Steady sideways rain here. My stockade fence is about to blow away, and the wind is howling. It's getting scary now.

This cannot be over soon enough for my tastes.

It has been raining since 11PM last night and the winds are becoming more sustained. My friend and I are gonna walk down to the creek in a bit. The creek runs down from a mountain. Wish I still had my digital camera to take a pic.

California Dems say hundreds of voter registrations were flipped

Reporters with The Press-Enterprise explained on Sunday that they began interviewing voters after noting a huge surge of Republican voter registrations, including about 4,800 people who’d changed their affiliation to Republican.

“But voter interviews suggest that the per-registration bounty program, bankrolled by wealthy activists and large business interests, encouraged some signature gatherers to cut corners,” they wrote.

Voters told the paper they they never consented to being registered Republican, and some of them claimed they didn’t even know they were registering to vote. Some claimed their information was taken after they were asked to sign a petition, while others said they believed the forms were to sign up for doing poll work on Election Day. One person even said that they were promised a job in exchange for personal information, only to have a Republican voter registration arrive in the mail weeks later.

The story seems to confirm claims by California Democrats in Riverside County, who say that a Republican voter registration operation is wrongly adding voters to the Republican rolls to build the appearance of an advantage. That group, The Golden State Voter Participation Project, was targeted last month by the Riverside County Progressive Political Action Committee, which filed an official complaint with the county’s registrar of voters.

GOP strategist: Romney ‘right on the button’ in knocking FEMA

Bonjean said Monday he didn’t think “anybody cares” about Romney’s debate statements against the agency, instead suggesting that President Barack Obama could be jumping the gun by mobilizing FEMA ahead of Sandy’s arrival.

“I think people care about whether or not their power’s on, whether or not their basement’s going to be flooded,” he said. “And I think that if the president gets too far in front of this and something goes wrong, people are going to remember, hey, my power’s not out, and the president’s talking about FEMA. I’m not a real big fan of FEMA. That could sway their vote.”

Hurricane Sandy damage estimated to hit as much as $20 billion

Damage from the massive Hurricane Sandy battering the US East Coast could hit as much as $20 billion, disaster estimator Eqecat said Monday.

Eqecat said total damage costs could run from $10 billion to $20 billion, with insured damage of $5-10 billion.

“Sandy is a large storm, impacting 20 percent of the US population,” Tom Larsen, senior vice president, said in a statement.

That put the projected damages of Sandy, which has shut down public and business activity on much of the region from North Carolina to Massachusetts, more in line with Hurricane Ike in 2008, and larger than Hurricane Irene of 2011, which caused some $10 billion in damage.

Trump insists effort to extort Obama for charity has ‘tremendous momentum’

For some reason, “Fox & Friends” actually wanted to know on Monday what President Barack Obama’s response has been to Donald Trump’s attempt at extortion. There’s of course been no response, but that didn’t stop them from asking.

“First of all, I have to tell you there’s tremendous momentum,” he said. “When I originally did it the first little while, people didn’t quite get it. And there was a little bit of a backlash, there was some people who didn’t like it — but there were a lot of people that did. Now there’s unbelievable momentum.”

Unbelievable I can believe.

Random thought: this storm is a perfect alibi for whoever loses in the upcoming election.

During a call in show this morning, a local fundy said the storm is divine providence since it will throw the election to Romney. His reasoning was that turnout will be suppressed in the aftermath and low turnout favors Republicans. This is because God-fearing property owners are much more dedicated than the hippies and welfare bums who make up the Democrat constituency.

Mitt Romney’s final attempt to swing Ohio polls in his direction is a bit too much for a number of political reporters, and is now facing an aggressive response from the Obama campaign.

In news articles, tweets, and other media, members of the national press, usually reluctant to criticize campaigns directly, have taken Romney to task for running a misleading TV ad creating the false impression that Jeep will ship jobs to China because of President Obama’s auto rescue.

Romney and FEMA: Would Republican favor local approach?

Romney hasn’t specifically explained in what ways or by what amount he’d try to cut FEMA funding, but he has set ambitious goals for reducing federal outlays other than on defense and entitlement programs.

He has endorsed the House-passed fiscal year 2013 budget blueprint which called for greater efficiency in disaster relief spending.
...
He also said on his campaign Website that he wants to see Congress enact the budget plan drafted by his running mate, House Budget Committee chairman Paul Ryan, which the House passed last March but which the Senate rejected.

The Ryan blueprint said it seeks to “ensure that those state and local governments most in need are receiving the assistance required.”

It calls for “improving efficiencies in state and local programs” when it comes to disaster recovery and “improved cost-estimating and efforts to help states and localities use existing resources to help communities recover from disasters expeditiously and cost-effectively.”
...
The GOP plan argues that the Obama administration has been too liberal in its use of taxpayer funds by labeling too many events as disasters worthy of federal money.

“The current administration has issued a total of 2,213 disaster declarations— 66 percent of all FEMA disaster declarations since 1953 in the span of three years alone,” said the Budget Committee report. That report also cites a study by the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office which found that from 2002 to 2011, “presidents have declared 35 percent more disasters than they did during the preceding decade.”

The Budget Committee argued that “When disaster-relief decisions are not made judiciously, limited resources are diverted away from communities that are truly in need.”

The GOP plan said Congress ought to “take a closer look at” steps such as reducing federal spending “by updating disaster declaration eligibility indicators, like per capita thresholds and other major disaster metrics, by (for example) adjusting for inflation.”

Congress must try to “increase transparency in the way that disaster declaration decisions are made,” the report said, which seems to imply that some disaster declarations are not made for legitimate reasons but rather because a powerful member of Congress or governor is able to persuade the president to send federal money.

Romney: Federal Disaster Spending is "Immoral."

How Romney and Ryan Would Severely Impair Disaster Relief Efforts.

Last year, after a major tornado and flood struck the United States, Romney was asked in a debate about federal disaster relief funding. Romney not only suggested shuttering FEMA and sending responsibility for disaster relief "back to the private sector," but also said it would be "immoral" for the federal government to fund disaster relief efforts without cutting the budget elsewhere. "It makes no sense at all," Romney concluded. Watch it:

Ryan's 2012 budget took a similar approach to disaster funding. As The Hill noted in May 2012, Ryan's budget called for any disaster relief funding to "be fully offset within the discretionary levels provided in this resolution." In other words, Congress would have to agree on cuts elsewhere in the budget if it wanted to dole out funds after a disaster. This idea was so far out of the mainstream that even Republican legislators abandoned the idea. Ryan opposed Obama's efforts to build significant funding for disaster relief into the budget, a move intended to avoid the kinds of delays forced by Cantor and the Tea Party last year.

Historians: Romney Makes Nixon Look Like An Open Book

Candidates in earlier decades inhabited different political cultures, faced different pressures and different media. In some ways, those differences have made it harder for Romney to get by on a purely superficial appeal to voters. But Ornstein said despite new challenges, Romney stands alone as the least-known quantity to be within grasping distance of the White House in the modern era.

“I think there’s nobody like Romney,” Ornstein. “Romney is like the Michael Phelps of presidential candidates. if you’re looking for gold medals in terms of audacious lying, and adamant refusal to turn over personal information, nobody comes close. I’m sure others would’ve liked to have done it, but the culture in the past was one where lying attracted some level of approbation and shame.”

To Bruce Buchanan, a presidential historian at the University of Texas at Austin, Romney’s drawn attention to himself in a unique way.

“Just the fact of avoiding specifics is not all that unusual,” he said. “The fact of doing it in the context of claims that other analysts conclude don’t add up and not being willing to address those concerns, is a little less common in my memory at least.”

We've got sustained winds of 60 MPH here. They're saying gusts could reach 90, so the odd 100 MPH gust is conceivable - here, at least.

Ugh. Neighbors have a dead tree they haven't taken down yet...leaning into our yard. If it goes, so goes my bedroom and the roof over it. Lots of dead trees around here...some bore beetle or some such. Thankfully, the city took down the two big ones on the side of the house (which were on city property but would have demolished our wood fence, not to mention the entire other side of the house). They blow over easily.

Hubby came home for lunch and was intrigued by all the traffic into the local park, so he followed. Everyone was watching the monster waves on the lake (Huron).

He'd favor an approach that wouldn't work and be a logistical nightmare.

The reason we have a federal disaster agency is to cut through the red tape and bullshit that would be multiple states trying to work together to coordinate a quick relief effort.

One of the minor inconveniences of Sandy will be getting His Majesty to do his business in the yard. He is neither a fan of wind and/or rain. I can't imagine what his reaction will be to a 60 MPH gust.

The U.S. Coast Guard has released dramatic footage of its rescue of HMS Bounty crew Monday.

The footage shows a helicopter flying low, with a Bounty life-raft visible in the water. Crew members can be seen in the water.

The ship sank in storms brought by Hurricane Sandy. Officials say 14 members of the crew have been rescued, but two remain unaccounted for.

One of the minor inconveniences of Sandy will be getting His Majesty to do his business in the yard. He is neither a fan of wind and/or rain. I can't imagine what his reaction will be to a 60 MPH gust.

It is entirely possible he'll hold it until Wednesday.

I know. I have been forcing our guys to go out. (I am more forceful with them than mom or hubby). When I shoo them out, the go, do their biz and come back. I wait at the door so they know they're not going to be left out in the storm.

Our one boy is terrified of thunder. Thankfully, thus far, we're spared. Otherwise, he WILL hold it until Wednesday. His quaking literally makes the room shake. He's so scared, the poor baby.

Not all the freepers are buying it by any means. Nelson111 is especially adamant:

This is one of the most irresponsible things I have ever read on the net. This storm will NOT miss the US. It is right on track. The surge values will be as projected +/-1' unless it speads up or slows down and comes in on a different tide (and tides are huge players). For instance...the surge will be around 6' in Battery. If it comes in on a HIGH tide, as projected now...it means 11' of water. If it comes in on a low tide...it means 8-9'. A 6 hour error in the timing means a LOT.

Enough are, though, to bring the general level of sanity there into serious doubt.

Due to a crane collapse at 157 West 57th Street in Manhattan, all occupants of buildings on West 57th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues must immediately move to the lower floors of your building and make contact with your building safety representative. Romney and FEMA: Would Republican favor local approach?

Once again, you have omitted the same paragraphs from your posted articles. Why is that? This is what Romney said during the R debate.

He added, “Instead of thinking in the federal budget, ‘what we should cut?’ -- We should ask ourselves the opposite question: ‘What should we keep?’ We should take all of what we're doing at the federal level and say, what are the things we're doing that we don't have to do? And those things we've got to stop doing, because we're borrowing $1.6 trillion more this year than we're taking in.”

Debate moderator John King then asked, “Including disaster relief, though?”

Romney’s reply: “We cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we'll all be dead and gone before it's paid off.”

Romney ‘rented’ Mormon church’s exemption to defer taxes for 15 years

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney used a loophole to “rent” the Mormon church’s tax exemption status and defer paying taxes for 15 years, according to a new report.

Tax returns obtained by Bloomberg News through a Freedom of Information Act request indicated that Romney set up a charitable remainder unitrust (CRUT) in June 1996 just before Congress cracked down on the loophole in 1997.

“In this instance, Romney used the tax-exempt status of a charity — the Mormon Church, according to a 2007 filing — to defer taxes for more than 15 years,” Bloomberg’s Jesse Drucker explained. “At the same time he is benefitting, the trust will probably leave the church with less than what current law requires.”

Estates lawyer Jonathan Blattmachr told Bloomberg that Romney’s trust benefits from the Mormon church’s exempt status because charities don’t pay capital gains taxes when they make a profit from the sale of assets.

“The main benefit from a charitable remainder trust is the renting from your favorite charity of its exemption from taxation,” Blattmachr said, adding that the charitable contribution “is just a throwaway” and the church would receive little if any financial benefit from the trust.

“I used to structure them so the value dedicated to charity was as close to zero as possible without being zero,” he pointed out.

The CRUT allows individuals to “defer capital gains taxes on any profit from the sale of the assets, and receive a small upfront charitable deduction and a stream of yearly cash payments,” Drucker wrote. “Like an individual retirement account, the trust allows money to grow tax deferred, while like an annuity it also pays Romney a steady income. After the funder’s death, the trust’s remaining assets go to a designated charity.”

In fact, the amount available to go to the Mormon church has decreased from at least $750,000 in 2001 to $421,203 at the end of 2011 as Romney has collected yearly cash payments from the trust.

Storm brings East Coast economy to a halt

Hurricane Sandy froze commerce, shut down stock exchanges for the first time since 9/11 and idled millions of workers on Monday, laying siege to an economy still trying to get out of first gear.

With the US east coast from North Carolina to Massachusetts threatened by furious winds and a potentially devastating storm surge, businesses closed, refiners shut down operations and insurers girded for a leap in damage claims.

The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq market shut completely on Monday and will stay closed on Tuesday, with operations expected to resume Wednesday, “conditions permitting,” the NYSE added.

It was the first full trading closure since the September 11 attacks closed US equity markets for four days in 2001, and the first full NYSE shutdown due to weather since September 1985, when Hurricane Gloria closed it for a day.

From Ann Romney's Good Housekeeping interview--

GH: What are the steps your husband would take to improve the economy?
AR: Just his election itself is going to instantly turn up the gas and get people more optimistic, but he has five things that are simple for people to understand: One is to get rid of regulation; one is to start using our natural resources; one is to turn to human capital, which is education, and get that working again; and...oh, I'm not sure on the last two! (Laughs)

GH: Well, three is a very good start. A couple of years ago, we created the Green Good Housekeeping Seal as a way of helping consumers figure out what products are truly green versus what are just greenwashing claims. Are green issues something you think about?
AR: Everyone wants clean air and clean water. I mean, of course we all do. And then if you go to a country like China —
GH: Where there is no regulation...

The Romneys love China. And note the use of the term "human capital".

Fun fact: back when Escape from New York was being made, computer rendering was still a very pricey special effect, so the computer screen on the glider showing the wire frame view of New York was faked. It was cheaper to build a rough model of the New York skyline, paint the whole thing black, then outline the buildings with white fluorescent tape and film the whole thing with a camera on a crane than it was to do the effect on an actual computer.
