Ex-FEMA Director Michael Brown: Obama Reacted to Hurricane Sandy Too Quickly

Irony meter pegged
Politics • Views: 35,367

Former FEMA Director Michael Brown, forced out of office after his disgraceful lethargic response to Hurricane Katrina, is now accusing President Obama of responding to Hurricane Sandy too quickly.

“Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job.” - G.W. Bush

“One thing he’s gonna be asked is, why did he jump on [the hurricane] so quickly and go back to D.C. so quickly when in…Benghazi, he went to Las Vegas?” Brown says. “Why was this so quick?… At some point, somebody’s going to ask that question…. This is like the inverse of Benghazi.”

Brown is not the only one making the insinuation that Obama and his administration are responding too quickly to Sandy only for political reasons. He’s joined in his accusations by such prominent right-wing commentators as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and columnist Charles Krauthammer.

Brown's complaining that President Obama is responding too quickly to a natural disaster. Guess Brown would consider waiting a couple of days before having boots on the ground competent?

What an asshat.

President Obama and the governors along the path of Sandy did their jobs. That meant getting out ahead of the storm and making necessary preparations, prepositioning people and equipment, and making the necessary executive orders, emergency declarations, and filings to fulfill legal requirements to get aid in as quickly as possible.

The NYC metro area is an economic engine to the nation. If it takes a huge hit, it's going to hurt everyone else - so getting it back up and running fast is good for everyone especially for those who are here on the ground picking up the pieces.

Ah, but we can't blame a hurricane on anything although that pesky climate change would seem plausibly relevant. We can blame four deaths on brown people who aren't even Americans.

Republican life is pointless without blame.

Well yeah considering what Romney thinks of FEMA. He'd probably give it to a chum. If I recall, Brown's job before running FEMA was running something to do with horse racing.

Krauthammer:

“It’s up to the governors mostly. The White House and the governors release money. That’s about all that they do. And he’s really good at releasing money and pretending it’s not about politics."

Sandy is more of a political problem for the party that wants to get rid of FEMA and other government assistance.

Boykin: Christians Must Vote So Our Soldiers Will Have "A Commander in Chief That Cares About Them"

Recently Jerry Boykin, the Family Research Council's Executive Vice President, appeared on "The John Ankerberg Show" where the two spent most of the interview discussing Iran and Israel, but eventually turning to the upcoming election with Ankerberg asking Boykin why it was important for Christians to vote, which prompted Boykin to reply that he gets "angry and frustrated with Christians who don't vote" because it shows that they don't care about giving members of our military a "Commander in Chief that cares about them:"

#8 Gus,

You've got that exactly right. That's why I hope Romney is not elected on November 6th. The fact that Brown has the balls to open his mouth and say anything about President Obama's superb handling of Hurrican Sandy says it all about Romney and his supporters. Does he think that we've forgotten about his mishandling of Hurricane Katrina and the way he and Bush left people to drown in Louisiana?

They're delusional.

Glenn Beck mocks disaster victims

While the former Fox News and CNN Headline News personality did not find a way to blame President Barack Obama for the hurricane itself, he did make it a point to disparage the people of New York City and to tie the natural disaster to the raid on the U.S. consulate in Libya, in which, he alleges, Navy SEAL personnel called on the president for help, but “he let them die.”

Regarding New York City and the approach of Hurricane Sandy, Beck said, “Eighteen million people live in that general area. Eight million live on that island. Most of whom sit around and watch ‘The Daily Show’ every night and get a good hearty laugh at the host making fun of Glenn Beck for saying ‘food storage.’”

“That’s where they get their news,” he said. “They are wildly unprepared, just waiting for the government to save eight million people.”

He went on to discuss the attack in Benghazi.

“When the president called the Navy SEALs,” he intoned, “they killed Osama bin Laden, but when the Navy SEALs called the president, he let them die.”

51 SanFranciscoZionist  Tue, Oct 30, 2012 12:34:27pm

Mr. Brown, you may not fully understand this, but the American people were sort of freaked out by the results of Katrina for the people of New Orleans and environs. We now all fear meeting the same fate in case of a bad natural disaster. As a result, we actually kind of like it when there is a speedy and effective response to a looming big-ass storm.

I am as pissed as anyone that Americans died in Benghazi, but curiously, it never occurred to me that the appropriate way to honor their memories was to let a whole bunch of other Americans get killed in said big-ass storm. That's because that's STUPID.

Everyone I was in touch with in NYC had food and water stocked, and many had made elaborate emergency preparations. That does not actually turn back the wrath of God, although in the right circumstances, it can help quite a bit.

So let me see if I've got the likes of Beck straight--those in Katrina's path deserved to die because they were poor and black, and those in Sandy's deserved to die because they are Jon Stewart fans, but if Glenn Beck's domicile gets hit by a storm...

OT, but I posted this downstairs regarding the question of election observers. In Massachusetts, at least, it does seem possible that they could interfere with voting. From a document from the Secretary of State's office (doc file):

Any person may challenge a voter for any legal cause. G. L. c. 54, §§ 85, 85A (2002 ed.); 950 C.M.R. 54.04(23). Such reasons are numerous and include that a person: is not who they say they are; does not live where they say they live; is not registered in the correct district; is not qualified to vote by absentee ballot; was not registered to vote by the close of registration; or, has already cast a ballot. It is not sufficient for the challenger to simply say that a voter is not qualified; the challenger must state the specific reason for challenging the right of a person to vote, and that specific reason must be recorded on the ballot. If a person makes a challenge for an unspecified reason, the election worker should thereafter ask the challenger what specific reason they wish to have recorded. If, after being so questioned by the election official, the challenger gives no specific reason, the voter should be permitted to vote, and should not be considered a challenged voter.

Note this says any person and does not contain any language excluding observers, or providing for any sanction against frivolous challenges. And if the observers are there and challenge enough people, they might certainly intimidate voters into not voting, or slow down the process enough so that some voters decide they can't afford to wait. Of course we don't really expect that in Mass., but if any other states have similar laws this kind of thing could happen there.

This last few days I've been thinking about all the disasters I've been involved in. The 89 quake in the Bay area, The 2011 Tornado outbreak in Oklahoma but the worst was the Napa river 100 year flood event. It was terrifying watching everything from the valley racing past. Cars, Houses, debris. A few years later we had another 100 year flood. The city started planning to control the river and determined the only way to do this was to move the Wine train terminal away from the river but it would provide a long term solution.
So you want to know why I despise the GOP and the Drudge report?
When we got 54 million to move the wine train the first headline on Drudge was how Obama gave 54 million to the Napa wine train.

Remember this on election day folks. In their quest to smear the President in all cases, no matter the cost, the Republicans are now blaming him for reacting too quickly to help out fellow Americans in a time of crisis. They are now openly advocating that the right thing to do is to leave people to rot in the wake of a natural disaster, purely because it is the opposite of what Obama is doing.

Part of the thinking behind Chris Christie's praise for Obama is to show that not ALL Republicans are that stupid and soulless, but many of them are still knee-jerking, there's no stopping it at this point.

Michael Brown may not represent the GOP as a whole, but Newt Gingrich most certainly does, given how frequently he appears in GOP media and his recent run for the nomination.

There are, of course, some GOPers that are reasonable about this, Christie among them. But they are the fluff on the fringe of a solid core of scum and villainy.

It's more that he's emblematic of the whole GOP approach to governance, which is that they don't believe government can do any real good, so why bother even trying. Thus, the appointment of a guy whose executive experience was limited to running a horse club to the head of the agency tasked with disaster preparedness in a nation of 300,000,000 that's subject to hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, etc. Thus, Romney's glib answer of rolling FEMA back to the states - helping citizens in dire need is not what the GOP thinks government is for. It's for killing swarthy foreigners.

Furious Typer’s combat strategy is to drown her adversary in a tsunami of angry verbiage. She is absolutely immune to subtlty and ignores all but the barest essentials of any argument. After breifly appraising the gist of her opponent’s counter attack she puts her head down and rapidly fires off long rambling messages replete with grammitical and factual errors. The typical Furious Typer lacks endurance, however, and if the other combatants can weather the initial assault she will quickly exhaust herself and retire from the field.

‘Star Wars’: New feature film set for 2015

“Star Wars: Episode 7″?

It’s happening according to a news release just issued by the Walt Disney Co., which just announced its acquisition of Lucasfilm.

The new film is targeted to open in 2015, with Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy serving as executive producer and George Lucas serving as creative consultant, the release said.

Additional feature films are expected to “continue the ‘Star Wars’ saga and grow the franchise well into the future,” the statement said.

re: #120 Dark_Falcon

No one wants the sequester. I was just trying to highlight its complex genesis. I wasn't trying to pick a fight.

The genesis wasn't complex. The GOP, in an unprecedented fashion, held the US hostage while trying to force cuts in spending during a recession. There was never a time before where a party actually blocked the debt ceiling from being raised. The GOP was fully willing to cause a shutdown in government to force austerity on the US. The sequestration came from a deal given at the insistence of Republicans that a set of cuts be agreed on and made by a bipartisan committee or automatic sequestration-- cuts-- would occur, because the GOP was demanding cuts in the first place.

Do not try to pull the bullshit that the sequestration is the Democrats' 'fault' because they actually did the responsible thing, played politics, gave in to the GOP demands for austerity because they recognized the GOP was actually serious in its suicide dive and decided not to play chicken with the US economy for political advantage.

That is all on the GOP. The sequestration, the hostage-taking negotiation, that is entirely on the GOP.

129 Charles Johnson  Tue, Oct 30, 2012 1:41:03pm

The argument in that Politifact piece can be turned right around, to illustrate its absurdity.

Suppose Romney accused President Obama of trying to cut FEMA's budget. After carefully nit-picking over the record, Politifact would conclude that because Obama only brought up the sequester as a bargaining chip and never intended to actually promote it, and then explicitly opposed cutting FEMA in the sequester, Romney's claim is "Mostly False."

Everybody's false! And everything you know is wrong.

But you're wrong, because Brown's comments perfectly encapsulate what is now the dominant GOP position: Anything that can be conceived to be used against President Obama, whether it's true or not, whether it makes sense or not, will be done or said.

Brown might have been considered a pariah after his incompetent leadership of FEMA before, during and after Katrina, but people like him typify what a Romney administration would be staffed with...a scary thought indeed, among others.

Supreme Court Rejects Personhood Appeal In Oklahoma

By rejecting the appeal, the justices left in place a lower court’s decision that found a personhood measure in Oklahoma would violate the Constitution.

Only four of the nine justices have to agree for the court to take a case, so Monday’s rejection could be a sign that the court’s four conservative justices aren’t interested in wading into personhood, a concept that has divided opponents of abortion rights. [...]

The justices do not explain their decisions to accept or deny cases, and did not offer an explanation for declining to hear the personhood suit.

is nearly impossible to deliver donated canned goods and food brought in from outside the disaster region? It’s a Small Galaxy After All by Jonah Goldberg

Word has just come out that Disney is buying LucasFilm for just over $4 billion and that it intends to make new Star Wars movies, ultimately a new one every two to three years.

I will let that news sink in for those of you hearing this for the first time.

Okay, I’m just thinking out loud here.

My first reaction was horror. I joked on twitter about “Herbie the Love Bug as R2D2″ and “Lord Vader, we have received reports that the Apple Dumpling Gang is on the ice planet Hoth.”

But then I thought, “Who cares?” it’s not like Disney could do more to sully the franchise than Lucas already has. I mean, so what if Justin Timberlake plays Luke Skywalker and Johnny Depp plays C3P0? And what’s the big deal if Jar-Jar Binks gets his own sitcom on ABC? And of course, the Star Wars Christmas special with Yoda delivering presents to all the good boys and girls. After such innovations, I like to imagine George Lucas saying to the execs at Disney “we had a deal.” And they respond “Pray we don’t alter it further.”

First of all, please quote something from Clinton that's as dishonorable as calling Obama "grossly incompetent".

Second, Obama is the leader of the country during a moment of crisis. Romney is not. It is unequal footing, but Obama earned that footing by being elected president and continues to earn it by doing an excellent job during this crisis. Undermining the president in this moment, rather than simply selling the positive aspects of Romney, is not honorable.

Matt Staver pledges to keep pushing Personhood, even though the Supreme Court just let it die

Even though the Supreme Court hasn't accepted the appeal, efforts to approve a personhood amendment in Oklahoma will not end.

The Oklahoma Supreme Court last spring halted the personhood petition drive to let voters decide whether to define a person as any human being from the beginning of biological development until natural death (see earlier story). This week, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case.

Staver, Mat (Liberty Counsel)But Liberty Counsel founder Mat Staver tells OneNewsNow this is not the end of the line for the personhood drive in Oklahoma.

"We may consider one of two, or both options: One is to initiate a separate action in court regarding this matter, or two, ask the legislature to change the statute so that the Supreme Court does not have the option to interfere with the initiative process," Staver explains.

In his interview with Fox News’ Chris Wallace, former President Bill Clinton noted that the political right, which now accuses him of not doing enough to stem the al Qaeda terrorist threat, criticized his 1998 missile strikes in Afghanistan as “wag the dog.” Clinton said:

"The people on my political right who say I didn’t do enough spent the whole time I was president saying, Why is he so obsessed with bin Laden? That was wag the dog when he tried to kill him."

Well, just managed to get off the block and drive around Fair Lawn, Ridgewood, Paramus, and Glen Rock.

Our block got off lucky. The Fair Lawn post office and apartments near us weren't so lucky. Both have trees blocking access with a tree branch hung up in power/cable/phone lines - the only thing keeping it from coming down. Tree leaning against apartments.

Majestic tree lined streets now have multiple trees down throughout Glen Rock. Major streets are mostly passable, but secondary roads aren't so lucky. Even some major streets, like Maple Ave (a NJ Transit bus route) has trees and power lines down.

Paramus has numerous power outages, but Garden State Plaza is open. The parking lot is being used as a staging area, and mutual assist folks from Florida are encamped there as well. We're going to need all that kind of help and then some.

With so many trees leaning or entangled in power lines, we could still lose power despite having it through the storm.

All in all, it's an eye opener for anyone who hasn't been through a hurricane before and should be a reminder to everyone to be prepared for severe weather no matter where you are.

Star Wars is over . Yoda's a spirit , Vader repented and went to heaven , and the evil destroyed . Just like Rocky fought his last fight , Rambo destroyed his last small town , and Konan who might have some more battles , is gonna need alot of makeup, a new hairpiece ,and about a year of working out . Oh and Mad Max ? Gibson is.....fugedaboudit.
