The local "patriots" are not welcome:

Tea party poll watchers barred from Ohio polling stations

The tea party-affiliated group True the Vote has been barred from monitoring polling places in Franklin County, the second largest county in Ohio, after allegedly submitting fraudulent forms.

“The Franklin County Board of Elections did not allow Election Day polling location observer appointments filed by the True the Vote group,” board spokesman Ben Pisctelli told The Columbus Dispatch in a statement. “The appointments were not properly filed and our voting location managers were instructed not to honor any appointment on behalf of the True the Vote group.”

Just got back from my shift as a poll worker in the small northern Wisconsin city of Hayward. Of the roughly 1500 eligible to vote, ~800 had voted when I left at 4:00 PM. Polls are open till 8:00 PM here. No problems just a nice steady stream of voters all day long.

Over 200 absentee ballots, which is a large number for here.

How are other places faring today?

OMG I just watched the Fox News "black man intimidates voters" clip. I can't believe I was seriously discussing the relative nature of voter intimidation and vote suppression before. What you have there is an older gentleman wearing a beret opening the door for people. If he was white it would be the most perfectly normal thing in the world, which of course tells you everything you need to know about Fox News.

Anyone who thinks that is anything like putting up a billboard telling black people they could go to jail for voting needs their head examined.

The small community of Dixville Notch continued its now 52-year tradition of an Election Day midnight vote where eligible adults cast their ballots at The Balsams, a resort in the town. Ten voted.

New Hampshire's only worth four electoral votes (as are Rhode Island and Hawaii for comparison. Alaska is worth three.), but it's a swing state nonetheless. When the Dixville Notch votes were counted, the community was split exactly down the middle: five for Obama and five for Romney, and Twitter was afire with ironic, try-hard tweets about microcosms and recounts and the like, and it got crazy for a second. Then another New Hampshire town, Hart's Location, voted. Landslide.

Obama carried Hart's Location 23 votes to Romney's nine. Gary Johnson got a couple votes, too, but who the fuck is Gary Johnson. Now the president is up 28-14 statewide, and given New Hampshire's population density, Obama's probably got four electoral votes wrapped up. Plus, Nate Silver.

Sarah Palin To Greta: Evangelicals Riled Up By Obama Trying To ‘Violate The Religious Conscience’

Palin pointed to the Democratic National Convention, when the “reigning political party” tried to “boot God out of their written platform.” That played a role in riling up some faith-based voters, she asserted.

“It’s very inclusive and quite tolerant as opposed to what the mainstream media wants people to believe about the Christian voting bloc,” Palin said. They want to pretend the voting bloc isn’t there, she added.

Palin further criticized President Obama’s policies that “violate the religious conscience,” referring to the health care law.

The “mainstream media wants to people to believe the voting bloc of Evangelicals are a bunch of white voters who are bitterly clinging to their God and their constitution,” Palin said. But in reality, they are quite “diverse.”

Twit, I'm riled up by Evangelicals trying to impose their beliefs on my conscience.

This is what I hope for from tonight.

I don't expect the current crop of GOP politicians to work first for the betterment of the nation. They've shown that's not their first priority. It's a shame, a crying shame, but it is what it is.

I want them to realize that pedantic and obstinate obstruction is not a winning political strategy. The current crop may never work in good faith, but maybe the young ones who will start running in ten or twenty years will never even consider obstruction to be a legitimate political tactic. That would be a net gain.

105 lawhawk  Tue, Nov 6, 2012 3:03:48pm

Sorry I can't think about exit polls and early returns. Mrs. Lawhawk is stuck in bus hell at the Port Authority because NJTransit and/or Port Authority has completely botched the bus service once again.

There's supposed to be emergency bus service to several park and rides in addition to regularly scheduled buses (such as the schedule is - and it's close to normal as far as routings and numbers are concerned).

Well, some brainiac decided to shift gates so that the normal service got boxed out; they're waiting around with no place to go, while the emergency service attempts to move people.

This is what happens when you put NJTransit and PANYNJ in charge of an emergency response.

Not only that, but they once again show the competencies of the MTA to move people - and they learn from their mistakes within 24 hours. NJTransit? Not so much. Can't wait until they finally get rail service reestablished, though that could be months from now in some parts of the state.

The bus terminal can't handle the volume, and instead of setting up bus provisions running out of the Holland tunnel - so it wouldn't interfere with uptown traffic, they've got everyone trying to jam into an already overcrowded space where there's no margin for error.

I rediscovered the game recently when I started playing it in hardcore mode which really does present a serious challenge. re: #105 lawhawk

Meanwhile, out here in California, the real hot button on the entire ballot:

Gov. Jerry Brown battling sinking poll numbers in tax-hike campaign

Proposition 30 came into existence because Gov. Brown couldn't get a couple of Republicans in the Assembly to go along with him. Here in California we have now an amended constitution that makes it nearly impossible for the Assembly to come to any conclusion on taxes.

It's a failure of governance at the core. The primary reason the California Assembly exists on this planet is to raise and spend the revenue it takes to govern this state. If they can't do that primary task then maybe we should just get rid of the whole institution.

We make too many mistakes for pens.
When we grow up we might get pens the leaders said.

I voted for Barack Obama this afternoon. As it happens, I vote in Maricopa County, Arizona, which would generally be considered "conservative", and which I assume will collect more votes for Romney than for Obama.

What impressed me from the experience is how well I was treated, how polite and friendly everyone was, and how comfortable I felt. I happen to really, really like the people of this fine county. Maricopa County is NOT the Deep South. The "conservative" feeling here, I'm convinced, comes from a "Western live and let live" attitude, which I have always shared, and is no doubt part of the reason I was a registered Libertarian for a few years, then a registered Republican for 25 years, and now an Independent. I have never been a registered Democrat.

My point is that I'm horrified by the very notion that in other counties (looking at you, Florida and Ohio) there is controversy about people's ability to vote. My admiration for the fine people of Maricopa County is absolutely connected to my complete confidence that voter disenfranchisement would never happen here. What a great COMPLIMENT to Maricopa County, a place I will always love. And what a great INSULT to any county, say in Florida and Ohio or wherever, that in any way impedes anyone's right to vote. What a spectacular way for a jurisdiction to insult itself.

Assuming America rejects right-wing extremism today, current Republican efforts to disenfranchise voters, which strike at the heart of our democracy, may go down in history as an appropriate "final act" in the current chapter of wingnuttery.

When will we know results of presidential race?

It's been a grueling campaign. You just want to sit down with a bowl of popcorn and find out who will be president for the next four years.

So when will we know?

Technically speaking -- who the heck can say?

With a race that went into Election Day neck and neck, and plenty of questions about how key battleground states will play out, it's reasonable to assume a long night is in store.

It could be even longer if the election ends up balanced on the edge of a razor-thin vote in Ohio or if voting irregularities spark legal challenges in any of a number of critical states.

That's on PSEG to fix. Glad they found the problem, but they're supposed to be more proactive than this. And PSEG problems have bedeviled NJTransit too, because without power, the trains can't run on grade crossings w/o signals or crossing gates.

PSEG needs to be held accountable along with the other utilities. It was the same in NYC where ConEd power problems left the MTA waiting for power to be restored before subway service could resume.

Yes. Better than the Beatles, better than the Stones, and good for longer than either of those. Ray Davies is still good.

I actually didn't vote in 2008. Combination of not being entirely convinced on Obama, though I did prefer him in the end, and convenience matters (was in school out of my home state, didn't have any utility bills or IDs with my address in that state, and it was a safe blue state). I actually was considering McCain....until he picked Palin.

Now I look back at myself and thank god that election didn't turn on my non-vote.

I'm not trying to offend folks who suffer from mental illness. I wholeheartedly agree that mental illness gets lumped into a negative stereotype. There are lots of people who suffer from all sorts of mental illness but are very bright and competent and loving individuals.

The judge, up for retention, started making racial rants to people in her courtroom, claimed to others that there was a vast conspiracy against her and she was charged with battery for striking a sheriff's deputy, and was suspended indefinitely. She holds a position of extreme public trust. I hope she gets the treatment she needs, but if she is unable to execute her duties as a judge, and she gets retained to be a judge and draws a rather large salary while continuing to be unable to perform her responsibilities, well, then...something isn't right there. No one outside the legal community here pays attention to judicial elections so its rather sad.

Hi everyone!

I've been lurking a long time (or at least since Charles saw the light), and finally got the chance to register. Like many of you, I'm disgusted with the neo-confederate loons we call the GOP, but I've got a little twist to my background. I have my MBA, but rather than make me into a right-winger Galtian overlord, business school made me even more liberal than I was. You see, my first semester econ and finance course taught me that GOP fiscal and monetary policy is voodoo. I had never realized just how delusional they are when it comes to taxes, spending, the deficit, etc.

Anyway, I'm quietly confident in an Obama win, much they way I would be if my baseball team was up 2-0 in the world series (but I'm a Mets fan, so that's a pure fantasy scenario). I'm also very interested in the Indiana senate race, since there could not be a more perfect demonstration of the choice facing the GOP going forward: either nominate reasonable people like Dick Lugar and win, or nominate people who belong in straightjackets like Mourdock and (probably) lose.

I'm checking on the voting, but it seems you had to get a request in by fax or email by 5pm, and there were all kinds of issues with that - not to mention the constitutionality of trying to vote past tonight.

NJ was trying to get as many options available for displaced voters, but the counties and localities weren't set up to handle the email load.

My own voting experience? It took all of 5 minutes, and most of that was because the person ahead was kibbitzing with the election workers who they knew. No biggie. The deed was done.

Beck: If Americans are 'So Dead Inside' That They Re-Elect Obama, Then 'We Have to be Destroyed'

If you look at history through a biblical world view, the last step before a nation is completely destroyed is they drive the righteous from among them. If this isn’t a sign of a group of people that will drive the righteous from among them, and that’s the last step before God’s wrath comes, I fear for our country and it is - it cannot be overstated, it cannot be called paranoid ... If you are a God‑fearing person, hear me. Last call, America. Last call. Because the righteous will be driven from among them.

They are nasty, divisive and, I'm sorry, but there is no way to describe that quote from Valerie Jarrett other than evil. Warning: Saul Alinsky is just the beginning of these people.

But I believe in the American people. I believe that we are not too far gone. I believe that people can watch and see the difference. They can feel the difference. When you watch Barack Obama, you can just see he is angry. When you watch Mitt Romney, you can see he is not. We are not an angry nation. We don’t listen to demagogues like that. It doesn’t work. No matter how much power he has amassed, no matter how many friends in the media he has, Americans know. And if they reject it this time, if they’re so dead inside - that’s a possibility - if they’re so dead inside that they can no longer see the difference between good and evil, we have to be destroyed because we will be a remarkable evil on this planet.

A few thoughts:

No matter how far Silver and Sam Wang might have Obama in the lead - I still can't bring myself to think that they're right even though I'm quite sure their methodology is sound.

I find it interesting that the positive feeling from an Obama victory will never be the equal magnitude as how much it will suck with a Romney victory. Not sure if that's more about my own psychology (i.e., not wanting to be a member of a club that would have me as a member) or about how Obama is more or less a centrist and Romney is an extremist.

Their methodologies are both pretty good, though of course they differ. But neither of them have said it's a certainty. The chance is pretty freaking scary. Romney nominating supreme court judges.

As Silver has said, most of Romney's remaining chance comes from a dramatic and systemic failure in all of the likely voter models, and a failure in Romney's direct. If you have more confidence in all of those pollsters not failing towards Obama, that reduces the scariness commensurately.

Actually, Wang has it above 99/% probability. Seems hard to believe - but his approach of using only swing state polls makes it a lock. I'm trying to use Silver as my "expect the worst" and use Silver's thinking that the only way that Romney wins is a systemic bias in basically all the polls - which he puts at under 10%.

But even that is too tough for me to really accept. I look at those small leads in the margin of error and I get nervous. Of course, the whole point is that when you aggregate the polls, the sample size expands and the margin of error shrinks proportionately.

When I changed from an independent to a partisan, this was driven much more by the insanity of the GOP than by the effectiveness (or even coherence) of the Democratic party platform. It is difficult for me to imagine voting for a D candidate with the same fervor that I'm voting against the R opposition. (Even if I personally were the D candidate...)

My pet theory is that this is not unusual, and that partisans (both D and R) are driven primarily by the perceived evil of the opposition.

Latino activists: GOP risks slipping into ‘irrelevancy’

As the Latino electorate headed toward a record turnout, Presente.org executive director Arturo Carmona said President Barack Obama’s potentially record-breaking support among that group of voters should send a signal to Republicans.

“If Republicans continue to follow on the course that the right wing and Tea Party have set for them, they’re going to find, they’re going to follow on the course of California Republicans, which is a course of irrelevancy and self-destruction,” Carmona told The Raw Story Tuesday.

Last week, Carmona and Presente accused Republicans of voter suppression efforts for a series of misleading billboards in Pennsylvania targeting Latinos by falsely saying they needed to show identification to vote. Univision reported that Spanish-speaking voters in Colorado had similar complaints Monday.

Roll Call reported Tuesday that poll workers in a northern Virginia precinct refused to help Spanish-speaking voters with their ballots. And some voters in Los Angeles complained about “unpleasant interactions” with the purportedly non-partisan True The Vote group.

However, Carmona said, Obama and the Democratic party are not guaranteed a down-party victory, either, since more Latinos are registering as Independent voters, as shown by polling data.

I'm not. First, his team is saying he hasn't written a concession speech - which in and of itself is probably the most arrogant thing to admit in a presidential election. Second, if he does, it will show the real Mitt Romney, and he, and the GOP, will be castigated to the point where Boehner will have to work with Democrats in order to save his ass in 2014.

CNN Exit Polls shows for Ohio:

Men R+6
Women D+12

Split the difference, it looks like D+3, exactly what the average pollster were predicting. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Doing the same math, Virginia might be R+1. That might change, as CNN (as I recall) change their Exit Polls to reflect the final results as more results come in (I call that cheating). Obama doesn't actually need Virginia to win, but it would be much more comforting to know he won there too.

The real fun if there is a decisive defeat of the Republicans will be their upcoming civil war. The nutbaggers are losing seats in Congress, and that's bad for the business of running the country exclusively for the benefit of the ultra-wealthy (which is the real GOP platform).

499 Robert O.  Tue, Nov 6, 2012 4:38:39pm

In the Indiana Senate race, Exit poll puts Donnelly ahead of Richard "rape is God's gift" Mourdock. Tim Kaine looks slightly ahead in exit polls in Virginia (despite the Presidency being R+1 for now as per above).

Florida just closed. Exit polls:

Men R+5
Women D+7

Average across both genders, it says D+1. Obviously, I wouldn't give too much faith to this number. It is well within the 95% CI and could go either way. But Exit Polls now confirm pre-election polls were probably spot on.
