Egyptian President Morsi Makes Himself a Pharaoh

Places himself above judicial oversight
Middle East • Views: 28,561

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi took a very disturbing step today, essentially turning the government into an autocracy: Egypt’s Morsi Grants Himself Far-Reaching Powers.

Liberal and Christian members withdrew from the assembly during the past week to protest what they say is the hijacking of the process by Morsi’s allies, who they saw are trying to push through a document that will have an Islamist slant marginalizing women and minority Christians and infringing on personal liberties. Several courts have been looking into cases demanding the dissolution of the panel.

The Egyptian leader also decreed that all decisions he has made since taking office in June and until a new constitution is adopted and a new parliament is elected — which is not expected before next spring — are not subject to appeal in court or by any other authority. He also barred any court from dissolving the Islamist-led upper house of parliament, a largely toothless body that has also faced court cases.

The moves effectively remove any oversight on Morsi, the longtime Muslim Brotherhood figure who became Egypt’s first freely elected president last summer after the Feb. 11, 2011 fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak. They come as Morsi is riding high on lavish praise from President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for mediating an end to eight days of fighting between Israel and Gaza’s Hamas rulers.

Per my comment in a previous thread, something like this was the most likely outcome. It wasn't inevitable and it still just possibly might not be inevitable, but it was and remains probable.

When a President refuses to acknowledge such, be his name George Bush or Barack Obama, this country is sowing trouble for itself and its allies.

I don't think we could do anything about it. Morsi may have set himself up as the new "needed" ally to maintain the satus quo in the region. The constitution is probably going to be Sharia based, possibly requiring clerical approval of laws passed and candidates allowed to run for election. He might take power for himself or establish a theocracy and step down. We'll have to wait and see.

The sad thing is that the people of Egypt will be OK with this. In the U.S., it would be impossible for a president to decree himself that kind of power. Men in white coats would come and take him to a padded place, and that would be that.

The Military's chief of staff and the heads of the armed forces are all men chosen by Morsi. He forced out the previous chief over the summer. Much the leadership of the Egyptian army is Muslim Brotherhood aligned. Morsi is also not carefully threatening the perks and businesses the military is into. Based on that, I think a coup unlikely.

Well I guess "meet the new boss, same as the old boss".

This is a shame, but I think that anyone that gloats over this and claims that its a complete refutation of the Arab Spring, and claims that the United States would be better off with the Mubarak dictatorship still in place is a scumbag of the highest order. And will occupy a very special place in hell indeed.

Freeper madness update!

Police officer quits after comments about Obama

The freepers are weighing in on the case of a Florida police officer who resigned after he admitted that he had told colleagues he would volunteer to assassinate President Obama.

Some reactions castigate the officer but only for being so overt about his intentions:

I know plenty of folks who feel the same as this police officer, none of them are dumb enough to admit it beyond a very small, very trusted gruop of friends.

Others bring in the Magical Balance Fairy:

Had the cop been visiting violence vicariously upon Romney, the Union and leftist politicians would have jumped to the cops defense and gotten a slap on the wrist

Others oppose the second amendment solution on purely pragmatic grounds:

G_d forbid that ever happens.

If it did, the Dems and MSM would make Camelot and the Kennedy aura look like small potatoes. They would rename everything they could. They would place his face solely on Mt. Rushmore -- after removing the old white guys' faces. The lauding and praising and glorifying would be sickening.

President Biden for the next 4 years? No thanks!

Some are more directly supportive, and one such comment has already been removed by the mods.

Agreed. As painful as it might be we have to let the Arab spring play out. The whole "freedom" concept is alien in the Muslim world and Islamists have a lot of popular appeal in many countries. Like Iran, a lot of places are going to have to go through this phase as a growing process. Islamist governments and the best case against Islamist governments.

2. Given how the US has been misgoverned from the Clinton impeachment forward, I am highly skeptical about interfering, covertly or overtly, because it would likely backfire.

Without backing away from the above: I add that religious liberty, including the freedom not to be religious, is a basic human right which the US should openly support as a matter of principle and policy.

Maybe works a little better if you make it relevant to the topic at hand:

Megalomaniac
Mohammed Morsi
He'll cause more trouble
Than Jerome Corsi.
Derpa Shave.

Dim Jim

He'll rant and rave,
but make the dough,

The "nuke Europe!" guy? Savage was worse, IMO. I always had the feeling that Savage would actually go out and kill somebody.

I think so. He, ChenZhen, and Rodan ultimately teamed up to found the website called "The Blogmocracy", the first of what we call the Stalker Blogs. They retain their hate of LGF, Charles, and every one of us.

His nic was MikeySDCA (The last four letters standing for San Diego, California). He is the only person banned from here whom the Stalkers actually thought deserved to banned. Even for haters, he was beyond the pale.

re: #105 Bubblehead II

Rodan did indeed start up the Stalker Blog solely devoted to attacking LGF, the "Diary of Daedalus" (which I normally call the "Diary of Dorkus"). He says did that because he wanted to focus the Blogmocracy onto a broader range of issues, and to put most of the LGF-Hate into one place. The Blogmocrasy is still an extreme place that often sees a good deal of hate spewed.

113 Tigger2005  Fri, Nov 23, 2012 6:53:41am

Hate to say it but this is almost a legitimate "told you so" point for Obama's detractors, even if there was no way any President, Republican or Democrat, could have prevented it short of backing Mubarak to the hilt (and he probably would have fallen anyway). I say "almost" because it really isn't an "I told you so" moment, but it's closer to being one than any of the other ridiculous "I told you so" points Obama's critics come up with.

However, it's important to keep in mind that Corsi's hold on power is not as firm as Mubarak's was for a long time. He doesn't have these powers just because he says so. The people could rise up again, the Army could topple him.

 Frank says:

Interviewer:
The notion of a "guitar solo" has preconceptions based on it; people automatically refute it because it's supposed to be self-indulgent or "for musicians." It's almost like things become iconographic and somehow lose their value for outsiders.

Zappa:
Well, whose fault is that? That's what writers do. Musicians don't do that. The average person doesn't sit around thinking about the "iconographic problems of a guitar solo." -- Interview for Musician magazine, by Matt Resnicoff, November 1991. Reprinted in July 1995 Issue.
