How Unhinged Rhetoric From GOP Senators Sank a Disabilities Rights Treaty

John Birch Society-style craziness is now right wing mainstream
Wingnuts • Views: 24,744

You may have heard that Senate Republicans voted today to defeat a United Nations treaty to protect the rights of disabled people, but you may not have realized how completely insane some of the Republican arguments against this treaty were: How Unhinged Rhetoric Sank a Disabilities Rights Treaty in the Senate.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities failed to capture the 2/3 vote needed for ratification in the U.S. Senate today due to fierce Republican opposition. Many Republicans and their allies in the conservative movement claimed that the treaty codifies abortion into law, even though that preposterous claim was rejected by the National Right to Life Committee and Sen. John McCain. Along with the false charges about abortion, opponents of the treaty claimed it will undermine U.S. sovereignty and harm children. Critics like Rick Santorum warned that the treaty may kill his disabled daughter; Glenn Beck said it could create a “fascistic” government and Sen. Jim Inhofe alleged the treaty would help groups with “anti-American biases.”

One of the lesser-known but extremely active opponents of the bill was homeschooling activist Michael Farris.

During an interview with Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, he claimed that the treaty will prompt the United Nations to ‘get control’ of children with glasses or ADHD and remove them from their families.

Read the whole thing. It’s a sad snapshot of today’s deranged Republican Party.

This was pretty much a time killer for the lame ducks. It would have been nice if they actually filled some open judicial positions, but that's too much to hope for.

I'm sure it will return once the new Congress is seated.

First you have your treaty to care for the disabled, next you get UN Storm troopers busting down your door to perform mandatory abortions and drag your kids to public schools.

Its a slippery slope.

Way back when I registered to vote for the first time, it was the Democrats who were the hysterical ones. But even though they had Ted Kennedy, Jesse Jackson, and I think Hollywood was loonier then than now, I don't think they were ever this crazy.

This is utterly disgusting-especially since I think the treaty was based on the ADA in the first place.

I've let my senator (Johnson, R-Fitzwalkerstan) know what I think. Not that he has two brain cells to rub together or cares about anything but what his bosses at the Koch Brothers have to say.

Christ on a crutch, this scumbag defeated Feingold?

12 Holidays are Family Fun Time  Tue, Dec 4, 2012 6:59:30pm

hmm, no mention that the treaty recognizes the LGBT community? And women and children?

Have they learned that it is bad to say-out-loud that these things bother them so they come-up with outlandish excuses they think will be acceptable to the voters?

WTF? Even John McCain supported the treaty and told them they were full of shit.

Rick Santorum blithered:

"Now that CRPD is defeated, we know that the United Nations won't have oversight of how we care for our special needs kids. This treaty would have given the U.N. oversight of the healthcare and education choices parents with special needs kids make. Had it passed, CRPD would have become the law of the land under the U.S. Constitution's Supremacy Clause, and would have trumped state laws, and could have been used as precedent by state and federal judges. But now it won't."

17 TedStriker  Tue, Dec 4, 2012 7:02:45pm

Both of my Senators, Lamar! Alexander and Bob Corker, voted nay on this; I'd expected it from Corker, but not from "moderate" Alexander, a man who been in the game long enough to know better. I guess with the deeper reddening of Tennessee over the past decade, Alexander (and Corker) feels that the islands of blue (Nashville, Memphis) in a sea of red (most of the rest of the state) don't really count any more.

Here I am...I publicly defended Lamar! here not even a week or two ago, saying that he was one of the few Republicans that I'd still vote for because I respected him and wouldn't want him to get primaried in 2014 by a TPer.

After this, fuck him...he's shown that he's willing to pander to the nuts and fearmongers in this state just as much as a TPer would.

There was a thread on FR the other day about the British health care system (allegedly) letting babies die and how evil that was without a word about who would be paying the bills. I'm constantly amazed that people don't have a clue about how much it costs to keep people of all ages, who are going to die fairly soon and have a lousy quality of life in the meanwhile, alive.
I can understand why some folks want everything done, but then they have to figure out how it will be paid for.

John Kerry:

“Today the dysfunction hurt veterans and the disabled, and that’s unacceptable. This treaty was supported by every veterans group in America and Bob Dole made an inspiring and courageous personal journey back to the Senate to fight for it. It had bipartisan support, and it had the facts on its side, and yet for one ugly vote, none of that seemed to matter. We won’t give up on this and the Disabilities Treaty will pass because it’s the right thing to do, but today I understand better than ever before why Americans have such disdain for Congress and just how much must happen to fix the Senate so we can act on the real interests of our country.”

A comment from the Raw Story article on this made a very good point on why RWNJs were so dead set against this treaty:

Kesh Meshi • 5 hours ago

I think they do have a valid reason to oppose this.

Republicans believe in the primacy of the parental unit, and especially the father, in the family, which means that a judge can beat his disabled daughter on video and not lose his job. They support parents keeping their daughter in a permanent vegetative state against her wishes, and the Republican-controlled Congress will then pass specific legislation to keep her alive, in defiance of the courts and the rule of law.

This isn't even about protecting the precious baybees; it's about letting parents, especially fathers, do whatever they want to their children, regardless of societal standards, the law, or basic respect for human rights.

Oy, now that's an interesting idea for an essay. Maybe mix in some of Hooker's "Learned Discourse of Justification" as well... going to have to think on this a bit but it could be a fair bit of theological fun.

That would be the contradiction I had in mind --- mainstream Christianity is presently too civilized for another Jonathan Edwards.

Also, there's no need to bring rational thought into the enterprise. If people who are motivated by fear of God come to believe that the prosperity gospel is a heresy that risks eternal damnation, behavior might improve, and I'll take what I can get.

That would be helpful, but IIRC the first Great Awakening, while it focused on the individual's relationship with God and our being complete and utter failures (which doesn't say much for the Almighty's quality control) also was extremely emotional in nature which can lead to a lot of trouble.

True enough, but to take it as a starting point does not mean accepting his ideas or even his concept of God. If, forex, I were to write such a theological essay it might use some of the imagery & possibly a variation on it's structure but I doubt my liberal to radical christian theology would be very similar to what he held.

The GOP, of course! It's all about individual responsibility. In an all volunteer army, people choose to join. This is noble, but it is their own choice and they are responsible for the consequences. If the GOP votes to pour money into the military to be spent on contractors and equipment, they've done their part.

RWNJs love to "support the troops" when they have a war to send them to. After that (or when soldiers come back from their umpteenth tour of duty in the sandbox, mentally and/or physically broken), they're ignored and left alone by those same RWNJs.

I've known more than a few soldiers, some when I went to college at Austin Peay (a hop, skip, and a jump from Fort Campbell), and I find this "we support the troops, except when we don't" attitude from RWNJs to be highly insulting; shit like this make me ashamed to have ever considered myself a Republican.

As a kid I used to day dream staring at the nativity scene. We had old cast iron figures. The manger and the old aromatic miniature straw. The little baby Jesus would come out on Christmas. It also had the Three Wise Men who would come out on a certain date. My mom worked for the nun and my dad was in a Catholic seminary. Mostly they played soccer.

Wow, what an impressive witness to her faith. < rolls eyes > It also strikes me as odd that her photo on Twitter features her with someone else each holding what appears to be a beer. I realize that isn't specifically prohibited by most Christian denominations, but a "party girl" image strikes me as a bit odd for a young conservative Christian woman to be presenting to the world.

I read that shortly after the inauguration, Obama sought out one of the military officers at the white house to learn how to properly salute. Most times, for a civilian, the hand over the heart is the correct salute, but as commander in chief, he also needs to be able to render the correct hand salute in other contexts. He understood that he needed to know how and when and went out of his way to learn.

And yes, for a civilian observing a flag being raised or lowered, you take off any head wear, and place your hand over your heart. Too many no longer know these little bits of honor.

Why the GOP Won't Admit Supply-Side Econ Has Failed

A true party of business would end our investment in the false promise of supply-side economics.

However, a party with a goal of reducing the scale of programs such as Social Security and Medicare along with delivering tax cuts to wealthy political backers would use arguments about the economic effects of tax cuts to disguise its true intentions.

Which description fits best? Many Republicans still claim that tax cuts for the wealthy enhance economic growth despite the evidence to the contrary, but it’s rare to hear a Republican admit that these supply-side policies have failed.

Why the GOP Won't Admit Supply-Side Econ Has Failed

By now, I think there is enough evidence to answer as follows: Because the present incarnation of the GOP is interested only in enriching the wealthy at everyone else's expense.

The aftermath of Sandy provided an instructive example --- the claim by some free marketeers that temporary price controls and/or rationing for gas were improper, and that the "free market" would sort it out better.

Just being filthy rich is not enough, apparently. No, we have to go all the way into a laissez-faire dystopia before these free market loons will be satisfied. After all, it is an intolerable burden on the rich if they are not permitted to price-gouge and corner the market to line their own pockets.

“For me, it’s about the fact that the tax increases he wants would fail to make even a small dent in the debt, but it would hurt middle class businesses and the people who work for them,” Rubio said.

Meh. That's the way they do it. Santorum came in second in 2012. Therefore he will be the nominee in 2016 no matter how the party has to break it's own rules to ensure this. That's been the process since 1976 and by god they aren't going to change now...

Mainly it was because establishment Republicans were pissed at Buchanan for challenging Bush Sr. in 1992. If he hadn't done that then the rule would have held for Dole. Bush Jr. totally breaks the model though, came out of nowhere.

Sparrows use cigarette butts to deter pests, scientists find

Cigarette butts are widely reviled as an urban nuisance but birds in Mexico City see them as a boon, apparently using them to deter parasites from their nests, scientists say.

Local sparrows and finches incorporate smoked cigarette butts in their nests to provide cosy cellulose lining for their chicks and nicotine to ward off mites, they believe.

A team led by Constantino Macias Garcia at the National Autonomous University monitored 57 nests and found that the tally of bugs declined as the number of smoked butts in each nest increased.

Jon Stewart summarizes GOP budget plan: Jump off the fiscal cliff voluntarily

“This has 1.2 trillion in cuts, but they’re saying, ‘Why don’t we just make the whole thing cuts to entitlements and domestic spending and not cut defense at all?” Stewart said. “Basically, they’re trying to entice the Democrats by saying, ‘I don’t want you to fall off this cliff, so why don’t you voluntarily jump off this steeper cliff? But don’t worry, your fall will be cushioned by lava.”

Stewart mocked Democrats for saying the GOP budget plan wasn’t “balanced” instead of laughing in Republicans’ faces and comparing the budget to “Stalin fucking a Bald Eagle.”

I see the destruction of the Republican party from within as an example of Murphy's law.

Republican legislatures gerrymandered themselves super-right wing districts totally free from balance, nearly free from any possibility of competition from Democrats.

Then Murphy's law kicked in. As soon as a seat is gerrymandered to be safe from Democrats, it is no longer safe in the primary. Now these artificially right wing districts are held hostage by the sizable right wing nutcase crowd, the Birchers, the drooling paranoid idiot racist rabble.

While FOX 32's Larry Yellen was interviewing the dog's owners, two police officers drove by the home. 90 minutes later, they came back, asked why Phillips why he had contacted the media and gave him a ticket for not keeping Colonel on a leash.

"They were giving us a ticket, three days after the fact," says Phillips. "So I think they're probably trying to cover their rear ends."

Now these artificially right wing districts are held hostage by the sizable right wing nutcase crowd, the Birchers, the drooling paranoid idiot racist rabble.

ok, minor pet peeve. This isn't Murphy, it's Unintended Consequences.

There's a range of "oops" laws, and calling them all Murphy is, for me, like saying all physical laws are Ohm's law.

But as I said it's minor peeve.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area, where many on LI, SI, and the Jersey shore are struggling to recover from #Sandy, even when they have flood and regular home insurance because of the amount of damage and time it takes to process claims. The MTA has restored still more service, but the service that is lacking is likely to be out for a good time to come. That includes the South Ferry station and the A train to the Rockaways. They expect the Montague St. tunnel (servicing the R) will be back up and running in the next few weeks. Amazing how much they've done in such a short time, but it highlights the importance of proper infrastructure and mass transit in keeping a city of this size in good repair.

And this is proof that most people who are online have the reading comprehension of an amoeba. As many Facebook users know, the company is changing some of its governance rules, and has its users submitting votes.

The company clearly states that the user is the one who controls their copyright (as they always have).

Ownership of your content. A number of the comments suggested that we were changing ownership of your content on Facebook. We’re not. This is not true and has never been the case. Anyone who uses Facebook owns and controls the content and information they post, as stated in our SRR. They control how that content and information is shared. That is our policy, and it always has been. We’re not proposing to change this key aspect of how Facebook works.

So, instead of understanding this, hundreds of commenters are cut-pasting the idiotic nonsense that was debunked by Snopes and Facebook itself:

In response to the new Facebook guidelines, I hereby declare that my copyright is attached to all of my personal details, status updates, messages, photos, and all other photo content that I post online on my personal profile page or anyone else's page. For commercial use of the above, my written consent is required at all times.

Or, they clip the longer version of this, complete with the nonexistent Berner Convention reference. (FYI, it's the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, as amended, but there's also US Copyright law protections pursuant to Title 17 of the USC).

If people can't understanding what they're reading here, why would it be any different with health care policy, the disabilities treaty, or anything else Congress is considering? And you've got people willing to take advantage of that ignorance, lack of comprehension, or just plain stupidity.

This just in: NY Post exhibits complete lack of ethics.

That poor man's family has to live with that image.

It was bad enough that the family had to suffer through the senseless murder of their loved one, but the Post posted a sensationalist photo that not only affects the family, but the engineer of that train who was unable to stop in time before running over that man.

The Post was wrong to run with that photo. I get that it's newsworthy - it was the outcome of a criminal act, but that doesn't mean that you post every photo or video.

It's something photographers struggle with all the time, especially those who are considering photojournalism. For me, I covered the Sandy coverage/destruction but tried to avoid picking personal reactions or focus on the damage to any one individual. These were my neighbors and people in my town. They were dealing with tremendous damage and having someone acting as a gawker wouldn't benefit them, even though highlighting the scope of the disaster could bring more attention and relief efforts. It's a balancing act, but in a situation like the subway pushing, I'd err on the side of not running with that kind of image - and would actually try to help instead of taking photos of the man's last moments alive.

I really don't get what the problem in thinking is that causes Magical Balance Fairy worship.

I think at this point, Politifact knows that they can make serious coin by pushing the Magical Balance Fairy narrative.

With American politics, it's very easy to go "They're all equally bad." Partly because it's not hard to find dirtbags from both sides of the aisle, but mostly because it appeals to that American instinct for fairness.

As others have pointed out, however, it's the mother of all false equivalencies. As I've said before, it's a way to avoid reality. KT's bullshit "Maddow = Beck" pronouncement is a prime example of that.

Ditto watching conservatives and Republicans suddenly become "independent", yet these brave non-partisan heroes continue to vote GOP and cast Obama as incompetent as Mayor Quimby on The Simpsons.

Unfortunately, we maybe stuck with Politifact for years. Much as Fox News has discovered pushing a conservative narrative is a massive moneymaker, The Tampa Bay Times is riding the "neutrality" train all the way to the bank.

To be eligible for the Darwin awards you have to do something stupid enough to get you killed, die from your action, and have never spawned a child.

If you're self-posting (photobloggers/photojournalists), it's a decision the photographer makes. I was covering both situations.

If you're the photographer who took that picture, you have to make the decision to send the photo up to the editor, who ultimately makes that decision.

The editors at the Post were wrong for publishing the photo.

1) They're describing him as a freelancer. Granted, it's a broad description, but his employment status is immaterial to the ethics questions involved.

2) This is true. He could have also deleted the photo without anyone knowing.

3) Not questioning that.

4) As I said, there's some question. IIRC, the photog was quoted as saying he was trying to use the flash to somehow alert the engineer that something was up. That comes off as a weak excuse for snapping photos of a man about to be run over by a subway train.

People manager - QA is my specialty, but I'll look into other areas of management. I like people so I'm good at keeping them motivated and productive. I was excited about the opportunity to rape HP of its talent when I left, but it became obvious within a few weeks of starting that they sold me a story that wasn't all there. My boss hired me to help establish process and rein in a very cowboy-developer group...which I did, in part by setting boundaries with other groups in the company who needed dev/qa people to help them, got the PMs to alter their release schedule so there were two cycles and not one big one, etc...but during that time they froze hiring, and two weeks ago started making cuts. The GOP gave a nonsensical and bogus reason for voting down the treaty. GOPers made claims that are just flat out lies about the effects of the treaty on US citizens.

They ignored decades of jurisprudence showing that US law supersedes those of treaties, and that US statutes can override treaty obligations. The Constitution trumps treaties, so if there is a provision that indicates fewer rights or reduces protections, it can't override constitutional protections.

And the lame duck answer was just lame. Fact is that the current know-nothing GOP Congressional delegation is hell bent on doing nothing that could potentially inure a benefit to President Obama. They've put politics ahead of common sense, logic, facts, or the law.

They blew off former GOP Presidential nominee Robert Dole, his wife Elizabeth, and others who have fought for the treaty. In doing so, they highlighted just how they view everyone other than the privileged few (mirroring their larger problem).

re: #240 Obdicut

Why are you sure of that?

Short answer: Because his stroke has left him disabled, so someone trying to make an issue about this in a primary would just end up looking like an asshole. That being the case, Kirk would better off politically in this state having voted for the treaty. So I don't need to know his heart, as I know the politics.

Not just Rick Santorum, but the GOP at large, Dark. Only 8 GOP senators voted for it. So why focus on Santorum, rather than the GOP in general? Too uncomfortable to really admit what this means about the GOP?

No, I'm just flinging mud at someone who I thought was better than whom he has just shown himself to be.

Mornin' gang...is it unemployed in here or is it just me?

Yeah, I got caught in the "how can we make our numbers look better in Q4 so we can get more VC funding?" trap. I'm actually kind of relieved. I wasn't super-thrilled with that start up (though I'll miss the buck-sixty they were paying me). And, as I told my wife last night, now I can go up to Lake Tahoe and get a few extra ski patrol days in during December, so I won't be in a panic in March/April trying to make my commitment.

What to do next? Who knows? I think for the first time in my life I'm going to wait a few weeks and not just grab another job immediately...there's no sense in looking before January anyway. The missus thinks I should look at applying my skills in a political organization. That could be fun.

As a very-long-term unemployed / sorta-self employed (at a certain point they blend together), unsolicited advice is not necessarily trustworthy but I'm giving it anyway. Don't "not look" entirely.

I'd say at all, but you've got great timing because of holidays and end-of-year. But still I recommend taking two short weeks (three days) during December to do the prep work. Clean - and have reviewed - your base resume and the various special clauses for various types of employers. Do a skills review. Pick up a couple of "tough interview question" guides and prep the answers. Figure out which if any social contact sites (facebook, linkedin, etc) you're going to use for job fishing and get those cleaned up for the search.

Not least here is that it's better to be prepared and get nothing in December than it is to have somebody make an opening offer while you're unprepared.

Santorum's an easy target to fling at. But tell me, why do you direct that kind of ire at Santorum for joining WND, yet you didn't castigate Romney for promoting birther-in-chief Trump? Why are you still trying to pump Bobby Jindal, when his views on religion and the state are just as whackaloon as Santorum's?

This failure of the GOP has got to be some kind of wakeup call to you, hasn't it? They just lied their asses off to block a treat that was created by Republicans and lobbied for by Republicans. If you're 'loyal' to the GOP, how about being loyal to the more-sane GOP of yesteryear, rather than the current bunch of phonies?

Next week, I'll go ski a few days, but bring my computer so I can start seeing what's out there. The longest I've ever gone between jobs is three weeks. Arrington then allegedly ran up to his stepfather with balled fists. Markiece Palmer — who is 6 feet, 1 inch tall and weighs 150 pounds — then grabbed the boy by his arms and shook him hard. Dina Palmer said she also struck Arrington with a belt and a paddle two to three times, the report said.

During the altercation, Arrington reportedly ran down the stairs and fell, hitting his forehead on a table, Markiece Palmer told police. The stepfather then told Arrington to take a bath, after which he put cocoa butter on the open wounds on the boy's buttocks, the report said.

Arrington, who told his father he felt like throwing up, then went to bed. He never woke up, the report said.

Markiece Palmer found the breathing, but unresponsive, boy in his bed between 6 and 6:45 a.m. on Thursday, the report said. Dina Palmer called their pastor, who told them to call an ambulance.

The mother called 911 at about 8 a.m., a little more than an hour after the stepfather found the boy unresponsive in bed, the report said.

When asked about the bruises and scars on her boy's body, Dina Palmer admitted to police the marks were from "whoopins" from both her and Markiece Palmer, the report said.

Police recovered a broken broom stick with what appears to be blood, belts, cords, spatulas and bloodied clothes from a warrant search of the Palmer residence, the report said.

In 1942, Dole joined the United States Army's Enlisted Reserve Corps to fight in World War II. Dole became a second lieutenant in the Army's 10th Mountain Division. In April 1945, while engaged in combat near Castel d'Aiano in the Apennine mountains southwest of Bologna, Italy, Dole was hit by German machine gun fire in his upper right back and his right arm was also badly injured. As Lee Sandlin describes, when fellow soldiers saw the extent of his injuries all they thought they could do was to "give him the largest dose of morphine they dared and write an 'M' for 'morphine' on his forehead in his own blood, so that nobody else who found him would give him a second, fatal dose."[10] The hospital where Dole recovered from his wounds, the former Battle Creek Sanitarium, is now named Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center in honor of three patients who became United States Senators: Dole, Philip Hart and Daniel Inouye.

Dole was decorated three times, receiving two Purple Hearts for his injuries, and the Bronze Star with combat "V" for valor for his attempt to assist a downed radio man.

Very likely, since polls the past two weeks have shown 60% think Republicans are the ones in the way of a deal being made and 53% will blame them if we go over the cliff. But they seem to think that beating the same dead horse, that Obama has to "make the first move," is a winning strategy for them.

285 dragonfire1981  Wed, Dec 5, 2012 8:22:05am

Fox News really pulled a good one this time.

Here's the headline:

Republicans Resist Reality in the Age of Obama

And here are the first few paragraphs of the piece:

Republicans can learn a lot about dealing with Barack Obama in the current fiscal negotiations from how Obama conducted his re-election campaign.

Obama ran an audaciously negative campaign with the intention of winning a base-versus-base election with superior resources and organization. And he did exactly that. Obama worked to shrink the electorate by driving squeamish moderates and independents out of the pool and then won the partisan grudge match among those who remained.

Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s campaign in the spring and most of the summer was a riff on Bob Dole’s 1996 lament: “Where is the outrage?”
Romney demanded that the press and public hold Obama accountable for running a small, grinding and negative campaign based mostly on character assassination. Where’s the Hope and Change? Where’s the vision?

What he found was that the public has such low expectations for politics and politicians that Obama was able to surmount the barely-there bar for public discourse. And as for the press, while Romney’s frustrations would occasionally elicit some high-minded regret from the media establishment, it was quickly excused as necessary, given the aforementioned rottenness of political life.

Sometimes, Obama’s tactics and personal disdain for Romney were even recounted admiringly as evidence of a fierce competitive spirit within the president – a jock’s sensibility rather than the professorial attitude most Americans are familiar with.

Romney eventually quit complaining and started working to undo the damage Obama had done to the former Massachusetts governor’s reputation. He also took a tougher tone in prosecuting Obama’s record. Rather than saying the president was a nice guy who was in over his head, Romney started saying that Obama was reckless and wrong on the economy and spending.
But it was too late. Those persuadable voters who didn’t stay home concluded that while Romney might have a better economic plan, they didn’t trust him to look after their best interests. Republicans are scouring their souls and attempting a game of demographic connect-the-dots, but one lesson they have largely overlooked is that voters do not trust big government or big business.

Republicans are now stunned – “flabbergasted” said the House speaker -- that Obama is bringing a similarly audacious approach to his efforts to secure tax rate increases on top earners and other liberal fiscal wish-list items.

Republicans assumed since they came back to town, hats in hand, ready to do a deal on taxes, Obama would give them grace enough and political cover enough to get the deal done. That’s old Washington thinking. That’s Romney thinking. That’s thinking unsuited to the Age of Obama.

Also of note: This does not appear in the opinion section but in the politics section.

we TAKE them from our creator libtard.

to go along with the UN or any other body- undermines that fact and sets precedence for future UN control on other things. they disguise these things as a human right.
where in our constitution does it say we take UN rights as human?? we take our marching orders from our own constitution. the UN should be banned from US shores and DEFUNDED. PERIOD

Yep.

From the "smart" Republicans over at the National Review

U.S. 1, U.N. 0

Earlier today, the Senate rejected a U.N. treaty on the rights of the disabled. Supporters trotted out Bob Dole, as though sympathy for a wounded war hero should logically translate into support for a U.N. power grab. The measure was defended with the usual lies about its having no possible effect on our sovereignty.

Humans are afraid of death. It's as simple as that. Most people have an extremely hard time coming to terms with the idea that every life ends at some point. We piss away vast sums of money every year so that people at the end of their lives can have a few more miserable months full of pain and suffering, rather than just accept the fact that their time is done.

I can only take solace in the fact that things like Do Not Resuscitate allow people that choose to accept reality to make it easier for everyone involved.

Another OT: Does anyone else here sell on Amazon?

I like the fact the site gives the items a lot of exposure and the ordering/payment/return structure makes me feel better about doing business there than say, Craigslist.

But the downward pressure on pricing is ridiculous. Products end up going for very cheap because sellers keep lowering prices and lowering prices to draw attention to themselves.

Products that are $20 brand new can be $3.99 used because of all the resellers driving down prices (and this in categories other than books where the 0.01 products reign supreme).

I'm not going to knock it that much because I've made a decent bit of money doing this, but it could have been even more if not for the ridiculous competition.

re: #310 GunstarGreen

Humans are afraid of death. It's as simple as that. Most people have an extremely hard time coming to terms with the idea that every life ends at some point. We piss away vast sums of money every year so that people at the end of their lives can have a few more miserable months full of pain and suffering, rather than just accept the fact that their time is done.

I can only take solace in the fact that things like Do Not Resuscitate allow people that choose to accept reality to make it easier for everyone involved.

Most people who say "do everything" are also not familiar with just what "everything" means. People who have seen resuscitations tend to be a lot more willing to forego them for themselves.

Sununu: Obama Won Because He Turned Out Voters ‘Dependent’ On Government

Former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu (R), the irascible TV face of Mitt Romney’s campaign, told a Granite State audience Tuesday that President Obama won reelection thanks to a base that’s “dependent, to a great extent economically, on government policy and government programs.”

That puts Sununu squarely in the “gifts” caucus, the group of Republicans who — like Romney himself — believe Obama’s coalition is formed by people who want handouts rather than the self-sufficient, individualistic base that they envision as the GOP base. In the wake of the Republican losses across the country last month, the party has split over the “gifts” idea, with some former Romney surrogates and officials dismissing the notion and others, like Sununu, embracing it.

It really is a comedy of errors at this point.

Hey, assholes: I, and almost literally everyone I know (except for my parents, really) are solidly middle-class, do not draw any form of government 'handout' (we freely acknowledge government's role in providing much of the vital infrastructure that enables our modern lives), and vote Democrat. Each time you tell us that we're a bunch of freeloading moochers that are "economically dependent on government", you fuck yourselves out of a block of potential voters.

Heh. Companies fall over each other to get government subsidies - whether its property tax breaks, PILOTs, tax credits, and other incentives. Some net hundreds of millions of dollars in the process.

MSFT - $312 million since 2007 from multiple states
GM - $1.7 billion from multiple states
P&G - $128 million since 2007
EADS (Airbus) - $158 million
Sears - $163 million
Revel Entertainment (NJ casino operator) - $261 million
Weyerhaeuser - $406 million ($201 million since 2007)
ADM - $110 million
Amazon - $348 million

That's just a small sampling of grants. Some of those companies are doing incredibly well. Others are struggling mightily. But all are receiving some manner of subsidy or incentive from states to stay put or relocate.

Inhofe Claims Obama and Liberals Hope to Disband the Military

Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) appeared on conspiracy theorist Frank Gaffney’s show yesterday where they railed against President Obama over his speech at the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Symposium. Gaffney claimed that Obama was practicing “national security fraud” and is “misleading the American people” by heralding new efforts to curtail the proliferation of nuclear weapons, while Inhofe said that the dream of Obama and the far-left is to disband the military altogether. “The far-left doesn’t think we need a military to start with, they really don’t,” Inhofe told Gaffney, “They would never say that but they do believe that.”

[T]he FBI has access to the data collected, which is basically the e-mails of virtually everybody in the country. … All the congressional members are on the surveillance too, no one is excluded. … So, yes, this can happen to anyone. If they become a target for whatever reason – they are targeted by the government, the government can go in, or the FBI, or other agencies of the government, they can go into their database, pull all that data collected on them over the years, and we analyze it all. So, we have to actively analyze everything they’ve done for the last 10 years at least.

No, the JBS didn't create the crazed bigots, but it does organize and empower them and turn them into a real threat instead of a collection of isolated weirdos. During halftime of Sunday night’s NFL football game, NBC sportscaster Bob Costas weighed in on the recent murder-suicide carried out by Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher, noting that the prevalence of guns in our culture is making such tragedies more common.

This commentary has, predictably, outraged the Right, most notably NRA President Wayne LaPierre, who appeared on Glenn Beck's television program to frantically warn that "the media in this country hates the Second Amendment rights of American citizens and they'll do anything to try and take that freedom away from average citizens" by teaming up with the Obama Administration to carry out a wholesale "siege on the Second Amendment in this country like we've never seen before":

Back home (where they spend most of their time), guys like Inhofe live in a bubble formed by the local Republicans, an echo chamber where views like theirs are never questioned. We saw this in the casual, matter of fact way in which our Judge Tom Head presented his insane UN conspiracy theory to the Lubbock media. In local GOP circles, this kind of assertion is taken for granted, just part of the shared background. Tom knew that people like liberals and gays might reject the claim but he had no idea that most of the larger world would think he was batshit crazy. Since Inhofe is in contact at least with the real world, he would know better than to make statements like this in the wrong setting, but he would not have any reason to sincerely reject them. Review: Cypherpunks: Freedom and the Future of the Internet

1. The internet is a threat to human civilization because of its panoptic surveillance and profiling of users.

2. "Strategic surveillance" gathers all online and cellphone data as distinguished from tactical surveillance with is specifically targeted.

3. Internet and cellphones allow surveillance more efficiently and pervasively than in the physical world.

4. Individuals can be surveilled more easily if they remain mesmerized by computers, cellphones and social media.

5. Encryption prevents access to private secrets by official and commercial online surveillance and by cellphones.

6. Protestors in Arab Spring went to the streets when cellphone and online systems were disabled and thereby escaped digital surveillance.

7. General purpose computers avoid the built-in controls of special purpose computers and devices.

8. Free software avoids the control of restrictive governmental and commercial software.

9. Free encryption and anonymizing technologies can protect against authoritarian aggression embedded in the equipment and operating systems of computers, cellphones, networks, internet service providers, financial institutions and governments.

10. Younger generations will need to invent and distribute ideas, critiques, code and technology against the legacy controls of older generations indoctrinated in submissive acceptance of authority.

11. Diverse, heterogenic concepts and technology will be required to oppose centralizing, homogenizing intents of the government- and commerce-dominated Internet and cellphones.

I have to agree. There are better organizations.

They have to keep the membership entertained.

I'd be happy if they were simply "upper-middle-class" for a month or two.

IIRC Chris Rock talked about wealthy people becoming poor, and something to the extent you mentioned.

"If Bill Gates woke up tomorrow with Oprah's money, he'd throw himself out a fuckin' window."

It almost seems like the money people earn is inversely proportional to how much they think they "need." Which is why a disproportionate amount of the rich supported Romney and the Republicans' tax agenda; we need MOAR!

What can I say. Maybe I'm weird but the NSA, FBI, or whatever agency should obtain a warrant before collecting anyone's email. I'm not sure if they're capable of getting everyone's email yet but the capability will soon be there. Bottom line? The government should have no fucking right to access personal emails without a court order. End of story.

A friend of mine once said told me that she learned from the very rich she knew that they are afraid, very afraid, because they know they can't make it in the real world.

I agree. But I'm not confident it is or will be that way.

I was a card-carrying member in my teens, not any more. They've become a complete joke at this point. They have 0 to do with gun rights. Zero. It's become all about sustaining themselves while becoming nothing more than an extension for Republicans and right-wingers.

That's why it should be a cause for concern. It shouldn't be allowed to be that way but Americans don't seem to care anymore about their civil liberties. Thankfully there are groups like the ACLU to overlook and pursue these matters. Otherwise, we're creating an almost perfect infrastructure for a dictatorship and that's not something to be proud of. They got their "Pearl Harbor" and are taking advantage of it. Unfortunately it's also become a bipartisan effort.

Preach it brother Gus.

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

From one of those "Founding Fathers" we all hear so much about.

I think it's more about choosing your battles. Information I put out over the intertoobs is no longer in my control. It's so mindboggling. My body, my home, yes these things I have some illusion of control over.

internet --not so much.

So my cousin had her second kid. Only five days after what would have been our Nana's 100th birthday. She named him after our grandfather. Big boy too. Since he lives in the UK, perhaps we'll have the first Rugby player in our family yet.

Republicans are wack, with poo brain.

They are the true cowards. Hiding from sincere expression like vampires in the nude who hide from the light.

Ahh, the illusion of control.

In the movie instinct (I have a weird memory where I can recall pretty much any movie quote/scene after seeing it just once), Hopkins gets free and puts Cuba Gooding in a choke-hold and asks him what he has taken. On the 3rd answer, after I think freedom and something else, Gooding scribbles down "my illusions." Correct answer, Hopkins releases the hold.
