The right wing universe is now in full-bore conspiracy theory mode over the resignation of CIA Director David Petraeus, just as I predicted. It’s a case study in the conservative movement’s decline into bad craziness; they’re all muttering darkly about cover-ups and hidden connections and “questioning the timing.”

One of the most brain-dead of the wingnuts, loony hateblogger Pamela Geller, has a typical post on the subject; for her it’s all part of the Islamic supremacist stealth shariah takeover of America, of course:

I do not believe it was the real reason was [sic] an extramarital affair. I believe it was Benghazi. He refused to be the fall guy. When did an affair ever stop a Democrat. If anything….

This is unrelated, but I'm still not understanding why mail-in voting has recently become some kind of liberal cause. I'm seeing people talking it up all over the internet.

Remember, in Ohio, black voters were more likely to deliver their absentee vote in person rather than through the mail, as the Republican Secretary of State was trying to mandate. There's a reason for that.

In Florida, the OfA strategy was to push mail and early voting, simply as a way to subvert the attempt to suppress voting through a ballot of up to 11 pages. The GOP legislature had the full text of all 11 amendments on the ballot, and local government added their issues. We knew the lines would be unmanageable on election day.

The recipient of the e-mails was so frightened that she went to the FBI for protection and help tracking down the sender, according to the officials. The FBI investigation traced the threats to Paula Broadwell, a former military officer and a Petraeus biographer, and uncovered explicit e-mails between Broadwell and Petraeus, the officials said.

When Petraeus’s name first surfaced, FBI investigators were concerned that the CIA director’s personal e-mail account had been hacked and security had been breached. But the sexual nature of the e-mails led them to conclude that Petraeus and Broadwell were engaged in an affair, the officials said.

The identity of the woman who received the e-mails was not disclosed, and the nature of her relationship with Petraeus is unknown. The law enforcement officials said the e-mails indicated that Broadwell perceived the other woman as a threat to her relationship with Petraeus.

With an assertion like that, I'd like to see one instance where the Obama campaign said anything at all about women getting thrown into "rape camps". The embassy wasn't correctly guarded. Hillary took responsibility, when I guess some people think it should have gone to the top. She did what Eric Holder refuses to do in Fast and Furious. She protected the Oval Office.

It's all bullshit propaganda. I mistake happened. It was Libya, basically a war-zone. I might take it all seriously if it happened in England or Australia, but I think all involved knew the risks

Once the FBI started investigating Petraeus' girlfriend, and his name was brought into it (and the possibility of his computer being compromised)... it put his security clearance in automatic temporary abeyance. A 17-year-old girl was shot during a break in earlier in the year, but it turns out she had arranged the whole thing with the two gunmen, and got caught in the crossfire and killed. The owner of the house was apparently into drugs, and *he* in turn was found dead in a burning SUV last week. They've since arrested the two people who killed him, and one of them has the same last name as the house owner victim, but isn't related. Investigation is still ongoing. All we need yet is a tie-in to a state legislator somehow, and we have a Coen brothers movie.

Remember, in Ohio, black voters were more likely to deliver their absentee vote in person rather than through the mail, as the Republican Secretary of State was trying to mandate. There's a reason for that.

It's become popular because it works. Here in Washington and Oregon we've all been doing it for years now. You get your ballot at home to fill out at your leisure, with no standing in line for hours. If you don't trust the mail to get it back, there are places offered to, yes, drop it off in person. Can it be subverted? Yes, but so can any process involving humans, as Ohio has shown this year.

What I'm taking issue with is the insistence that it is a more failsafe method of voting, while ignoring historical trends and voter preferences. Washington and Oregon don't have a history of voter intimidation. Furthermore, you are assuming that communities in other states have a vested interest in seeing minorities and poor people vote.

The best system, I think, is one that gives people more than one way to cast their ballots, but I'm not going to hold my breath as the Supreme Court seems on the verge of striking down the Voting Rights Act.

EDIT: We'll have a better idea how other states handle it if Arizona doesn't make a hash out of it. There are still more than 400,000 outstanding ballots out there.

Testimony came from long-time close associates like George Hincapie. It's pretty clear Lance used performance enhancing drugs. What that does to one's opinion of him can still vary, though. He still has a lot of loyal fans. It's possible to not condemn a guy who was the best in the sport in all its aspects, including illicit medical aspects, and including dodging the consequences for so long.

It's a voters cause AFAIK. I love it. It's a first line of defense against most shenanigans. It's great on several levels. When you apply for it you get an early chance to fix anything like if you need to re register. That keeps you safer from registration purging. You get the ballot well enough in advance you can take your time with it. Accuracy, no rush. Then for the price of a stamp you send it in or as mentioned drop it off at any polling place. Not necessarily the one near your home. Maybe a convenient one near work or the commute. The helps protect you from all the "find the new polling place" inconvenience, long lines or heck any of us can get sick in flu season right? Some polling places are in sketchy neighborhoods.

On the macro level, if you take the entire campaign at its face value as a business - a job creator, even? - the Obama campaign had a higher return on investment, ran a better strategy, implemented better tools and metrics to achieve its targets, spent its money more wisely, had a more efficient staff org chart and better managers. In the free market system, it was a strikingly successful example of entrepreneurial acumen. Romney and Rove were beat at their own game.

When I clicked the response box that I could not attend a window popped up giving me several alternatives to helping the campaign such as making phone calls. Get out the vote opportunities continued to pop up in my email the remaining weeks of the campaign.

On election day, I got several text messages from OFA asking me to make a few calls. Can you make 5 calls? No. Can you make 3 calls? No. Can you make 1 call? Yes. That's a ground game.

That isn't a problem. It is a problem if they are sending Bibles translated in kurdu and farsi to the overseas troops and asking them to hand them out. Which happened BTW even though regulations strictly forbid proselytizing by the troops of people in the "host" countries. It wasn't the Gideons though, it was a group of evangelical churches.

They raised a big stink when the military burnt the bibles...

One recent BBC documentary which I missed is "Conspiracy Road Trip: Creationism", about which John Hawks blogged today, pointing to a Jerry Coyne piece, who in turned pointed to a Prothero piece in which the latter described his experience in making the show:

[...] None of them could give coherent answers to the scientific evidence, yet nonetheless were determined to stick with their beliefs. This was no surprise to any of us, since evidence doesn’t matter to creationists. They have an entire worldview which is wrapped about the salvation of their immortal soul and the fear of rejecting the literal interpretation of the Bible, so that comes first and everything else is unimportant. They reject evolution only because they’ve been told to do so by religious leaders, even though they have no clue what it’s about; what they think they know about it is wrong. Indeed, they showed the classic response of a true believer: when something threatens your worldview, you cling to it even more strongly and find any way you can to dismiss or ignore contrary evidence. That, apparently, is the point of the entire show, since the 9/11 truthers and the UFO nuts act the same way. Just like at first we heard this was about unauthorized access to Petraeus' email and possibly national secrets. Now we find out it was only emails sent by Broadwell that triggered the investigation.

I'm sticking by my bet, there is no story here except that after Petraeus stopped seeing her Broadwell flipped out and started emailing his wife.

But...

Suppose your right and it was another woman at the CIA, all that might mean is that Broadwell was jealous of her and thought Petraeus had stopped seeing her to be with this other woman. It doesn't mean it was in any way true, how many times have we all heard stories like this in the press? (usually because they end with someone getting hurt)

Scientists unlock nature's hydrogen secrets

Two Canberra scientists believe they have made a major breakthrough in how to best produce hydrogen which can be used as a clean and renewable energy source.

Professors Rob Stranger and Ron Pace from the Research School of Chemistry at the Australian National University (ANU) have used computer modelling to reveal the molecular structure of the photosynthesis reaction site in plants.

Professor Pace says the discovery takes a leaf out of nature's handbook, for the first time identifying the specific water molecules in a plant's photosystem that are converted into oxygen.

"Nature very early on in the evolutionary process on Earth figured out how to do this particular piece of chemistry with close to 100 per cent efficiency," he said.

Professor Stranger says the work offers clues as to how scientists can create alternative fuel.

"The part of the plant's photosystem that is important to this process is called the oxygen-evolving-complex (OEC)," he said.

"If we can steal nature's secrets and understand how the OEC performs its chemistry, then we can learn to make hydrogen much more efficiently, and hydrogen is the fuel for a totally renewable fuel future."

The supreme irony is that most Muslims could be pegged as social conservatives by any metric. In the main, they are pro-life, anti-gay rights, and have no problems with public displays of religion; and more than a few are (Old-Earth) Creationists. I guess I'm an exception to all that, but hey, that's just me. I believe in science, equality, and freedom of conscience. In any event, one would think that Muslims are natural GOP voters.

Of course, when the GOP demonizes them and many on the right voice openly exterminationist sentiments toward Muslims, it sort of alienates Muslims. Think the RWNJ's will realize this? Nah........never in a million years.

Gen. Petraeus, (Head of the C.I.A.) couldn't keep his dick in his pants and was found/sold out (compromised). Someone tried to take advantage of it and attempted to blackmail him. Doing the only honorable thing he could do in this situation, he let his superiors know what was going on and stepped down.

He can still be called before a Senate panel for questioning.

But as a civilian/non governmental entity, he has more wiggle room to tell the Star Chamber Squad to shove it up their ass.

Even though I call her a "nut", I don't discount her at all. In my view, both her and Spencer are dangerous; not themselves, personally, but what they can inspire in their acolytes.
