Mitt Romney’s Strategist: We’d Have Won, Except for That Pesky 47%

Plus, black
Politics • Views: 28,345

Stuart Stevens was the Big Kahuna for the Mitt Romney campaign, and his opinion piece today in the Washington Post is a fitting epitaph, demonstrating again the absolutely tone deaf nature of Romney’s pitch: Mitt Romney: A Good Man. the Right Fight.

Stevens is mainly concerned with shoring up his reputation, as the guy who lost. But the most telling part of the column is when he casually dismisses as unimportant all the voters who make less than $50,000 a year.

On Nov. 6, Romney carried the majority of every economic group except those with less than $50,000 a year in household income. That means he carried the majority of middle-class voters. While John McCain lost white voters younger than 30 by 10 points, Romney won those voters by seven points, a 17-point shift. Obama received 4½ million fewer voters in 2012 than 2008, and Romney got more votes than McCain.

I’m pretty sure there are quite a few Americans who make $50K a year and still consider themselves “middle class,” but even apart from that, Stevens is basically reiterating the infamous Romney “47%” line, and brushing off half the nation.

Oh… and of course, it wouldn’t be a right wing apologia if he didn’t infer that Obama won because he’s black.

There was a time not so long ago when the problems of the Democratic Party revolved around being too liberal and too dependent on minorities. Obama turned those problems into advantages and rode that strategy to victory. But he was a charismatic African American president with a billion dollars, no primary and media that often felt morally conflicted about being critical. How easy is that to replicate?

Boo fucking hoo Stevens. Just because your party and candidate are the candidate de jour of angry old white people doesn't mean you have the right to be a dog whistling douchenozzle.

Didn't Mitt Romney finish with 47% of the vote? Yes, as a matter of fact he did. That's called poetic justice.

Just a refresher, in case the name Stuart Stevens sounded familiar:

Overseas, Stevens worked for successfully for two candidates in 2005 and 2006. In Albania he worked for Prime Minister Sali Berisha during the 2005 election campaign, where he based the campaign primarily on "a pledge to reduce corruption"[9]. He also worked for 2006 election campaign of Joseph Kabila in the Democratic Republic of Congo[9].

Stuart Stevens: International douchecanoe.

Yeah, how will the democrats replicate the fact that half the people in the US make less than the median income, which coincidentally is $50000.

Which is why Obama won the wealthiest states while Romney won the poorest states? Let's face it. Romney won the hillbilly vote.

When Stuart pointed out how much better Romney did with certain groups than John McCain did, he failed to mention that the votes he gained in some circles amounted to a zero sum game for Romney. The GOP message of hate that attracted some voters repelled an equal number of others.

Obviously, if the democrats can only win with households making below $50k, the GOP should redistribute as much money down as possible to raise more people above that level and start winning elections again.

Oh, right... The GOP only redistributes money up.

Yeah but that go against Stevens and Romney's meme that the freeloaders favor Obama. It's total nonsense of course. In fact, Obama won my county, the wealthiest county in the state of Virginia and among the wealthiest nation wide by actually a higher margin than he did state wide but of course if you listen to Stevens, it was those damn liberals and minorities.

Romney lost the fucking Cuban American vote. If that's not evidence of how Republicans continue to shit their load with minority voters, then I don't know what is. Probably had a small part to do with Romney insulting their intelligence by having an ad comparing President Obama to the Castro regime. Or maybe it was hiring Kobach and saying he wanted to have a policy where people would "self-deport." But hey nothing is ever Mitt Romney's fault ever. It's always someone else.

GOP Senator’s Crazy Reasoning: Raising Taxes On The Rich Would Hit The Poor ‘The Hardest’

Cloaking his predilection for the rich as concern for the less fortunate, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) argued Wednesday that raising taxes on the wealthy would primarily hurt the poor. Lee’s comments came on former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee’s (R) radio show as the two discussed the looming fiscal showdown in Congress.

“The reason we worry about raising taxes on anyone – even raising taxes on the rich,” Lee argued, is “that will hit the poorest among us the hardest.” Lest listeners get the wrong idea, the Utah Senator insisted, “it’s not that we’re looking out for the rich.”
...
This prospect, frequently repeated by conservatives, that raising taxes on the wealthy will decimate the economy and destroy job creation (and thus hurt the poor) is simply not supported by empirical evidence. As these three graphs show, the nation’s best GDP growth and job creation rate in the last 60 years actually occurred when the top marginal income tax rate was between 75 and 80 percent. The worst period for both measurements occurred when the top rate was 35 percent, as it stands today. In fact, job growth and gross domestic product has little, if any, correlation to the tax rate on wealthy Americans.

What I find so strange is that on the rwnj site I look at, pj, they're taking their antipsychotics or drinking themselves into a stupor and slowly backing down on everything they've said for the last 4 years about the debt. They're pretty much facing that fact that the bat-shit-crazy Bircher wing that they represent has lost.

It's odd watching them be listless after 4 years of florid insanity. It's like it was all bluster, even if they sounded like dangerous kk nuts on a lynching party.

I mean they're not all better, but the difference is surprising. You don't realize how little of the the craziness these guys really believe until you see them facing the fact that they were never the majority.

I mean they still say stupid things. Rick Moran wrote an article saying that Obamacare will instantly instantly instantly (in less than 2 years) cause a recession and then Republicans will then jump in and take over congress forever. Which is odd, because if you read his blog, you'd have thought he was one of the few sane people at pj. But even his audience isn't buying the bullshit.

Apparently you don't always get what you pay for:

"According to an analysis by the Times Data Desk, part of the Los Angeles Times, the Obama campaign had 901 people on its payroll last month, and paid them a median salary of $3,074 a month, or $36,886 a year.

The Romney campaign, in contrast, had 403 people on its payroll, and paid them a median salary of $6,437 in August, which would mean $77,250 a year.

A Romney campaign official said the median staff salary is actually $51,500 a year. The August payroll may have been inflated by back pay owed to new employees, the official said.

So, the “businessman” Romney pays fewer people more money than the “socialist” Obama."

[Link: articles.latimes.com...]

Someone on the intertubes claimed that the Romney campaign tab was a ratio of 134:6 compared to the Obama team. Can't find it now.

He thinks Romney won the primary because voters liked him.

Nobody liked Romney except voters. What began in a small field in New Hampshire grew into a national movement. It wasn’t our campaign, it was Romney. He bested the competition in debates, and though he was behind almost every candidate in the GOP primary at one time or the other, he won the nomination and came very close to winning the presidency.

He won the primary because: Santorum, Cain, Perry, Bachmann, Gingrich, etc.

For His Next Trick, Glenn Beck Will Put Mapplethorpe’s Bullwhip Right There In His Butt

Damn, but that Glenn Beck is CLEVER. He sure showed us! In fact, we are in a rage! All of us! Every librul on the planet is mad mad mad. And, by “every librul” we mean “a few random anonymous people on twitter.” Listen, we don’t get it either. There’s no good reason that Fox or Beck or anyone should still be yelling at clouds over some nominally shocking art from 25 years ago. And Beck didn’t even have the decency to be for-real shocking and go all GG Allin and use his own urine or Mr. Serrano’s urine or anyone else’s urine. Beck appears to have used Dos Equis Beer. Yr Wonkette would seriously consider drinking a mason jar of bobblehead-filled urine or going on a date with GG Allin before downing 32 ounces of Dos Equis.

This fixation is just weird. To be fair, it isn’t, say, Andrew Shirvell stalker level of weird. Not even “I Will Always Love You” or “Every Breath You Take” level of creepy. Just more like that sad guy you went out with once in college and you heard a Gin Blossoms song on the radio and then he made you like ten mixtapes with “Hey Jealousy” on it until you graduated. After the Crack-Up
By Lee Habeeb & Mike Leven

It’s been weeks since our “surprise” loss on November 6. The conservative crack-up began in real time, as we watched Karl Rove, à la Captain Queeg, insist that his employer, Fox News, was calling Ohio, and the election, for President Obama prematurely.

Then came the fingerpointing, and the conjecture. Our pundits covered every scenario. We were too conservative. We weren’t conservative enough. The social issues killed us. We didn’t hit the social issues hard enough. We had a candidate problem. A woman problem. A Hispanic problem. It will continue for months, this self-abuse masquerading as self-examination. And liberals will eat it up, watching us wallow in self-doubt.

But if there is one thing conservatives can agree on post-election, it’s this: The dominance of the Left in the storytelling arena is making a difference at the polls. It’s impossible to measure, but anyone who doesn’t think it skews outcomes is living in an alternative universe.

Moran says "Obamacare will cause a recession (lolwhat?) and that will be the end of the Democratic party". Careful with this stuff, if you fall down laughing you may hurt yourself or pull a muscle.

Bryan Preston says that Obama will force the fiscal cliff to intentionally cause a recession that he can blame on the Republicans.

I'm not really sure we should be buying the "automatic spending cuts and tax raises will cause a recession" line. It bugs me that the news never questions it. If the claim is that raising taxes always causes a recession, well then we've just bought voodoo economics and the tea party has won. Why are we suddenly buying that line now?

Ok half of it is spending cuts, but wasn't what congress was going to do cut spending and raise taxes?

That's a pretty strong statement. I don't remember Code Pink dictating national Democratic policy, which feels like the rough equivalent of where we are now.

I wasn't trying to show extreme examples. I was thinking how Clinton reformed and changed the Dems to beat a sitting president with a 80% approval during the Gulf war 1. How Bush had the big Tent Policy. An all inclusion Platform that worked that year.
I leave off any fringe groups like code pink. But damn you are right.. The GOP is doubling down on the craziness.

Oops big typo said the opposite of what I meant.

Rick Moran actually said that Obamacare will cause a recession [lolwhat?] and that will be the end of the Democratic party.

How fucking stupid do you have to be to think that health insurance causes recessions? Or that you could even sell that line?

A National Review article?

You’d think our wealthiest conservatives would want to mimic that accomplishment in other areas of our culture. Why not create an alternative to NPR? It reaches 33 million people with its feigned neutrality. Or The Daily Show? Ridicule is a powerful weapon, and the Left offers Americans much to laugh about.

We aren’t just throwing money down the drain on commercials. We’re funding the Left’s storytelling and programming machine. And we’re the smart guys?

...

Why haven’t we developed studios or messaging tanks that support our worldview?

Yeah, like that's what the world needs.

I waded through years of Lamar Smith's opinion pieces, blogs, statements to get an idea of what he has said before about his new role as Chair of the House Science Committee. There are 2 basic points he makes over and over again. 1) Regulations kill businesses. What kind of regulations you ask? All of them. They are all bad. and 2) The Space Industry is a job creator for Texas.

That sums up about 2/3 of what he writes about.

Maybe a set of rooms is entitled to use an apostrophe in "it's" even when a possessive was intended.

I think the 47% remark was just the tip of the iceberg really. I think the statement confirmed what a lot of people thought about Mitt Romney and then he did little to change that. Empathy? Some can fake it with great skill. Mitt won't even try to fake empathy.

The Romney IT department is working on an empathy subroutine for the Taggbot to be launched in time for the 2020 campaign.

RWNJs still haven't learned a goddamned thing from this election.

Here's a hint, RWNJs: Your "message" got out loud-and-clear, despite the "librul media" (which, in and of itself, is a fictional construct these days, but I digress). However, your "message" stinks on ice and voters clued in on it, especially in the closing weeks and days of the campaign; Romney's comments about abolishing/crippling FEMA stood in stark contrast to the federal response to Hurricane Sandy spearheaded by President Obama and his FEMA chief right before the election.

People pay attention to stuff like that.

Habeeb produced the video "Is Nationalized Health Care a Death Snare?" about the effects a government takeover of health care would have on both beginning of life and end of life issues.

DEATH PANELS!!!!1!

Habeeb was also instrumental in helping some prominent Atlanta doctors create and promote Docs4PatientCare and has worked closely with the promotion of the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC), which promotes itself as a conservative alternative to the AARP.

So what is the great GOP story, and how does it relate to actual policy? Lets consider spending as a specific example.

GOP fiscal restraint in practice = spend like drunken sailors when they are in power (Bush), and use spending cuts only as a weapon against a Democratic president (both Obama and Clinton).

What kind of story can spin that pile of crap? The greatest story tellers that ever lived couldn't put lipstick on that pig.

The GOP response to this has been to deny the facts as they stand. Outside the Fox/Rush bubble, this is known as lying.

Bolding
mine.

No amount of storytelling is going to fix your party's endemic bigotry.

It's not just about gays either. Think about your best friend, who somehow convinced you that minority turnout was going to be down this year. You've been repeatedly asked to tell us what his reasoning was, but you steadfastly refuse. This leaves people with the impression that it wasn't so much reasoning as wishful thinking.

The fact that you, your best friend, and your party were all openly hoping and predicting that minorities wouldn't be participating so much in our democracy this year was somehow worth relating, without acknowledging the racial animus that such a hope betrayed.

This is kind of funny.

AMAC’s Values:

AMAC’s values are based on the same Judeo-Christian Values that our Nation is founded on. AMAC believes in religious freedom and tolerance. We welcome members of all faiths as well as agnostics and atheists. Patriotic Citizens of America must unite!

As a 60 yr old white guy on disability I must be one of the "underclass minorities" that helped Obama win, Hell anytime the Republicans want to raise my disability pay from 12K a year to 100k a year I may think of voting for them ( but that's not a promise).

itt Romney: "I'll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

He'll also never convince me that being born into a rich and powerful family was not instrumental in giving him a huge free boost up that most people never get. Being a non-humble, total asshole of a man, Willard just can't ever admit that.

Romney convincingly won the white male, Christian heterosexual, private sector employer vote, so it's really a victory for all truly patriotic Americans.
