Rep. Huizenga Hopes Obama won't 'Misinterpret' the Election as an Endorsement of his Policies

Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-MI) told Tony Perkins last week on Washington Watch Weekly that President Obama and the House GOP may not come to a tax deal before the fiscal deadline because he fears that the Obama administration “is going to misinterpret this past election and say, ‘well we campaign on increasing tax rates, not just revenues but increasing tax rates, and maintaining our spending.’” Indeed, Obama did make raising taxes on high earners a top campaign priority and both post-election polls and exit polls found that 60 percent of support raising taxes on income over $250,000. But apparently, Huizenga believes that House Republicans, who actually received fewer votes than Democratic House candidates, get to decide for Obama how to interpret his victory.

In keeping with the WND tradition of promoting various fringe conspiracies, Santorum’s debut column claimed that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has an objective of “ceding our sovereignty to the United Nations.”

Santorum warned that a United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities treaty adopted in 2006 “has much darker and more troubling implications” than to simply improve the treatment of disabled people in other countries.

The staunchly anti-abortion Republican worried that the treaty would “put the government, acting under U.N. authority, in the position to determine for all children with disabilities what is best for them.”

And taking that thought to its absurd conclusion, Santorum suggested that the U.N. treaty would have meant the death of his daughter, who has a rare genetic disorder.

I tried, but couldn't get past the part where the great underground sea exploded out, causing the great flood, shooting water and organic materials into space, forming comets and being responsible for ice being found elsewhere in the solar system, and that it happened 4000 years ago.

There is nothing in this language which intimates that treaties and laws enacted pursuant to them do not have to comply with the provisions of the Constitution. Nor is there anything in the debates which accompanied the drafting and ratification of the Constitution which even suggests such a result. These debates as well as the history that surrounds the adoption of the treaty provision in Article VI make it clear that the reason treaties were not limited to those made in "pursuance" of the Constitution was so that agreements made by the United States under the Articles of Confederation, including the important peace treaties which concluded the Revolutionary [354 U.S. 1, 17] War, would remain in effect. 31 It would be manifestly contrary to the objectives of those who created the Constitution, as well as those who were responsible for the Bill of Rights — let alone alien to our entire constitutional history and tradition — to construe Article VI as permitting the United States to exercise power under an international agreement without observing constitutional prohibitions. 32 In effect, such construction would permit amendment of that document in a manner not sanctioned by Article V. The prohibitions of the Constitution were designed to apply to all branches of the National Government and they cannot be nullified by the Executive or by the Executive and the Senate combined.

There is nothing new or unique about what we say here. This Court has regularly and uniformly recognized the supremacy of the Constitution over a treaty.

Heritage Foundation loved the Bonus Depreciation provision in the stimulus package. That provision allowed businesses to write off 100% of new capital investment made in 2011 in one single year instead of spreading the depreciation over a number of years. It was a huge incentive to get businesses to reinvest in their operations to get things rolling again. And it led to the largest corporate profits ever in 2011.

But ask Heritage what they thought of job creation in the USA in 2011 and 2012 and they'll show a slew of charts why Obama's policies failed.

So now, what does Heritage promote? Why of course more tax breaks for businesses.

All those smart people at Heritage haven't figured out that if customers in the market don't have money to spend, then businesses can't expand and create jobs. Throwing money at a corporation does not cause them to create new jobs.

Talking about the deductions sounds great in the abstract until you start looking at the numbers involved. Everyone on both sides of the aisle consider charitable deductions to be a good thing - encouraging charitable giving. Reduce that deduction, even if limited to high income earners, would hurt charitable giving to a wide range of entities - university endowments, health care and medical research (think cancer, diabetes, MS, etc.), disaster aid, etc.

So, if you take charitable giving off the table, that leaves items like the mortgage interest deduction and the state tax deductions. And both have pretty strong constituencies supporting them too (bipartisan at that) - and since the real estate markets have been among the hardest hit sectors, limiting the mortgage interest deduction is seen as hurting that recovery.

Thing is that if you want to gain revenue by eliminating deductions, credits, etc., alone, the best way IMO would be to revise the AMT and not only finally peg it to the CPI (as done with other taxes so we don't have to do the inane fight every year), but it can be simplified and folded into the general tax rates as a new rate bracket - make it your 39.6% bracket for say over $500k and have limited deductions.

Donations to your own church are fully tax deductible with no limit, that needs to change. My own mother used it for decades to avoid paying anything to the government, she said she would rather give it to the church than the Feds.

House Speaker John Boehner says President Obama should drop his proposal to avoid automatic tax increases and spending cuts at the end of the year, and instead embrace a plan outlined by Erskine Bowles -- co-chair of the White House's commission on fiscal responsibility -- at a congressional hearing last November.

"The new revenue in the Bowles plan would not be achieved through higher tax rates, which we continue to oppose and will not agree to in order to protect small businesses and our ailing economy," Boehner writes in a letter (PDF) to Obama. "Instead, new revenue would be generated through pro-growth tax reform that closes special-interest loopholes and deductions while lowering rates. On the spending side, the Bowles recommendation would cut more than $900 billion in mandatory spending and another $300 billion in discretionary spending. These cuts would be over and above the spending reductions enacted in the Budget Control Act."

How to keep the business owners and corporate execs from "punishing" their hourly and lower salary workers for voting for Obama is my concern.

No matter what, they will justify containing their largest expense (payroll) by saying "regulations, taxes, government intereference" is what is keeping us from paying you more. While at the same time giving themselves bonuses and moving more business to other countries where they can bribe their way to get what they want.
