We're looking at a whole lot of inland flooding.

6 lawhawk  Mon, Oct 29, 2012 6:32:03pm

Flooding continues at record levels across NYC metro from the Battery on to Sandy Hook to Long Beach on Long Island. Flooding in Lower Manhattan is going to be a huge financial hit. Billions of dollars in damage there alone (from subways to tunnels and power grid).

Across the Hudson River in NJ, it's a similar story. Flooding damaged/destroyed hundreds of businesses and tens of thousands of vehicles.

At the moment, Manhattan below 42nd Street without power and many parts underwater.

This is everything from Zone A through Zone C (expected on a Cat 3 storm).

And the damage is going to be repeated up and down the coast from Maryland/Delaware into Mass (they were getting hurricane force winds at Cape Cod and coastal regions).

No subway service through lower Manhattan through end of week (at a minimum). Power outages for millions (and could be a week or more until restoration).

Who knew Revolution was a documentary? /

Lightheartedness aside, there are some truly intense pics coming from NY/NJ.

My heart and best wishes for safety to all involved.

re: #14 The Mountain That Blogs

Could be - MTA was expecting problems, so they may have had equipment ready on standby. Depends on the extent of damage, which is why a week could be a low-ball estimate for return to normal service. Figure on limited service restored within a week - and a reliance on bus service in many parts, especially to lower Manhattan.

re: #13 JamesWI

Yes, it was a very beautiful day today in San Diego.

However, last week we had two days of red flag warnings, as relative humidity dropped down to 8%. Fortunately we didn't have any idiots in the back country start a major fire.

19 lawhawk  Mon, Oct 29, 2012 6:37:48pm

The damage to the MTA systems should push them to reconfigure to modern systems (if you're going to replace, might as well do it right) but the time to do that might take too long to do, so they'll replace with systems in place.

re: #52 Dark_Falcon

The Romney campaign's reply:

Actually it does sound like shut down FEMA, particularly when you look at how the system works right now.

Really simple, every state has assets. There are some federal assets as well. FEMA acts as a coordination system - ensuring everyone's equipment accesses the same frequencies, making sure everyone has the same minimal training, and then working as a single point of communication that everyone knows isn't trying to spend more of state a's money to buffer state B's coffers.

Every State for Itself means each state wanting to declare an emergency has to ask each other state for assets (instead of a single point), and each state asked has to decide - or talk to all the other states to coordinate - which requesting state gets what (if any) assets.

Mob, instead of coordinated action.

He'd end the federal role in disaster relief, that's getting rid of the F in FEMA at the very least. Oh but there's more:

The Washington Post's Greg Sargent adds: "There’s another nugget here worth highlighting, though. In that appearance, Romney also suggested it would be 'even better' to send any and all responsibilities of the federal government 'to the private sector,' disaster response included. So: Romney essentially favored privatizing disaster response."

Of course, no modern Republican would skip an opportunity to let opportunistic middlemen skim and profit off of national tragedy. Makes perfect sense, to parasites.

The Romney campaign's reply:

Yes, he did say he wanted to "shutter" FEMA. The exact quotes:

During a CNN debate at the height of the GOP primary, Mitt Romney was asked, in the context of the Joplin disaster and FEMA's cash crunch, whether the agency should be shuttered so that states can individually take over responsibility for disaster response.

"Absolutely," he said. "Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction. And if you can go even further, and send it back to the private sector, that's even better. Instead of thinking, in the federal budget, what we should cut, we should ask the opposite question, what should we keep?"

"Including disaster relief, though?" debate moderator John King asked Romney.

"We cannot -- we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids," Romney replied. "It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we'll all be dead and gone before it's paid off. It makes no sense at all."

This is where the GOP's "states' rights" agenda meets reality and reality wins.

EXACTLY.

There's a reason we have things like a federal currency and a federal military and federal disaster relief. Someone needs to cut through 50 states of red tape and contradictory laws to get certain things done. The federal government is simply better equipped to coordinate and oversee disaster relief for giant storms like Sandy than expecting the individual states to do it.

I hope they at least have critical branch power for life sustaining equipment. Hospitals have three completely different power distribution systems. Normal utility, emergency, and critical branch, a lot of effort goes into trying to make sure that critical branch never goes down.

Had the Flu 5 years ago, NEVER AGAIN. If I had been in a 3rd world country, I would have died. The only reason I never went to the hospital was because I got on the Anti-Viral meds in time. 5 days of it was enough, any longer I would have been hospitalized.

I'm repeating this again, just in case it didn't soak into D_F's head the first time:

D_F's defense of Mitt in the midst of one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes we've seen in quite a while, just like Mitt's entire campaign, is full of FAIL, for him and all of us.

And you know what? The private sector will be involved (and appropriately so.) The government (state and federal) does not manufacture temporary housing, or blankets, or food, or bottled water or any of the other things you might need in disaster relief. They buy it from private companies. This is reasonable. Having a private company decide who is going to get that bottled water for their child and how much profit they will make on the deal is not reasonable.

The heart of the Mechanism is the Monitoring and Information Centre. It gives countries access to a platform, to a one-stop-shop of civil protection means available amongst the all the participating states. Any country inside or outside the Union affected by a major disaster can make an appeal for assistance through the MIC. It acts as a communication hub at headquarters level between participating states, the affected country and despatched field experts. Our building is away from flood zones, and we don't get much direct wind. The tree next to us even looks like it'll survive. The biggest danger we face, I think, is power going out-- an inconvenience. Nothing to compare to what the people in lower Manhattan and all the places near the shore in the other boroughs are going through.

Infrastructure isn't ready for it - namely tunnels/subways. That's got to be fixed, but it will take significant funds that the MTA doesn't have.

It would mean building storm gates at subway entrances, lifting ventilation grates above flood levels, etc. Some of that simply isn't possible unless they install special equipment to deal with it.

West street is still flooded at the WTC. Waters are receding, but it's a huge mess.

MTA bought a couple of trains that do have major pumps, but I think those aren't going to be sufficient. We're probably going to need to get pumps along the lines of the NOLA flood protection system installed to deal with flooding in places like the tunnels in lower Manhattan at some point - or at least to pump them out more quickly.

They could probably get pumps that normally move concrete in construction projects to help with clearing the tunnels and other locations.

NRC monitoring situation at Oyster Creek nuclear reactor in NJ.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is continuing to monitor impacts from Hurricane Sandy on nuclear power plants in the Northeastern United States, including an Alert declared at the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant in New Jersey. The plant, currently in a regularly scheduled outage, declared the Alert at approximately 8:45 p.m. EDT due to water exceeding certain high water level criteria in the plant’s water intake structure.

An Alert is the second lowest of four NRC action levels. The Alert was preceded by an Unusual Event, declared at approximately 7 p.m. EDT when the water level first reached a minimum high water level criteria. Water level is rising in the intake structure due to a combination of a rising tide, wind direction and storm surge. It is anticipated water levels will begin to abate within the next several hours.

As of 9 p.m. EDT Monday, no plants had to shut down as a result of the storm although several plants were already out of service for regularly scheduled refueling and maintenance outages. All plants remain in a safe condition, with emergency equipment available if needed and NRC inspectors on-site.

I was going to make a comment about adding up the costs of this storm to the existing costs of global warming, when I realized my thinking was wrong. What we've heard is that about 15% of this storm can be attributed to global warming, meaning, on first blush, a total cost of say 100 billion results in a 15 billion global warming cost.

But that isn't accurate because that 15% affect on the storm could account for far more than 15% of the cost. Without the 15% affect the surge may have been far lower, the winds much less and the amount of rain would definitely been less. The increase in damage would not be linear. The application of the costs themselves would not be linear, so the costs of global warming would be a non-linear function of a non-linear function.

Getting the right to understand/believe/accept this would be a non-linear headache inducing project.

Well, he should get some credit if the event raises useful funds. He should also make a six figure donation himself, to kickstart things. Those things done, such an event is OK as long as it avoids attacks. If it gets into attack mode though, it'll hurt Mitt. So he needs to focus on garnering relief monies and promoting himself as someone who is steady in a crisis.

Note: This is my advice as to what Mitt Romney should do. If you think he cannot or will not do so, that is another question. But I am trying to lay out a good strategy for him, and it is one that avoids the kind of attacks others here decry.

Nation’s oldest nuclear power plant put on alert due to storm-driven high waters

WASHINGTON — The nation’s oldest nuclear power plant is on alert after waters from a colossal storm reached high levels.

Oyster Creek in Lacey Township, N.J., was already offline for regular maintenance before Sandy, a superstorm downgraded Monday night from a hurricane, slammed the East Coast.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says an “unusual event” was declared around 7 p.m. when water reached a high level. The situation was upgraded less than two hours later to an “alert,” the second-lowest in a four-tiered warning system.

Federal officials say all nuclear plants are still in safe condition. They say water levels near Oyster Creek, which is along the Atlantic Ocean, will likely recede within a few hours.

Oyster Creek went online in 1969 and provides 9 percent of New Jersey’s electricity.

Too late:

Quote in question:

"We're counting on Ohio," Romney continued. "I know the people of the Atlantic Coast are counting on Ohio and the rest of our states, but I also think the people of the entire nation are counting on Ohio because my guess is, my guess is if Ohio votes me in as President, I'll be the next president of the United States."

Miserable, disgusting excuse of a human.

Have you read "Bury the Chains" by Hochschild? It's about the British Abolitionists and I found it both fascinating and moving. "King Leopold's Ghost" was just so terribly depressing.

No, this is my first by this author. Just checked Audible. Bury the Chains isn't available on audio --yet. :(

This one by Simon Schama and
another book about the same subject by a New Zeland author (whose title and author's names I can't remember) also was excellent--actually better than Shama's.

The author wrote from the Aussie/New Zealand perspective and chronicled a specific former slave from George Washington's household who ended-up being a legend of sorts down under. Her book was much better researched.

268 Gus  Mon, Oct 29, 2012 8:01:07pm

Seriously.

The NRC continues to monitor impacts of Sandy on nuclear power plants in the Northeastern U.S., including an Alert declared at the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant in New Jersey. The plant, currently in a regularly scheduled outage, declared the Alert at approximately 8:45 p.m. EDT due to water exceeding certain high water level criteria in the plant’s water intake structure.

An Alert is the second lowest of four NRC action levels. The Alert was preceded by an Unusual Event, declared at approximately 7 p.m., EDT, when the water first reached a minimum high water level criteria.

All plants remain in a safe condition, with emergency equipment available if needed.

Continues.

It's not only not a linear function, but the costs are probably not technically a "function" anyway.

These type of economic measures are very, very coarse ways of interpreting life, what it means to us, and what we do when we lose it.

Reality - Global warming is rising sea levels.
Life - disasters happen.

The two when crossed give us products that we try to "cost" but we might as well try to put a price on life itself.

Sea levels will continue to rise, and there is indication that we are moving from a decadal average of roughly 3mm/yr to 4mm/yr, and this will increase by the end of the century.

We've already bought that farm. Now we have to figure out how work it.

Because that is so likely. DF, I pity you, I really do, for reasons you cannot even imagine. I too was raised in a household with a family dynamic that, if followed, would have had me bare foot and pregnant, and probably in a relationship that would have been abusive.

Had I respected my father's rules for women, I would not have graduated from college with advanced degrees, and I would not be graduating in May with my PhD- I am not saying all rules should be broken, but it is unwise to blindly follow rules that, at your core, make no sense. I remain the only female college graduate of any kind in my family, despite having 4 sisters because they followed the rules, with less than great outcomes for some of them- just some food for thought for you.

Well, he should get some credit if the event raises useful funds. He should also make a six figure donation himself, to kickstart things. So he needs to focus on garnering relief monies and promoting himself as someone who is steady in a crisis.

Current listen is King Leopold's Ghost. A rather depressing non-fiction history of the rape of the Congo. What I didn't know is that Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, which is based on these events, was the basis of the movie Apocalypse Now. Brando's character was most probably based on a real person who played g-d in the Congo.

When left to their own, people can be totally evil. Doesn't make me feel all that good about the "individual" the current crop of the GOP seems to have deified.

Multiple generations of European men went off to make their fortune and/or sow their wild oats in colonial holdings. While the Congo might have been the most blatantly violent and abusive, and the models for Kurtz the ur-cases of monomania, it was accepted practice that what happens in the colonies stays in the colonies. As much as Heart of Darkness is about the individual capacity for evil when granted power, it's also about the societal system that conspired to not-see the problem.

Assigning the costs in this to global warming would be a tool to use in convincing politicians that it will be less expensive to deal with CO2 output now rather than later.

The difficulty will be to get them to see how a small increase in affect results in a greater cost than a simple minded approach would give.

How would we know the difference, at this point? A good person would not not be able to do something, if he has the means and the ability.

I suppose he could not announce what he's doing, at which point we would sit around and carp that he did nothing.

Tough shit. Hurricane Sandy > Mitt's feelings.

It's not anyone else's fault that he's been running for POTUS for the better part of a decade. Part of being President is acting presidential. Having a series of campaign rallies and photo ops disguised as disaster fundraisers is nothing more than profiting off disaster and death.

Fuck that. He should suck it up and act like a human being for once in his life.

To me its pretty simple.. Warmer oceans and warmer air lead to more extreme weather events because the air can hold more water only to dump later if the warm moist swirling air meets up with a cold front. . Its the Psychrometric chart. The numbers aren't as important as the shape of the curve.

The fact that he's even scheduled this event at all, with Sandy still churning inland, completely validates all of the stereotypes of Mitt that show him as arrogant, aloof, and completely unable to connect or relate with people below his social station.

If he really wanted to help in the Sandy disaster relief without the appearance that he's only doing it to benefit him politically, with a week until Election Day, I would be satisfied if he made announcements, online and in TV ads, for supporters to donate to the Red Cross and other relief organizations.

Nothing more, nothing less...and that would be presidential.

I was just watching Bloomie's last presser. She was great. Gave me a much-needed laugh after a very tense day.

Chicago, the Lieutenant City, will pick up some of the activity that New York isn't going to be able to do for a little while.

Not that easy, I'm afraid. But Chicago will help, and New York will recover faster than you think.

Even though you have less population than Los Angeles, Chicago is still more important on the World Stage than it. Chicago is still the second city of the US.

Alpha++ City New York took a truly vicious hit today, and will need time to lick its wounds.

Alpha+ City Chicago now comes to the plate.

They swapped the Russians out for the Chinese, then realized a lot of the investors were Chinese, so they swapped out the Chinese and made them the North Koreans.

So the North Koreans invade and occupy the United States.

Sorry, but I'm not willing to suspend that much disbelief.

OK. Flying out to Cali tomorrow for more job training and my flight leaves in 8 hours. Good night all! I need to finish packing and try to get a few hours of sleep before heading out.

Be safe, East Coast folks!

As do I. Chicago is where I was born, and despite everything I love it. La is a good city but Chicago's position makes it the transportation hub for the country. Railroads, highways, air travel, even water travel; It all passes through Chi-town.

Just outside of Ann Arbor, we had 40–50 mph winds all night. Living inside our 1870s farmhouse sounded much like living inside a bagpipe. Then we had sleet driven by the wind on our short commute onto campus. Hoping that power stays on. When it goes off, we also lose heat and water.

I don't think any of the back East relative are going to be able to make it out this week.

I'm trying to think of all the ways Sci-Fi writers have chosen to describe the event that triggered the deconstruction of society.

So far,

Flu epidemic --John Ringo, the Last Centurian
Climate Change and failure of Oil as Economic system-John Scalzi, et al -Metatropolis
Overpopulation --various authors/books

I'm totally drawing a blank after that.

Religious hysteria - Nightfall, Isaac Asimov
post-disaster social collapse - The Road, Cormac McCarthy
Sudden reproductive unviability - The Children of Men, PD James
Comet impact - Lucifer's Hammer, Larry Niven
