How to Totally Enrage Wingnut World: Al Gore for Secretary of State

If we can’t have Susan Rice, how about someone they *really* hate?
Politics • Views: 22,721

How to spin the wingnuts up into frenzied, frothing paroxysms of total rage, and have a well-qualified Secretary of State at the same time: Al Gore for Secretary of State!

I first heard this suggestion from my friend David Greenberg, the historian who writes for Slate, and I thought, nahhh. But it grew on me pretty fast. Tell me why not. He’d be great. He’s known around the world. He’s respected around the world, about 90 percent of which surely wishes he’d been the president instead of the guy he beat. I’m not saying he’d change the world; no one can do that. But he’d get a hearing everywhere. He knows a huge number of world leaders, and he knows the issues cold. He could dive right into the pool’s deepest end, in the Middle East, on Iran, you name it.

What about his climate-change crusade, you wonder? Far from having to drop his signature issue, Gore could use his new position to push it with even greater vigor in a global context. Gore, and probably Gore alone, would be capable of elevating the climate change issue to the position it deserves on the national and global stage.

What we don’t know that much about is the Gore-Obama relationship. In 2007 and 2008, Gore clearly tilted toward Obama (Gore’s mere refusal to endorse Hillary Clinton over Obama indicated as much). Gore didn’t endorse Obama until right after he’d secured the nomination, but the two were said to have talked regularly. That’s good enough.

Finally: Man, would I love to see the Republicans try to swat down a Gore nomination. How? They’d poke around in his finances, remind America that he’s now divorced. But unless there were some kind of smoking gun on the former point, no one would care. They could not really block Gore; too much stature, too obviously qualified. Can you imagine? John McCain would grind his teeth, assuming those still are his teeth, down to dust. That would be awesome to watch.

Gore would be an excellent choice on so many levels but most especially as a signal that the US is finally taking AGW seriously. Sec. of State would be an ideal platform.

The whole RWNJ head asploding thing would just be gravy.

Ah, I miss the days when the mere mention of Al Gore's name at LGF would kick off several hundred comments insulting everything about him and mocking the science of global warming.

Actually, no I don't. I don't miss those days at all.

Cue conspiracy that McCain is getting back at the GOP for foisting Palin on him. He rails insanely against the never-stated Rice nomination to lay the groundwork for Gore to be nominated as a "compromise".

Speaking of that, I can't remember the last time I heard about a president inviting his defeated opponent to the WH? Maybe my memory's hazy but I don't remember Clinton or Bush inviting either of theirs. And I'm too young to even remember what H.W Bush's first year in office.

For Sen. Rand Paul, Elections Do Not Have Consequences

Paul went on to claim that since Republicans only lost 52%-48% in the last election, they didn't really get "creamed," so there is no reason for them to have to compromise. Instead they simply need to come up with an alternative solution to the crisis that doesn't involve any tax increases at all and "show the American people we are willing to avert the so-called cliff, but this is how we would fix the country if we were in charge, because we are in charge of the United States House of Representatives. You elected us to be in charge; let's act like we're in charge."

The only problem with that, Paul explained, was that any such plan would have to go through the House Republican leadership, which would be quite difficult since, as Beck proclaimed, that means it has to go through Boehner "and he sucks":

That was an unfortuate side effect of him championing the cause. A lot of people went from simply ignoring it or dismissing it to actively opposing it, simply because he was behind it.

I think Rand Paul's an even bigger idiot than his father. Hey idiot, if Romney had won by the margin Obama did, you and yours would be claiming this was a huge mandate for your guy. Get over it crybaby and cry into some of your father's money he got from idiots who actually think he would make a good president.

Yeah, he was the face of the cause which is why with all respect to him, I wish someone else had been the face of it. But on the other hand, you have to fight what what you think is right and Vice President Gore obviously thought this was the right cause for him to fight for.

Chuck Hagel being vetted for national security post

Former Nebraska Republican Senator Chuck Hagel is being vetted for a possible top national security post in the Obama administration, multiple sources told The Cable.

Hagel, who co-chairs President Barack Obama's Intelligence Advisory Board, which provides independent advice on the effectiveness of the intelligence community, could be in contention for either secretary of state or secretary of defense, people familiar with the vetting process say.

It was a bit presumptuous of him to think that he could simply remove himself from politics and place himself above politics to champion the cause as some sort of neutral elder statesman figure: a transtition like that usually takes at least a decade.

One one hand, it made AGW a household word, but on the down side it had the effect of polarizing people against it based on his political background.

Religious Right Groups Work to Defeat Treaty on Rights of People with Disabilities, Falsely Claim it Sanctions Abortion

Perkins’s claim that the treaty “could force America to sanction sterilization or abortion for the disabled-at taxpayer expense” is simply false.

The State Department makes clear that the treaty “does not include abortion” and the phrase “reproductive health” in Article 25 “does not create any abortion rights, and cannot be interpreted to constitute support, endorsement, or promotion of abortion.”
...
Even the National Right to Life Committee reported after the text was adopted that no delegate interpreted “reproductive health” to mean abortion and that “delegates from pro-life nations ultimately accepted this language.” “The committee responsible for enforcing compliance to this treaty would be going way beyond their mandate if they were to interpret the term ‘reproductive health’ to include abortion,” the NRLC said:
...
But for the Religious Right, even definitive evidence that the treaty’s language does not refer to abortion doesn’t change their mind that the Convention on the Right of Persons with Disabilities must be defeated.

It is an article of faith that Obama wants to surrender US soveriegnity to the UN any way he can, be through AGW, Law of the Sea, or any other sort of international treaty.

There is no convincing them otherwise, no matter how these treaties are worded.

Elections have consequences - and an opportunity to sidestep the Norquist pledge. Courtesy of GOPer Chris Gibson (NY-19), we get the justification to no longer follow the pledge because that was made to his constituents while part of NY-20. Redistricting allows him the opportunity to no longer heed the pledge.

Mr. Gibson saw his district number change from 20 to 19 during this year’s redistricting process and he reasoned that the pledge no longer applies to him as it was only to the constituents under the previous district number.

“The Congressman signed the pledge as a candidate in 2010 for the 20th Congressional District,” his spokeswoman explained. “Regarding the pledge moving forward, Congressman Gibson doesn’t plan to re-sign it for the 19th Congressional District, which he now represents (the pledge is to your constituents of a numbered district).”

Harry Reid hits the nail squarely on its head.

Insults fly as bogged-down fiscal talks spark familiar disputes

Washington (CNN) -- After two years of endless debate and a national election, Democrats and Republicans on Thursday found themselves right where they started -- blaming each other for stagnant negotiations on taxes and government spending.

House Speaker John Boehner declared himself disappointed that "no substantive progress" has occurred in two weeks of talks, saying Republicans were waiting for the White House to propose significant spending cuts.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid responded to Boehner by telling reporters: "I don't understand his brain."

You and me both, Mr. Reid.

Dear Speaker of the House,

If you consult the US Constitution you may discover that the body of government responsible for the laws regarding government spending resides in the US Capitol and not the White House.

Whether or not the POTUS makes spending proposals is not the deciding factor in the legislation. He may veto what you eventually produce, but for now the ball is in your court and a 10-second violation is close at hand.

Stevie Wonder to pull out of IDF fundraiser

Stevie Wonder is set to pull out of a performance at a fundraiser for the Israel Defense Forces, a source told JTA.

Wonder's representatives will claim that he did not know the nature of the group, the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, and that he believes such a performance would be incongruent with his status as a UN "Messenger of Peace," according to a source who has read email exchanges between Wonder's representatives and organizers of the event.
....
Wonder had come under intense social media pressure to pull out of the event. An online petition calling on him to cancel his performance had garnered more than 3,600 signatures.

The petition was launched more than a day ago on the change.org website.

"You were arrested in 1985 protesting South African Apartheid, now we ask you: please remember that apartheid is apartheid, whether it comes from White Afrikaaner settlers of South Africa or from Jewish Israelis in Israel," the petition reads. "Desmond Tutu has recognized that Israel’s Apartheid is worse than South Africa’s -- will you stand with us against apartheid and cancel your performance at the IDF fundraiser."

A second petition, launched by the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, calls on Wonder to "(p)lease continue your legacy of speaking out for the oppressed. Please be a 'full-time lover' of justice by standing on the right side of history and canceling your performance for the Israeli army."

Okay ,,, we humans are REALLY getting lazy now

Drive thru restaurants
Drive thru liquor stores
Drive thru pharmacies
Drive thru banks

Now this

Zurich to open drive-in sex boxes

[Link: www.telegraph.co.uk...]

the row of garage-like boxes will have roofs and walls for privacy, and easy access for cars. The council estimates that around 30 prostitutes will meet clients at the site of the boxes, and use the drive-in slots on a first-come-first-served basis.

Congressman Torn Between Meaningless Pledge To Anti-Tax Zealot, Well-Being Of Nation

Amid ongoing negotiations in Congress over the looming “fiscal cliff,” Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY) told reporters Wednesday he is “completely torn” between his commitment to conservative activist Grover Norquist’s meaningless anti-tax pledge and the general welfare of the entire country. “On the one hand, you have a nonsensical promise to blindly oppose tax increases regardless of circumstances, but on the other, you have the well-being of more than 300 million people and the long-term stability of the entire U.S. economy,” said Reed, adding that he is “really stuck between a rock and a hard place” now that he must decide between his loyalty to a dogmatic political lobbyist and his responsibility to serve the best interests of his constituents. “At the end of the day, it’s a question of whether a nonbinding signature on an outdated and worthless pledge written 26 years ago is more important than preventing the nation from completely going to hell. I just don’t know what to do here.” When reached for comment, Norquist urged the pledge’s signatories in Congress to “remember what’s really important” before sacrificing utterly irrational principles for the sake of the country’s future.

Jon Huntsman would be awesome LOL. He probably hasn't given up on running for POTUS in 2016 though, so he couldn't accept the job. Dick Lugar is too old probably, but his foreign policy knowledge can't be argued. Hagel would be another good choice.

Either of the three would be better and funnier than a Gore nomination. I've always found Gore to be kinda dull. I didn't vote for Bush or Gore in 2000 because I thought both were dim bulbs.

Recipe: Benghanzi Rice Gore

2 lb False Outrage
1 c Bluster
2 c Hypocrisy
2 tbsp Denial

Mix together Outrage and Bluster and saute' in a high heat Press Conference until softened. Stir in Hypocrisy and Denial, shape into loaf and put in a Crucible of Moral Conviction. Sprinkle with freshly harvested wingnut tears and let fester until impeachment is complete or FOXNews loses interest in flogging the dish.

;)

I think Lugar would be considered if he hadn't turned 80 in April. I really like and respect him. Same thing with Hagel. Respect Huntsman too even if he grates at my nerves sometimes.

A good SoS is allowed to be dull though. Not so much for POTUS, though a stolid, "let's get it done" type who can get firey when necessary like Truman are good to have.

Fox News analyst panics over same sex marriage licenses: ‘What will happen to heterosexual marriage?’

At a hearing on Wednesday, officials with the Washington State Department of Health said that soon after the law legalizing same sex marriages goes into effect on Dec. 6, marriage certificates would begin using the terms “Spouse A” and “Spouse B” instead of bride and groom.

“This is a sea change,” Johnson told Fox News host Steve Doocy on Thursday. “This is a big anthropological change. This will change society in Washington and other states forever.”

“The issue becomes, in terms of gender neutrality, in terms of saying ‘I’m a spouse, I’m not a husband or wife, I’m not a bride or groom, I’m someone about to be married’ — where does it go?” the legal analyst asked. “Do we no longer say father and mother? Do we only say parent? Do we no longer say brother and sister? Do we say sibling? Do we no longer say widow or widower? What does it mean in terms of our relationships and how we view each other, people who choose to be engaged in heterosexual marriage?”

“So you think what is happening in Washington state with this proposal is going to wind up rippling across the fabric if America?” Doocy wondered.

“It will!” Johnson warned. “And it’s not about gay marriage, it’s about what will happen to heterosexual marriage and how those partners are defined and how those relationships go forward in our society.”

“It’s going to have a tremendous, tremendous impact,” he added. “Watch this, see what happens. This is going to be a big, big, sea change in our society and how the smallest of our children understand relationships between parents, between husband and wife, between mother and father.”

I don't know. Ask Canada and the other places that have legalized gay marriage and shocker men and women still get married and raise happy families in. A bunch of scared morons is what one could call Fox's target audience.

Which is basically symbolic. But everyone will flip out. And being symbolic, is pretty pointless on the part of the UN.

Also-- so who runs this state? You've got Gaza and the West Bank, and they have a bit of political distance.

re: #88 Charles Johnson

I do wonder what this gets the Palestinian Authority. International recognition, but does not this also get them a great deal of additional responsibility regarding actions originating in their territory? Once you are a recognized country and such a cause belli such as launching rockets into a neighboring country's territory is grounds for them to declare war, invade, and grind you into dust.

Or potentially get UN peacekeepers attempting to keep a border under control. And given the mess the ME is now I expect that would fail miserably fairly quickly as well.

I have some reservations yet I am happy for the Palestinian people. There is much work to be done but this stands as a good foothold for an eventual 2 state solution and an end to a status that is unsustainable in its present form.

We all know how well government forms create reality. There must surely be a form somewhere that refers to Romney as a "taxpayer", therefore he must have properly paid his taxes.

You might have to change that to three states if Hamas and Fatah stay at each other throats.

"Spouse B"? Discrimination! It should be "Spouse A" and "Spouse 1".
