Krauthammer: Obama Has Ruthlessly Shattered the GOP, Created Internal Civil War

Kitchen sink
Opinion • Views: 34,824

Charles Krauthammer gives President Obama credit for a “stunning accomplishment,” saying that Obama has ruthlessly shattered the Republican Party, breaking their will and causing an internal civil war while vacationing in luxury and playing golf every day: Krauthammer to Hannity: Obama Has Successfully Created ‘An Internal Civil War’ Within the GOP.

Also, Obama’s overplaying his hand, and will go down in history as a failed president with a radical ideology. And he needs to give in to the Republicans now or he’ll be blamed for the fiscal cliff.

Basically, Krauthammer’s throwing everything he has against the wall in this one, hoping something will stick. I’m no Beltway insider like the K-man, but it seems to me the Republican Party has done a pretty damned good job of shattering itself.

The GOP needed absolutely no help in pitting social-regressive nutters against the fuckyouIgotmine rich by turning the pander to 11. I think they managed to do that all by themselves.

Obama has destroyed the GOP but he must cave to GOP demands or else things will get worse esp. with the fiscal cliff/debt ceiling?

That's the gist (and 140 character summation of his comments).

Weak. Tea.

So since Obama has somehow "caused" the GOP to be engaged in civil war, Obama is the one who should surrender? Huh?

I'd love to see how this "logic" might have worked throughout history. I'm picturing Atahualpa threatening Pizzaro: "Yes, Spaniard, you have captured me, and my empire is in tatters due to the war I just had with my brother, but you'd better surrender now, lest Spain be conquered by my armies!"

31 Sol Berdinowitz  Fri, Dec 28, 2012 1:26:40pm

Remember that Karl Rove tried to warn birthers that Obama was "leading them into a trap". Basically they wound up punching Obama in the fist with their face.

He also tried to warn the party about nominating unelectable Tea Party candidates. Which led to the GOP punching Obama in the knee with the pit of their stomach.

Scary when Karl Rove is one of the voices of reason within the GOP.

The NRA will be heard arguing that banning or restricting assault weapons will not diminish attacks and then they put forth another totally spurious proposal. that was the point of my argument there.

The point is, we cannot let the NRA dictate the game. I hope that this year's excesses of gun violence is going to inspire more politicians to stop cowering before the gun lobby.

They've been a bucket of crawfish ever since they started appealing to the bigots and mouth-breathers in the South that now make up their base. The GOP establishment just used to be able to hide it better.

He says that police believe the "shoulder-fired" weapons are antiquated, decades-old, launchers from wars past often picked up by collectors or passed down to family members by veterans.

They refused to distance themselves from the extremists or advise them to pipe down, and now it is coming back to really bite them in the butt. They know they need these people to win regional and state elections, but that they are doomed at a national level unless they can come up with a way to appeal outside this shrinking base.

There was some wild speculation that went around earlier in the lead-up to Obama's meeting with Congressional leaders, suggesting that he might agree to a temporary scaled-back fiscal cliff deal to push out deadline 60-90 days in order to give Congress time to get its shit together.

Thankfully, it looks like the initial spasms of rage over said speculation were for naught:

AP: Obama Not Making New Cliff Offer

Obama instead is spelling out again a plan he says can pass the House and Senate, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was unauthorized to speak publicly about the private meeting.

Obama wants a bill to halt looming tax increases on all families making $250,000 a year or less and would extend unemployment insurance to many people about to lose it. His proposal would also cover other issues as the Jan. 1 deadline nears.

If he does not get a counter proposal that can pass both chambers, Obama will press for a straight up-or-down vote on his idea, the source said.

It will be interesting to see if it ever goes to trial or not. That, I suppose will depend on how good her attorney is which will be determined by how much money gets poured into it. Only 2 died in that 2001 shooting, though 13 were injured. But it didn't make the MJ list - which only goes to show that there are very many more mass shootings than what is on the MJ list.

Delhi gang-rape victim dies in hospital in Singapore

A female student gang-raped on a bus in India's capital Delhi has died at a Singapore hospital, doctors say.

"The patient passed away peacefully at 4:45am on 29 Dec 2012," a statement from the hospital said. The patient's family had been by her side, it added.
...
"She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain. She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome," the statement went on.

"We are humbled by the privilege of being tasked to care for her in her final struggle," Mr Loh said.

Vietnamese would make her less likely to get convicted, since East Asians aren't seen as "crime prone" by most people, even wingnuts. They are less likely to be seen as a 'problem' and they tend to have more intact families with more people who are seen as 'solid citizens' who will vouch for them. As with many things in life, who you know and how you are seen can decide your fate.

No, what this shows is how futile the idea of arming everyone for self defense is. The advantage is always to the attacker. Here we have an unarmed opponent in the middle of armed defenders who already know the person is "bad". You can't get a more advantageous position for the defenders, and yet the presence of firearms still allows the the attacker to do serious damage which would not have been possible of no one was armed.

The killings were carried out by a lone shooter. (Except in the case of the Columbine massacre and the Westside Middle School killings, both of which involved two shooters.)

The shootings happened during a single incident and in a public place. (Public, except in the case of a party in Crandon, Wisconsin, and another in Seattle.) Crimes primarily related to armed robbery or gang activity are not included.

The shooter took the lives of at least four people. An FBI crime classification report identifies an individual as a mass murderer (as opposed to a spree killer or a serial killer) if he kills four or more people in a single incident (not including himself), and typically in a single location.

If the shooter died or was hurt from injuries sustained during the incident, he is included in the total victim count. (But we have excluded cases in which there were three fatalities and the shooter also died, per the previous criterion.)
We included six so-called "spree killings"—prominent cases that fit closely with our above criteria for mass murder, but in which the killings occurred in multiple locations over a short period of time.

For more on how we determined the criteria, see our mass shootings explainer. Also: more on the crucial mental illness factor, and on the recent barrage of state laws rolling back gun restrictions across the US.

Looks like we're going over the cliff. There are probably enough stop gap measures to avoid much of the short term consequences but this means that it's going to drag into next year. Dems and Republicans will continue fighting about what they should have done the previous year while problems continue to pile up unsolved. I've been trying to be optimistic and pragmatic about things but I think we're fucked. I don;t feel good about this at all.

Here's the man responsible for the state the Republican Party is in. With his lovely wife.

Image: 121227_barack_michelle_obama_605.jpg

First lady Michelle Obama says she has learned patience by watching her husband and has done "pretty well" at keeping her opinions private.

"I have learned from my husband, watching him, that it does require a great deal of patience to really feel the full impact of the work that you do on the ground," she told Barabara Walters in an interview broadcast Wednesday. "It doesn't happen right away."

"She has a bigger difficulty biting her tongue," President Obama chimed in.

"I think I've done pretty well at that," his wife shot back.

"Not bad," he said.

The logic of House GOP intransigence

"...some question whether Republicans may be oversensitive to the potential political fallout from voting to raise taxes. Last week, Harper Polling surveyed Republican voters on whether a candidate who signs a no-tax pledge, such as the one advocated by conservative activist Grover Norquist, should ever violate that pledge. A less-than-overwhelming 47 percent said the pledge should be followed."

Nope. And every small business in America is going to have to redo their payrolls by either January 15th or the 31st, depending on their paycheck cycle. The larger, too, but it's a lot more work for the little guys and gals. Then, when the inevitable resolution occurs, they'll get to do it again. Pain for the 98%, an annoyance for the 2%.

Some politicians have come under fire for comments insulting the protesters and diminishing the crime.

147 Ming  Fri, Dec 28, 2012 3:22:15pm

Krauthammer has it exactly backwards. Obama did not create the civil war within the GOP. In reality, the GOP's internal strife is inevitable, given that two of their main constituencies are almost polar opposites: (1) small-government, "libertarian-leaning" Republicans, and (2) big-government, "let's have a Christian theocracy and lots of wars" Republicans. There are also those who have a problem with women and non-whites, and those aren't the type of people who get along well with others; thus more internal strife.

So OF COURSE there will be internal strife within the GOP; it follows directly from the deep ideological conflicts. Perhaps no single person embodied these conflicts more than Paul Ryan, the "Ayn Rand Catholic".

A group thus prone to conflicts often finds a common enemy to unite against. It's the only thing that holds them together. President Obama is that enemy. Krauthammer has the cause and effect exactly backwards. Obama didn't cause the GOP's internal divisions. The GOP's internal divisions causes the blind hatred of the President.

Oh look! Another dumb "petition":

We Demand Obama Issue Executive Order Making White House, Federal Buildings and Events Gun Free Zones

Journalist Alex Jones and Infowars.com are calling for President Barack Obama to issue an executive order amending the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990. The executive order will establish the White House, all federal buildings and federal events as gun free zones and all federal security personnel will turn in their guns. We also demand the order apply to private schools such as Sidwell Friends School attended by the president’s daughters. This petition is a response to government and corporate media dismissing a call for armed guards at schools following the Sandy Hook shooting. Jones and Infowars.com believe there should not be a double standard. If the government believes gun free zones are a solution for citizens, the same standard should apply to government servants and employees.

Someone, please explain this one.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, the school hired security guards to keep them out of their daughter's performances in school productions. When she cut off all contact with them, her parents responded by stopping payment on tuition checks.

Both the school and the court have sided with Aubrey. The University of Cincinnati gave her a full scholarship for her senior year, and the judge issued a civil stalking order against her parents, ordering them to stay at least 500 feet away from her and have no contact with her until September 2013.

Helicopter parents are nothing new. They ignore boundaries or simply embarrass their adult children once they've left for college -- or worse -- in the workplace. Few cases are so extreme as Ireland's.

In June 2012, researchers at the College of Business and Economics at West Virginia University conducted a study of 340 students and found that many simply grow accustomed to parents' constant involvement. Nearly seven out of 10 students said it was "somewhat" or "very appropriate" to receive help from their parents in writing a resume or a cover letter. Actually, they are gun free zones.

See, despite the common idiocy none of the areas cited are truly "gun free". On duty police officers (to give the most common exception) are allowed to be armed in those places and situations.

The whole whine is yet another case of lying or ignorance. Hard to tell any more, but I'm still willing to give benefit of the doubt to a few poor souls.

Impossible to say. But I'm not sure it makes a whole lot of difference to the mouse.

I've seen cats play with small creatures before killing them, and it's true you can never be certain you're not projecting human emotions, but I have to say they give every appearance of having a great time during the killing process.

Obama's tired of negotiating with himself, which is what this situation has dissolved into. Even if Boehner were willing to risk his speakership to negotiate a deal, he can not make any guarantee that he'd be able to produce the votes. And McConnell is not making any bold moves either because he's up for reelection in '14 and doesn't want to be seen as supporting Boehner in this endeavor.

195 FemNaziBitch  Fri, Dec 28, 2012 3:42:22pm

This story is about more than helicoptor parents. something quite weird is going on here.

“It’s just been really embarrassing and upsetting to have my parents come to my university when I’m a grown adult and just basically slander my name and follow me around,” Aubrey Ireland said in an Oct. 9 court hearing.

Despite her good grades and success in musical shows, David and Julie Ireland often drove 600 miles from Leawood, Kan., to visit their daughter unannounced. They accused her of using illegal drugs, promiscuity and suffering from mental woes. She insisted none of that was true and asked them to stop, but their accusations escalated. They informed her department head she had mental issues that could force them to go to court to have her treated.

The parents knew about what they saw as their daughter’s problems because, they admit, they installed monitoring software on her laptop and cellphone, allowing them to see her every keystroke and phone number dialed or received. It was “like I was a dog with a collar on,” said the daughter, a dean’s list student every quarter.

The parents became such an issue that the school hired security guards to keep them out of their daughter’s performances. When the parents stopped paying her tuition because she’d cut off all contact with them, the school gave her a full scholarship for her final year.

The college senior decided to seek a civil stalking order to keep her parents away from her after they went to UC and told her college administrators they could seek to have her taken in for mental evaluations. She filed a Sept. 24 stalking order against her parents.

I go grocery shopping once a week with my friend and neighbor, D. Another friend went to Houston and asked me if I'd like some fresh shrimp brought back. I thought of my friend D., who is a Katrina refugee and has complained about only being able to get frozen shrimp here, and I put in a request for 2 pounds. She brought back 3 pounds, and I gave it all to D. A few days later (day before yesterday) she brought over:

-Gumbo
-Red rice that she says is halfway between Cajun and Jambalaya
-Potatoes with ham and green beans
-Cheesy broccoli and cauliflower
-a wing and a thigh and some stuffing from the Christmas meal she and her boyfriend had
-potato salad
-a plate with more shrimp and ham

I haven't eaten that well in years. And I'd never had gumbo before. And there's still some left for tonight!

Yesterday I gave her one of my butternut squash pies with my possibly best-ever crust. I'm still indebted.

Perhaps it will become (or is) possible to monitor cats' brains to assess whether they are (apparently) feeling pleasure.

I'd just as soon the following conjecture hadn't crossed my mind: Maybe natural selection sometimes favors predators to whom the killing process is a pleasure. (How do feral cats and other felines behave?)

Why wouldn't it be a pleasure? Do we not, with pleasurable anticipation, look forward to a meal when we're hungry? To a cat, a mouse or a bird is food. Stalking, pouncing, and killing it is like us preparing a meal, our mouths watering, knowing our grumbling tummies will soon be filled.

Allegedly, if you thoroughly mix part of flour with fat (about 1/3 to 1/2) and then make the piecrust, you can skip the vodka trick. Both of them are ways of reducing the amount of gluten in the final product.

But what do I know, I rarely make pies, and almost always buy premade crusts.

Chilean Court Indicts Two Men for Murder of Singer Victor Jara

Jara was shot 44 times while being held in military custody at Chile’s national stadium in the days after Augusto Pinochet seized power on Sept. 11, 1973, the court found according to a copy of the resolution forwarded by e-mail by the press office of the Chilean judiciary today. "Tormenting" is not a cat/predator concept. Prolonging a kill, in our eyes, is in theirs a process of weakening prey to make a successful kill. What we see in domesticated cats, that we see as play, is a form of natural behavior manifestation. They don't need to kill for food but the instincts are still there and they will eat the prey if they successfully manage to kill it or offer it as a gift, as a big cat will offer a gift to the leader of a pride.

Trying a download now to my hard drive where I'll use daemon tools to read the ISO and try to run the OS install from there...maybe I can fuck this machine up enough to allow booting from USB.

Jorge Cafrune

...In 1977, after several years spent living in Spain, he returned to Argentina which was governed at the time by the military dictatorship of Jorge Rafael Videla.

The government saw a menace in Cafrune's outspoken music, particularly his politically controversial song, Zamba de mi esperanza.

On his persistence, Cafrune said, "Although it is not in the authorized repertoire, if my people requests it of me, I am going to sing it."

On January 31, 1978, Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Enrique Villanueva ordered the assassination of Cafrune.

After being run over by a van driven by two nineteen year old men, Cafrune died within twelve hours.

But cf Charles #182:

I've seen cats play with small creatures before killing them, and it's true you can never be certain you're not projecting human emotions, but I have to say they give every appearance of having a great time during the killing process.

Use pendrive. A USB drive will not boot without syslinux as a boot loader. If you just copied the iso to the drive you actually don't have a bootable or installable source.

Work on it Dark. It's called 'empathy'. It can be learned.

What the creators of South Park were saying (it was an episode of the show where Stan was in the doghouse with Token for his attempts to defend his father's use of the n-word) is that its impossible to know how much racism hurts if you haven't experienced. You can and should still try to understand, but if it doesn't happen to you you're not going to truly 'get it'. What I was saying was not a confession of lack of empathy; I was referring to the limits of empathy.

312 Ghost of Tom Joad  Fri, Dec 28, 2012 6:16:06pm

WTF? Obama used his eleven-dimensional chess method to turn the GOP into a bunch of raving lunatics, so in order to save the country from those lunatics, he needs to give them everything they want, with a cherry (or unaborted fetus) on top.

That's like Shithammer's football team being down 50 points at the 2-minute warning in the 4th quarter, and telling the other team they need to forfeit otherwise they're going to rampage through the stands and throw people into the parking lot from their nosebleed seats.

Like everything else in their minds, it's never their ideology that has failed, it's the always the fault of something, or somebody, else. The black man drove the white guys crazy.

I swear, I would literally give up everything I had if Obama would just bust into a session of the House with The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Big Papa" blaring on the speakers just so I can watch the entire Republican party's heads explode while they simultaneously shit themselves (Ted Nugent, I'm putting you in charge of this).
