Why wait for legislation? Thousands of felony warrants await being served. Get after the worst first. Guns in felons possession. The way I look at that is you have a 2x benefit. It's the criminal threat that justifies gun possession for millions of people.

Question: How is the "felon" classification in regards to gun ownership defined?

Pot bust? DUI? Prison term for stealing a ATM machine from a K-Mart (really in our news today, and there's still K-Marts?)

Don't see any feasibility of this - serve every single felon on the books and search his/her house for guns?

It's for any felony conviction. Do time for anything that costs you even a year and a day in jail and you're a felon according to WI law. All misdemeanor offenses have maximum sentences of a year or less.

So yeah, pot head, meth dealer, rapist, murder, it's all the same to the law on that topic. Black powder & pre-1898 made firearms are very popular in some circles as a result of this.

Felony warrant raids and programs have been very successful in taking felons back to jail. I would say a top down violent conviction approach. Gang oriented actions have been successful at getting assault weapons and other guns out of criminal hands and to the smelter. If reducing the sheer number of guns matters, and I agree it does-Don't wait for legislation that can't touch guns already out there. L.E. can be funded to serve more felony warrants. No new laws, no waiting required.

What's the deal with felons and conversion cylinders? They can order them over the internet and take delivery without involving an FFL. As I understand it, a modern "firearm" isn't manufactured unless the conversion cylinder is in the bp revolver. Take it out, sell the gun and cylinder in separate transactions and again, no FFL required.

So it seems like a huge gray area. As far as felons are concerned, does separate ownership of the revolver and CC constitute constructive ownership of a modern firearm?

IIUC, most states ban felons from owning them but they have to get caught before it's an issue because no one checks. And really it's easier for most crooks to get a modern handgun via a straw purchase than to futz with conversion cylinders. 33 Kragar  Thu, Dec 27, 2012 5:17:56pm

Hard to tell if its been fired from this angle. The AT-4 is a single shot weapon, the tube isn't designed to handle reloads. Someone might have kept the launcher as a souvenir. Normally, they have a plastic dust cover prior to being fired which are punctured by the launch of the rocket.

34 lawhawk  Thu, Dec 27, 2012 5:18:27pm

re: #27 Kragar

Yeah, I saw that. It's a single shot disposable weapon, so if it was previously fired, this particular item would no longer pose immediate danger (since the barrel serves no purpose once the warhead is fired. If it was unfired, then that's a whole different ballgame.

CNN is trying to make hay out of an analogy Steny Hoyer used in a press conference answer today:

[Link: politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com...]

"It's somewhat like taking your child hostage and saying to somebody else, 'I'm going to shoot my child if you don't do what I want done.' You don't want to shoot your child. There's no Republican leader that wants to default on our debt, that I've talked to," Hoyer said at a Capitol Hill press conference.

Hoyer's comments came in response to a question about the Treasury Department's notice that the nation was approaching its debt limit. He criticized Republicans for previous resistance to raising the debt ceiling and used the gun analogy to argue that the issue should not be part of the negotiations involving the fiscal cliff.

CNN sells the story by trying to tie it to the Newtown massacre:

Less than two weeks after one of the nation's deadliest school shootings, the No.2 Democrat in the U.S. House, Steny Hoyer, compared Republican tactics for dealing with the nation's debt limit to someone threatening to shoot a child hostage.

If anything, it seems a better fit to reference it back (nearly word-for-word) to the opposition leader's own statements.

[Link: www.washingtonpost.com...]

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell:

“I think some of our members may have thought the default issue was a hostage you might take a chance at shooting. Most of us didn’t think that. What we did learn is this — it’s a hostage that’s worth ransoming."

AT4. One time use like the LAW. The launcher is designed to be disposable and once fired cannot be reloaded. Manufactured and packaged with the rocket in one piece as a single ordnance unit. Basically somebody got the LA buyback to purchase an inert tube.

Do Coat Hangers Sound As Good Monster Cables?

I’m so sorry, but I do not buy into 90% of the hype brought to us audiophiles by the commercial sector of our hobby and the home entertainment industry at large. My brother, an audio engineering whiz kid has proven to me what is real and what is not. Let me rehearse with you an example of how he does this.

We gathered up a 5 of our audio buddies. We took my “old” Martin Logan SL-3 (not a bad speaker for accurate noise making) and hooked them up with Monster 1000 speaker cables [ed. Monster Ultra Series THX 1000 Audio Interconnects] (decent cables according to the audio press). We also rigged up 14 gauge, oxygen free Belden stranded copper wire with a simple PVC jacket. Both were 2 meters long. They were connected to an ABX switch box allowing blind fold testing. Volume levels were set at 75 Db at 1000K Hz. A high quality recording of smooth, trio, easy listening jazz was played (Piano, drums, bass). None of us had heard this group or CD before, therefore eliminating biases. The music was played. Of the 5 blind folded, only 2 guessed correctly which was the monster cable. (I was not one of them). This was done 7 times in a row! Keeping us blind folded, my brother switched out the Belden wire (are you ready for this) with simple coat hanger wire! Unknown to me and our 12 audiophile buddies, prior to the ABX blind test, he took apart four coat hangers, reconnected them and twisted them into a pair of speaker cables.

I posted this earlier, but the fiscal cliff isn't going to be the thing that hits taxpayers hardest or even first. The higher tax rates in effect next year would require higher withholding, but that could be turned around fairly quick.

First thing that will put a serious dent is the fact that Congress hasn't taken up the AMT patch. Without it, income as low as $45k for a married couple could be hit with AMT liability. Potentially affecting 30 million taxpayers. Realistically, if the patch isn't done before February 1, I'd see real problems because taxpayers generally begin filing in earnest after that date. Added costs and time for everyone involved.

Figure that the AMT patch will be included in any deal, even though it should get a permanent fix.

Then there are a few other things - dairy prices could spike because Congress has to act on that archaic leftover from the Depression years.

Unemployment benefits will expire unless extended. That could hit a few million people too.

In some ways, the AMT patch might be the thing that gets the deal done. Watch that it gets wrapped into the deal on taxes.

Wall street (or at least the executives in charge) makes money either way. I don't think they care. They'll all ride their firms into the ground leaving shareholders to take the damage.

Heard a story on NPR today. Sea World is going public. After it was bought by a Romney Type asset management co. (that's my new point of reference now - Romney Type) that loaded it the shit up with debt to pay themselves- the management company. Sea World is making bank right now, but its a huge risk because of all the debt the Romney company stuck it with.

What a fucked up business model we've invented.

Left over ham, harvati, swiss, pepperocini's, mushrooms.

Quite extravagant, but all left overs! I just did the chop.

Sounds good, though I'd only want the meat and cheese myself. But I do like your idea for that and the ingredients work well together.

Some conflicting info out there, but the yellow with black bands seems to indicate a HE round, not a training model.

What do you understand Bain Capital's business model to be? Are you sure the firm involved used it?

Sounds good.
We just made soft tacos with leftover beef from a fancy dinner out. Chateau briand and prime rib. Heck of a taco!

re: #76 Targetpractice

It's an empty gesture on Boehner's part, he's not going to make any moves that might jeopardize his position until after the 3rd. Assuming that McConnell could work an 11th hour miracle and produce a bill from the Senate with bipartisan support, the House would kill it dead because it will undoubtedly see some or all of the upper tax rate cuts expire.

This is your country on Tea, ladies and gentlemen.

McConnell? That treasonous fuck?

Dark, lately I participate lightly. No I don't know if it used the BAIN business model. I heard on the radio and it sounded exactly the same.

Load the debt, make the $$$ for doing your "work" the company loses.

Anyone buying Sea World tomorrow?

Apparently all the pundits are hopeful that he can work a holiday miracle by drafting up a bill or amendments to the GOP bills already passed earlier this year that will meet with White House and Senate Dem approval, and get them passed fast enough that the House will have time to vote upon them before we go over the cliff.

Me, I'm not holding my breath.

And one that deals with the debt limit too. Don't forget that bit too.

That 2% payroll holiday isn't good for SSI.

On the whole, retirees have for many years not kept up with their experienced inflation rate.

And, one of the shenanigans the Treasury Secretary will do, come the 1st and there is no new debt limit, is to use the almost $200 billion in Federal employee retirement funds as essentially collateral in short term spending.

Yeah, that's gonna be the hat trick. The White House is not going to enter into hostage negotiations again, which Boehner and the GOP leadership thinks is their only way to extract "painful" cuts from Obama.

Next week is shaping up to put Newt's brinkmanship with Clinton during the 90s to shame.

Just saw a terribly sad news story. Just today a homeless woman was doused in rubbing alcohol and set afire on a bus bench at a major intersection in the SF valley. A 24 year old man has been arrested. This is why I worry as much about the innate violence in our culture as the weapons at hand.

I don't know. I will say that you should look at how Sea World was restructured, since one thing Bain normally did right was fix problems with how the company was run.

But I'm not going to say much more on this, since I don't have to defend Bain much anymore.

I don't think that's 'the culture' so much as it is a nihilist. it would more accurate to call him the product of a very nasty subculture that seems to occur among some of the homeless in LA.
