“Obama’s Godless Thanksgiving” Fake Outrage Meme Spreads Rapidly Through Wingnut Media

Wingnuts • Views: 37,084

Sure enough, Breitbrat Ben Shapiro’s moronic attack on President Obama’s Thanksgiving address was rapidly picked up by the rest of the right wing Fake Outrage Machine. The Daily Caller has this article based on Shapiro’s post: Obama Thanksgiving Address: Calls to Unite Behind WH, Doesn’t Thank God.

Watch how the Daily Caller’s Christopher Bedford blatantly slants the story against President Obama, saying he “urged the country to unite behind his administration” twice, even though the actual quote from Obama’s speech says no such thing.

During his fourth Thanksgiving presidential address, President Barack Obama referenced the recent, long and bruising campaign season, urged the country to unite behind his administration and, for the fourth year running, neglected to offer verbal thanks to God.

“As a nation, we’ve just emerged from a campaign season that was passionate, noisy, and vital to our democracy,” Obama said. “But it also required us to make choices - and sometimes those choices led us to focus on what sets us apart instead of what ties us together; on what candidate we support instead of what country we belong to.”

“Thanksgiving,” he continued, “is a chance to put it all in perspective - to remember that, despite our differences, we are, and always will be, Americans first and foremost.”

The president’s call to unite behind his administration follows a bitter election, in which his opponent, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, won independents 50 to 45 percent, and whites 59 to 39 percent.

Notice that when it’s filtered through the Fake Outrage Machine, “we will always be Americans first and foremost” mutates into “you must unite behind my administration.”

And a bit further into the piece, another bizarre take on the President’s words:

The president’s mention of the freedom ‘to worship as we please’ could be seen as a challenge to conservatives and the Catholic Church, both of which have accused his administration of waging a war on religious freedom.

Here I was thinking that the freedom to worship as we please is a core American value, to be celebrated on Thanksgiving. What could possibly be wrong with that?

But at the Daily Caller, it’s a “challenge to conservatives and Catholics,” who are presumably opposed to the idea of worshipping as we please. Or something.

This turkey of a fake outrage also pops up at Knuckle Draggers Central, Fox Nation, with the charming headline: Obama’s God-Less Thanksgiving.

The comments are as stupid and vile as you might expect, of course. Just one example; I stopped reading after this one:

the Obama’s are still one seriously fügly family. Michelle looks like the diseased result of büttséx between a silverback and a warthog. Barf.

I was pretty sure that the "worship as you please" ideal was the one enshrined in the First Amendment of our Constitution, you know, the amendment they hide behind whenever their asses get taken behind the woodshed for spouting BS.

Oh look! Reagan in 1982. Only mentioned God once.

Proclamation 4979 -- Thanksgiving Day, 1982
September 27, 1982
By the President of the United States of America

A Proclamation

Two hundred years ago, the Congress of the United States issued a Thanksgiving Proclamation stating that it was ``the indispensable duty of all nations'' to offer both praise and supplication to God. Above all other nations of the world, America has been especially blessed and should give special thanks. We have bountiful harvests, abundant freedoms, and a strong, compassionate people.

I have always believed that this annointed land was set apart in an uncommon way, that a divine plan placed this great continent here between the oceans to be found by people from every corner of the Earth who had a special love of faith and freedom. Our pioneers asked that He would work His will in our daily lives so America would be a land of morality, fairness, and freedom.

Today we have more to be thankful for than our pilgrim mothers and fathers who huddled on the edge of the New World that first Thanksgiving Day could ever dream. We should be grateful not only for our blessings, but for the courage and strength of our ancestors which enable us to enjoy the lives we do today.

Let us reaffirm through prayers and actions our thankfulness for America's bounty and heritage.

Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim Thursday, November 25, 1982, as a National Day of Thanksgiving and I call upon all of our citizens to set aside that day for appropriate expressions of thanksgiving.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of Sept. in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-two, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and seventh.

Ronald Reagan

I don't know how, but your post reminded me of a terribly tangential joke I heard some time ago.

A priest and one of his parishioners were out on the golf course. The parishioner teed off, and his ball sliced away into the deep woods. "F---, I missed!" yelled the man, storming off toward the cart. The priest admonished the younger man, but with every poor shot, another f-bomb burst from his lips. Finally, as they neared the green on the 18th hole, the priest warned the man, "Be careful, lest the Lord strike you down for your sinful ways." At that moment, as the priest raised his club to strike his ball, a bolt from the blue struck him dead. A voice from the heavens boomed out, "F---, I missed."

Christie Puts New Jersey Sandy Damages at $29.4 Billion

Superstorm Sandy, which left 37 dead in New Jersey and ravaged the state’s Atlantic coastline, caused $29.4 billion in damage, according to Governor Chris Christie.

The estimate includes lost property, business revenue and widespread devastation to the state’s mass-transit system, Christie said today in a statement. He said the figure, which includes money already received from the federal government, could be revised higher in coming weeks.

“This preliminary number is based on the best available data, field observations and geographical mapping, and supported by expert advice from my cabinet commissioners and an outside consulting company,” Christie said in the statement. “In a short period of time, we put together a comprehensive and responsible estimate.”

But I'm sure that the free market and private enterprise will fall all over themselves to cover the cost. Really.

BTW, yesterday Krugman jumped on the Rubio-creationism issue, and hits the nail squarely:

Grand Old Planet

[...]

By the way, that question didn’t come out of the blue. As speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, Mr. Rubio provided powerful aid to creationists trying to water down science education. In one interview, he compared the teaching of evolution to Communist indoctrination tactics — although he graciously added that “I’m not equating the evolution people with Fidel Castro.” Gee, thanks.

What was Mr. Rubio’s complaint about science teaching? That it might undermine children’s faith in what their parents told them to believe. And right there you have the modern G.O.P.’s attitude, not just toward biology, but toward everything: If evidence seems to contradict faith, suppress the evidence.

MARFA, Texas (AP) — Investigators are trying to determine who smuggled nearly 500 pounds of marijuana on board a West Texas school bus hauling student athletes.

Border Patrol officials say the duffel bags of marijuana were discovered Monday night in the bus transporting Van Horn basketball players. The students were heading home after games in the border city of Presidio.

The bus stopped at a Marfa convenience store so the students could get snacks. The driver opened a cargo door and saw the bags.

Border Patrol spokesman Bill Brooks said Wednesday that an agent who happened to be at the store confiscated the marijuana. Nobody was arrested.

Drug Enforcement Administration officials did not immediately return a message Wednesday.

Culberson County-Allamoore Independent School District officials could not immediately be reached due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Interesting that they didn't name the agent who 'happened to be at the store'....

But if the universe is indifferent, you don’t have to torture yourself like that because you know that whatever happens, it’s nothing personal. It’s all just business.

Because really, when children need to do is go through life believing that their parents are the unquestionable authority on how the world works. If they grow up thinking of their parents as flawed beings who follow the wisdom of other flawed beings, they might do something bad...like questioning authority and promoting alternative views of the world.

Hamas polices Gaza border after IDF fire kills man

A number of the Palestinians attempted to break through the border fence into Israel. IDF soldiers initially fired shots into the air, but when warnings were not heeded, shots were directed at the suspects' legs, according to the IDF.

One armed Palestinian was apprehended in Israeli territory after having crossed the fence and was returned to Gaza by soldiers, the IDF stated.

Given that the whole purpose of the fence is to keep out terrorists from killing or kidnapping ISraelis it's not a border you can fuck around with. Especially after warning shots.

God rest ye merry, atheists*, let nothing you dismay;
Remember there’s no evidence
There was a Christmas Day;
When Christ was born is just not known,
No matter what they say,
O, Tidings of reason and fact, reason and fact,
Glad tidings of reason and fact.

Our current Christmas customs come
From Persia and from Greece,
From solstice celebrations of the ancient Middle East.
This whole darn Christmas spiel is just
Another pagan feast,
O, Tidings of reason and fact, reason and fact,
Glad tidings of reason and fact.

There was no star of Bethlehem,
There was no angels’ song;
There couldn’t have been wise men
For the trip would take too long.
The stories in the Bible are historically wrong,
O, Tidings of reason and fact, reason and fact,
Glad tidings of reason and fact.

Protesters unhappy with Al Jazeera
Al Jazeera studio in Cairo set on fire in third day of violence

The studio operated by Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr, a station set up to cover domestic affairs after the uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak, was badly damaged by the blaze.

Overlooking Tahrir Square, its windows were smashed and two empty bottles, apparently used for petrol bombs, were found inside the office, Reuters TV footage showed.

"There were 200 to 250 people gathered outside the studio chanting against the channel," Ahmed Dessouki, a producer with the channel, told Reuters television.

The Interior Ministry described the perpetrators as "trouble makers" who had attacked police officers when they had arrived to investigate, the state news agency reported. The public prosecutor has ordered an investigation.

Wait, are you serious? Is every Republican I used to consider sensible going to start spouting off derp like they've got a hose full of it jammed up their backside?

I am serious. On the Sunday funnies this past weekend, he said that the Senate should not consider any nominees until everything comes out about Benghazi. It seems he's chosen Benghazi to be the note he goes out on.

No matter how you look at this BENGHAZI COVER-UP....there is very little that can be done now that MAINSTREAM MEDIA has dragged the OBAMAFIA over the finish-line.

BEFORE ANY GOODS CHANGES WILL COME TO THIS COUNTRY, MAINSTREAM MEDIA MUST ERADICATED THROUGH WHATEVER LEGAL MEANS POSSIBLE.

Hugo Chavez would be proud.

No, wait...

The Des Moines Register published a concern-troll editorial on Benghazigate, warning that Obama should not repeat the cover-up mistakes of Nixon:

Obama must come clean on Benghazi

"...As President Richard Nixon discovered during Watergate, a “two-bit burglary” resulted in the downfall of a president as a result of an elaborate effort to conceal of the facts. That is the lesson the Obama administration should keep in mind as it lays out the complete story of the Benghazi attack."

This doesn't even rise to the level of "two-bit burglary." Unless they're alleging there's some crime behind this "cover-up," then there's nothing there to cover up.

Maddow pretty much hit the head on the nail on Tuesday:

The change in the Benghazi talking points

The partisan hysteria surrounding the September attack in Benghazi has taken a deescalating trajectory -- the scope of the conspiracy theories and unhinged criticism has grown narrower, not broader, over time.

As of yesterday, the overarching question from the right was reduced to this: the talking points made available to U.S. officials four days after the attack were slightly edited, with the word "extremists" replacing the word "terrorists." This, Republicans have argued, is critically important because, well, just because. The "scandal" conservatives are comparing to Watergate has narrowed to a discussion over word choice.

Interesting. The Benghazi police chief who refused to step down went and got himself shot a few days ago
Benghazi police reject new chief

Drissi was gunned down outside his home in the early hours of Wednesday morning by unknown assailants. The motive of the attackers is unknown, but there are suspicions the attack may relate to a decree circulated by the security directorate on Oct. 10 to all police stations in Benghazi authorising officers to use force against outlawed militias still operating in the city.

The decision read as follows: “To the head of departments and national security stations, you are authorised to use force against all outlaws of armed brigades, those who storm your headquarters in order to release detainees, confiscate your weapons, sabotage equipment or damage vehicles. I will take full responsibility for such decisions as an official.”

Benghazi has been the scene of a disturbing spate of killings against senior security officials over the past year, almost all of whom were formally associated with the Gaddafi regime.

And Grover immediately fires a shot across the bow:

"Saxby Chambliss wrote a commitment to the voters of Georgia. He got elected and re-elected making that commitment," Norquist said. "He's never promised me anything."

He said he believes Chambliss was "caught" on a TV station and that "he said some things perhaps that didn't make sense."

If the senator wants to "change his mind and become a tax increaser," Norquist said, "he needs to have that conversation with the people of Georgia."

re: #32 Douchecanoe and Ryan Too

Since I love a good Golf joke, I'm going to repost this classic from a few years back:

The Pope met with the College of Cardinals to discuss a proposal from Shimon Peres, the former leader of Israel. "Your holiness," said one of the Cardinals, "Mr. Peres wants to determine whether Jews or Catholics are superior, by challenging you to a golf match." The Pope was greatly disturbed, as he had never held a golf club in his life.

"Not to worry," said the Cardinal, "we'll call America and talk to Jack Nicklaus. We'll make him a Cardinal, he can play Shimon Peres... We can't lose!" Everyone agreed it was a good idea. The call was made and, of course, Jack was honored and agreed to play.

The day after the match, Nicklaus reported to the Vatican to inform the Pope of his success in the match. "I came in second, your Holiness," said Nicklaus.

"Second?!!" exclaimed the surprised Pope. "You came in second to Shimon Peres?!!"

"No," said Nicklaus, "second to Rabbi Woods."

You know for all the criticisms and conspiracy theories and religious brouhahas around the life of Barack Obama I can't help but respect the guy for being a very dedicated husband, father and family man. That's something our country needs PLENTY more of these days.

I have even more respect for Obama for somehow managing to have a good marriage and keep his kids down to earth in the face of not only the daunting challenges of being President, but also the unreal level of anger directed towards him and his family (unfortunately his wife AND kids have been frequently targeted as well).

"This day is a time to take stock of the fortune we have known and the kindnesses we have shared, grateful for the God-given bounty that enriches our lives."

That sounds like giving thanks to God to me.
