How It’s Done

Thanks!

Congratulations to Barack Obama and Joe Biden. My best wishes for the next four years.

My thanks go to those who made it happen. Here are some examples of people who know how to get it done.

Allegro.

[…]

By the time we’d made the loop around the park and were about ready to say goodnight, I laughed and said “Gee, you said you were sick of politics and what do I do but get on my soapbox!” She said that when I talk about it, it’s fun and interesting and she wants to hear more. It’s just the bits she hears on news broadcasts that she’s annoyed with because they don’t tell her anything - it’s just fragmented sound-bites that she doesn’t trust or understand because she doesn’t follow the back-stories. Now that I’m filling in some of the pieces (in my own inimitable way - I’m nothing if not colorful when I get worked up about something) she’s getting interested in finding out more.

I even have her now looking forward to watching the upcoming debates with me. This is huge. Turning Texas blue, one low-info voter at a time. :D

Read the whole thing!

Decatur Deb.

Wife and I are awaiting our Florida registration training packet—we should be registering students at one of the universities this week as they sign up for classes.

OhNoZombies!

I am proud to announce that I have been asked to bring a stack of voter registration papers to my husband’s mother’s church.
It’s awesome because some of these people haven’t voted in 25 years!
{{happy dance in progress}}

Stanley Sea.

I just registered with VoteRides.COM

Via a tweet I got. Providing rides on election day. I’ll take off & drive all day. Hopefully it gets out there.

Obdicut.

I’m doing get out the vote stuff. I suggest anyone with any spare time do the same.

EmmaAnne.

Yep. Just delivered voter guides today, to coincide with people receiving their mail-in ballots. This reminds our people to vote, and encourages them to vote the whole ballot.

And PhillyPretzel.

I have to be at the polls at 7am until 8pm. A very long day.

Those are just a few examples I’ve found here over the last couple of months. Thanks to all of you who did anything, even if it was just to vote. But extra thanks to those who did more. It worked!

Wow, didn't expect to see that! Thanks, wench! The end of that story is that my friend did vote a straight Dem ticket for the first time ever and is now paying attention to politics. Yeah, I call that a win!

A lot of people said that Obama voters were less enthusiastic this time around. Not me. I did some GOTV canvassing for the first time in my life this year here in my (swing) state.

Mitt Romney and the rest of the Republicans motivated me more than than they did last time. I never had the feeling that John McCain was going to destroy the country.

What an excellent post. It really was a push by the Dems. The desire was STRONG.

Unfortunately (and thanks so much for listing my attempt) I'm living in an extremely apathetic area, or as in my home, a no precinct area - vote by mail only - I did not get one reply. :(

But whatever, it was done.

That's one of those terms I got tired of after awhile: "enthusiasm gap." I cannot remember running into too many wingnuts who were enthusiastic about voting for Willard. They voted for the party, not the man.

i used to correspond personally with this moron:

1. The destruction of the health care system resulting in higher costs, increased waiting time, reduced access to doctors for seniors, and earlier deaths due to the concept of “pathway to death”.
2. Elimination of the goal of energy independence via the destruction of new fracking techniques
3. Increase energy costs, particularly electricity, coupled with more outages and brownouts.
4. A deep recession due to ideological beliefs in “fairness” rather than effectiveness, resulting in higher taxes with little reduced spending, and much higher national debt.
5. An acceleration of inflation that Bernanke will be unable to stop once it gets a foothold.
6. Much higher unemployment and reduction of personal earnings because of recession and costs of ObamaCare
7. A decreased level of individual liberty coupled with an increase in the power of the Federal government.
8. An extremely weak foreign policy that turns us into a “paper tiger”.
9. The destruction of Israel and the rise of Iran as a nuclear power and the most powerful state in the Middle East
10. Dodd – Frank will mark the end of the community banks and the enshrinement of the “Too Big To Fail” banks.
11. Crony Capitalism will replace capitalism, prices will increase, and service levels will decrease.

it's a kind of omnium gatherum of ignorance misconceptions about 'liberals', eagerly believing the scare tactics used in campaigns, and general stupidity

same crap, different moron

- This recession will become the Great Depression II (just as FDR kept getting re-elected). It might take a global calamity like WWII again to snap out of it.
- A lost generation: My nieces and nephews are coming of age. Really smart kids, but they don't see any open paths to a career. Working retail and food service now and for the foreseeable future.
- A highly-politicized Dept of Justice running amok, targeting private citizens (like us!) for opposing The Agenda.
- The death and suffering of my many friends and their families in Israel.
- My years of savings and investments for retirement becoming mostly worthless, as I am forced to retire on government largess.
- Medical research, for decades one of the brightest lights of our society, getting extinguished - along with the hopes of millions who were counting on these advancements.

This is worth passing along

'World of Warcraft'-playing candidate wins election

Maine's GOP had accused Lachowicz — a 48-year-old health-care worker — of living a "bizarre double life" and set up a website revealing her participation in "World of Warcraft." Not only did the site show off a picture of the orc rogue assassin character she plays, it also dug up online comments she made about her love of the (sometimes violent) game. The Republican Party also sent out mailers as well as a press release claiming her "disturbing alter-ego" had been "revealed."

...

And then, on Tuesday night, Lachowicz beat Martin with the final vote tally at 8,666 to 7,753. Despite the small numbers, it was a big win, especially since the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee had labeled Maine's District 25 state senate race one of the key battlegrounds in the country.

Depending on local issues some of the ballots went to six pages or more. there were 11 amendments. We fought the intentional suppressive effect by pushing mail and early voting hard.

It got to be fun, but I'll just do the best moment: A nice, nicedly-dressed Republican lady engaged us on a registration drive. She said watching "2016" would really change our minds. Imagine what it does to a Republican's morale to see an old white coot and a woman with a walker registering kids.

That was the week after the TPGOP had to 'suspend' their mercenary registration effort in 5 swing states because their contractor, Sproul, was caught dirty.

My wife and I are resting after working hard the last few days for Obama and Elizabeth Warren. But it may be only a temporary respite if John Kerry gives up his Senate seat to join the Administration - he's rumored to be a strong candidate for Secretary of State. If so, there will be a special election this year to fill his seat. The Republican candidate would almost certainly be Scott Brown, and my guess is that Mike Capuano would oppose him. In that case Capuano's got himself a couple of potential volunteers right here.

Heartening news out of New Hampshire:

NH House flips back into Democratic control

They also have a new governor, Maggie Hassan:

During her tenure as a state senator, Hassan fought for low taxes, affordable health care and education. She helped pass a bill for universal kindergarten in the state and helped raise the legal high school dropout age to 18. Hassan also fought to pass Conner's Law, which requires insurance companies to cover treatment for autism.

As governor, Hassan has pledged to veto any state sales or income tax in New Hampshire. During the campaign she was endorsed by former president Bill Clinton and the National Education Association for New Hampshire. She is only the second woman ever elected as governor of the state.

See, libertarians and democrats can get along!

What Do Rich Douchenozzles Get Out of Buying Politicians?

It’s also important to remember that the rich are people just like you and me. There’s nothing about being rich that makes you smarter than everyone else. On the contrary, they’re often a lot stupider because no one ever tells them no. For someone who was a right wing nut to begin with, being super rich is going to turn you into a monster. No matter how wild your right wing delusions, no matter how sadistic your ideology, people are going to swarm around you, validating your every move. These guys quite literally have nothing better to do than sit around stewing about all the poor people and sexy young women (whose genuine affections they have to know are unpurchasable, even as they can purchase access to some of their bodies) just walk around free, fundamentally out of their control. They control their homes, their families, and their employees, but if you’re outside of that circle, they don’t own your ass, and that galls many of these angry old rich dudes. From their point of view, what good is having all that money if you can’t use it to expand your circle of control?

More than 792,000 ballots uncounted in L.A. County, registrar says

An estimated 792,660 ballots have yet to be processed in Los Angeles County, elections chief Dean Logan said Wednesday.

San Diego county estimates it has slightly less than half a million ballots to count.

Add then all the other big counties, and some races, even ballot measures, may yet change, including some for the US House.

Once again my state has proven that it utterly sucks at the whole "adding up the votes" thingie. Here is the current status, note that only a few counties have counted provisional ballots and even less have counted any Federal absentee ballots (military, state department, etc.) yet.

[Link: enight.dos.state.fl.us...]

What is even more disgusting was the serious mis-allocation of resources that resulted in no wait voting in many Republican areas and people still waiting in line for hours after the supposed poll closing time to vote in heavily democratic districts. That kind of partisan bullshit needs to be corrected before the next election cycle, even if it takes the courts to do so.

There was a hidden advantage--the OfA Dashboard page is just the front end of a really brilliant IT effort. Everything we did got entered and cross-matched instantly for the next contact. It was sophisticated enough to let our volunteers generate maps of the day's canvassing with contact lists organized to send a different team-member down odd and even sides of the streets. It also carried all our planning, training, feedback and scheduling requirements--what the Army calls a 'force multiplier'. There is a special group of IT professional volunteers to maintain and adapt it. With any luck it will be obsolete and replaced by the 2016 campaign. The motto for the micro-targeting was "metrics-driven, human-centered".

National Racists Online head crafty-crafter (now that Derbyshire is gone) chimes in on one of the talking points of the election results:

On Whites in the Minority

In my London Spectator piece on the election, I gave this moderately optimistic view [...]:

The electoral overwhelming of the white majority may not have the effect that simple extrapolation suggests. Most Hispanics are white. Intermarriage is creating mixed and non-racial identities that further confuse ethnic categories. One effect could be an electorate that votes less and less along ethnic lines.

I don’t repent of this view. I think it is possible and I hope it is the path we take. But it would be false comfort (and the kind of irresponsible optimism I detest) not to mention a darker possibility. That possibility is that whites will develop a defensive minority consciousness in response both to their statistically weaker position.

[...]

Further, such hostile and defensive attitudes are more likely to spread when others are rejoicing in their fall from grace. Maybe the Internet has done no more than bring to light what was already present under stones and lichen, but I find some of racial slurs and insults around this theme on the Web slightly alarming.

[...]

O'Sullivan is concerned - nay, alarmed.

He's concerned that nasty folk beating up on whites online will cause said whites to turn towards racism.

Only on NRO.

58 HappyWarrior  Wed, Nov 7, 2012 7:37:51pm

So sick of hearing supposedly mainstream conservative publications whine about how whites don't have the influence we used to. So what? A country's demographics change. This country was originally predominately Protestant and of North and Western European stock. In the late 19th century we started getting more Catholics and people from Eastern and Southern Europe. America's strength is in our diversity and will continue to be.

Republicans To Obama On Taxes: Let’s Compromise By Not Raising Taxes

President Obama ran on raising taxes and won. House Republicans ran on not raising taxes, and got to keep their majority. So now the GOP is offering a familiar sounding compromise: let’s not raise taxes.

More specifically, Obama’s re-election, and the looming expiration of the Bush tax cuts, have made House Republicans’ prime imperative to preserve the current tax rates on high earners, which Obama campaigned and won on returning to Clinton era levels.

It’s a big ask, given the results of the election, and Obama’s long-standing pledge to veto legislation that extends all of the Bush tax cuts, even temporarily. Thus, their hopes rest on a vague suggestion that they’ll concede higher revenues in a future tax reform agreement with Obama, so long as he drops his demands for higher tax rates and agrees to cut entitlement spending.

This sounds familiar because it’s broadly speaking the same deficit cutting deal Republicans spent most of this past Congress pursuing — one that raises little, if any revenue, let alone revenue from high earners. And early signs indicate that Democrats won’t bite.

There was this article where the actual argument was: all the things women seem to care about within reproductive rights are unimportant and illusory, but we have to convince women that what they're interested in doesn't matter and instead they should adhere to our talking points.

Oh, and liberals are the ones that hate women because they made a jocular reference to lady parts.

That was the week after the TPGOP had to 'suspend' their mercenary registration effort in 5 swing states because their contractor, Sproul, was caught dirty.

It's also total bullshit because a) they're made up largely of white males and b) a huge part of the left, Democrats, etc., is also made up of white males. There's a lot of them. I'm one myself.

Another thing that really ticked me off was the Mass. Republican Party's anti-Warren mailings, which were devoid of all logic and just made it look like they were throwing a bunch of things at the wall to see which ones would stick. To: Kukai

Most white women are ignorant.

Ignorant of the racial realities of black race hatred of whites,of how the Obama Administration, and the Corrupt Liberal Media and the Fake Feminist turn a blind eye to the horrific rate of interracial, black on white rape.

All rapes are hate crimes. All interracial rapes are interracial hate crimes and black on white rapes are epidemic compared to the reverse.

Here are the facts:

Only 5 percent of all interracial forcible rapes are white on black,95 percent are black on white. This is a hate ratio of 19 to 1.

Only 2 percent of interracial sexual homicides (where the rape victim is also murdered) are white on black,98 percent are black on white. This is a hate ratio of 48 to 1

100 percent of sexual homicides of elderly women in modern times are black on white. This is a hate ratio of 100 to 1.

Yet Obama’s Attorney General,Eric “my people” Holder, has openly stated that white Americans are not protected by federal hate crime laws against racist attacks. Only Holder approved “protected groups” are. Holder sent 10 special FBI agents to Sanford Florida to see if Zimmerman had any racist statements or actions in his background, yet he has ignored thousands violent black hate crimes against whites and Hispanics and the racist hate rape of thousands of white women.

This is an issue that should be compelling and enraging to white women of all political views, yet the Corrupt Liberal Media keeps them ignorant of these facts, instead super sizing controversial statements of Republican politicians about rape while Obama turns a blind eye to rapes motivated by race hatred.

Knowledge is power. Ignorance is bliss. So many Americans are blissfully ignorant of the Obama racist policies on hate crime laws while Holder Youth attack whites in the schools, on the streets and in their homes.

That the Obama Administration has 4 more years to continue this hypocrisy could be a blessing in disguise if it pushes the white voter and some craven Republicans politicians to a tipping point and awakens them from their continued groveling before the Race Card.

We live in interesting times.

Two powerful House Republican chairmen—Rep. Fred Upton of the Energy and Commerce Committee and Rep. Doc Hastings of the Natural Resources Committee—both won re-election. Other Republican lawmakers who hold prominent roles on the energy committees, Reps. Ed Whitfield of Kentucky and John Shimkus of Illinois, also hung on to their seats.

Republicans say they would step up scrutiny of Mr. Obama's energy and environmental plans. "I think [the Environmental Protection Agency] is stretching the boundaries of their power," a top Republican aide said. "I think you'll see a very energized House of Representatives going forward."

Republicans are planning to battle greenhouse-gas rules and hydraulic-fracturing standards, one Republican aide said. The GOP will also reserve firepower to attack Mr. Obama's policies on coal production and use.

"I think there's a huge philosophical gap between the House and the administration on energy issues," said Joe Stanko, head of federal government relations at the law firm Hunton & Williams. "I don't see any of that changing."

Energy companies generally favored Republican candidates in 2012. How Grover Norquist’s Radical Anti-Tax Pledge Sunk Top Tier Republican Senate Candidates

While not all races have been called, at least 55 Republican House incumbents or candidates who signed the pledge — and 24 Republican Senators or hopefuls — lost on Tuesday. Linda McMahon (R-CT), Senator Scott Brown (R-MA), Treasurer Josh Mandel (R-OH), Secretary of State Charles Summers (R-ME), former Gov. Tommy Thompson (R-CA) all signed the pledge and were attacked by their Democrats opponents in face-to-face debates over the issue. All five were defeated in their Senate bids.

State Sen. Tony Strickland (R-CA), Rep. Bob Dold (R-IL), State Sen. Richard Tisei (R-MA), and Rep. Frank Guita (R-NH) were also attacked by their House race opponents in debates for signing the pledge in this campaign or in the past. All four were also defeated.

In fact, of the fifteen-plus House Republican incumbents who apparently lost re-election, every single one had signed Norquist’s pledge.

More evidence of why yesterday's election wasn't as much a victory for Democrats as some would like to think:

Republicans Take Even More Control of the Tennessee Legislature

The super-majority wasn't a surprise.

It had been projected for weeks by Republicans across the state. Even Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Chip Forrester told the Nashville Scene two weeks ago that the Democrats would be in the super-minority "unless lightning strikes."

There was rain on Tuesday, but there was no lightning. The GOP picked up enough seats in both the state House and Senate to hold a two-thirds majority in both chambers.

"For the first time in history, we're going to have a walk-out-proof majority, whether or not the Democrats want to participate or not, and I think that's a good thing for Tennessee," said Rep. Ryan Haynes on stage at the Knox County GOP's election night party at the Crowne Plaza ballroom downtown.

A few minutes later, Rep. Bill Dunn took the stage with Rep. Harry Brooks. "We've got a super-majority in the House and the Senate," Dunn said. "We're gonna git 'er done!" The ballroom cheered.

[...]

In short, if you thought the past two years of embarrassing national headlines were bad, prepare yourself—things might get worse.

The crowd at the Crowne Plaza was overwhelmingly white and dressed in red (or, in many men's case, wearing red ties). [...]

I wonder to what the pronoun " 'er " refers?

Anyway, in the TN state legislature the Democratic party is now irrelevant. Same in the IN legislature.

At the grass roots these red states are getting redder.

Would I be wrong in guessing that was Huntsman?

125 The Questionable Timing of a Flea  Wed, Nov 7, 2012 8:19:35pm

re: #110 Dark_Falcon

Not sure they should count Allan West. West denounced Norquist's pledge last year and said he'd not be bound by it. That however, is the bad thing about West losing: Norquist will put West's photo up on his "Defeated Pledge-Breakers Wall", as a warning to those who would defy him. Not kidding, BTW, Grover Norquist really does have such a wall of photos.

There's like...zero...downside to not having a convicted war criminal that imagines there's Communist infiltrators in the government in a position of power.

Also, what rube would imagine a correlation between Grover's wall and West's loss. Is Grover a wizard? Did he provide money to West's opponent? Vital information? Magic beans?

And furthermore, why are people that shit themselves over non-binding UN Resolutions swearing oaths to a lobbyist?

More evidence of why yesterday's election wasn't as much a victory for Democrats as some would like to think:

Republicans Take Even More Control of the Tennessee Legislature

I wonder to what the pronoun " 'er " refers?

Anyway, in the TN state legislature the Democratic party is now irrelevant. Same in the IN legislature.

At the grass roots these red states are getting redder.

"Git 'er done!" is a phrase used by TV comedian "Larry the Cable Guy". It's not aimed at women. Mr. Dunn was just using a semi-popular TV line.

I myself will not use that line in the way Larry says it. I'll always say "Get it done!", as a result of how I was raised and my innate concern with doing things correctly.

Actually, I was thinking something along the lines of, "weren't these kids just barely above toddler age just a little while ago?"

I don't have any kids (THANK "BOB") and I'm utterly terribly at judging ages of young and old alike.

I think that the Obamas have done an admirable job of keeping the kids relatively out of the spotlight. The Bush girls got the media treatment, as did Chelsea Clinton, and some of the Reagan kids, and Amy Carter, and on and on.

Admittedly, I would like to be an invisible cyborg fly on the wall and listen to some of the family conversations. Do the kids know about the wretched things that a lot of random strangers all across the country feel totally comfortable saying about their mom and dad? How do the kids fit in at school? Do they wish they had more ordinary lives? Are they prima donna jerk-asses?

It's certainly not the public's business, but I sometimes get curious about these things.

Peter Brimelow, former editor at Forbes and National Review and owner of VDARE, has dissected Romney's loss and determined why Mitt lost - he didn't get a big enough share of the American (aka "white") vote:

Only one metric really matters in the close 2012 Presidential race: according to CNN's exit polling (scroll down), Mitt Romey's share of the white a.k.a. American vote was just 59%, for a twenty-point lead over Obama among whites. That's at the high end of the mediocre post-Reagan range, and four points above the hapless John McCain in 2008, but just not enough—as VDARE.com repeatedly remarked during the campaign as we prised white share data out of relectant MSM polls. [...]

Uh huh, that's what the GOP needs to survive - get a larger share of the white vote.

Re: Grover Norquist

This "starve the beast" strategy for the reduction of government has gotten really old, instead of having the balls to just stand up and fight program increases they opt to do it by decreasing government revenue. The theory that lack of spending money will someday force "that other party" to cut their spending while leaving "ours" alone is a fantasy. It is like a game of "chicken" on the highway where both sides refuse to be the first to swerve away from the other.

It hasn't worked, and it will never work, it has only led to massive deficit spending and the increasing overall lack of faith in there being any such thing as "good governance" by either party. The government desperately needs a raise, it really does, its commitments have grown tremendously but its income has actually decreased (sounds familiar to many of us, doesn't it?).

After that what it needs most of all is a pair of political parties that are willing to put their chips on the table and have serious discussions about where we can go from here. Not more of them dodging responsibility for what they were elected to do while waiting for the inevitable fiscal emergency to "force" them to do things many will find unpopular.

How about you responsibility shirking jackasses fix things before they become irretrievably broken?

I never could have anticipated that they were all completely fake, self-absorbed wimps buoyed only by continuous immersion in a mythology in which their opponents are weak and incompetent. But doubtless there is zero relationship between the fragility of their egos and the larger worldview they espouse.

There is also zero chance that they will sequester themselves and establish a new mythology in which they made no mistakes, nor underestimated anyone, and this situation arises from the defects of everyone that isn't one of their supporters. Nor will they boost their fragile egos by deciding that, evidence aside, they are the only patriots and that everyone else is, in fact, disloyal and fundamentally unworthy of a vote or even the basic label of American.

Indeed, one could conclude that the powers that be designed the ballot to try and obfuscate the true desires of the PR voters.

Only 54% of the PR voters said they were not content with the current status of PR.

That means 46% are satisfied with the status quo.

re: #213 ProGunLiberal

And since the majority opposed to the status quo is not that large, one could argue that there isn't a strong case to make it a state.

On the second question, only about 1.3 million voters made a choice. Of those, nearly 800,000, or 61 percent of those expressing an opinion, chose statehood — the first majority after three previous referendums on the issue over the past 45 years. Some 437,000 backed sovereign free association and 72,560 chose independence. Nearly 500,000, however, left that question blank.

If only 800,000 Puerto Ricans want statehood, that is only like a third of the adult population who voted for that.

Peter Brimelow, former editor at Forbes and National Review and owner of VDARE, has dissected Romney's loss and determined why Mitt lost - he didn't get a big enough share of the American (aka "white") vote:

Uh huh, that's what the GOP needs to survive - get a larger share of the white vote.

A college professor once told me in an advertising class that the surest way to go out of business was to get a larger and larger share of a declining market.

There are parallels here, but someone's not getting the message.

The FEMA camps STILL aren't open after, what is it? 25 years? We need to go Stalin on the deadbeat contractors who are building these things.

Stalin's telegram to aircraft production managers, 1941:

You have let down our country and our Red Army. You have the nerve not to manufacture IL-2s until now. Our Red Army now needs IL-2 aircraft like the air it breathes, like the bread it eats. Shenkman produces one IL-2 a day and Tretyakov builds one or two MiG-3s daily. It is a mockery of our country and the Red Army. I ask you not to try the government's patience, and demand that you manufacture more ILs. This is my final warning.

Production increased; quite dramatically in fact.

And the Blank Ballots were about 400k+.

Do we count blank ballots for voting here? No, no we don't. Because they're blank.

Of the remainder, about 61.2% were in favor of statehood.

Even counting the blank votes, the Statehood got 20% more than the next most popular option, which was none, the blank votes. The PPD alternative got less than the no thoughts.

Thinking back, I now wonder if the reason Romney lost so bad was because all the GOP media sources kept telling their readers and viewers that Romney was gonna win in a landslide no matter what, hence many Republican voters did not even go bother to go voting. If things were opposite, if Fox news kept screaming Obama was most likely gonna win unless every person watching goes out, then I wonder if maybe we would have had either a closer election or Romney winning by a slim margin. I am actually surprised this isn't what the right wing did, since their whole industry is always built on panic and fear.

IL-2s were superb ground attack aircraft, and Stalin was not exaggerating their importance. They proved able to disrupt German vehicle columns even in the face of heavy ground fire and they gave the Soviet Air Force the effective ground attack weapon it needed (until 1943 Soviet medium bombers were of limited use due to effective German fighter cover). It was after Stalin's orders produced in massive numbers that outstripped all non-medium bomber German ground-attack aircraft put together.

Naw, the majority of their people were going to the polls to vote against Obama regardless. The entire effort put into the last ten days or so of portraying Romney as having a lead and having momentum was meant to discourage the democrats from voting, not to make their side feel comfortable.

Their side did show up, the voting numbers are very high, higher than 2008 in a lot of states, it is just that our numbers were even higher.

The wackiness of cooking shows, especially with professionals as the competitors: one pro chef says he's going to use the banana as his "protein" - when in reality 1 medium size banana has only around 1 gram of protein and is almost all carbohydrates. Another one wants to use some citrus juice on her uncooked (that is, not fried or anything) calamari to cut the "fat" - but squid only have about 1% composition of fats.

Besides the inherent inanity of the whole chef competition thing to begin with these types of wives-tales passed off as explanations is silly. Yeah, each profession has its own lingo, I get that, but behind all these buzz words there has to be some meaning somewhere.

Not going to happen of course, but in the event that it did, I'd accept a modest wealth tax as part of the bargain, so that phoneys like Warren Buffet - who pays "a lower rate than his secretary" because he never sells anything to realise capital gains* - could cough up a bit more.

I have of late been keeping myself blissfully unaware of the latest rages in denier-ville wrt. climate change and such.

But given President Obama's apparent renewed interest in the issue, I checked in and saw the latest emerging talking point (a variation on one of the standard talking points) is that CO2 won't warm the surface as much as previously thought.

This is based on running off with some research that Reuters is reporting:

China, less impact by CO2 may explain warming slowdown

[...]

A yet-to-be-published study says that the atmosphere may be less affected by rising concentrations of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas from burning fossil fuels, than expected.

“If we’re correct it will make it easier (to slow global warming) but it will still require dramatic reductions in emissions,” said Terje Berntsen, a professor at the University of Oslo and an author of the report.

A doubling of the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere over pre-industrial times would push up temperatures by between 1,3 and 2,9 degrees Celsius (2,3-5,2 F), it said.

That is below a range of 2,0 to 4,5 degrees C (3,6-8,1 F) estimated as the likely response to a doubling of carbon dioxide in a 2007 report by the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Berntsen’s report is under review by the Journal of Climate.

Temperatures are now about 0,8 degree C (1,4 F) above pre-industrial times. Two degrees is viewed as a threshold to dangerous change including more powerful storms like Sandy that struck the United States last week, more heatwaves, droughts and rising sea levels.

A minority of scientists who doubt that mankind’s emissions have much impact say that natural swings are the main cause of rising temperatures in recent decades. If true, that would make it less urgent to invest in measures to cut emissions.

“Natural internal variability due to heat exchanges between the ocean and the surface” account for the apparent slowdown since 2000, said Richard Lindzen, a professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

He said the IPCC exaggerated the risks.

[...]

Ah yes, news wire writers strike again. Some mysterious "minority scientists" turn out to be the same old group, which is why they quote Lindzen, for the umpteenth millionth time.

The real scientific work referenced by Reuters is by Dr. Berntsen, and is likely the same research reported here:

[...] In this paper, we present a model framework for estimating the climate sensitivity. The core of the model is a simple, deterministic climate model based on elementary physical laws such as energy balance. It models yearly hemispheric surface temperature and global ocean heat content as a function of historical radiative forcing. This deterministic model is combined with an empirical, stochastic model and fitted to observations on global temperature and ocean heat content, conditioned on estimates of historical radiative forcing. [...]

What Bernsten et. al. are doing is trying to make the most of historical observations. It should be noted that we have observations in detail over just about a century.

The problem is that we know from paleoclimatology that long term, multi-century and multi-millennial changes in temperature produce a "climate sensitivity" (a metric defined as the temperature change for doubling CO2) that is larger than the measurements over the century that we have of observations of the current times.

Bernsten is not a nut and what he is doing is not false, but the deniers want to ignore two things:

(1) Bernsten et. al. don't claim that they have modeled the very long term changes we see in the Pleistocene; and

(2) the deniers ignore that the range (presumptively 1 standard deviation) given by Bernsten for climate sensitivity, 1.3 to 2.9C, significantly overlaps the range given for the 1 standard deviation from the models (reported by Reuters as 2.0 to 4.5C). If we were to take a 2 standard deviation range I suspect the two would nearly completely overlap.

But statistics isn't a strong suit with the wingnut deniers, as Nate Silver so ably demonstrated.

Alas, all of this is probably irrelevant anyway as the US and most of the world's nations aren't really going to cut back significantly on emissions anyway, and the deniers are simply trying to make up for their own inadequacies by snickering at those commie scientimists...

I thought it was 75

The 2006 Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act requires the USPS to pre-fund 75 years of future healthcare benefits over a 10-year period, introducing a $5.5 billion annual payment.

Totally ridiculous. They're required to fund care and retirement for employees who aren't even born yet.

No we didn't do it to make fun of Benghazi, I'm not making light of the death of four Americans who served their country with honor.

We did it to mock the attempts by Fox news and the rest of the right wing media to turn it into an anti-administration scandal. The constant steady drumbeat of Benghazi...Benghazi...Benghazi in their "reporting" often based on hearsay and outright fabrication of the facts.

Mythical laser target designators, armed drones, stand down orders, a general arrested for trying to help, AC-130H mission aborted, Seals called off, etc, etc...none of it true. Their willingness to publish outright lies from questionable sources that no journalist with integrity would touch without an independent means of verification is appalling.

It was little more than them daily throwing any mud they could find or think up at the president and praying that some of it would stick. That is what, I at least, am mocking.

Republican Reckoning Begins After Revealing Defeat

Republican Party leaders on Wednesday began picking up the pieces of their movement, trying to figure how to put them back together.

The GOP was blindsided Tuesday, but also revealed. The Democrats' ground organization was beyond anything they'd imagined, pulling in new voters with stunning effectiveness. It exposed a major weakness in the Republican approach to winning elections, practically and intellectually.

"I don't think anyone on our side understood or comprehended how good their turnout was going to be," said Henry Barbour, a Republican committee man from Mississippi. "The Democrats do voter registration like a factory, like a business, and Republicans tend to leave it to the blue hairs."

But President Barack Obama's triumphant get-out-the-vote program also pulled back the curtain on the GOP's looming demographic demise. The exposure was so severe that there will be few inside the party who can deny the need to work toward immigration reform, as well the need to make a broader effort to communicate to parts of the electorate that the party has not tried to in the past.

Greets and saluts from the battered, broken, but not beaten NYC metro area. Yesterday's storm is wrapping up on Long Island, but some of us had to dig out of a major snowfall. Parts of NJ saw more than a foot of snow, including parts of Monmouth County that saw heavy damage from Sandy.

Power outages spiked once again during and after this snowstorm as trees and branches damaged by Sandy fell and took out power lines with them.

The commute last night was awful. Major delays for the LIRR and NJ Transit buses - we were at the PABT where the lines snaked through the building but there were no buses coming in because of an accident or other delay (no one could ever quite figure that one out because there's no reception/internet access in the bowels of the building so if the Port Authority sent out alerts, it didn't reach those on line). We quit the line and went to dinner instead. Best move of the night - because after imbibing and meeting up with legalbgl, we returned to the bus gates and found no lines and no traffic. That was quite the relief.

The temps are supposed to rise, so this will be a short lived snow cover, but it only adds to the misery of those without power (or those who had power and lost it).

Republican Reckoning Begins After Revealing Defeat

But its the democratic base that are the lazy freeloaders unwilling to put in a hard days work. I think this excerpt is quite telling. Like any organization whether a business, a non profit or a governmental institution, success is often measured by those at the top but is built on the work of all the participants. The line workers, the middle management, the senior management and the executives. Each has a role to play and I have never seen an organization have success without success being bred at every level. When Obama said "you didnt build that" he was speaking of exactly that mentality. Getting out the vote is no different. It is down in the gutters work. Knocking on doors, making calls, convincing neighbours, driving people to polls. It is not deciding in a board room what ad to run when and on what network. There is a role for both but you can't win looking after only one side of the balance sheet. Same goes for America.

Way to go FEMA...

FEMA Closes Hurricane Assistance Shelters Due To Current Storm

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is here to help you in the event of a natural or man-made disaster, provided, of course, it isn't raining or snowing or too windy out. DNAinfo snapped this photo at a closed FEMA assistance center on Staten Island today, and on a conference call with reporters hours later, FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate confirmed that some Hurricane Sandy-related FEMA operations "had to be secured or postponed during the storm."

FEMA and the Red Cross are both curtailing operations on Staten Island, Coney Island, and the Rockways at the moment because of the Nor'Easter now blowing through town. Fugate told reporters, "We are going to resume when weather permits. We are really concerned with people who are still displaced and have damaged homes, and if this [new storm] will make it worse." Officials say operations are being limited for the safety of FEMA and Red Cross workers.

Meanwhile while FEMA takes some time off during the snow storm 662,000 remain without power on the East Coast.

That's pretty disingenuous. They're not 'taking time off'...they're waiting for the storm to pass so they can be ready to reopen when it's safe for people to move about. By the way, this is standard procedure in emergency relief situations. FEMA aren't first responders, and shouldn't be encouraging people to move around at the height of a storm. Stay out of the way until the storm passes, and then you can help people more effectively.

This even happens in Anchorage Alaska BTW, where people drive on snow/Ice for about seven months of each year. The first major snowfall in Anchorage turns the roads into a giant game of bumper cars, it never fails. It as if almost everyone forgets that snow is slippery and they need to slow down and leave more following room.

I would drive around laughing at the spectacle as people slid out into the middle of intersections, chain reaction rear enders occurred at red lights, and people slid off roadways left and right. I read of a case on the Autobahn in Germany where a fellow plowed into the end of a traffic back-up because the low-hanging evening sun coming out from behind a cloud blinded him...which goes to prove that come rain, snow or shine, people drive like idiots!

Well, you're wrong. Keeping the center open during the storm invites more problems. FEMA isn't a first-responder center, and treating it as such is silly. The point of the FEMA office is not to provide a shelter for people to huddle in. In fact, keeping the offices-- which are for signing and coordinating volunteers-- open during the storm would cause more problems than it'd serve.

The city has a lot of shelters set up for the purpose of being shelters.

To be blunt, it looks like you're simply taking the story without bothering to think about it in the least and whining about it because you think it'll make FEMA look bad. It doesn't, to anyone who's willing to think about it for more than two seconds.

re: #337 NJDhockeyfan

Wait a sec. You're blaming FEMA for protecting itself and its personnel from a Nor'easter that was expected to cause additional damage. FEMA has operations set up in places like Midland Beach Staten Island where they're operating out of a tent in a park adjacent to a beach.

High tide plus noreaster equals potential flooding in those kinds of locations.

Flooding does not go well with equipment like generators, trucks, cars, etc. - and that could expose those to damage/total loss.

It was prudent for FEMA to close up for the storm- and it's not like people can't get FEMA assistance. 1-800-621-FEMA lets you talk with reps 24/7 and get disaster assistance applications underway.

Utilities likewise don't try to restore power during storms, particularly when winds are over 40 mph (well, that's by law/regulation to protect the workers from dangerous conditions) - that would put the truck crews in danger from high winds.

FEMA will be right back out there this morning.

Nontroversy.

It is an assistance center where you fill out paperwork, not a shelter. WTF are you talking about?

Ohh, I see...from the article you cited...

Repeated calls to confirm the locations of Red Cross shelters in NYC proved fruitless, and according to the current Red Cross Shelter map, there is only one shelter in NYC, on Staten Island. Red Cross recommends calling 311 to find out the location of warming centers.

The only problem with that is that it is completely wrong...actual, for real, shelter map...

The really big government successes from Sandy came before the storm actually hit.

Though government funding of science, whether in education or in buying the actual equipment, we were able to get early warning of the unusual course of the hurricane and its power.

Because of that, we were able to notify people in the most vulnerable areas and get them evacuated. People in the at-risk areas were able to stock up on supplies. Because of the predictions, the emergency teams knew where they would have to go afterwards.

Those two things-- effective evacuation and good prediction-- are the main ways that government saved everyone's bacon.

Spending by independent groups had little election impact, analysis finds

Spending by outside groups, it turns out, was the dog that barked but did not bite. Obama and other Democrats had long made dire predictions about the potential impact of the Supreme Court’s 2010 decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which allowed corporations and unions to spend unlimited money on elections and created a new class of wealthy political groups.
...
If either Romney or Obama had held a substantial cash advantage, it is possible that one candidate could have dominated in the final weeks of the campaign. But the two camps were roughly evenly matched by the end. The result was a kind of dreary equilibrium, as both sides clogged the airwaves with so many attack ads that Republicans began airing spots in California and other deep-blue states.

New York Craigslist Users Making Unethical Bargains for Gas

Hurricane Sandy has made getting gas in New York and New Jersey hell on earth, but things may have bottomed out, finally. New York Craigslist users appear to be whoring themselves out in exchange for gas. The site's Casual Encounters section reveals several people in the area offering sexual favors in exchange for gas.

It's truly a sad day when gas and prostitution cross paths, but alas, there's a black market for everything.

It's a Red Queen scenario. Spending from one side drives spending from the other, as well as GOTV efforts and such like. It's all a bunch of massively wasted money, which is almost ironic given that a lot of what it's being spent on is complaining about money being wasted.

In addition, it means that those without the ability to spend are more and more marginalized-- free speech, politically, becomes the property of the wealthy, and those without sufficient money have their free speech practically limited.

Charlie Sheen accused of issuing death threat...

That seems likely.

A man who claims to be a former associate of the Anger Management star filed a police report in Los Angeles on October 18, alleging he is afraid the actor will murder him, based on a text message sent to a mutual friend.

The man said he had recently fallen out with Charlie and claims the actor later sent a text to a female pal that read: 'I'll blow his head off with my Super 90.'

The case is currently under investigation, and officers are planning to speak to the 47-year-old actor about the claims very soon.

While Charlie hasn't commented on the accusation, a friend has claimed the man is looking for money. That also seems likely.

Oh, and FEMA cannot do jack unless and until the Governor makes a formal request. (The term is "Stafford Act." It was a wingnut act to prevent an underhanded martial law to federalization coup against local government.)

True....it is all controlled by NIMS which is the National Incident Management System which is under Homeland Security. State and local authorities are required to adopt NIMS to get any federal assistance. NIMS gives authority locally (police and cities) and then scales it upward depending on the size of the emergency. But even with the largest events and FEMA involved, NIMS still does not supersede local authority's role in their jurisdiction.

re: #416 Big Steve

This is a really good point about FEMA and it always drives me a little crazy when there is an emergency and FEMA is blamed for not having shelters open, or bottled water, or the power back on. By law and statue the management of all emergencies is local. FEMA's role really comes after the initial stabilization phase.

As it ought to be! One wouldn't expect a federal agency to do a very good job of handling the lowest-level, most detailed and granular local emergency tasks anyway. They're not, y'know, locals. They don't know the area, the people, or the intricacies of the local situation. They will be good at medium- and high-level coordination of logistics and different organization of agencies, because that's something that has more to do with practice and experience than locality, and it's not something at which the locals will be practiced.

Large organizations handle the big picture, small organizations handle the small picture, because that's what they're both good at. It's just basic common sense, or at least it should be.

The effect was at least as dramatic in swing states, most notably in Colorado, which Obama won on Tuesday. There Latinos went for the president by an astounding 87-10 margin, an edge not far from the near-monolithic support he received from African American voters. In Ohio, with a smaller but still significant Latino population, Obama won by an 82-17 margin.

Douchebag alert...

Bill Maher compares Romney campaign to last days of Nazi Germany

Comedian Bill Maher Wednesday compared election night at the Romney campaign to the final days in Nazi Germany.

Appearing on MSNBC’s "Hardball with Chris Matthews," Maher offered what he thought Mitt Romney aides were saying to the candidate as they learned the election results.

“I think they were still saying ‘yes Mein Fuhrer, you still have twelve divisions on the eastern front’ — I mean, until they actually heard the artillery,” he said, likening the Romney campaign's last moments to Nazi leadership's belief they could win until they had already been defeated.

“I guess I should stop with the Hitler analogies,” Maher, who is of Jewish heritage, continued.

“I think Hitler never works myself,” Matthews added.

Earlier in the interview Maher made another Nazi reference when asked if Republican strategist and Fox News contributor Karl Rove is the last person to “admit if something new is happening.”

“It was a little Hitler’s bunker, wasn’t it? I really wanted to rush in with a cyanide capsule there,” Maher said. Referring to the 2004 German film "Downfall," Maher continued, “I thought he was gonna say ‘I do not want to live in a world without National Socialism’ — OK Mrs. Goebbels.”

"Downfall" has been the subject of many parodies, known as “Hitler Reacts,” that feature a scene in the bunker where Hitler is told that he was going to lose the war.

Nazis? Hitler? Hey Bill Maher, go FY.

Good morning. Thanks for the promo, Charles. I didn't expect that for this one (I guess I never do).

I want to add two notes.

Bonus points to Decatur Deb. He had multiple entries in my 'how it's done' file, and still doesn't know whether it fully paid off or not. I'm sure it sent a message, whatever the ultimate result.

And special kudos to Obdicut, because his was the first entry in my 'how it's done' file. I didn't include it above because it's not election related. It's what you do between elections to make it work. Since we are now between elections, it is highly relevant.

And the way to combat this [the political mess around climate change], beyond attempting to live a life that's restrained in its use of resources, is to write to your congresspeople, your senators, your representatives-- at every level-- to your governor, the president, to absolutely everyone you can think of, and tell them how important this issue is to you.

Speak up when you hear scientists slandered, direct people to good resources like [Link: [Link: www.skepticalscience.org....]...] Stress that we can do something about the problem, and that if we don't take the lead in green energy, China will, and America will lose its dominance in the world. Stress that green energy means jobs, and black energy means the loss of jobs.

This is about climate change. There are many other issues where the same strategy can be put to use.

Let's get to work.

Conor Friedersdorf states the obvious:

How Conservative Media Lost to the MSM and Failed the Rank and File

Before rank-and-file conservatives ask, "What went wrong?", they should ask themselves a question every bit as important: "Why were we the last to realize that things were going wrong for us?"

Barack Obama just trounced a Republican opponent for the second time. But unlike four years ago, when most conservatives saw it coming, Tuesday's result was, for them, an unpleasant surprise. So many on the right had predicted a Mitt Romney victory, or even a blowout -- Dick Morris, George Will, and Michael Barone all predicted the GOP would break 300 electoral votes. Joe Scarborough scoffed at the notion that the election was anything other than a toss-up. Peggy Noonan insisted that those predicting an Obama victory were ignoring the world around them. Even Karl Rove, supposed political genius, missed the bulls-eye. These voices drove the coverage on Fox News, talk radio, the Drudge Report, and conservative blogs.

Those audiences were misinformed.

Outside the conservative media, the narrative was completely different. Its driving force was Nate Silver, whose performance forecasting Election '08 gave him credibility as he daily explained why his model showed that President Obama enjoyed a very good chance of being reelected. Other experts echoed his findings. Readers of The New York Times, The Atlantic, and other "mainstream media" sites besides knew the expert predictions, which have been largely born out. The conclusions of experts are not sacrosanct. But Silver's expertise was always a better bet than relying on ideological hacks like Morris or the anecdotal impressions of Noonan.

Sure, Silver could've wound up wrong. But people who rejected the possibility of his being right? They were operating at a self-imposed information disadvantage.

Fucking douche. Latinos have a problem, and their problem is that half of the political leadership in their own country doesn't think they're worth the fucking time of day.

Actually, that's basically what he said - just phrased differently.

In my experience the racists are a minority of the party. However, they're loud and tend to get some things done. They also claim credit for various actions not intended to be racist but which could be used in that fashion.

Consider for example how every frigging immigration bill used pictures of non-whites. No, we don't have illegal Europeans here, not at all. (Personally I think the whole immigration thing is overdone - I'm actually in favor of significant opening. But the point is the focus makes it appear racist whether intended as such or not.)

They're just as delusional as your typical Freeper, it's just that they use bigger words and spend more time stroking their own egos.

Lopez isn't delusional, and there's a lot of good stuff on NR today. Here, have some:

This election was more than just a race between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, more than just a battle between liberalism and conservatism. It was a race between two different visions of what the American electorate looks like. Democrats saw the race through the lens of the “emerging Democratic majority.” Rising numbers of minority voters — and a corresponding declining white vote — meant that Democrats were playing with the wind at their backs. Add to that young voters, upscale professionals, and single women, and you have a pretty durable coalition that could push President Obama across the finish line despite the stagnant economy.

On the other hand, Republicans saw this as a “Silent Majority” election. They were trying to refight the 1980s, putting together the political coalition that gave the country the Reagan Revolution: evangelicals, working-class white Catholic “Reagan Democrats,” small businessmen, and rural voters. Conservative pundits kept saying that polls were wrong because they oversampled Democrats and ignored Republican enthusiasm. They seemed to argue that the polls were missing potential GOP voters who would show up on Election Day and oust Obama.

Unfortunately, we can now safely say which vision won in yesterday’s election. There was no silent majority of right-leaning voters to take Romney across the finish line. The white vote continued to decline, from 74 percent in 2008 to 72 percent in 2012, while the Hispanic vote went from around 7 percent to around 10 percent. Exit polls showed that women were 53 percent of the electorate this time around. Obama had an 11-point lead among women, while Romney had only a 7-point lead among men.

Republicans misunderstood the enthusiasm they were seeing among Romney supporters. It’s true that there was a great deal of energy on the GOP side, as seen by the large crowds Romney attracted to his campaign events. However, your base can be as energized as possible, but if it is a declining percentage of the overall electorate, there is not much that you can do.

April 15th 1961 just doesn't mean as much as it used to...

Definitely right up near the top of the strangest moments in American history list though. How the CIA tried to force the United States into a war with Cuba to save 1400 Cuban Americans that they had trained to invade Cuba. Poor suckers had been assured that the U.S. would back them once they were ashore too.

Strange days that...

Lopez isn't delusional, and there's a lot of good stuff on NR today. Here, have some:

Republicans misunderstood the enthusiasm they were seeing among Romney supporters. It’s true that there was a great deal of energy on the GOP side, as seen by the large crowds Romney attracted to his campaign events. However, your base can be as energized as possible, but if it is a declining percentage of the overall electorate, there is not much that you can do.

Hence the GOP's present dilemma, because they simply can't divorce themselves from their base with the expectation that it will reap greater rewards with moderate voters. Why? Because those moderate voters came out for the GOP in '10 on promises of focus on jobs and bipartisanship, and instead got a focus on ladyparts, overturning Obama's apple cart, and a debt limit fight that led to a credit downgrade. Fool me once...

Think in large part it's come down to the reality that the GOP finds itself in the same position a lot of former parties did before they went the way of disco: A shrinking party base that is totally resistant to change and rapidly shifting voter demographics. The days of white male dominance of politics are swiftly ending and the GOP has no way of adapting to that without losing its identity.

The problem is that the GOP thinks the problem is not a matter of skin color, but rather that the people with colors other than white don't realize that the GOP is the "good guys." Look at this past election season and you see plenty of gripes about how Democrats have black people on "the plantation," about how Latinos should "naturally" be Republicans because they're religious and family-oriented, and that women voters don't understand that the the "war on women" is a fantasy that Democrats concocted to scare women away from the GOP.

re: #495 Dark_Falcon

Lopez isn't delusional

Lopez is delusional.

How What Happened Happened

It’s hard to hold back a tsunami of secularism in a single election.

Politically, culturally, economically, this may, in fact, be exactly what some of us saw it as: a paradigm-shifting election. For those of us concerned about freedom as we have understood it, it only gets harder now. I’m not happy about the results of this presidential election, but is it all that surprising when one side marches confidently forward in the arenas of politics, in media, in culture, embracing, celebrating, insisting on, mandating a “new normal”?

The lesson is not to be less conservative. The lesson is not to be found in purging social conservatives. The lesson is in taking a look at how the radicals won: Yes, there was the fear element. There was the devil-you-know element. But there is also the fact that all of what they say seems plausible and even not all that radical, because it has been in our cultural milk. Because while they may obscure some of the details and make it all sound mainstream, at the same time they are bold and confident about the extreme positions they believe in. That’s what we’ve got to be.

[...]

But I am thinking of my late friend Andrew Breitbart this morning: He knew they knew the stakes, and looked at his kids, and knew the stakes too. In all our different roles, we have to live like what we believe to be true really is true. My friend Greg Burke recently talked about the “courage of coherence” and I think that is our most potent tool in winning the future, to borrow a phrase.

I actually think there were some steps in the right direction. But not enough, clearly. And that “not enough” has to do with the fact, again, that politics alone will never be our route to civilizational success. We need to make great art that uplifts the spirit. We need to feed a generation wanting something better, supporting their desires to avoid repeating the preceding generation’s model of family life. We need to teach, inspire, feed. We need to rebuild, starting with the basics of what works and what we believe, telling that story with confidence, enthusiasm, and love.

[...]

She doesn't address the fact that people are abandoning what she considers good culture because they don't want it, not because they aren't familiar with it. She doesn't address the racism, homophobia, and sexism inherent in the right wing, which is a big part of 'How what happened happened'.

But 57 states is the reference more people know. I'm no fan of Freepers, but you need to remember that most Freepers know of Stormfront but don't visit the site. They likely don't know of that use of "Heinz 57". For that matter, I hadn't heard it before just now.

Both President Obama and leaders in Congress stated that they would back PR statehood if it was "clear" that Puerto Ricans wanted it.

The construction of the PR ballot suggests to me that those in control were looking for anything but a "clear" signal.

They were looking to dilute the PPD votes (pro-status quo). Once the status quo was out of the equation, statehood wins easily, in great part because of the awfully bad pro-independence and the effective anti-independence campaign.

Surface gravity would go linearly with planetary mass, but with the inverse square of planetary radius. Depending on the density of the planet, it could indeed be habitable even with a 7x mass factor over Earth, although I don't think such a construct is physically plausible from a composition point-of-view.

Mr. Gelertner recognizes that, whatever that socialist America-hater in the White House says about being “more than a collection of red states and blue states,” we really are in the midst of a “slow-motion civil war.” Except unlike crazy liberals who think it’s time to cut the former Confederacy loose, Gelertner says that

The blue states want to secede not from America but from Americanism. They reject the American republic of God-fearing individuals in favor of the European ideal, which has only been government by aristocracy: either an aristocracy of birth or, nowadays, of ruling know-it-alls — of post-religious, globalist intellectuals (a.k.a. MLB Free Agent Delmon Young Sentenced to Some Hard Time at the Museum of Tolerance for Using Anti-Semitic Slur

Looks like Major League Baseball player Delmon Young is about to get his mouth washed out with some tolerance.

Young pleaded guilty yesterday to an aggravated harassment charge stemming from an April incident in Manhattan where he shouted an anti-Semitic slur at a group of four men and then tackled one of them to the ground, according to a release from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.

The altercation occurred outside of the Hilton New York hotel in Midtown during the early morning hours of April 27. Young's shitty behavior has earned him 10 days of community service and enrollment in the restorative justice program at the Museum of Tolerance New York.

And, Yes.The Museum of Tolerance New York is real.

Young will be just the fourth individual to participate in the program since its inception. The museum is working in conjunction with the Manhattan DA's Hate Crimes Unit on the project.

Who wants more gibberish?

GELERNTER: American culture had its throat slit and bled to death at our feet. Isn’t that revolutionary enough? The blood is only metaphorical, but to the 40 percent of [all] infants [who are] born to single mothers this year, the consequences will be real.

In a piddling few decades, the world’s most powerful, influential cultural establishment happened to get demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. What had been basically a Christian, patriotic, family-loving, politically moderate part of society became contemptuous of biblical religion, of patriotism, of the family, of American greatness. The American cultural elite used to resemble (more or less) the rest of America. Today it disdains the rest of America. That’s a revolution.

Example: Look at (just) the arts in 1960 vs. 1990. In 1960, the whole country knew Robert Frost’s poetry; Leonard Bernstein was reaching large TV audiences for classical music with his Young People’s Concerts on CBS; theater and ballet were thriving, reaching larger audiences all the time; Hemingway was only the most famous of America’s serious novelists; and American avant-garde painting was a topic for Life magazine. (And European artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, and Giacometti were international celebrities.) In 1990, silence. High culture had become a term to laugh at. No blood; no mandates. Just an empty lot covered with weeds where the art used to be.

We breathe a sigh of relief — and go on turning out pre-programming, left-tilting airheads, class after class. The exact same thing happens if Romney wins. Obama has become a four-alarm fire in this dangerous world and we must beat him. Even so, America herself will win only when we get rid of our dangerously infected schools and universities and get new ones. In the long run, I am all for Harvard and Yale and Princeton coming back strong — but only after losing the best students year after year to Internet colleges — a string of losses that will change their whole worldview. Internet colleges won’t teach right-wing history to make up for today’s ubiquitous left-wing history. They’ll just teach history.

650 Gus  Thu, Nov 8, 2012 10:08:56am

LOPEZ: How are “self-hating WASPS . . . as important a phenomenon as self-hating Jews”?

GELERNTER: In 1945, WASPs ran our powerful colleges and the cultural elite. No one could force them aside. The feds had yet to dig their nails deep into university flesh. Civil-rights laws were weak. The weather reports all said “increasing liberalism”; that was the mood of the times. Nonetheless, socially prominent WASPs looked at these institutions their ancestors had built, funded, and supplied with art and money and books and buildings — and stepped aside.

In the who really cares, but slightly interesting column

The two worst rated pollsters for the 2012 election (yet most cited) are the only two that continue daily tracking for presidential approval

Today...
Gallup:
Approve - 49
Disapprove - 44

Rasmussen:
Approve - 52
Disapprove - 47

Both have become laughingstocks. Don't know who, think it might have been Silver, who wondered aloud after this election, why anybody would put any weight in the polls those two churn out.

New plan. Start a conservative superpac for 2014. Raise $50 million. Spend $40 million on "issue" ads in "strategic" markets. Blame the conservative base for not coming out in sufficient numbers in the aftermath, and repeat for 2016. Then retire.

Bill O'Reilly: Unlike Hispanic voters, black voters will always pick the "colored-based candidate" mm4a.org/T9E2Gf

Obviously this is why black voters were not stalwart Democrats until the advent of Barack Obama's campaign.

And then he'll accuse them of bigotry as soon as it gets pointed out to him that black voters no doubt largely supported Allan West's opponent who has an even more Irish sounding name than Bill. But hey keep up the race baiting Bill, it just makes you sound terrific. And this asshole has claimed to be in the past an admirer of RFK. Yeah fucking right.

Jesus H. Christ. I mean, I'm used to politotrash 'books' committing some pretty egregious abuses of the English language to try to be pithy for their target audience (complete morons), but this is an entirely new level. This isn't abusing the language, this is dragging it into a dark alley and violently assaulting it.

Porgis, is he fucking serious?

This is why conservatism will continue to fail. The Broad Brush.

Beck is so far inside the bubble, he's the one who's truly lost. And he doesn't realize it and never will.

Which of course clearly explains why we Republicans want to help eliminate the last remnants by getting rid of PBS...

It is a a platform plank. It's a wait and see on this. Will the blank votes be counted?

I don't think they should. If they didn't offer an opinion, they didn't have one, according to the ballot.
