Why I’m Voting Against Mitt Romney

Tomorrow I’ll tell you why I am voting FOR President Obama
Opinion • Views: 41,055

There are many reasons I’m voting Democrat this election but prime among them is that Mitt Romney has no core, no soul, no integrity. There are many words that you would never apply to him after his several years of unsuccessful campaigning, but chief among them are the words “courageous,” “consistent,” “principled,” “honest,” and least of all “caring.”

Instead you can see him lie every day, blandly smiling and glad-handing the crowds as he puts another baldfaced whopper across. You have to wonder if he’s chuckling inside and thinking, “I wonder how many of these hapless rubes bought that one.”

There’s nothing worse than frat boy weasels who lie to your face knowing that they are lying, knowing full well that you see through their lie. It doesn’t matter if they are trying to sell a junker off a used car lot or running for president, most people can smell them coming — but others seem defenseless against their toothsome grins. Anytime that Mitt has seemed to say something solid on the campaign trail, the next day he sends his staff out to walk it back, since he seems not to have the spine required to retract it in person, or to stand for something specific himself.

Maybe you’ve been willing to accept the lies because Romney’s a “member of the GOP team,” or because you hate our current President — but politics is not a sport, and you need to be bigger than just a rooter for your team. The US can’t afford another second generation elitist sliming their way into office, not here, not now, as the economy is just recovering from the worst recession since the great depression. We don’t need more of the same deregulation, the same laissez faire, “who cares about all those bad loans” attitudes at the helm. We certainly don’t need a president who has so little faith in our country that he off-shores most of his money made after years of off-shoring our jobs and dumping insolvent and Bain debt-saddled companies into bankruptcy.

Almost worse than Romney are the people who would come into power with himWe don’t need a president who thinks 47 percent of us don’t matter, because the president is elected to serve everyone, not just the people who financed their campaign or who voted for them.

Almost worse than Romney are the people who would come into power with him, as the reactionary fundamentalist wing of the party is in full control of the GOP right now. With Mitt, we would get people from the clash of civilizations crowd (like John Bolton), who won’t rest until they get us into another world economy-wrecking war. Anti-science blustering blowhards for the oil companies and religious right, like Joe Barton and Todd Akin, are clinging tightly to his coat tails, and we sure don’t need “strict Bible constructionists” on the Supreme Court either.

We really can’t afford another anti-science administration — the world is changing much too fast and our children’s futures are entirely dependent our ability to adapt and foster new technologies. Mitt would bring a whole crowd of reactionary Luddites with him.

I can’t vote for Mitt as well because of his stance on gay marriage, I can’t vote for him because of his stance against women’s rights, I can’t vote for him because of all the misogynist cavemen that he would bring with him were he to win. And I can’t vote for him because there’s a chance that the Senate could flip this year, and I think we need checks and balances. The GOP in full control of all branches of government is the prime ingredient in a recipe for future disasters.

Most of all, I can’t vote for Mitt because there’s nothing behind the bluster and puff: he’s just a spoiled pile of meringue whipped together from bile and the last century’s GOP bumper stickers.

I don't agree with everything here but you do make a good case.

Romney is a less than desirable candidate.

The GOP has a long way to go if he is the best they've got.

2 goddamnedfrank  Sat, Nov 3, 2012 6:22:26pm

So who is voting for Romney? I'd love to hear those guys make that case.

3 Charles Johnson  Sat, Nov 3, 2012 6:27:41pm

Promoted! Great post, Randall.

4 Obdicut  Sat, Nov 3, 2012 6:29:19pm

Basically the same for me. Romney has three strikes against him that each individually would make him reprehensible.

1. He'd be 'delighted' to ban all abortion in the US. He'll appoint SC judges that feel the same way.

2. He thinks corporations are people. Capitalism only works with significant government regulation. He's drunk the Ayn Rand juice.

3. He's anti-science in a number of areas. Jabbering about cold fusion? Saying it's not his duty to help stem AGW? Etc. etc. Science is the wellspring of prosperity, not to mention military dominance. The US cannot take another anti-science presidency. We have already lost serious ground to Europe and Japan. We cannot afford more.

Why I'm Voting Against Romney

which one?

6 goddamnedfrank  Sat, Nov 3, 2012 6:34:18pm

On the same theme here's my post from a couple of days ago:

For me this election boils down to two incredibly basic value issues:

1.) Integrity. Even Romney's staunchest supporter here admits he's a liar who stands for nothing but his own desire to be President. I don't understand how anybody could think a person with no personal integrity should hold that office, the entire idea is just completely anathema to how I view the entire concept and purpose of leadership. If the guy can't be trusted then it's impossible for anybody who holds honesty to be a bedrock value to vote for him.

2.) A fundamental question of civil rights and equality. Even if you don't know many gays there's no excuse for opposing marriage equality. Even if you don't have any real insight into how women think there's no excuse for believing they shouldn't be able to make their own health decisions, be able to control their own bodies, or be paid the same for performing the same job. To my mind this is simply fundamental Golden Rule shit that a decent human being would never even think of compromising. Especially not for some transparently bullshit voodoo economics confidence scam.

7 engineer cat  Sat, Nov 3, 2012 6:40:31pm

i'll give romney this:

until his umpteenth transformation at the first debate, romney campaigned unashamedly and proudly on the raw survival-of-the-greediest philosophy that all the other r candidates starting with reagan have soft pedalled and concealed

it wasn't until it became pellucidly obvious how unpopular the reality of republican governing philosophy really is with americans that mitt was instructed to impersonate a moderate

8 funky chicken  Sat, Nov 3, 2012 6:41:05pm

Excellent writing, and 100% agreement on all points from me. I'm shocked so many people will vote for him, especially because of this:

We cerrtainly don’t need a president who has so little faith in our country that he off-shores most of his money made after years of off-shoring our jobs and dumping insolvent and Bain debt-saddled companies into bankruptcy.

I honestly don't get it.

9 SteelGHAZI  Sat, Nov 3, 2012 6:41:09pm

Prior to his campaign, Romney wasn't much more than a simple blip on the radar for me. But the more and more he exposed himself to the public, the less and less I liked him.

I've never seen a campaign like this before, it's surreal.

10 garhighway  Sat, Nov 3, 2012 6:41:28pm

The funny thing is that I suspect he really doesn't buy into a lot of the vile positions he's taken in the last few years. but who can tell? Why risk it?

re: #8 funky chicken

That continues to puzzle me too, given the jingoism of some of his most rabid supporters.

The compulsively lying about personal achievements, personhood-fetishist, worst-of-Ayn-Rand-and-the-Old-Testament-believing, not-at-all-bold-or-serious non-wonk who crapped out a budget plan based on invisible unicorns as vice president also bears mentioning.

13 Decatur Deb  Sat, Nov 3, 2012 6:45:19pm

I was born not to vote for Mitt Romney, unconcieved as he was. My great-grandparents migrated to this country from Ireland so they could have a descendant who would vote against Mitt Romney. 13 nuns and a one-legged Army sergeant spent every waking minute teaching me not to vote for Mitt Romney.

(In truth I'm not voting against Mitt Romney at all, just the reactionary bullshit he is fronting in this generation.)

Edited for accuracy. A good number of people I know are voting for Romney primarily because they do not like Obama and not because they specifically favor Romney.

What's disappointing to me is that the GOP had the chance to run a really good campaign against Obama and they made a mess of it. I'm just astounded at the long list of failures by the supposedly professional campaign advisers employed by Romney. I don't think I've ever before seen a campaign have such difficulty getting their act together.

I truly believe if Obama was white, Mitt would be going down in flames.

17 Bubblehead II  Sat, Nov 3, 2012 6:54:16pm

Bottom line. Why I am not voting for Mitt?

He is a dick.

He wants to fuck me over any way he can and doesn't care if I get any pleasure from it. Nor will He use any protection.

Hey! If I get pregnant or a STD, To bad. I must of being asking for it.

I have read, but not posted. I post now to say that you have hit every point that drives my vote. I have really tried to be open this election. I want what is best for this nation, which honestly means whats best for my family. I can't buy what Mitt is selling; its like trying to by a use car with out looking at it, test driving it, or researching it. "Just buy it, its a fair price". With Obama, I see that we will continue to grow back, we are clearly on the road to recovery, and without more information I am not going to give it all to some guy who says " trust me".

27 Majacita  Sat, Nov 3, 2012 7:09:12pm

I am actually voting for Obama. I voted for Reagan, Bush Sr, and then second term Clinton, because Bob Dole?, and then for Gore, because I knew what W
Bush was as I had activist friends in Texas. I voted against Bush in 04, although I didn't like Kerry at all. I hesitated over McCain and Obama because I liked both men, but couldn't stomach Palin. So I have voted both for and against candidates of both parties. But I find myself supporting Obama in a way I never did any other president. I really do trust him, which I never did any president before. I think he really does care about the country and its people and is doing his best. I think his best is pretty damn good. I find myself being proud of our president in a way I never felt before. He's one of the people and I don't feel taken for granted and I don't feel conned.

28 Gus  Sat, Nov 3, 2012 7:09:19pm

Why I'm not voting for Mitt Romney.

1. Will nominate conservative judges. Most concerning being SCOTUS.
2. Wants to overturn Roe v. Wade.
3. Wants to defund Planned Parenthood.
4. Wants to overturn Title X.
5. Wants a amndt. defining marriage as between a man and woman.
6. Would enforces/strengthen DOMA.
7. Wants a bloated military.
8. A return to the Mexico City Policy.
9. A return of abstinence only education.
10. Creationist friendly education policies.
11. Social conservatives in the White House.
12. Makes not even a consideration for AGW.
13. Bad for science, stem cell research, etc.
14. Bad for CAFE standards.
...

I can keep going.

What Would a Romney Victory Mean for the Environment?

"Greenhouse gas emission regulations would be halted. Romney now treats climate change as a punchline, despite the fact that he at least pretended to care about it as governor of Massachusetts. Thus, he doesn't see a reason that the EPA should be regulating carbon dioxide emissions at all. "I exhale carbon dioxide," he joked at an event last November. (b) Vote or refrain from voting for any particular individual or ballot measure;

And:

It is unlawful for any person having one or more persons in his or her service as employees to discharge or threaten to discharge any employee in his or her service for voting or not voting in any election, state, county, or municipal, for any candidate or measure submitted to a vote of the people. Any person who violates the provisions of this section is guilty of a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084.

I'd like to say that I cannot believe that Romney actually encouraged small business owners to coerce their employees into voting the way they want, but it's actually totally in character for that elitist piece of dogshit.

1) Unchallenged bigotry. It's a indisputable fact that his candidacy has been deriving much of his support from cultural atavism. We have seen the incredible spectacle of Donald Trump positioning himself as a proxy for the campaign while he spreads mistruths about Obama's birth certificate. No pushback.

This is basic civics. The silence is deafening.

2) An almost complete disregard to basic science in the public sphere, and the embrace of religious ideologues: Akin is case in point. An enthusiastic home school supporter with ties to the far-right militia movement. The Republican Party has embraced an environmental policy dictated by cronyism and the spread of uncertainty. With these degraded standards, creationism has ceased to be an issue

3) A monetary policy that would tax working people at a rate greater than his proposed capital gains tax (0%!) It not only makes a mockery of meritocracy but eschews the the value of labor, the very thing the American economy is built on.

A bunch of white people here in Texas. Deluded Faux News viewers. Idiots who think that if they support the "job creators" they'll somehow magically join the billionaire's club. Religious fanatics who think David Barton is a smart guy and that Darwin is the devil.

That's why I said "if". I doubt anybody who is already over 65 will be running in 2016. Having said that, whatever happens the Obamas and the Clintons are on good terms and that speaks very well for what both of these families can do post presidency.

After Obama serves his second term (I refuse to allow he and Michelle to go home to Chicago before January 20, 2017) I look forward to his post presidency. He will be in a position to do some amazing things both here in the US and globally and so will she.

We could have an embarrassment of riches like we did back in 2008. I wrote this in under 15 minutes, and here's something I forgot to include:

Romney would create market instability -- he's already threatened to fire Bernanke, drastically change tax structure, and to kill Obamacare. His election would empower a fiscal cliff diving congressional faction that's already dogpiled on top of the US recovery to hinder it for political gain. His tax and fiscal policy is both misguided and murky - all of the above would sow uncertainty and create great instability to a slowly recovering economy.

156 nines09  Sun, Nov 4, 2012 12:46:54pm

Mitt Romney puts the "eaze" in "sleaze". He's the sheen on the top of the cesspool currently called the GOP.
