It's quickly ceasing to be the "biggest thing since Watergate" and slowly metamorphosing into the driving excuse for opposition to Susan Rice when her nomination ends up before the Senate GOP. Thing is, I very much doubt the GOP wants to open a discussion about SecState nominees who have been less than honest with the American people.

I'm in trouble! I just ate a 1/3 of a Boston cream pie, a Coconut cream pie, a couple pieces of pumpkin pie covered in cream. A stupid big piece of Dutch Apple with blue bonnet vanilla ice cream.
I'm dying here..:) My favorite is white bread with mayo stacked with sliced breast meat covered with pepper and tomato and cheese and more mayo heated up on the grill..

I love those reviews, but I suspect he's more or less expected to negatively review almost everything. I haven't seen his AC3 review yet.

IMHO, the game itself is okay, but the characters and the environment are nowhere near as good as AC2 and even AC:Brotherhood. Ezio Auditore was a great video game character, and understandably hard to top.

IMHO, the game itself is okay, but the characters and the environment are nowhere near as good as AC2 and even AC:Brotherhood. Ezio Auditore was a great video game character, and understandably hard to top.

Yahtzee's said a couple times that it's his job as a critic to harp on the things he found wrong with a game, even if he has to dig for them. But if he finds a game he truly did like, then he's been known to give the odd positive review now and then. Most recent one I can think of was XCom.

The GOP must stop letting us down like this. We can’t change the media; we can’t make the media do their jobs honestly, and we certainly can’t assume that the media’s ever going to do the right thing.

We can’t lose the Susan Rice debate on the facts. The facts are on our side. The same goes for Libya. But unless and until we’re fully prepared on the facts and willing to then take the debate directly to the media, we’ll keep losing the game, because we drop too many easy pop-ups.

As I recall, during the election season, Fox tried to press Condi Rice into joining the Benghazi frenzy, but she refused to play ball. From late October:

It's how things are done. Teams have the shirts and hats produced in advance and if they don't win the championship the gear gets donated overseas and written off as a charitable donation. At least by donating it people in poor countries get clothes they otherwise might not have been able to afford.

High graphics versions of Doom with crappy stories that would make Hollywood blush with embarrassment. I think I'll hold out for the next Sim City installment. Even if it sucks I'll still get a decent amount of gameplay out of it.

He's expected to give snarky reviews but I do trust his opinion, sometimes you have to read between the lines. Although I have a bit of disposable cash these days I'm tired of throwing money away on crappy games. High graphics versions of Doom with crappy stories that would make Hollywood blush with embarrassment. I think I'll hold out for the next Sim City installment. Even if it sucks I'll still get a decent amount of gameplay out of it.

It's not exactly Shakespeare, but the backstory that Valve has given the characters in Team Fortress 2 is pretty entertaining. They have been fleshing out the universe with a series of online comics. Humorous stuff.

Think the big appeal of such sandbox games is that there's pretty much plenty of open room for mods. I'm having a hard time naming any big-name titles anymore exclusive to the PC.

Went about as far as I'm ever going to in the Ender's Game saga, same with Hyperion and Honor Harrington. I don't get into the series stuff much--after a while it seems the authors just run out of stuff and are on contract to a publisher and have to write something . . .anything.

Speaker for the Dead was excellent. The audio of the series was excellent as well. Multiple cast with Stefan Rudnicki--if you don't recognize the name, you would definitely recognize the voice. Anything he narrates will be good.

The Joan Vinge is 20 hours. I may have to do that one.

The suspended student, sophomore Andrea Hernandez, was notified by the Northside Independent School District in San Antonio that she won’t be able to continue attending John Jay High School unless she wears the badge around her neck, which she has been refusing to do. Is C.S. Friedman any good? "Downbelow Station" sounds very familiar, but I can't remember why.

Downbelow Station is C.J. Cherryh. I haven't read or listened to it, but I'm a big fan of some of her other work, in particular the Chanur and Foreigner series. She's one of the best I know of at creating believable alien societies. Unfortunately I can't tell you if the audio versions are any good.

As adults we are surrounded by so much GPS technology, I think the Big Brother concept is rather moot. The future is here. Some things are inevitable when you have a large and diverse population and so much technology.

Just consider some recent examples from over the summer. When Mitt Romney visited Michigan, he joked about not needing a birth certificate to prove he was from there. Not very funny? OK, sure. Poor taste? Eh, maybe, I guess. (Mighty white of you, gomer.) "The basest and the most despicable bigotry we might be able to imagine"? Errr, no. And yet that's what one respected "expert" on race, Michael Eric Dyson, called it on MSNBC. Rather than show some skepticism at the claim, MSNBC host Alex Wagner agreed that Romney was "scraping the very bottom of this sort of racist other-ist narrative."

Might start with The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich and go from there.

Another fact that the "Nazis were all gay!" folks forget is that the Nazi regime was very big on the family unit and big families, to the point that they paid families for having large families.

i think one of the best recent books is the third reich in power. evans really does the footwork to give you the detail about exactly what they were up to in detail. since he's writing only a few years ago and is very aware of contemporary political bullshit, at one point he covers the issue of socialism in nazi germany, i.e. did the nazis in power actually practice it at all. answer, in detail, uh actually they worked hand in glove with the big capitalists

it's even easier to find out that any actual gay socialist nazis were mostly found in the s.a. which of course the ss massacred early on in the 'night of the long knives", going on to denounce roehm loudly both for his homosexuality as well to a lesser extent for his espousal of actual socialism

Yeah, I've always loved the charge of "socialism" being laid at the feet of a regime where some of the top party members were major business owners who exploited their party connections to get away with virtually anything, such as exploiting Jewish labor to fulfill every increasing quotas, knowing that they didn't have to worry about matters like basic humanity decency.

I generally try for a good playthrough, so feel compelled to go check for the ghoul's friend. Which means I have to stealth my way to the Nightkin leader, then to the ghoul, then to his friend's corpse, then back to the ghoul. Gotta keep a healthy supply of Stealth boys for that.

I generally try for a good playthrough, so feel compelled to go check for the ghoul's friend. Which means I have to stealth my way to the Nightkin leader, then to the ghoul, then to his friend's corpse, then back to the ghoul. Gotta keep a healthy supply of Stealth boys for that.

Or kill the ghoul, get the manifest and tell the Nightkin there are no stealthboys.

In FO:3 if you killed one of the wandering merchants, you could loot all his stuff. In NV, all you can get is the stuff he had equipped. What a ripoff.

Especially aggravating as it's pretty hard to avoid Fiends if you wanna get to Vault 3, which you have to if you want to complete either the Khans quests or the Brotherhood quest for Power Armor training.

In answer to your question: My sister stayed in Pennsylvania and did not come home for Thanksgiving. It's likely to be the same way for Christmas. She came home for a week in September, and that's likely to be it for this year.

My parents and I went to Lawry's on Ontario Street in downtown Chicago (Magnificent Mile area). The turkey and prime rib were very good there.

B. All Palestinian factions shall stop all hostilities from the Gaza Strip against Israel including rocket attacks and all attacks along the border.

C. Opening the crossings and facilitating the movements of people and transfer of goods and refraining from restricting residents' free movements and targeting residents in border areas and procedures of implementation shall be dealt with after 24 hours from the start of the ceasefire.

D. Other matters as may be requested shall be addressed.

2: Implementation mechanisms:

A. Setting up the zero hour for the ceasefire understanding to enter into effect.

B. Egypt shall receive assurances from each party that the party commits to what was agreed upon.

Now, economists from Northeastern University have released a study that finds our sluggish economic recovery has almost solely benefited corporations. According to the study:

“Between the second quarter of 2009 and the fourth quarter of 2010, real national income in the U.S. increased by $528 billion. Pre-tax corporate profits by themselves had increased by $464 billion while aggregate real wages and salaries rose by only $7 billion or only .1%. Over this six quarter period, corporate profits captured 88% of the growth in real national income while aggregate wages and salaries accounted for only slightly more than 1% of the growth in real national income. …The absence of any positive share of national income growth due to wages and salaries received by American workers during the current economic recovery is historically unprecedented.

First, an aside: trickle-down economics does work, regardless of what Business Week thinks or claims. We've seen it just in the last decade: thanks to the Bush Tax Cuts (and despite Obama's efforts to undo them), corporate profits are at an all-time high. Tax cuts for the rich work. What economists understand and which the Business Week author does not is that trickle-down takes time. It's a two-step process:

1. Take the profits earned from a tax cut
2. Invest these profits into higher wages and more jobs, thus helping the economy.

The Bush tax cuts were only enacted ten years ago. Trickle-down takes time, and the economy will begin to see the rewards soon -- that is, of course, unless Obama is successful in raising taxes on the wealthy. If that's the case, he will have undone ten years of economic progress.

Some do, some don't. To the credit of the company I work for they didn't. They did halt some projects that were on the table prior to 2008 and some capital upgrades, opting instead for us to make do with some older equipment fixes for the interim. They are just now getting back to operating expenses prior to the slowdown.

When common people lose a bunch of income they don't have anybody to lay off.

To me, the primary purpose of a watch is as a tool. Are you tired of the fact that atheism (which is based in materialism, a popular worldview today) has no basis for logic and reasoning? Is it tough trying to get up every day thinking that truth, which is immaterial, really doesn’t exist? Hodge is perhaps best known for expressing the opinion that lying is always wrong, and that the "righteous lie" does not exist. He illustrated this with a hypothetical example about lying to a Nazi soldier to save the life of a Jew that may be hiding in your house.[1] Hodge's reasoning for this sort of behaviour is based around saying that "High Treason" against God outweighs any gain or justification that can be made in the living, material world.

"But consider for a moment that we are all already sentenced to die because we are sinners (Romans 5:12). It is going to happen regardless. If a lie helps keep someone alive for a matter of moments compared to eternity, was the lie, which is high treason against the Creator, worth it?"

That if you wanted to answer or correct this view, you find yourself overwhelmed and don't know where to start?

I guess the first thing to do would be to point out that the #1 source of atheist unhappiness would be humanity's self-destructive behavior in the name of imaginary things... And of course it can be a little difficult transitioning from "god(s) have a plan for me" to "I make my own plans", but other than that, I'm pretty excited to be a self-aware carbon unit. It's an incredibly privileged position, but also a very humble thing.

Besides, religious stories are boring... Science beats the pants off of middle eastern ghost stories any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

If I was a CFO or executive I'd be in a cash hoarding mode when the economy flipped, at least at first. There is a risk of hoarding too much and not putting that cash to work for your corporation, which is the concept being posited here. I don't doubt their motivations and on a practical level don't hold it against them to want to grow cash reserves.

On a deeper level something is wrong here. A rising tide lifts all boats does not seem to be happening. It's reasonable to assume it would be better for the country for corporate profits and wages to increase somewhat commensurate. If wealth really is based in the middle class then we as a nation are becoming poorer when the middle class doesn't improve in a recovery.

Not so many people/companies making money via dividends any more. Seems to have switched over to buying and selling shares and thus being dependent on the stock price changing. And being safe and stable doesn't quite generate those swings that allow those wonderful profits from playing with stock options.

What I am trying to understand is how much of this is just a unforeseen result of the desperate measures built in to recovery policies. TARP, and big loans to the biggest producers of cars and financial instruments. It appears we agree trickle down does not work, and that the recovery efforts had to start way up there in the financial atmosphere as if it does work.

(small rant) Damn it we had all the clues we needed to act when the accounting scandals hit a few administrations ago. That as I see it was a big alarm bell we just switched off. Not pointing fingers of blame here, just pissed that we missed it.

At a certain level just sitting on money stretches out the downturn. The economy and businesses feed on each other since if no one is buying, everyone starts cutting back further once inventories build up, and prices in some commodities get driven down further. And once the margins shrink even they start thinking about shutting down their less profitable operations in order to save on cash flow.

And as repeatedly pointed out if consumers feel pinched and buy less (and often just have less) the whole machine starts to grind to a halt.

I might have more sympathy for the mega-corporations if they paid their share of taxes on the money they've been *hoarding*. OR I could see it going in to R&D--especially with the oil companies.

If they were actively trying to find ways to make a profit and wean us off their current product and onto the next cleaner product --no one would begrudge them their profits.

But like the auto industry & tobacco industry and so many others, they won't. They have to satisfy the stockholders today, and long-term thinking is verboten.

I think it has more to do with economic instability. Fiscal cliff here in the US, Europe is still in serious trouble, rising food prices are hitting hard in Africa and Asia. In general the global economy is still in a very fragile state.

In part I'm sure you are right. Also, at least as stated by our President, the banks and Wall street had to get that help or great recession would have been far greater depression.

Hell, we may have been better of if unemployment was still being extended, and that cost offset by smaller loans and assistance to Wall street. Agree?

I'm increasingly convinced we need some big breakthroughs or some hard measures to make it pay to build and develop here rather than anywhere else.

So why were the recovery policies so top heavy? TARP was just about Bush's last act. 4 years since with the people in the executive and Senate that never believed in trickle down.

The GOP systematically opposed the bottom-up stuff. The Democrats wanted more spending on things like food stamps, unemployment insurance, etc. etc. The only thing the GOP was really into was tax breaks.

The bailout of the financial companies was needed to stop the economy melting down. That is completely beside the point of the egregious difference in who has profited from the economy. I completely agree we should have strongly regulated the financial industry at the same time as we lifted them up, but there was heavy resistance to that from the GOP and from a couple (but important) corporatist Democrats.

As it stands, the banks are just going to repeat the same sort of mistake-- and it's not just the banks. Many corporations are now using financial instruments more than they are engaging in their key business. Paper profits are a lot easier to make than profits from actually doing stuff.

But mainly, the weakened unions, the low minimum wage, and the various worker protections that have been stripped away have led to a labor market where for anything under highly skilled jobs, employers can dictate terms.

Wall St needed the bailout, no doubt. Obama was right be reluctant to exact their pound of flesh from them while at the same time expecting them to play along with 'the Plan.' But the great mistake, and one I expect I'll probably hold against Obama, is the system won't be fixed so it can happen again.

The problem with the sentiment of sending Wall St to jail is that they can't be sent to jail: what they were doing was legal, or not illegal, or skirted. That does not mean it wasn't wrong, nor that it should'nt be made illegal again.

I'm hoping Obama, or somebody else (Barney Frank) will champion a return to banking segregation. But I'm not holding my breath.

And still is --any idea of reinstating Glass-Steagall is abhorrent to them. While the blatantly proved they couldn't be trusted, they say they can.

If I hear one more rant about Dodd-Frank or regulation , . . I'm going to scream 'WHAT FUCKING REGULATION????????"

When I ask, no one can ever tell me. It's all fear of what might come or propaganda.

Oh there were a ton of crimes committed, too. Most are being prosecuted as civil suits, because the government lacks the resources at the moment for actual criminal prosecutions of financial stuff. The law is complex, jury trials are always a huge tossup and the corporations have shitloads of money to spend in their defense. Civil prosecutions have a lower bar and companies will pay out to avoid the cost if they're found against.

We need a hell of a lot more financial cops and regulators and investigators. Doesn't help that the SEC apparently turned into a John Grisham novel.

The people who buy and sell money all have to take high level tests and are held to a different standard as "professionals". They may not have committed a crime, but they could be sanctioned on an ethical basis in civil court.

I know there are cases in which an insurance agent has been, but the Wall Street types don't lose their jobs, or get demoted.

Greed is rewarded.

I did so much reading about that last year . . . ..

The gutting began over 30 years ago. There was a clip of Alan Greenspan testifying before Congress in which he said (paraphrase) "There is no reason responsible bankers cannot be trusted with derivatives."

Responsible being the key word. Gone is the myth of the old banker from B&W movies --they can't be trusted. None of them. Way too much money involved.

Fiscal conservatism as I happen to view it includes requires regulatory enforcement up to the task of the most complex instruments.
How bad the SEC got can be seen with the Maddoff scandal. The crash. And again they had fair warning in the 90's. We, they, the people in charge dropped the ball. Re segregating banks from investment sales sounds fine to me. Let Bank of America split into a couple truly separate pieces. Let the consumer bank be unencumbered of the burdens that come from a split focus. They broke up Ma Bell. Same can be done to BofA and Goldman.
