Fake Wingnut Outrage of the Day: “Anti-American Rapper Psy”

Pearl clutching for fun and profit
Wingnuts • Views: 37,661

Well, it’s Monday, which means it’s time for another huge outburst of hatred and anger from the weird world of wingnuts. Like any other day.

This time it’s kicked off by the always enraged breitbart.com, where blogger Christian Toto is clutching his pearls over South Korean pop star Psy (of “Gangnam Style” fame) and his appearance at the “Christmas in Washington” concert: OBAMA, BIDEN COZY UP TO ANTI-AMERICAN RAPPER PSY.

The right wing started freaking out when it emerged that Psy had once performed a song with some very harsh words for Americans, following an incident in which two South Korean schoolgirls were killed by an armored vehicle driven by American soldiers during a training exercise.

As reported by Buzzfeed, Psy issued a pretty classy and seemingly sincere apology for that performance: Psy Allegedly Rapped ‘Kill Those Fucking Yankees’ in 2004.

“As a proud South Korean who was educated in the United States and lived there for a very significant part of my life, I understand the sacrifices American servicemen and women have made to protect freedom and democracy in my country and around the world. The song in question — from eight years ago — was part of a deeply emotional reaction to the war in Iraq and the killing of two innocent Korean civilians that was part of the overall antiwar sentiment shared by others around the world at that time,” the statement read. “While I’m grateful for the freedom to express one’s self I’ve learned there are limits to what language is appropriate and I’m deeply sorry for how these lyrics could be interpreted. I will forever be sorry for any pain I have caused anyone by those words.

“I have been honored to perform in front of American soldiers in recent months — including an appearance on the Jay Leno show specifically for them — and I hope they and all Americans can accept my apology,” the statement concluded. “While it’s important we express our opinions, I deeply regret the inflammatory and inappropriate language I used to do so. In my music I try to give people a release, a reason to smile. I have learned that though music, our universal language we can all come together as a culture of humanity and I hope that you will accept my apology.”

But of course, on Wingnut Planet no apologies are ever accepted unless they’re from right wingers who get caught soliciting sex in airport bathrooms. And if Joe Biden appears in a photo with Psy, and President Obama attends the show, that’s all the Breitbrats need to kick off hundreds of nasty racist comments from their knuckle-dragging audience.

This time, I’ll only quote one of these sick freaks, because it pretty much sums up the breitbart.com zeitgeist:

Just think, how cozy Obama could be with Psy if Psy was a MuSLIME

Just think!

It's not like any country musician has advocated killing foreigners, or any conservative politicians have ever appeared with anyone who has insinuated that we may need to have a violent overthrow of the government if they don't get what they want.

You would think that'd make anyone get pissed off, particularly since the soldiers received no appreciable discipline.

Wingnuts can't understand any modern culture, therefore, it must be socialism, satanic and going to take their guns away.

Of course, Psy is proof of the sekrit, Muslim, Kenyan, Manchurian plot to take over the the world.

Complexity
It has been theorized by Robert Wright in his book Nonzero: The Logic of Human Destiny, that society becomes increasingly non-zero-sum as it becomes more complex, specialized, and interdependent. As former US President Bill Clinton states:

The more complex societies get and the more complex the networks of interdependence within and beyond community and national borders get, the more people are forced in their own interests to find non-zero-sum solutions. That is, win–win solutions instead of win–lose solutions.... Because we find as our interdependence increases that, on the whole, we do better when other people do better as well — so we have to find ways that we can all win, we have to accommodate each other....

—Bill Clinton, Wired interview, December 2000.[3]

Uh, when one acts, sings, raps, writes books or songs you're "going into character." So when Johnny Cash sang about shooting his wife and snorting cocaine he wasn't advocating shooting your wife. This happens countless of times. This seems to be something that wingnuts may not understand. Bozos.

This sucks a couple ways. First the apology should be fine to accept with grace. Past that, I have been extolled to never ever pay to see a movie with Shaun Penn, a truly great American actor whose opinions just make me want to hurl. Well, the next movie that looks appealing to me could easily include him. During the election some musicians went all in for Romney. Again, in terms of their music, if I like it I'll buy it. If I don't then my money stays with me.

Psy has a pop style that I'll likely never ever buy. Rest assured that's all about my taste in music not his choice of words.

Just so you know, there is no word in Korean for "fucking" and this is simply an incendiary mistranslation.

They use numbers and abbreviations such as "AC" to fill the void. Neither of these substitutions is in the Korean version.

As for the outrage: thank you come again and move along to something real. This is character assassination and yet another wingnut attack by proxy.

35 philosophus invidius  Mon, Dec 10, 2012 2:36:52pm

Just to be clear, those lyrics are not criticisms of US foreign policy and are not just "harsh words." They are a call for the slow and painful death Americans, both civilian and military.

I don't recall any US country singers calling for anything as awful as a "slow and painful death" of Iraqi soldiers--let alone their children. But suppose there was, and then suppose that there was a huge backlash that threatened his career. Then he apologizes. What would we think of such an apology?

In my view, the White House should have found a way dissociated itself from this guy.

New Zealand's 'driving dogs' pass their test

A pair of highly trained dogs from New Zealand have passed their doggie driving test, guiding a modified car along a race track on live television.

In a project aimed at increasing pet adoptions from animal shelters, a group of cross-breed rescue dogs from Auckland were taught to drive a car - steering, pedals and all - to show the potential of unwanted canines.

Footage of the motorised mutts learning their skills has proved an Internet sensation, but their ultimate test came when the two best performers, Monty and Porter, were put through their paces on national television.

Sore Loser Allen West: My Opponent Only Won Because He Cheated

In an exit befitting his outspoken, controversial two years in Congress, Rep. Allen West (R-FL) said that he only lost his re-election because his opponent cheated.

West lost narrowly to Democratic up-and-comer Patrick Murphy last month, but refused to concede for weeks, demanding a recount of ballots in St. Lucie County. Only after a re-tabulation slightly increased Murphy’s lead did West finally accept defeat just before Thanksgiving.

However, the Tea Party congressman appears to be handling the loss acrimoniously. Appearing on Mark Levin’s radio show last Thursday, West accused Murphy of only winning by breaking the rules. “I’m not going away just because of a congressional race where he seems to have to cheat to beat me,” said West. He did not specify precisely how Murphy supposedly cheated.

Dick Morris, Con Artist

In today's political universe there may be no pundit more ridiculous than Dick Morris, who never hesitates to offer a prediction and is almost always wrong. Like many of his brethren, Morris has found that opportunities for income are not restricted to a Fox contract and best-selling "books." While Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Bill O'Reilly offer "premium" content on their web sites you can pay for (if the four or so hours a day of their television and radio shows aren't enough for you), Morris decided this year that the fervid desire that 80-year-old angry white guy shaking his fist at the television screen has to get rid of Barack Obama was a business opportunity that couldn't be passed up. What if you could say to that angry old man, "Give me your money, and I'll use it to defeat Obama," but then you actually, you know, kept the money for yourself? It might require a little creative accounting, but Morris was up to the task. Ben Dimiero and Eric Hananoki of Media Matters report:

According to FEC data released December 6, Morris' Super PAC for America paid conservative news outlet Newsmax Media roughly $1.7 million for "fundraising" in October and November. A significant portion of the super PAC's money likely went to renting Morris' own email list, which is operated by Newsmax Media.

A Media Matters review found that in the month before the election, Morris sent at least 21 emails to his mailing list featuring fundraising pitches that were "paid for by Super PAC for America." Super PAC also "paid for" at least 25 emails to Newsmax.com's main email list during the same period.

Perhaps there's a more innocent explanation for all this, but the way it looks is that 1) People (should we call them "marks"?) donate money to Morris' super PAC; 2) he pays that money to Newsmax for "fundraising"; then 3) Newsmax turns around and pays the money back to Morris, for access to his list of donors. Perhaps Newsmax takes a cut, or perhaps the list is their cut, because these people can then become marks for all kinds of future scams.

Shades of Rodney King?

A US soldier who drove over two South Korean girls with a military vehicle has been cleared by a US military court.

Sergeant Mark Walker, who was driving the 50-tonne armoured vehicle when the incident happened in June, was found not guilty of negligent homicide.

His colleague and the vehicle's navigator and commander, Sergeant Fernando Nino, was cleared of similar charges on Wednesday.

The case, and the acquittals, have caused angry protests in South Korea and fanned anti-American sentiment - with opposition growing to the presence of 37,000 US troops stationed in South Korea to counter threats from the Communist North.

75 Holidays are Family Fun Time  Mon, Dec 10, 2012 3:32:20pm

The incident happened in 2002, not 2004. And Psy was not the only one to sing in protest.

"Fucking USA" is a protest song written by South Korean singer and activist Yoon Min-suk. Strongly anti-US foreign policy and anti-Bush, the song was written in 2002 at a time when, following the Apolo Ohno Olympic controversy and an accident in which two Korean middle school students were killed under the wheels of a U.S. Army vehicle; anti-American sentiment in South Korea reached its record high levels.[42]

I know. I was just looking at some of them. I can not say how happy I am to see them...

Back in the days when I was just a little lizard, I was a very lone voice in the wilderness on the issue. It is marvelous to see how many people have looked into the science.

In my defense though, I've been awful busy doing actual research into climate lately, and I don't have a lot of time to post.

Two people were killed. It's difficult not to find any negligence. Geez if you hit someone and only cause property damage in this county, it is normally accompanied by a ticket for a moving violation (failure to slow speed, whatever).

Dark, also see Charles' words at the top of the thread:

The right wing started freaking out when it emerged that Psy had once performed a song with some very harsh words for Americans, following an incident in which two South Korean schoolgirls were killed by an armored vehicle driven by American soldiers during a training exercise.

As reported by Buzzfeed, Psy issued a pretty classy and seemingly sincere apology for that performance: Psy Allegedly Rapped ‘Kill Those Fucking Yankees’ in 2004.

re: #61 philosophus invidius

OK, let's forgive him. But if some people decide that they can't forgive him, that seems to be their right too. I don't think that the White House invite respects that right sufficiently.

Wait, so long as there's anybody who can't forgive him the White House isn't respecting their rights?

I think this is similar to the case of Kramer from Seinfeld. He apologized, but if some people feel that his words cannot be forgiven, then that is their right.

Richard's apology was rambling, poorly worded and self defeating. In it he called his victims a couple of "afro-americans," said he'd lost his temper but didn't really talk about what he'd learned about himself. In his rage he singled out individuals and attacked them on the basis of their race, betraying a deep seated personal animus. Richard's apology was pro forma, and smacked of insincerity. He was sorry he said it in public, not that he'd thought it.

Psy attacked the US because of US policy and the specific actions of US soldiers on South Korean soil. Actions that because of immunity agreements the US military was then able to absolve them of. This is the same issue that has made us so unwelcome in Okinawa, finalized our departure from Iraq and will soon do the same in Afghanistan. Psy's apology on the other hand seems deeply genuine, thought out and describes in detail the lessons the incident has taught him and how he's worked to change his thinking.

131 philosophus invidius  Mon, Dec 10, 2012 4:15:20pm

re: #130 goddamnedfrank

I didn't say that so long as anybody can't forgive him, the White House isn't respecting their rights. People can hold unreasonable grudges.

OK, I don't recall the specifics of Kramer's apology, so maybe the analogy is bad. But I was imagining that he made a sincere apology.

Then again, Psy said that he was sorry about how his the lyrics "could be interpreted."

re: #78 Holidays are Family Fun Time

gwangung is right. It isn't about how WE FEEL. It's not about us. Two families lost their daughters. IT'S ABOUT THEM.

I remember an argument that went something like this:

"When people call for indiscriminately killing Palestinians, they do so because they are angry about terrorist attacks on Israelis, and we therefore should not judge them. They are just letting off steam. It is about the victims and not about the sensitivities of the people who might be offended by such angry words."

Of course it is true that this kind "letting off steam" is a very minor sin compared to the actual terror attack that they were "venting" about. But the argument is still a bad one. We shouldn't excuse calls for torture or for indiscriminate killing based on this kind of context.

I would be inclined to forgive someone who, in a calmer moment, apologized for such words. But I wouldn't think that others who could not forgive him would be unreasonable, particularly those who were the object of those calls for murderous vengeance.

168 darthstar  Mon, Dec 10, 2012 4:59:05pm

Okay...gotta run. My nephew is picking me up and taking me to the restaurant as I'm meeting my wife there and this way I can be designated driver without leaving one car 20 miles from home...Yeah, that's how I roll.

If I had more days off in a row, you'd be on (if the invite was legit)!

BUT,, I'd have to fly out one day, night ski, ski the next day and night, then fly back the next day!!

(hmmmm,,, on 2nd thought ,,,,,,)

WHATTHEFUCK? I won't kill you, but the tuna will. Actually, if it was kept in a stable temp (68-80 range), it should be fine. But put some reading material by the toilet...you might be there a while.

Option key- comma opens your browser settings on a Mac. Then search for the cookies you want to delete (I delete NYTIMES all the fucking time to avoid their paywall).

I miss my MacBook Pro - that's the worst part of losing a job...giving up a top end laptop.

From the Hollywood Reporter and elsewhere:

"Kill those fucking Yankees who have been torturing Iraqi captives
Kill those fucking Yankees who ordered them to torture
Kill their daughters, mothers, daughters-in-law and fathers
Kill them all slowly and painfully"

I like the part about killing their daughters, mothers, daughters in law...slowly and painfully. It shows he is sensitive to issues of gender equity and doesn't want anyone to be left out.

He is not wild about the US presence on South Korean soil. Personally, I think there should be a vote....paid for by the United States. If a majority votes that we leave.....then we leave. If the folks up north decide to invade or worse (yes, there is worse), we will write an angry letter on their behalf (a la Team America , World Police).
