Looking forward to tomorrow's polling results. Those are the ones that count.

He seems to be factoring each last-minute poll (and there's a lot of them) as they come in, probably running and re-running the simulations. So his prediction percentage is fluttering up and down around 90.5-92.5% depending when you refresh. I've seen both so far.

Charles P. Pierce:

....American politics has degenerated into a grubby, wretched business. American elections have become a staggering money-drunk mess reeling from one catastrophe to another, culminating in the Panamanian clusterfuck that has been unspooling down here over the last four days, and which will come to a cacophonous crescendo on Election Day, when, I guarantee you, something you absolutely did not think ever was possible here in the World's Greatest Democracy will come blundering out of the swamps and scrub pine to fascinate and horrify us all.
.......
Ultimately, though, there is no other answer to the asinine way we have come to elect a president in this country than to revive the creative spirit of self-government by sheer numbers, to build a political commonwealth the old-fashioned way, by having so many people pitch in on the job that the people trying to get us to give up on the process become broken and dispirited and abandon their own work in despair.

What I find interesting is no one really outside people with obvious right wing biases is picking Romney to win. That's telling to me. Also when I heard Mark McKinnon and Sam Wang(The Princeton polls dude who was only one EV off last time) talking on NPR on the way home from trivia tonight. Wang seemed much more confident in his predictions and McKinnon just seemed eager to claim that Sandy slowed Romney down and repeated the myth that Wang and Silver both have shown to be untrue that Romney had momentum. Wang conceded Romney had momentum after Denver but showed that he had not had it since the second and third debates.

Constitution. Don't underestimate his popularity in rural Virginia. I'm not suggesting he will even get one percent of the vote here but he could play a big enough role to spoil Virginia.

51 thecommodore  Mon, Nov 5, 2012 9:46:56pm

Obama has now made up all the ground he lost after the first debate and thenslme, and has two of the three states that were in Romney's column back in OBama's. He shows Florida sneaking in, but that may be too generous.

Everyone vote tomorrow. Eapecially if you're from my native Ohio. I fear tea party amd "true the vote" types will attempt hard core suppression. But I think Obama will win because the truth is on his side, and enough people realize what Romney will do to this country.

79 HappyWarrior  Mon, Nov 5, 2012 10:07:44pm

It really does feel like 2004 again but on the other side of things. I was certain that Bush would lose because there was no way that anyone that voted against Bush the first time would even consider voting for him a second. I was very wrong about that. I totally underestimated Bush's campaign the same way I think many Republicans underestimate Obama's ground game. They're right that they will have a higher turnout than in 2008 but they're also dead wrong if they think Dem turnout will be so low that they will be able to win especially win big in states that haven't gone Republican since 1988.

Well, he doesn't really "choose" to have the numbers this high. The model was built before the election and he feeds it data. Even if he thinks 92% is too high, his methodology wouldn't allow him to change it if he's playing it straight, which I think he is.

He also accurately predicted that the GOP would pick up 60 seats in the House back in 2010. Exactly. The spin I see from Republicans and right wingers is that turnout is going to be dramatically in their favor and I just don't see that. I don't deny that they're more enthusiastic than they were four years ago but as I learned in 2004 a base simply hating an opponent isn't enough.

They are more enthusiastic, but I don't see the evidence that Democrats aren't. I see lines with lots of people who don't look like Romney votes waiting to vote. They probably aren't "likely" voters either. And a lot of Democrats are plenty pissed about the last four years. I was just over at NBC and the wingnuts are making a concerted push to dominate the threads tonight. I saw the same old tired shit about Michelle hating America and Black Panthers blocking white people from voting in 2008 at least a hundred times. Sad that they can't even think up any new lies to tell...

Wingnuts seem to truly believe that winning the election comes down to freeping online polls and trolling comment sections 24/7.

They are more enthusiastic, but I don't see the evidence that Democrats aren't. I see lines with lots of people who don't look like Romney votes waiting to vote. They probably aren't "likely" voters either. And a lot of Democrats are plenty pissed about the last four years. This time we've got love for Obama (and Michelle and the kids and the dog) along with an extra dash of loathing for Romney and the GOP as well. I wasn't repulsed by John McCain. Yep. Really, I don't know if Dem turnout will be as high as it was four years ago but I do think the Dems will have a good turnout tomorrow.

Heh, Chambers seems to have come down a little. Now he's only got Romney winning by 275 electoral votes and 50.6% popular vote. He gave Ohio, Florida, Virginia, and Colorado to Romney to manage that.

For those who haven't kept track, that's down from his last prediction, which was 325 electoral votes and 51%+ of the popular vote. So even using "unskewed polls," he doesn't see a Romney "landslide" in the making.

That's mostly because Nate and Wang are putting their personal reputations on the line here. Given the odds they've projected for an Obama victory, if he should lose today, then they're pretty much discredited in perpetuum. They have a vested interest in producing predictions that they feel confident in.

I missed Nate on Colbert tonight but I caught a little of Dr. Wang on the way home tonight. He sounded very confident in what he was talking about. In contrast with the former Bush campaign aid they had on who sounded like he wanted to spin but even he could admit Obama had an advantage. A "Commentary" by Michael Barone at Rasmussen Reports (yes the polling guys).

Going Out on a Limb: Romney Beats Obama, Handily

Fundamentals usually prevail in American elections. That's bad news for Barack Obama. True, Americans want to think well of their presidents, and many think it would be bad if Americans were perceived as rejecting the first black president.

But it's also true that most voters oppose Obama's major policies and consider unsatisfactory the very sluggish economic recovery -- Friday's job report showed an unemployment uptick....

...Bottom line: Romney 315, Obama 223...

Harken back to 1948:

[...]

Wallace left his editorship position in 1948 to make an unsuccessful run as a Progressive Party candidate in the 1948 U.S. presidential election. With Idaho Democratic U.S. Senator Glen H. Taylor as his running mate, his platform advocated friendly relations with the Soviet Union, an end to the nascent Cold War, an end to segregation, full voting rights for blacks, and universal government health insurance. His campaign was unusual for his time in that it included African American candidates campaigning alongside white candidates in the American South, and that during the campaign he refused to appear before segregated audiences or eat or stay in segregated establishments.

[...]

Wallace suffered a decisive defeat in the election to the Democratic incumbent Harry S. Truman. He finished in fourth place with 2.4% of the popular vote. Dixiecrat presidential candidate Strom Thurmond outstripped Wallace in the popular vote. Thurmond managed to carry several states in the Deep South, gaining 39 electoral votes to Wallace's electoral total of zero.

And that explains why this years GOP nomination and campaign of Romney went like it did.

The greater disparity was on MSNBC, which gave Mr. Romney positive coverage just 3 percent of the time, Pew found. It examined 259 segments about Mr. Romney and found that 71 percent were negative.

OK fine, you tell me, what exactly is there is positive to report about Romney? That he is nicely dressed and very distinguished looking for a pandering pathological liar?

I just voted up a storm in that place. They were all like "What?" And I was like "Imma vote" and they said "Voter card?" and I'm like "Shit yeah voter card here" and then we high-fived and during the explosion I filled out my ballot and the scantron verified my votes and I was able to confirm the choices were correct. It was pretty rad.

Another nice thing is that in New York State the same candidate can appear under different parties. So I was able to vote the Working Families party and still vote for Obama et al.

According to the writer's metrics stories about Romney flip flopping are equivalent to Benghazi-gate. False narratives are equivalent to real stories. Not so brazen as a Big Lie, much more subtle and truthyish.

I used to be a bartender and waiter at two places owned by the same people. I'd work the Saturday double shift, opening the bar at noon and closing it down at 2:30-3 AM. Then I'd go home, crash, and be at the restaurant at 7:00 AM to start the prep work for brunch, then work there as the closer at midnight because the manager knew even if I was tired I'd close properly. Kinda sucked because there's basically no tips in those last couple of hours but it was worth it because the manager was a cool guy and it kept me on his good side.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I'm sure a whole lot of crazy stories are going to come out today about voter fraud and other such stuff, particularly in disaster-struck areas, but note that most of these reports will end up never being substantiated and are nothing more than attempts to sway votes.

I wont be watching news reports during the day other than those reporting on disaster recovery. NYC metro is very slowly getting back in gear, and mass transit is lurching ahead in fits and starts, especially in NJ.

NJ Transit has done a miserable job of restoring service, and the Port Authority has done even worse, though they'll claim that their equipment was even worse off due to the flooding. Tell that to the MTA, which got multiple lines up and running in less time than one could reasonably expect to happen when flood prevention isn't a priority in the system (and it should). South Ferry and several other Lower Manhattan stations are still shuttered, but there is service to Lower Manhattan.

There's no PATH to WTC or Hoboken, and no ETA on when that will be restored. They're talking unprecedented damage at both stations, plus other locations on the system. Maybe they need to talk to the MTA on how to get things cleared up. The MTA had more track and more flooding, and yet got things going again.

At the same time, NJ Transit can't handle the volume of passengers so they suspended service due to the crush of people yesterday on the rails. That's what you get when you get a 1/3 of the normal trains running and expect people to try and get around. Buses are overcrowded. Mrs. Lawhawk had to wait for 5 buses before she found one with a seat (standing when you face delays at the Lincoln tunnel could mean you're on your feet for an hour or more - on a bus that lurches this way and that - not exactly the safest thing). More bus service is needed, but the Port Authority Bus Terminal can't handle the existing load and it most certainly can't handle even more buses. That too is on the Port Authority.

So, as far as transit goes, NJ Transit and PATH are getting failing grades, while MTA is getting As across the board. It's light night and day, and Gov. Christie needs to deal with that accordingly.

Speaking of governors, I'd like to see Gov. Cuomo adopt the even-odd gas plan in NY to help alleviate the lines, which he also attributes to hoarding. Lines are substantially less in NJ, but not quite normal as power is still a major issue in large parts of the area. That's on the utilities to fix - and Gov. Cuomo has been slamming the utilities in NY for being slow especially outside Manhattan. Let's see that tough talk translate into more than just talk. Hold them accountable.

Sorry to hear that NJ is more messed up than NYC. The storm has shown the fragility of our infrastructure, and we should remember that this is the New Normal. This may have been an especially severe storm, but more is coming in the years ahead and we need to prepare.

As for voter fraud, there most concerning part is the actions of Ohio's sec of state in voter repression, and the True The Vote morons both planning voter intimidation and forging signatures.

This sort of analysis is driving conservatives to the edge with cries of conspiracy and liberal bias only because it does not fit their fantasy world view wherin Romney is leading huge. Silver could be right on with his predictions and they sttill will not be accepted. Funnyy thing is if the names were reversed the conservatives would be hailing Romney's chances and using Silvers analysis as rock solid proof of the dominance of Romney.

Good Morning Lizardia!

Cold this morning in Philadelphia - 30s!

Voted already. Took about 15 minutes of waiting in line with about 5 of those minutes indoors. I was 47th to vote in the precinct, and the senior citizens running the polling place were their normal and energetic selves.

A few observations:
1. They moved the actual polling place from the lobby of the apartment building into a vacant shop kiosk on the arcade. A bit more cramped for space, and the line going in and people going out have to fit through a single doorway of standard width. Plus the line length forced to wait outdoors is quite a bit longer than using the lobby.

2. Since this was before 8am most of the voters were people stopping to vote on the way to work. Younger crowd, and quite a few who are voting in this ward for the first time.

3. No one was asked for ID. That was because everyone brought it and already had it out and ready to go. Saw mainly DL, but also military ID, US passports, and even US passport cards used.

4. Saw four people not listed on the rolls and thus asked to step aside and fill out a provisional ballot. From the questions I overheard most of them registered on-line in the last month or so. Oddly enough the three black voters in line all ended up not being on the rolls. I think this was happenstance and not a sign of something systematic.

I hope everyone else who has not voted takes advantage to carry out their civic duty and no issues doing so.

(Oh, who did I vote for? The right candidate! :) )

There is a systemic reason why republicans support efforts to limit early voting and restrict online voting and registration. Just sayin'.

Yunno, sex was the least interesting part of our relationship, we just dug each other a lot, played music together, travelled, went hiking, running, did things in the house and garden together. I assumed the sex would get better over time. Not only did it fail to get any better, everything else ceased being fun, too...

Oh, and one more gripe on behalf of folks who still have no power or heat in the NYC metro area. It's frakking cold out. The power can't get restored fast enough.

I remember when Katrina hit, and there was a concern when the temps would drop into the 50s that people might suffer.

Hey, we're talking about the 20s here. It was in the mid-20s in Bergen County this morning. That's frakking cold for someone who doesn't have power in their home. It'll get real cold in a house with no power real quick. And that's if the house is intact; it'll be even colder in homes that have damage.

Apartments that lost power and got them back yesterday still arent out of the woods since it takes time for the heat to come back to comfortable levels - and ConEd in Manhattan isn't running steam to some areas as it tries to get things back.

DIXVILLE NOTCH, NH -
In the tiny town of Dixville Notch New Hampshire, the presidential vote ended in a historical first.
In a tradition that started more than 40 years ago. The town of ten registered voters all cast their ballots right after midnight on election day, and the results are tallied immediately.
This year, President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney each received five votes from Dixville Notch.

Given the water damage in the lower floor of my friend's rented duplex a drop below freezing for any period of time will do a pile of damage. Structural damage since the walls and such are still sodden and unheated.

I think they might have power back as of yesterday, but the furnace and water heater are still off since they got a salt water bath and have not been inspected yet (to their knowledge). They will be pestering the landlord for an update today among other things.

What goes over a lot of people's heads (I think) is how much additional stress events and conditions like this put on people. On top of the normal job, commute, child, pet, etc. etc. issues you suddenly get a pile of issues concerning basic living conditions and things one normally takes for granted (access to gas, heat, food) and also all the grief associated with handling insurance claims, repairs, modified routine, and making other adjustments.

With the additional stress of certain things being important but totally beyond one's control. (Thus one reason I'm doing all the cooking and otherwise helping out with my friends. They come back to my apartment from work or the 2-hour drive after going to the duplex to clean/salvage stuff and there is a hot meal on the table within a few minutes of their arrival.)

So, Nate's polling statistical analysis gives Obama the likely chance of winning reelection. And people are pissed at him for aggregating polls in a way that tries to reflect where people are at in voting preferences?

Oh wait, it's because the signs are pointing towards an Obama reelection, and not Romney's ascension despite the fact that Romney's positions have flipped and flopped worse than anything John Kerry was accused of in 2004.

Nothing is worse than his position on health care reform. He created the model on which the PPACA was based - Romneycare in MA, and now heads the party that wants to repeal it - all because it was a Democrat who got it enacted at the federal level. The individual mandate was something GOPers were pushing for, as opposed to single payer by Democrats. Obama conceded and included the individual mandate as a way to entice GOPers to come on board, but the GOP balked. They not only opposed the very policy that they sought for 20 years, but now claim the policy was unconstitutional.

It's just one microcosm of a larger problem with the GOP and Romney. I simply don't trust his character and judgment and Obama has gotten my trust, particularly in dealing with the ongoing threat from terrorism - going after and taking out AQ and OBL and Awlaki among others. Nothing that Obama has done re: Israel has undermined Israel's security. He hasn't forced Israel to make a deal that would undermine Israel's security. He's continued security arrangements and worked with Israel on Iron Dome among other things. He hasn't made a show of a peace process that can't move ahead because Israel doesn't have a partner in peace for a 2-state solution.

Domestically, Obama's being faulted for high unemployment though things could have gotten a whole lot worse if the stimulus package (the same package that GOPers were waiting in line to get for their home districts because no one wants to leave money on the table for someone else) hadn't gone through. It wasn't nearly targeted enough to encourage long term growth, but it kept the bottom from being so much worse.

It also allowed GM and Chrysler to emerge from bankruptcy reorganization in an orderly fashion at a time when private credit markets were not willing to lend.

It's about making the best of a bad situation, and Obama got no help from GOPers who were hellbent on blocking every initiative to improve the national economy.

I believe that the thing that worked for Bush in 2000 and 2004 is going to work for Obama: Americans want someone who is guided by a clear set of rinciples. Whether they agree with them or not, they at least know what to expect from them.

Bush was very adept at projecting that image.

Mitt has demonstrated that he is guided solely by the principle of expediency.

Republicans are supposed to be “rah-rah” for Romney today.

Democrats are supposed to be “rah-rah” for Obama today.

I don’t much believe either side at this point. Democrats are supremely confident right now in Washington. The Republican consultants not so much. It is a reversal from just two weeks ago.

Obviously he goes on to make his case for why Romney's going to win (it comes down to "passion" in Ohio apparently, something I'd rather not think about too much). But when you title your election day post "who the heck knows" and you're the banner-boy for hardcore conservatism, the truth is in the subtext.

Obviously he goes on to make his case for why Romney's going to win (it comes down to "passion" in Ohio apparently, something I'd rather not think about too much). But when you title your election day post "who the heck knows" and you're the banner-boy for hardcore conservatism, the truth is in the subtext.

This is his second attempt in a week at penning a post that reads, "I'm cool. It'll all be okay. I don't really care if Romney loses but he won't so keep reading my blog." He just doesn't do calm and deliberate well.

Erick - stick with what you believe to be true...that we're all going to be licking Satan's balls if Obama wins. You sound far more sincere when you say that.

Not passion. A secretary of state who has pushed against if not outright leapt across the bounds of legality.

I'm absolutely certain that the political news of Ohio for the next few weeks will concern "who really won the vote" - that, and the various court appearances of Mr. Husted.

Fortunately, the vote mess there will have no real impact given the large electoral vote margin I'm expecting. 303 (my prediction) minus 18 (Ohio) is still greater than 270.

It is interesting seeing how the various consultants for the two parties act on the eve of election day. And frankly I thought it was telling that one of Ryan's people leaked his post VP candidacy plans to the media. That doesn't strike me as something that they would do if they felt good about Romney-Ryan's chances.

Exactly. The spin I see from Republicans and right wingers is that turnout is going to be dramatically in their favor and I just don't see that. I don't deny that they're more enthusiastic than they were four years ago but as I learned in 2004 a base simply hating an opponent isn't enough.

No, there is this whole made up thing about the DoD not getting absentee ballots to the troops overseas, they have been talking about it for months and months now. The Pentagon even had to set up a special office just to work with any military personnel or dependents who were having a problem getting their ballot after congress stuck its nose into it.

Mostly just made up nonsense along the lines of the well known fact that in-person voting fraud is rampant in democratic precincts...

Romney would have been smarter to move his HQ to a swing state. MA is where he was governor though, so he kind of had to use it as his home base...even though he's losing in that home state by 25%. Michigan would be his second natural choice, but he's losing there as well, so home state #2 is out of the question. Since Romney's building a home in La Jolla, he could have tried using California - and this is where all the money is - but we're barely able (inclusive as we are) to tolerate the idea of the fucker retiring here and our only consolation is that he bought in a very conservative pocket of the state and will be surrounded by other shallow rich assholes like himself.

re: #420 darthstar

Me, I've some more off-the-wall candidates for the political HQs: Salt Lake City, Denver, and Atlanta.

I don't know if it was election day excitement or just that she wasn't quite awake yet.

The Hill has Romney by a LANDSLIDE!

That is a serious true believer. I mean seriously. I am willing to accept that there may be a path for Romney to win this election. A slim one, but there is one. But this outcome suggests that every poll in every battleground state other than Florida is wrong. An assessment of polling accuracy over the last 4 elections reveals quite an opposite conclusion. I give Dick a lot of credit putting this out there. He is going to look like a real asshat tomorrow but at least his is not going to hide from it.

Why Conservatives Turned Against Science
Remember when environmental protection was a bipartisan effort?
By Erik M. Conway and Naomi Oreskes

A prediction: When all the votes have been counted and the reams of polling data have been crunched, analyzed, and spun, this will be clear: Few scientists will have voted for Republican candidates, particularly for national office. Survey data taken from 1974 through 2010 and analyzed by Gordon Gauchat in the American Sociological Review confirm that most American scientists are not conservatives. A 2009 study by the Pew Research Center found that only 9 percent of scientists self-identified as conservative, while 52 percent called themselves liberals. Only 6 percent of American scientists self-identified as Republicans. This state of affairs is bad for the nation, and bad for science.

It was not always this way. In the 1968 election, Richard Nixon won the votes of 31 percent of physicists, 42 percent of biologists, 52 percent of geologists, and 62 percent of agricultural scientists (compared with 43.4 percent of the popular vote). While these data do not include party affiliation, they suggest that the scientific community of the late 1960s was much more evenly divided between the two major parties than it is now, and, with the exception of physicists, slightly more conservative than the American voting public at large.

Continues.

You know, they say people have turned against Obama and I know to a degree that's true but there's also many whom he has grown on. My grandmother did not like Obama at all in 2008. She thought his campaign was mean to Hillary and thought he was a terrible candidate but she's seen him as president these past four years and she's become a fan. Dueling Bitterness on Cable News

A Pew Research Center study found that of Fox News stories about Mr. Obama from the end of August through the end of October, just 6 percent were positive and 46 percent were negative.

Pew also found that Mr. Obama was covered far more than Mr. Romney. The president was a significant figure in 74 percent of Fox’s campaign stories, compared with 49 percent for Romney. In 2008, Pew found that the channel reported on Mr. Obama and John McCain in roughly equal amounts.

The greater disparity was on MSNBC, which gave Mr. Romney positive coverage just 3 percent of the time, Pew found. It examined 259 segments about Mr. Romney and found that 71 percent were negative.

MSNBC, whose programs are hosted by a new crop of extravagant partisans like Mr. Bashir, Mr. Sharpton and Lawrence O’Donnell, has tested the limits of good taste this year. Mr. O’Donnell was forced to apologize in April after describing the Mormon Church as nothing more than a scheme cooked up by a man who “got caught having sex with the maid and explained to his wife that God told him to do it.”

Homer Simpson voted for Romney because Mitt invented Obamacare

ABCNews's current front page is weirdly dominated by pro-Romney media at the moment. The central large photo for a story on the election math is a very positive photo of him and his wife, next you have a drudge-bait headline for the story about Romney breaking from election day norms and adding in some frantic, last-minute campaigning, and next you have some sort of Romney campaign biopic following him for 16-months.

Every news channel should have called out his lies. But few did. And when they did, it was wishy-washy. Romney is a blatant fucking liar. And he, for the most part, got away with it clean. That is a press failure.

By all means stay home if you want, but don't bullshit yourself that you're not voting. By tomorrow night we’ll likely know the name of the next president. But we already know the loser in this election cycle: political reporters. They’ve disgraced themselves. Conservatives have long complained about liberal bias in the media, and with some justification. But it has finally reached the tipping point. Not in our lifetimes have so many in the press dropped the pretense of objectivity in order to help a political candidate. The media are rooting for Barack Obama. They’re not hiding it.

VOTING FOR TWO?

A pregnant suburban Chicago woman didn't let being in labor stop her from voting in her first presidential election.

Cook County Clerk David Orr reports that 21-year-old Galicia Malone's water had broken and her contractions were about five minutes apart. But Orr says she still made the detour en route to the hospital to vote this morning at the polls at New Life Celebration Church in Dolton, Ill.

No word yet on if the baby was born.

I think that speaks in a way to how successful Romney's campaign was. He and the people running his campaign counted on both the public-at-large and the press to view any sort of criticism as impolite, regardless of what the campaign said.

Having Fox watch his back didn't hurt, either.

It's very telling that only the "Jeep is outsourcing jobs" bull was openly called out; mainly because the auto industry had to jump in and dismiss it.

A voter who does not bring an acceptable ID to the polls will be offered a provisional ballot.

There were two big issues with the PA Voter ID law:
1. It was "picture ID only" - which voids some of the list above that most people have, like a utility bill or a SS card.

2. It was implemented in the middle of this year with fairly little time for people to find and get acceptable ID before the election. As compared to enacting it in an off-year where there is at least 12 months to go through the process of getting an acceptable ID if you did not already have something that qualified. Also more time to properly communicate to everyone that an ID was needed.

3. I also don't recall off-hand if the law as initially implemented allowed for a provisional ballot if ID was not carried. I suspect it might not have.

I am so glad I decided to vote early last week. My schedule was full so I considered waiting until today. During an errand run, I drove past the community center and didn't see a lot of cars. I also thought about an ad I'd seen by Michelle Obama encouraging early voting cuz ya just never know what could happen on election day. That actually influenced my decision so I darted in and out in like 15 minutes. It was great.

My nephew and his wife came for the night Saturday on a lay-over from their flight from London. My niece brought me a gift - one helluva cold. I feel like shit and know I'm a walking germ bomb. Michelle was right, ya just never know and I'm so glad now I took her advice and voted early cuz there's no way I'm going anywhere today. Blows my election party plans for the evening which is a bummer but I have a lovely bottle of cold medicine (Merlot) and y'all. Can't beat that!

I think the media in general has been soft on both candidates although the fact checkers have been a source for reporters to call out some of the BS. Technically speaking, by Pew's metric, you could say the fact checkers were biased against Romney since they labeled his claims false more often. You could also say the pollsters are biased against Romney because they show Obama doing better. But the argument doesn't hold up because the fact checkers and the pollsters use the same methodology for both sides so they are being fair. The fringe partisan cable networks (MSNBC/FOX) don't use the same criteria when judging both sides so they're coverage becomes skewed.
One of the things I've noticed about the accusations of "Magic Balance Fairy" is that people start to think their side is somehow immune and cannot be judged by the same standard. It's faulty logic.

The MBF accusations come up when people say stuff like Rachel Maddow is no different than Glenn Beck, since they both have a partisan point of view.

One is a highly educated political commentator who researches the hell out of her material, and will admit when she's wrong. The other is an over-the-top demagogue who knows how to fire up his audience with bullshit that is easily disproven with minimal effort.

They can be judged by the same standard. What you seem to not understand is that both candidates say different things and do different things: applying the same standards will end up with different results.

Is there any doubt that total amount of and depth of falsehoods coming from Obama pale in comparison to Romney? Saying 'they both lie' when considering this truth is about as unobjective as saying 'Romney never lies' or 'Obama lies more.'

No, very few people here think their 'side' is immune. The vast majority of Obama supporters here can quickly and easily tell you things that Obama has been either wrong in doing or deceptive about doing.

What you've done-- almost cleverly diametrically opposite to the slant of your post-- is show what's meant by 'magical balance fairy'. You kind of took it meta-- you complained about the effects of people acknowledging that both sides aren't equal while you said something that pretended both 'sides' are equal, by using a superlative.

It's semantically interesting derp.

re: #683 sattv4u2

The thing that I get a chuckle out of it is when someone says "MBF" it somehow is supposed to negate the fact that what you're pointing out has no validity!!

"I'm showing that your side does 'x', therefore you can't show me that 'my' side does the same"

I think you're using one too many negatives in your first statement there - don't you mean that it's supposed to negate the fact that what you're pointing out has some validity?

In any case, I think the point people are making is that Romney's lies are of a whole different order of magnitude to what might be called "politics as usual".

Here's a challenge for you - go and find five examples of Obama taking a policy position and then the exact opposite position, with youtube clips to back it up. I think it would take you a while.

With Romney I am willing to bet you could do it in three minutes flat.

What's frustrating is when obviously intelligent people push this kind of nonsense ad nauseum.

Philly GOP: Poll inspectors being ousted for Dems

Court-appointed Republican poll inspectors are being forcibly removed from voting stations in some Philadelphia wards and replaced in some cases by Democratic inspectors and even members of the Black Panthers, according to GOP officials.

Secrets just received this memo from GOP officials:

The Philadelphia GOP is reporting that court appointed Minority (read GOP) Inspectors are being thrown out of polling locations in several Wards.

These Inspectors are election officials - again, court appointed -- and are reportedly being thrown out by the Head Judges of Elections (these Judges are elected Democrats) and being replaced by Democrats.

The billboards were put up only in urban, predominantly black neighborhoods in states where formerly imprisoned felons are allowed to vote. Now tell me that a person who has spent time in prison does not have a much greater apprehension about going back there. Or tell me that it doesn't matter for some reason because they could vote by mail.

I am up to speed on the claims that any little tiny thing is intimidation. Like billboards. Like a single black guy at a polling place. Or a cop in line to vote. or a billboard that states the law. People that easily intimidated have a personal problem, as in under motivated to vote. The indifferent voter is a problem. if that's a problem for one race or party more than the other well they have some people to persuade, not a system to fix.

Vote by mail fixes all of those issues easily and for the mere price of a postage stamp. Unless that's a poll tax? A stamp?

Astronauts cast votes from space with digital ballot

(CNN) - Every vote counts, including absentee ballots cast from the Earth's orbit.

Mission Control at the Johnson Space Center in Houston emails a digital version of the ballot up to astronauts in the International Space Station.

When the ballot is complete, it comes back down to Earth on the same path.

The ballot is then sent to the voting authorities.

This system was made possible by a 1997 bill passed in Texas.

Most astronauts live in or near Houston.

How would a photo ID help to prevent fraud in this instance?

Via HAVA, and with time to get ID out to all who want it, I support Voter ID.
I categorically object to deliberate skews in the process.

Voter ID is not in itself biased. Only when people in places with inadequate checks and balances in place are allowed to rule is this a problem.

What about the undiscovered violators and a really close race?

re: #783 Eventual Carrion

Now I will say that is wrong in a voting place. I did a 4 year stint as Judge of Elections for my precinct here in NW PA and it was also a rule that is someone came in the polling area with a campaign button or shirt that they would have to be asked to remove/cover it for the time they were in the voting area. Fine to display outside of 10 feet of the voting area, but not within the voting area. Same should be observed for the mural until person on mural isn't a candidate any longer..

Is that recommended for all? Saw a woman today wearing Romney-Ryan gear today. I thought it was really tacky or is that provision only applied to people working in the polls.

Caught the end of Morning Joke. They were saying there'd be no concession until tomorrow at the earliest. I hope we get a couple of decisive wins in places like FL, VA, and PA tonight so Ohio and their fucked up Secretary of State can't drag this shit out.

Actually, VA, PA, NH, CO, and NV will seal it tonight with 281 for Obama.

[Link: www.270towin.com...]

Thing is, I kinda have to agree, I don't see a concession earlier than tomorrow. Willard will be up all night, hoping that the margins are such that he can litigate enough final results to win. But if he loses VA and either OH or FL, then it's over.

Voter ID can and has been used as a device for the GOP. But that is an abuse. Stop the abuse and you have one more HAVA provision taken care of. Many laws have been abused. We rarely remove the law, we seek to remove the abuse.

It's an abuse in and of itself. It is a device of the GOP in and of itself. It serves no purpose except to disenfranchise minority voters. You are mistaken that it will result in more secure elections. It will result in fewer minority voters, which is its sole purpose. You have fallen for the rightwing hype. Please wise up.

I think there are blue states that have ID and it is not changing the state result. States the GOP does not run, which should support my point that it's abuse.

It was a rule 3 years ago (my final year). No campaigning of any kind in the voting area. Candidate shirts and buttons were considered campaigning. Maybe in your area of the state the county Director of Elections doesn't harp on it very much, ours did. Snopes has some things about it, and mentions something from a little while back in PA about the law.

I am familiar with HAVA. I commented on your Page.

Yes, you have written extensively about voter ID. Yes, we disagree. What I have never seen from you is an acknowledgement of the racist nature of its effects. In other words, it keeps minorities from voting more than it keeps white people from voting. That bothers me. Does it bother you?

re: #719 Daniel Ballard

The billboards were put up only in urban, predominantly black neighborhoods in states where formerly imprisoned felons are allowed to vote. Now tell me that a person who has spent time in prison does not have a much greater apprehension about going back there. And then tell me that there aren't a much greater proportion of black Americans who have spent time in prison than white Americans.

Or tell me that it doesn't matter for some reason because they could vote by mail.

Near dead thread but I owe you an answer :-)
IMHO
It's pretty simple. A polling place has no more threat for a black person than anywhere else, arguably less. It makes no sense to me that a person of any color who saw a billboard describing a law that they are not going to break keeps them away, I think that (if any) is a vanishingly small number of people. People that need to understand how to not be so easily intimidated. Seriously.

re: #834 wrenchwench

Sure it bothers me. The problem seems to have been really thoroughly addressed. I am skeptical of the real consequence of the small things. What if these things are on the same scale as fraud? Too small to have an effect. Does anyone have real solid numbers on these billboards or a cop at a polling place?

If we want to get into the tiny small margins as worthwhile because of close races, a point which I have struggled to convince many here, I want to include all of them. Quantified. Then we can look at what part of HAVA to emphasize. Until then, AFAIK, HAVA in all it's controversy has to be implemented evenly. Each part, every state.

The fact that it makes no sense to you is irrelevant. It only shows an inability to put yourself in the shoes of another person who is very different from you, and has had a very different set of experiences from yours.

Sure it bothers me. The problem seems to have been really thoroughly addressed. I am skeptical of the real consequence of the small things. What if these things are on the same scale as fraud? HAVA does not call for photo ID. I'm fine with what it does call for. I'm not fine with states that want to require photo ID, which they are allowed to do, but not required to do under HAVA.

If you are not asking for photo ID as part of what you think should be 'evenly' implemented, then fine. If you are, you are in favor of disenfranchising minority voters.

Asking for 'solid numbers' on the impact of those billboards or cops at polling places sounds to me like "It's OK to discriminate if it can't be proved that it's having the desired effect".
