I am waiting to see if, and when, the RWNJs react violently. As a number of posters here have pointed out, the "blacks riot if Obama loses" meme has a certain projective quality. I have seen some ugly talk on the usual racist and nut-job websites. Most of this is fantasy/bullshit, of course, but the sheer volume makes it likely that someone will act out.
I've checked with my spies in the local right. Some of the top gun stores were besieged with buyers this morning, and stocks of military ammo are running low.
I am still not going to recommend that liberals, minorities, and sane people in general start arming themselves for self-defense. Some already have, though. Indeed, some always have. The option is there if you decide on it.
I will provide what advice I can, and we have some other highly experienced shooters here who will no doubt be willing to weigh in.

That's exactly right.
Morris predicted a landslide with Romney winning with more than 300 EV.
Obama did win, with an EV of in excess of 300, but that's a squeaker.
Gotcha.
Oh, and Obama won the popular vote too - and while it wasn't by as great a margin in 2008, it would have still been enough to win the popular vote against McCain.

Meh, that right there might be the biggest barometer of how much the GOP wants to blow of their feet with both barrels. They know the demographics are changing, and if they don't at least feign support for PR becoming a state, it'll piss off a massive voting bloc of Latinos and pretty much sink any national chances for decades.

As far as the popular vote count goes (with Obama still way down over 2008), here in San Diego county, when the county elections office stopped counting in the wee hours of the morn, they stated:
There are approximately 475000 Absentee / Provisional ballots still to be counted
I assume the rest of the large California counties likewise have numerous votes to count.

Beck: 'The Body of America is Even Sicker than I Thought it Was'
soon all discussion turned to the question of what went wrong, as the mystified participants tried to make sense of what they were seeing, leading Jerry Boykin to declare that the entire election was invalid because some members of the military supposedly were unable to vote and prompting Beck to speculate that America will not survive another decade if conservatives do not gain control over the nation's public education system.
But mostly Beck was just demoralized, saying that the result demonstrate that "the body of America is even sicker than I thought it was" and declaring that he no longer can say that he knows who Americans are:

Nate's too busy prepping his models for the 2014 and 2016 election to be bothered with a nutter like Morris.
I'm really thinking that Clinton won in 1992 and 1996 despite Morris, not because of him.
Morris couldn't be more hopelessly wrong than he was on calling this election, and he's engaging in more than a little wishful thinking if he thinks that Obama won in a squeaker when he predicted a landslide by Romney by precisely the same kind of margin.

How did Mitt Romney lose a race that seemed so tantalizingly within reach just one week ago?

re: #51 Charles Johnson
Another lesson from the election - the media's horse race hype was just that: hype. There was no horse race. It wasn't even close.
Not only that, the hill that the Republican Party is dealing with is only growing steeper:
From Electoral-vote's post-election analysis:
[Link: www.electoral-vote.com...]
As we mentioned many times this year, the traditionally blue states--the ones Democrats have won five times in a row--are worth 242 EVs. Obama won every one of them. None were even close. Not even Wisconsin, where Obama had a 7-point margin even with a Wisconsite on the opposing ticket. Romney made a last-ditch effort to win Pennsylvania, but came up short. The blue team won by 5 points. So next time around, we can talk about the 242 EVs that the Democrats have won six times in a row. Rick Santorum or Marco Rubio aren't going to make a dent here, probably not Paul Ryan, either. Chris Christie might.
But something new has been added to the mix. New Mexico is now dark blue, so make that 247. Obama also won Nevada, Iowa, and New Hampshire by margins of 6, 5, and 5 points, respectively. If they get added to the Democratic base, it becomes 263. If the Democrats have a floor of 263 EVs in 2016, the Republicans have to win all of Colorado, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida. All of them. Moving farther to the right, as seems entirely possible, is probably not the ticket to win these big, diverse swing states.
Outside of a major game-changer, Democrats in 2016 will have a FLOOR of almost 250 electoral votes, meaning they would only need two of the main swing states to lock up the election. A rather daunting feat when you consider that Virginia and Colorado are starting to trend heavily toward the Democratic column due to population shifts.

Just a thought about last night's 'spontaneous' Rove meltdown on Fox.
When Rove sends Megyn Kelly over to check with the numbers guys, there are already a couple of cameras in place to record her walk - in particular, one at the end of a long hallway that tracks most of her walk.
I realize that it would be easy to set up cameras in network HQ, but for a 'spontaneous' act it seemed pretty well-staged.
On some level - even just with a few minutes' lead time - that whole thing was staged.

The real test will be if the Dems can find a way to tie the legislative gridlock around Boehner's neck for 2014. That will lead to a landslide in the opposite direction of 2010, and then hopefully more will be accomplished.

Last night after the catering class we walked over to a local bar in downtown SF (Jillian's - their wings are excellent btw) to enjoy a drink and watch on huge screens the tail-end of the election process. For a while Romney was in the lead with electoral votes and the mood, though elated, was also cautious. Several of us expressed very serious concern over the mere idea..."what if Romney *was* elected, then what?!?" I'm sure that resulted in ordering a second round after the food arrived. In any event, the volume in that place exploded when The President took Ohio, California, Nevada, etc. We did see a couple Romney supporters in there - easy to spot: not cheering, clapping, and with deep frowns. Okay, okay, maybe they voted for a 3rd party, to be fair. I'm on campus right now and everything is very mellow yellow. Life goes on.

Poll: Latino Vote Devastated GOP Even Worse Than Exits Showed
An election eve poll of 5,600 voters across all 50 states by the group, which has researched the Latino vote throughout the campaign, concluded Obama won by an eye-popping 75-23 margin. Their research concluded that CNN’s exit poll estimate of 71 percent of Latinos breaking to Obama likely undercounted their support, although they agreed with the assessment that turnout equaled 10 percent of the electorate.
“For the first time in US history, the Latino vote can plausibly claim to be nationally decisive,” Stanford University university professor Gary Segura, who conducted the study, told reporters.
According to Segura, the Latino vote provided Obama with 5.4 percent of his margin over Romney, well more than his overall lead in the popular vote. Had Romney managed even 35 percent of the Latino vote, he said, the results may have flipped nationally.

Morris couldn't be more hopelessly wrong than he was on calling this election, and he's engaging in more than a little wishful thinking if he thinks that Obama won in a squeaker when he predicted a landslide by Romney by precisely the same kind of margin.

The Religious Right took a drubbing at the polls yesterday as voters rejected not only Mitt Romney but also some of the most extreme Republican candidates, even those in races that should have been easy Republican victories. Looking at the exit polls in the Minnesota ballot measure for the anti-same-sex Constitutional amendment, it seems that the main supporters of the amendment were older men.
