By the time we’d made the loop around the park and were about ready to say goodnight, I laughed and said “Gee, you said you were sick of politics and what do I do but get on my soapbox!” She said that when I talk about it, it’s fun and interesting and she wants to hear more. It’s just the bits she hears on news broadcasts that she’s annoyed with because they don’t tell her anything - it’s just fragmented sound-bites that she doesn’t trust or understand because she doesn’t follow the back-stories. Now that I’m filling in some of the pieces (in my own inimitable way - I’m nothing if not colorful when I get worked up about something) she’s getting interested in finding out more.

I even have her now looking forward to watching the upcoming debates with me. This is huge. Turning Texas blue, one low-info voter at a time. :D

Yep. Just delivered voter guides today, to coincide with people receiving their mail-in ballots. This reminds our people to vote, and encourages them to vote the whole ballot.

Those are just a few examples I’ve found here over the last couple of months. Thanks to all of you who did anything, even if it was just to vote. But extra thanks to those who did more. It worked!

i used to correspond personally with this moron:

1. The destruction of the health care system resulting in higher costs, increased waiting time, reduced access to doctors for seniors, and earlier deaths due to the concept of “pathway to death”.
2. Elimination of the goal of energy independence via the destruction of new fracking techniques
3. Increase energy costs, particularly electricity, coupled with more outages and brownouts.
4. A deep recession due to ideological beliefs in “fairness” rather than effectiveness, resulting in higher taxes with little reduced spending, and much higher national debt.
5. An acceleration of inflation that Bernanke will be unable to stop once it gets a foothold.
6. Much higher unemployment and reduction of personal earnings because of recession and costs of ObamaCare
7. A decreased level of individual liberty coupled with an increase in the power of the Federal government.
8. An extremely weak foreign policy that turns us into a “paper tiger”.
9. The destruction of Israel and the rise of Iran as a nuclear power and the most powerful state in the Middle East
10. Dodd – Frank will mark the end of the community banks and the enshrinement of the “Too Big To Fail” banks.
11. Crony Capitalism will replace capitalism, prices will increase, and service levels will decrease.

it's a kind of omnium gatherum of ignorance misconceptions about 'liberals', eagerly believing the scare tactics used in campaigns, and general stupidity

'World of Warcraft'-playing candidate wins election

Maine's GOP had accused Lachowicz — a 48-year-old health-care worker — of living a "bizarre double life" and set up a website revealing her participation in "World of Warcraft." Not only did the site show off a picture of the orc rogue assassin character she plays, it also dug up online comments she made about her love of the (sometimes violent) game. The Republican Party also sent out mailers as well as a press release claiming her "disturbing alter-ego" had been "revealed."

And then, on Tuesday night, Lachowicz beat Martin with the final vote tally at 8,666 to 7,753. Despite the small numbers, it was a big win, especially since the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee had labeled Maine's District 25 state senate race one of the key battlegrounds in the country.

Depending on local issues some of the ballots went to six pages or more. there were 11 amendments. We fought the intentional suppressive effect by pushing mail and early voting hard.

It got to be fun, but I'll just do the best moment: A nice, nicedly-dressed Republican lady engaged us on a registration drive. She said watching "2016" would really change our minds. Imagine what it does to a Republican's morale to see an old white coot and a woman with a walker registering kids.

That was the week after the TPGOP had to 'suspend' their mercenary registration effort in 5 swing states because their contractor, Sproul, was caught dirty.

My wife and I are resting after working hard the last few days for Obama and Elizabeth Warren. But it may be only a temporary respite if John Kerry gives up his Senate seat to join the Administration - he's rumored to be a strong candidate for Secretary of State. If so, there will be a special election this year to fill his seat. The Republican candidate would almost certainly be Scott Brown, and my guess is that Mike Capuano would oppose him. In that case Capuano's got himself a couple of potential volunteers right here.

NH House flips back into Democratic control

They also have a new governor, Maggie Hassan:

During her tenure as a state senator, Hassan fought for low taxes, affordable health care and education. She helped pass a bill for universal kindergarten in the state and helped raise the legal high school dropout age to 18. Hassan also fought to pass Conner's Law, which requires insurance companies to cover treatment for autism.

As governor, Hassan has pledged to veto any state sales or income tax in New Hampshire. During the campaign she was endorsed by former president Bill Clinton and the National Education Association for New Hampshire. She is only the second woman ever elected as governor of the state.

See, libertarians and democrats can get along!

It’s also important to remember that the rich are people just like you and me. There’s nothing about being rich that makes you smarter than everyone else. On the contrary, they’re often a lot stupider because no one ever tells them no. For someone who was a right wing nut to begin with, being super rich is going to turn you into a monster. No matter how wild your right wing delusions, no matter how sadistic your ideology, people are going to swarm around you, validating your every move. These guys quite literally have nothing better to do than sit around stewing about all the poor people and sexy young women (whose genuine affections they have to know are unpurchasable, even as they can purchase access to some of their bodies) just walk around free, fundamentally out of their control. They control their homes, their families, and their employees, but if you’re outside of that circle, they don’t own your ass, and that galls many of these angry old rich dudes. From their point of view, what good is having all that money if you can’t use it to expand your circle of control?

More than 792,000 ballots uncounted in L.A. County, registrar says

An estimated 792,660 ballots have yet to be processed in Los Angeles County, elections chief Dean Logan said Wednesday.

San Diego county estimates it has slightly less than half a million ballots to count.

Add then all the other big counties, and some races, even ballot measures, may yet change, including some for the US House.

I thought about you last night while watching CNN. A lady who had worked for Bush said several times that Obama's GOTV in Fla. was exemplary and completely outshone the Romney ground game. Y'all blew them outa the water and she was glowing in her praise, saying they just weren't as prepared and couldn't compete with it. Kudos!!

Once again my state has proven that it utterly sucks at the whole "adding up the votes" thingie. Here is the current status, note that only a few counties have counted provisional ballots and even less have counted any Federal absentee ballots (military, state department, etc.) yet.

What is even more disgusting was the serious mis-allocation of resources that resulted in no wait voting in many Republican areas and people still waiting in line for hours after the supposed poll closing time to vote in heavily democratic districts. That kind of partisan bullshit needs to be corrected before the next election cycle, even if it takes the courts to do so.

I hadn't heard anything about Power. She certainly knows her stuff, but the last time she was prominently featured in the news it was for calling Hillary Clinton "a monster" in 2008. I know time heals all wounds, but that episode didn't speak well for her tactfulness.

There was a hidden advantage--the OfA Dashboard page is just the front end of a really brilliant IT effort. Everything we did got entered and cross-matched instantly for the next contact. It was sophisticated enough to let our volunteers generate maps of the day's canvassing with contact lists organized to send a different team-member down odd and even sides of the streets. It also carried all our planning, training, feedback and scheduling requirements--what the Army calls a 'force multiplier'. There is a special group of IT professional volunteers to maintain and adapt it. With any luck it will be obsolete and replaced by the 2016 campaign. The motto for the micro-targeting was "metrics-driven, human-centered".

This country was originally predominately Protestant and of North and Western European stock. In the late 19th century we started getting more Catholics and people from Eastern and Southern Europe. Republicans To Obama On Taxes: Let’s Compromise By Not Raising Taxes

President Obama ran on raising taxes and won. House Republicans ran on not raising taxes, and got to keep their majority. So now the GOP is offering a familiar sounding compromise: let’s not raise taxes.

More specifically, Obama’s re-election, and the looming expiration of the Bush tax cuts, have made House Republicans’ prime imperative to preserve the current tax rates on high earners, which Obama campaigned and won on returning to Clinton era levels.

It’s a big ask, given the results of the election, and Obama’s long-standing pledge to veto legislation that extends all of the Bush tax cuts, even temporarily. Thus, their hopes rest on a vague suggestion that they’ll concede higher revenues in a future tax reform agreement with Obama, so long as he drops his demands for higher tax rates and agrees to cut entitlement spending.

This sounds familiar because it’s broadly speaking the same deficit cutting deal Republicans spent most of this past Congress pursuing — one that raises little, if any revenue, let alone revenue from high earners. And early signs indicate that Democrats won’t bite.

This country was originally predominately Protestant and of North and Western European stock. In the late 19th century we started getting more Catholics and people from Eastern and Southern Europe. Another thing that really ticked me off was the Mass. Republican Party's anti-Warren mailings, which were devoid of all logic and just made it look like they were throwing a bunch of things at the wall to see which ones would stick. Not Brown's fault, perhaps (except for belonging to such a Party), but they did him no favors at all.

Yet Obama’s Attorney General,Eric “my people” Holder, has openly stated that white Americans are not protected by federal hate crime laws against racist attacks. Only Holder approved “protected groups” are. Holder sent 10 special FBI agents to Sanford Florida to see if Zimmerman had any racist statements or actions in his background, yet he has ignored thousands violent black hate crimes against whites and Hispanics and the racist hate rape of thousands of white women.

This is an issue that should be compelling and enraging to white women of all political views, yet the Corrupt Liberal Media keeps them ignorant of these facts, instead super sizing controversial statements of Republican politicians about rape while Obama turns a blind eye to rapes motivated by race hatred.

Knowledge is power. Ignorance is bliss. So many Americans are blissfully ignorant of the Obama racist policies on hate crime laws while Holder Youth attack whites in the schools, on the streets and in their homes.

That the Obama Administration has 4 more years to continue this hypocrisy could be a blessing in disguise if it pushes the white voter and some craven Republicans politicians to a tipping point and awakens them from their continued groveling before the Race Card.

We live in interesting times.

Tonight I have multiple reason for gratitude. I'm grateful Obama won. And I am very, very grateful to still have ten fingers after a work accident today. A crucible of molten silver slipped away from me, fell into the water and made a steam explosion that blew the crucible and a few ounces of silver at me like a bullet and shotgun pellets. All I got was a split knuckle where the crucible hit. A cut and bone bruise that will heal.

Then I apologized to the co workers that I put at risk with my slip. Damn I could have hurt those guys. I am grateful that I did not hurt any of my people with my slip up. Very humbling day.

The super-majority wasn't a surprise.

It had been projected for weeks by Republicans across the state. Even Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Chip Forrester told the Nashville Scene two weeks ago that the Democrats would be in the super-minority "unless lightning strikes."


There was rain on Tuesday, but there was no lightning. The GOP picked up enough seats in both the state House and Senate to hold a two-thirds majority in both chambers.

"For the first time in history, we're going to have a walk-out-proof majority, whether or not the Democrats want to participate or not, and I think that's a good thing for Tennessee," said Rep. Ryan Haynes on stage at the Knox County GOP's election night party at the Crowne Plaza ballroom downtown.

I don't have any kids (THANK "BOB") and I'm utterly terribly at judging ages of young and old alike.

I think that the Obamas have done an admirable job of keeping the kids relatively out of the spotlight. The Bush girls got the media treatment, as did Chelsea Clinton, and some of the Reagan kids, and Amy Carter, and on and on.

Admittedly, I would like to be an invisible cyborg fly on the wall and listen to some of the family conversations. Do the kids know about the wretched things that a lot of random strangers all across the country feel totally comfortable saying about their mom and dad? How do the kids fit in at school? Do they wish they had more ordinary lives? Are they prima donna jerk-asses?

It's certainly not the public's business, but I sometimes get curious about these things.

This "starve the beast" strategy for the reduction of government has gotten really old, instead of having the balls to just stand up and fight program increases they opt to do it by decreasing government revenue. The theory that lack of spending money will someday force "that other party" to cut their spending while leaving "ours" alone is a fantasy. It is like a game of "chicken" on the highway where both sides refuse to be the first to swerve away from the other.

It hasn't worked, and it will never work, it has only led to massive deficit spending and the increasing overall lack of faith in there being any such thing as "good governance" by either party. The government desperately needs a raise, it really does, its commitments have grown tremendously but its income has actually decreased (sounds familiar to many of us, doesn't it?).

After that what it needs most of all is a pair of political parties that are willing to put their chips on the table and have serious discussions about where we can go from here. Not more of them dodging responsibility for what they were elected to do while waiting for the inevitable fiscal emergency to "force" them to do things many will find unpopular.

How about you responsibility shirking jackasses fix things before they become irretrievably broken?

Of the non Blank ballots, Statehood won by better that 1.5-1.

Statehood got 330k+ more votes than the next largest vote group, the doofuses who left it blank. Think the chance for the 50 star flag's survival are shaky.

As a Tennessean (and a recovering Republican) who voted for every Democrat I could, the fact that the TN GOP basically owns our Capital Hill and that the Democrats are more or less helpless to oppose any shit that the TPGOPers are gonna ram through disgusts and exasperates me. I live in Davidson County (Nashville), which, along with Memphis/Shelby County, is a spot of blue in a sea of red.

Statehood got 330k+ more votes than the next largest vote group, the doofuses who left it blank. Think the chance for the 50 star flag's survival are shaky.

Of the remainder, about 61.2% were in favor of statehood.

Even counting the blank votes, the Statehood got 20% more than the next most popular option, which was none, the blank votes. The PPD alternative got less than the no thoughts.

Thinking back, I now wonder if the reason Romney lost so bad was because all the GOP media sources kept telling their readers and viewers that Romney was gonna win in a landslide no matter what, hence many Republican voters did not even go bother to go voting. Another one wants to use some citrus juice on her uncooked (that is, not fried or anything) calamari to cut the "fat" - but squid only have about 1% composition of fats.

I have of late been keeping myself blissfully unaware of the latest rages in denier-ville wrt. climate change and such.

But given President Obama's apparent renewed interest in the issue, I checked in and saw the latest emerging talking point (a variation on one of the standard talking points) is that CO2 won't warm the surface as much as previously thought.

This is based on running off with some research that Reuters is reporting:

A yet-to-be-published study says that the atmosphere may be less affected by rising concentrations of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas from burning fossil fuels, than expected.

“If we’re correct it will make it easier (to slow global warming) but it will still require dramatic reductions in emissions,” said Terje Berntsen, a professor at the University of Oslo and an author of the report.

A doubling of the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere over pre-industrial times would push up temperatures by between 1,3 and 2,9 degrees Celsius (2,3-5,2 F), it said.

That is below a range of 2,0 to 4,5 degrees C (3,6-8,1 F) estimated as the likely response to a doubling of carbon dioxide in a 2007 report by the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Berntsen’s report is under review by the Journal of Climate.

Temperatures are now about 0,8 degree C (1,4 F) above pre-industrial times. Two degrees is viewed as a threshold to dangerous change including more powerful storms like Sandy that struck the United States last week, more heatwaves, droughts and rising sea levels.

A minority of scientists who doubt that mankind’s emissions have much impact say that natural swings are the main cause of rising temperatures in recent decades. If true, that would make it less urgent to invest in measures to cut emissions.

“Natural internal variability due to heat exchanges between the ocean and the surface” account for the apparent slowdown since 2000, said Richard Lindzen, a professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

He said the IPCC exaggerated the risks.

What Bernsten et. al. are doing is trying to make the most of historical observations. It should be noted that we have observations in detail over just about a century.

The problem is that we know from paleoclimatology that long term, multi-century and multi-millennial changes in temperature produce a "climate sensitivity" (a metric defined as the temperature change for doubling CO2) that is larger than the measurements over the century that we have of observations of the current times.

Bernsten is not a nut and what he is doing is not false, but the deniers want to ignore two things:

(1) Bernsten et. al. don't claim that they have modeled the very long term changes we see in the Pleistocene; and

(2) the deniers ignore that the range (presumptively 1 standard deviation) given by Bernsten for climate sensitivity, 1.3 to 2.9C, significantly overlaps the range given for the 1 standard deviation from the models (reported by Reuters as 2.0 to 4.5C). If we were to take a 2 standard deviation range I suspect the two would nearly completely overlap.

But statistics isn't a strong suit with the wingnut deniers, as Nate Silver so ably demonstrated.

Alas, all of this is probably irrelevant anyway as the US and most of the world's nations aren't really going to cut back significantly on emissions anyway, and the deniers are simply trying to make up for their own inadequacies by snickering at those commie scientimists...

Greets and saluts from the battered, broken, but not beaten NYC metro area. Yesterday's storm is wrapping up on Long Island, but some of us had to dig out of a major snowfall. Parts of NJ saw more than a foot of snow, including parts of Monmouth County that saw heavy damage from Sandy.

Power outages spiked once again during and after this snowstorm as trees and branches damaged by Sandy fell and took out power lines with them.

The commute last night was awful. Major delays for the LIRR and NJ Transit buses - we were at the PABT where the lines snaked through the building but there were no buses coming in because of an accident or other delay (no one could ever quite figure that one out because there's no reception/internet access in the bowels of the building so if the Port Authority sent out alerts, it didn't reach those on line). We quit the line and went to dinner instead. Best move of the night - because after imbibing and meeting up with legalbgl, we returned to the bus gates and found no lines and no traffic. That was quite the relief.

The temps are supposed to rise, so this will be a short lived snow cover, but it only adds to the misery of those without power (or those who had power and lost it).

Like any organization whether a business, a non profit or a governmental institution, success is often measured by those at the top but is built on the work of all the participants. The line workers, the middle management, the senior management and the executives. Each has a role to play and I have never seen an organization have success without success being bred at every level. When Obama said "you didnt build that" he was speaking of exactly that mentality. Getting out the vote is no different. It is down in the gutters work. Knocking on doors, making calls, convincing neighbours, driving people to polls. It is not deciding in a board room what ad to run when and on what network. There is a role for both but you can't win looking after only one side of the balance sheet. Same goes for America.

The first snow in the area always sees more than their share of accidents because people seem to forget that snow/ice is slippery and because you have 4 wheel drive doesn't mean you have 4 wheel brakes. People drive too fast for the conditions and that's when bad things happen.

The roads at the height of the storm yesterday were pretty bad, but by this AM, they were mostly clear (some wet/icy bits though).

DNAinfo snapped this photo at a closed FEMA assistance center on Staten Island today, and on a conference call with reporters hours later, FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate confirmed that some Hurricane Sandy-related FEMA operations "had to be secured or postponed during the storm."

FEMA and the Red Cross are both curtailing operations on Staten Island, Coney Island, and the Rockways at the moment because of the Nor'Easter now blowing through town. Fugate told reporters, "We are going to resume when weather permits. We are really concerned with people who are still displaced and have damaged homes, and if this [new storm] will make it worse." Greets and saluts from the battered, broken, but not beaten NYC metro area. Yesterday's storm is wrapping up on Long Island, but some of us had to dig out of a major snowfall. Parts of NJ saw more than a foot of snow, including parts of Monmouth County that saw heavy damage from Sandy.

Power outages spiked once again during and after this snowstorm as trees and branches damaged by Sandy fell and took out power lines with them.

The commute last night was awful. Major delays for the LIRR and NJ Transit buses - we were at the PABT where the lines snaked through the building but there were no buses coming in because of an accident or other delay (no one could ever quite figure that one out because there's no reception/internet access in the bowels of the building so if the Port Authority sent out alerts, it didn't reach those on line). We quit the line and went to dinner instead. Best move of the night - because after imbibing and meeting up with legalbgl, we returned to the bus gates and found no lines and no traffic. That was quite the relief.

The temps are supposed to rise, so this will be a short lived snow cover, but it only adds to the misery of those without power (or those who had power and lost it).

Thanks for posting that. I just checked on it and then called my friend's wife to warn her. She is buying some supplies (and a new ShopVac) and headed up that way to do cleaning today.

On the culinary front since I have not driven my guests out with my pasta, green beans, or meatloaf I have broken out the slow cooker and started a pork shoulder this morning... ;)

That's pretty disingenuous. They're not 'taking time off'...they're waiting for the storm to pass so they can be ready to reopen when it's safe for people to move about. By the way, this is standard procedure in emergency relief situations. FEMA aren't first responders, and shouldn't be encouraging people to move around at the height of a storm. Stay out of the way until the storm passes, and then you can help people more effectively.

Utility companies don't try to restore power during a storm, either...something about hot wires and wind and wet and human flesh mixing together.

The first snow in the area always sees more than their share of accidents because people seem to forget that snow/ice is slippery and because you have 4 wheel drive doesn't mean you have 4 wheel brakes. People drive too fast for the conditions and that's when bad things happen.

Well, you're wrong. Keeping the center open during the storm invites more problems. FEMA isn't a first-responder center, and treating it as such is silly. The point of the FEMA office is not to provide a shelter for people to huddle in. In fact, keeping the offices-- which are for signing and coordinating volunteers-- open during the storm would cause more problems than it'd serve.

The city has a lot of shelters set up for the purpose of being shelters.

To be blunt, it looks like you're simply taking the story without bothering to think about it in the least and whining about it because you think it'll make FEMA look bad. It doesn't, to anyone who's willing to think about it for more than two seconds.

Wait a sec. You're blaming FEMA for protecting itself and its personnel from a Nor'easter that was expected to cause additional damage. FEMA has operations set up in places like Midland Beach Staten Island where they're operating out of a tent in a park adjacent to a beach.

High tide plus noreaster equals potential flooding in those kinds of locations.

Flooding does not go well with equipment like generators, trucks, cars, etc. - and that could expose those to damage/total loss.

It was prudent for FEMA to close up for the storm- and it's not like people can't get FEMA assistance. 1-800-621-FEMA lets you talk with reps 24/7 and get disaster assistance applications underway.

Utilities likewise don't try to restore power during storms, particularly when winds are over 40 mph (well, that's by law/regulation to protect the workers from dangerous conditions) - that would put the truck crews in danger from high winds.

FEMA will be right back out there this morning.

Ohh, I see...from the article you cited...

Repeated calls to confirm the locations of Red Cross shelters in NYC proved fruitless, and according to the current Red Cross Shelter map, there is only one shelter in NYC, on Staten Island. Red Cross recommends calling 311 to find out the location of warming centers.

The only problem with that is that it is completely wrong...actual, for real, shelter map...

Though government funding of science, whether in education or in buying the actual equipment, we were able to get early warning of the unusual course of the hurricane and its power.

Because of that, we were able to notify people in the most vulnerable areas and get them evacuated. People in the at-risk areas were able to stock up on supplies. Because of the predictions, the emergency teams knew where they would have to go afterwards.

Those two things-- effective evacuation and good prediction-- are the main ways that government saved everyone's bacon.

heh - and notice it's the Staten Island FEMA office closing that had people upthread in a tizzy.

FEMA is a rescue and relief coordinator. A fairly standard rule of lifesaving and rescue is to avoid becoming someone else who needs rescued. It's pretty much that simple.

Charlie Sheen accused of issuing death threat...

That seems likely.

A man who claims to be a former associate of the Anger Management star filed a police report in Los Angeles on October 18, alleging he is afraid the actor will murder him, based on a text message sent to a mutual friend.

The man said he had recently fallen out with Charlie and claims the actor later sent a text to a female pal that read: 'I'll blow his head off with my Super 90.'

The case is currently under investigation, and officers are planning to speak to the 47-year-old actor about the claims very soon.

While Charlie hasn't commented on the accusation, a friend has claimed the man is looking for money. That also seems likely.

This is a really good point about FEMA and it always drives me a little crazy when there is an emergency and FEMA is blamed for not having shelters open, or bottled water, or the power back on. By law and statue the management of all emergencies is local. FEMA's role really comes after the initial stabilization phase.

True....it is all controlled by NIMS which is the National Incident Management System which is under Homeland Security. State and local authorities are required to adopt NIMS to get any federal assistance. NIMS gives authority locally (police and cities) and then scales it upward depending on the size of the emergency. But even with the largest events and FEMA involved, NIMS still does not supersede local authority's role in their jurisdiction.

As it ought to be! One wouldn't expect a federal agency to do a very good job of handling the lowest-level, most detailed and granular local emergency tasks anyway. They're not, y'know, locals. They don't know the area, the people, or the intricacies of the local situation. They will be good at medium- and high-level coordination of logistics and different organization of agencies, because that's something that has more to do with practice and experience than locality, and it's not something at which the locals will be practiced.

Large organizations handle the big picture, small organizations handle the small picture, because that's what they're both good at. It's just basic common sense, or at least it should be.

agreed. When I got elected to city council this past year I chose to become NIMS certified so I could work in my city's emergency management center during emergencies. The certification is through each state but the courses are provided through NIMS. I was very impressed at how the law was written. Over and over it stresses that State and Federal agencies are NOT to run roughshod over local authorities for the very reasons that you state.

Appearing on MSNBC’s "Hardball with Chris Matthews," Maher offered what he thought Mitt Romney aides were saying to the candidate as they learned the election results.

“I think they were still saying ‘yes Mein Fuhrer, you still have twelve divisions on the eastern front’ — I mean, until they actually heard the artillery,” he said, likening the Romney campaign's last moments to Nazi leadership's belief they could win until they had already been defeated.

Earlier in the interview Maher made another Nazi reference when asked if Republican strategist and Fox News contributor Karl Rove is the last person to “admit if something new is happening.”

"Downfall" has been the subject of many parodies, known as “Hitler Reacts,” that feature a scene in the bunker where Hitler is told that he was going to lose the war.

And the way to combat this [the political mess around climate change], beyond attempting to live a life that's restrained in its use of resources, is to write to your congresspeople, your senators, your representatives-- at every level-- to your governor, the president, to absolutely everyone you can think of, and tell them how important this issue is to you.

Speak up when you hear scientists slandered, direct people to good resources like [Link: [Link: www.skepticalscience.org....]...] Stress that we can do something about the problem, and that if we don't take the lead in green energy, China will, and America will lose its dominance in the world. Stress that green energy means jobs, and black energy means the loss of jobs.

This is about climate change. There are many other issues where the same strategy can be put to use.

Before rank-and-file conservatives ask, "What went wrong?", they should ask themselves a question every bit as important: "Why were we the last to realize that things were going wrong for us?"

Barack Obama just trounced a Republican opponent for the second time. But unlike four years ago, when most conservatives saw it coming, Tuesday's result was, for them, an unpleasant surprise. So many on the right had predicted a Mitt Romney victory, or even a blowout -- Dick Morris, George Will, and Michael Barone all predicted the GOP would break 300 electoral votes. Joe Scarborough scoffed at the notion that the election was anything other than a toss-up. Peggy Noonan insisted that those predicting an Obama victory were ignoring the world around them. Even Karl Rove, supposed political genius, missed the bulls-eye. These voices drove the coverage on Fox News, talk radio, the Drudge Report, and conservative blogs.

Those audiences were misinformed.

Outside the conservative media, the narrative was completely different. Its driving force was Nate Silver, whose performance forecasting Election '08 gave him credibility as he daily explained why his model showed that President Obama enjoyed a very good chance of being reelected. Other experts echoed his findings. Readers of The New York Times, The Atlantic, and other "mainstream media" sites besides knew the expert predictions, which have been largely born out. The conclusions of experts are not sacrosanct. But Silver's expertise was always a better bet than relying on ideological hacks like Morris or the anecdotal impressions of Noonan.

Sure, Silver could've wound up wrong. But people who rejected the possibility of his being right? They were operating at a self-imposed information disadvantage.

Actually, that's basically what he said - just phrased differently.

In my experience the racists are a minority of the party. However, they're loud and tend to get some things done. They also claim credit for various actions not intended to be racist but which could be used in that fashion.

Consider for example how every frigging immigration bill used pictures of non-whites. No, we don't have illegal Europeans here, not at all. (Personally I think the whole immigration thing is overdone - I'm actually in favor of significant opening. But the point is the focus makes it appear racist whether intended as such or not.)

This election was more than just a race between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, more than just a battle between liberalism and conservatism. It was a race between two different visions of what the American electorate looks like. Democrats saw the race through the lens of the “emerging Democratic majority.” Rising numbers of minority voters — and a corresponding declining white vote — meant that Democrats were playing with the wind at their backs. Add to that young voters, upscale professionals, and single women, and you have a pretty durable coalition that could push President Obama across the finish line despite the stagnant economy.

On the other hand, Republicans saw this as a “Silent Majority” election. They were trying to refight the 1980s, putting together the political coalition that gave the country the Reagan Revolution: evangelicals, working-class white Catholic “Reagan Democrats,” small businessmen, and rural voters. Conservative pundits kept saying that polls were wrong because they oversampled Democrats and ignored Republican enthusiasm. They seemed to argue that the polls were missing potential GOP voters who would show up on Election Day and oust Obama.

Unfortunately, we can now safely say which vision won in yesterday’s election. There was no silent majority of right-leaning voters to take Romney across the finish line. The white vote continued to decline, from 74 percent in 2008 to 72 percent in 2012, while the Hispanic vote went from around 7 percent to around 10 percent. Exit polls showed that women were 53 percent of the electorate this time around. Obama had an 11-point lead among women, while Romney had only a 7-point lead among men.

Republicans misunderstood the enthusiasm they were seeing among Romney supporters. It’s true that there was a great deal of energy on the GOP side, as seen by the large crowds Romney attracted to his campaign events. However, your base can be as energized as possible, but if it is a declining percentage of the overall electorate, there is not much that you can do.

The GOP needs to realize that demographics are destiny. They can't just keep aiming for the angry white guy anymore. They have to face reality and admit all the social, political, and cultural progress we've made since Gutenberg invented movable type.

Problem is, aiming for people that aren't just the angry white guy means pissing off the party base that you've built of all those angry white guys. They're not going to take kindly to languages that aren't English and to women, minorities and immigrants being given a seat at the table. But that has to happen if the GOP is going to have any hope of continued survival.

Think in large part it's come down to the reality that the GOP finds itself in the same position a lot of former parties did before they went the way of disco: A shrinking party base that is totally resistant to change and rapidly shifting voter demographics. The days of white male dominance of politics are swiftly ending and the GOP has no way of adapting to that without losing its identity.

Creeped out? It utterly dumbfounds me. I've never understood the enormous role Israel plays in U.S. politics. I get that some folks have historical/religious ties to it, but to me, the only reason it seems to be such a huge issue is the bloc of Jewish voters in the country (used to hear about them in Florida when I was a kid, but I'm sure they're significant in other areas).

I've got no problem supporting them (though it seems to be overboard at times), but that country has been politically dry-humped to the point of bleeding. Just don't understand it.

Probably construction, and construction in Vegas has been dead since I last visited there a few years ago. They had even stopped construction on a couple high rise casino's at that time because of investors fear that they were just pouring money down a hole. As Alouette says, he's basically asking for a handout from the government. If he doesn't provide health insurance for his workers, and they have to rely on government-subsidized health plans to get by, then he pays a penalty for that.

Look at this past election season and you see plenty of gripes about how Democrats have black people on "the plantation," about how Latinos should "naturally" be Republicans because they're religious and family-oriented, and that women voters don't understand that the the "war on women" is a fantasy that Democrats concocted to scare women away from the GOP.

The problem that I have with all these "Downfall" spoofs is that I know German, so there's a dissonance when the subtitles are so drastically different from what's actually being said. Turning off the sound just makes it lame.

Both President Obama and leaders in Congress stated that they would back PR statehood if it was "clear" that Puerto Ricans wanted it.

The construction of the PR ballot suggests to me that those in control were looking for anything but a "clear" signal.

They were looking to dilute the PPD votes (pro-status quo). Once the status quo was out of the equation, statehood wins easily, in great part because of the awfully bad pro-independence and the effective anti-independence campaign.

Surface gravity would go linearly with planetary mass, but with the inverse square of planetary radius. Depending on the density of the planet, it could indeed be habitable even with a 7x mass factor over Earth, although I don't think such a construct is physically plausible from a composition point-of-view.

In 1960, the whole country knew Robert Frost’s poetry; Leonard Bernstein was reaching large TV audiences for classical music with his Young People’s Concerts on CBS; theater and ballet were thriving, reaching larger audiences all the time; Hemingway was only the most famous of America’s serious novelists; and American avant-garde painting was a topic for Life magazine. (And European artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, and Giacometti were international celebrities.) In 1990, silence. High culture had become a term to laugh at. No blood; no mandates. Just an empty lot covered with weeds where the art used to be.

Also in 1960, television was still in its infancy and was something that families saw as an investment rather than a necessity. It was still treated for the most part as a piece of furniture, with the inherent cost involved, rather than an appliance that could be churned out by the millions.
