‘Squeaky Clean’ Mormon Sen. Mike Crapo Drank ‘Multiple Vodka Shots’ Before DUI Arrest

Another Republican politician who says one thing in public and does another thing in private, and will suffer no political consequences because of the IOKIYAR principle: Report: Mike Crapo Drank Vodka Shots.

Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) drank multiple vodka shots before he was arrested for driving under the influence early Sunday morning in Alexandria, according to public court documents.

Crapo, 61, has a court date set for Jan. 4, according to news reports. Police say Crapo made a U-turn at a red light and while he was being cited for a traffic violation, the officer smelled alcohol, and noticed bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. He failed sobriety tests. Police say he had a .110 BAC, significantly above the Virginia legal driving limit of .08.

In an apology issued Sunday, Crapo said in a public statement: “I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance. I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter.”

Crapo has a reputation as a “squeaky clean” right wing Mormon, who boasted publicly that he abstains from alcohol.

Yeah shooting vodka isn't exactly something a non-seasoned drinker does either

Eh, of all the things going on, this one is pretty lackluster. It seems every one of these over-religious, fire-breathing, self-proclaimed choir boys has at least 1 skeleton in their closet, and usually it's a small village worth of them.

Not like this wasn't going on for a long time. You don't abstain from alcohol for life and then down shots of straight liquor (well, YMMV).

I've always been surprised at how lightly people treat DUI convictions. It was a serious strike against George W. Bush, in my mind, especially since it was 30 when it happened and he had every opportunity to know better.

From the Joe.My.God. blog:

RELATED: Crapo has a perfect track record of voting against LGBT rights. In June he cosigned the GOP amicus brief on behalf of the defense of DOMA. He twice voted for a federal constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and he voted against both the Hate Crimes Act and the repeal of DADT. Crapo has a 100% rating from the Christian Coalition and a 0% rating from the Human Rights Campaign.

Should anyone really be all that surprised that the supposed clean and sober Crapo turns out to be anything but.

Hypocritical? Absolutely. But his constituents will ignore it and this scandal will come and go.

He's lucky he didn't kill or injure anyone else during his drunken driving exploits this time. Luck that he was caught this time.

One has to wonder though how many times he's done so in the past and avoided getting caught.

I guess we'll be hearing that he's going into rehab next.

As Barry Meier and Andrew Martin reported in The Times this week, the gun industry works in partnership with the makers of games like Medal of Honor Warfighter and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 to publicize their brands to potential customers.

In the case of Medal of Honor, its maker, Electronic Arts, proudly and prominently promoted its ties to the gun industry by listing on its Web sites partners that included the McMillan Group, a gun and ammunition producer, and Magpul Industries, which makes gun magazines and other firearm equipment. The company’s Web site proudly declares the bona fides of its game with the motto “Authentic Game. Authentic Brands.” and, for a time, even offered a direct link to the Web sites of the companies where its young customers could peruse catalogs of real weapons. While those links have been removed, the Web site still encourages visitors to “Check out the McMillan Website and shoot to win!”

These troubling relationships expose the N.R.A.’s disingenuous strategy of blaming the media, songwriters, filmmakers and anybody else it can think of for mass shootings while denying that the association, which is the most influential opponent of sensible gun-control policies, bears any responsibility for the growing number of massacres like Newtown and Columbine.

On Friday, Wayne LaPierre, the executive vice president of the association, excoriated games like Bulletstorm, another game made by Electronic Arts. Will he and his association now speak just as harshly about the firearms producers that support and try to generate sales of their weapons by agreeing to have their likeness used in such games?

[subtext removed from GOP argument] Except that the GOP and Congress signed off on the expiration of the tax cuts three different times.

2001 upon initial enactment.(2001 EGTRRA)
2003 upon the accelerated enactment of the rate cuts (2003 JGTRRA)
2010 upon enactment of the tax extensions (H. R. 4853) through end of 2012.

That's three times that Congress knew that these tax credits would end. Now, they're hoping everyone ignores that Congress meant for the rates to eventually rise - just that no one wants to be on the blaming end for that.

The same Congress saw fit to pass the buck on cutting spending, and left it to automatic cuts unless Congress could find a way to make a deal on that too.

Congress failed to do that, so the automatic cuts will kick in and now they're kicking and screaming that their pet projects are on the chopping block and have to explain to their constituents that they hate government spending except for the programs that bring home the bacon to them.

Yep. You've got to be good and hard to handle either Marine presidential duty or the things The Old Guard does. Well really, the reason we're getting ready to go over the cliff is due to the GOP schism that's accelerating in the wake of the election. Even if Boehner wanted to agree to raising taxes on the $250K+ crowd, he doesn't have the votes for it. Why? Because his party now lives in constant fear of the crazies who, using the tools Citizens United granted them, will primary them out of office if they so much as breath a word of compromise with the DNC.

Noah Pozner's Family Remembers and Mourns
Jewish Family Copes With Loss of Child in Newtown Rampage

Newtown, Conn. — Six days after the funeral of six-year-old Noah Pozner, his family is taking stock of the gifts sent to them by strangers all over the world. There’s a stiff teddy bear in a brown overcoat and hat accompanied by a note from a woman who says the bear gave her great comfort when her mother passed away. There is a box filled with tiny stuffed animals. And a miniature cypress tree, which reminds Veronique, Noah’s mother, to think of life.

Noah’s maternal grandmother, Marie-Claude Duytschaever, pulls a brown bear with lanky arms and legs from a cardboard box. It’s meant for Noah’s twin, Arielle, and his 7-year-old sister, Sophia. Veronique takes the stuffed animal — the family will later name it “Noah Bear” — in her arms and gives it a long squeeze before surrendering it to the living room where the toys are quickly piling up. The gifts seem to comfort the family, but they also highlight the absence of the boy who would have reveled in them.

Continues.

He was on a constant path of discovery. “It was always, ‘How does this work? Why does this happen?’ He wanted to understand cause and effect,” says Veronique.

Noah also wondered about God, asking his mother, “If God exists then who created God?” He wanted to know what happens after death. “I would always tell him, ‘You are not going to die until you are a very old man, Noah.’ He was afraid of death, I know he was. He feared the unknown,” Veronique says. “Sometimes I wonder whether he had some foretelling, some prescience about it. NRA President Defends David Gregory, Knocks DC Law

National Rifle Association President David Keene said Thursday that NBC host David Gregory shouldn't be prosecuted for displaying an empty high capacity magazine on "Meet the Press," even though it may have violated Washington, D.C. law. Gregory held up the magazine Sunday during an interview that was taped in Washington with NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre. A city police spokesperson said earlier this week the agency was investigating the matter.

"No, I don't think so," Keene said in the interview Thursday on CNN when asked whether Gregory should be prosecuted. "There are two lessons for him there. One, don't ask the government what's legal and what isn't legal because half the people you ask don't know. And secondly, that's a silly felony. It's a felony in Washington, D.C., to own that magazine or to be caught with a cartridge.

First, who does shots of vodka? (Other than Lindsay Lohan..)

Second, the dude was fucked up at 0.11% BAC? That's lightweight material.

Wait I thought Lapierre was the President?

LaPierre is the executive vice president, the day-to-day honcho of the operation, sort of a grand vizier to doddering figureheads like Keene.

Big game of chicken at this point. Only difference for these assholes is that they're driving cars full of people by remote control.

False in one thing does not automatically translate to false in all.

I really do wonder what's the point of scheduling a session if they're just going to continue insisting that the Senate do their work for them.

Not automatically, but once you know you're dealing with a hypocrite, you don't know where nor whether the hypocrisy stops.

Marines are crazy people, it's not unexpected that they would endow great prestige on the crappiest job in the service.

They've also been known to jump out of perfectly good airplanes.... (or maybe that was Army? I can't tell the difference).

re: #59 Gus

In the Army they jump out of perfectly good airplanes while in the Marines they jump out of perfectly good boats.

Worse. They do it under machine gun and artillery fire.

re: #52 dragonfire1981

This is exactly. I think it's also a trick to try to get Obama to cave to GOP pressure and agree to extend the Bush tax cuts for everyone.

What pisses me off is if we do go over the cliff, there's not a damned thing you or I can do about it. We've just had an election, we're stuck with these morons for at least another two years.

Besides complaining, we're pretty much SOL.

People will be complaining A LOT after they see the big tax bite out of their first January paycheck. The President however, shouldn't sign anything unless it includes a resolution of the debt limit, because otherwise we'll just roll right into another crisis as the GOP tries to blackmail their way into getting the spending cuts they couldn't convince the voters should be made back in November.

98 lawhawk  Thu, Dec 27, 2012 12:45:33pm

Perhaps more immediate than the fiscal cliff is the fact that the annual AMT patch hasn't been enacted. This game is done annually because the AMT was never indexed for inflation, so Congress has to pass legislation manually adjusting the threshold for the AMT.

Without the AMT patch, someone with income as low as $45k will have to do the AMT calculation to see if they owe additional tax.

The IRS has already figured that the patch will be enacted and set up their computer systems accordingly, but Congress has yet to move.

This, more than the cliff will hit taxpayers hardest - particularly when they go to file since refunds may be delayed as the IRS has to process based on the law in effect, not what they wish/expect it to be. It will only add to the mess at tax time.

Our current Governor has a DUI on his record. He got it while serving at Lt. Governor. This will make no difference whatsoever.
