The Fox News/Republican Party witch hunt against Susan Rice, over a completely phony trumped-up scandal, has succeeded: EXCLUSIVE: Susan Rice Drops Out of Running for Secretary of State; Saddened by Partisan Politics.

Embattled U.N. envoy Susan Rice is dropping out of the running to be the next secretary of state after months of criticism over her Benghazi comments, she told NBC News on Thursday.

“If nominated, I am now convinced that the confirmation process would be lengthy, disruptive and costly - to you and to our most pressing national and international priorities,” Rice wrote in a letter to President Obama, saying she’s saddened by the partisan politics surrounding her prospects.

“That trade-off is simply not worth it to our country…Therefore, I respectfully request that you no longer consider my candidacy at this time,” she wrote in the letter obtained by NBC News.

Update: I don’t think it was Republican opposition to her over Benghazi that forced her out. Obama signaled repeatedly that he was prepared to stand by her on that; lefty media churned out plenty of “I don’t get what the big deal is!!!” pieces in her defense over the last month too. Liberals would have lined up behind her on Libya with plenty of demagoguery about racism and sexism to help push her through. I think it was the other stuff that convinced her or the White House or both that this wasn’t worth the headaches — the endless whispering about her undiplomatic temperament, the conflict-of-interest concerns about her investments in companies behind the Keystone pipeline, and the criticism of her alleged “sympathy” for some of Africa’s tyrants. If her confirmation had been a pure referendum on Benghazi, Senate Democrats probably would have gone to bat for her. But if it’s not a pure referendum, if it’s Benghazi plus three or four other weak spots, then maybe a handful would defect and suddenly O’s looking at a major humiliation to start his second term.

Would be a strategic mistake. In the end, the Secretary of State doesn't make policy but instead is part of the larger foreign policy of the Whitehouse. There are plenty of candidates who would make for a good secretary. Sacrificing Kerry for a 4 year stint as SoS wouldn't make sense. Kerry is only 69. This would also mean that Mass could lose Kerry for good. Remember that Mass also went Republican before with Scott Brown.

Also,

I was wrong about some things...

1. I have not been posting here nearly as much as I used to and I truly had no idea about some of the shenanigans going on.

For example, I had no idea that Rochi was linking to fjordman or the EI had some list of enemies of free - speech. I really didn't.

I am very sorry for unwittingly stepping into a minefield. I had much different explosives to discuss.

I walked blindly into a hornet's nest. I had hoped that was clear.

2. OF course I do not support freaks like fjordman. And Pat Condell got more than a little too full of himself (to say the least). I haven't seen one of his youtube things in about three years, so if he got worse, I would not be surprised, but I really don't know.

3. Given that, I can see how people got very cranky and misunderstood what I was going for - if that is all there is to it. And for some, I am certain, that is indeed the case. However, it still gets out of hand even when things like the salient points of the post and its intent are plain as day. For others, it very clearly was magical balance fairies and for yet others it was just purposefully trolling.

4. But then again that is sort of the point within the point. That part I was not wrong about.

5. There used to be a point here where people could make a serious post full of serious points. People knew what the serious points were, and they knew what the intent of the post was. It was plain as day. They were not dragged down into a muck of BS pertaining to every extraneous thing other than the points - like pearl clutching over something that might be construed as "too broad" when the meaning was plain, or pearl clutching over the potential other meanings of given word when the meaning was plain.

6. I am not flouncing. I am currently writing about a certain trend in simply petty crap that only seems to have gotten worse. What is wrong with actually discussing the meat of a post?

7. I am sure many will go on a little pearl clutch about this "being all about me." Actually not. It is about the tenor of the posts in general.

This is all true, but sometimes you just do the right thing. Kerry gave Obama a huge opportunity as Keynote speaker at the DNC in '04. He supported him for president. Maybe Kerry would be ready to retire in 4 years anyway.
Also it would really piss off the swiftboaters.

It maybe a phony witch hunt but it was a successful one, sadly.

The problem is that the GOP sees this as some sort of victory but she wasn't nominated for this position and thus this was not a GOP victory against Obama.

Because of the FOX news talking heads, the GOP was deprived of a victory (if you want to get Machiavellian about this) that would have been theirs if she was nominated and then grilled and defeated in the nomination process.

But because FOX could not wait to get out there on this outrage of the moment (because outrage = old people ratings) the GOP shot their load early on this.

Now a human rights and multilateral affairs director in Obama's National Security Council, Power "could be his next Secretary of State or National Security Adviser," says Cathy Hayes at Irish Central. Power is an expert on, and staunch critic, of genocide, and she is considered a key architect of Obama's Libya intervention. But remember, some conservatives and Israel proponents don't like Power because they consider her pro-Palestinian.

5. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.)
Our favorite dark horse candidate is Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress and the first black congressman from Minnesota, says Global Grind. House GOP Secretly Authorized $500,000 To Defend Unconstitutional Anti-Gay Law

It has come to light that House Administration Committee Chairman Dan Lungren (R-CA) secretly approved a $500,000 increase to a contract with a private law firm to defend the unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in federal court. While the increase was approved in September, neither the public nor the Democratic House minority was informed until this week, Roll Call reports.

The contract now authorizes Bancroft PLLC and former Solicitor General Paul Clement (R) to spend up to $2 million in to defend DOMA — the second increase to what was originally a $1 million cap. The U.S. Department of Justice stopped defending the 1996 law in February 2011 after determining the law to be in conflict with the U.S. Constittuion.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) denounced the increased expense in a statement:

It’s bad enough that Speaker Boehner and House Republicans are wasting taxpayer dollars to defend the indefensible Defense of Marriage Act – and losing in every case. Now, they have reached a new low – signing a secret contract to spend more public money on their legal boondoggle without informing Democrats. Their actions are simply unconscionable; their decisions are utterly irresponsible.

Telling the GOP the debt ceiling is irrelevant because of the 14th amendment, combined with a few juicy nominations (especially if SCOTUS is involved) ought to do it.

You are probably right but the timing of the AF launch was rather nicely near the launch window for the DPRK device. It crossed my mind that might not be a coincidence. Plus grabbing anything tumbling is a huge challenge.

But in theory, if an out of control sat in low orbit needed to be taken care of that is the bird for it. I would hope the necessity would take care of the legality.

If the DPRK just wanted to muck up low orbit with debris now they apparently could. A cargo of copper bb's could really screw things up is that theory is correct that Charles linked. "Area denial"=low orbit.

They could. Such a move would make then de facto active enemies of civilization, and I have no doubts that the regime would see a swift end. I suspect Lil' Kim runs everything by the Chinese first, and that they'd tell him they'd nuke him themselves if he pulled something like that.

Which I think would be the right level of force, frankly. The human impact of merely weather satellites, never mind everything else space-borne, is nearly incalculable.

A guard at a juvenile prison found herself behind bars this week after she was caught on tape battering a teenage detainee.

Although the encounter got Shannon Linn Abbott arrested, it didn’t get her fired. The 33-year-old bailed out and was back on the job right afterward and supervising children, to the extreme dismay of the Department of Juvenile Justice.

On Tuesday, a DJJ administrator formally asked the privately managed youth prison’s director to remove the guard from all access to children.

“It is our expectation, at the very least, that this staff member will have no contact with youth in any of our programs,” wrote Laura K. Moneyham, a DJJ assistant secretary.

Michigan GOP reinstates Union busting law voted down by ballot initiative in November

Michigan’s House Republicans today passed a new version of the “emergency manager” law that voters repealed via ballot referendum in November. The initial version gave broader powers to state-appointed emergency managers who oversee townships that are struggling financially.

Among those powers was the ability to void union contracts and labor agreements. The new version, introduced by state Rep. Al Pscholka (R), makes small changes but still includes the provision granting the manager authority over labor contracts, as the Detroit Free Press reports:

The bill says an emergency manager will have the power to undertake “the modification, rejection, termination and renegotiation of contracts.”

The ability for an emergency manager to break or terminate collective bargaining agreements under certain circumstances was one of the most controversial aspects of PA 4.

But Pscholka said a key difference is that the new bill “gives a choice to local officials … on how to keep their heads above water.”

By the way, there's a higher-resolution video of the Bill O'Reilly segment now at Fox, and it really does look like Crowder shoved the union protester, from behind. Either Crowder or someone right next to him knocked the guy to the ground, and it was pretty clear that the guy thought it was Crowder. Went right for him.

Check the clip starting at about 1:32. The shove happens at about 1:45, and Crowder's extended arm is clearly visible although you don't see the actual contact.

Speaking strictly from probability, I would be very surprised if the orbits are compatible. We'd have to know the DPRK's expected payload weight, launch direction, and desired altitude to unlikely precision, and we'd also have to assume they actually managed to hit those targets.

By the way, there's a higher-resolution video of the Bill O'Reilly segment now at Fox, and it really does look like Crowder shoved the union protester, from behind. Either Crowder or someone right next to him knocked the guy to the ground, and it was pretty clear that the guy thought it was Crowder. Went right for him.

Check the clip starting at about 1:32. The shove happens at about 1:45, and Crowder's extended arm is clearly visible although you don't see the actual contact.

Health care providers could use a “moral objection” or “matter of conscience” standard to refuse service to patients under a bill passed by the state Senate today.

By a 26-12 vote, the Senate approved the bill, which would allow health care providers -- as a matter of conscience -- to decline services they object to. It also would allow employers to refuse to pay for services for their employees that “violated the payer's conscience."

The state already has a conscientious objection clause for abortion services, but the new law also could give the green light to doctors to refuse to write birth control prescriptions and opens the door to a refusal of service for all sorts of ailments, said state Sen. Roger Kahn, R-Saginaw.

Kahn, a cardiologist who was the only Republican to join most of the Democrats to vote against the bill, said it shouldn’t be up to health care providers to refuse service based on their own moral beliefs.

“I don’t know how this doesn’t violate the oath I took, when I promised to resuscitate someone with TB or treat someone with AIDS,” he said.

I saw that. Doesn't really change my opinion much. If they had a permit for the space or had the right to have the tent there then I suppose they probably have the right to stop people from tearing it down. Although it doesn't look like the guy who was pushed was messing with the tent and it doesn't appear to me that Crowder was the one who pushed him. Who pushed him and why? I have no idea.

I think a lot of people get confused between "I have a right to do this" and "It's understandable if I do this."

If someone pushed me at a bar, and I push him back, I'm not going to get in trouble for it even though I don't have the 'right' to do it. He already violated my rights, he clearly provoked it, and we have room for interpretation and circumstance in the law. That doesn't mean the law is okaying shoving people back-- just like it's not okay for this guy to get up and start swinging just because he's been pushed to the ground. Self-defense is allowed, but self-defense doesn't mean just tusslin'.

This is a horrible, horrible piece of legislation. From what I can see, there is no criteria in place as to what would constitute a proper "moral objection". For example, you could very well see cases where pregnant women were denied care because she was unmarried, employers having clauses written into their health plans stating that STDs would not be covered, or even worse, denial of services to children of mixed-race couples simply because they think that miscegenation is immoral.

Today I had the San Diego it's raining! Raining! morning. Fucking treacherous drive into work. Roads flooded, windshield washers at full blast, still couldn't see. Semis blowing spray over you . It was cray cray.

Funny the way home (no rain) people were hauling ass, no jam, probably because everyone was not going to repeat the morning. No way no how.

Not only that but how does one "offer money for info leading to arrest." How does that work? You collect money for the cops? It's a freaking scam. You file charges and give the cops a copy of the video and the guys name. It's a scam like Lee Stranahan taking money from people for imaginary documentaries. They're a bunch of lowlifes.

I think these idiots are really damaging their credibility, even further. Sure, a lot of right wingers don't care about the truth, but notice that the main news channels pretty much ignored the whole Crowder punch story. They know better than to trust a third-string Breitbart clown, especially when his video "evidence" is so obviously edited. The most common reaction I saw on Twitter to this story when it broke was extreme skepticism, because the source was a laughably obvious right wing operative.

And now that the New York Times had a "blog" post about it, this last stunt is definitely not going to improve that negative image. The right wing news sites have become a total joke.

Andrew Breitbart was a shrill loud mouthed clown. Since his death, a lot of his dorky followers have tried to emulate his style. The end result is that they come off as bad caricatures of Andrew and Chowderhead is an example of that.

While I was running around this afternoon and heard the news about Ms. Rice I was listening to I think the national NPR broadcast on my local public radio station.

What struck me right away was not the news itself but how it was reported. The news reader/host had on an otherwise obscure "expert" who tried to point out that there were problems with Ms. Rice because of the US (non)response in Syria, and "because of Benghazi".

I was expecting the news host to then ask what exactly there was about "Benghazi" that disqualified Ms. Rice, but no, the "news" person just accepted lock stock and barrel what the "expert" said, even though said expert did not expound on what the Benghazi claims was.

It was just another example of how lame "news" reporting has become. The bar is set really low.

Maybe a sadder insight is that most Americans really don't care who is the ambassador to the UN, cannot name that person, and probably can't name more than one Secretary of State. Nor do they care.

Does that really matter?

Is it true that most societies are run by a small group of highly interested parties, and most people in the larger society just go along for the ride?

I spend most of my spring/summers with some conservative Wisconsin folks(my son plays baseball) and pretty much all of them would have no problem taking a swat at Crowder. Especially while he's acting like such a jackass.
