US Officials Refute Right Wing Conspiracy Theories About Benghazi Attack

As the insanity reaches fever pitch
Politics • Views: 42,283

The LA Times has a detailed look at the crazed conspiracy theories pouring out of the right wing and Fox News about the Benghazi attack — and the truth, which bears no resemblance to the wingnuts’ increasingly bizarre fever dreams: U.S. Officials Counter Criticism in Benghazi Attack.

Last week, Fox News alleged that CIA managers told security officials at an agency facility known as the Annex — which was a mile from the State Department compound in Benghazi — not to go to the aid of their American counterparts when the diplomatic buildings first came under attack. Fox said the team was delayed an hour before going to help, in contravention of orders. Ambassador Stevens and computer technician Sean Smith were killed when attackers set fire to the compound.

The Fox report also alleged that, hours later, when the Annex itself was under attack, officials in the CIA chain of command refused to pass along requests for military assistance. And it said that one of the CIA security officers had laser sights pointed at some of the attackers that could have allowed them to be targeted by a precision bomb. Two CIA security officers, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, were killed when mortar rounds struck their position on the roof of the Annex.

In fact, CIA security officers responded to the attack on the State Department compound within 25 minutes, U.S. officials said, though it took them 50 minutes to arrive. CIA officers did not have laser targeting equipment, they said.

And Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta “ordered all appropriate forces to respond to the unfolding events in Benghazi, but the attack was over before those forces could be employed,” said Little, the Pentagon spokesman.

“There were no orders to anybody to stand down in providing support,” a senior intelligence official said.

Armed drones were not nearby. Even if they had been, it’s not clear that they would have done any good, officials say.

“People think ‘armed drones’ are some sort of magical robot wizards that can materialize out of thin air and identify a terrorist through facial recognition software from 20,000 feet,” a senior congressional official said. “It doesn’t work like that.”

At least someone in the MSM is starting to grow a spine and challenge Fox on their bullshit. It's basically shouting in the wind, but at least it's out there.

I cannot remember for the life of me a time when, after a tragedy like this, one political party savagely attacked the president based on absolutely nothing. It seems unprecedented to me.

Doesn't matter. By now they've already got all their crazy theories out there, and they're self-sustaining. The damage is already done. The narrative that Obama screwed it up, and then tried to cover his tracks, is already part of the rightwing collective unconscious, and any evidence that runs counter to that narrative will just be more proof that the MSM is in the tank for Obama.

I've seen a couple articles this week on Benghazi, each making it more and more clear that the Wingnut fantasy of the C130 gunship flying to the rescue if only Obama would have given the word is just crazy. But each one I read reminds me of the kid in 'Aliens' when Ripley tells her 'These Marines are pretty tough' -

"It won't make any difference."

How Many GOP Voters Harping on Benghazi Know There were 11 Such Attacks in Eight Years Before Obama?

It’s also unprecedented. Has a major political party ever used something like a terrorist attack on a US Embassy as a political football, and use it to gain political power? Such a thing used to be unthinkable. Even after the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington in 2001, we saw Bush's approval ratings go into the 90s, and everyone supported the guy. That is how you react to a national tragedy.

There were very real reasons for that harsh criticism of Reagan, though. The guards at the Marine barracks were ordered to keep their weapons unloaded, and the truck was able to get through two sentry posts and all the way to the main entrance without resistance.

That was a real scandal. In fact, the US presence in Lebanon was incredibly badly planned from the start, and after the bombing Reagan did almost nothing in response.

Those are real criticisms, not the same thing as the deranged fantasies about Benghazi.

FOX creates their own reality and half the country buys it. They know exactly what they are doing.

If there was enough time between now and the election FOX would also start to create a narrative that Sandy is Obama's Katrina. If you check on FoxNation they are already doing this. Too bad for FOX though, the election is 2 days away and there is not enough time for them to run another propaganda narrative against the President.

That's key. I finally had it out the other day with a FB acquaintance who posted a cartoon of Obama sympathizing/working with the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Queda. And this is 18 months after Obama gave the order to take out Bin Laden.

The amount of energy that it's taking to sustain this paranoia of Obama, in complete disregard to reality, is staggering. Between the radicals running the show, and the "moderates' enabling them, the GOP has a long, long rehabilitation ahead of them.

Assuming they think there's a problem. They currently don't, and if the election is as close as they media wants it to be, the GOP will just keep up with the batshitty-ness.

Akin was Arrested at Least Eight Times in 1980s

Akin was arrested on October 26, 1985, April 19, 1986 and February 28, 1987 for trespassing. A December, 27 1986 arrest was for "trespassing and peace disturbance." The arrests reported by the Post-Dispatch came in the same period, between March 1985 and May 1987, but occurred at other clinics. Three were in St. Louis and one in Granite City, Illinois. The paper said protesters tried to block access to the clinics and refused to leave. In one case, Akin was carried out by police. The last known arrest came shortly before Akin's 1988 election to the Missouri State House, where he served for 12 years before he joined the House.

Akin was arrested with members of an anti-abortion group later taken over by Tim Dreste, who pushed aggressive action against abortion clinics and was arrested hundreds of times at anti-abortion protests. In one case Dreste held a sign referencing a doctor in Florida who was murdered by protestors. In 1993 Akin contributed to Dreste's longshot state house campaign. After Dreste started a militia group, Akin was listed as a speaker at a 1995 rally held not long before the bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City, though he apparently did not address the rally.

Not once, not twice. Eight times. At least. And he's probably still going to get 45% of the vote because his religion is violating property rights.

CBS, still pushing the horse race:

Nationally and in swing states, Obama, Romney still neck-and-neck

In the final days before Election Day, polls continue to show the presidential race is about as close as it can get, with Mitt Romney and President Obama in a statistical tie nationally in a new Washington Post-ABC News tracking poll.

"Statistical" - oohhh, so ... sciency.

The GOP nominee's 49-48 percent edge, in a poll taken among likely voters from Oct. 29 to Nov. 1, is an exact flip-flop from one day earlier, when the president held the one-point advantage. Perhaps most telling, independent support for Romney jumped two percentage points between surveys, with 51 percent of the critical voting bloc favoring him over Mr. Obama in the most recent poll.

[...]

Meanwhile, in Ohio - one of the most contested battleground states where the two candidates have spent much of their final days campaigning - a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll shows President Obama leading by six points, 51 to 45 percent, among likely voters, and seven points, 51 to 44 percent, among registered voters. In both groups, only one percent of voters say they still may change their minds.

A CNN/Opinion Research Center International poll also has Mr. Obama up in the Buckeye State, but only by three points - 50 percent to 47 percent - which is within the survey's margin of error.

So, by "polling" Obama has a strong lead in Ohio, in two polls. And by most everyone's reckoning, if Romney can't win Ohio he just won't win.

But the headline says "Nationally and in swing states, Obama, Romney still neck-and-neck"

Yes, "neck and neck", just like a horse race.

But, they said swing states, so certainly the article contains info about the other 8 or 9 such states, no?

NO, just Florida:

In Florida, another key swing state, polls indicate an even tighter race. A new Mason-Dixon poll puts Romney at a relatively comfortable six-point lead in the state which the president won in 2008 and which the Tampa Bay Times calls "essential to [Romney's] hopes of defeating" Mr. Obama. But the NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll shows President Obama up by two points among likely voters, 49 percent to 47 percent, and three points among registered voters, 49 percent to 46 percent.

And even there the article gives example to two conflicting polls.

Yet the candidates are "neck and neck".

Yeah, really.

The AP is claiming after the election the House will be "little different" than it is today:

GOP likely to hold House after $1B campaign

You can do a lot with a billion dollars - but still not change much. This Election Day, it's likely to produce another Republican-led House that's little different from the existing version.

Candidates, both political parties and hordes of corporate, labor, ideological and other groups have spent a record $1.1 billion on House races since this campaign cycle began last year, according to data compiled by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. Yet by the time the last votes are counted Tuesday, Democrats may pick up a handful of districts but are widely expected to miss their goal of gaining the 25 additional seats they need to grab control of the chamber.

nothing i think could be a clearer indication that wingnuts are feeling the cold chill than articles like this (from townhall via freeperville)

Six Reasons for Final Weekend Optimism

the very name cries out "whistling in the dark"

(1) Peerless human political encyclopedia Michael Barone believes Mitt Romney will win

(2) Jay Cost, an extremely savvy analyst of polling and election data, believes Romney is "likely to win."

(3) The Washington Post has updated its Congressional projections, now calling for House Republicans to roughly maintain their current majority margin in the next Congress

(4) WaPo also reports that their national polling indicates at least 13 percent of 2008 Obama voters are defecting to Romney this year. Ace runs some quick-and-dirty, back of the envelope calculations:

(5) Yesterday I reported that Jim Geraghty's top source (code name: "Middle Cheese") says internal data shows Romney looking solid in Florida, Virginia and Colorado

(6) Finally, we keep hearing the 'turnout and enthusiasm' mantra from the commentariat

shorter townhall:
1. you can read articles stating that romney will win
2. the polls all overcount democrats
3. i refuse to believe that romney will lose. if in doubt, goto 1

LOL at the goto loop.

Part of me, the conspiratorial part, thinks that the GOP strategists' #1 goal has been to hold up as many electoral votes as possible in court battles, battles that have conveniently arisen due to the influx of all these voter ID laws the past couple of years.

It's rather transparent in its dishonesty because a) it's being done by Republican controlled states and b) it's being done primarily in swing states. They don't need to disenfranchise or even discourage many voters in the states to have work in their favor.

On my way home from the gym, I put on Fox news to hear what they were yammering about today..."voting for revenge" of course...they called in "former Governor and Fox contributor" Mark Sanford to help pile on, and whoever the dickhead hosting the show is, asked, "About this revenge comment? Have you ever heard such a thing?"

Sanford, to his credit, said, "I think this is all much ado about nothing. President Obama was responding to boos from the audience when he mentioned Mitt Romney's name and he said, "Don't boo, vote. Voting is the best revenge." In context, it makes perfect sense..." and he went on for another minute or two about how at the end of campaigns people at rallies are hyped up and will boo every time they hear the opponent's name.

The Fox host wasn't having any of it. He tried again, "Revenge? What has Mitt Romney done to them? (suddenly it's the Obama supporters seeking revenge) He doesn't hold any office...he's just a candidate...and a presidential candidate!" (let the beauty of that sink in for a sec)

Sanford repeated himself. "It's much ado about nothing, really. Mitt Romney shouldn't be using it as his closing message..." and then went on to talk about the economy in Republican terms...

After the commercial break, they went back to harping about Benghazi with John Bolton. Fucking idiots.

On Dec 21, 2012, Obama will have had a little over a month to stew in his humiliating, crushing and unexpected defeat at the hands of the American people.

He’ll still be Commander in Chief.

He’ll still have the nuclear ‘football’. Just sitting there. Staring at him. Taunting him. Daring him. Double-eaten-dog daring him…

Here's my Bullet List of Obama's things to do in the Last Days:

• Pardon all Gitmo "political" prisoners
• Release the Blind Sheik
• Declare all US lands with energy resources under them to be UN World Heritage Sites.
• Release the names, addresses and phone numbers of anyone, anywhere who has ever provided any intel to any American agent or agency.
• Declare all US patents and copyrights null and void (Based on their recent comments, FReepers TheZMan, GraceG; Utmost Certainty; muawiyah; Boogieman; publius911; SandwicheGuy; and especially gunslinger3 think this would be a terrific idea)
• Pardon all illegal aliens
• Allow anyone from any islamist country immediate unrestricted immigration to the US as a 'refugee", forbid background checks, grant them 5 years tax free status and a generous government stipend "to get their feet on the ground".
• Pardon everyone in his administration of all crimes they may have committed in the course of carrying out their mission.
• Create "The Office of the Former President"

(comments)

They will still take their 10 day Hawaii vacation and within a year, Hussein will be outed or will come out of the closet himself..

Christmas will no longer be a holiday/no longer recognized. First on the agenda.

Just have Romney send him a heads up Election Night after he concedes. “I will terminate any order you issue or any rule established by federal agencies between now and Inauguration Day the second after I’m sworn in.”

Positive aspects about a Romney win:

It will lay open the schism between the GOP base and establishment when Romney tries to ignore the vocal base and pursue anything other than their radical agenda

It could well take some serious erosion of basic women's and minority rights before people see just what is at stake, stop taking them for granted and become active in defending them.

When the economy really collapses, it will be with Mitt at the helm, slashing taxes and government spending full tilt.

I am really pressed to think of anything else at this point. Any other ideas out there?

re: #79 darthstar

All of the right wing talk radio is like that.

This is one thing about our culture that has manifested itself the past couple of decades - the capturing of much of AM radio stations (not otherwise dedicated to traffic or sports) by Clear Channel, Salem, and the like. And yes, Romney has ties to that that, being that Bain eventually became involved in Clear Channel.

As for cable TV, while Fox News may boast of their bigger viewership than CNN or MSNBC, it ought to be remembered that there are so many cable channels that when one company becomes a monopoly (as Fox News has with wingnuttery) those other outlets that are competing against each other for the rest of the audience will just end up with smaller pieces of the pie.

Yet FoxNews faithful viewership is still only about 1% of the US population, smaller than the sum of the hate radio listeners (though there is clearly an overlap.)

Just a few off the top of my head:

SCRANTON, Pa. — A jury convicted two Pennsylvania men Thursday of a federal hate crime in the fatal beating of an illegal Mexican immigrant, finding they attacked the man primarily out of hatred for Hispanics.

And in Maricopa County, AZ, home of Joe Arpaio and Trent Franks AZ-2:

re: #110 GeneJockey

From my perspective, the US has been tacking "rightward" since the 1980's, with even the Democratic party itself going along for the ride - e.g., the election of Clinton/Gore (both considered at the time among the more "moderate" of Democrats), and Clinton's subsequent "triangulation" on issues, which Obama has quietly adopted here and there.

So it surprises me not that the loonier, and more blatantly xenophobic, types feel more comfortable now coming out of their closet. And, with the semi-anonymity of the internet, they feel free to spew hatred.

re: #115 Targetpractice

I think historians will look upon this period in American history much like we look back at the pre-Civil War era: An increasingly divisive period marked by hyperpartisanship and industries all too eager to stoke it all to make a buck.

"Under the operation of that policy, that agitation has not only not ceased, but has constantly augmented. In my opinion, it will not cease until a crises shall have been reached and passed. "A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe this government cannot endure permanently half lies and half reality. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved -- I do not expect the house to fall -- but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other. Either the opponents of lies will arrest the further spread of them, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that they are in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push them forward till they shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new, North as well as South."

163 kirkspencer  Sat, Nov 3, 2012 4:19:28pm

y'know, I think I'm going to introduce my own little nightmare. Not a page, as I don't want to drag too many souls into the same vision. But for the few on this list, a bit of night sweats.

The word is assassination. Keep it in mind while I progress.

Obama is going to win Tuesday's election. Of that I have no doubt. The problem is, you see, that he doesn't win on Tuesday. On Tuesday we elect a slate of electors to the college.

On the Monday after the second Wednesday of December, they cast their respective votes. The votes are cast in duplicate, with on set kept in the state and the other sent to Congress. The votes for the president go to an office in the House, and those for the vice president go to the Senate.

Now if Obama were to be assassinated any day prior to Monday, December 17, the electors would be free to select anyone else in the US, subject only to restrictions imposed by their respective states. It would still be chaos, but it's reasonable to expect that they'd go with Biden. Still, it's possible that the full 270+ would not do so, and we'd see Obama and Biden and Romney and maybe a Hillary. Hold that thought a moment.

If the assassination occurs after the votes are cast but before the votes are counted on the day of the first meeting of the new Congress (January 3) then the votes are left alone. In that case they'll be almost entirely Obama and Romney.

Enter the fun. Constitutionally, if a person on the electoral votes cannot be counted, his votes are not considered. If nobody has the required 270+ votes, then it goes to the house.

The house votes - by state - between the (up to) three highest remaining electoral vote recipients. That's Romney, with the slightest possibility of a protest vote from an elector giving an alternative choice.

Getting chills yet?

Now a bit more detail. The vote of a state is made by a 2/3 majority of the state's representatives. Not the senators, just the house. Which means there are a few "red" states which aren't automatically going to vote for Romney. If that happens there is no president, the Vice President fills the role as "acting" (as though the president were temporarily incapacitated) until March 4. On that day the Vice President becomes President.

I remember the artificially induced panic and screaming of 2000. There was a system in place. There was a process in progress. And it all got short-circuited by the Supreme Court (something for which I will never forgive any of them, because they CIRCUMVENTED THE CONSTITUTION. But I digress.)

The thing is, remembering that I can just imagine what things would be like with Romney receiving only 23 or so states in the House, and Biden running things.

Sleep well.

LOL at RealClearPolitics.

On the national polls, they've kept the starting date of their polling range on the 22nd for about 4 days now. Why? Because that's when Gallup's last poll started, and it has Romney up by 5. If they only used polls from the last 7-10 days like they normally do, Obama's lead would be about 1%, as opposed to the 0.1% they show right now.

On the state polls, I've heard them rationalize their idiotic decisions to consider states like Pennsylvania and Michigan as "toss-ups" by saying they automatically call states toss-ups when the average lead is less than 5%.

Right now, Obama's average lead in Wisconsin? 5.4%. Yet Wisconsin is still called a "toss-up."

See New York Magazine’s Arresting Sandy Cover [PIC]

The city that never sleeps shrouded in darkness: It’s something that was unfathomable to New Yorkers until last week. When Hurricane Sandy hit the U.S. Northeast hard Monday night, many were left without power, food, water and gas. Over the past week, Americans united to provide each other with support, distributing help where it was needed the most. Out of the darkness, people saw hope and neighborly kindness.

Images of Sandy’s destruction and subsequent tranquility captivated social media users everywhere. Indeed, fake photos and fake news was shared on Twitter.

But New York Magazine‘s cover for this coming Monday, released early on Facebook, trumps all that we’ve seen — and it’s legitimate. Taken Wednesday night by photographer Iwan Baan, it depicts all of Manhattan from the mostly darkened downtown to the oasis of light north of 34th Street. Here’s to those who made it through, and to those who continue to volunteer.

Parsing the early vote: Who's winning?

With more than 27 million Americans having already voted, the Obama and Romney campaigns have found a new topic for disagreement: what do the numbers say about who is winning?

That's around 20% of the total.

Has the election already been decided? If so, why should I show up to vote?

A Methodology for Assessing the Impact of Sea Level Rise on Representative Military Installations in the Southwestern U.S.
U.S. Navy

Climate change has potential ramifications for national security, as recognized in recent legislation that directs the Department of Defense (DoD) to provide guidance to military planners to assess the risks of potential climate change. A recent study directed by a board of senior retired military officers also recommended that the DoD conduct assessments of the impact on United States military installations of rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and other projected climate change impacts over the next 30 to 40 years.

Continues.

Navy Charts Way Ahead in Arctic

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The chief of naval operations created a task force, headed by the Navy's senior oceanographer, to better understand and evaluate the changing climate and its implications for maritime security.

"Task Force Climate Change was initiated ... to assess the Navy's preparedness to respond to emerging requirements and to develop a science-based time line for future Navy actions regarding climate change," explained Rear Adm. David Titley, Navy oceanographer in a July 28 interview on Pentagon Web Radio's audio Web cast, "Armed with Science: Research and Applications for the Modern Military."

...

Global climate change may present many challenges to national security, Titley said. Rising sea levels from the melting of glacial and sea ice are of specific interest to the Navy due to the coastal location of many of its bases.

"We need to understand what it will take to protect these valuable investments," he said.

...

Climate Change On Navy's Radar

ATLANTA, Ga. (NNS) -- The director of the U.S. Navy's Task Force Climate Change (TFCC) said the earth is truly experiencing a climate change and the Navy needs to be prepared for potential impacts on its mission areas.

Oceanographer and Navigator of the Navy and TFCC Director Rear Adm. David Titley made his remarks as part of a panel discussion on environmental security and climate change at the annual meeting of the American Meteorological Society in Atlanta last month.

The Task Force makes recommendations to Navy leadership regarding policy, strategy, force structure and investments relating to climate change. Of immediate interest is the Navy's investment in observation and prediction capabilities.

My take is this - Prop 30 (a temporary raise in top tax rates) only exists because the California Assembly refuses to bite the bullet and make the hard choices of raising taxes or actually cutting some government services (such as higher education.) So the Governor and his supporters go the Proposition route. But that is simply admitting failure on the part of the elected Representatives to do their jobs, which they refuse to do because they don't want to be blamed by this or that group.

I think Iowa had a hand in turning the Republican Party into what it has become.

Having an early caucus wasn't enough, Iowa had to fuck the GOP up further with the even earlier Ames Straw Poll. The Straw Poll is some weird brand of ridiculous scam. It awards no delegates, has zero significance to the nominating convention, is designed to be gamed as candidates buss in as many of their supporters as possible and pay the attendance fee for them. The whole thing is basically just a county fair, complete with bar-b-q and fried everything that just replaced its hog judging competition with GOP candidates.

We need... Actually, what I'd like to see is the primaries be wholly funded by the party(ies) for which it's being run. With the caveat that no state or local issue shall be also decided on a primary ballot.

There are massive benefits, both financial and operational, in having the governments pick up the tab and provide a significant portion of the labor. There are also significant psychological and sociological benefits to the 'official' tag of being included on STATE forms with state and local issues. Think not? In most states the primaries for the green, libertarian, constitution, and a host of third parties do not appear on the state-printed ballot.

It's not the only clean-up I want, but I think in the end it would be one of the most significant.

Good evening Lizards.

Back in Philly after driving up into north NJ today with my friends to look over their place. Mud all over the first floor, everything damp and moldering, and mud line showing "high water" about 3-4' up the wall.

We got some of the electronics out, extra clothes, and cleaned all the spoiled food out of the fridge. Place is basically uninhabitable - furnace and water heater sat in water for two days, and the township won't turn on power (assuming it's available) without a receipt indicating that a professional inspected and cleaned the devices. With no heat they won't move back in due to their 4-year-old child. So they're looking for another place to live in at least temporarily, keeping the dog boarded, and waiting for the insurance adjustors to show. After that they can start throwing out ruined furniture and making further decisions.

Part of the morning was finding and stopping at the county clerk's office for them to fill out absentee ballots. The county office (Monmouth) had relocated due to power issues, but they handled the line well and it only took them about 30 minutes.

Driving around up there had lots of small detours and delays. Roads blocked off due to trees down or purposeful closure of lanes for safety and traffic control due to no power for signals (NJ 36 in particular). Plus gas lines in various places snarling traffic as well. People were being pretty patient and upbeat from what I saw.

We also walked over to the beach near the house and found where the storm surge had cut through the dunes. A 6' dune was pretty much chopped in half with a huge gap eroded in it - I will post a picture or two tomorrow once I download stuff off the iphone.

If you see some of the dynamically updated features of LGF acting a little weird, don't panic. I'm in the middle of a complete rewrite of the 5-second repeating script that drives those features (like the New Comments counter and the latest comment popups on the front page). And there will be testing. Oh yes, there will be testing.

Let me know if you need help testing. That's one of the things I do (I write functional design specs and PQ docs, too.)
