No, Andrew W.K. is Not the State Department's Cultural Ambassador to the Middle East

...The US government appointing a rocker-diplomat—known for partying til he pukes, covering himself in blood, dabbling in the My Little Pony-based subculture of "bronies," and sing-screaming about the McLaughlin Group—to represent American interests in the Kingdom of Bahrain? That sounds totally plausible! Nevertheless, a host of media outlets ran with the news without bothering to check with State Department, including UPI, the Huffington Post, New York magazine's culture blog "Vulture," Pitchfork Media, Breitbart.com, Mediaite, DCist, NME, Gawker, and Russia Today.

Pitchfork used to have a much better list up at one time, what happened to that, I don't know, the newer one is much more commercial. There is remarkably little real independent stuff on it.

Germany had a tradition of welfare programs in Prussia and Saxony that began as early as the 1840s. In the 1880s his social insurance programs were the first in the world and became the model for other countries and the basis of the modern welfare state.[32] Bismarck introduced old age pensions, accident insurance, medical care and unemployment insurance. He won conservative support by promising to undercut the appeal of Socialists—the Socialists always voted against his proposals, fearing they would reduce the grievances of the industrial workers. His paternalistic programs won the support of German industry because its goals were to win the support of the working classes for the Empire and reduce the outflow of emigrants to America, where wages were higher but welfare did not exist.

what the well educated moron is raving about these days

France is not an outlier. Besides Greece and Spain, and the other PIIGS in Europe, we have the poorest example of all: Japan. John Mauldin describes Japan as a "bug in search of a windshield" Twenty years of Keynesian economics (al la Richard Koo) has done nothing except let the demographics outrun the economy.

Expect Japan to find that windshield in the next year or two.

The combination of ObamaCare and the resolution of the impending fiscal cliff are likely to cause. not another recession, but a depression. The Fed has no arrows left in its quiver. The combination of frantic money printing facing the lack of investment due to regime uncertainty, no long produces any effect except, maybe, to drive up asset prices and bankrupt those who rely on interest income. Five years of no interest has harmed the economy as much as the money printing has been designed to help.

Obama has won, but now he will reap what he has sown

so beware, earthlings - all the countries of earth have fallen victim to the cruel scourge of rampant socialism, and will soon be economically prostrate

A normally blandly discussed nod at some sort of feel-good moment, one of the European nations (Sweden I think) brought up the issue of having separate security lines for men and women entering the conference center - a subtle but real reminder that the host nation (Qatar) does not have truly equal rights for women.

One of the key pieces of conservative ideology is that our rights originate from God, not from mankind. This is often used to bludgeon Obama for not metnioning God enough whenever he does or fails to do so.

And it will always be their excuse for not obeying laws made by people in a free and democratic process because they are seen as "ungodly". And if God speaks to someone and tells him to beat up his own kids, who is to argue, right? Didn't God tell Abraham to kill his own son?

Try to make it like 'regular" time as best you can

If you had to be at work at (say) 9 a.m., you would sleep 7-9 hours prior till 7:30-8:00 a.m or so. Get up, shower dress and go to work. I try to do the same thing going in at 10 p.m.. Sleep 1 p.m till about 8-8:30, get up, shower, get dressed and drive to work.

I used to work every morning at 6am for a shipping company. that was okay once I got used to it, and I enjoyed getting off work at 3pm every day, especially in the summer.

The people I most pitied were the poor dispatchers who spent one week doing 4am-12pm and then the next week doing 12pm to 8pm. Totally kills any ability to have a life outside work and sleep.

Yeah, I just showed it to my dad and realized, along with the other classics that it's spoofing and homaging, it's giving a bunch of big nods to Rockford. Stark lives in a trailer, the classic car + escape sequences, Julius as a kind of Angel-like figure, etc.

The show gets better every time I watch. At least there's a whole 20 episodes.

Joe Scarborough: ‘Grover’s Not The Bad Guy’

"Morning Joe" co-host Joe Scarborough said Tuesday that the only reason Grover Norquist has power in Washington is because he chose to fight against taxes, an issue Scarborough said conservatives believe in regardless of the anti-tax pledge.

"The only reason why Grover has any power is because he chose an issue that guys like me believe in anyway," Scarborough said. "… Grover's not the bad guy. If you hate Grover, then you hate the elected representatives that signed the pledge just so they could have a piece of paper to hold up to represent what they were doing. I never, in seven years in Congress, met somebody going, 'I don't know what to do because Grover might be upset.' No, they go, 'I'm not voting to raise taxes because I'll have my ass primaried, and I'm not coming back here. And I like getting elected.'"

You know Joe, I might believe you if the guy whose toes you're sucking didn't have a wall dedicated to the people whose political careers he's destroyed for refusing to sign/going back on his pledge.

Yeah Norquist seems to relish in his ability to ruin people who go against him. Honestly when I saw former Virginia Republican congressman and now GMU professor Tom Davis speak, I was really glad to see him call out Norquist's stupid tax pledge. I've said it here before but I would resent someone equally dogmatic as Grover on the left. I know conservatives don't like tax raises but signing a pledge to one man is so fundamentally stupid. I say, they're free to sign Grover's stupid ass pledge but I don't want to hear them bitch about the president and Congressional Democrats being at fault for the deficit when Grover's Republican puppets in Congress refuse to show any political flexibility whatsoever. There's just no realistic way to fix the debt only by cutting spending.

Axelrod: Ryan Pick A Big Surprise

Top Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod said one of the biggest surprises of the campaign was Mitt Romney's selection of Paul Ryan as his running mate, according to the Associated Press.

Speaking to students at the University of Chicago Monday, Axelrod said the Ryan pick helped Romney play to his base when he should have been reaching out to more Americans. He also said that the campaign had expected Romney to pick either Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) or former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

Axelrod added that the Ryan pick was less shocking than Sen. John McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in 2008.

I do have to admit that it came as a surprise to me when Ryan was announced as Willard's running mate. I had expected him to go for the "bland and blander" approach of Portman or bringing T-Paw onto the ticket to be the Bible-thumper that he couldn't be openly.

I wasn't too shocked. Romney needed someone who was popular with the conservative base. I thought Pawlenty while a possibility was unlikely since he's as bland as Mitt. Ditto Portman and I think there was a worry that Portman could be tied to the Bush administration since he was Bush's OMB director and later trade representative. I thought there was a possibility that it would be Rubio but I thought it unlikely since Mitt's not the ambitious type. So, yeah Ryan made sense for me. I knew it would be an establishment white guy though regardless of who it was.

This is true. What was amusing to watch was seeing Romney and his surrogates shake off the Ryan Plan as a "disagreement" between Mitt and Ryan. True enough but it's obvious that the Ryan Plan is why he was chosen because without the Ryan Plan, who really is Paul Ryan? It was a stupid game they tried to play and I wouldn't be shocked to see that mentioned in one of the tell alls that will eventually come out.I bet you Ryan himself especially disliked it because he knows he was chosen because of the plan and then got pretty much muted on it.

Douchebag liberal networks use something called 'facts' in their reporting. That's why people pay attention to them. Fox doesn't, which is why people like Mitt Romney live there - they create their own reality and assume that the only people who exist are the less than 1% of the population that watches their shows exclusively.

RINO Hunters Fire Warning Shots At Republican Senate Candidates

After two disappointing election cycles, Republican leaders demanded that conservative groups end their war on electable primary candidates or risk handing the Senate to the Democrats in 2014. This week, the groups delivered their reply: “Nuts!”

Activists on the right launched a volley of criticism at 2014’s first major Senate hopeful on Monday, Rep. Shelly Moore Capito (R-WV). Capito is considered a strong contender for the seat held by Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), especially if he decides to retire, but her conservative detractors are demanding a purer candidate.

It's inevitable to me really and part of human nature. but when you distort shit like Fox does, I have a problem and I laugh at your journalistic credentials. Plus they appeal to the mean and stupid in their viewers by having asshats like O'Reilly, Hannity, and in the past Beck have shows on their network.

Good Morning all,

It's a nice bright, clear & crisp (15 F) morning up here in Northern Wisconsin. But I've got a way to beat that - starting with a 5 lb whole chicken and a pot of water that will, by nightfall, be chicken noodle soup.

So how is your day shaping up?

Drizzly and high 30s in Philly today. Chance of converting to snow.

On the cooking front it's turkey rice soup today. Made some nice broth from the smoked turkey carcass, so it's time to work in the vegetables, some chunk turkey bits and a cup or so of cooked rice to make dinner. Maybe some homemade biscuits to go with it.

I find it funny that people make a big deal about calling Fox right wing. But nobody blinks with MSNBC and all the other douchebag liberal networks. Gee, Fox is right wing? Well, no fucking shit. Sheesh.

Do we have to have this discussion? Again?

MSNBC has a bias, but they don't disguise it and pretend they're "fair and balanced". Fox presents itself as neutral; many of their viewers buy into that bullshit. The smarter ones know it's bullshit and are just happy to have someone maintain their bubble.

As for "other liberal douchebag networks"? Are you fucking kidding? If we had "other liberal douchebag networks", thousands of American soldiers would have celebrated Thanksgiving last Thursday with their families, rather than getting killed in Iraq.

I'm so sick of people complaining about "liberal" media because every six months they call a conservative out on their bullshit.

Well, he's being counseled/preached to by a nutter.

— Why he believes Jay-Z is a Freemason with ties to the devil

— How he alleges Obama's pro-gay agenda has similarities to Hitler

— How he claims NYC's gas crisis can lead to cannibalism

Hudson had bizarrely warned his followers that the gas crisis could turn into a food crisis, forcing women to eat their own children: "Your baby might start looking like a chicken wing."

It is unclear if Angus believes everything the pastor is saying, but in the now-viral "testimony" video, the young man only had praise for his spiritual guide. "I love watching ForeRunner Chronicles,” Angus said. “All the information is so great…Your videos have no doubt been a blessing to me."

Because Sam Walton isn't his kids.

While Sam was a live, working for Wal-mart was actually a good thing. Sam hated unions, but felt that the best way to prevent unionization was to ensure workers didn't want or need them. Employees got decent benefits - and ask someone who worked then about the stock options for everyone.

You can see the break if you get the right data. It happens about a year and a half after Sam died.

Not to say Walmart was great back then, but then and now are totally different places anyway.

The other day I was in the mall, and wandered past the Tesla outlet there. It's a pretty sleek looking car, though I'm not quite sure about the ergonomics inside.

The big difference between the Tesla and other EVs? The Teslas have their battery packs integrated into the chassis under the passenger compartment. That means that the center of gravity gets lower to the road, and seems like it should improve handling dynamics.

That they're running outlets in malls has raised hackles from other conventional dealerships who are complaining about how those outlets are operating.

China's Party Paper Falls for Onion Joke About Kim

The online version of China's Communist Party newspaper has hailed a report by The Onion naming North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un as the "Sexiest Man Alive" — not realizing it is satire.

The People's Daily on Tuesday ran a 55-page photo spread on its website in a tribute to the round-faced leader, under the headline "North Korea's top leader named The Onion's Sexiest Man Alive for 2012."

Quoting the Onion's spoof report, the Chinese newspaper wrote: "''With his devastatingly handsome, round face, his boyish charm, and his strong, sturdy frame, this Pyongyang-bred heartthrob is every woman's dream come true."

"Blessed with an air of power that masks an unmistakable cute, cuddly side, Kim made this newspaper's editorial board swoon with his impeccable fashion sense, chic short hairstyle, and, of course, that famous smile," the People's Daily cited the Onion as saying.

About this Ricks thing.

In the Hollywood Reporter article, Clemente is quoted as saying:

"He apologized in our offices afterward but doesn’t have the strength of character to do that publicly."

Ricks, of course disagrees:

"Please ask Mr. Clemente what the words of my supposed apology were. I'd be interested to know," he said. "Frankly, I don't remember any such apology."

All well and good, but Clemente looks to me in this case as the poster boy for Fox News' and the entire right wing's fundamentally childish and destructive attitude. It boils down to: "If someone disagrees with you in your face (or worst of the worst, on air), then 1) cut them off, and 2) attempt to destroy them."

And Clemente for his bald lie and attempt at character assassination ('strength of character' my ass) to the media, will still have a job tomorrow. It steams me.

As someone points out, the assumption by most Republicans is that immigrants refer to those from Latin America.

This, naturally, confuses Asian Americans, over half of which are first generation immigrants, into thinking that the fiery Republican talk about immigrants is about THEM (and a large, large portion of Chinese Americans are actually descended from illegal immigrants).

Hm. Asian Americans assuming "immigrants" actually means "immigrants." Maybe they should have learned English before coming over.

Buried in the last paragraph of the text is an admission that this was only among "Americans living in Israel". They also have run editorials by the Geller associated ZOA, so I'm extremely wary of this source, to say the least.

Lerma is a far-right Russian Orthodox nationalist. Mostly he writes garbage for Russia Today. Pravda doesn't give a shit what they "print" as long as it's anti-American. Pravda didn't put that up because they specifically hate Obama but only because they can use it to attack the USA. The wingnuts don't get that of course because they're stupid.

Hey, does anyone know anything about the editorial stance of Algemeiner? I've been trying to ask this in the pages but nothing ever comes out of it.

A few people have been linking to their website recently. During the election I noticed that they ran misleading stories like this:

Buried in the last paragraph of the text is an admission that this was only among "Americans living in Israel". They also have run editorials by the Geller associated ZOA, so I'm extremely wary of this source, to say the least.

Editorially it's a generic pro-Israel site but most of their stories are poorly sourced with obscure blog posts or unreliable sites like Debka. I don't recognize any of the main contributors but I would consider much of the content to be junk. The worthwhile stories the do run with can be found from better sources.

re: #242 Coracle

About this Ricks thing.

In the Hollywood Reporter article, Clemente is quoted as saying:

Ricks, of course disagrees:

All well and good, but Clemente looks to me in this case as the poster boy for Fox News' and the entire right wing's fundamentally childish and destructive attitude. It boils down to: "If someone disagrees with you in your face (or worst of the worst, on air), then 1) cut them off, and 2) attempt to destroy them."

And Clemente for his bald lie and attempt at character assassination ('strength of character' my ass) to the media, will still have a job tomorrow. It steams me.

From that:

In a statement to THR, Clemente says: "I'm surprised by the General’s utter dishonesty. I'll refresh his memory – what he said following the segment was, 'Sorry… I’m tired from a non-stop book tour.' Perhaps now he can finally get some rest."

Ricks is not, nor has he ever been, a "General". DOes Clemente even know who/what he's talking about?

Amazing? Shocking? Not at all. A prominent Lubbock Republican once suggested re-opening the investigation of the 1993 WTC bombing to look for indications of Israeli Mossad involvement. This could only suppose, of course, that "the Juice" are so powerful and disloyal as to completely subvert the criminal justice system in this country. You don't have to be a canine to hear that dog-whistle.
On top of that, we have crazed libertarians everywhere flocking to the openly antisemitic Russia Today as a news source. Our local libertarian party chair suggests that Russia Today is the only reliable news source anywhere, since American media are "under control." He doesn't say by whom but it isn't hard to guess.

The Tesla Model S just won as Motor Trend Car of the Year for 2013. So apparently it has something going for it.

At ~$50,000 for the 160 mile ranged vehicle it's a bit pricey for most.

But now, going off topic, Link
the midwest-southwest drought is shaping up to dust bowl.

There's a political tipping point to be had here, when it comes to climate change.

The evidence is piling in. Link(sea shells dissolving.)

Obama could help here, by pushing. Link(New Scientist editorial

If we carry on as we are, global temperatures could rise by more than 2 °C - the "dangerous level" of warming to be avoided at all costs - before expected. Given what we have seen so far, the potential impact, in terms of storms, floods and heatwaves, is frightening.

What's needed is very clear: emissions cuts, and soon. The best way to do that is to change our economic systems to reflect the true long-term cost of fossil fuels. That means ending the $1 trillion of annual subsidies for fossil fuels and imposing carbon taxes instead.

With four more years in office and no need to worry about re-election, Obama should make good on the climate promises he made in 2008. "Now is the time to confront this challenge once and for all," he said back then, when anything seemed possible. "Delay is no longer an option."

The policies he promised - to cut CO2 emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 and invest $150 billion in renewable energy technologies - are probably no longer sufficient, but the sentiment is still the right one. Like George W. Bush after his narrow re-election in 2004, Obama has renewed political capital. Unlike Bush, he should spend it wisely.

But at least it goes. The Fiskar wasn't even able to make it around Consumer Reports' test track.

The best of the electric vehicles is probably the Nissan Leaf. But there's a good chance that green automobiles will take a different path from battery powered electric. Liquid nitrogen has no particular energy content, but it has a lot of entropy content and that's what counts. Drawing energy from ambient air, which is possible because it's so cold, it can drive a motor. Thinking of liquid nitrogen as a battery is apt. The primary energy source, the one needed to get the N2 to liquid form in the first place, should be wind/solar/nuclear electricity. Or there's hydrogen fuel cells.

267 Shiplord Kirel  Tue, Nov 27, 2012 9:42:14am

Then there was this:

Ford Nucleon

The Ford Nucleon was a scale model concept car developed by Ford Motor Company in 1958 as a design on how a nuclear-powered car might look. The design did not include an internal-combustion engine, rather, the vehicle was to be powered by a small nuclear reactor in the rear of the vehicle, based on the assumption that this would one day be possible based on shrinking sizes.

Iirc, Ford also designed a nuclear powered tank. The mockup looked like a Sherman with a lengthened engine deck. Even in those nuke-crazed days, the Army wasn't interested for some reason.

Ricks mocks Fox, which cuts and runs
Posted By Thomas E. Ricks

Maybe I am getting cranky as I go into my third week of book tour. I was on Fox News yesterday morning and said (as I had indicated beforehand that I would) that the whole Benghazi story has been hyped. The anchor pushed back, so I defended my position. My view -- that Fox is openly supportive of the Republican Party, and that the Benghazi incident was hyped in part because it occurred near the end of the presidential campaign -- induced heart flutters in some quarters.

Continues.

Appreciate the info. Walmart, at least to me, is still a relatively new phenomenon in the South Jersey area. I think we've had them 15 years, tops, if that.

Defeated candidate Brad Staats arrested on domestic assault charge

Less than three weeks after he lost a bid to represent Nashville in Congress, Republican nominee Brad Staats was arrested on a domestic assault charge after allegedly slapping his wife, Bethany.

A police affidavit said officers were dispatched to the couple’s Hermitage home Sunday after receiving a call from Bethany Staats, who said her husband had slapped her in the face.
[...]
Staats, 43, said in interviews before the election that he was worried about the nation’s direction and the impact it could have on his four children. He raised eyebrows in late September with a Facebook post in which he showed a photo of his handgun and wrote, “Welcome to Tennessee Mr. Obama.”

RINO Hunters Fire Warning Shots At Republican Senate Candidates

“Congresswoman Capito has a long record of support of bailouts, pork, and bigger government,” Club For Growth president Chris Chocola wrote in a press release. “She voted to bail out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, for massive expansions of government-run health insurance, giveaways to big labor, and repeatedly voted to continue funding for wasteful earmarks like an Exploratorium in San Francisco and an Aquarium in South Carolina. That’s not the formula for GOP success in U.S. Senate races.”

Chocola made clear that he would ignore Republican whining about his previous primary interventions in states like like Indiana, where Club-backed Richard Mourdock defeated incumbent Sen. Dick Lugar (R-IN) only to collapse in the general election. He noted that more mainstream candidates “the Republican establishment cheered” like Denny Rehberg in Montana, Rick Berg in North Dakota, and Heather Wilson in New Mexico, also lost in 2012.

The same day, Jim DeMint’s Senate Conservatives Fund announced it wouldn’t endorse the “too liberal” Capito. DeMint threw his weight behind a number of candidates in the 2010 primaries that made national GOP strategists uncomfortable. While some, like Marco Rubio and Rand Paul, ended up becoming stars, others, like Christine O’Donnell, were embarrassing losers who helped tarnish the party’s national brand.

re: #292 TedStriker

In Fischer's assessment, such a move would be tantamount to political suicide for the GOP because, contrary to popular opinion, those who classify themselves as "independents" are not moderates, but rather hard-line conservatives who refuse to consider themselves Republicans because the party is not conservative enough ... and so the only way to win over "independents," especially white voters who are "naturally" a part of the Republican base, is for the GOP to become more conservative on all the issues:

296 Feline Fearless Leader  Tue, Nov 27, 2012 11:04:14am

re: #295 Kragar

I suspect the membership bucket labeled "GOP" would leak voters as much as it would gain them (if not moreso) if said bucket was made more conservative. Also, at some point, I suspect that the business class support of the party might start to waver if it goes further and further down the social legislation rabbit hole.

Fischer: The Way to Win Over Independents is for the GOP to Become More Conservative

Sure, go for it.

That's kind of true. Of course, the true reality is that a growing number of independents are people who think the GOP isn't right wing enough. In the past, there could be said to be a correlation between self described moderate voters and independent voters but that was not the case in the past election. Obama beat Romney overwhelmingly with voters who describe themselves as moderates. Really, the GOP can hang themselves politically for all I care but going more to the right isn't a winning strategy at all.
