New Intelligence Timeline of Benghazi Attack Refutes Right Wing Claims Again: No Order to Stand Down

Fake outrage collapses even further
Politics • Views: 50,705

The right wing’s attempt to hype up a fake outrage over the Benghazi attack is continuing to fall apart: New Detailed Account of Benghazi Attack Notes CIA’s Quick Response.

Intelligence officials have disclosed a new detailed timeline of the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, acknowledging the CIA played a greater role in responding to the attack than has previously been disclosed.  A senior U.S. intelligence official also insisted that the CIA security team that initially responded to the attack was not given orders “to stand down in providing support,” as had been suggested in media reports.

The timeline provided by a senior U.S. intelligence official gives the first precise account of how CIA security teams provided the first response to the Sept. 11 attack on the diplomatic mission in Benghazi, which killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.

The attack has become a political hot potato in the presidential campaign, with conservatives accusing the administration of not being transparent.  The State Department has previously released a detailed account of the night’s events, but did not acknowledge a CIA role in the response.  The timeline given by a senior Intelligence official  confirms that the facility previously described by the State Department as an annex, was in fact, a facility housing CIA security officers.  It does not provide any additional details on the current intelligence assessment that the attack was an opportunistic result of earlier protests that day outside the U.S. embassy in Cairo over an anti-Muslim movie.

The official says there was “no second guessing” of those on the ground in Libya by senior officials either in Libya or Washington.

Two men held in rape of 10-year-old girl in Lutz home
Daniel Cardido Diaz, 20, of 14711 E Idell St., and Nicolas Juan Carrion, 22, 5917 N 15th St., were arrested on counts of sexual battery on a victim younger than 12 and were held without bail.

I expect this charge to be raised to capitol sexual battery. And in Florida, if found guilty, mean life. Good. Fuckers.

It is puzzling and contradictory to me that that there is nothing coming out now saying words to the effect "The following military support was directed to conduct an evacuation of US Personnel." This comes from my experience on several forward deployments from '77 to '90. One being in 85-86, with several months sitting off the coast of Libya, and attached to a staff that was in charge of the entire battle force, so I sat in the operational briefings daily, as well as being a watch officer for one of the major warfare roles at the force level.

We do have, however, news reports that strongly imply something was being done, but not really, nothing was done, but we're not sure, but really there wasn't....confused at best.

Where is the detail on the two destroyers ordered to help? It was posted here, and I recall commenting on how Tomahawks aren't great at taking out street mobs. Something was happening, just no one is saying what.

The reason we have a military is to defend American interests, and the safety of our diplomatic personnel is one of them. Reports are that AFRICOM got the reports for the Embassy under attack are out. Why nothing? Doesn't make sense. Seriously, the US military plans and trains for "crisis management." It is the job: The ultimate, as one of my Commanding Officers appropriately reminded me of one day in a discussion, in human crisis is war....

One of the specific missions Marine afloat units train for is "Non-Combatant evacuation operations" (NEO). Doesn't mean they have to show up by an assault across the beach, but they have the mission while forward deployed, and can get there with any asset that can place them.

Other units of the military have all sorts of capabilities to conduct such roles, CSAR (Combat Search and Rescue) units, also forward deployed with the Navy, and a part of the mission of the USAF Special Operations function.

We are out over a month from the event, and finally intelligence officials are commenting on the attack on the Ambassador. What would the effect of the President having a press conference, complete with question do to defuse this all, if in fact, the right responses were all undertaken, and this just, be time and distance, was unable to be achieved? "We tired to get there, and did so with every available capacity at our disposal, but we couldn't get there, no matter how fast we issued orders, which were sent out at this time, this time, this time, etc"?

My own experience in 1979 was very, very different. While I had no direct line to the White House, I was standing in my Radio Central, reading the traffic one evening, and saw a Flash traffic (highest priority and it made the teletype ring bells as it printed) message emerge from the teletype. It directed 4 of our escorts to head to the Suez Canal and prepare for a deployment to the Persian Gulf for "in excess of 120 days." I didn't know until later, that was because of the Embassy take over in Iran. The message wasn't addressed to my ship, but we were the logistics vessel in the Med, and I ripped it off, ran for the Ops Boss and Captain. Within about 20 minutes, we had our position report out to COMSERVFORSIXTHFLT and very, very shortly after, those ships were sent to use to refuel and rearm, with directions to us to provide all support necessary for them to be fully loaded and fueled. We were replenishing all night long as a result.

My ship was way down the food chain, but we had action directed at us probably within hours.

No reports for the Situation Room, no positive statements of who was in charge of what, who tried what, we really did use the full ability to try and save lives, but, seriously, it couldn't happen, but not for lack of trying...it's the vacuum that is puzzling.

A police officer in New Mexico is facing a lawsuit from a family who claims he used a taser gun on their 10-year-old son during a school career day after the boy jokingly refused to scrub the officer’s car. The boy, R.D., was knocked unconscious and is reportedly suffering from post-traumatic shock, according to the Courthouse News.

Chris Webb, a New Mexico Department of Public safety and Motor Transportation Police Officer, allegedly sent more than 50,000 volts into the boy, who weighs about 100 pounds. Instead of contacting medical personnel after pulling the taser barbs from R.D., the suit alleges, Officer Webb carried him into the principal’s office.

It is puzzling and contradictory to me that that there is nothing coming out now saying words to the effect "The following military support was directed to conduct an evacuation of US Personnel."

From a week ago:

(CBS News) On the night of the deadly attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya, a team of American military commandos was sent from Europe to an airfield at Sigonella, in Sicily, Italy, putting them at least an hour's flight away from Benghazi, CBS News has learned.

The team, known as the Commander's In-extremis Force, was designed specifically for quick reaction to unforeseen emergencies. But U.S. officials say it did not arrive in Sicily until after the attack was over.

Even if the team had been ready in time, confusion about what was happening on the ground in Benghazi -- and State Department concerns about violating Libyan sovereignty -- made a military rescue mission impractical, the officials say.

Any other information you and Bob need spoon fed to you? It's kind of sad watching grown men try to spin their own lack of insider knowledge into some massive scandal, while politically masturbating to the deaths of US consular personnel.

I get it, you guys really don't like Obama and desperately want this to have blown up into a game changing October surprise. But it didn't, and no matter how much derpy bullshit you two dig up and post to the pages that's not going to change.

October jobs report is out.

[Link: money.cnn.com...]

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Hiring increased last month, while the unemployment rate ticked higher, according to a report released just four days before the presidential election.

The economy added 171,000 jobs in October, while the unemployment ticked up to 7.9, from 7.8% in September, the Labor Department said Friday.

Economists surveyed by CNNMoney had expected employers to add 125,000 positions in the month and unemployment to inch up to 7.9%.

Expect the wingnuts to claim that the 0.1% change in unemployment from last month is somehow proof that the Obama administration somehow manipulated the September numbers.
Never mind that the number of added jobs outpaced forecasts for the past two months in a row.

But I have it on good authority that we all just want to hate each other, really.

I'm doing clean-up in the Harlem parks today. A lot of the volunteer opportunities (the Mayor's office has a cool signup thingy and they email you opportunities) are not down in lower Manhattan and the other heavily hit areas. I think they're letting the professionals deal with that, and use the amateur help like me to do the less-intense jobs around the city. Makes sense.

I'm going to be walking across Central Park to get to the smaller parks I'll be working on. Be interesting to see what went down there.

The Parks Dept. has gone through many of the parks to secure damaged trees, but I'm sure you're going to see widespread damage. Central Park Conservancy has more resources than other parks, so the damage will be much higher elsewhere - especially closer to the shore.

As far as Lower Manhattan goes, they're using the Battery as a staging area to pump out the tunnels, but the SI Ferry is getting restarted at noon, which will be a huge help for SI residents getting out of SI.

Then the trick will be getting subway service restarted below 34th Street.

That's up to ConEd, which has to get power restarted. MTA's Joe Lhota said that they're waiting on ConEd to energize its systems, and once the power is back up, MTA can start service within hours.

GOLDSBORO (AP) — North Carolina election officials have asked prosecutors to investigate reports of a trailer parked at an early voting site that held effigies of former and current elected officials with nooses around their necks.

State Board of Elections Executive Director Gary Bartlett said a truck with the attached open-air trailer pulled up to a Wayne County library that offered early voting Thursday morning. Photographs show eight effigies and signs on the trailer side naming President Barack Obama, Gov. Beverly Perdue and state and local law enforcement officials.

Bartlett said information was forwarded to the U.S. Attorney's Office and the Wayne County district attorney. Bartlett said First Amendment freedoms end if someone is intimidated or gets mad while trying to vote.

It almost sounds like Bartlett, or the reporter, is trying to downplay the offense. Making someone "get mad" doesn't end First Amendment freedoms.

Seems like some local groups didn't want nonunion folks working - they might have gotten turned away from NJ, but they instead headed to LI where they will get to help restore service. So far, I'd give major props to Joe Lhota at MTA for getting the system up and running as fast as they have - and they've got a ways to go. Amazing that they've gotten as much service as they have under the circumstances, and they're now waiting on Con Ed to restore service to Lower Manhattan.

Christie and Booker in NJ are doing an exceptional job in getting info out and doing what they can to get services restored across their battered state.

Bloomberg is lucky Lhota has done what he's done at the MTA because services aren't being restored nearly as well as they should, and SI and Southern Brooklyn and Queens are hammered and not getting the resources they need. That's all while he decided to go ahead with the marathon this weekend. It's something that former Mayor Giuliani agreed with, but many NYers are aghast about.

Fact is, there are resources diverted to put on the marathon that would be better served by going to those hardest hit areas. Putting up media tents with their own generators, media vehicles to accompany riders, etc., are all items that could better be used by people in the hard hit areas.

It's a significant misallocation of resources - a delay in the marathon would allow more power to be restored and alleviate some of the worst conditions.

Closer to my home in Bergen County, I'm seeing tree crews working to remove trees from on or near power lines - and the next step will be for PSEG or the mutual support crews to come through to restore those lines.

There are still far too many hospitals and nursing facilities/medical facilities running on generators.

Bloomberg is lucky Lhota has done what he's done at the MTA because services aren't being restored nearly as well as they should, and SI and Southern Brooklyn and Queens are hammered and not getting the resources they need. re: #6 Curt

Personally, I think when the CIA is involved, you're not looking at a normal military situation. As soon as it was identified as a CIA house, it was obvious to me why information was slow to come out and that we would not be getting real-time information simply because it was CIA.

Granted, I am not up on my black ops (short of reading Bourne and watching Covert Affairs), but I think the CIA works on its own wavelength.

And I am curious...where were ships in the region? How long would it have taken to get that kind of assistance to Benghazi? What could have happened to manned aircraft flying over Libya...meaning, would a bad situation have been made worse had an American aircraft been taken down on Libyan soil?

To me, this isn't a situation where a SEAL team could have helped due to the "in the moment" happenings.

But what do I know?

re: #24 RadicalModerate

Another data point, Gallup's unemployment survey sharply improved down to 7%/7.4% (unajusted/seasonally-adjusted unemployment) from 7.9/8.1, last month:
[Link: www.gallup.com...]

ADP's jobs survey was also positive.

This morning on my ride to work I heard interviews from people suffering from the storm. They have no electricity, gas, money, food, etc. They are worried about their kids. Lots of people are tweeting and texting that they still need to be rescued and a cold front is moving in tonight.

Then there is this. Major backlash is happening because of Bloomberg's decision.

As hundreds of thousands of Big Apple residents suffer in homes left without power by Hurricane Sandy, two massive generators are being run 24/7 in Central Park — to juice a media tent for Sunday’s New York City Marathon.

And a third “backup” unit sits idle, in case one of the generators fails.

The three diesel-powered generators crank out 800 kilowatts — enough to power 400 homes in ravaged areas like Staten Island, the Rockaways and downtown Manhattan.

Yeah, I've been watching that scenario up close for the last 4 years:

- GF's mom, who watches Fox 9 hours a day, convinced we're a socialist country and that there were death panels in the ACA

- College-educated IT tech guy who believes Obama hates people who are successful and posts things like a cartoon acccusing the POTUS actually working with Al Queda (AFTER Bin Laden was taken out)

- Alleged former dittohead who is now "independent", whose new views consist of getting angry when Republican radicalism is pointed out, and claims Obama is worst. President. ever.

I'm not going to claim I'm unbiased, or that I have all the answers, but when the Democrats do something stupid or illegal, I'm not going to hide my head in the sand. I didn't like the way Bush ran the country, but I didn't express that by saying he plotted 9/11.

That's why I get frustrated with some of the supposed "moderate" conservatives I see here and elsewhere. They sort of begrudgingly acknowledge stuff like, "Yeah, well, maybe forced vaginal ultrasounds might be a bad idea", but vote GOP anyway.

Classic definition of enabling.

Jersey Central Power & Light spokesman Ron Morano said in an interview with News 12 New Jersey that JCP&L has welcomed all out-of-state crews.

"We have not turned away any help," he said. "Absolutely not."

WAFF [the source of the original report claiming that they were turned away b/c of being nonunion -lawhawk] revised its report to say that crews from Decatur Utilities and Joe Wheeler in Trinity were told to stand down. Those crews went to Long Island, N.Y. to work instead.

Huntsville Utilities was not turned away and is working, but the Huntsville NBC affiliate didn't specify where.

Did President Obama want Ambassador Stevens killed because Stevens knew too much? Were Stevens and Obama running guns to al-Qaeda in Syria much like Holder and Obama were running guns to drug cartels in Mexico with operation Fast and Furious? Did Obama think allowing al-Qaeda to assassinate Stevens would put the lid on the Syrian gun running operation before it could become a scandal just before the General Election?

May is considered a moderate and a serious thinker in the yokel GOP.

I am seriously smelling desperation among the GOP leaders like Hannity and Limbaugh. Hannity has been yammering continuously about Benghazi for days, with one unfounded and ignorant assumption after another. Apparently these people assume the mere presence of American warships in the Med, or an AC-130 in Italy, means we can whistle up a Hollywood style rescue mission in a couple of hours. It doesn't work that way.
We have a lot of ships in the Med but it's a big area and the closest ones could still have been hours away by chopper. In any case, not every ship carries a detachment that can fast-rope right into a hot LZ and rush the good guys out, especially when we can't be sure where the good guys are. Even if we had the AC-130 armed and ready to go, an unlikely scenario to say the least, it would still have had a long flight to Benghazi, with no planned and briefed support package or airspace clearance. If it got there, what then? You don't start blasting into the streets when, again, you don't know where our people are, exactly how many there are, and what their situations are. One thing we did know, from phone intercepts, is that friendly militias were trying to reach the consulate and effect a rescue themselves. Without direct contact between them and the strike aircraft, how do we know which of the armed people on the ground are with us, and which against us?
The whole radio-Repub Benghazi "scandal" is a cloud of smoke, cynically conceived to confuse and inflame the ignorant and irrational.

There are people still trapped in Staten Island. The runners should be helping to rescue instead of running around the city.

Yes, they really are. Almost literally every Republican I know quotes their talking points. Their blessing, or at least acquiescence, is an absolute condition for serious candidacy in the GOP. Their opposition is the kiss of death. No GOP candidate dares cross them.

looks like wireless door and window alarms are cheap. I'll run out to home depot this morning and pick one up just for instant peace of mind but I'm probably going to have to get a real monitored system professionally installed.

We've got a monitored system here, with wireless sensors on most windows (the windows in the newer rooms are wired, since they're part of new construction and were easy for them to hard-wire).

A security system does wonders for your sense of security if you can afford getting one installed. A lot of security companies will actually set up the system for free if you sign a plan with them, and that will save you a few hundred bucks.

Glad to hear you're safe.

Schultz does stand up for average Americans, and for that alone, I don't hate him (but man, really, he is over the top most times). And he doesn't lie like Fox and Rush. That, to me, is the biggest issue. The right just lies and lies no matter how often they are called on it.

That might be something that building codes/zoning/construction practices should consider in future building/rebuilding - nationally.

Loss of power at gas stations means loss of transport systems and emergency generators across entire regions.

Mandating generators at gas stations would enable those businesses to stay operative if power lost but otherwise intact. Not a complete fix, but one that would go a long way to helping.

Talk about hitting someone when they're down...

After Sandy, Nor'Easter May Hit

As steps toward recovery slowly progress in the wake of Sandy, another storm may soon be hitting the East Coast in time for Election Day.

The National Weather Service's Prediction Center issued a warning for a possible nor'easter, which may hit the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions as early as next Tuesday.

While the storm is not anticipated to be as destructive as Sandy, the prediction center anticipated the storm will "cause light to moderate precipitation around that region of the country" and "produce impacts much less extreme."

The Washington Post reports that the European Centre Medium Range Forecast (EURO) model, which tracked Sandy over a week before it hit, shows a simulation of the storm that will bring moderate rains and gusty winds in many of the same areas ravaged by the superstorm.

The impending storm may possibly delay the recuperation efforts of both New York and New Jersey.

I don't think canceling the marathon is right - delay it for a week or two. That's what would be appropriate under the circumstances. By next week, subways should be functioning, power will be restored to many areas, and gas crunch will have dissipated.

I sympathize with Bloomberg on this. He's a "business first" guy for obvious reasons. The Marathon brings a mountain of business into town, and it would kill him to let it get away. Postponing is probably impractical, since plane tickets and hotel rooms and the like are already booked, with money spent and such. But I get the objections. Dark, here's the thing. Past studies show that presidents try to fulfill their campaign promises.

So what you're saying is either that Mitt's a liar who will say anything or that you aren't voting for him based on what he says he'll do but on what you think he'll do. I know that's not what you think, but it's what the reality is.

Presidential candidates try to fulfill campaign promises. So if Mitt promised that FEMA is immoral and all its duties should be privatized, on what basis beyond hope do you expect him to be unable to fulfill that promise?

Hotel rooms can be swapped for those who are in need of immediate housing issues in NYC metro; reservations can be rearranged. We're talking about 20-30k runners plus all the support staff and Sanitation Dept and Highway Dept and NYPD. All those agencies have to devote resources to restoration of services.

The marathon might be a temporary gain for business, but it hampers short term recovery and indicates that he's more interested in running a diversion than restoring services.

Though, I will say that some of those complaining about Bloomberg are GOPers on Staten Island whose candidates nationally are pushing a bootstraps approach and not one where government does emergency response (FEMA), etc. There's a bit of cognitive dissonance going on there (an all too common occurrence).

Waiting in a long gas line with the engine running is beyond silly. They should have shut down the engines and put the vehicles in neutral. Lines moves up one car length, let off the brake and roll forward. Failing a decline, push your vehicle up one length. Failing that, turn the engine on just long enough to roll up one spot, then shut it back down.

In a local fuel crisis, burning fuel just sitting in line is silly.

I think Romney lacks the basic function of empathy, something that is needed to consider ramifications of actions. This was demonstrated over and over in his Bain days, and by many of the things he has said, including the really odd football analogy you noted. Ryan is like that, too. There is a basic level of amnesia when you consider that there are people at the end of those policies. It's not pie in the sky, it impacts lives. Cutting time on unemployment because it takes longer to find a job in a bad economy, means people don't eat or lose their homes. Ending Obamacare means people with preexisting conditions are at the mercy of insurance companies (meaning they cannot get insurance unless they work for a large company).

These decisions sound great in theory (even though most have been proven they don't work) but in reality there are ramifications that impact AMERICANS. Real live, breathing people.

The day of his fake disaster relief benefit, Mitt was asked over a dozen times about his position on FEMA. If he wanted to give a clear and unambiguous statement regarding how disaster relief ought to work, he could have. Instead, he ducked it. Why do you think he did that?

I suspect that it's because he continues to walk the fine line between the nutball Grover Norquist base and the rest of us. Since he can't figure out how to square that circle, he went into full "Does not compute!" brain freeze mode. Which happens when you don't have core beliefs. I disagree. Let me quote:

KING: What else, Governor Romney? You've been a chief executive of a state. I was just in Joplin, Missouri. I've been in Mississippiand Louisianaand Tennesseeand other communities dealing with whether it's the tornadoes, the flooding, and worse. FEMA is about to run out of money, and there are some people who say do it on a case-by-case basis and some people who say, you know, maybe we're learning a lesson here that the states should take on more of this role. How do you deal with something like that?

ROMNEY: Absolutely. Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction. And if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that's even better.

Instead of thinking in the federal budget, what we should cut -- we should ask ourselves the opposite question. What should we keep? We should take all of what we're doing at the federal level and say, what are the things we're doing that we don't have to do? And those things we've got to stop doing, because we're borrowing $1.6 trillion more this year than we're taking in....

We cannot...

KING: Including disaster relief, though?

ROMNEY: We cannot -- we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we'll all be dead and gone before it's paid off. It makes no sense at all. [my emphasis]

B is of the set A, and C is of the set B, therefore C is of the set A. Spending (that racks up debt) is immoral, and FEMA disaster relief racks up debt, therefore FEMA disaster relief is immoral.

Dark, it's like saying disrespect in church is immoral, and singing bawdy lyrics to the hymn during service is disrespect in church. (Yes, been there.) So singing bawdy lyrics during service is immoral, and any attempt to parse it otherwise results in mother boxing your ears for sass.

When the GOP suppresses inconvenient truths

The non-partisan Congressional Research Service pull(ed) a recent report that documented what many already knew: giving tax breaks to the rich helps concentrate wealth at the top, but it does not boost the economy. Republican lawmakers, led by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), had the report killed.

When you consider people as Human Capital, we are nothing but a line item to most of the GOP. We are worker bees who are easily replaced by other worker bees. It is best if we don't think (see Texas and removing critical thinking from education curriculum).

This is and always will be the problem with the GOP. People do not matter, unless they are very wealthy, in their terms Job Creators (even though most are not...counting your interest payments and stock accounts do not create jobs). Small businesses run this country. And they are not considered at all within the GOP.

A hedge fund with 10 people is not a small business.

As has been known for a very long time. "Trickle Down" stops at the first trough, where the pigs gobble up everything. The only thing that trickles down after that is piss.

You wanna know why jobs suck right now? Because employers realized that desperate people who are afraid of losing their livelihoods will do work that was previously assigned to two or three people, when pressed.

And not complain about it. This is their biggest complaint about collective bargaining; it benefits the masses.

When people cannot easily change jobs, they are slaves to whomever they work for. No matter how bad it gets or how much abuse they take or that there is no path to prosperity for them at that company, they have little recourse because there is always another who is worse off then they are and who is willing to accept anything because they have less.

That is not MY America. It is not Obama's America. WE are America. All of us.

(Or at least ones you are willing to share with anyone.)

What it was a calculated decision by the Romney campaign that Mitt would not answer any reporter questions this week. The decision was made to sacrifice spontaneity and responsiveness in the interests of ensuring there would be no late-game gaffes.

Here is some more troubling news about the Benghazi attack. This is a news bulletin of the Dutch NOS news agency!

Dutch journalist Harald Doornbos found two letters in the US consulate after the attack in which is written that the US diplomats said they were feeling themselves unsafe in the Libyan city. They asked Libya for more protection. Especially troubling was that they complained about a Libyan agent who took pictures of the consulate!

Shortly thereafter the consulate was overrun and the aftermath is known.

It's unknown if the American foreign ministry knew about the letters.

Details from the OFA call with the POTUS

Mostly a pep talk with some good numbers. Some numbers out of swing states
Wiped out lead in FL in 48 hours in absentee ballots
60,000 ballot lead in IA same as in 2008
NV 60,000 vote lead in Clark County (80% of the state lives in Clark County)
NC 340,000 new registered voters about 1/3 have already voted
OH ahead in early voting and consistent lead in the polls
VA Democratic precincts are outperforming Republicans in early voting
WI Democratic precincts are outperforming Republicans in early voting

President (He sounded a little hoarse, but upbeat): Right now we should win if the organization just keeps going and doing what needs to be done.
Vote will be closer than 2008, but he only won 52.9% of the vote in 2008
Been out raised badly over the first half of October
Everybody should early vote if possible and encourage others to do so
Said he’s proud of everybody an thanked people for their hard work.

Axelrod: Discussed voter suppression efforts and efforts to confuse voters with false mailers and advertising. Said campaign needs to be funded to combat all false ads and deploy people to states to respond to problems on Election Day.
Its crunch time: Talked about what’s at stake. What has been achieved and what could be lost.

The funny/sad thing is that in most cases this is penny wise but pound foolish.

First foolishness: Cutting to the bone gives little opportunity for growth. If I'm working every single moment just to sustain (my work plus joe's plus sally's) I cannot cope with new customers - there just isn't time.

Second foolishness: study after study after study shows that excess workloads are counter-productive. For short bursts more gets done. Sustained, less gets done even than the 'normal' load, much less the total load that is being attempted. Sustained 60 hour weeks wind up being surpassed by 35 hour per week workers, much less the traditional 40s.

But pennies are counted today and dollars are counted tomorrow, and far too many counters are relatives of the White Queen.

His bullshit on FEMA was released as a statement so he did not have to face questions.

Shit like this is what is wrong with this country. Obama is simultaneously a Muslim and a member of Rev. Wright's Christian congregation. Obama's father is simultaneously an Atheist and a Muslim. This is not said ironically, it is said with fervent belief of its veracity. This is the truth, for these people.

The Three Great Premises of Idiot America:

(1) Any theory is valid if it sells books, soaks up ratings or otherwise moves units.
(2) Any thing can be true if someone says it loudly enough.
(3) Fact is that which enough people believe. Truth is determined by how fervently they believe it.

- Charles Pierce

As was noted earlier in this thread: American politics have gone to shit because we no longer argue policy, we argue the basic facts of reality. The disagreement is not over how we should solve problem X, it's over whether X is even a problem in the first place. I'd recommend skipping the home improvement store alarm systems, especially if you're already looking at getting a monitored system; it'll just be a waste of time and money. However, I'd stay away from ADT if at all possible; I work in the business and ADT's customer service reputation is horrid. Shop around and find you a good local alarm company.

Not that I've seen. Bush's key selling point was "You know he means what he says" and McCain also had the straight shooter thing going. Not sure. I was only one in 1988. It's worth noting that he was doing a pretty good job with Bush I in the polls until the debates hit though. And it's not like he was "next in line" for the Democratic nomination in '88 so he must have had some charisma and likability going for him.

It wasn't just the debates, though. Dukakis thought he had the game won after a successful DNC, and so proceeded to take a too-long vacation in the Berkshires. That gave Bush time to campaign and catch up. Dukakis also was unready for the barrage of negative ads that Lee Atwater had set to run in the fall of 1988. His campaign's lack of preparation meant that the ads succeeded in running up his negatives.

American's were too stupid to figure out that they were being lied to by Atwater and the press played along. If he is pissed he has every right to be pissed.

America instead wound up with another conservative dinosaur, George H.W. Bush who despite his cleaned up reputation today, was another lying little snake. The whole intents of that election was to keep the Democrats from power and face hearing and possible jail time for the Iran-Contra affair.

Basically he got hit with a couple of things that required more than soundbites to answer, plus an opportunistic photo that made him look ridiculous and enhanced the "out of his competence" image.

Willie Horton was the big one, and it was while dealing with the Horton question that the "what if your wife was raped" question arose.

What is somewhat sad about the last is that if you hear a recording you can hear the intensity - the fact he'd hate it but he'd stand by his principles. In print, however, it comes across as weak and ridiculous. The same if it's merely quoted or paraphrased.

There is some reason to believe there was a little hanky panky from the military for the picture. Dukakis was wearing a helmet that was a size too large. The military copes with that for its soldiers in that you can adjust the fit across a surprising range. But it still looks ridiculous. And since it was a guarantee there'd be a photo op and pretty much everyone who'd worn the helmets knows how ridiculous it is when you wear one the wrong size, well, the suspicions of hanky panky. Or at least stupidity.

[...]

“You know that if the President is re-elected, he will still be unable to work with the people in Congress,” Romney said. “He has ignored them, attacked them, blamed them. The debt ceiling will come up again, and shutdown and default will be threatened, chilling the economy.

Relief efforts in Fair Lawn continue. I was out and about and PSE&G is busy in my vicinity. They had tree crews working ahead of them - cutting away trees that had brought down lines on Radburn Rd., and were already in the process of putting up new poles. They had to take a break to get additional poles. Once the poles are up, they'll have to restring the lines followed by running new lines up to the homes where the power was ripped from the poles.

Elsewhere, tree crews are out by the Radburn post office (and we even got mail this morning). But incredibly, cars were ignoring traffic cones about ongoing work and drove through the active work scene - putting everyone at risk. Crazy stuff.

The tree crew I spoke with had trucks from Indiana and came in from Wisconsin. They'll be in the area as long as it takes.

It's a monumental effort.

I've got pictures to post later - some from the same area I took the other day to see the difference.

Also, I saw PSE&G survey crews marking down where additional trees need to be addressed - those leaning on poles/wires/etc. It's heartening to see, even though it's taking too long by half.

Neighbors from on the other side of the park said that they were told a week to 10 days. They have generators running. Other folks I met said they were conserving their generators b/c of the lines for gas.

The quicker power gets restored to gas stations, the sooner the gas mess will ease. The more homes that see power restored, the less people will need to go for gas to fill up their generators.

Oh, and speaking of generators - I saw way too many of them located too close to their homes, even to the point of being in garages or enclosed spaces. Those are CO poisonings in the making.

People wont even realize they're getting poisoned until it is too late.

Yeah, it is the people saying "why didn't we send in the AC-130H?" that are living in a fantasy action movie world. It isn't like we keep those things sitting around on 5 minute alert status. By the time they assembled a flight crew, pulled ammo from the bunkers, loaded ammo and gas, and flew to Benghazi the whole thing would have been over for hours already.

Add to that the lack of available real time targeting info or coordination from the ground and you have a recipe for a real snafu even if it had been able to make it on scene in time. This was a small arms ground fight with the exception of a few RPG and mortar rounds, that only lasted about 8 hours from beginning to end, in the middle of the night. There were no other ground forces available that could reach the scene in time other than the ones sent from Tripoli, and air assets that could have gotten there, like fighters, would have been useless in the ground battle.

All this hand wringing about "Obama abandoning our people" has absolutely no basis in reality, none.

Geraldo demolishes Fox News ‘misinformation’ on Benghazi: ‘That is a lie!’

After weeks of hyperventilating spin-coverage of the tragic events in Libya nearly two months ago, Geraldo Rivera on Friday finally had his fill and lashed out at his coworkers’ “misleading” claims, calling the network’s narrative about the attack “misinformation” designed to support an outright “lie.”

“You are misleading the American people because you want to make a political point,” Rivera told fellow Fox News host Eric Bolling. “We have never in the history of the United States of America mounted a raid on the circumstance described here. We have never done it. The Israelis rescued their people in Tevi — seven days to mount that operation. This was seven hours.”

There was never going to be an AC-130 sent to Benghazi. The enemy had already shown themselves to have HMGs and mortars, and we knew how many SA-24s had gone missing. Drones could be sent, or helicopters, but the AC-130 is just too vulnerable to modern SAMs to be sent into an environment where the enemy might have them.

The entirety of the press should be that way; call bullshit when it's said and hold everyone accountable. We wouldn't have this situation with Romney lying with every syllable that comes out of his mouth if we had a functioning press. But everyone is so afraid of the Liberal Media label that we have the MBF at every step.

What saddens me most is that this is going to become the norm for elections going forward. We the People deserve better than that.

"Whenever the people are well informed, they can be trusted with their own government; that whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice, they may be relied on to set them to rights."

Thomas Jefferson to Richard Price, January 8, 1789

But when the press can't set the lies right, we have ill informed people trying to fix the wrong problems that just let the real problems fester and destroy our nation.

The point is no matter who wins (and I'm confident Obama will win) we have an obligation to respect the win and give the winner our support.

‘Fox & Friends’: Delay NBC hurricane telethon because it might help Obama

The hosts of Fox & Friends on Friday suggested that NBC should postpone a Hurricane Sandy telethon until after the election because making sure that the event did not benefit President Barack Obama was more important than helping storm victims.

NBC announced earlier this week that Christina Aguilera, Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Sting would all be performing a the Friday benefit concert, “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together.” Money collected during the one-hour broadcast will go to the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

But because most of the announced stars have supported Obama in the past, conservative media have panned the concert as “an ode to Obama’s grand and glorious leadership during Hurricane Sandy.”

On Friday, Fox & Friends guest host Eric Bolling floated the idea that NBC had rushed the concert “to make President Obama look presidential.”

“It does look like they are trying squeeze things in,” co-host Steve Doocy agreed. “Where are the conservative performers? There aren’t any on the list I saw.

Fox and Friends are fucking evil bastards.

Reading the quote two thoughts came to mind, one mild the other cruel.

mild: Maybe the conservative entertainers were asked but thought it immoral to help the victims instead of letting them help themselves.

cruel: Maybe the organizers wanted people to come instead of staying away.

Top Romney advisor crusaded to outlaw homosexuality and abortion in Africa

Fox News legal analyst and top advisor to the presidential campaign of former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA), Jay Sekulow, head of the right-wing American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), has supported campaigns to criminalize homosexuality and abortion in Africa. According to Mother Jones, Sekulow and his son Jordan set up ACLJ offices across the developing continent dedicated to persuading local officials to “take the Christian’s views into consideration as they draft legislation and policies.”

In Zimbabwe, the ACLJ, which bills itself as a conservative counterweight to the ACLU, is fighting to keep homosexuality illegal. The group has joined forces with Zimbabwe’s brutal dictator, Robert Mugabe, to codify national laws against homosexual behavior and same sex marriage, which were outlawed in 2006.

Amnesty International and other human rights groups have condemned Mugabe’s Zimbabwe as one of the most brutal and repressive regimes on earth, and yet Sekulow deputy Pastor Alex Chisango, director of the ACLJ’s Zimbabwe office, welcomed Mugabe and his advisors in a prayer meeting held in 2010 to kick off the country’s constitutional reform effort. The ACLJ wanted to be on the ground to ensure that as Zimbabwe and other developing nations in Africa democratize and grow, homosexuality and same sex marriage will remain illegal, as well as all forms of abortion, even when the life of the mother is threatened.

Sekulow and his son were at Romney’s side for his failed bid for the GOP nomination in 2008 and once again proclaimed their support for the former governor this year, endorsing him in January.

Romney has pledged for his part to work with the Sekulows and ACLJ to “bring conservative change to Washington,” a promise that belies the candidate’s rush to the center as evinced since the first presidential debate in Denver.

Doocy recalled that during a telethon for 2005 Hurricane Katrina, singer Kayne West had declared that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

“How is NBC going to control what the people say?” the Fox News host wondered.

Here's an idea: maybe Faux News can go on down to Wallmart and buy up all the cans of corn and granola bars host their own benefit program, after the election, and invite noted musicians Meatloaf, Dave Mustaine, Big & Rich, Hank Williams Jr and whoever else to perform.

If you tell people that Sandy is partially due to climate change resulting from anthropogenic global warming then you're a left-wing loony.

If instead you say that Sandy is the judgement of a righteous God for America allowing homosexuality, then you are perfectly sane.

...this country is well and truly fucked in the head. :(

Well...it's a bit of folklore, but within the LDS community it not given any official sanction or credence. While Joseph Smith did prophecy, the White Horse Prophecy is only known from secondary accounts, and thus its authenticity is debated. It's current attention isn't endorsed the LDS elders, and they've specifically issued statements about being politically neutral, and that the weight of their office is not set behind the current round of speculation.

Which is a long way to say it's a floating concept that's been appropriated by people who want God behind their political agenda, and not reflective of the LDS as a whole.

Mitt lets Putin know he's just kidding about all the "Russia is the enemy" stuff

Mr. Romney’s trip a week before the presidential election underscored the complex relationship between his family’s business and the political campaign. Mitt Romney has criticized President Obama for being too soft on Russia, calling it “our No. 1 geopolitical foe” and promising to confront President Vladimir V. Putin’s government with “more backbone” if elected on Tuesday.
...
But while in Moscow, Mr. Romney told a Russian known to be able to deliver messages to Mr. Putin that despite the campaign rhetoric, his father wants good relations if he becomes president, according to a person informed about the conversation.

Matt Romney traveled to Moscow with Gary B. Sabin, the chairman and chief executive of Excel Trust, which is based in San Diego. Greg Davis, the firm’s vice president of capital markets and communications, said the trip was unrelated to the campaign.

That's Matt, not Mitt. Still, it's crazy. He lets his son, a person he identified as a known liar, go hang with America's worst enemy, right before the election. WTF?

The Russians probably kidnapped him and brainwashed him so that they will have a deep cover spy inside the White House and right inside the First Family! Oh ma Gawd!

The woods are lovely dark and deep
but you have promises to keep
and miles to go before you sleep
remember Matt, miles to go before you sleep...

This makes me think that he'll be real chummy with the Chinese too and cosign on their human rights abuses despite his anti-China rhetoric.

You gotta love Fox though. Mitt can have a rally in Ohio that includes John McCain bitching at Obama and it's just great. But two rock stars from New Jersey who happen to be supporters of the president having a benefit for the victims. IT"S A SECRET OBAMA CAMPAIGN RALLY. Bunch of fucking morons Rupert Murdock and Roger Ailles have over at Fox.

They're not morons, they're partisan scum.

There's a difference.

That was Shepard Smith. He flipped his shit during an on-air segment with Hannity, IIRC.

Shep's from Mississippi, so Katrina was personal for him.

Shep's probably the best egg they got there. I still remember when Joe the idiot err plumber and now prospective Congressman tried making claims about Obama and foreign policy and Shep had to kindly tell him he was out of his fucking element.

Screw the Red Cross. Screw the victims of Sandy. We must prevent President Obama from getting any positive press at any cost.

I'm making a mental note to watch Fox & Friends on Wednesday morning if President Obama manages to hold off Mitt Romney on Tuesday...just to see their splodey-heads.

I think we should have a splody-heads party. WOOT! PAR-TAY!
