Conservative Fact Check Fires Pamela Geller’s ‘TechDude’

Discovers that he forged his credentials. Still apparently not clear on much else.
Blogosphere • Views: 49,123

Conservative Fact Check, the fact-checking site that’s probably not a parody, has parted ways with Pamela Geller’s “TechDude,” who came up with the nonsensical “heat map” theory behind the obviously forged birth certificate of Kenyan Usurper Barack Shabazz Hussein Obama:

I should point out that I have not met “TechDude” in person. He contacted me via email shortly after this site was launched, and pointed me to his work featured on the Atlas Shrugs blog. I was impressed, and offered him the (unpaid) position as our resident technical expert.

When I confronted him with the information about the plagiarized credentials, he first claimed not to be the same “TechDude” who had forged those credentials. But then I pointed him toward his emails in which he claimed to be the same “TechDude” who had helped Atlas Shruggs with their Obama forged birth certificate investigation, in which Pamela Gellar listed those same credentials.

So is it the same “TechDude”? I don’t know. But I don’t think that he’s exhibited adequate honesty.

To be clear, I don’t doubt for a second that Obama’s birth certificate is a forgery — many other people, including Mr. Donald Trump, have said the same thing, so the evidence is overwhelming. But given this revelation, it’s best if “TechDude” and CFC part ways.

Read all about it.

How did they know his credentials were forged? Did they put them under the heat lamp down at McDonald's? You know, you still need to throw those credentials out if they aren't used after 20 minutes under the lamp.

I don’t think that he’s exhibited adequate honesty.

Um, coming from a site (probably) dedicated to disseminating dishonest information I'll have to rate this as the most disingenuous statement I've read all week.

3 philosophus invidius  Sat, Dec 1, 2012 9:37:39am

Some interesting facts about Techdude:

1) He was associated with a "PUMA" blog, which attacked Obama supposedly in support of Hilary Clinton. But the blog (called texasdarlin) is transparently a wingnut Republican site (like "Hilaryis44") designed to sow doubts about the legitimacy of Obama's primary victory and birth certificate under the false guise of supporting Hilary as the legitimate Democratic nominee.
2) Techdude was completely discredited within the Birther community--as strange as that sounds--some time in late 2008. The forgery of his credentials was discovered, and his analyses were recognized as bogus. After that became known, he quietly disappeared. No one believed him or his claims that someone put a mutilated rabbit on his door.
3) After all of that, all mention of him was purged from the texasdarlin site.
4) Pamela Gellar hosted his "analyses" and claimed to have verified his credentials. As far as I can tell, after Techdude was rejected by the Birther movement, Pamela just moved on and neither defended or repudiated his "analyses." In that regard, CFC is actually being more responsible than Gellar was.
5) I can't see that techdude actually contributed in any way to the CFC website, aside from appearing on the "About" page.

"We can't blame the Tea Party for spreading these. As mentioned, many of them are politically and mathematically unsophisticated, but they make up for that with enthusiasm, and that's what counts."

I LOLed at that. If the site is satire, it's damn brilliant.

The future of factchecking

Outlets must also learn to overcome the controversies and frictions that factchecking inevitably creates, which tend to help keep the status quo in place. At the elite level, for instance, the increased salience of factchecking during this electoral cycle generated unprecedented pushback, ranging from an 86-page dossier on Politifact Virginia released by the state GOP to repeated on-air attacks on PolitiFact by MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow. Some of these complaints had merit—like other journalists, factcheckers sometimes make mistakes and demonstrate poor judgment—but the criticisms often appear driven in part by partisan or ideological considerations.

Media outlets will also have to learn how to tolerate objections from their audience. Most people like the idea of challenging talking points and factchecking in the abstract, but protest when their side gets criticized—a factor that unfortunately creates commercial incentives to avoid aggressive factchecking.

Given the energy and enthusiasm behind the factchecking movement, it is likely that these challenges can be at least partially overcome.

I'm not so sure it isn't a parody site..

How about some snips from the article Feder's "Rules for Conservatives".

5. Don’t let the Republican establishment pick our candidates. Every time that’s happened, without exception, we go down to ignominious defeat — Ford in 1976, G.W. Bush in 1992, Dole in 1996, McCain in 2008 and Mitt the Meek in 2012. Avoid Republicans who’ve made a reputation for reaching across the aisle. They are adept at negotiated surrender. Voters hunger not for bi-partisanship but moral clarity. Unite early behind the best authentic conservative candidate. Don’t wait for another Regan, while the establishment slips in another Romney.,,

9. Don’t engage in racial/ethnic/gender appeals. At the 2012 GOP Nominating Convention, speakers fell all over themselves expressing their gratitude for the women in their lives (mothers/wives/daughters/female colleagues/cleaning ladies) to convince single women that Republicans weren’t misogynists who wanted to snatch their contraceptives. (Obama still got the votes of two-thirds of a constituency whose political compass lies between their legs.)

11. Don’t be intimidated by charges of racism, sexism and xenophobia, which the establishment uses to silence dissent. Answer accusations with demands for explanations. How does holding minorities to the same standards as whites constitute racism? How is a recognition of reality (men and women are different, psychology as well as biologically) sexist? Why should racial hustlers or embittered militants be allowed to establish the parameters of legitimate debate?

MOAR please!

Most of the partisan complaints about the fact checkers didn't impress me very much. The article talks about possibility of CNN adopting more of a fact checking model but I think they're soon changing to a more entertainment/reality show format so I don't think that's likely.
