With Washington state set to legalize possession of small amounts of marijuana just after midnight tonight, and Colorado set to decriminalize pot next month, All Things Considered today turned to “stoner” comic Tommy Chong to get his perspective.

Needless to say, the half Asian half of Cheech and Chong is very happy. He’s planning to move to both states, Chong joked.

And he’s not worried that some of the fun of the stoner humor he and Cheech Marin pioneered in the ’70s is going to be gone.

“Going to jail [as he has] and being arrested by cops and being hassled … is never fun,” he said. “There’s nothing glamorous … that we’re going to miss.”

I actually had this debate with a Music Appreciation Teacher in college. I won.

It takes a long time to prove "staying power". We won't be alive to know which of the modern artists will be recognized in 100 years. You can't look at the Beatles or Led Zepplin and ask if they will have the staying power of Mozart. No one knew in Mozart's time that his music would still be played in the 21st Century.

The former commander of the Central Contra Costa County Narcotics Enforcement Team (CNET) and a special agent supervisor of the California Department of Justice pleaded guilty to five felony counts in federal court in Oakland today, United States Attorney Melinda Haag announced.

Norman Wielsch admitted one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and to distribute marijuana and 50 grams or more of methamphetamine, one count of theft from programs receiving federal funds, two counts of civil rights conspiracy, and one count of Hobbs Act robbery. In pleading guilty to the charges, Wielsch, 51, admitted to stealing from evidence facilities $30,000 to $70,000 worth of marijuana and methamphetamine that had been seized during legitimate CNET raids.

Specifically, Wielsch admitted that he stole at least 20 pounds of marijuana and more than 400 grams of high-purity methamphetamine (ice) between November 2010 and February 2011. He further admitted to conspiring to distribute these drugs with his codefendant, private investigator and former Antioch police officer Christopher Butler, also 51

Wingnuts at Hot Air (which I'm not allowed to link to) are outraged that the Republican's "War on Women" isn't in the running for Politifact's Lie of the Year.

To make sure I got the whole story, I spoke with PolitiFact editor Bill Adair, who told me why the “War on Women” didn’t make the cut:

“Lie of the Year comes from statements PolitiFact has rated ‘False’ or ‘Pants on Fire.’ We rate the ‘Lie of the Year’ as the boldest statement or the statement with the biggest reach. Obviously, it’s subjective,” he said. “We didn’t do a fact-check on a statement that there was a War on Women. It was an opinion, and we don’t fact-check opinions. People used it as a sum-up of a variety of aspects of the 2012 campaigns, but it was an overall opinion, not a statement of policy fact.”

I don’t know if PolitiFact’s liberal bias was coming through here, or if the staff just dropped the ball, but I’d say the policy statements and implications were pretty significant, as was the reach. And as Paul Wilson of the Media Research Center pointed out on Twitter, the “War” was even used as a pretext to oppose a ban on sex-selective abortions that was debated in Congress.

Every year, partisans attack or defend PolitiFact for its Lie of the Year. It’s become an annual pre-Christmas tradition. This year, I’m going to join in and say that the “War on Women” should have at least made the Finals, if not been handed the dubious championship trophy.

If songs like Stairway to Heaven or most anything in the Beatles or Zeppelin catalogs isn't considered a classic a hundred years from now, it wouldn't be a world worth living in.

I ran across some interesting advice - I think it was in Brust's Agyar - that if music isn't at least 40 years old it's not worth listening to. It takes that long for the 'pop' to go away (mostly).

While I mostly disagree, there are times some recently booming set of headphones makes me think he was right.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) introduced legislation to raise the debt ceiling on Thursday, apparently with the intent of showing that even Democrats would not support such a bill.

However, McConnell’s plan backfired after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) called for a vote on the legislation, which would have given the president the authority to raise the federal debt ceiling on his own. The top Senate Republican was forced to filibuster his own bill.

Any Conservatives on LGF left who can defend this disgrace? Jesus Christ, can we please have a second party that takes this seriously? Pretty fucking please? With sugar on top?

Well, the GOP is simply unfit to govern. Collectively, they couldn't be trusted with the public policy issues relating to a hamlet with population 20.

That isn't a joke, because it will be hard to get them out of the House, and they could take the Senate/Presidency with a lucky break or two.

If I were in Obama's shoes, I would seriously consider whether I could provoke an impeachment from the GOP House by simply doing my job in a calm and rational manner. That might be useful to expose the madness of the Republicans.

Here in California the demise of the GOP has followed a pretty well understood path. The California GOP refused to change its positions as the major urban areas grew, and the policies of the GOP did not meet the requirements of the new populace.

So the GOP here has been in decline since the 1970's.

Politicians have to change to meet the demands of today's society, or they will get pushed aside.

Ransomware expanding in US

In the past year, hundreds of thousands of people across the world have switched on their computers to find distressing messages alerting them that they no longer have access to their PCs or any of the files on them.

The messages claim to be from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, some 20 other law enforcement agencies across the globe or, most recently, Anonymous, a shadowy group of hackers. The computer users are told that the only way to get their machines back is to pay a steep fine.

And, curiously, it’s working. The scheme is making more than $5 million a year, according to computer security experts who are tracking them.

The scourge dates to 2009 in Eastern Europe. Three years later, with business booming, the perpetrators have moved west. Security experts say that there are now more than 16 gangs of sophisticated criminals extorting millions from victims across Europe.

My kids' computer got hit with this earlier this year, nothing a reboot in safe mode and running Norton AV couldn't fix.

Mexican Supreme Court rules for marriage equality

In a unanimous ruling Wednesday, the Supreme Court of Mexico has paved the way for same-sex couples to marry in every one of the country’s 31 states before the U.S. has federal marriage equality.

Gay marriage has been legal in the Federal District, Mexico City, since 2010, and the Supreme Court had previously ruled that those marriages must be recognized nationwide. Wednesday’s ruling struck down a law in the southern state of Oaxaca that denied same-sex couples the right to marry there.

The ruling could have repercussions beyond Mexico’s borders. The couples seeking to marry in the Oaxaca case based their claims partly on protections in the American Convention on Human Rights, which has legal force in many Latin American countries. In saying that bans on same-sex marriage are discriminatory, the court may establish a precedent that could be used by LGBT activists throughout the region.

This comes before the U.S. Supreme Court has even decided whether it will hear a gay marriage case.

The vet was able to get him rehydrated and by Wednesday his blood numbers for various toxins normally screened by the kidneys were back in range (from 8x normal down to about 1.5x normal.) However, whatever caused this, believed to be kidney stone(s) or an infection blocking kidney operation, caused enough permanent damage that his remaining kidney function was less than marginal. Which led to some further complications as well.

At which point the vet and I decided that putting him down was the best option at this point. He was warm and not in pain.

He had a very good run, and he will be missed.

At this point there are no plans for getting replacement Overlords until after the holiday travels are completed.

Very sorry to hear it. We lost a long-term companion/overlord almost 6 years ago, after a run of nearly 21 years. Nicest, smartest and most resilient cat we'd ever known, and we've known plenty. We still miss him, despite the passage of time and the presence of other cats in the house. Each cat has a place in your heart and home all his or her own.

Sorry to hear that. I'm glad he didn't suffer much. Losing a well-loved pet is hard, but you can take comfort in the fact that you gave Sherman a good life and he liked you for it. The pain is the proof he made you happy.

Getting this right matters. If policy makers believe that the labor market has not improved over the past three years, they will reject the stimulus approach that the president took in 2009 and oppose further efforts to boost aggregate demand — just as John A. Boehner, the speaker of the House, did last week after the administration called for a $50 billion stimulus package.

Over the coming weeks, big fiscal policy choices will be made, and many will be looking backward for a guide on how to move forward. But just as the generation that once proclaimed “don’t trust anyone over 30” has had to face the reality of gray hair and grandkids, the new economics of the baby boom dictate that we must deal with the country and economy we have today — not the one in the history books.

This is a nuance that often gets lost in the shouting match and I am not sure if Gohmert is really so dense as not to get it or if he is just instrumentalizing it for PR purposes: I really believe that official language must be "politically correct", i.e., gender, racially and value-neutral.

I do not think that those rules should apply to any other sort of speech.

As someone whose life is permanently stamped by mental illness--anxiety and depression--it's a big fucking deal that legal documents not label me a lunatic, which is a ridiculously hazy term that harkens back to incurable complaints caused by astrology, and is larded by centuries of use with images of delusion, violence, and mania.

I take shit for being "crazy" pretty routinely. It's ain't funny, and it closes doors that would otherwise be open, all because people are plug-ignorant and unwilling to be empathetic on the subject of mental illness. Yeah, I kind of like the government not do the same thing in their formal, binding deliberations and documents.

I have to admit that for all the other problems and crises I have in my life, I had my sexuality sorted out by the time I was nine years old.

I had a lot of problems about it in high school, becuase I was not interested in "manly" stuff like sports or cars, I was into art and literature music and hung out with a lot of other social rejects, many of whom later came out as gay.

That's apparently newsworthy, even though he's had no problem sending thousands of his Hamas minions to their deaths by calling for jihad against Israel from the relative safety of Damascus over the past two decades.

Now, Damascus isn't all that safe (nor is Syria at large with the civil war raging there), so Gaza is perceived as a safer haven than Syria.

What’s going on here? Having taken Boehner’s sword, and then his shirt, Obama sent Geithner to demand Boehner’s trousers. Perhaps this is what Obama means by a balanced approach.

He pretends that Boehner’s offer to raise revenues by eliminating deductions rather than by raising rates is fiscally impossible. But on July 22, 2011, Obama said that “$1.2 trillion in additional revenues . . . could be accomplished without hiking tax rates, but could simply be accomplished by eliminating loopholes, eliminating some deductions, and engaging in a tax reform process.” Which is exactly what the Republicans are offering today.

As for the alleged curative effect on debt of Obama’s tax-rate demand — the full rate hike on the “rich” would have reduced the 2012 deficit from $1.10 trillion to $1.02 trillion.

That’s a joke, a rounding error.

Such nonsense abounds because Obama’s objective in these negotiations is not economic but political: not to solve the debt crisis but to fracture the Republican majority in the House. Get Boehner to cave, pass the tax hike with Democratic votes provided by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and let the Republican civil war begin.

First off. The Speaker of the House is never deposed. That would be up to the Republicans themselves who would put up his replacement to a vote. It would be a decision the Republicans would have to make themselves. His replacement would likely be someone who is seen as equally obstructionist to the president. In other words, there would be no change to Republican House opposition to the president. Another thing is that it's the Tea Party and right wing pundits like Malkin, et al, who are making the most rumblings about Boehner's alleged weakness in this fiscal cliff drama. Boehner himself has been behind removing many of the more immoveable members of House committees. Lastly, I see no proof of Obama trying to create an "entitlement state."

Boehner's got a few problems - none of which are President Obama's fault:
1. Finding consensus in his own party is like putting frogs in a wheelbarrow. He can't control them...they're too fucking crazy.
2. He's not very good at his job. This is because he's lazy. He hasn't even bothered to write up a serious budget/tax/spending proposal of his own. He's just using the Romney/Ryan outline as a proposal - and even that is a hollow shell of a policy.
3. He's manipulative. Granted, for the last two years he could wait for President Obama to give him most of what he wanted, but that was because President Obama didn't care about the small battles. That won't work anymore. He's being asked to actually say what he wants in cuts...to take ownership. But passive-aggressive people can't do that. It's too scary.

As for Krauthammer, he's a fucking nut himself.

The vet was able to get him rehydrated and by Wednesday his blood numbers for various toxins normally screened by the kidneys were back in range (from 8x normal down to about 1.5x normal.) However, whatever caused this, believed to be kidney stone(s) or an infection blocking kidney operation, caused enough permanent damage that his remaining kidney function was less than marginal. Which led to some further complications as well.

At which point the vet and I decided that putting him down was the best option at this point. He was warm and not in pain.

He had a very good run, and he will be missed.

At this point there are no plans for getting replacement Overlords until after the holiday travels are completed.

I actually don't think demographics was alone in dooming the GOP presidential run. I think for a long time, the GOP message to its base was accepted as some sort of scientific economic gospel in that if we just let the rich keep more of their money and deregulate Wall Street, etc (let them do what they want how they want) that eventually, these "job creators" will use the money they kept and did not gove to the evil govt to give you working stiff white folks (good paying) jobs.

This trickle down will happen any minute now..just wait for it....and it never did. When the Great Recession hit under Bush, who deregulated and de-taxed the rich like never before suddenly, many people (some who are not even full Republicans but bought the less tax/less govt = jobs theory) realized they worshipped at the altar of a false ideological god.

Romney ran on a GOP greatest hits political message of the past (trickle down economics) and for the first time since the Reagan era introduced the concept the message was not accepted and will be less accepted as time goes forward. In fact, when Romney tried to link the term "trickle down" to Obama's vision of govt "trickle down govt" I knew right there and then the term and the ideology behind it was poisoned even for its base and the GOP knew it but was trying to re-brand it but could not figure out how to do it yet.

So it turns out that after all the condemnations and repudiations, the National Republican Senatorial Committee really did put big money behind Rep. Todd Akin’s (R) Missouri Senate bid.

Late Thursday night, USA Today reported the NRSC “pumped $760,000 into the Show-Me State” in the closing days of the Senate contest. That fits with late October speculation about the NRSC’s actions. The NRSC money went to the Missouri Republican Party’s federal campaign committee in two installments of $360,000 and $400,000 each, on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2, USA Today reported:

Because of the filing schedule for the FEC, those transactions on Akin’s behalf did not have to be publicly disclosed until after the election. At the time, the group refused to comment on the rumors it was helping Akin despite blanket condemnations and refusals to assist from NRSC and other establishment GOP leadership.

Many actors/ singers/ entertainers give back HUGE

I remember as a kid back in the 50's and 60's seeing the Bob Hope specials where he and a troupe of Hollywood friends would give up their own at home holiday to be with the troops, no matter where they were

That type of tradition continues with todays entertainers
