Fox News Cuts Off Interview on Benghazi When Reporter Refuses to Play Along

“Operating as a wing of the Republican Party”
Politics • Views: 41,277

A classic moment today, as Pulitzer Prize-winning defense reporter Thomas E. Ricks took the fight to the epicenter of right wing propaganda, Fox News, and told anchor man Jon Scott that Fox is “operating as a wing of the Republican Party.”

When Ricks pointed out that Fox News never seemed to care one bit about the many civilian contractors killed in Iraq, Jon Scott cut the interview short. Notice that Scott has no idea how many contractors died.

The New York Times has more details: Guest on Fox News to Discuss Benghazi Attack Is Given a Quick Exit.

Thomas E. Ricks, the veteran defense reporter and author, said he expected his Monday morning appearance on Fox News to last about three minutes. It ended, in fact, after 90 seconds — his last sentence was a description of the network as “a wing of the Republican Party.”

After the interview, a Fox News staffer told Mr. Ricks that he had been rude.

The strange and unusually short interview segment quickly gained the attention of media critics, because criticism of Fox News is rarely aired on Fox News. Mr. Ricks said in an e-mail message afterward that he did not think he was being rude. “I thought I was being honest,” he said. “They asked my opinion, and I gave it.”

No man (or news organization) has a good enough memory to make them a completely successful liar.

That's sometimes an issue with analysts: The network wants to hear elaboration of its narrative, not hear actual analysis. This is because actual analysis is normally not packagable into sound bites and especially for FOx poses a problem when wingnuts go crazy after being contradicted.

Fox: If we wanted your opinion, we'd have given it to you...

Have you seen this article? I wanted to get your opinion on it:

The Port Authority’s Cloudy Future

New Yorkers have watched One World Trade Center gradually define the downtown skyline. The massive glass-and-steel building should reach its full height and be ready for tenants within 18 months. But to those tenants, One World Trade may come to symbolize not victory over terror but rather their own miserable commutes. Most of the white-collar workers who will stream into the tower depend on subways, buses, tunnels, and bridges to get to Manhattan. And over the past decade, the government agency in charge of much of the region’s transportation—the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey—has neglected that core responsibility in favor of rebuilding lower Manhattan.

The good news is that the World Trade Center project (technically, the first big phase of a larger, two-phase plan) is closer to completion than to commencement. Over the past three years, not only has the $3.9 billion One World Trade Center (known in the planning stages as the Freedom Tower) risen ever higher; other projects have taken shape downtown as well, including a $3.7 billion train hub, a vehicle security center to receive the trucks that will serve the new office towers, and a remade streetscape. Even a long-running dispute over who will run the 9/11 memorial and museum at the site has been solved.

Unfortunately, the Port Authority has barely begun to pay for all this rebuilding. Its share of the bill comes to $7.7 billion, which it has borrowed. And to repay that massive debt, the agency will have to divert toll revenue from bridges and tunnels and fee revenue from airports—money that won’t be available for the transportation projects that New York badly needs.

Hagee: Gays Defiling America's Purity

Televangelist John Hagee warns that America is in decline because of the size of government and same-sex marriage. The right-wing pastor who has claimed that the U.S. will face God’s judgment for electing “a leader who is for men marrying men” told his Cornerstone Church that Americans are beginning to experience “tyranny” and the loss of divine favor: “America does not have purity when men marry men and women marry women, it does not have purity.”

Great point on the Iraqi contractors. Hadn't thought about that for a while. I remember watching some of the coverage about the truck drivers that had been shot there and then treated like dirt when they came back home. If they were lucky to get back home. This is all bullshit and highly politicized. This kind of treatment and reaction would be unheard of during the Bush regime.

re: #28 Dark_Falcon

One can argue that the PANY would have undertaken more transit/infrastructure work but for the WTC work - that's the gist of the argument. There's some truth to the fact that the PANYNJ has had to focus on rebuilding at the WTC and that's taken away from its core job of improving transit infrastructure in the region but the Port Authority got away from its core job decades ago when it got into the real estate business in the first place when it went and obtained the land to build the WTC in the 1960s into the 1970s.

The agency is spending quite a bit on rebuilding, but at this point, the costs for rebuilding are largely on corporate entities (Silverstein for one). The Port Authority's responsible for overseeing more than $1.2 billion in overruns on the PATH hub (the same PATH hub that just got flooded out in Sandy and where PATH service resumed beginning this morning, but not without a hiccup).

The PANY can raise tolls/fares, and it's done so - and the $1.2 billion it expects from the hikes fits the overruns on the PATH hub. The agency has a full slate of transit projects on its table including raising the Bayonne Bridge for post-Panamax shipping, rebuilding the Lincoln tunnel helix, restringing the GWB stringers, and airport renovations at LGA and EWR as well as planning for a Goethals Bridge replacement.

If the PANY didn't have to do WTC rebuilding, it's possible the agency could have moved ahead on a PATH expansion to Newark Airport, could have better funded the ARC/Gateway tunnel scheme, extended Airtrain to LGA, and expanded port facilities. Those are long term projects and some are moving ahead even with the full slate of projects on its hands.

It's also important to remember that the PANY is a bistate agency answerable to both governors of NY and NJ, so they're going to do what their respective governors want them to focus on. In effect, that means that infrastructure improvements in one state have to get signed off by the governor from the other - and reciprocity/"equal" project time/status comes in to play. That too leads to gridlock bureaucratically as the agency tries to balance what is done in both states leaving no one truly happy with what they're doing.
