided the firepower needed to run Al-Qaeda out of the areas the councils were ready to operate in, after which the councils provided the troops to ensure Al-Qaeda did not come back. But without that firepower and support, the Awakening Councils would have been bogged down and hammered by terrorist actions. At best it would have been a Sunni civil war. The surge gave the Awakening the aid it needed to succeed.

Lower Manhattan is expecting to see significant flooding - expected high tide plus storm surge is likely to flood areas including Battery Park City, WTC, and the Battery. Similar stories along the riverfront around Manhattan and the other boroughs. I expect to see significant flooding along the Passaic River in all the usual places and then some (with all the leaves that have fallen thus far, storm drains are likely to clog up - adding to localized heavy flooding.

Why This Poll Is Different

First, it allows us to ask the same people for their opinion repeatedly over time. In comparison to most polls, this leads to much more stable outcomes; changes that we see are true changes in people's opinions and not the result of random fluctuations in who gets asked the questions.

Second, we may be more accurately capturing the likely votes of a greater number of voters in the crucial “middle” (i.e., not closely aligned with either candidate) by allowing respondents to more precisely assign their own numerical probability (or percent chance) to both the likelihood that they will vote and the likelihood that they will vote for a particular candidate. By comparison, traditional polls may not be fully capturing the intentions of these voters because they rely on less precise qualitative metrics (such as somewhat likely and somewhat unlikely) when asking respondents to indicate for whom they may vote and the likelihood that they will vote.

Hey, if you have to cover a hurricane would you rather be in NYC or Houston? Or god-forsaken Florida?

Having grown up in the Midwest and currently residing in OK I'm somewhat bemused by the hysteria over 70 mph winds, to be honest. We lived in NJ during a hurricane that caused lots of flooding and beach damage years ago and I remember it's being just a rain storm.

Hopefully it won't hit the same time as the cold front, because icy cold rain sucks.

With Sandy, it's the storm surge that's causing all the sweating, which I can sympathize with when I consider that portions of major cities here in Hampton Roads flood if we have a stiff rain for longer than a day. The winds are a secondary concern, but that's over fallen trees or limbs that could damage property and take down power lines.

Oddest part was a "timeline" of sorts for Romney and Obama, which apparently was supposed to show that Mitt had his kids first and more often, and Obama waited, among other things. Very odd items in that section.

re: #304 funky chicken

Sure.

A hurricane normally leaves after a dozen hours or so. This storm is expected to have an extended duration of 12-24 hours or more with tropical storm or higher winds. The size of the storm is even more impressive than other recent hurricanes. It might not have a classic hurricane shape at this point, but the storm extends for hundreds of miles in all directions; it puts 1/3 of the nation at risk by size (and 60+ million people are likely to be directly impacted). It's extending tropical storm force winds 500+ miles from the center. That's huge.

The problem with this storm is that it's going to hook to the West along the Jersey Shore in a way that brings the worst of the storm surge to the NYC metro area directly. The geography means that the surge will be funneled into NY Harbor - causing the potential for record/near-record flooding.

Add to that a cold front and secondary low coming in from Canada that will transfer/add to the energy from Sandy along the coast - which is part of the reason for the hook to the West (the other reason being a blocking High in the North Atlantic that is helping to prevent the storm from kicking out to sea).

The storm has already killed 65 people, most of them in Haiti, thus far.

Oh, while the rain is expected to be significant, because of the cold front associated with the system coming in from the West, there are parts of West Virginia, VA, and PA that are likely to see significant snowfall.

My friends husband is in Brooklyn now. His boss nixed their flying home to CA Friday, decided to allow them to leave tomorrow morning.

What are chances?

What a fucking idiot.

Statistics, like science in general, apparently is gay. Therefore GOP denialists must oppose anything that challenges their worldview.

Oh, and Christie just gave a shoutout to Pres. Obama in getting in touch and making necessary preparations for FEMA and coordination before, during, and after the storm.

Good on him. Has the Romney/Ryan team offered a rebuttal yet?

Well, the wife and I are fully stocked up, down to the cheap prosecco and OJ for hurricane mimosas.

We have only one tree near our apartment and it'd take some really funky physics for it to put a branch through our window. We're at 89th and 2nd, so we're not in an evacuation zone even in the worst-case scenario. I'm fully charging my Kindle and downloading the complete works of Mark Twain and Origin of the Species, which I've never actually read through.

There is a Hurricane app from the Red Cross with lots of useful whizzbangs. I suggest it.

Or call **73327677 from your phone to download it.

OK. I remember there was flooding in north NJ when we lived there for the hurricane. We were in Marlton, and it was just ... rainy for a couple of days. My husband evacuated his plane from McGuire but the kids and I sat at home. Oh, the joys of being married to a military pilot. A good friend sat for a week without power in Charleston after a hurricane once. Her, 2 kids, looting, sweating, husband somewhere else with his plane. Just lovely....

You are reading into my words things that are not there. "Cost" can mean a good number of things and I did not specify which things I was referring to, I left that open for a reason. nor did I say the initial invasion was worth it.

Don't try to 'read between the lines' with me. Read what's on the line because that's what I'm saying.

You said the cost was worth it. And that is in no way debatable, regardless of your vague reference. Be it money or lives.

370 Gus  Sun, Oct 28, 2012 11:26:33am

Same old shit. The Greenwald cult wants people not to vote for Obama to "teach him a lesson" for allegedly not being progressive enough, drones, NDAA, etc. If Romney wins then what? The long term goal of electing someone who would be "progressive enough" would involve whom? Bernie Sanders? Sanders wouldn't even make it out of the primary nor would he be even be electable in a presidential race. The fact is that we are not even close to electing a progressive purist into the White House for decades to come. Take this route and lose not only 2012 but 2016.

re: #153 A Mom Anon

For any of you familiar with San Francisco, can you point me to a couple of nice hotels with a moderate price range? The Husband and I are going to Yosemite,Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks for our 20th wedding anniversary next summer. We'll be flying into and out of SF and staying there a couple of days before heading home. Also,if you can, name a couple of must eat at restaurants that won't break the bank. Thanks in advance.

Since I live in the area, I haven't stayed in the hotels, but I happen to have been inside the Hotel Bijou, and it seems pleasant enough -- it's also well-reviewed. It's much cheaper than most of the hotels in that area because it's right on the edge of the Tenderloin -- turn west and you're in it. But if you turn east or north, you're right downtown, BART is right there, and Market street (lots of bus, cable and streetcar lines).

San Francisco is foodie heaven. Pick your food variety and price level and try yelp, or the local newspapers, or zillions of websites -- you'll find something you like. There are a couple of Indian restaurants right next to the Bijou that I'm fond of, and all sorts (and price levels) of restaurants nearby. Or ask at the front desk -- I heard them giving some good advice when I was in there.

To A Mom Anon:

Holiday Inn on Eighth St is decent and reasonable for the area. There's also a couple of hotels at Fisherman's Wharf that are cheaper than many...one is a Holiday Inn Express and the other, I think was a Days Inn.

If you want really inexpensive, stay at the airport (SFO) and commute. It's $8 each way and about 15-30 minutes based on where you want to go.

(I've stayed at the Holiday Inn on 8th and one at SFO.)

Have to disagree. I enjoyed reading Origin of Species. I haven't yet delved into his book on barnacles, though. I suspect that one probably is yawn-inducing.
