Exactly. Doing research on the ship in question, it a Container Ship that is 961 feet long, with a breadth of 131.2 ft.

The data says "out of range", but here is the thing. Three Cruise Liners are right now heading south through same area, and a little bit more to the east, which is farther off shore. So, where did it go, if it is "out of range"?

The Three cruise liners are the Aidaluna from Italy (252m x 38m), the Carnival Miracle (293m x 32m), and the Explorer of the Seas (311m x 38m)

The RWNJ's sure are paranoid about the UN election monitors...

Daniel Thomas says:
October 25, 2012 at 4:25 am

The UN has one mission only and that is the implementation of global socialism with itself as the government.

There were two obstacle states blocking the mission.

One formally known as Great Britain but now just Britain and the other the United States of America.

With the absorbtion of Britain into the openly socialist European Union the United States now stands alone in this historic battle.

If the incumbent socialist is re-elected to the White House the last flame of liberty will be extinguished and with it the last hope of a free world.

I remain optimistic that the American people will choose freedom in November and keep that flame burning despite the unrestrained efforts of the UN.

so, ok, here is my lesson for tonite:

dating contact woman makes an effort to call me up and we have a voluble conversation for three hours about everything and anything as a matter of fact i just got off the phone

in the middle of it she wants to hear all about my divorce and i'm a very open person. but i've "only" been divorced for a year and a half and she thinks men need at least three years to get over it. but we go on talking for another two hours well you'd think we get along well and at least should go out on a date, what?

but i'm an american i know the american system and when we finally hang up and say goodbye i can hear the thanks nice to meet you but no thanks in the tone of her voice loud and clear well hell what can you say

Really awe inspiring footage of last years Tsunami in Japan, I have not seen this footage or this view before. The large harbor breakwaters and the giant (25-30') seawall between the port and the town did nothing. Mother nature really does laugh at mans attempts to protect themselves from her...

(The water does not start to come back into the harbor until about 2:30, after that it gets interesting fast. The second surge is larger than the first and pretty much chews up the whole town.)

Sandy Update

Hurricane Sandy was strengthening and is expected to bring a "life-threatening storm surge", the U.S. National Hurricane Center said early Monday.

Maximum sustained winds of about 85 miles per hour (140 km per hour) were recorded as the storm lumbered toward the densely populated East Coast, leaving millions of residents with only hours to prepare for its onslaught as forecasters warned that a wall of water up to 11 feet high could hit New York City.

She is about 35 miles South of Norfolk (due East of Elizabeth city) and about 25 miles offshore, headed South (181°) at 21.4 knots.

Apparently a Disney cruise ship was battered by the storm; video showed the pool sloshing all over and a mess of cabins and other spaces.

With a storm this size, the chance for rogue waves is quite high. Large fetch, strong winds, and you've got the possibilities for a real bad time, even with the best tech.

Power still on here... Steady rain at this point and a stiff wind which seems lighter than what we were getting last night.

Wunderground's alerts have been updated, and the high wind warnings are only in effect here until 6:00 PM. I guess they'll extend them at that point, but if that's all we got I would gladly take it.

Really? NJ Gov. Christie indicated that the President had been in contact with him yesterday and that the disaster declarations were being put in place. The declaration for NJ was signed this morning.

Fact is that the disaster declarations are generally retroactive in nature to allow for the states to be reimbursed for disaster expenditures. For NJ, the declaration is retroactive to the 26th (a similar story to other states up and down the East Coast).

I'm taking pictures of a construction site across the street from on high that has a load of construction equipment in it. Got a "dry" picture yesterday and one this morning with just puddles there so far. Given that the site is 4-5' lower than the sidewalk and probably doesn't drain well I expect a small lake there by Wednesday.

re: #276 NJDhockeyfan

There's already probably some minor flooding in the open cut areas in Brooklyn and Queens, but the subways aren't flooded AFAIK. With Irene, the worry was the rain plus a strong storm surge; here, the surge is expected to be even more severe but the rain isn't going to be as much of a concern in NYC proper. They're expecting more rain from NYC south.

I'm expecting the big problems beginning around 6pm through midnight tonight as the high tide tonight coincides with landfall and the surge.

Trenberth: Hurricane Sandy Mixes Super-Storm Conditions With Climate Change

The sea surface temperatures along the Atlantic coast have been running at over 3C above normal for a region extending 800km off shore all the way from Florida to Canada. Global warming contributes 0.6C to this. With every degree C, the water holding of the atmosphere goes up 7%, and the moisture provides fuel for the tropical storm, increases its intensity, and magnifies the rainfall by double that amount compared with normal conditions.

Global climate change has contributed to the higher sea surface and ocean temperatures, and a warmer and moister atmosphere, and its effects are in the range of 5 to 10%. Natural variability and weather has provided the perhaps optimal conditions of a hurricane running into extra-tropical conditions to make for a huge intense storm, enhanced by global warming influences.

Only a sneak preview of what we're in for give or take a few decades.

That was the LI Express (and it rearranged things pretty completely out by Shinnecock (creating the inlet). That storm was notable for its speed.

This storm? Sheer size, storm surge are likely to be even worse especially for NYC proper.

LI Express made landfall on central LI. The storm surge was worst to the east.

Sandy? Storm surge to be worse on the north side of landfall (expected in AC vicinity). That puts it in record territory compared to 1938 or Irene, Gloria, or any other Nor'easter/hurricane on record.

Note the speed of movement drop. That means that there will be a lot of rain into a mountainous area with lots of small drainage basins that normally do not see rainfall of that magnitude. And then it all goes into the Susquehanna drainage and floods out Binghamton, Elmira, and Harrisburg.

Mitt Romney’s Hurricane Sandy plans

In North Carolina, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Virginia, the Romney camp will be collecting supplies at campaign offices to deliver local storm relief, and in Virginia, staffers will be collecting storm relief supplies on the Romney campaign bus, Saul said.

On Romney’s Twitter and Facebook feeds and Web site, the campaign has posted an appeal to supporters to make donations to the Red Cross, and Romney on Monday issued a message to those in the path of the storm.

Professional emergency managers have long agreed that monetary donations, not supplies, are most effective in the hours after a major disaster.

“For safety’s sake, as you and your family prepare for the storm, please be sure to bring any yard signs inside. In high winds they can be dangerous, and cause damage to homes and property,” the message reads. “I’m never prouder of America than when I see how we pull together in a crisis. There’s nothing that we can’t handle when we stand together.”

Romney wants more responsibility for emergency management in states

Asked Monday whether Romney held the same position he did at the June 2011 debate, Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg explained the candidate believes "states should be in charge of emergency management in responding to storms and other natural disasters in their jurisdictions."

"As the first responders, states are in the best position to aid affected individuals and communities, and to direct resources and assistance to where they are needed most," Henneberg said. "This includes help from the federal government and FEMA."

On Sunday, President Barack Obama visited the headquarters of FEMA in Washington, and said the federal government has resources ready to deal with the storm.

"You need to take this seriously and take guidance from state and local officials," Obama said, adding he was "confident that the resources are in place."

"My main message is we have to take this seriously," he said. "The federal government is working effectively with the state and local governments."

Mitt Romney In GOP Debate: Shut Down Federal Disaster Agency, Send Responsibility To The States

During a CNN debate at the height of the GOP primary, Mitt Romney was asked, in the context of the Joplin disaster and FEMA's cash crunch, whether the agency should be shuttered so that states can individually take over responsibility for disaster response.

"Absolutely," he said. "Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction. And if you can go even further, and send it back to the private sector, that's even better. Instead of thinking, in the federal budget, what we should cut, we should ask the opposite question, what should we keep?"

"Including disaster relief, though?" debate moderator John King asked Romney.

"We cannot -- we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids," Romney replied. "It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we'll all be dead and gone before it's paid off. It makes no sense at all."

Looking past the syllogism, what should be returned to the states and privatized?

NASA, military, cancer research, EPA (no just ban it entirely), FDA?

As a supposed 'businessman' he's supposed to understand efficiencies in command and resource management through centralized control. Every large business tries to coalesce control into a central structure. Having one federal EPA instead of 50 mini EPA entities seems like the more cost effective and efficient thing to do. What if we had 50 armies?

How Romney logically reconciles this I'm interested to know.

If it was turned back to the states, how do you think states would pay for disaster recovery? By de-funding other programs, that's how.

Making disaster response a state responsibility is not privatization. Moreover, Romney was talking best practices, and shifting funds where possible does not mean shutting down FEMA entirely. And lastly this:

"We cannot -- we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids," Romney replied. "It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we'll all be dead and gone before it's paid off.

He reconciles it the same way everyone else does: "What I'm saying is complete bullshit, but it sure will help out with the vote counts!"

Disaster relief back to the states? Yeah, that's a terrific idea. It will last right up until the first actual disaster happens. Then the state(s) hit will hold out their hand and beg for federal money. Alright boys, step right up, get in line to tell the state(s) to go fuck themselves and handle their own disaster relief, no fedbux for you!

See how well that goes over politically.

You're accepting Mitt's muddled logic: how are things supposed to be cheaper if you revert from having one entity serve fifty states to fifty states having their own entity?

Misinformation/information watch:

In Atlantic City, earlier reports that part of the city's historic boardwalk north of the new Revel casino had washed away this morning were false, county officials said.

But the storm surge flooded streets surrounding the ocean-front casinos, which closed at 4 p.m. Sunday. Nearly 500 people who fled the area are in Atlantic County shelters, a county spokeswoman said.

Parts of Black Horse Pike in West Atlantic City, Route 30 and Route 9 in Absecon, Route 559 in Somers Point and Route 322 in Hamilton are already flooded, county officials said. Roads in Hamilton Township and Mays Landing were also impassable.

In Ocean County, police shut down the Mathis and Mantoloking bridges this morning, blocking all access to Seaside Heights. Several streets in Lavalette were already lined with floating debris brought on by the surging ocean water during the morning high tide.

"They built up those dunes about 8 feet high, and now they're gone," said Jim McCann, standing outside his Lavalette house with his wife, Denise.

Both campaigns suspending for this event and working towards contributions for disaster relief is the natural reaction to expect. It makes sense from both a human and political standpoint. Who "did it first" is pointless and essentially a meaningless talking point.

And that they make appearances afterwards towards viewing or a photo op is a no-brainer as well. It's a no-win situation, but probably better to be seen and yelled at for doing a photo op than disappearing and being called a heartless bastard who doesn't care.

And I seen no reason to talk about one side or the other "politicizing" Sandy until a major spokesman does it. That the snivelers along the margins are going to do it right away is to be expected as well. It's what they do.

Nice how you completely cut off from the article what he said in the R debate

The now-GOP nominee continued, "Instead of thinking in the federal budget, what we should cut - we should ask ourselves the opposite question. What should we keep? We should take all of what we're doing at the federal level and say, what are the things we're doing that we don't have to do?"

King interjected, asking "Including disaster relief?"

"We cannot - we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids," Romney said. "It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we'll all be dead and gone before it's paid off. It makes no sense at all."

Rehberg is the Republican in the race, BTW. From the article:

Like something straight out of the fantasies of a black helicopter conspiracy theorist, one of the latest ads in the Montana Senate race comes with a big twist.

Launched last week with a $500,000 buy from an environmental group, the ad is meant to attack Republican Rep. Denny Rehberg for supporting an expansion of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s authority over federal land in border areas. It portrays a man using a hunting rifle to shoot out what is supposed to be a department surveillance camera tracking him and his son in the forest — as shown from the perspective of the camera.

But the real surprise comes at the end of the 30-second spot when it reveals which candidate the group supports: not Democratic Sen. Jon Tester, but the Libertarian nominee Dan Cox.

The ad was paid for by the Montana Hunters and Anglers Leadership Fund. The Missoulian reports that the group was financed earlier this year by the League of Conservation Voters, which has raised money for Tester.

Simple solution: Order them not to respond. If you choose to stay in a danger zone like that, you're on your own. If your house floods, you drown.

Seriously? Come on, man. That flies in the face of why anyone becomes an emergency worker in the first place.

Plus, imagine the shitstorm the first time some politician from either party tells the emergency workers not to respond to a storm and not to get people out.

Email I just got from Obama's office:

Thomas --

This is a serious storm, but we are going to do what it takes to keep people safe and secure, and make sure the communities affected get the assistance they need. FEMA is working with state and local governments to respond effectively. We all owe a debt of thanks to the first responders who will be dealing with the immediate impact of the storm.

If you live in the storm's path, please listen to state and local authorities about where and how to take shelter and stay safe -- and encourage your friends and family to do the same. If you are asked to evacuate, please take that seriously.

For more information on how to prepare for this storm, visit Ready.gov.

And if you'd like to find out how to support relief efforts where they're needed most, please visit the Red Cross or your local relief organization:

1. Make your own forecast.
Though television stations are privately owned, they owe their access to the wireless spectrum to the Federal Communications Commission. Furthermore, all forecasts provided by your local weatherman are actually sourced from the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center. You should not rely on these.
Luckily, it's easy enough to make your own weather vane, barometer, hygrometer and anemeter. Should you be low on time, just throw some fiat currency in the air — it's worthless anyway! — and watch where it flies. Record the direction and wind speed. If Krugerrands also flutter away, seek shelter immediately.

Hurricane Sandy is God's Vengeance for Lisa Miller

"God's judgment is upon this country" and Hurricane Sandy was an example of God's vengeance:

I didn't expect most of you to agree with my statement. But I tell you this the tragedy here is that a little six year old Christian girl and her born again Mother had to flee America in order to obey God's Word.

And now a Minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ is facing imprisonment for helping protect a little child from being removed from her biological Christian Mother and turned over to a stranger.

Christians who loved and nurtured Lisa and Isabella through the six plus years are also being sued for obeying God's Word. So look in the mirror and decide where your commitment is.

Vengeance is God's and He does repay.

Beck: 'Today Officially is the Day That I no Longer Recognize My Country'

It has become quite clear that the attack that killed Libyan ambassador Christopher Stevens in Benghazi is now Glenn Beck's primary obsession as both his radio and television programs are now dominated by the topic, prompting Beck to cycle between screaming outrage and heartbroken weeping, as he did on Friday when he unleashed his fury against President Obama for being so "arrogant" that he didn't really care what happened to his hand-picked ambassador; a realization that, in turn, caused him to break down in fear that America is going to "become a global terrifying force for evil" and declare that "today officially is the day that I no longer recognize my country":

Fox news is very upset that Sandy has interrupted, somewhat, their 24/7 Benghazi conspiracy fest.

Hume blasts media for Benghazi coverage: Fox News did ‘all the heavy lifting’

“One of the problems we’re having here is that it has fallen to this news organization, Fox News, and a couple of others to do all the heaving lifting on this story,” Hume complained to Fox News host Chris Wallace. “And the mainstream organizations that would be on this story like hounds if there were a Republican president have been remarkably reticent.”

“There’s been some good reporting but nothing on the scale and to the degree of specificity that you would expect by now,” he continued. “Normally, the big news organizations would have this thing out there and we would know a lot more than we do about what the president did, what he knew, when he knew it, when he made what order he made and on what basis. We still don’t know that and to some extent, a lot of the media who are a combined potent force have not done their job.”

Anti-LGBT pastor blames Hurricane Sandy on ‘the homosexual agenda’

A fundamentalist Christian minister has become the first to link Hurricane Sandy to marriage equality and the “homosexual agenda.”

Gay Star News first reported on Monday that Defend and Proclaim the Faith ministries founder John McTernan had posted on his blog that Hurricane Sandy is proof that “God is systematically destroying America.”

“If you add the area of the drought and now the hurricane together, it would be about 80 percent of the country!” the preacher wrote. “As I said, the Holy God of Israel is systematically destroying America right before our eyes.”

OT, but I need to vent.

You know what I frigging hate? Rude people.

I just went to Walgreens to pick up a few things before the storm hits. I'm in the grocery aisle picking up milk. There are two women standing by the cooler, one blocking my path. I politely say, "Excuse me." She moves. I get my milk and go to the next aisle over. I'm standing there looking for bread. I see two women in my peripheral vision.

Woman 1 (voice dripping with snark): Excuse you. We're trying to pass by here.

[CL notices that it's the same two women. Her hair begins to smolder.]

CL: Excuse you? Excuse YOU? What the hell is your problem? Can't you just be polite and say "Excuse me," like everyone else?

[Woman 1 & Woman 2 both turn around; snarky, curled-lip look on woman 1's face.]

Woman 1: I SAID excuse me. We needed to pass by and you were blocking the way.

CL: No you didn't. You said, "Excuse you. We're trying to pass by here."

Woman 1: Yes, I...Well, I mean I...

[CL, hair now in flames, sparks shooting from eyes, voice rising...]

CL: NO, you fucking didn't. I just passed by you on the next aisle and politely said, "Excuse me," didn't I?

Woman 1: Uh... [Apparently changes mind, both women turn back around and keep walking.]

CL (roaring now): Answer me. I politely said, "Excuse me" to you, didn't I? DIDN'T I??

[Women scurry to end of aisle & disappear around corner without looking back, leaving rest of people in aisle staring at Crazy Muslim Lady™ in shocked silence.]

WTF? I mean, really—W? T? F? Why do some adults act like effing junior high school punks? My fuse is all of about a millimeter long when it comes to that shit. Gah!

They want mortgages because they want to own something instead of living in parsonages where when they retire they have to move. This is becoming even more of a problem as they are often no longer getting pensions, but instead have 401Ks that they can't depend on a stable income from. All my pastor friends are getting second jobs. The only ones who make alot of money are megachurch pastors who don't know their parishioners or cult-like fundamentalists on broadcast. This after years of graduate school and long hours for the good ones. I know many good people who shouldn't be lumped in with the Christian FunlessMentals.

Gah!

Living next to New Jersey, working with New Jerseyites, and being a New Jerseyite by birth certificate* I can say that the issue is still *assholes*. It's just that NJ has a somewhat unfair reputation for having a higher proportion of them than other places. And I think being tucked between NYC and Philadelphia has something to do with it as well. A common dumping ground for snark from both directions.

I think there is a basic logic to types of communication. People in cold weather climates aren't going to stand round in the snow gabbing niceties. We say or ask what we need get a concise answer and get in out of the cold. Same with busy metropolitan areas. We just don't have time--we have to sit in traffic, or get to train station or us stop . . .

Warm weather people and rural people don't have these things to deal with and tend to be "more polite".

Personally, I think 10 minute messages on my voice mail to ask "will you watch my kid next thursday while hubby and I go to a event is really rude. Don't take up my time with the why's and wherefores I can figure it out. I'm a cold weather, metropolitan person.

I'm actually quite ambivalent about living in NJ. The problems stems from people looking at me like I live in some sort of toxic hellscape, with the implication that anyone who lives here is a fucking moron.

As I alluded to earlier, I used to work at a studio in just outside of Philly in Montgomery County. Took me nearly an hour each way to get there, and busted my ass the whole time.

That did not stop both management and my co-workers from "joking" with me that they hated NJ, and would be more than happy to see it leveled, save the Shore.

I had people from TX ask me why everyone was so "mean" up here, completely oblivious to many of the Lone Star State's failings.

NJ is far from perfect, but I'm tired of looking the other way when these horseshit stereotypes are thrown in my face.

And quite frankly, anyone pushing them today, in light of the trouble we're in from Sandy, is going to get an earful. Everyone has been warned.

EDIT: Changed "You have been warned" to "Everyone has been warned"

I think there is a basic logic to types of communication. People in cold weather climates aren't going to stand round in the snow gabbing niceties. We say or ask what we need get a concise answer and get in out of the cold.

I think that has a lot to do with it too. When I first moved up here I thought people from NY/NJ were incredibly rude. After a few years I stopped taking it personally and realized a lot of it had to do with crowding (NJ is the most populous sate in the nation and NYC, fuggedaboudit), weather, cultural differences, etc. Now someone has to really go out of their way (or catch me on a bad day) to piss me off for being rude.

LOL

There's been rivalry like that in every state I've lived in. But I can see the Soprano's stereotype being particulary strong. WE still get people thinking that Chicagoans walk around with Tommy Guns . . .

I met a few mobsters in NJ. One of our client's father was murdered after he was released from prison. Beat him with golf clubs and then ran him over.

Walgreens! Hmmm. Now that I think about it. Walgreens is actually a common place to run into creepiness all across the country. Like 7-11s.

re: #791 Gus

But I remember in Shop Rite... You'd be on the express lane and there would typically be some asshole behind you counting your items... If you were one over they'd start freaking out. Never had that happen in Denver.

LOL, true that! You know what I miss about Atlantic county? Wawa.

I sure don't miss the tree and reed pollen. I used to get the worst allergies. Achoo, achoo, achoo, achoo! Then recover. Then taking some stinking allergy medicine. Ick.

Dude, I live in NJ and am staring this storm in the face, so I'm allowed to complain. I'm originally from TX and I'm Muslim, so I have plenty of experience with horseshit stereotypes from all directions. Oh, and when I lived in AC I heard plenty of complaining from the natives about how rude NYer's are.

Weird, I don't have hardly any allergies up here. Back in TX? Ugh, tons. Especially cottonwood trees. Just thinking about them makes me itch.

Say what you want. I'm not in the mood for anti-Jersey stuff today.

Canadians?
Hmm?
