Did God Troll Pat Robertson?

U mad bro?
Wingnuts • Views: 33,136

Back in January we had a post about Pat Robertson’s announcement that God had revealed to him who the next President of the US would be, broadly hinting around that The Man Upstairs was definitely not fond of Barack Obama. Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network went on to confidently predict a Romney landslide in the 2012 election.

Oops.

Today Robertson excused his absurdly wrong predictions by saying he missed God’s message, even though it sure seemed at the time like he was hearing the voice of the Almighty.

He doesn’t seem to have considered the possibility that God was just messing with him. Because He could.

Well, he's right...sort of. The NEXT president won't be Barack Obama. But that won't happen until 2016, so I rate that as "mostly true"...

God talks to us individually. There are only a blessed few through whom God talks to others, and it is the height of hubris and self-aggrandizement to think yourself one.

I saw The Avengers on the plane home from Mexico last night...fun film. My favorite part was where Hulk and Thor defeat a space centipede and then Hulk cold-cocks Thor just for the fuck of it. Gave me more respect for Hulk...that and Dr. Banner's comment, "Don't you know my secret? I'm always angry."

Probably some prankster. Reminds me of that one Funny or Die skit with all the celebrities and Kevin Spacey trolls them by pretending to be Bill Clinton. And then the real Bill comes in where Kevin is and tells him "What did I tell you about making prank phone calls, Kevin" "Not to make them." "Not to make them without me."

These televangelical folks are just like neocon pundits--there's no such thing as accountability. They can be as wrong as you can be about Obama's America 2012 and then go ahead and "predict" the exact same crap for Obama's America 2016. And their fanbase, who they keep hitting up for more dough, will continue to send the checks, or rather, continue making their credit card donations. And they'll continue in debt and it will all be PBO's fault.

NY Times is reporting that "at least 5 missiles" have been launched since the cease-fire.

Even in the minutes leading up to the effective start time, the antagonists were firing at each other, and the Israeli authorities reported at least five Palestinian rockets were lobbed into southern Israel shortly after the cease-fire had begun. But no damage or injuries were reported and the rocket fire seemed to end in the second hour. In Gaza, thousands of residents came outside to celebrate.

Good old Palestinian cease fire. Even during peaceful periods they average between 1-3 missile or mortar attacks per day. Nobody really expects them to actually stop the attacks, just slow down to normal. Israelis are the only ones who have to actually abide by the literal cease fire thing.

Most retail don't get a choice. Sometimes it's up to the scheduling manager. My last job, we had to choose 2 of the three holiday's and eve's, xmas, thanksgiving and new years. Working retail suck for the holidays. At least she's getting overtime pay. Many people don't even get that.

I looked for the greeter guy that I always chat with whenever I go into that store. He wasn't there. I sure as hell hope he got the fucking DAY OFF and wasn't, um, terminated.

It reaches people who get most of their information on social media, which is a good number of young people. It also gets Israel's story better distributed so that Hamas' lies don't get wider circulation than the truth, so far as can be helped.

You got to remember that people these days are often in information bubbles of their own design. Israel is just figuring out hoe to get into those bubbles.

Pat Robertson doesn't have a frigging clue. If the anecdotal evidence I've been hearing locally is any indication of how minorities are feeling nationally, the GOP needs to wake up and smell the café con leche in a serious way and be very sincere in anything they say.

Pre-election trip to medical office: This was a mixed group of black & hispanic people, both patients & employees of the place. None of them struck me as particularly high-info voters, but the GOP's racist dog whistling was not lost on a single one of them. To a man/woman they all intended to vote and vote Dem because of it. True NJ is a blue state, I'm just saying that if low-info voters are paying attention here, they're probably doing so elsewhere as well.

Doctor's office today: This was a group of elderly black ladies chatting behind me. I've lived in poor black neighborhoods twice since moving to the East Coast and I feel comfortable betting that they are very much like the elderly black women who lived in my neighborhoods—they worked hard all of their lives at low-paying jobs (often more than one at a time) to make ends meet, they often have to take care of their grandkids (and even extend their caring to the grandkids' friends), and they are devout Christians who dress in their Sunday finest and go to church every weekend. These women are not "progressives" or even especially liberal. They are old school and they are serious.

Again, the racist dog whistling was not lost of them. They were also very much disturbed by the hatefulness of the GOP (they mentioned it several times) and the characterization of the middle class & working poor as lazy freeloaders looking for a handout. Romney's 47% comments seriously pissed them off. They voted Dem and will continue to do so unless & until the GOP changes its ways.

Taxi ride today: My regular taxi driver is a naturalized citizen originally from El Salvador. She's an older woman and pretty conservative—she is a staunch Catholic who grew up in a small town where they had no running water (they took their baths & washed their clothes in the river), they had only intermittent electricity and no TV until she was older, and when it was time for dinner you went out and grabbed one of your chickens to kill & eat it.

The crap she's been hearing from the GOP about immigration—not to mention their characterization of immigrants as criminals and/or disease-ridden trash who just want to pop out "anchor babies" and leech off the system—and from people like Joe Arpaio seriously chapped her hide. Again, this is not a high-info voter—in fact, I only knew she was talking about Arpaio because she mentioned "the sheriff in AZ who makes criminals wear pink underwear", heh.

Anyway, she might not have been aware of all the names & party platforms, but she damned sure knew which party was anti-immigrant. She was very proud of her fellow hispanics for voting 70% for President Obama. She said that while they may have been lazy about going to vote in the past, that is OVER now thanks to the GOP. They are engaged and they are pissed.

I see the IDiots are really pushing this story:

Obama once gave Rubio-like answer on Earth’s age

As the original story points out:

[...]

The truth is that scientific methods have shown, with a one percent degree of uncertainty, that the Earth is 4.54 billion years old, and that its environment formed over billions of years, not six days. As we said before, we suspect that Rubio trusts science on this question. Obama surely does as well. And yet neither of them can bring themselves to say it clearly or definitively.

Why they don't is hardly a "great mystery," as Rubio might put it. Somewhere around 30 percent of Americans believe the Bible should be taken literally, word for word. When you're running for the White House, or planning to, there's no point in alienating that many people on such a personal issue. Neither Rubio nor Obama are science-denying religious zealots. They are politicians.

Sadly, here in the US, the creationist if they are not the majority block will be considered a "swing" block and thus must always be offered a bone by any politician running nationally, or in certain regions of the country.

I really don't want to make a federal case out of this. It annoys me to see pinheads (not I'm not talking about you... this time) complain quite loudly about the War on Christmas when at the same time Thanksgiving is disappearing for a large segment of the population. I also.. But during all the Holidays globally all of us go on the on call list. We try to help out various IT support functions. All the overflow goes to us. It can get really crazy. The phone may ring with a router issue somewhere in China at 3am. Or a password that doesn't work in Oracle.
I make coffee and get out my list of folks I know to call to fix it.. End up doing all the paperwork on line at 5am and planning breakfast.

QFT

I think with a lot of immigrants the lethargy where voting is concerned might be due to the corruption in the process in many countries, i.e they figured, "Why bother? It's not going to make a difference." Seeing that it can indeed make a difference was an epiphany of sorts.
