As Hurricane Sandy Strikes, Mitt Romney Wants to Drastically Cut Federal Disaster Relief

Romney’s policies are dangerous and short-sighted
Politics • Views: 33,772

As Hurricane Sandy prepares to slam into the east coast, threatening disastrous flooding for millions of people, we should mention that Republican candidate Mitt Romney wants to drastically cut federal disaster relief programs like FEMA.

And we should also mention that the Republican Party’s 2011 spending bill slashed the budget for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, cutting $700 million intended for an overhaul of America’s aging weather satellite system.

Few working satellites, little aid in a disaster. What could possibly go wrong?
That's one way to turn a storm into a disaster of biblical proportion.

One of the reasons that folks like Gov. Christie, Gov. Cuomo and Mayor Bloomberg are even able to indicate flood evacuations and have some insight into where and how to expect damage is due to the scientists at the NOAA and other federally funded labs providing data, analysis, and the equipment that provides storm tracks and forecasts.

Cutting funding to the NOAA would put millions of people at risk from floods and loss of life.

The hydrologists at the NOAA are advising about potential inland flooding - from rivers and streams, as well as urban flooding and storm surge along the coast. Flooding costs the nation billions of dollars annually in damage, so anything that can mitigate those costs is worthwhile.

It allows political leaders to go ahead and issue evacuations to those that need it while not unduly evacuating areas that might not need them - focusing where resources can and should be devoted.

So far:
NYC public schools closed Mon
PATH, MTA, NJ Transit, LIRR, and Metro North all shutdown tomorrow (beginning later this evening).
Evacuations in NYC Zone A.
NJ Gov. Christie is suggesting that local leaders shut schools across NJ (a local decision). I think they'll be heeding that advice.

Flight cancellations:

More than 700 U.S. flights have been canceled for Sunday and 3,700 have been canceled for Monday. That number is expected to rise.

Every airline has issued a flexible travel policy that allows customers to make changes to their reservations with no penalty. Check your individual carrier's homepage for details.

United Airlines, with a hub in Newark, N.J., has been the most aggressive so far in getting ahead of the storm. According to FlightAware, the airline has cancelled more than 300 flights today.

The airline told ABCNews the majority of those flights are scheduled for Sunday evening.

"United is working to operate a normal schedule to the east coast through the late afternoon hours. We have selectively canceled flights beginning this evening through tomorrow to many airports in the northeast and mid-Atlantic states," Rahsaan Johnson, an airline spokesperson, said in an email.

"Travelers who are booked on a flight to or from a city in the storm's path this evening or Monday should assume it is delayed or canceled and should verify flight status at united.com. Customers whose flights are canceled or delayed more than two hours are eligible for a refund."

To everyone who commented on my granddaughter being diagnosed with Down Syndrome, here is a message from my daughter:

The most important thing is to be positive, to realize that Rebecca is perfect as she is and to love and cherish her like every other member of the family. That is the most important. We are not sad or sorry about the way she was born and we hope you won't be either! Feel free to ask any questions you have, we will be happy to answer (to the best of our ability).

Thank you all for your support and encouragement, they are appreciated!

At the very least, your granddaughter has been born in a time and in a society that no longer shuns families and children who aren't some fictional standard of normal. I can't imagine the challenges that your family will face, yet I can be proud that the taboo is no longer tolerated in most circles.

Rebecca will grow surrounded by family that love her --isn't that the basic thing we want for all our children?

Starting to rain here in Philly.

I'm going to keep an eye on the construction site across the street. Most of it is 4-5' below street level and has no obvious drainage or access to the storm drains at street level. (And these currently are blocked with wire mesh and gravel - I presume to protect against spills or something related to the construction work.)

re: #19 Gretchen G.Tiger

The biggest reason I feel bad for Down Syndrome people is that they so often outlive their parents and loved ones, and are left to the care of people with no direct connection. Some of those people can be wonderful, but it's a draining field, and there's a lot of burnout and a lot of people who just can't provide the love that they need.

Being born into an extended family with very close ties like Alouette's is the best possible fate for a Down Syndrome child.

I think there's a very real strain of jealousy and discontent out there. There are families (for example) who see strangers and immigrants get much farther than they and their children because they have come to the country better educated, or people who got farther than they did by virtue of being born rich.

Voting Republican is to be expecting altruism from big business, appeased by tax cuts and less regulation. "Sloppy seconds" for the middle class.

It's not a fear of federalism breaking down that motivates such attitudes. Rather, it's just simple greed and indifference. Their attitude is summed up by four words: "It's not my problem." If the folks in the next state over get body-slammed by a major hurricane and can't afford the clean-up, "it's not my problem." If the neighboring state is in need of a cash infusion to stay solvent, "it's not my problem." But when it's "my problem," then suddenly the demands go out for help because "This is America, we help each other!"

39 moderatelyradicalliberal  Sun, Oct 28, 2012 12:25:24pm

Most of what the Federal Government does is stuff that needs to be done. And in a nation of 300 million people, that's a lot. It is the price we pay for living in a modern first world nation. That's the reality and those who want to "slash" government are living in a fantasy world. If you want small government, move to a third world nation. There are plenty of places with very little government action and intervention in which people are for the most part left to their own devices. People don't pay taxes and get virtually no government services. I say we send all of the small government conservatives there so the rest of us can have nice things.

Basically, it's a place for white males to complain about how their losing their privilege, except they don't really see it that way. They're totally not racist, though, and in fact, it turns out that a lot of black people are racist. Like Colin Powell:

The non-news story of yesterday was Colin Powell endorsed Barack Obama. Again. Yaaawwwnnn! His endorsement leaves only three possibilities. 1. Powell was a chameleon con-man for his entire career. 2. He’s a racist. Or 3. He’s an idiot. There’s more than a pretty good chance he’s all three!

I've been watching Downton Abbey (very addictive) and one of the things that I find the most fascinating is the extent to which the servants identify with the people they work for. I guess house slave mentality happens everywhere with all people.

Anyway the GOP is the modern party of the aristocracy and their base is comprised of their house servants who see their fate as being directly tied to what happens to their masters. They believe the social order is as it should be and that their masters actually care about them and will take care of them. The GOP is basically the top 1% and the people who install their cable.

You can, but only if you give them something to identify with that then becomes so key to their identity that they will literally harm themselves rather than go against this ideal. In other words, hating liberals and Democrats, and/or gays, foreigners, the UN, etc.

The vast majority of those who vote Republican aren't full-blown cultists, or racists, or any -ist. They're people who don't really agree with any Republican policies, but the idea of voting anything else is unthinkable. Opposing Democrats, liberals, and the socialist Commie in the White House is core to their self-image. It's their rock, the one thing they know about themselves.

Something a lot of people don't get is that Walter's conversion is really being shown as a sincere one. Orthodox Jews don't allow converts easily, and you have to convince a bunch of guys who are not easily impressed and probably weirded out that you want to convert that you have the faith and the knowledge to be a practicing Jew.

Yeah, what it really comes down to is most people just want to live safe, ordered, and peaceful lives. Positioning Democrats as the enemy of that system, real or perceived, is bound to get people riled up.

The real question is how can you break people's investment into what actually is a flawed system.

And if you ask me, it's high time we got rid of the wasteful, bloated FAA and the silly flight traffic controllers. We almost never hear of midair collisions, so obviously they aren't really all that necessary. Surely the private airlines could handle things, if only they were set free of the tyrannical chains of government regulation. If I were the CEO of Real American Airlines, I wouldn't want some unelected bureaucrat dictating to my pilots where they could fly, and how high, and which runway they could land on, and and what checklists they had to follow, and how many hours of sleep they had to have, and so forth.

‘Anti-Business’ Obama Is Best President For Corporate Profits Since 1900

Since he came into office, Republicans have consistently attacked President Obama for supposedly being anti-business. As ThinkProgress noted last week, the data shows that this charge is nonsense.

In fact, as the financial website Motley Fool noted today, President Obama is far and away the best president for corporate profits since 1900.

The right wing and wingnut outlets from the Daily Mail to Fox to the one and only Jim Hoft are pushing this headline:

Madonna’s mention of Obama draws boos

NEW ORLEANS: Madonna drew boos and triggered a walkout by several concertgoers after she touted President Barack Obama on her “MDNA Tour” in New Orleans.

The Material Girl asked during Saturday night’s performance: “Who’s registered to vote?” She added: “I don’t care who you vote for as long as you vote for Obama.”

Drawing boos in touting Obama over Republican Mitt Romney, Madonna followed: “Seriously, I don’t care who you vote for ... Do not take this privilege for granted. Go vote.” Madonna is often outspoken.

[...]

Seriously? As if in NOLA there's a huge stampede of anti-Obama folk at a Madonna concert?

From the description of Madonna's actions, it hardly sounds like a "political lecture".

I suspect that various interests are just trying to make something out of nothing about those who booed.

Personally, I can't relate to people who would spend lots of money on this kind of thing, so intuitively I'm not going to be able to judge what I would have done in this situation.

Yet it strikes me like that earlier news article from the Tribune co. that I linked. "A poll" was cited - but one has to dig down into the article to try and determine exactly who or what was doing the polling, and then the source is referenced indirectly by referring to what that same organization did in the past.

I'm currently knuckling down for the storm. Where I am in DC, we will only get "grazed." Yet, conditions will be worse than they were for the derecho earlier this year.

Up north it is going to hit HARD.

The thing about this storm is that it is being fed a vast amount of energy - more than usual due to shifting currents ultimately due to climate - mixed with just bad luck and a full moon.

All together, this means it is going to grind away for much longer than a normal hurricane.

Just this year, the US had the greatest, most widespread and hottest heatwaves on record, the most bizarre winter on record, a derecho, droughts that led to massive wildfires and multi-state crop failures.

The total damages from all these climate shifts is already in the hundreds of billions of dollars.

We will see how high that is after one of our largest metro areas gets slammed.

A biblically minded person would believe that God is trying to tell us something is going on that we are not paying attention to.

It is called climate change.

It will only get worse from here on out, and out leaders can't even utter the words.

If it didn't mean the ultimate collapse of our nation and the deaths of billions, I would be amused at the Darwin Award grade stupidity that ignores and denies such things. Instead, I'm trapped with these morons and they vote republican without looking out their windows and thinking.

If Romney wins, you can literally say it is over for America - because the precious window where we can start fixing things and keep it at just really bad, as opposed to catastrophic will close.

Jim the Dim is on top of the story:

He even claims to have a video:

Yeah, that video sure is condemnatory.

According to the AP, she "drew boos and triggered a walkout by several concertgoers." So there's that. Granted, LA is probably one of our most racist states.

Well, I have everything charged up, extra batteries, candles, water bottles filled up, and a cooler of ice. Plus some cooked food and a supply of cheese, bread, and other canned goods.

And books in case the power goes out.

Tide gauge readings can be quite enlightening. E.g., here is the Kahului data:

The tsunami can be seen as perturbation, ringing, of the Pacific ocean.

I would be more afraid of her flashing her titty like she has earlier on the tour. I don't want to see that. I mean, really, now she's doing that? Pushing 55?

But her bobbies are only 21.

the big question in the election for tea leave readers these days is whether the average lead that romney has in the national polls, 1%, is consistent with the electoral college data which shows obama with a three state lead. most if not all of romney's lead in the national comes from rassmussen and especially gallup, which has been an outlier all year

to test these numbers against each other, i entered the 2010 census pctg of national population for each state, and today's real clear politics average for each state, when there was one. it turns out that polling data is nonexistent for four or five small states such as alabama, alaska, wyoming, and delaware. for these states i used the common scientific method i learned while working for the U.S. Army, technically know as SWAG, or Super Wild Ass Guess

my results?
obama 46.2
romney 45.4

given that it seems more likely that gallup's single poll with one nationalized set of assumptions about the electorate is more likely to be wrong than several polls per state each with individual assumptions about the electorate, perhaps more in tune with the pollster's knowledge of that individual state, i conclude that gallup's assumptions are like whack, d00d.

That seems like an awful lot of work to come to the conclusion:

i conclude that gallup's assumptions are like whack, d00d.

That you can see just by looking at the numbers :)

but what is better in a election season than to substantiate one's prejudices with a volley of factitious detail?

re: #97 Gus

Gov. Christie said pretty much the same thing at his afternoon presser. He'd rather have people pissed at him for erring on the side of caution, but that's a damned sight better than having to attend funerals for those lost in the storm who didn't heed the advice to evacuate to low lying areas. Or the emergency personnel who put themselves at risk trying to save those who thought they could outlast mother nature.
