As Mitt Romney Spreads Lies That Hurt Their Business, Chrysler and GM Call Him Out for Dishonesty

He’ll walk over anyone and anything to lie his way into the White House
Politics • Views: 40,829

It’s really not surprising that spokespeople for both General Motors and Chrysler have now denounced Mitt Romney’s shockingly blatant lies about their companies. In his zeal to smear President Obama in any way possible, Romney is actually willing to spread false claims that could seriously damage the auto industry; he’s put them in a position where they have to call him out to preserve their own reputations: Romney Camp: Pay No Attention to the Auto Companies Calling Us Liars.

A Romney ad running in Ohio says Obama “took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy and sold Chrysler to Italians, who are going to build Jeeps in China.” …

Noting that Chrysler production plans for Jeep had entered the public debate, Marchionne said, “I feel obliged to unambiguously restate our position: Jeep production will not be moved from the United States to China.

“Jeep is one of our truly global brands with uniquely American roots. This will never change. So much so that we committed that the iconic Wrangler nameplate, currently produced in our Toledo, Ohio plant, will never see full production outside the United States,” he continued.

“Jeep assembly lines will remain in operation in the United States and will constitute the backbone of the brand,” Marchionne said. “It is inaccurate to suggest anything different.”

[…]

GM’s spokesman Greg Martin assailed the ads on Tuesday, telling the Detroit Free Press that their facts come from a ‘parallel universe.’

‘No amount of campaign politics at its cynical worst will diminish our record of creating jobs in the U.S. and repatriating profits back to this country,’ Martin said.

Another day, another pathetic lie by the Romney campaign. Props to Chrysler and GM calling him out because he deserves it big time.

I'm waiting for the 11th hour over-reach that will send the Romney campaign into a death spiral they can't pull out of.

This one might be it. Or the subsequent doubling down, which you know is coming. They just can't help themselves.

Which was just what Mitt wanted to do so Obama shouldn't get credit for saving the auto industry as he just did what Mitt wanted but Obama bankrupted the auto industry so shut up that's why

What's really awful to me, is that he decided to pick on Jeep. Jeep is the last surviving marque of American Motors. It is the legacy of his father's business. This, in my opinion, is stabbing his Dad in the back. It's low.

I was never going to vote for him, so there's no way this anything more than a nail in the coffin, but it makes me mad. I'm a Jeep owner. My Wrangler is the most awesome vehicle I've ever owned or driven. I love Jeeps, so screw you, mittens. I also know that I'm one of the more liberal Wrangler owners out there. Jeep guys tend to skew pretty conservative and would normally be a natural part of his base. Same goes for a lot of Chevy guys. Way to connect with the base.

A Romney ad running in Ohio says Obama “took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy and sold Chrysler to Italians, who are going to build Jeeps in China.” …

And exactly why did Chrysler and GM have to go through bankruptcy proceedings?

Oh yeah, that's right.

Because Senate Republicans blocked the bailout bill that would have prevented the major automakers from having to file bankruptcy.

[Link: www.nytimes.com...]

WASHINGTON — The Senate on Thursday night abandoned efforts to fashion a government rescue of the American automobile industry, as Senate Republicans refused to support a bill endorsed by the White House and Congressional Democrats.

The failure to reach agreement on Capitol Hill raised a specter of financial collapse for General Motors and Chrysler, which some experts say may not be able to survive until the end of the year.

Remember, this bill passed the House of Representatives, and was only blocked because it didn't reach a 60-vote supermajority.

Addendum:
It should be noted that this bailout bill was dated December 2008, and the President at the time was George W. Bush. So, President Obama had NOTHING AT ALL to do with the bailout, and was handed two failing automobile companies on Day One of his administration. His choices were pretty limited by the time he took the oath of office, and still was able to fashion a deal that saved the US auto industry.

21 Gus  Wed, Oct 31, 2012 11:35:55am
Since 2001, the IPCC, which is this international panel that looks at all the scientific literature, has a higher level of confidence of the long-term temperature trend, and they have a higher level of confidence that there is a significant human contribution to that. So that has strengthened.

We also have much better data on observed impacts, such as ice melt on land masses that can lead to sea level rise. That is occurring faster than we thought in 2001. There's then still a lot of work underway about sort of long-term projected impacts, but that is also giving us a sense of what some of those could look like. So this is a step. We've taken a step forward from 2001. We have more information, and we're acting on that information.

Red Cross on donations,

The American Red Cross does not accept or solicit small quantities of individual donations of items for emergency relief purposes. Items such as collections of food, used clothing, and shoes often must be cleaned, sorted, and repackaged which impedes the valuable resources of money, time, and personnel that are needed for other aspects of our relief operation.

The average voter (if there is one) works long hours, takes care of a family, and if given a few hours of R&R watches a good movie or football. In between all of that, the voter gets snippets of news programs to keep informed. It's the media, like CNN that is so invested in profits and advertising, that is failing to do its job of keeping those voters informed with real and honest news.

Idiots are always going to be idiots falling for every grifter and charlatan that comes down the block, i.e. today's GOP. If the media was honest in pointing those grifers and charlatans out, this election would be over without having to count a fraction of the votes for the blow-out.

NYU loses years of scientific research and thousands of mice to Hurricane Sandy

The Daily News has just learned that years of scientific research -- and thousands of mice -- at New York University Hospital's Smilow building on E. 32nd St. have been lost.

Most of the power that drives the research laboratories in that building next to the FDR Drive, including emergency power, was lost at 8:30 p.m. Monday. Many precious reagents -- special enzymes, antibodies, DNA strands -- generated by scientists and stored at -80 degrees and -20 degrees were likely destroyed, a researcher tells the Daily News.

Scientists are in a desperate frenzy to save what they can and transfer what can be moved to other areas of the hospital. In one case, scientists were rolling a big freezer -- the size of a big refrigerator -- to an area of the hospital with emergency power, the source told the News.

Even more alarming, thousands of mice that are used by scientists for cancer research and other experiments, drowned during a flood. It is unclear how the mice died, but the source told the News that many of these mice are genetically modified for certain research and took years to produce. It will likely set back several scientists' work by years, the source said.

New National Journal Poll: O-50 R-45

Overall, the survey found Obama leading Romney among likely voters by 50 percent to 45 percent, after the two tied at 47 percent each in a late-September Congressional Connection Poll. Conversely, the poll recorded a slight shift toward the GOP in House races. Now, 47 percent of likely voters say they would prefer that Republicans maintain their House majority, while 44 percent want Democrats to take over; Democrats held a 45 percent to 43 percent advantage in late September. Voters, by a solid 50 percent to 40 percent margin, now say they would prefer a Democratic Senate; that’s up from a 47 percent to 42 percent advantage for Democrats in September.

I think Arizona will ultimately go to Romney but I do think Obama will perform well there and perhaps set the wheels in motion to make Arizona a swing state. Swing states come and go. My own state of Virginia was a strong Republican state on the presidential level for many years but changing demographics changed that. The same will happen with Arizona next election IMO and it wouldn't shock me if Texas became more competitive eventually too.

Todd Akin Sought to Narrow the Definition of Child Abuse

Back in May of 1991, the Missouri House debated a bill to “outlaw rape and sexual abuse in marriage.” “Rape is rape,” said Rep. Jo Ann Karll shortly before the bill was overwhelmingly passed. “Missouri is finally moving into the 20th century,” said Colleen Coble, executive director of the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

But not everyone was celebrating. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on 5/1/91 that Akin voted for the bill but “questioned whether a marital rape law might be misused ‘in a real messy divorce as a tool and a legal weapon to beat up on the husband.’”

Just about any law can be abused, and lawmakers must always be cognizant of this. But Akin seems to be preoccupied with the potential for abuse of the law whenever it relates to the government preventing abuse in the household.

Akin and his supporters believe that the husband is head of the household, and they’re loathe to regulate what he can and cannot do to his wife and children. In fact, prominent Akin supporter Phyllis Schlafly denies the very possibility of marital rape: “By getting married, the woman has consented to sex, and I don't think you can call it rape.”

And so in March of 1992, Akin fought for a narrower definition of child abuse. The Missouri House was considering a bill to create a “statewide child abuse review board” and tighten the standard for proving child abuse from “reason to suspect” to “credible evidence.”

The bill’s sponsor said the definition change was necessary to ensure that “all cases of child abuse can be covered.” Akin, however, was suspicious. He argued that the bill “needed a more restrictive definition of abuse” because of the potential for abuse of the child abuse law. The Post-Dispatch reported on 3/5/92:

Akin said he was concerned that ‘the department could come into your home and if your kid had just fallen off his bike and skinned his knee…take your kid away.’ Akin also said that with a loose definition of abuse, neighbors might use child-abuse reports ‘as a tool to harass, a way to get even with’ someone they dislike.

This is how Akin’s mind works. You need to worry about vengeful soon-to-be ex-wives claiming rape to get back at their husbands. You need to make sure that non-forcibly raped women aren’t getting government-funded medical care. And you can’t let neighbors harass one another by falsely claiming child abuse to the overbearing nanny state enforcers who will take kids away for having a scraped knee.

I think Obama will win the popular vote by 1-2% and have around 300 EC votes. It will be closer than 2008 obviously but it won't be 2000 redux. Obama also seems to be making Florida gradually more competitive again as we get closer. I'm no statistician though.

I think you're pretty much spot on, it will be a closer race than '08, such that the GOP will be quick to declare that Obama has no "mandate." But if he wins and the Dems make gains, then it really changes the dynamics of the next 4 years.

It is fine to give to food banks KT, in fact it is great. But that is not what the hurricane victims need at this moment in time. The Red-cross is best equipped to know what is needed for a natural disaster.

That said, I am sure all that food will be appreciated somewhere.

Watch Texas in 2014. I'm expecting Castro (San Antonio's mayor) to run for governor. If that happens it will energize the lagging hispanic voter pool. That in turn would be a major paradigm change. (2016, a Blue Texas. How much money you gonna spend trying to persuade voters there?)

re: #59 allegro

The average voter (if there is one) works long hours, takes care of a family, and if given a few hours of R&R watches a good movie or football. In between all of that, the voter gets snippets of news programs to keep informed. It's the media, like CNN that is so invested in profits and advertising, that is failing to do its job of keeping those voters informed with real and honest news.

Idiots are always going to be idiots falling for every grifter and charlatan that comes down the block, i.e. today's GOP. If the media was honest in pointing those grifers and charlatans out, this election would be over without having to count a fraction of the votes for the blow-out.

I know full well how hard it is out there. The problem is that I know people who, when asked, without hesitation say they will vote for the guy who saved millions of jobs, cut taxes twice, took out some major terrorists, and even expanded gun rights.

When you tell them that person is Obama, they look at you like you are nuts and say they're voting for Romney because we need a change.

You know, the guy whose party fucked up the economy, and then threw every roadblock possible at Obama, because they'd rather destroy our financial system than allow Obama the tiniest credit for saving it.

Blaming the media is indeed part of the problem. That doesn't excuse the pathetic short term memory of the oh-so-important "independent" voter. To vote in the party that caused this mess is fucking stupid, but unfortunately, desperate people do stupid things at times.

Indeed, it's now actually going to cost the Red Cross money that would be going to fulfilling other basic needs of survivors to sort through all the food that the Romney campaign dumped on their doorstep, to distribute it to those in need, and to preserve what it can't use immediately.

Willard could have taken the money wasted on that food and had a big cardboard check made instead.

Romney’s ‘Plan’ To Help The Auto Industry: Massive Corporate Tax Breaks

Writing on Romney’s campaign web site, ex-Chrysler chairman and Romney endorser Lee Iacocca has now laid out Romney’s plan to help the auto industry: it’s a massive corporate tax break that will make it easier for businesses to offshore their profits.

When Mitt Romney is president, he will reduce our nation’s corporate tax rate to 25 percent from 35 percent – currently the highest combined tax rate in the industrial world – so that American car companies can compete on a level playing field at home and abroad. He will also stop the extra tax automakers are forced to pay when they want to bring home their profits to reinvest in the United States. President Obama could have done this the day he took office since his party controlled both houses of Congress, but he chose not to. [my emphasis]

I think Obama will win the popular vote by 1-2% and have around 300 EC votes. It will be closer than 2008 obviously but it won't be 2000 redux. Obama also seems to be making Florida gradually more competitive again as we get closer. I'm no statistician though.

Florida places a high premium on hurricane relief; enough that maybe they don't even care it's somebody else's hurricane this time. They don't want the guy who'll send them canned goods.

Religious Right Rabbi Blames Hurricane Sandy on Gays, Marriage Equality

Yesterday, Leiter appeared on Crosstalk, the flagship program of Vic Eliason’s Voice of Christian Youth America, alongside Neil DiCarlo, a candidate for New York State Senate, to discuss New York’s legalization of same-sex marriage.

Leiter asserted that the “the Great Flood in the time of Noah was triggered by the recognition of same-gender marriages,” adding that there are similar “messages in this particular storm for us.” “The Lord will not bring another flood to destroy the entire world but He could punish particular areas with a flood, and if we look at the same-gender marriage recognition movement that’s occurring, that certainly is a message for us to learn,” he said. “We have to learn that the Lord does watch what we do and if we don’t shape up He will deliver divine justice.” Leiter also suggested that God flooded Lower Manhattan because it is “one of the national centers of homosexuality.”

Pastor: Obama's Re-Election will be 'Setting Ourselves up to Get the Divine Judgment we Deserve'

Pastor Joseph Mattera in a commentary for Charisma warns that the re-election of President Obama will compel God to punish America in the form of natural disasters and even terrorist attacks. He warns that Obama’s pro-choice policies that will keep abortion legal will lead to an “increase of natural disasters over the past 10 to 15 years like statewide droughts, wildfires, massive flooding, devastating tornadoes and hurricanes, in addition to terrorist attacks at home and abroad.” Mattera adds that re-electing a President who supports marriage equality for gays and lesbians “would be the ultimate act of snubbing our noses against God and His moral law” and consequently Americans “are setting ourselves up to get the divine judgment we deserve to satisfy the justice of God.” He goes on to accuse Obama of stoking potential race riots and working to impose hate speech laws.

Polls for Romney were terrible today. I wouldn't be surprised to see Silver's odds jump up over 80% (cue wingnut rage)

Meanwhile, Romney's people just had a conference call with press claiming they're going to win Florida by double digits (which is why they've been campaigning in Florida pretty much every day), Colorado is clearly going their way (which is why Mitt and Ann Romney will be campaigning there tomorrow), and that they're in a "good position" to win PA, MI, and MN (which is why their campaign pretty much haven't stepped foot in those states), and that those states are "part of their plan to get to 300 EV" when the only person who seems to think he has a chance of getting 300 is Dick Morris.

Baghdad Bob escaped Iraq and is working for the Romney campaign.

President Barack Obama leads Mitt Romney by 5 points nationally, according to a poll released Wednesday afternoon.

The final United Technologies/National Journal Congressional Connection Poll shows Obama earning the support of 50 percent of likely voters to Romney's 45 percent.

Princeton Survey Research Associates International conducted the poll Oct. 25-28 using live phone interviews with 713 likely voters nationwide. It has a margin of error of 4.4 percentage points.

You're still a step ahead of me. I'm not sure the pumpkins we picked up a couple weeks ago are gonna get carved. We had to bring in all the decorations on Saturday to avoid losing them to Sandy, now nobody has the motivation to put them back out there in the couple hours of dim daylight left, there's no candy been bought, and the pumpkins remain uncarved.

Think this might be the first Halloween in forever where we don't pass out candy.

Beisner: Hurricane Sandy was Sent By God as 'a Matter of Grace'

Today on "Focal Point," Bryan Fischer brought on Dr. Cal Beisner of the Cornwall Alliance to discuss the impact of Hurricane Sandy. Beisner, who received his doctorate in Scottish History, is the Religious Right's favorite climate change "expert" primarily because his entire agenda is rooted in the belief that environmentalism is a religion that is out to destroy Christianity.

Back in 2011, after a massive tornado devastated parts of Missouri and killed more than 300 people, Beisner claimed that it was sent as "a little taste" of God's judgment , which is a claim he reiterated this time around, saying that through Hurricane Sandy, God is alerting mankind that "there is an eternity of suffering ahead" for those who do not repent and is therefore really "a matter of grace." That prompted Fischer to declare that Americans now need to "search our hearts, we need to go before God, we need to fast and pray to see if we can understand why we may be, at this time, the object of God's wrath":

I think the reason is fairly obvious.

We tolerate people like Bryan Fischer.

4-year-old weeps for ‘Bronco Bamma and Mitt Romney’ election to end

A 4-year-old Texas girl is so exhausted by the 2012 presidential election that it moved her to tears on Tuesday.

Elizabeth Evans told KUSA that she had been driving to the grocery store and listening to election coverage on NPR with her daughter, Abigael, when the girl began to cry.

Evans asked her daughter why she was upset.

“Just because I’m tired of Bronco Bamma and Mitt Romney,” the girl replied as a tear rolled down her cheek.

“Aw, that’s why you’re crying?” Evans replied. “It will be over soon, Abby. The election will be over soon.”

Pastor: Mormonism is a cult, but Obama is like Hitler so vote Romney

First Baptist Church of Dallas Senior Pastor Robert Jeffress told religious leaders at WTBN Ninth Annual Pastors Appreciation Lunch on Tuesday that they needed to make politics a part of their sermons, according to The Tampa Tribune.

“I believe the preservation of America depends on pastors,” Jeffress said. “This is no time for God’s men to be passive. It’s time to stand up and push back against all the evil in our country… Tell your people that they have a choice: to cast a vote for righteousness or vote for unrighteousness.”

Jeffress said that pastors should urge church members to vote for candidates who support “biblical values” like opposition to abortion and marriage equality.

“Stay silent, he warned them, and you’re no different than German Lutheran pastors who didn’t speak out against Hitler’s growing influence in the late 1930s. That lack of action led to the Holocaust, he said,” the Tribune‘s Michelle Bearden reported.

In an interview after the event, Jeffress said that he had not explicitly endorsed Romney, but “people can connect the dots. It’s clear which candidate shares our views.”

During the Republican presidential primary, the Texas pastor made news when he told the Values Voter Summit that Gov. Rick Perry was a “a genuine follower of Jesus Christ” and Romney was “not a Christian” because he belong to a cult.

Well - there is a time and place for buried lines - locations with high wind issues, but not areas prone to flooding. Overhead lines make sense in areas prone to flooding, but not wind, especially if you've got tree cover and insuffiicent pruning.

A good and reliable power distribution system incorporates both - and spending to maintain them in good working service.

That hasn't always been the case.

California sets voter registration record

A record number of Californians have registered to vote for the Nov. 6 election, with a new online registration system and growing interest in the tight presidential race helping to create a surge of applications in recent weeks.

As of Wednesday, counties have reported a record 18.14 million people are registered to vote, eclipsing the previous record of 17.33 million registrants, set in February 2009.

The numbers will go up as some counties this week finish counting new registrants, according to Paul Mitchell, vice president of Political Data Inc., which is analyzing the numbers. He predicted the final number will be about 18.4 million registered voters.

Mitchell said a key factor in the surge is the state's decision to allow online voter registration for the Nov. 6 election, which drew more than 1 million applications in the last few months.

Pat Robertson’s Halloween advice: Scary movies will literally ‘haunt you’

In a special segment ahead of Halloween this year, Robertson warned viewers that even though scary movies are “fake,” they are still “demonic” and will definitely “haunt you,” then stressed that committing a sin, like watching one, is actually just like playing Russian Roulette… with your soul.

“You don’t want to open yourself up to demonic influence,” he said, answering a viewer’s question about scary movies on television. “You begin to be entranced by it. You begin to come in to it. The next thing you know, you’re going one step beyond. The devil is very subtle and very sly.”

“You can’t focus in on the evil that’s out there, the sickness of some of the Hollywood writers is just simply appalling. ‘The Night of the Living Dead’? You know, the chainsaw massacre? Horrible stuff, the blood and gore. You don’t want to focus your life on that because it will haunt you.”

In response to another questioner who inquired about the dire seriousness of hellfire and damnation, Robertson appeared to escalate the type of risk he thinks people take when they commit acts against God (like watching horror movies).

“Why would you be playing games?” he asked. “It’s like saying, ‘Six turns of a pistol, I’ve got one bullet in it, I’m gonna keep pointing it at my head and hope it doesn’t go off.’”

Robertson went on to explain that God is like a giant, invisible “supercomputer” somewhere out there in parts unknown, keeping track of every single thought and action. “You better hope and pray you’re in the lord, and the lord’s blood has covered everything you’ve ever done,” he cautioned. “Because everything you’ve ever done is in those books.”

The Most Insanely Violent Cartoon Ever (Is About the Bible)

Everything seems to be going along swimmingly, as far as nailing your racial nemesis goes, and then the pre-marriage celebration comes around. Samson, as Philistine tradition dictates, is given 30 escorts for the next seven days. In the spirit of camaraderie, he proposes that they all play a fun little game: He'll come up with a riddle, and if they solve it before the wedding, they'll each get a new robe. Isn't that neat? That's how you design a good game; the mechanics are simple, everybody is equally involved and the stakes are just low enough to keep everything friendly.

But then those dirty Philistines go and ruin everything. They try to coerce Samson's weak-willed, treacherous woman-beast into giving up the answer to this benign little riddle game. This turns out to be quite easy, actually: They make a few patriotic pleas, a couple of threats and when that doesn't work, they just eye-slave that bitch.

Hey, turnabout is fair play.

After a few days trapped in the Phantom Zone behind the Philistine woman's dead, dead eyes, Samson's escorts return just before the ceremony to solve his riddle.

Man, what a shitty thing to do. Cheaters shouldn't ever prosper. Samson would be totally within his rights to not honor this bet, but then, what kind of lesson would that teach to the kids? He's no welcher, cheating or no. So our hero -- our protagonist, the strong-jawed, noble main character that's been the spearhead of every lovable, wacky shenanigan so far -- honors his part of the bargain. He goes out and he gets those robes ... by murdering 30 completely unrelated, innocent people in an alleyway.

Now, I know this is Biblically accurate, Christians, and you don't want to teach the kids half-truths or falsehoods about something as sacred as the bible, but was there no better way to treat this scenario in a children's cartoon? Couldn't you have cut to narration, or tasteful editing, or hey -- maybe you could have stopped just short of recording the agonizing death screams of innocent men echoing through the empty city streets?

"In the context of the election, I simply said he should have waited," Brown said. "The storm was still forming, people were debating whether it was going to be as bad as expected, or not, and I noted that the president should have let the governors and mayors deal with the storm until it got closer to hitting the coastal areas along the Washington, D.C.-New York City corridor."

Anti-Obama texts traced to conservative activist

The spate of unsolicited anti-Obama text messages that have hit hundreds of cellphones in recent days appears to be the work of conservative activist Jason Flanary and his Virginia-based communications firm, ccAdvertising.

The anonymous texts were sent from email addresses rather than other phones — a loophole in spamming and autodialing laws that the FCC is considering closing.

Neither Flanary, a failed 2011 candidate for Virginia’s state Senate, nor anyone at ccAdvertising immediately returned telephone calls seeking comment on Wednesday. The firm’s website lists clients including Grover Norquist’s powerhouse advocacy group Americans for Tax Reform, as well as Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) and Rep. Kay Granger, (R-Texas). CcAdvertising has also worked with McDonald’s and Burger King, according to the client list.

They included “Obama stole $716 Billion in Medicare. We cant [sic] trust Obama to protect our seniors,” “VP Biden mocks a fallen Navy Seal during memorial. Our military deserves better,” and “Obama believes killing children is a right until the umbilical cord is cut.”

RNC spokesperson can’t name FEMA problems under Obama

Republican National Committee spokesperson Sean Spicer stumbled over his words briefly Wednesday morning when MSNBC host Chris Jansing asked him to name federal disaster relief screw-ups under President Barack Obama.

“I don’t, uh, not that I …” Spicer began to say, before saying an earlier Jansing & Co. guest, USA Today Washington bureau chief Susan Page, brought up “several instances” where the Federal Emergency Management Agency had gotten in the way of relief efforts “in the past,” without naming any specific instances during the Obama administration.

Earlier in the show, Page said FEMA had been “controversial” in past instances when there were “glitches” in its service, giving the botched response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, during Republican George W. Bush’s presidency.

This is the same Brown who, when called to answer why the state of emergency issued by Bush didn't include any LA parishes, when it did for MS and AL, he tried to toss the blame to the Dem governor (Blanco), only for her to reveal to the country that he was lying his ass off by providing a copy of the letter asking specifically for parishes that got blasted by Katrina to be covered.

So to see an administration take a major storm seriously instead of playing catch-up and then trying to blame members of the opposing party for your screw-ups must be absolutely mystifying to the man.

First he has to beat Christie for Governor. Then he can implement recovery act funds Christie refused. That'll make him super-popular. After that, he can run for President - in 2020 - against Todd Palin (unless the Republicans can find someone more qualified and less crazy in their ranks).

PEC struggling back online after this morning's outage.

The "Meta-margin" shows that state polls would have to swing toward Mitt Romney by 2.6% to tie the race. This Meta-Margin differs by about 3.0% from national polls. I regard this as the big current mystery. While we bring PEC back online, I am doing analysis to understand the difference. Swing-state polls were dead-on in 2004 and 2008, suggesting either national-poll methods or non-swing state opinion as the culprits.

The possibilities are either systemic problems with national polling that lead to a heavy Republican lean or epic level white hatred of Obama in large population red states like Georgia and Texas that aren't nearly so present in swing states. Both explanations are possible, both Gallup and Rasmussen's likely voter models and methods have been dissected to find major flaws but that doesn't explain most of the difference. There's been discussion about the cell phone gap and non-spanish language polling skewing numbers, but those should hit swing state and national polls equally. Something, seems to be causing such a significant divergence.

Nate Silver tackled this somewhat today with his blog post, noting that for Obama to lose the PV, based upon what the polls show in the swing states, you'd have to account for it by showing him being seriously down in the "solid" states. And none of the few polls that have been run in those states can account for the discrepancy.

LOL.....flipped over to Fox News for a second, one of their babes was holding up a copy of the new Playboy, talking about how there's a good article on politics in there.

Guy sitting next to her, who looks like a perfect representation of the Republican base (in his late 50s-60s, white, southern accent, weighs at least 300 lbs) asks her..."Is your picture in there?"

Like I said. Perfect representation of the Republican base.

(The woman's smile instantly disappeared and she said coldly "No, my picture is not in there. It's an article.")

No matter how much I love Fallout, I have to call bullshit on one thing from personal experience. The NCR Veteran Rangers would die of dehydration or heat stroke in about an hour or two wearing all that shit out there.

I wore it (what's in my avatar pic) in the middle of the Mojave desert in a costume contest for about an hour and half and I could wring the sweat out of my clothes and fill up a bucket after.

My Pipboy fell apart immediately after the contest as well...

Good news!

Chris Christie has signed an executive order declaring New Jersey Halloween to be on November 5 this year...

Personally, I think Rubio would have been the best. Lots of stupid people would see him on the ticket and say "See, the Republicans must not really be bigots!" And any cut into Obama's advantage with Latinos would be deadly.

The GOP base would have been apoplectic. Choosing Rubio would have been viewed, rightly, as Romney taking a great big steaming shit on the Birthers and their entire line of "reasoning." Choosing Rubio might also maker it harder to pivot on immigration, because that would piss off the base even more. Also, I think it's a mistake to think that a conservative Cuban American from Florida would have that much caché with voters of Mexican / South American descent, especially if he's just viewed as a token, hamstrung by revanchist white sentiment.

The final argument against Rubio is that Romney is fucked if he can't win't Florida on his own and Ohio is actually the keystone for all his paths to victory. Rubio would make Florida a sure thing but might not help him in Ohio at all. Portman would help him in Ohio and would definitely appeal more to Florida seniors than Ryan.

How does that even make sense? I don't recall anything in Genesis about same-sex marriage provoking God into sending the Flood. It was more a general "my children are screwing up again, so it's time to wipe them out and start over." Maybe there are some traditions that didn't make it into Genesis that the rabbi knows, and I don't.

And since when was Lower Manhattan a hotbed of homosexuality? What exactly is going on on the NYSE trading floor?
