Video: Mitt Romney Loses His Cool in an Interview About the Mormon Position on Abortion

Very worked up
Politics • Views: 53,291

Here’s a very revealing video of Mitt Romney totally losing his cool in a radio interview at Iowa’s WHO 1040, when asked to comment on his Mormon faith’s position on abortion and women’s rights. Note that the interviewer, Jan Mickelson, actually seems to be on Romney’s side, but Romney rants at him as if he were an enemy.

UPDATE at 11/1/12 1:42:43 pm

Correction: this video was not recorded recently, but in August of 2007. This doesn’t change its relevance though; the Mormon position on abortion, the subject that got Romney all worked up, is just as much of a sore point today.

Romney is referring to works by Cleon Skousen--JBS enthusiast and anti-federal paranoid, who also inspired Glen Beck.

I don't know what his standing was as a theologian, but his politics skeeve me.

Quoting Skousen with favor I see. No wonder why Glenn Beck's come around on him.

I think it is scary to have a president who believes such rubbish. Could he be tempted to think that a catastrophe in Israel, say a nuclear attack, is the sign of the second coming and all other issues become irrelevant?

Damn, this almost makes me wish I was back at my law school...... Just got an email today talking about a special "class" they're holding in a few weeks:

John Dean, Counsel to President Nixon, will participate in the class, together with Watergate Prosecutor Jill Wine-Banks and Vice President Walter Mondale.

That's my observation of him not just in this interview but in general. You try telling Mitt Romney he's mistaken in what he's saying and he goes ballistic. Anyhow, that's why I can't wait for the tell all book where we get some insight from some disillusioned campaign staffer who will tell us about how he was when the cameras were off. Definitely look forward to hearing about his reaction to the 47% video being leaked.

Fox Business reporter: ‘Mars wobbles’ could be causing climate change

Fox Business host Stuart Varney, who is known for featuring segments to deny the existence of global warming, on Wednesday lashed out at Democrats like New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Rep. Henry Waxman for “already blaming it on climate change.”

“Oxford University, places like the St. Petersburg Atmospheric Observatory, they all say there’s climate change,” stocks editor Elizabeth MacDonald told Varney. “But the problem is, is that there’s no consensus on what’s causing it.”

“Is it solar flares? Is it the Mars wobbles? Is it the Earth’s axis tilting in a different way?” she suggested, ignoring that most climate scientists point to man-made causes like fossil fuels.

Varney, however, doubted there was even a pattern of “more extreme weather events,” pointing out that there were also powerful hurricanes in the 1950s.

Get off my planet.

Romney: Seniors ‘most likely’ won’t get to see doctor if Obama wins

“I happen to believe that the choice you make [on Nov. 6] will have enormous consequence for a senior who’s perhaps needing the care of a specialist,” the Republican candidate explained. “If he or she makes a call to the doctor and if Obamacare is installed and the president’s re-elected, why when making that call, you’re mostly likely going to have the receptionist come back and say, ‘Sorry, we’re not taking in more Medicare patients.’”

After pausing for boos and moans from his supporters, Romney continued: “Because the president is cutting Medicare to pay for Obamacare.”

Limbaugh says Gov. Christie has ‘man love’ for Obama

Republican shock jock Rush Limbaugh said Wednesday that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s praise of President Barack Obama has been so effusive, he might just be going gay.

“Let’s just put it this way: Is it wrong for one man to love another man?” Limbaugh asked during his Wednesday show. “That man-love out there is isolated in the state of New Jersey.”
...
He added that New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who hasn’t been so breathless in his praise of the president, “has also endorsed Romney, by the way.”

Unfortunately for Rush, Bloomberg did not endorse Romney — in fact, the Republican mayor announced his endorsement of Obama on Thursday afternoon, citing the president’s commitment to taking action to counter the worst effects of climate change. He’d previously praised Romney and told reporters he would have voted for the Republican nominee “if the 1994 or 2003 version of Mitt Romney were running for president.”

He was a capitalist therefore he was okay. Pretty much saw that logic when I brought up to some of them a few years ago. Rather scary honestly. A dictator's a dictator. Especially a tyrannical monster like Pinochet. Other point about him is I love how they bring his pension system up but then deride people on the left who point to the success of the welfare state in Scandinavia. For the record, I think that the best approach is somewhere in between the two but that always amused me.

Latter Day Saints believe that the Jews will build the Third Temple and after the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, the Jews will accept Jesus as the Messiah and most Jews will convert to Mormonism. Then, it is believed, the Third Temple will become an LDS Temple and will be one of the two most important LDS Temples along with the New Jerusalem Temple that it is believed will be constructed on the Temple Lot in Independence, Missouri, United States. The Jerusalem Temple will function as the resurrected Jesus Christ's Eastern Hemisphere headquarters, and the New Jerusalem Temple in Independence, Missouri will function as the resurrected Jesus Christ's Western Hemisphere headquarters. Both of these two temples will have thrones for Jesus Christ to sit on during his millennial reign.

Inhofe: Obama 'Has Tried to Destroy Every Institution that Makes America Great'

Today, Sen. James Inhofe stopped by "Focal Point" to give Bryan Fischer his predication about next week's election, saying he wanted it on the record that not only is Mitt Romney was going to win "by a substantial margin," but that Republicans will also win control of the Senate because, even though people don't want to say it, "they realize this president has tried to destroy every institution that makes America great."

"This is still America and they can't get by with that," Inhofe declared, before predicting that Todd Akin would win the Missouri Senate race because his "legitimate rape" gaffe "was a long time ago":

H2 (History Channel 2) had an interesting show on last night about what makes people afraid of the dark. It was really neat. They went to places like Eastern Africa where people still live at night close to how early humans did. They also visited a rural town in England far from the city. It's a provoking question really. I think myself and my two brothers were all afraid of the dark at one point in our lives. And I'm still scared to go in cemeteries at night. My high school was right across the street from one and that always creeped me out.

Experts: NYC sea barrier could have stopped surge

The vast destruction wreaked by the storm surge in New York could have been prevented with a sea barrier of the type that protects major cities in Europe, some scientists and engineers say. The multibillion-dollar price tag of such a project has been a hindrance, but may appear more palatable after the damage from Superstorm Sandy has been tallied.

“The time has come. The city is finally going to have to face this,” said oceanography professor Malcolm J. Bowman at Long Island’s Stony Brook University. He has warned for years of the potential for a catastrophic storm surge in New York and has advocated for a barrier.

Invited by Bowman and his colleague Douglas Hill, two European engineering firms have drawn up proposals for walling most of New York off from the sea, at a price just above $6 billion.

Other outlets put the cost at 2-3 times that much.

Here's my take. If you're going to build it, build it with additional infrastructure - rail/road links. You'd get a direct link from Sandy Hook to Brooklyn, bypassing the most heavily congested areas.

Similarly, you'd get a cross Long Island Sound barrier connecting the East End with Connecticut - opening up new possibilities for evacuations if necessary as well as transportation links. More expensive, but bigger ROI.

Nonpartisan Tax Report Withdrawn After G.O.P. Protest

The Congressional Research Service has withdrawn an economic report that found no correlation between top tax rates and economic growth, a central tenet of conservative economy theory, after Senate Republicans raised concerns about the paper’s findings and wording.

The decision, made in late September against the advice of the agency’s economic team leadership, drew almost no notice at the time. Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York, cited the study a week and a half after it was withdrawn in a speech on tax policy at the National Press Club.

But it could actually draw new attention to the report, which questions the premise that lowering the top marginal tax rate stimulates economic growth and job creation.

“This has hues of a banana republic,” Mr. Schumer said. “They didn’t like a report, and instead of rebutting it, they had them take it down.”

Republicans did not say whether they had asked the research service, a nonpartisan arm of the Library of Congress, to take the report out of circulation, but they were clear that they protested its tone and findings.

One of my soap boxes is how we, as a society and nation, are not stepping back and taking accurate assessments of what it will take, by way of resources and time, to maintain our modernity:

Exasperation builds on Day 3 in storm-stricken NYC

Frustration - and in some cases fear - mounted in New York City on Thursday, three days after Superstorm Sandy. Traffic backed up for miles at bridges, large crowds waited impatiently for buses into Manhattan, and tempers flared in gas lines.

[...]

"We had three guys sitting out in the lobby last night with candlelight, and very threatening folks were passing by in the pitch black," she said. "And everyone's leaving. That makes it worse."

The mounting despair came even as the subways began rolling again after a three-day shutdown. Service was restored to most of the city, but not the most stricken parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, where the tunnels were flooded.

[..,]

NYC, like all conurbations, depends on the importation of large quantities of supplies and energy through a highly complex system for distribution. This complexity itself costs quite a bit, but we are willing to pay because we like the results.

Every politician (almost) loves to talk about spending money on "infrastructure", but the actual construction is slow and often fought every step of the way.

By the second half of this century many major American cities which are the coasts will need to spend large sums of money to rebuild themselves.

But let's all pretend we can ignore that.

U.S. stocks in broad rally after upbeat data

Some buoyant data on consumer confidence and the manufacturing sector gave Wall Street a solid bump higher Thursday after Wednesday’s flat reopening following the Hurricane Sandy shutdown.

The data trumped another mixed bag of earnings and dull forecasts for the coming months from companies like ExxonMobil and Pfizer.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished solidly higher at 13,232.62, a gain of 136.16 points (1.04 percent).

The broad-based S&P 500 rose 15.43 (1.09 percent) to 1,427.59, while the Nasdaq added 42.83 (1.44 percent) at 3,020.06.

“A slew of positive economic reports complemented better-than-expected reads on manufacturing activity out of China to give US equities a much-needed boost today,” Charles Schwab & Co. analysts said.

Well looking at the polls today. The two things I want most to happen are likely to happen. One of course is Obama's re-election and the other is Kaine beating Allen for the Senate here in Virginia. Kaine beating Allen would finally end Allen's career once and for all I would think and hope. Never going to forget or forgive that bastard for the racial bullshit he bulled in 2006. Obviously glad to see the economy is improving too.

Video of Todd Akin’s Extortionist Friend Threatening a Doctor – Months before Akin Contributed to His Campaign

On March 11, 1993, Dr. David Gunn was shot three times in the back and killed outside his Pensacola, Florida clinic by an assassin who stepped out of a group of anti-abortion protesters. Days later, longtime Todd Akin associate Tim Dreste delivered a chilling message to St. Louis-area doctor Yogendra Shah. Dreste stood in front of his clinic with a sign that read “Dr. Shah, are you feeling under the Gunn?” – referring to the slain Florida doctor. We’ve obtained a short video recording of this infamous incident, which you can watch below.

Dreste would later be convicted of extortion on the basis of this incident and others that followed. U.S. District Judge Robert E. Jones ruled in 1999 that Dreste “acted with malice…and with specific intent in threatening plaintiffs.”

Yet Todd Akin donated to Dreste’s long-shot campaign for the state house in October 1993, just months after Dreste threatened Dr. Shah. Very few others did so – Akin’s $200 contribution was Dreste’s 2nd largest individual contribution and made up 9% of his total donations.

Here’s a very revealing video of Mitt Romney totally losing his cool in a radio interview at Iowa’s WHO 1040, when asked to comment on his Mormon faith’s position on abortion and women’s rights.

Actually, this was off the air, which makes it even more disturbing to me. It's kind of like the 47% video, where the real Mitt shows up.

Bradlee Dean Talks About Armed Insurrection After The Election

Caller: We've talked about this before - that it is not our job as citizens to go in and take up arms against the government unless they come in and illegally shoot us up. But, that is not going to happen because first of all as soon as there is martial law land-wide, the United States-wide you know darn good and well that they are gonna wanna come to get all the guns they can get.

Bradlee Dean: Well, they are already [unintelligible].

Caller: When they do that, what are we fight with - rocks?

Bradlee Dean: No, here's the deal; if Obama is re-elected, let me just say it this way - America deserves what it gets.

Caller: Amen, brother.

Required reading:

Survivors deal with these "triggers" every day. Those triggers could be a smell, a street corner, a phrase, the tone of someone's voice, a person who resembles our assailant, or a television show that brings horrific memories flooding back to us. Once we are raped and are lucky enough to survive and continue our lives, we are still haunted. Triggers never stop. We just learn to cope with them and try to live life in spite of them. While television shows and street corners can be avoided, this election cycle has been hard for us to shut out. The recent political conversation on rape has been endless, callous, misogynistic, and loud.

...

I'm asking you to revisit this grappling and to revisit your manner of speech. I'm pleading with you to spend the middle of the night volunteering at a rape crisis center. I'm asking you to see the eyes of a terrified girl who is in shock. I'm asking you to give a blanket and a teddy bear to a young woman who can't bring her clothes home with her because they now have to go to a forensic lab. I'm asking you to help give her the medicine she may have to take because she may have a disease now. I'm asking you to comfort a woman who may have been drugged, who may have been held at gunpoint, at knifepoint, or who may have been tricked into violation. I'm asking you to see the woman's face frightened with tears as she takes a pregnancy test at a hospital waiting to see if she is pregnant from a person who tried to murder her. I'm asking you to talk to a woman who may desperately want a baby from her husband but is terrified she is pregnant from her would-be killer instead. I'm asking you to sit down with sex crimes detectives and witness how overloaded with cases they are. I'm asking you to talk with District Attorneys that won't file charges against the assailant because of fears of losing a case. I'm asking you to talk to women who have had abortions from rape and why they had to do that so they could recover. Or maybe you should talk to women who chose to keep the pregnancy, understand why they needed to do that, and understand why they would never judge someone who couldn't.

Wait. This is the dreaded sex scandal October surprise Drudge was warning us about? Allegations that US Senator Bob Menendez had sex with prostitutes in the Dominican Republic? Really? That's going to be the game changer?

Menendez denies all the allegations; the women wont identify themselves, and that the proof was that they pointed out Menendez from a photo.

Wont change the fact that Menendez is ahead of Kyrillos by a wide margin.

Also, I saw on Twitter that their "lawyer" is an ally of the President/PM (can't remember which) of the DR.....who Menendez has criticized harshly multiple times.

Also, you have the fact that it was the lawyer coming forward with the two prostitutes together....that is - They didn't both come forward individually with their stories.

What it looks like is the lawyer found two prostitutes and paid them to tell the story about the Senator, and Tucker the "journalist" went along with it, because he is a desperate hack who sees his party getting creamed.

Another little server hiccup, and this time I was watching what was going on. Another bottleneck has been found -- loading a user's tags when they post or edit an LGF Page.

I had changed some things in that code, but some of you have so many tags now that it was still a problem.

So the solution - instead of loading all your tags, it now loads only the ones you've used within the last 6 months. I also took advantage of the server being down to create a couple of indexes on the tags tables that should also help with the speed.

Bill Maher pans Fox News ‘bias alert’

“[Each] day, in bright red letters, they post some example of what they think is ‘liberal bias.’ Except there’s only one small problem: it’s almost never an example of media bias. What they seem to have uncovered is that … grab hold of something … not everyone is a Republican,” Maher wrote. “The bit might as well be called ‘PEOPLE WHO SAY THINGS WE DON’T LIKE!’”
...
“This is almost sort of refreshing. Because it means that 95% of the time, we have to sit through some wingnut screeching about liberal media bias, they don’t actually understand who is actually bound to a standard of journalism (journalists) and who isn’t (everyone else),” Maher wrote. “They’re just upset that people exist outside their bubble and they don’t believe the same things they do.”

He then quipped: “So to recap: reality is now evidence of media bias. And so are people with opinions.”

New documents reveal events leading up to Benghazi attack

Reporters from ForeignPolicy.com say they found a draft letter expressing concern among documents left on site more than six weeks after the attack, and nearly a month after the FBI was there collecting evidence.

Notations indicate the letter was intended for the head of the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Benghazi.

"... early this morning at 0643, September 11, 2012, one of our diligent guards made a troubling report. Near our main gate, a member of the police force was seen in the upper level of a building across from our compound. It is reported that this person was photographing the inside of the U.S. special mission and furthermore that this person was part of the police unit sent to protect the mission."
....
Another draft letter dated two days before the attack complains that requested police support for Ambassador Stevens' visit had not been supplied.

"..We requested daily, twenty-four hour police protection at the front and rear of the U.S. mission as well as a roving patrol. In addition we requested the services of a police explosive detection dog. We were given assurances from the highest authorities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that all due support would be provided for Ambassador Stevens' visit to Benghazi. However, we are saddened to report that we have only received an occasional police presence at our main gate. Many hours pass when we have no police support at all."

The request for extra police protection probably wouldn't have been very helpful since it seems members of the police may have assisted with surveillance for the attack.

Anyone who seriously believes in that kind of shit has no place being put in charge of nuclear assets.

Jimmy Carter may well subscribe to some version of this, and he didn't nuke anything that I recall. He also wasn't silly enough to go on tape with his theology.

I don't know. What do people want? No one ever heard of Armageddon before?

(I kind of want to make a couple of bitter comments here about Iran and the bomb, but why bother? I generally believe that political self-interest will prevail, and that goes for Romney too.)

A very desperate attempt to hold on to the dual-nature view of humans:

'Near-death experiences occur when soul leaves nervous system'

A near-death experience occurs when quantum substances which form the soul leave the nervous system and enter the universe at large, according to a ground-breaking theory proposed by two eminent scientists.

According to this idea, consciousness is a programme for a quantum computer in the brain which can persist in the universe even after death, explaining the perceptions of those who have near-death experiences.

Dr Stuart Hameroff, Professor Emeritus at the Departments of Anesthesiology and Psychology and the Director of the Centre of Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona, has advanced the quasi-religious theory, the Daily Mail reported.

It is based on a quantum theory of consciousness he and British physicist Sir Roger Penrose have developed which holds that the essence of our soul is contained inside structures called microtubules within brain cells.

They have argued that our experience of consciousness is the result of quantum gravity effects in these microtubules, a theory which they dubbed orchestrated objective reduction (Orch-OR).

Thus it is held that our souls are more than theinteraction of neurons in the brain. They are in fact constructed from the very fabric of the universe - and may have existed since the beginning of time.

[...]

"Let's say the heart stops beating, the blood stops flowing, the microtubules lose their quantum state. The quantum information within the microtubules is not destroyed, it can't be destroyed, it just distributes and dissipates to the universe at large," Hameroff told the Science Channel's Through the Wormhole documentary.

"If the patient is resuscitated, revived, this quantum information can go back into the microtubules and the patient says 'I had a near death experience'," Hameroff said.

"If they're not revived, and the patient dies, it's possible that this quantum information can exist outside the body, perhaps indefinitely, as a soul," Hameroff added.

AUTHORITY!!

A camera would always be hidden in a video it was filming unless you could spot it in a reflective surface. Therefore, one could say there is no video evidence in the clip that the camera wasn't hidden.

But... two cameras, and there is a reflective surface behind Romney, but it's at the wrong angle. I don't know why the claim is made that they can be seen. But it sure looks like that host regularly video tapes his guests.

Contrary to the delusions of the wingnuts, the American populace at large aren't really that upset with Obama. Maybe some slight disenchantment here or there, but not the hate the flows so easily from the rabid right.

So, why wouldn't Obama get roughly the same number of votes this year?

The only way the Republicans then could win, not having a candidate that engages anyone positively, is to try and keep Obama voters from the polls.

There seems to always be some code language in America that basically boils down to black and/or brown people are stealing something from white people. re: #301 Douchecanoe and Ryan Too

There are a lot of ID laws on the books. I don't think photo IDs are a part of all of them.

I am not opposed to them, myself. What I am opposed to is creating them 90 days prior to an election (even a year before!) with no specifics as to what is needed, and then putting impediments in the way of people getting said IDs. Poor people and elderly should not have to pay for them (if you're on welfare or SocSec). And what is acceptable as an ID to get an ID is costly and sometimes beyond difficult to get (birth certificates are difficult to obtain for many elderly who were born in another state or before records were kept as they are now. Too many stories about elderly having a really rough go to get what is needed to vote.)

If they want new laws, they should go into effect just after an election and then be advertised thoroughly, and requirements stated at all government offices (welfare, SocSec, Medicare/caid, etc.)

The film retraces the extraordinary investigative work behind the stunning discovery that an asteroid struck the Earth 66 million years ago, triggering the mass extinction of dinosaurs and many other species of animals, plants and microorganisms. Ok, I am gonna let my geek flag fly. Here's my concept of EV machines.

You vote and get a number. That number correlates to your vote which is accessible online and shows how you voted in all catagories. If you voted on paper, it is scanned at the polling place and attached to the online record. It has an audit trail built in to capture any alterations to the vote.

Hey everyone!

Heard a wrenching stay in the driveway story on All Things Considered this afternoon.

A reporter got an email from a friend of a friend of a friend etc. asking for someone to check on his Aunt on the 8th floor of a project in lower Manhattan. 87 (or similar) lady living by herself. Has not had power, left the place, had a phone call since the storm.

No elevators working of course, the reporter/neighbor walked up the 8 floors & knocked on her door. Let her use her cell to call her maid of honor from her wedding 60 years ago who lives in Brooklyn, or somewhere abouts - with power.

The ball got rolling, she's staying with relatives now (There was a bit of a battle to get her out of her home)

There was another story about meals on wheels walking up 25 floors to an elderly man stuck in his apartment without power/water/food.

I'm very concerned for these many "silent" people.

A whole lot of people around here are showing signs of PTSD, complete with the 500 yard stare and other issues due to lack of sleep, power, and their entire world turned upside down.

It's similar to what happened after Katrina for those folks down on the Gulf Coast, or even a microcosm of what happened following 9/11 here in the NYC metro area with a combination of people who couldn't process what they've witnessed and are experiencing plus those who ran full tilt towards the danger to help others.

This disaster has brought out the best and worst in people - as witnessed by innumerable acts of kindness as well as looting and other criminal activities or the simple act of cutting a line to get gas.

I've spoken with relatives who live out on LI and it's worse than you can possibly imagine out there. Entire neighborhoods are wiped out. Long Beach LI? Gone. Sure, the apartment buildings are still standing, but everything else is heavily damaged. No potable water. No working sewage systems. No power. Spotty cell phone service. Inland, the flooding wasn't as bad, but in places like Happauge the entire tree canopy is gone. And with it the utilities and many homes.

Rinse and repeat up and down LI into CT and across NY's Hudson Valley and down through NJ into MD and DE and PA.

Things are gonna suck hard around here - and the major accomplishments like dewatering the MTA tunnels still seem like small peanuts compared to the fact that millions remain without power.

This needs to be a wakeup call to reconsider building codes, zoning, and land use across all of our coastlines. Building on barrier islands may provide a pretty view, but those islands were, are, and continue to be transitory no matter how much we wish them to remain forever unchanged. All it takes is a good storm to rearrange the coast.

Sandy was just that kind of storm. And those storms will happen again.

For the East Coast and NYC metro area, this was our generation's Long Island Express (the 1938 storm that killed hundreds and tore apart Long Island before slamming through New England).

While I'm ranting about voting machines, it's the nature of electronics to fail after a couple of decades or so.

No, they fail after 1 week of being delivered on site.

Electrolytic capacitors, which almost everything has, are only rated for 15 years by electronic manufacturers.

Bullshit. Put one of those puppies next to a 10 watt power resistor, and they will fail within 6-7 months.

It blows my mind that reliable mechanical machines we replaced in service by ...what... exactly?

345 lawhawk  Thu, Nov 1, 2012 6:02:39pm

To give some idea of just how random the devastation was, my brother had to deal with only flooding to his garage and having to clear out mud and sand. Most of his landscaping was torn away (it was newly installed a few weeks back).

But a few houses away? Apparently a propane tank came free somewhere closer to the coast, washed inland, and blew up.

Our block had power uninterrupted? Next block over? Multiple trees down, and no word on when they're getting power back.

A tree will topple here and take out a car or a house. Elsewhere, it may drop between two homes without damaging anything else.

The closer you got to the coast - the more complete the devastation. We didn't nearly have the winds in Bergen that were experienced elsewhere. My BiL said that it sounded and looked just like a tornado hit. Complete and utter devastation.

At least no one I know was hurt; we can always replace stuff.

My friends from west of Sandy Hook are in a pickle. 1st floor of the unit they rent got inundated (4' of water). That flooded out the furnace and hot water heater of both sides of the duplex. Most of the 1st floor furnishings and objects are toast. (They evacuated most of the electronics and more valuable items upstairs before getting out themselves.)

Still no power (of course). And finding a rental or hotel to reside in temporarily is problematic due to their dog (100 lb German Shepherd) who is currently being boarded. And they won't settle back in to the current abode without heat and power since they have a 4-year-old child.

I'm a big fan of Electronically scanned paper ballots. Easy to test, easy to recount, easy to hand count if needed.

California (or one of the CA counties) has a process I really like. They pull a random machine from each precinct on election day and hold a mock election on that machine thoughout the day. At the end of the day they know what the totals should be. So it is an election day audit to make sure no machine has been tampered with before the actual election...

I asked that today. My friends are looking into what they have to do in order to absentee vote. For NJ, it looks like they can do an absentee up to Monday by submitting a form with the county clerk in person. Things are past the deadline for applying for a mail-in absentee ballot.

I don't particularly mind that, but there are really broader fish to fry. The voting "machinery" in each state and county needs to be professional, not political. Have the Secretary of State oversee and certify voting should go the way of the dodo. The office of director of the board of elections should be a professional, appointed position that is subject to approval by the legislative body I the state. Overall, the commitment needs to be made to make the organizations responsible for overseeing elections professional and neutral.

Obama is up so far in the impacted states that there's zero chance of the storm selectively depressing enough Dem votes only to swing things in Mitt's favor. Actually, it's probably going to be quicker than many other locations. Being the financial capital of the world/nation will mean that they'll expedite repairs to the grid. I found out that my building in Manhattan should have power back tomorrow afternoon and it's near Ground Zero. They're working to restart the 14th Street power station, and when that comes online, that would restore power to much of lower Manhattan not covered by other portions of the grid (and that would also help get subways restored below 34th).

It'll be a problem for those on the periphery. Those who are in the suburbs or those on the barrier islands or shore communities where things are more spread out.
