19 Right Wing “Anything but the Gun” Excuses (Updated - Now With More Satan)

Let us count the ways
Wingnuts • Views: 30,052

Here’s a list of the scapegoats and excuses we’ve heard so far in the ongoing pro-gun noise machine’s efforts to blame gun violence and the Newtown school massacre on absolutely everything but the ready availability of millions of weapons like the Bushmaster AR-15 style assault rifle used by Adam Lanza.

(All excuses taken from actual right wing blog posts, web articles, and radio interviews.)

  1. Not enough God in schools.
  2. Not enough guns in schools.
  3. Not enough manly men in schools.
  4. Too many womenfolk in schools.
  5. Not enough children with guns.
  6. Not enough children trained to carry out human wave attacks.
  7. Satan.
  8. Autism.
  9. Asperger’s Syndrome.
  10. Mental illness.
  11. Video games.
  12. Quentin Tarantino.
  13. Jon Stewart.
  14. Abortion pills.
  15. Gay marriage.
  16. Atheists.
  17. LIBOR.
  18. The theory of evolution.
  19. Swedish death metal. (OK, kidding on that one.)

I’m sure you can come up with some others.

I've spent a lot of time on the net this weekend reading lots of sites of all types. I'm amazed what I read. Even the comments on big sites like CNN got freaking ugly. I saw a face of America during one of the worst tragedies.

Actual post from a wingnut to contribute more blame:

Most School shooters were on anti-depressants.

Most School Shooters smoked Cannabis.

The latest shooter is from a broken home (where is the male role model!).

Reports said Lanza was a Goth (a death celebration cult).

Now an argument for banning guns would have more credibility if you all
admitted your Liberal/ left society is so mentally fucked up that you have to
ban guns!

So add "anti-depressants", pot, sluts and Goths.

re: #32 Mich-again

In a friendly debate with a GOP co-worker today I told him I do not think it is possible to truly secure a weapon in your house, period. If a criminal was standing there with a knife holding your kid or wife hostage screaming at you to open the safe, you'd open it. He had to accept that as true..

I got to listen to a Loud Howard co-worker's legal theory on the Death Penalty today, after he expressed support for arming teachers to the teeth. Apparently the downside of an untrained, under-gunned teacher getting into a shootout inside a crowded school was lost on him. "Well if you're going to shoot it down with an extreme example..." he says. What? Fucking good sense is extreme now?

Anyway, his Death Penalty theory, in short: kill anybody who looks guilty to save taxpayer money, preferably with an assembly line. I tried to point out that the threat of death wasn't exactly a deterrent to the Radical Loser types who go on spree killings, but I think he just wanted to tell everyone about how he wanted to kill people without due process.

Worse yet, when I expressed annoyance about this to my girlfriend - a Church-of-Christ-3-times-a-week, twice-on-Sunday "Christian" - she said that somebody caught in the act of a mass shooting wasn't entitled to due process or a trial, and should be executed on the spot. I pointed out that this was barbaric, un-American, against the rule of law, and extremely hypocritical, and she didn't care. She also didn't understand why it was hypocritical, but I wasn't going to get into an argument about religion... If she can't figure out what's hypocritical about a Jesus worshiper calling for execution without fair trial, and if she doesn't know that this Jesus character was supposed to have been a member of a people who essentially define themselves by establishment of justice, nothing I say is going to matter.

Oddly enough, the one person in the room who expressed agreement with me, that he wouldn't mind undergoing a background check or restrictions before owning a center-fire semi-auto, was the one guy in the room who had actually been in the Army in the 90s and had spent some time on the ground in Somalia and Haiti.

Sometimes, I don't think we're going to make it.

Out there the TV sucks and the best Net access I can find is DSL..When I checked out the house I had no cell phone bars..plenty of trees on the south side that I can have cut down for wood for the fireplace. People who don't think too deeply confuse issues, so she may be thinking that shooting them on the spot will save lifes, but that already happens if it will.

Aside from religious ignorance (which is a pre-requisite for attending her church; I've listened to her preacher's sermons online), she's pissed about this guy "killing babies". Fair enough. I tried laying out for her the idea that if caught, it would help everybody to pick the killer's brain apart down to the last nut and bolt to figure out his major malfunction, before deciding on a death penalty, but she just wanted him dead in her mind.

It's weird. In our lunch group I'm the guy that legally carries a gun, I'm the guy that owns an AR, I'm the Dirrrty Kuffar atheist, and you think I'd be the quick-trigger commando-wannabe killer in this scenario, but I'm just not. I've separated my emotions from the mechanics of these things and I'd rather think it through and do what's right, rather than what satisfies the Angry Monkey within.

re: #104 Pawn of the Oppressor

Why are you with her?

The two reactions to the shootings I despise the most:

1) Almost immediately posting pro-gun propaganda. I predicted this right after I heard about the shootings and sure enough...several FB friends were doing it within minutes or hours. One of them is a liberal atheist Native American, but on guns he is hardcore. I had a VERY strong reaction to the two pro-gun graphics he put up, telling him that although we agree on almost every other topic, I was pretty close to unfriending him so I didn't have to see that crap in my news feed. He took both posts down, good for him.

It's so hard to understand how anyone with a heart could come rushing out with the pro-gun arguments immediately after 20 children have been gunned down. Especially parents---mothers, with children, for God's sake? What is wrong with them?? It's like they've been brainwashed into thinking this kind of reaction is normal. To me it makes it hard to even think of them as human beings. It's more like they're soulless Terminators from the future.

The other reaction is the "we've taken God out of our schools" inanity. One email going around talks about Jesus welcoming all those children into heaven and then blaming the violence on "fools" and saying, "I'm taking back my nation...I'm taking back my schools!" (They had to say "fools" instead of "liberals" because liberals doesn't rhyme with schools, you see...)

Again, this is a sentiment expressed by nice people, who I like...which is why it's so difficult to see them expressing such incredibly stupid opinions. Again, it's like so many Americans have just been thoroughly programmed and brainwashed with all the standard canards and all they can do when things like this happen is spit them out with monotonous predictability. No original thinking, no reflection, nothing. Not even 6-7 year olds getting shot can shake them out of their stupor and make them think anything but "Don't blame the guns!" "More guns!" and "More God!"

I want us to replace the Fox News brain trauma victims on the Supreme court with real judges so that in 20 years you can still get birth control and don't consider Texaco a citizen.

Yeah, gun control. How about we outlaw bullets. People have the right to bear arms and hit each other over the head with them as much as they like. I don't care that much.

I kinda like chatting with these people. Stay cool, smile, ask them a few simple questions and just listen to them talk themselves into a pretzel. It doesn't take long. And then I give them my opposing take on things, Usually they are startled that someone is actually speaking up to refute them. Most of them have never had an actual conversation with a liberal before. Ha.

But when it comes to religious politics, she occasionally shows part of herself to be an ignorant, reactionary, stunningly hypocritical sheep. I will be surprised if anything useful in the way of gun control comes out of this. Perhaps the RW blowhards will expose themselves as the lunatics they are, but I doubt that enough people are paying attention for that to matter.

If I were advising Obama and the Dems, I'd recommend planting the notion in the media that since anything that can pass must be bi-partisan (pretty much true), and the GOP is the self appointed defender of the 2nd amendment, let them make the first proposals.

If the GOP response is "no changes needed" (or worse), that will be damaging. Much better for the Dems than getting lost in the weeds over another "assault weapon ban".

Former Arizona GOP Campaign Finance chairman, and recent candidate for governor Mike Harris.

American Journalist Blames Sandy Hook Killing Spree on Israel

On Tuesday, December 18th, an American journalist told Iranian Press TV that the shooting spree was a “revenge killing in the United States sponsored by Israel” in response for international support at the United Nations last month.

The journalist, Michael Harris, is the financial editor at Veterans Today a website known more for its anti-Semitic and anti-Israel conspiracy theories, than journalism of any kind.

During his interview with the Iranian media outlet, Harris, a one-time Republican gubernatorial candidate in Arizona, reported that “Israel has been operating death squads.”

Harris insisted that Israeli “revenge squads” have been killing innocent Americans since the Tuscon, Arizona, shooting in which Jewish congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head, but survived, while another six individuals were killed.

Not one to waste a good soapbox, Harris also insisted that the Israel somehow responsible for the shooting at a midnight showing of the latest Batman film in Aurora, Colorado, in which 12 people were killed and 58 injured.

“Zionist-controlled Hollywood” and the “Zionist-controlled news media” act as a “conduit to all this violence” in the United States that manifests itself in deadly shootings, added Harris.

Yeah. I'm in about my eighth month as a full-blown skeptic, anti-theist supernatural-denying atheist, after about six years of living as what you might call a pseudo-Jew. I'm still in the angry & frustrated stage, which is pretty common for newly discovered atheists, apparently; every day I find myself shocked and dismayed by some overheard nonsense at work, and I'm slowly learning how to moderate and express these things. I unfortunately don't have any natural gift for "debate" or calm discussion, I'm the kind of guy who would verbally stab you fifty times to make sure, when once was enough, which is why I just don't talk about certain things. It's not worth losing friends, or her, over Nonsense.

I see no need for uninvited evangelism from either side. If nobody tries to convert me, I will stay silent about my reasons for not believing, and generally be polite in public.

re 142 Trigger 2005:

Again, this is a sentiment expressed by nice people, who I like...which is why it's so difficult to see them expressing such incredibly stupid opinions. Again, it's like so many Americans have just been thoroughly programmed and brainwashed with all the standard canards and all they can do when things like this happen is spit them out with monotonous predictability. No original thinking, no reflection, nothing. Not even 6-7 year olds getting shot can shake them out of their stupor and make them think anything but "Don't blame the guns!" "More guns!" and "More God!"

I had some dumbass actually tag me in a few pictures of Ted the fucking moron Nugent on FB last Friday. classy huh. And yeah, the gun nuts rush to become the real victim was despicable, there was even a poster of an assortment of assault weapons with the caption.. "The 2nd Amendment.. By whatever means necessary." Police Begin Investigations Into Michigan Protest Incidents

State police spokesperson Shanon Banner confirmed to TPM that AFP activists and Crowder have officially reported the incidents to the police, kicking off investigations.

Crowder, who initially drew criticism from the state police when he declined to press charges for days after he was punched on camera, asked police Friday to look into the incident.

“As with any complaint, we will now initiate an investigation,” Banner told TPM...

...According to the state police, the AFP tent incident is now also a subject of investigation.

“The complaint is a report of stolen and damaged property belonging to a member of the group Americans for Prosperity,” Banner told TPM.

So when police get hundreds of witness statements saying that Crowder pushed the man to the ground before the punch was thrown then what?

And now a moment of seriousness. Earlier today I posted about how there was a security alert/lockdown at a school out in Scottsdale AZ because someone reported a guy in a long coat and a gun.

Turns out that one of my relatives was at the school, and while it turned out to be nothing, it was pretty scary for the kids and their parents for a bit.

Then, spoke with my folks, and one of the nurses that has been helping out said that her nieces/nephews were at Sandy Hook and made it out okay.

Do Armed Civilians Stop Mass Shooters? Actually, No.
Five cases commonly cited as a rationale for arming Americans don't stand up to scrutiny.

As I reported recently in our in-depth investigation, not one of the 62 mass shootings in the United States over the last 30 years has been stopped this way. More broadly, attempts by armed civilians to intervene in shooting rampages are rare—and are successful even more rarely. (Two people who tried it in recent years were gravely wounded or killed.) And law enforcement overwhelmingly hates the idea.

Those pesky facts haven't stopped the "arm America more!" crowd from pressing the argument with alleged examples of successful armed interventions. The problem is, the few examples they keep using—in which they depict plain old folks acting heroically and with definitive results—fall apart under scrutiny. Here are five of them and why they don't work:

Woman with sword arrested at Orlando mosque

The black woman, Dominique Eloi, was spotted on the the campus of the Leaders Preparatory School, which contains a mosque and day care center. When school employees asked what she was doing on the campus, Eloi was silent and pulled out her weapon.

“I have no idea who she is or why she chose to come here,” Iman Mohammed Musri of the Islamic Society of Central Florida told Click Orlando. “I tried to speak to her, but she didn’t respond to anything, she started speaking German.”

The private school was placed on lockdown. When police arrived, they witnessed Eloi exiting the mosque with her sword drawn.

She was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds, disrupting a school function and aggravated assault with a weapon. It is unclear why she was at the private Islamic school with a sword.

It seems the only thing that stops the shooters is running out of targets, or the cops showing up with equal or superior firepower.

The armed, trained people who have found themselves present at a quarterly Suburban Gotterdammerung have usually declined to engage a superior enemy and left the area ASAP, sometimes facilitating escape for others while doing so.

Fantasies about Dirty Harrying a loon with a rifle are just that... Fantasies. Nobody who's been in the shit or trained for being in it, would ever seriously suggest trying such a thing without huge advantages in cover and surprise. And those are matter of blind shit luck to begin with.

And it's becoming increasingly laughable as the shooters seem to be evolving (for lack of a better term) and equipping body armor before they go on their rampages. That actually should be another area of potential regulation, the ease civilians have in obtaining military-grade gear other than just weapons.
