Steve King: I Have No Idea What Happened in Benghazi but It’s Worse Than Watergate

The Republican clown car
Wingnuts • Views: 38,348

Iowa Republican caveman Steve King weighed in the Benghazi fake scandal today; he says he has no idea what took place, or who did what, but he does know it’s 10 times worse than Watergate and Iran-Contra put together.

‘I believe that it’s a lot bigger than Watergate, and if you link Watergate and Iran-Contra together and multiply it times maybe 10 or so, you’re going to get in the zone where Benghazi is,’ Mr. King said. ‘I don’t think the public has any idea, and I tell you, I don’t either, of the chronology of the events — what took place, and who was where doing what and why. And all the way down through — we still haven’t seen an autopsy report on the ambassador yet. Simple questions that you would ask in the first 24 hours have not been asked yet.’

There you have it — a clear statement of the utter derangement of the GOP. This isn’t government, it’s a pathetic circus, and Steve King is one of the clowns.

Why is no one asking questions about Steve King's hooker scandal?

I haven't heard any news about any hookers, but that shouldn't stop us from asking questions.

Assad losing Syria war, Russia admits for first time

One of Syria's key allies admitted for the first time on Thursday that the Assad regime was losing the ground war, as rebels told the Guardian they were occupying more and more territory and besieging government troops in many parts of the country.

The deputy foreign minister of Russia – which has given Bashar al-Assad unstinting diplomatic and military support - said the regime faced possible defeat to the rebels, saying with unusual candour: "One must look facts in the face."

Mikhail Bogdanov said: "The tendency is that the regime and government of Syria is losing more and more control, and more and more territory. Unfortunately, the victory of the Syrian opposition cannot be ruled out."

It's to keep folks distracted while the GOP caves in and passes the middle-class tax cuts before month's end. Keep the wingnuts interested in the shiny thing long enough so that they get bored right about the time we start watching the debt limit showdown.

GOP Threatens To Hold Disaster Relief Hostage To Spending Cuts — Again

A day after Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ) called disaster relief for Hurricane Sandy “wasteful spending,” Reps. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Steve King (R-IA), Raul Labrador (R-ID), and Jeff Landry (R-LA), all from the more conservative wing of the House GOP, told The Hill that they will demand offsets for disaster spending:

Rep. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), who sits on the Appropriations Committee, said she will need to see offsets on Wednesday as did Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho).

“We have these emergencies every year and we should prepare for that in our budget,” Labrador said.

“No pun intended, we should have a rainy day fund,” Rep. Jeff Landry (R-La.) said.

After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, then-House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) rebuked conservative members of his caucus for demanding spending cuts for disaster relief. “It is right to borrow to pay for it,” he said. But since the GOP took over the House in 2010, it has routinely made such demands. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) promised to block disaster funding in the wake of tornadoes that devastated Missouri, an earthquake that hit his own state, and Hurricane Irene.

Iowa and Louisiana GOP Representatives. States that never get natural disasters.

Oh wait.

Historic flooding and massive death tolls and carnage from Katrina and massive flooding and droughts on a periodic basis hit Iowa with damaging and lasting effects.

They're first up to secure aid when it helps them, but when NY and NJ (which historically pay more to the feds than they get back) need assistance, these guys are out there claiming fiscal responsibility dictates tying the aid to setoffs elsewhere? Really? What's the cost of doing nothing - it's far greater, because it is lost revenues from the thousands of businesses impacted by the damage, and families whose lives have been upended by the damage done to the states and their respective infrastructure systems.

And Wyoming and Idaho, you too have seen drought effects and sought aid. Don't think that we aren't paying attention.

We are. And I'm not amused.

Hutcherson said that if evangelical leaders like Warren and Americans do not begin to denounce homosexuality more fervently then God is going to get “sick and tired of America” and “really turn loose judgment on us.” LaBarbera added that Morgan is “obsessed” with homosexuality and that it is a religious “sacrament” to him, and Hutcherson explained that Morgan and others “promote homosexuality” and seek to “destroy God’s plan.”

House GOP still perfectly okay with rape

Eighty percent of Native American rape survivors were attacked by non-Indians, and these crimes are currently beyond the reach of tribal authorities. Meanwhile, federal officials have the theoretical power to prosecute sexual assaults on reservations, but they lack the resources to do so. The result is that many abusers quickly learn they are free to attack women without consequence:

“We have serial rapists on the reservation — that are non-Indian — because they know they can get away with it,” said Charon Asetoyer, executive director of the Native American Women’s Health Education Resource Center in Lake Andes, S.D. “Many of these cases just get dropped. Nothing happens. And they know they’re free to hurt again.” . . .

Overall, American Indians are two and a half times likelier to be victims of violent crime than the general population, according to the Department of Justice. But a 2010 report by the General Accounting Office found that there is an unusually high rate of refusals to prosecute by U.S. attorneys, who “declined to prosecute 46 percent of assault matters and 67 percent of sexual abuse and related matters.” The report noted that violent crimes actually had a higher rate of declination, possibly because the evidence was harder to come by.

A major step towards solving this problem is the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act, which passed the Senate with strong bipartisan support last April. Among other things, this bill would restore tribal authorities’ ability to prosecute non-Indians who commit domestic violence against the members of their tribe. According to the Census Bureau, 39 percent of Native women are subject to domestic violence at least once. Many of these incidents involve rape.

In the House several top Republicans, including members of the House Leadership, proposed a compromise bill that would extend these protections to Native domestic violence victims while allowing defendants to remove their case to federal court. Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), however, reportedly refuses to accept any protections for Native women that would expand tribal jurisdiction. As a result, there is a very real danger that Cantor will kill the bill by simply waiting out the clock until the new Congress is sworn in.
