The Shady Past of Mitt Romney’s Chief Strategist

Connections to authoritarian regimes in Albania and Congo
Politics • Views: 35,235

At the New Republic, Penn Bullock has a well-researched article on the disturbing history of Mitt Romney’s chief campaign strategist: Stuart Stevens’ Shady Past Clients, Revealed.

For Romney to brag behind closed doors that his consultants are using tactics honed in foreign elections is peculiar, to say the least. The well-traveled consultants he praised were almost certainly his chief strategist, Stuart Stevens, and Stevens’ longtime sidekick, Russ Schriefer. And before taking charge of Romney’s presidential campaign as its “Karl Rove equivalent,” Stevens helped lift at least two foreign strongmen into power, guiding them to victory in elections rife with irregularities and violence.

Stevens, whom The New Republic profiled in August, says he relishes politics “for the smell of napalm in the morning,” and, by his own admission, his political work is driven by something like a sublimated aggression—it provides “an outlet for my violent tendencies.” An article last month in Politico that portrayed Stevens as the target of vicious sniping within the campaign mentioned in passing that he worked in Albania and the Congo. But it didn’t name the leaders whose campaigns he ran: Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha and Congolese President Joseph Kabila, authoritarian figures who have alarmed human rights groups and, at times, the U.S. State Department.

The depth of Stevens’ involvement in the campaigns of Berisha and Kabila is evident from the LinkedIn profile of Joel Frushone, a former deputy at Stevens’ consulting firm, the Stevens & Schriefer Group. His resume says the firm managed almost every aspect of their election bids, from “high level multimedia campaigns” to “fundraising,” “policy development,” “in-depth opposition research,” and “political strategy, media plans and tactics”—virtually the same services Stevens provides Romney.

Frushone offered only a brief comment. “I know the intimate details of what we did there,” he said, “and it was all above board.”

When short of conclusive information about the character of a person, look at those with whom he chooses to surround himself.

Also, too: ick. Double ick.

Sali Berisha fucked up his first presidency so badly that NATO had to intervene. The elections were totally corrupt. In addition, his government tacitly endorsed the Ponzi schemes that devastated the economy.

This second time around as prime minister, he's refused recounts of the vote, and during the ongoing political crisis his special forces shot four protesters dead. he bizarrely claimed they were part of a coup against him, for which there is no evidence, and he's interfered several times in the court case against them, damaging separation of powers greatly.

He's kind of an asshole.

Behind every great fortune is at least one great crime. I guess birds of a feather and all that. I don't know about you all,but in my life,I have to go really far out of my way to find criminals. Unless you call people who get traffic tickets or have mortgages that are a little behind big time criminals.

The Congolese government isn't a brutal dictatorship. It's a highly corrupt place with the leaders getting rich from mining deals with shady types, and there's human rights abuses aplenty, but it's more a totally corrupt place and less a brutal dictatorship.

It's really sadly funny that the first impact of capitalism on Albania was shitloads of Ponzi schemes, endorsed by the government.

The common factor between the two candidates that Romney's strategist advised was that they were corrupt and the elections they were involved in were also corrupt.

I'd say I'm shocked but nothing about Romney really surprises me that much anymore.

Mike Huckabee: Vote Against Equality And Choice Or You’ll Go To Hell

HUCKABEE: Many issues are at stake, but some issues are not negotiable: The right to life from conception to natural death. Marriage should be reinforced, not redefined. It is an egregious violation of our cherished principle of religious liberty for the government to force the Church to buy the kind of insurance that leads to the taking of innocent human life.

Your vote will affect the future and be recorded in eternity. Will you vote the values that will stand the test of fire? This is Mike Huckabee asking you to join me November 6th and vote based on values that will stand the test of fire.

Dark, your candidate invites Corsi to cover him in the press, your candidate has birther supreme Donald Trump as a fundraiser, your candidate has this adviser. It's natural to want to deflect, but you owe it to yourself to honestly acknowledge these things. You can choose to support Romney despite this baggage of racism and corruption, but make the choice with your eyes open and acknowledging the flaws. I respect your right to make a choice, even one I think is wrong, I do not respect your attempts to mischaracterize the choice.

DF I have loads of respect for the side of you that really wants to be honorable. I just wish that you'd take some of this need to have your team be one up on the other and use that energy to clean up your own party. I say this to every Republican who rails on and on about how awful and terrible Democrats are. Clean your own back yard up first, then we can chat about how awful my side of the fence is.

There are simply no "far left" people in power in this country. Obama himself is really center right old school conservative. There's nothing he's done on par with anything I'd call radical/leftist. It's something the right made up to freak people out with.

And if you ever want to look at someone who was a true liberal, not a crazy person,I'd ask you to go read Paul Wellstone's Conscience of a Liberal. It's not a long book, and you might gain some understanding of what the word Liberal or the word Progressive actually means and how that looks governing wise. Because really,at the end of the day, this is about how we choose our government to work for us,or not.

Oklahoma really is the land of wanna-be theocrats. A non-trivial portion of their state legislature and candidates for such want Biblical creationism taught in schools.

That's not evolution + creationism in the curriculum, it's just creationism and explicitly no evolution.

And when private schools form to get around the secularization of public schools, who do the local get to show up and celebrate with them? None other than Ken Ham:

WCA holds grand opening

The Woodward Christian Academy held its grand opening Oct 29, at which several guest speakers offered words of encouragement to the school, students, and parents.

"Praise God for an establishment like this who'll help raise children up in a Christian manner," said guest speaker Ken Ham, president of Answers in Genesis and the Creation Museum, which both seek to defend creationism. "I see this as a place to capture the hearts and minds of children for the Lord Jesus Christ."

[...]

"I've dreamed of a day when the WCA would have a building of their own," Dirks said.

He was referencing how the school has struggled to find a permanent facility in which to teach, having been hosted by a number of churches since the school began in 1982.

Mayor Roscoe Hill also attended the ceremony.

"Things just seem to be happening for Northwest Oklahoma, and we're truly excited about the opening of the WCA," Hill said.

To mark the occasion, the mayor issued a proclamation declaring Oct. 29 as Woodward Christian Academy day, and the rest of the week as WCA week.

After the dedication speeches, members of the WCA board joined representatives from the Woodward Chamber of Commerce for a ribbon cutting ceremony in the school's new gymnasium. The public was then allowed to tour the school and even enjoy some of the facilities, including the rock wall and racquetball court.

A great deal of the push towards vouchers for private schools, at least in portions of this nation, is so that fundamentalists can escape modernity. I expect in some states legislators will be in a full court press this fall to expand such efforts.

Romney, GOP suddenly plunging onto Democratic turf

Mitt Romney is suddenly plunging into traditionally Democratic-leaning Minnesota and Pennsylvania, and his GOP allies are trying to put Michigan into play. It's forcing President Barack Obama to defend his own turf — he's pouring money into television ads in the states and dispatching top backers — in the campaign's final week.

The question is: Why this Republican move?

Yes, good question (but so is the quirky thing Disney Corp. did to Lucasfilm).

I suspect it is a drain-the-blood move, in order to force the Obama campaign to spend precious dollars outside of hot swing states like Colorado.

If one has enough money one can almost do anything.

Are the media outlets actually calling him out?

It's been on the front page of Yahoo (and/or the front page of their politics section) for the past three days. It's been on most of the major TV networks and their websites, and Ohio's newspapers have called him out for it as well (including the Cleveland Plain Dealer, which is the biggest paper in the state, and Toledo's paper, where this ad is supposedly directed).

re: #55 recusancy

Are the media outlets actually calling him out?

The Des Moines Register, in (supposedly) toss up state Iowa, has a new Gannett article out:

Election 2012 Fact check: Mitt Romney and Jeep

Question: Is bailed-out Chrysler outsourcing jobs in Ohio to China?

Answer: Mitt Romney first told a crowd in Ohio on Thursday that Chrysler was shifting the production of Jeeps to China. Then he aired an ad claiming that President Obama "sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China." (The clear impression in the ad is that American jobs will be lost.)

Neither is true.

[...]

At least in this instance yes, the "media" is point out that Romney is lying.

73 JamesWI  Tue, Oct 30, 2012 4:03:36pm

I mean, I get that Romney is desperate in Ohio, but there are so many other things he could have attacked on where the media would have remained silent.

Shit, I know he got smacked down by Candy Crowley on Benghazi, but the rest of the media seemed to rush to Mitt's defense there. If he spouted more bullshit on Libya, I doubt the press would say anything.

And Darth's example of that bullshit welfare ad. The fact-checkers hate it, but the rest of the media kept their mouths shut when he ran with that earlier.

Franklin Graham: This Election Will Determine Whether 'We Are Ripe for God's Judgment'

This is a crucial hour for our nation. Above all, this is a time for deep, intercessory prayer on behalf of our great country, which is in grave danger unless we repent of our sins and turn back to the God of our fathers. The Bible says, “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way” (1 Tim. 2:1–2).

When America’s leaders actively promote and legislate immorality, restrict the religious freedoms that our country was founded on, and are openly hostile to men and women of faith, then I believe we are ripe for God’s judgment.

So pray and then vote on Nov. 6, asking God for His mercy and grace upon our land. There’s still time to turn from our wicked ways so that He might spare us from His wrath against sin.

Maybe we should whip our selves in penance and indulge in some trepanation to placate the man in the sky as well, you primitive screwhead.

Oh, and I think Christie's comments will help the Prez. A lot.

I think his storm response overall is going to help. Christie's accolades will give him a boost, but the contrast between Obama's resolve and Mitt's desperate attempt to make a campaign rally look like something it wasn't is also going to boost Obama.

I expect Romney's campaign to go totally over the top in this last week. And I expect them, in the end, to be as incompetent as they were in the beginning.

Massive miscalculation, between now and Tuesday. They will mis-step, and it will cost them.

Christie's struck the right chord for NJers. Putting them first over the political crap. Doing what must be done. Acting the part of governor and cutting through the usual stuff. Working with the President. Daresay, he's even sounding bipartisan in the process.

It is interesting to see the style differences between Christie, Cuomo, Bloomberg and Malloy (Gov. of CT). Each has a slightly different take on doing the pressers. Christie's the most blunt and direct. Bloomberg's the patrician of the bunch. Cuomo can be in turns blunt and direct, but isn't nearly patrician and condescending as Bloomberg can come across. Malloy has done well and has a similar style to Cuomo.

NJ Transit:

Rail service will remain suspended until further notice. There is currently no estimated time for resumption of service.
Rail customers are advised to seek alternate transportation because of significant storm damage.
Crews continue to inspect the rail infrastructure to get a full assessment of damage:
NJ TRANSIT’s Rail Operations Center—the central nervous system of the railroad—is engulfed in water, which has damaged backup power supply systems, the emergency generator, and the computer system that controls the movement of trains and power supply
There are numerous downed trees across the rail system, which have caused damage to overhead wires and signal wires.
There are rail washouts across the system, including on the North Jersey Coast Line and Atlantic City Rail Line
Several rail stations are flooded, including Hoboken Terminal.
Morgan Drawbridge on the North Jersey Coast Line in South Amboy sustained damage from boats and a trailer that collided into the bridge.

Until they get the rail operations center clear, they wont be able to move trains anywhere in the system; that may take longer than clearing lines of trees or fixing overhead lines.

For some comparison, when the Port Jervis line got washed out in Irene, it was a 2-3 month period until service resumed. River Line required several months of limited schedule until they were able to fix washout/landslide damaged track. NJ Coast and AC lines may not see service restored for some time below the damaged areas. I'd expect those areas to get bus service in the interim once that gets underway.

We had some downed trees around us (one in our back yard, but nowhere near the house) and some blocked roads, and some people lost power, but we emerged unscathed. The worst we had to endure during the storm itself was some dimming of the lights. It doesn't hurt that at our end of town all the utilities run underground. Hasn't Romney already done enough things to live up to that description? :/ As for the story, if you read the entire article, they've added the following rather...interesting update:

Romney’s campaign told reporters that a Red Cross warehouse in New Jersey was accepting the donation, and distributed a statement they attributed to the Red Cross.

“The American Red Cross appreciates the support from the Romney campaign and is working with the campaign to process this donation of supplies,” the statement read. “We are grateful that both the Obama and Romney campaigns have also encouraged the public to send financial donations to the Red Cross. We encourage individuals who want to help to consider making a financial donation or making an appointment to give blood.”

If you read between the lines, it sounds like a thoroughly tactful version of "Thanks for violating our guidelines and inconveniencing us, but we don't want the supplies to go to waste so we'll deal with it. The rest of you, please give us what we actually ask for. Kthxbai."

This one was beyond horrible, something straight out of a movie:

She just wanted pictures. In Richmond Hill, Queens, a power line the length of a block on 105th Avenue between 134th and 135th Streets snapped and crumpled to the ground. The frayed end of the line began sparking wildly.

Around 8 on Monday night, a 23-year-old woman who lived at the end of the block came out to her driveway clutching a camera.

Her name was Lauren Abraham, and she went by Lola. She was a makeup artist who worked for several professional agencies. She maintained a makeup studio in the basement of the house, which her parents owned. The third floor was vacant, and so she used it as a makeshift photography studio for shots to advertise her makeup skills.

She was attending beauty school, but had also been studying at Lehman College to become a social studies teacher.

Elpidio Nunez, a close friend for 10 years, said she was passionate about making her friends look gorgeous before a night out at the clubs.

“She was a beautiful girl, very carefree, she was never depressed,” Mr. Nunez said. “I had never seen her cry.”

Tamica Penn, 22, her best friend, said, “If you ever needed to talk, she would be there.”

The two had spoken at 7 p.m., an hour before she went outside to take her pictures of the downed power line.

The line was still sparking as Ms. Abraham walked down the driveway and into the rain-drenched street. She came into contact with one end of the snapped wire.

She caught fire.

A half-dozen or so witnesses watched in utter horror. They said her body burned for about a half-hour before the police and firefighters arrived.

I first came across Heir to the Empire at a bookstore in Lincolnwood Town Center mall in Lincolnwood, IL. That was in paperback form in the spring of 1992. My dad bought the book for me (I was 14 at the time) and a few couple weeks later I found Dark Force Rising and bought that in hardcover. Then having read the first two books in the series I had to wait a full year before the third came out. I still have all three of them.
