Reminds me of the joke (which I actually told to Phil Lesh once when I met him) about the guy who gets lost at sea and winds up on a deserted island. After a few days, he hears drums...boomba-da-boomba-daboomba. The island isn't deserted after all! He walks across the island to discover cannibals playing the drums and cooking up missionaries in a pot.

So he decides to stay on his side of the island and survive as best he can, but the drums never stop...day in, day out, and throughout the night, rain or shine...boomba-da-boomba-daboomba.

Weeks go by...boomba-da-boomba-daboomba.

Finally, he can't stand it any more and again crosses the island, getting ever closer to the boomba-da-boomba-daboomba. When he gets to the village, he just loses his shit and runs up to the chief and says, "I don't care if you eat me alive! Just stop that incessant drumming!"

The chief says, "NO! If drums stop, bass solo!"

Paul Ryan blames loss on surge in 'urban areas.' Is that right?

Ryan was taking some heat in the blogosphere Tuesday for the “urban areas” part of the above comment. Some saw it as a coded reference to “blacks.” We won’t bother to quote this discussion – if you want to see it, just search “Paul Ryan” in Twitter and read the vitriol that appears.

But we’re surprised that Ryan says he was surprised by the urban turnout. After all, most of the battleground states ended up voting pretty much as the average of pre-election polls indicated they would. That’s how New York Times polling analyst Nate Silver ended up calling the results in all 50 states. With predictions that were pretty darn public at the time.

Earlier this year, judges at the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Qatada could not be extradited to Jordan because Jordanian authorities had not provided assurances that torture-derived evidence would not be used to convict him. Torture is routinely used to interrogate prisoners in Jordan, according to Human Rights Watch. In response, Britain and Jordan signed an agreement on Qatada's extradition that stipulated he would not be subjected to torture or other mistreatment at the hands of Jordanian officials.
But on Monday, Britain's Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC) ruled that Jordan had supplied insufficient assurances that the evidence used against Qatada would not be based on testimony from other tortured witnesses. Despite the diplomatic agreement's assurances, the SIAC notes that there was a "high probability" that statements from two witnesses would be used against Qatada in Jordan, and there was a "real risk" that the testimony from the two had been procured through torture. As such, Qatada is unlikely to receive a fair trial in Jordan, the SIAC writes, and so his extradition cannot be allowed.

Geithner Says Higher U.S. Income Taxes Unavoidable

I was just reading up on that....
Might an idea from Mitt Romney save US from 'fiscal cliff'?

Any cap on deductions would have to be part of a larger deficit-reduction package. It wouldn’t raise nearly enough money to solve the problem by itself. Mr. Obama’s cap by itself would have generated $164 billion over 10 years, points out Suzy Khimm on The Washington Post’s WonkBlog Tuesday. In contrast, allowing the Bush-era tax reductions to expire for those making more than $250,000 would generate a whopping $1 trillion over the same time period.

It may not be the solution but it could be part of the solution.

Of course Mitt didn't invent the idea but it was an idea he put forward in his campaign. Obama didn't invent healthcare reform and Bush didn't invent the tax cuts he passed. All this stuff comes from advisers and think tanks. I think that goes without saying.

Frankly, that probably had nothing to do with why he lost. The only reason he won in the first place was because it was special election with low turnout. After all, this is Massachusetts where a respected liberal, openly gay, pro-choice republican candidate couldn't beat a Democrat whose, wife was convicted of running an illegal gambling operation which he "knew nothing about" (if you believe that I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.)

Oddly enough he may get another chance early in 2013 if Kerry gets a Cabinet appointment and we have another special election.

The point is others were already mentioning the idea when Mitt jumped on the train. He really can't claim any ownership of it, other than having his marketing people push that the idea was his.

Deductions have always been an item on the table in tax discussions.

And yes, it's a bit spurious to actually credit Obama for "Obamacare", given that his involvement is that he was the guy in office when the Democrats in Congress, after many many years, finally cobbled together some compromise. Indeed, with GWB going along with the expansion of Medicare, "Obamacare" was the logical next step.

A story/editorial that ran a couple of days ago tried to push for yet another deficit/debt commission, this one supervised by a Clinton+Romney duo.

It's all an attempt to re-invent the past, to make Romney as something other than he was, and to make the Republicans as something other than that upon which they ran.

William Saletan at Slate ( a "magazine" whose name I just noticed suspiciously comes from letters in Saletan's name...) tries hard to pigeonhole:

The New Grand Old Party

Progressives like to think they’re the engine of history. They fight for change, and eventually conservatives succumb. But it doesn’t always work out that way. History is littered with liberal ideas—pacifism, high taxation, single parenting by choice—that conservatives challenged and defeated. Progressives may drive history, but conservatives filter it.

So Justice Sotamayor takes a trip to that dastardly waste of .000001% of taxpayer money Sesame Street, says to a muppet “Abby pretending to be a princess is fun, but it is definitely not a career." The justice recommended little girls go to school so they can be a teacher, lawyer, or “even a scientist.”

Sounds pretty reasonable and encouraging, right? Noooo! The Dumbest Man on the Internet, the King of Derp himself Jim "Dim" Hoft has posted maybe (that's saying a lot, I know) the dumbest rant ever, I guess he was so pissed off, he spelled Sotamayor "Sotamayer," and called her "Killjoy." You can see it for yourself, but here are some comments:

1.)

Someday it’ll come out that Sotomayer has gone “elmo” on little kids…

2.)

Or you can be gay and be a princess who marries another princess. You can also grow up and become a liberal princess who tells eveyone else they dont build things, you are mean, rich and racist and dont pay enough so that they can give it away to parasites who didnt earn that

I think every time we Obama comes to town or a business we put up signs that say

YOU DID NOT EARN THAT !

3.)

Sodomy Street… where they want the boys to grow up to be queens.

4.)

otomayor is an evil woman. And she is high-ranking in ACCOUNTABILITY for what she does to others, as she stands before the God of Heaven, our Creator, Almighty God of the House of Abraham, Isaac and Israel.

5.)

Oil - it's the life blood of Americana:

Re-Elected Obama Has No Reason to Block Keystone Pipeline

[...]

It’s true that extracting and refining bitumen from the sticky black sands emits significantly more carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases than does drilling and processing ordinary oil. Yet in the well-to-wheels life cycle of the oil, its emissions are only about 17 percent greater (or even less) - - because most of oil’s emissions come from use. What’s more, oil-sands producers are working to reduce per-barrel emissions, for example by generating electricity as a byproduct of oil extraction.

[...]

The environmental side effects are real, in other words, but acceptable -- with careful monitoring and continued efforts to minimize them. Consider that Canada is the U.S.’s biggest and most reliable seller of crude, and that the Athabascan oil sands are the third largest proven oil reserves on Earth, already producing about 2 million barrels a day and expected to supply 3.3 million by 2020. That’s enough to help make North America largely energy-independent.

[...]

The "side effects" are real but acceptable!

And I expect they always will be seen as that.

Coal, we luv us some coal:

Where Is All the Coal?

[...] And the United States is naturally well-endowed with coal resources—25 percent of the world’s coal reserves are within our borders [...]

True, but only because of the definition of "reserves". Probable large deposits of carbon material lay in Canada, Russia, off the coast of Norway, and elsewhere, but because they are not yet proven in size and cost to develop they are not called "reserves".

I went back to read some more comments, and here's a chestnut that made me smile:

Your website gets funnier and funnier every single day I read it and I’m so glad I keep coming back. I love how outraged you are that Sotomayor is telling girls that they can be whatever they want and that they can have careers. Why is it so wrong to tell young girls that, one day, they can become scientists? I get how you all don’t like scientists because you have a problem with, you know, facts, but a scientist can be a very fruitful career. I’m not saying that the US oppresses women, or that women have it particularly bad compared to the rest of the world, but as a feminist, I believe that, in most fields, women are just as capable as men and should be told that from a young age. Do you know what I tell them? “good for you, you’re so smart, I bet your children will be the smartest their age.” But I also tell them that because they are so smart, they can also use their gifts to pursue careers IF THEY WANT TO. Deval Patrick - Democrat. The danger is that whoever replaces Kerry would have to run in an off year election next November, quite possibly against Scott Brown.

Actually massachusetts law says the special election has to be no more than 160 days after a seat is vacated. So if the seat is vacated early in 2013 the election would be sometime in the summer.

Not to be too much of a doomer today... but... yes, we're in trouble:

Plants and soils could exacerbate climate change as global climate warms

[...]

Results indicated that the potential range of outcomes is vast and includes the possibility that plant and soil responses to human-caused warming could trigger a large additional release of carbon. If that outcome is realized, a given level of human emissions could result in much larger climate changes than scientists currently anticipate. It would also mean that greater reductions in greenhouse gas emissions could be required to ensure carbon dioxide concentrations remain at what might be considered safe levels for the climate system.

[...]

The scientific paper:

Carbon Cycle Uncertainty Increases Climate Change Risks and Mitigation Challenges

Projections of greenhouse gas concentrations over the twenty-first century generally rely on two optimistic, but questionable, assumptions about the carbon cycle: 1) that elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations will enhance terrestrial carbon storage and 2) that plant migration will be fast relative to climate changes. This paper demonstrates that carbon cycle uncertainty is considerably larger than currently recognized and that plausible carbon cycle responses could strongly amplify climate warming. This has important implications for societal decisions that relate to climate change risk management because it implies that a given level of human emissions could result in much larger climate changes than we now realize or that stabilizing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations at a “safe” level could require lower human emissions than currently understood. These results also suggest that terrestrial carbon cycle responses could be sufficiently strong to account for the changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide that occurred during transitions between ice age and interglacial periods.

[...]

Increasingly, results from coupled climate–carbon cycle models suggest natural carbon sinks will weaken over the next century (Denman et al. 2007; Friedlingstein et al. 2006). Nevertheless, our results suggest that these previous studies underestimate the potential for terrestrial carbon losses because they do not fully account for plausible constraints on plant migration and CO2 fertilization.

A more comprehensive accounting of carbon cycle response uncertainty suggests that the natural carbon cycle could become a major source of (or sink for) carbon emissions over the next century. This has important implications for societal decisions that relate to climate change risk management because it implies that a given level of human emissions could result in much larger climate changes than we now realize or that stabilizing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations at a specific level could require lower human emissions than currently understood.

I note furthermore that the authors did not take into account the continued and expected continuation of deforestation. As fossil fuels become more expensive (as we're extracting the cheapest stuff first) deforestation I expect to accelerate, this already on top of the deforestation happening currently in tropical and subtropical areas being undertaken to expand croplands.

CU-NOAA study shows summer climate change, mostly warming

[...]

In particular the scientists were able to look at the earlier time periods, note the temperature extremes, and observe that those values became more frequent in the later time periods. "You see how the extreme events of the past have become a normal event," Mahlstein said.

The scientists used 90 years of data for their study, a little more than the average lifespan of a human being. So if inhabitants of those areas believe that summers have changed since they were younger, they can be confident it is not a figment of their imagination.

"We can actually say that these changes have happened in the lifetime of a person," Mahlstein said.

But remember, the environmental costs are "acceptable".

Woman 'denied a termination' dies in hospital

Two investigations are under way into the death of a woman who was 17 weeks pregnant, at University Hospital Galway last month.

Savita Halappanavar (31), a dentist, presented with back pain at the hospital on October 21st, was found to be miscarrying, and died of septicaemia a week later.

Her husband, Praveen Halappanavar (34), an engineer at Boston Scientific in Galway, says she asked several times over a three-day period that the pregnancy be terminated. He says that, having been told she was miscarrying, and after one day in severe pain, Ms Halappanavar asked for a medical termination.

This was refused, he says, because the foetal heartbeat was still present and they were told, “this is a Catholic country”.

She spent a further 2½ days “in agony” until the foetal heartbeat stopped....

It was clear to me that he wasn't used to being asked such questions by journalists and the brutal truth was, I came away from the lunch thinking this dude is improvizing like hell and it seems to be working, when nothing did before. So give him his due, but spare me the hagiography.

But more than that, I got a good glimpse of what this man's skill really was: watching the open jaws and worshipping eyes of the hacks around the table, I could see this man was a superb Washington operator - like Colin Powell without any military victories. To spin the rush to exits in Iraq as a masterful American-led strategy - rather than a mixture of luck, courage, sectarian exhaustion and the Anbar switcheroo - was his greatest achievement. That is not necessarily a criticism of course. Good generals need political support, and need to stroke the press and Congress. But there was something about the journalistic swoon that unnerved me. The acceptance of all his bullshit about the genius of the "surge" - when it quite clearly succeeded in getting us out of there but plainly failed to bring about the national reconciliation it promised - also got under my skin.

Poll: If government careens off fiscal cliff, GOP to shoulder blame

If the U.S. government ends up careening off the "fiscal cliff," Republicans in Congress stand to shoulder most of the blame, according to a new poll released Tuesday.

A majority of Americans said in a new, post-election poll that they do not expect President Barack Obama and members of Congress to reach an agreement to avoid the effects of the fiscal cliff, the combination of automatic spending cuts and tax hikes set to take effect at the beginning of the year.

If you're going to develop weapons systems don't complain when other countries "want one too" or even copy your design.

The world did that in a way. It's called nuclear non proliferation. Fail at that and millions may pay. One of our worst diplomatic failures (shared by several admins-Not going wingnut on you here) is the existence of North Korean nuclear warhead designs, perhaps a few warheads that could really ruin South Koreas day.

What I advocate is you call them out and take it as a powerfully demonstrated lesson to keep an eye on design/data security. Visible proof of hostile spying. So, maybe recognize the threat and as you suggested, deal with it. Tighten up security. Jail leakers. I'm not calling for escalation. I'm calling for better prevention moving on.

I am of the feeling that they are fucked. It's just the optics now.

Well, looking at the recent elections, Democrats won big in 06' and 08', voters were dissatisfied and Repubs won huge in '10, Dems won big in '12 (maybe not overall, but with a less-than-stellar economy, I'd say so).

And...I have no idea what that means, but it looks like a lose-lose for them in the House right now. If they work with Obama and things get better, they could win re-election against a Democratic challenger. However, if they stonewall and things get worse, they'll lose. If they do compromise, they'll most likely get primaried by some lunatic, and the lunatic will probably lose IF the Dems can GOTV for a non-Presidential year.

But it does look like people outside of the lunatic fringe are realizing that 2010 was an enormous mistake. If the Democrats can survive the next 2 years and retake the House and hopefully a few more Senate seats, it'll be 2 years where Obama can hopefully push another large bill through (hopefully something that will make big infrastructure investments, because I think that should be the top priority right now. That=jobs too, and would set us up well for 2016.)

Peacefully grant the city of Austin Texas to withdraw from the state of Texas & remain part of the United States.

Austin Texas continues to suffer difficulties stemming from the lack of civil, religious, and political freedoms imposed upon the city by less liberally minded Texans. It is entirely feasible for Austin to operate as its own state, within the United States, in the event that Texas is successful in the current bid to secede. It is important for Austin to remain in the union as to do so would protect it's citizens' standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers.

We would also like to annex Dublin Texas, Lockhart Texas, & Shiner Texas.

I love how they included sodas (Dublin), BBQ (Lockhart), and beer (Shiner) as part of Austin. Heh.

Gallup is very upset at Nate Silver

Did Gallup just blame Nate Silver for ruining the art and science of polling?

You don’t have to read too far between the lines of a statement from Gallup’s editor in chief, Frank Newport, published on Friday, to get that impression.

Newport first attempts the formidable task of defending Gallup’s polling accuracy during the 2012 campaign. Perhaps he was anticipating Silver’s Saturday column, which labeled Gallup the most inaccurate pollster of all the firms that measured voter sentiment this year. But Silver was hardly alone in wondering why Gallup regularly reported numbers much more favorable to Romney than anyone else in 2012. We deserve an explanation a little less lame than Newport’s: what’s the big fuss? Gallup wasn’t really off by that much.

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted's last-minute order shifting the burden from the poll worker to a voter for marking what type of identification was used by a voter casting a provisional ballot violated a prior court order, Ohio law and the U.S. Constitution, a federal judge found Tuesday.

U.S. District Court Judge Algenon Marbley's opinion will not be the last word, however, as Husted, a Republican, plans to appeal the ruling to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

"Secretary Husted will appeal today’s ruling because it allows potentially fraudulent votes to be counted," Matthew McClellan, a spokesman for Husted, told BuzzFeed on Tuesday evening. "By eliminating the ID requirement on provisional ballots, the ruling is contrary to Ohio law and undermines the integrity of the election."

Oh joy. The Texas GOP are getting ready to waste everyone's time and money:

Perry, Dewhurst advocate drug tests for welfare

Gov. Rick Perry and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst made a rare joint appearance on Tuesday to advocate drug tests for Texas residents seeking welfare or unemployment benefits.

A bill filed before the Texas Legislature reconvenes in January would mandate drug-testing for "high-risk" welfare applicants while banning them from using public funds to buy alcohol, tobacco and lottery tickets. But Perry and Dewhurst, who controls the flow of legislation through the state Senate, said a top priority should be expanding such rules to include Texans applying for unemployment assistance too.

"This will prevent tax dollars going into the pockets of drug-users and drug dealers," Perry told a news conference at Austin Glass and Mirror, a small business that says it successfully drug-tests its employees.

Dewhurst said that under the current proposal, anyone failing drug tests would be barred from participating in welfare programs for one year -- unless they enter a drug rehabilitation program paid for Medicaid, the government health care program for the poor.

The USA is so worried about China "taking away" our technology? Let's see, we're sending our manufacturing overseas to China which means they're getting first hand knowledge of a vast swath of our technology. This includes making parts for Boeing.

Oh joy. The Texas GOP are getting ready to waste everyone's time and money:

Perry, Dewhurst advocate drug tests for welfare

re: #232 dragonath

This was a David Duke idea.

And already implemented in Florida by Rick Scott and his statehouse buddies (at least for welfare recipients).

A program that costs the state much more in testing and administrative costs than it saves; programs like this isn't about saving taxpayer money, it's about asserting the control and power of the state over people who can least fight it.

Another reason I'm not receptive to modern conservative arguments. We'll get someone (not the first) complaining about having to pay credit on their tax-advantaged HSA, while an actual proposal that involves real bodily privacy goes unmentioned.

It's not so much control so much as humiliation. "Oh, you lost your job and need our help? Okay, pee in this cup first. Sorry, but we gotta be sure our money's going to the 'right' people, so just pee in the cup and we can get you that check." They figure that the cost of testing will somehow be made back in the number of people who choose not to jump through hoops for temporary assistance.

It's a poll tax on public assistance. The goal here is to get people off public assistance by shame, not to actually assist them.

In the fever dreams of the GOP base, welfare is only for blacks, and so humiliating the recipients is pure racist gold.

It doesn't matter that many white people are on welfare, or that this kind of testing is a waste of money.

The SPLC:

In unusually high turnout for a special election, Duke won 33% of the vote to his opponent John Treen's 19%. In the runoff that followed, Duke beat Treen by just 227 votes. Among the legislation unsuccessfully proposed by Duke while in office were bills to raise penalties for drug offenders in housing projects and to require drug testing for recipients of welfare and Medicaid.

In 1990, Duke announced his candidacy in the Republican primary for a U.S. Senate seat. In the end, he raised an astonishing $2.4 million and won 607,391 votes (about 60% of the white Republican vote), but lost the primary.

This is not only a Florida thing anymore. Missouri has a similar program for "suspected" illegal drug users.

If you listen to a wingnut long enough, particularly the boomer wingnuts who grew up in the 50s and 60s, you quickly realize that their view is that there's not enough "shame" anymore. They'll tell you people used to ashamed of needing welfare, ashamed of seeking an abortion, ashamed of being seen as divorced, ashamed of a woman out-earning her husband, and so forth. And they want to go back to those days, because they can't see that bygone era through anything but nostalgia.

1.)

2.)

3.)

4.)

5.)

Dim, you're a fucking loser.

Sotamayer? Yeah, a lot of the wingnuts were upset about being made to pronounce her name. The best anglicization I could come up with was "Sodameyer". I think Jake and Conrad Sodameyer run a garage outside Lake Wobegon.

To decode: they want to return to an era where oppressive social norms were prevalent, and enforcement included acts of terror perpetrated by an intolerant majority.

Their CEO made some noise about an Obama re-election being a disaster of some sort... Not quite 1000-years-of-darkness but the guy is definitely a Mittens fan. He doesn't need my money. Vasque boots (one of Red Wing's brands) tend to be made overseas, but build quality is still fairly decent.
