But not everybody’s healthy, and tonight at the reliably crazed breitbart.com, John Nolte’s feverish fantasies are feeding on themselves: BENGHAZI-GATE ENTERS NEW PHASE: THE COVER UP OF THE COVER UP!!!

It's quickly ceasing to be the "biggest thing since Watergate" and slowly metamorphosing into the driving excuse for opposition to Susan Rice when her nomination ends up before the Senate GOP. Thing is, I very much doubt the GOP wants to open a discussion about SecState nominees who have been less than honest with the American people.

4 dragonfire1981  Fri, Nov 23, 2012 5:59:40pm

I suspect it will rear its ugly head when the Secretary of State process gets closer to completion, especially if Rice is the one headed for confirmation.

Also, OT but want to rant: I can't stand that STUPID Kmart commercial with that song that just says "The lights, the lights, the lights, the lights".

Not only does it make NOT want to shop at Kmart, it makes me want to find the nearest one and burn it down.

I think it sticks mightily in their craws that, despite their best efforts, this didn't end up being the "October Surprise" they so badly needed. The big "scandal" that would totally sink Obama because they'd use it to convince the public that only Republicans could protect America from Al-Q and only Romney could make sure that Republicans had the power to do so.

Yahtzee's said a couple times that it's his job as a critic to harp on the things he found wrong with a game, even if he has to dig for them. But if he finds a game he truly did like, then he's been known to give the odd positive review now and then. Most recent one I can think of was XCom.

Oh, and when it comes to anything the media deems racialist or genderific, can we find someone other than old white guys to lay out our case? Why isn’t Condi Rice making the case against Susan Rice? Where’s Susana Martinez? The GOP is flush with women and minorities. Let’s get them prepped for battle and get them out there. We can kill these racist/sexist memes simply by showing up. Optics do matter.

The GOP must stop letting us down like this. We can’t change the media; we can’t make the media do their jobs honestly, and we certainly can’t assume that the media’s ever going to do the right thing.

We can’t lose the Susan Rice debate on the facts. The facts are on our side. The same goes for Libya. But unless and until we’re fully prepared on the facts and willing to then take the debate directly to the media, we’ll keep losing the game, because we drop too many easy pop-ups.

Yes Allah, that's just what you need. To put Condi Rice out front in defense of your "case" against Susan Rice. Because I'm sure the media won't dare ask her about why she should be seen as some authority on the trustworthiness of SecState nominees.

As I recall, during the election season, Fox tried to press Condi Rice into joining the Benghazi frenzy, but she refused to play ball. From late October:

[Link: articles.latimes.com...]

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is refusing to join the criticism of the Obama administration for its response to the attack that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans last month, saying Americans should reserve judgment until official investigations have time to piece together the truth.

...

“We don’t have all the pieces and I think it’s easy to try and jump to conclusions about what might have happened here,” she told Fox’s Greta Van Susteren in an interview Wednesday. “It’s probably better to let the relevant bodies do their work.”

...

A long list of former Republican officials have accused the Obama administration of trying to conceal details of the attacks, including former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who told Fox just before Rice’s appearance that “the coverup is palpable.”

But Rice, who was Clinton’s immediate predecessor as America’s top diplomat, sounded sympathetic to the administration’s argument that diplomats in turbulent regions always face a degree of risk.

“You can’t simply keep your diplomats in a bunker,” she said. “They have to get out and do their work.”

She said the State Department had procedures in place to handle security crises, and that Congress and the State Department panel will examine if the appropriate rules were followed given the known threats in Benghazi. “I have no reason to believe they weren’t followed,” she added.

Somehow I doubt Allahpundit's sour-grapes rant has much chance of enlisting her to his side.

It's how things are done. Teams have the shirts and hats produced in advance and if they don't win the championship the gear gets donated overseas and written off as a charitable donation. At least by donating it people in poor countries get clothes they otherwise might not have been able to afford.

It’s The Racism, Stupid

It’s the racism.

It’s the sexism.

It’s the homophobia.

It’s the fear of the other. It’s bigotry and bias in a dozen forms and whatever label you want to slap on it.

Let’s just stop pretending that it’s anything else.

You know, I’d have more respect for these people, not a lot more respect but perhaps some anyway, if they’d just come right out and say it. Get it out in the light where we can look at it. Instead they pretend to righteous indignation – what? How dare you call me a racist! How dare you call me a sexist! Or a bigot! Or a homophobe. Why, I’m insulted, I’m offended that you would say such a thing. In fact, you’re the bigot because you won’t tolerate my bigotry! Yes, yes, that’s it. Bigot? I know you are, but what am I?

And then we have to listen to their nonsense, their fear and hatred and endless bile, and we’re all supposed to act like we’re so damned stupid that we don’t all really know what we’re talking about here.

And what we’re talking about is the bigotry.

Continues.

Please. It’s racism stupid? You call people stupid but it’s ok to say whites are bigots? I’m not a racist! Racism is voting by COLOR. Whites are the very least racist because whites come from all over the world in America and get married and insimilate. Have you ever heard of the “melting pot?” Irish and ggerman and Italians and Englishmen all came together in Ellis island and shared their culture and left behind their origins. Blacks don’t do that. They didn’t even come from Ellis Island like regular people did. African American? What is that? Latinos? Mexican American, what is that? Why can’t they just call themsevles American? They even want special made up holidays. Quanza? What is that? You con’t see that with Cubans they come to America and are grateful and try to fit in and don’t call themselves “Cuban-American.” They say they are American period. That’s racism stupid. Black people need to start taking responsiblty for themselves until then they shouldn’t be allowed to vote because they elect people based on COLOR like Obama.

I think the sandbox/sim genre is way underrated. Game developers are in love with their own generic plots and story telling. Open world freepay is the future of gaming. Imagine if Bioshock or GTA was an open world sim. I don't mind closed world puzzles if done right. Portal is a great example, just a little originality is all it takes.

Think the big appeal of such sandbox games is that there's pretty much plenty of open room for mods. That's always been a big thing in gaming, but it's becoming more of one as mod development programs become pretty much part of the packaging of any major game these days. Problem is that game developers are becoming increasingly convinced that consoles are where all the actions is these days and PC games are a secondary consideration. I'm having a hard time naming any big-name titles anymore exclusive to the PC.

"Use of a toothbrush and electric shaver is always under supervision. One is therefore under mental pressure to finish quickly as the guards are tapping their feet outside the cell ... This limits brushing to once a day and shaving to once a week in order not to have to go through the mental ordeal more often than necessary," he wrote in the letter.

"Therefore there is the likelihood that Norway's own 'mini Abu Ghraib,' in the cellars of Ila Prison, are being kept a secret and that Norway's human rights ambassadors' work to spread the 'world's most humane principles' are avoiding being embarrassed."

Whiny racist wingnut is very racist and whiny, news at 11:00...

To Separate or Die?

In fairness to many of those whites who voted for the incumbent, I doubt so many would have done so had the media allowed them to know the truth about the most incompetent, dangerous and vindictive president ever to have been elected. Most black voters would still have done so, they voted for his colour, not his record, and Hispanics, easily disproving the naïve claim that they are natural conservatives, voted as they always will for anyone but the white man.

But they didn't. The media long ago gave up reporting truths without an agenda, so they were not told the truth.

Even if the press had told the truth, an act of which they are no longer capable, is doubtful that it would have made much difference, what we see in America today is a vote cast by a constituency which the American left began importing 50 years ago and who will soon make it impossible for a Republican, let alone a white man, to ever again be elected president of the same America which white men once made into the greatest power on Earth.

This, of course was the plan, and if there were any justice left in history, the mouldy corpses of Senator Edward Kennedy, Rep. Emanuel Cellar, Senator Philip Hart and others behind the 1965 Immigrationand Nationality act, which fundamentally changed what it meant to be an American would be dug up and hanged as they should have been at the time. Theirs was a deliberate and traitorous act with genocidal intent, and the deadly fruit of what they planted cast it's votes on November 6th.

Went about as far as I'm ever going to in the Ender's Game saga, same with Hyperion and Honor Harrington. I don't get into the series stuff much--after a while it seems the authors just run out of stuff and are on contract to a publisher and have to write something . . .anything.

Speaker for the Dead was excellent. The audio of the series was excellent as well. Multiple cast with Stefan Rudnicki--if you don't recognize the name, you would definitely recognize the voice. Anything he narrates will be good.

From the article:

Tagging school children with RFID chips is uncommon, but not new. A federally funded preschool in Richmond, California, began embedding RFID chips in students’ clothing in 2010. And an elementary school outside of Sacramento, California, scrubbed a plan in 2005 amid a parental uproar. And a Houston, Texas, school district began using the chips to monitor students on 13 campuses in 2004 for the same reasons the Northside Independent School District implemented the program. Northside is mulling adopting the program for its other 110 schools.

Student Suspended for Refusing to Wear a School-Issued RFID Tracker

Uh, you might want to rethink your support for that girl, given who's in her corner and why she's refusing:

The suspended student, sophomore Andrea Hernandez, was notified by the Northside Independent School District in San Antonio that she won’t be able to continue attending John Jay High School unless she wears the badge around her neck, which she has been refusing to do. The district said the girl, who objects on privacy and religious grounds, beginning Monday would have to attend another high school in the district that does not yet employ the RFID tags.

The Rutherford Institute said it would go to court and try to nullify the district’s decision. The institute said that the district’s stated purpose for the program — to enhance their coffers — is “fundamentally disturbing.”

SNIP

The Hernandez family, which is Christian, told InfoWars that the sophomore is declining to wear the badge because it signifies Satan, or the Mark of the Beast warning in Revelations 13: 16-18.

The district, in a letter last week to the family, said it would allow her to continue attending the magnet school with “the battery and chip removed.” But the girl’s father, Steve Hernandez, said the district told him that the offer came on the condition that he must “agree to stop criticizing the program and publicly support it,” a proposition the father told WND Education that he could not stomach.

Yes folks, that's right: Miss Hernandez and her parents think RFID is the Mark of the Beast and they're supported by Alex Jones. The bolded parts represent links to Infowars and WND which I did not preserve.

There is a very long one called The Snow Queen by Joan Vinge. I love what I've read of Vernor's.

Is C.S. Friedman any good? "Downbelow Station" sounds very familiar, but I can't remember why.

Downbelow Station is C.J. Cherryh. I haven't read or listened to it, but I'm a big fan of some of her other work, in particular the Chanur and Foreigner series. She's one of the best I know of at creating believable alien societies. Unfortunately I can't tell you if the audio versions are any good.

As a parent I am totally torn on the microchipping of kids. It would reduce abductions --if done properly. If inserted somewhere it couldn't be easily removed. And decision must be the parent's or guardian's.

I think it would have to be removed at age 18 or whatever the age of majority is for each state.

As adults we are surrounded by so much GPS technology, I think the Big Brother concept is rather moot. The future is here. Some things are inevitable when you have a large and diverse population and so much technology.

I mean, if the technology was available at the time, would Adam Walsh still be alive?

Great Moments in Not-Racism

Bob Dumas, it seems is the local right-wing shock jock in Raleigh, North Carolina. And coming off the election, he and his show G105 “Showgram” decided it would be a good idea to have a special float at the Saturday’s Raleigh WRAL Christmas Parade.

As described by the News & Observer …

The entry featured a black man dressed in a skirt with fairy wings, strapped to a harness that was suspended from the back of a tow truck. Dumas, riding on the float, described the scene to parade goers as “Tyrone the Black Christmas Fairy” who was going to turn “crackers” into Beyonce.

Steampunk Lecter. Should be a band name.

Seriously though, it bothers me whenever someone roots for the depravity and lawlessness of our prisons. We need to seriously evaluate our attitudes as a society towards our prisons and the people living within them.

ADX isn't lawless, order is well maintained there. Nor is depravity tolerated. But its inmates are kept locked down 23 hours a day. I figure such conditions would be fitting for the murderer Brevik. A man such as he cannot be rehabilitated; That being so, the point of prison in his case should be punishment.

Foster: Which wouldn't make them shenanigans, at all, really.
Mac: [Irish voice] Evil shenanigans!
O'Hagen: I swear to God, I'll pistol whip the next guy that says 'shenanigans!'
Mac: Hey Farva, what's the name of that restaurant you like with all the goofy shit on the walls and the mozzarella sticks?
Farva: You mean Shenanigans's?
Mac, Foster and Thorny: Oh, no! [Laughing, Mac hands O'Hagen his gun.]
Farva: You're talking about Shenanigans's, right?
O'Hagen: Put those away!

Wow this one is ugly even for Conservapedia, what sanity remained is slipping over there since the election...

The Question:

Conservative- Could you please explain to me how arresting/executing homosexuals is any different than what the Nazi's did (arresting/executing Jews for what they perceived was the Jew's harm to society)? Had the Nazis only arrested/executed homosexuals (instead of other groups of people), would have you supported their actions? - GSalmeron

The Answer:

That's very easy. The leftist National Socialist German Workers Party genocide was largely motivated by evolutionary racism. Anti-sodomy laws are based on righteous indignation and meant to protect society from sexual perverts and the disease, pederasty and other moral degeneracy they spread/promote. See: Homosexuality and health and Homosexuality and murders and Homosexuality and pederasty and Homosexuality and Illegal Drug Use and Homosexual circuit parties and disease and Homosexuality and bestiality and Causes of Homosexuality. I hope that clears things up for you. - Conservative

He then goes on to quote Hitler about the strong not "blending" with the weak...again stressing that he was a ""socialist"" and therefore a leftist regardless of any contrary evidence. The rest of that talk page doesn't really get any better, just a lot of disturbing hatred.

i think one of the best recent books is the third reich in power. evans really does the footwork to give you the detail about exactly what they were up to in detail. since he's writing only a few years ago and is very aware of contemporary political bullshit, at one point he covers the issue of socialism in nazi germany, i.e. did the nazis in power actually practice it at all. answer, in detail, uh actually they worked hand in glove with the big capitalists

it's even easier to find out that any actual gay socialist nazis were mostly found in the s.a. which of course the ss massacred early on in the 'night of the long knives", going on to denounce roehm loudly both for his homosexuality as well to a lesser extent for his espousal of actual socialism

In FO:3 if you killed one of the wandering merchants, you could loot all his stuff. In NV, all you can get is the stuff he had equipped. What a ripoff.

In answer to your question: My sister stayed in Pennsylvania and did not come home for Thanksgiving. It's likely to be the same way for Christmas. She came home for a week in September, and that's likely to be it for this year.

My parents and I went to Lawry's on Ontario Street in downtown Chicago (Magnificent Mile area). The turkey and prime rib were very good there.

Protest in front of Egypt high court attacked by unknown assailants

The liberal Constitution Party, the Egyptian Social Democratic Party and the liberal Wafd Party were protesting Morsi's recent constitutional declaration and voicing support to judges who were holding an extraordinary general assembly inside the building to discuss responses to Morsi's decree.

Ahram Online reporters at the scene said the demonstrators were attacked with fireworks, which stirred panic among them as everyone ran aimlessly to escape violence. One protester was bleeding following the attack.

Police has arrived on the scene and are using tear gas canisters to disperse protesters.

An article on something I think about constantly... /

Can You Be Raped by the Devil?

Can demons engage in sexual activity with humans?

As bizarre as it sounds, those who minister to people in occult bondage say it's more common than you think.

For nearly two decades, Contessa Adams felt as though she had no power against the demonic violators of her body. She felt trapped in secrecy and shame and knew that the demons tormenting her wanted things to stay that way.

But God had another agenda for Adams when she found Christ in 1979. The former stripper has a ministry through which she exposes one of Satan's darkest secrets—sexual demons.

These spiritual rapists, as Adams describes them in her book, Consequences, often prey on people by performing sexual acts through nightmares and erotic dreams. Some people become so dependent upon these demonic experiences that they actually look forward to them.

No kidding... I mean, what a bunch of hooey!

John Nolte:

1. The GOP needs to get organized so they’re ready for the media's talking points. What happened this morning on Soledad O'Brien can't keep happening.

2. Once organized, the GOP needs to flood the media with happy warrior Republicans who are prepared to push back and get our message out there.

And they enjoy beating up on strawmen....Ohh the Strawmanity.... (freep)

moral relativism and liberal pretzel logic.

only 50-60 years ago, nuclear family great, kids were a normal outcome of sex, perverts were jailed, animals were pets or on your plate by God’s grace. if you wanted to fool around you paid for your own birth control b/c it was your responsibility for exercising that liberty. and this wasn’t consider just christian thinking, it was inherent common sense for most people across all demographics.

since then the secular experts have abandoned God, and are’going it alone. and the best they come up with is gay parents are better in part b/c no kids, dads aren’t needed anymore, whatever you do if you care about the earth and the rest of us, don’t have kids, and don’t eat animals, but you can screw them. save the planet, abort your baby is their battle cry. and we expect the rest of you to pay for our abortions and contraceptives, we’re morally superior’to you now, don’t you know? we’re saving the planet!

the one thing i’ve prayed for and known I’d have from God saving me , is a sound mind, a mind that can see clearly what is going on around me and know wht’s right from what isn’t. today we’ve fallen so far from just a short time ago, it aparently does take a rocket scientist to know what even secular common sense agreed with God’s word, only 60 years ago.

Brotherhood calls for mass protests Sunday in support of Morsi decree

The statement containing the call to demonstrate defended the president's decree decision, arguing it seeks to finalise the draft constitution. The group further condemned those who oppose the decree, accusing them of trying to "hurdle the drafting of the new constitution and the planned parliamentary elections in an attempt to topple the regime and take over power."

"They (demonstrators against the constitutional declaration) protested using bad language and with the help of thugs destroyed and burned the Freedom and Justice Party (the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood) headquarters while others attacked the police using Molotov cocktails and stones and set fire to public institutions."

The call to support the presidential decree further condemned Friday's anti-Morsi protests as "irresponsible" and "aimed at destroying state institutions," adding that the protests betray a lack of respect for the will of the people.

Oh, crap.

My wife is a private duty nurse. Her client passed away on Thanksgiving day.

Thoughts, positive waves, prayers for him and that we can find new work soon.

Oh wow. Sucks on multiple levels.

Working in CA, a big contractor had huge client ready to start a mega home. Client was early 40's jogger, wife and two kids. Contractor didn't take work for 18 month time period so he could handle the project.

Client's wife found him in his recliner on Xmas eve, newspaper in lap, massive heart attack. She didn't want to do the project after that.

416 Gus  Sat, Nov 24, 2012 9:43:15am

Here. Read it. It's a rather simple cease fire agreement.

Agreement of Understanding For a Ceasefire in the Gaza Strip

1: (no title given for this section)

A. Israel should stop all hostilities in the Gaza Strip land, sea and air including incursions and targeting of individuals.

B. All Palestinian factions shall stop all hostilities from the Gaza Strip against Israel including rocket attacks and all attacks along the border.

C. Opening the crossings and facilitating the movements of people and transfer of goods and refraining from restricting residents' free movements and targeting residents in border areas and procedures of implementation shall be dealt with after 24 hours from the start of the ceasefire.

D. Other matters as may be requested shall be addressed.

2: Implementation mechanisms:

A. Setting up the zero hour for the ceasefire understanding to enter into effect.

B. Egypt shall receive assurances from each party that the party commits to what was agreed upon.

C. Each party shall commit itself not to perform any acts that would breach this understanding. In case of any observations Egypt as the sponsor of this understanding shall be informed to follow up.

Since 2009, 88 Percent Of Income Growth Went To Corporate Profits, Just One Percent Went To Wages
By Guest Blogger on Jun 30, 2011 at 3:15 pm

After the longest recession since WWII, many Americans are still struggling while S&P 500 corporations are sitting on $800 billion in cash and making massive profits. Now, economists from Northeastern University have released a study that finds our sluggish economic recovery has almost solely benefited corporations. According to the study:

“Between the second quarter of 2009 and the fourth quarter of 2010, real national income in the U.S. increased by $528 billion. Pre-tax corporate profits by themselves had increased by $464 billion while aggregate real wages and salaries rose by only $7 billion or only .1%. Over this six quarter period, corporate profits captured 88% of the growth in real national income while aggregate wages and salaries accounted for only slightly more than 1% of the growth in real national income. …The absence of any positive share of national income growth due to wages and salaries received by American workers during the current economic recovery is historically unprecedented.

Continues.

How nice of them. God bless America.

And yet some people still say this isn't a problem, that it'll lead to prosperity for all at some mythical point down the road when the corporations begin giving higher wages.

re: #422 Gus

From that "Conservative Fact Check" site that has a featured page about it...

First, an aside: trickle-down economics does work, regardless of what Business Week thinks or claims. We've seen it just in the last decade: thanks to the Bush Tax Cuts (and despite Obama's efforts to undo them), corporate profits are at an all-time high. Tax cuts for the rich work. What economists understand and which the Business Week author does not is that trickle-down takes time. It's a two-step process:

1. Take the profits earned from a tax cut
2. Invest these profits into higher wages and more jobs, thus helping the economy.

The Bush tax cuts were only enacted ten years ago. Trickle-down takes time, and the economy will begin to see the rewards soon -- that is, of course, unless Obama is successful in raising taxes on the wealthy. If that's the case, he will have undone ten years of economic progress.

See, See! The good times are almost here! Any day now...

They're just sitting on the cash.

The current members of the S&P 500 [.SPX 1409.15 18.12 (+1.3%) ] are sitting on about $800 billion in cash and cash equivalents, the most ever, according to data by Birinyi Associates, even as the unemployment rate has ticked back above 9 percent. Most of this cash and cash equivalents are likely yielding at or below the current 3.6 percent annual rate of inflation, giving it a negative real return.
......
To be sure, relative to market value, cash levels have come down. Cash and cash equivalents as a percentage of the S&P 500’s market capitalization is 7.4 percent, down from a high of 9.2 percent at the start of the bull market, according to Birinyi.

However, this is still well above the 5 percent average during the last bull market, raising the ire of someone else besides the unemployed…shareholders.

“I understand why companies want the flexibility that a cash cushion provides, given the lesson of how dangerous it is to be at the mercy of financing markets, however, some companies have way, way too much cash,” said Karen Finerman, president of Metropolitan Capital Advisors and a ‘Fast Money’ trader. “We should do a call to arms to return cash to shareholders.”

A Plethora of strawmen on the attack!!!

Dear Atheists, from Bodie Hodge

Tired of It All?

Are you tired of all the evil associated with the philosophy of atheism—Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, and so on? After all, most murderers, tyrants, and rapists are not biblical Christians, and most have rejected the God of the Bible. Even if they claim to believe in the God of the Bible, they are not really living like a true Christ follower (who strives to follow God’s Word), are they?

Do you feel conflicted about the fact that atheism has no basis in morality (i.e., no absolute right and wrong; no good, no bad?) If someone stabs you in the back, treats you like nothing, steals from you, or lies to you, it doesn’t ultimately matter in an atheistic worldview where everything and everyone are just chemical reactions doing what chemicals do. And further, knowing that you are essentially no different from a cockroach in an atheistic worldview (since people are just animals) must be disheartening.

Are you tired of the fact that atheism (which is based in materialism, a popular worldview today) has no basis for logic and reasoning? Is it tough trying to get up every day thinking that truth, which is immaterial, really doesn’t exist? Are you bothered by the fact that atheism cannot account for uniformity in nature (the basis by which we can do real science)? Why would everything explode from nothing and, by pure chance, form beautiful laws like E=MC2 or F=MA?

...(lots more like this)...

About the author.

Bodie Hodge

Bodie Hodge is Ken Ham's son in law, and a walking disincentive to nepotism. He works at Answers in Genesis where his job, demurely described as "outreach", is to make fundamentalist Christians look even stupider than in fact they are. As part of this important role, he is in charge of day to day operations at the Creation Museum.
[edit] The righteous lie

Hodge is perhaps best known for expressing the opinion that lying is always wrong, and that the "righteous lie" does not exist. He illustrated this with a hypothetical example about lying to a Nazi soldier to save the life of a Jew that may be hiding in your house.[1] Hodge's reasoning for this sort of behaviour is based around saying that "High Treason" against God outweighs any gain or justification that can be made in the living, material world.

"But consider for a moment that we are all already sentenced to die because we are sinners (Romans 5:12). It is going to happen regardless. If a lie helps keep someone alive for a matter of moments compared to eternity, was the lie, which is high treason against the Creator, worth it?"

Continues.

Setting aside the wingnut side, I have a question about those numbers and it goes to motive.

How much of this is abject greed, and how much of it is an artifact of profitability from costs that were cut to survive the worst months, and a continuing period of inadequate demand? I say this from a perspective of a guy that works in the manufacturing sector. Wall street is all voodoo to me, as far as work experience goes. Where I work it's about patience and caution. Dear Atheists, from Bodie Hodge

Also "No True Scotsman Christian," a world of logical fallacies and some very incorrect assumptions.

Indeed.

Is there a word for a viewpoint (or a set of asserted opinions) that is so wrong, so wrecked, so completely incorrect in its fundamental assumptions, that there's no possible way to untangle or correct it without throwing the whole thing out? That if you wanted to answer or correct this view, you find yourself overwhelmed and don't know where to start?

I guess the first thing to do would be to point out that the #1 source of atheist unhappiness would be humanity's self-destructive behavior in the name of imaginary things... And of course it can be a little difficult transitioning from "god(s) have a plan for me" to "I make my own plans", but other than that, I'm pretty excited to be a self-aware carbon unit. It's an incredibly privileged position, but also a very humble thing.

Besides, religious stories are boring... Science beats the pants off of middle eastern ghost stories any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

The “Jobless and Wageless” Recovery from the Great Recession of 2007-2009: The Magnitude and Sources of Economic Growth Through 2011 I and Their Impacts on Workers, Profits, and Stock Values

Who Has Benefitted from the Post-Great Recession Recovery? A New Look at the Growth Performance of Jobs, Wages, Corporate Profits, and Stock Price Indices During the First Two Years of Recovery

From the last report:

The recovery from the Great Recession has been highly uneven in its effects on workers, wages, profits, stock prices, and savers (bank savings accounts, money market accounts, CDs). Many U.S. adults, especially from low income and middle income households, have reported to poll takers that the U.S. is still in a recession or depression.11 From their vantage point, it still is. The same cannot be said for corporate profits, the CEOs of large corporations, or for those with large stock holdings. The disparities in economic rewards are the largest ever seen in a post World War II recovery.

And yes, I’ve changed my models, mainly in the face of experience. For example, I didn’t take either the liquidity trap or the possibility of self-fulfilling currency crises seriously until 1998, when events in Asia led me to change my views. And I’m proud, not ashamed, of showing that kind of intellectual flexibility. What I don’t believe I’ve done is change my models to support a predetermined political or policy position, which is a definite sin.

So you should try to think in terms of models; it will make you a better person

If I was a CFO or executive I'd be in a cash hoarding mode when the economy flipped, at least at first. There is a risk of hoarding too much and not putting that cash to work for your corporation, which is the concept being posited here. I don't doubt their motivations and on a practical level don't hold it against them to want to grow cash reserves.

On a deeper level something is wrong here. A rising tide lifts all boats does not seem to be happening. It's reasonable to assume it would be better for the country for corporate profits and wages to increase somewhat commensurate. If wealth really is based in the middle class then we as a nation are becoming poorer when the middle class doesn't improve in a recovery.

It seems like some management teams have figured out they're not really beholden to shareholders either.

Not so many people/companies making money via dividends any more. Seems to have switched over to buying and selling shares and thus being dependent on the stock price changing. And being safe and stable doesn't quite generate those swings that allow those wonderful profits from playing with stock options.

What I am trying to understand is how much of this is just a unforeseen result of the desperate measures built in to recovery policies. TARP, and big loans to the biggest producers of cars and financial instruments. It appears we agree trickle down does not work, and that the recovery efforts had to start way up there in the financial atmosphere as if it does work.

(small rant) Damn it we had all the clues we needed to act when the accounting scandals hit a few administrations ago. That as I see it was a big alarm bell we just switched off. Not pointing fingers of blame here, just pissed that we missed it.

At a certain level just sitting on money stretches out the downturn. The economy and businesses feed on each other since if no one is buying, everyone starts cutting back further once inventories build up, and prices in some commodities get driven down further. And once the margins shrink even they start thinking about shutting down their less profitable operations in order to save on cash flow.

And as repeatedly pointed out if consumers feel pinched and buy less (and often just have less) the whole machine starts to grind to a halt.

I might have more sympathy for the mega-corporations if they paid their share of taxes on the money they've been *hoarding*. OR I could see it going in to R&D--especially with the oil companies.

If they were actively trying to find ways to make a profit and wean us off their current product and onto the next cleaner product --no one would begrudge them their profits.

But like the auto industry & tobacco industry and so many others, they won't. They have to satisfy the stockholders today, and long-term thinking is verboten.

Because of JBS/CATO/Hoover inspired trickle down ideology.

In part I'm sure you are right. Also, at least as stated by our President, the banks and Wall street had to get that help or great recession would have been far greater depression.

Hell, we may have been better of if unemployment was still being extended, and that cost offset by smaller loans and assistance to Wall street. Agree?

I'm increasingly convinced we need some big breakthroughs or some hard measures to make it pay to build and develop here rather than anywhere else.

I so want to go to the redwoods for some relaxation and some photography. But for the shots I'd want to get I need some serious climbing gear and a climbing expert to keep me safe. Lazy picnic to relax then a little adrenaline at sunset neat the top of one.

Here's a Nichol's redwood.

Opens in a new tab so people can zoom in. It's 2400 pixels high.

Nope, a tree.

They're spending it all on doomsday prep. We didn't discuss the election, but all the behaviors put together show it left a hell of a mark.

re: #544 Political Atheist

So why were the recovery policies so top heavy? TARP was just about Bush's last act. 4 years since with the people in the executive and Senate that never believed in trickle down.
.

The GOP systematically opposed the bottom-up stuff. The Democrats wanted more spending on things like food stamps, unemployment insurance, etc. etc. The only thing the GOP was really into was tax breaks.

The bailout of the financial companies was needed to stop the economy melting down. That is completely beside the point of the egregious difference in who has profited from the economy. I completely agree we should have strongly regulated the financial industry at the same time as we lifted them up, but there was heavy resistance to that from the GOP and from a couple (but important) corporatist Democrats.

As it stands, the banks are just going to repeat the same sort of mistake-- and it's not just the banks. Many corporations are now using financial instruments more than they are engaging in their key business. Paper profits are a lot easier to make than profits from actually doing stuff.

But mainly, the weakened unions, the low minimum wage, and the various worker protections that have been stripped away have led to a labor market where for anything under highly skilled jobs, employers can dictate terms.

Wall St needed the bailout, no doubt. Obama was right be reluctant to exact their pound of flesh from them while at the same time expecting them to play along with 'the Plan.' But the great mistake, and one I expect I'll probably hold against Obama, is the system won't be fixed so it can happen again.

The problem with the sentiment of sending Wall St to jail is that they can't be sent to jail: what they were doing was legal, or not illegal, or skirted. That does not mean it wasn't wrong, nor that it should'nt be made illegal again.

I'm hoping Obama, or somebody else (Barney Frank) will champion a return to banking segregation. But I'm not holding my breath.

On December 22nd, I'd like to put up a cartoon page. I'd like to show a bunch of Mayans rolling around on the ground laughing, some standing and pointing at the doomsday preppers, just in paroxysms of laughter. "hahahah centuries of advancement beyond us primitives and we still punked ya!"

Trouble is I can't draw worth a darn. So anyone that can and likes the idea go for it.

And still is --any idea of reinstating Glass-Steagall is abhorrent to them. While the blatantly proved they couldn't be trusted, they say they can.

If I hear one more rant about Dodd-Frank or regulation , . . I'm going to scream 'WHAT FUCKING REGULATION????????"

When I ask, no one can ever tell me. It's all fear of what might come or propaganda.

Oh there were a ton of crimes committed, too. Most are being prosecuted as civil suits, because the government lacks the resources at the moment for actual criminal prosecutions of financial stuff. The law is complex, jury trials are always a huge tossup and the corporations have shitloads of money to spend in their defense. Civil prosecutions have a lower bar and companies will pay out to avoid the cost if they're found against.

We need a hell of a lot more financial cops and regulators and investigators. Doesn't help that the SEC apparently turned into a John Grisham novel.

The people who buy and sell money all have to take high level tests and are held to a different standard as "professionals". They may not have committed a crime, but they could be sanctioned on an ethical basis in civil court.

I know there are cases in which an insurance agent has been, but the Wall Street types don't lose their jobs, or get demoted.

Greed is rewarded.

I'm speaking of the very top: derivative market players had an incentive to skirt regulations by creative and complex transactions, creating more shell corporations and complexity. Add to that gutting Glass Steagall, and the game was on.

I did so much reading about that last year . . . ..

The gutting began over 30 years ago. There was a clip of Alan Greenspan testifying before Congress in which he said (paraphrase) "There is no reason responsible bankers cannot be trusted with derivatives."

Responsible being the key word. Gone is the myth of the old banker from B&W movies --they can't be trusted. None of them. Way too much money involved.

So, why are you going thru old threads looking at the dings?

Is this a new psychosis related to the holidays?

re: #576 Henchman Ghazi-808

Fiscal conservatism as I happen to view it includes requires regulatory enforcement up to the task of the most complex instruments.
How bad the SEC got can be seen with the Maddoff scandal. The crash. And again they had fair warning in the 90's. We, they, the people in charge dropped the ball. Re segregating banks from investment sales sounds fine to me. Let Bank of America split into a couple truly separate pieces. Let the consumer bank be unencumbered of the burdens that come from a split focus. They broke up Ma Bell. Same can be done to BofA and Goldman.
