The effects in this are great, though. I love that spiraling horn effect at about a minute in.

Dark's somewhat right, defeat can knock sense (even temporarily) into ideologues heads. But it's also partly that the GOP right now is in a very untenable position. They're not going to get an extension of the top rates, because Obama will veto it. And they're the ones who will lose the most if we go over the cliff because they refused to deal.

I've heard the suggestion made that what the parties should do is just let Jan 1st come, let the rate cuts expire, then vote upon tax cuts for the middle class. That way, neither can accuse the other of voting to raise taxes.
Not that I expect that to happen, but I consider it probably the best scenario possible.

Plausible, but I foresee Boehner having a mini-rebellion on his hand. The natives (TPers) are very restless and an attempt to ram through such a bill would incite no small amount of anger. Politics in relation to chess... well cited!
Still, memory doesn't count with chess pawns, while it does with humans. I'd like a variation of the idea TP discussed:
Pass a short term fix on tings like the 'Medicare doc fix' and any matters that need to be done to allow people to file their taxes. That still lets the tax cuts expire. Use Christmas break to hold secret meetings, in which the deal will be hammered out. Then come back in January and pass the deal swiftly. A fast passage would move too fast for either sides grassroots to mount significant opposition. Strident base voters would shriek, but others would be glad the matter was resolved.
That makes too much sense to happen, alas. Of course if the Senate Majority Leader really does massively change the filibuster rules (which only needs a simple majority to achieve) all bets are off. Fear has a remarkable ability to concentrate even the most recalcitrant mind... ;)

Plausible, but I foresee Boehner having a mini-rebellion on his hand. The natives (TPers) are very restless and an attempt to ram through such a bill would incite no small amount of anger. It's largely a question of is Boehner willing to put his speakership on the line to reach any kind of deal with Democrats.
Hence your idea's merit, holding the vote after Boehner is voted back in as Speaker. It would still only work if he can be somewhat assured he would be thrown out. If it looks like he'd lose his Speakership, then he'll just hold firm.

My point is the whole religious right/ Tea Party pawns are very immobile (as far as their beliefs and votes), and that immobility shapes the political landscape in the US, within which the wheelers and dealers will cut their deals.
The Kristol thing about letting the Bush tax cuts expire on the wealthiest is like a minor gambit in chess - something with minor downside risks but more meaningful upside payoffs.

Did you read about the recent flap at Fordham College? Basically, Fordham College Republicans invited Coulter to speak on campus, but didn't expect the shitstorm that followed, so they "uninvited" her.
Here's the text of an e-mail that Father Joseph McShane, Fordham College's President, wrote about the Coulter appearance. It's pretty awesome:
The College Republicans, a student club at Fordham University, has invited Ann Coulter to speak on campus on November 29. The event is funded through student activity fees and is not open to the public nor the media. Student groups are allowed, and encouraged, to invite speakers who represent diverse, and sometimes unpopular, points of view, in keeping with the canons of academic freedom. Accordingly, the University will not block the College Republicans from hosting their speaker of choice on campus.
To say that I am disappointed with the judgment and maturity of the College Republicans, however, would be a tremendous understatement. There are many people who can speak to the conservative point of view with integrity and conviction, but Ms. Coulter is not among them. Her rhetoric is often hateful and needlessly provocative — more heat than light — and her message is aimed squarely at the darker side of our nature.
As members of a Jesuit institution, we are called upon to deal with one another with civility and compassion, not to sling mud and impugn the motives of those with whom we disagree or to engage in racial or social stereotyping. In the wake of several bias incidents last spring, I told the University community that I hold out great contempt for anyone who would intentionally inflict pain on another human being because of their race, gender, sexual orientation, or creed.
“Disgust” was the word I used to sum up my feelings about those incidents. Hate speech, name-calling, and incivility are completely at odds with the Jesuit ideals that have always guided and animated Fordham.
Still, to prohibit Ms. Coulter from speaking at Fordham would be to do greater violence to the academy, and to the Jesuit tradition of fearless and robust engagement. Preventing Ms. Coulter from speaking would counter one wrong with another. The old saw goes that the answer to bad speech is more speech. This is especially true at a university, and I fully expect our students, faculty, alumni, parents, and staff to voice their opposition, civilly and respectfully, and forcefully.
The College Republicans have unwittingly provided Fordham with a test of its character: do we abandon our ideals in the face of repugnant speech and seek to stifle Ms. Coulter’s (and the student organizers’) opinions, or do we use her appearance as an opportunity to prove that our ideas are better and our faith in the academy — and one another — stronger? We have chosen the latter course, confident in our community and in the power of decency and reason to overcome hatred and prejudice.

True. But even so Cutler was better protected than Chicago Blackhawk Marion Hossa was earlier this year when he took a blatantly illegal hit from a member of the Arizona Coyotes during the playoffs. A hit bad enough he still had not recovered by this summer and that the Coyote in question will spend the first to games of the next NHL season, whenever it is, even if next year, suspended. Football helmets are much better protection than hockey helmets.

ok, DF, here's what I sent:
Watching the Chicago/Houston game and chatting over the internet with a good friend, I was highly upset by the illegal hit that took Cutler out of the game. I'm a Packer fan and half the fun of watching a Bears game with my friend is giving him grief. This, however, remains out of the bounds of sportsmanship.
He commented that it might prove to be a real deterrent if the a player responsible for an illegal hit had to sit for the _same_ amount of time that the injured player was forced to be out of the game. I thought this was an excellent idea and that he should tell you so. I also said I'd write as well.
You have an ear at the NFL that the fans do not. Please help us to be heard in this issue.

Spokesman: House majority leader knew of Petraeus matter in October
House majority leader Eric Cantor talked to an FBI official in late October about former CIA Director David Petraeus' involvement in an affair, a spokesman for the congressman told CNN Sunday.
Doug Heye said Cantor had a conversation with the whistleblower about the affair and national security concerns involved in the matter.
The New York Times reported Saturday that on October 31, Cantor's chief of staff phoned the FBI to inform the agency about the call between the congressman and the FBI official. The Times reported Cantor learned of the whistleblower through Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Washington.
A spokeswoman for Reichert told CNN Sunday that the Times article was accurate but that the congressman had no further comment on his involvement in the case.
Petraeus' affair came to light when an FBI investigation looked into a complaint that his biographer, Paula Broadwell, was sending harassing e-mails to another woman close to the retired four-star general, a U.S. official told CNN Saturday.

Most of the questions were started under his own Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, during the Democratic Primaries. Called, "Birthers" by the liberal news media as a means to discredit them, these people eventually succeeded in pushing Obama to release his long form birth certificate only to find out through an investigation of the Maricopa Police Department that the document was a fake. Recently it was discovered that Obama had been a citizen of Indonesia when raised by his mother abroad. What is all this?? Obama has spent millions to keep his college transcripts sealed among other things. What is he hiding? There has been no definitive conclusion to this investigation. No court will touch it and no member of Washington on the Hill will consider it; the political fallout is too great. We may never know. This is either the biggest misunderstanding or biggest lie ever perpetuated upon the American people.

I like NCIS-Los Angeles much better than NCIS-DC. For one thing, "Ziva" totally does not speak like an Israeli. For another thing, LL Cool J is HOT! And that little old lady (Linda Hunt) KICKS ASS.
Linda Hunt kicks ass pretty much in everything she does. I still recall her in "Silverado". Amazing actress. She was the best thing about "Kindergarten Cop", too.
And the whole Ziva arc is ridiculous. Ziva does not sound Israeli, and Ziva does not act much like an Israeli, but boy, she is easy on the eyes. (Also, the whole backstory with Ziva never made any sense whatsoever. I especially like the part where they're all talking about how smart the Mossad director was to have a son with a Palestinian woman because, hey, insta-undercover agent! I'm sitting there thinking, "He was raised by his mother in the West Bank. There are no special Israeli genes that activate when you're eighteen and make you want to work for Mossad." And they pronounce her brother's name Ay-Ree, which confused me for weeks until I realized it's "Ari", and everyone, even he, is pronouncing it weird.)
But I still like the DC cast and story line best.

1/3 of it is held by the richest 1%.
If we were to go full-bore socialist and simply seize 90% of what the wealthiest 1% owns, they and their offspring would still have enough to live very comfortably their entire lives without ever working another day, and we could pay off the entire national debt and cover next year's deficit.

Alleged Petraeus Mistress Suggested She Was Privy to State Secrets (with video)
Speaking on Oct. 26 at the University of Denver, Paula Broadwell—the married author of the highly favorable biography of Petraeus All In—was asked about the 9/11 anniversary attack.
“Now I don’t know if a lot of you heard this,” she replied, “but the CIA annex had actually—had taken a couple of Libyan militia members prisoner and they think that the attack on the consulate was an effort to try to get these prisoners back. So that’s still being vetted.”
The CIA Sunday denied her claim that prisoners were held at the annex, which has not been reported elsewhere.
As her answer continued, Broadwell seemed to speak on behalf of Petraeus: “The challenging thing for General Petraeus is that in his new position he is not allowed to communicate with the press. So he’s known all of this, they had correspondence with the CIA station chief in Libya. Within 24 hours they kind of knew what was happening.”
Broadwell, herself a former military intelligence officer, began her discussion of the attack by referencing an exclusive Fox News report that had run that day. But while dramatic details of that story were later fiercely disputed by government officials, she relayed only parts of that story—like the attempt to send backup from a special-operations force—that were finally confirmed.
Later she lamented that the coverage of Benghazi had compromised U.S. efforts. “As a former intel officer,” she said. “It’s frustrating to me because it reveals our sources and methods. I don’t think the public needs to know all of that.”
I had dismissed a connection between Benghazi and the Patreus resignation but this might be something.

The video seems accurate and backs up the reporting. Of course there's no way to know if she's telling the truth or if she had some inside knowledge but given recent events that is a possibility.

Maybe it can come out of the "delivery fee" they tack on... I stopped ordering in PJ's anymore because it was costing me damned near $40 for two large pizzas. Instead I go to a local place which makes it by hand, New York style, and I happily pay those small-busines Job Creators to feed me.

It does kind of flip the story in an unexpected direction. Given the recent developments I wouldn't totally dismiss her story. Let's suppose it's true just as thought experiment; The CIA takes some prisoners and passes them along to Libyans (rendition), CIA blacksites or just interrogates them and sets them free. There's certainly an operation reason for keeping this quiet since unlike the Bush regime this kind of thing is now actually secret. But it also opens a new political reason since Obama isn't supposed to be doing this sort of thing. Not that it bothers me much but the moonbats might not like it if the story ends up being true.
