When Barack Obama was first elected, the Republican Party publicly pledged to obstruct everything he tried to do, with the goal of making him a one-term president. They failed at this goal, and now it seems like the GOP has decided to punish America for reelecting Obama.

Well this is what Krauthammer was advocating on Fox in that video you posted a couple of days back Charles. He said don't compromise, go over the cliff if that is what it takes and then threaten a fiscal default again in February when the GOP "has the upper hand."

It looks like that is where we are headed, credit ratings and interest rates be damned, the GOP is probably going to hold out for more "leverage." Stupid fucking bastards honestly don't give a shit about this country or the majority of its citizens anymore. They serve an ideology designed to bring back the halcyon days of the robber barons and they are getting pretty close to making it a reality.

I always felt that in Mitt Romney's America, the goal would be to have everybody lined up outside the Home Depot every morning. Managers would show up with their flatbed trucks and announce that they need six bookkepers, two accounts managers and an IT specialist, nine-fifty an hour, no benefits...
That would do a lot to improve individual initiative and encourage Job Creators to work their Market Magic.

Why do we need a reduction in the corporate rate tax when they are already making the highest profits ever? Not just in monetary terms but also as a percentage of the national GDP. Even with the existing tax rates many corporations are paying nothing or next to nothing while profiting billions.

You just need to hire a lobbyist to spread a few campaign donations around then get a congressman to submit a loophole for your business. They do it all the damn time, no big deal, then it wont matter anymore what the statutory rate is.

Payroll Tax - 2013 will bring the expiration of the payroll tax cut enacted by Congress in 2011. Starting next year, the current employee payroll tax rate of 4.2 percent will go back to 6.2 percent.

Higher Tax Levels - At the end of the year, the Bush-era tax cuts are slated to expire. Unless these cuts are extended, tax rates will revert to 2001 levels. The current 10 percent tax bracket will be eliminated, making 15 percent the lowest tax bracket. The existing 25 percent tax bracket will increase to 28 percent, the current 28 percent tax bracket will increase to 31 percent, the 33 percent tax bracket will increase to 36 percent, and the 35 percent tax bracket will increase to 39.6 percent.

Capital Gains and Dividend Taxes - The expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts will also bring changes to capital gains and dividend taxes. In 2013, the top capital gains rate for most investors is slated to jump to 20 percent from its current rate of 15 percent. Taxpayers in the current 10 percent and 15 percent tax brackets – who do not have to pay any tax on long-term capital gains and dividends – will pay 10 percent on long-term gains. The treatment of dividend income will change as well. Currently, income from qualified dividends is treated as capital gains and taxed with a top rate of 15 percent. Next year, dividend income will instead be taxed as ordinary income, with a top rate of 39.6 as outlined above. While taxes on long-term capital gains and dividends will go up for everyone, these changes could result in substantial increases for high-income earners.

Estate Tax - The estate tax is also scheduled to jump from 35 percent to 55 percent in 2013, while the value of estate assets excluded from estate taxes will drop from $5.12 million to $1 million.

Marriage Penalty - The marriage penalty will reappear in 2013, potentially resulting in a greater tax burden for married couples filling jointly.

if you look at it from another point of view, it might seem like the republican party is taking it out on the 'job creators' in a passive/aggressive kind of way - most of these breaks for them, such as capital gains and the estate tax, might not be so easy to put back in

A bunch of classified documents subject to a FOI request were dumped (with heavy redactions) on the Friday before Christmas.

They include details on coordination between the FBI, NCIS, Homeland Security, the Domestic Secrity Alliance Council(?) and major banks on how to deal with OWS as a matter of domestic terrorism. Yes, OWS is consistently referred to as a domestic anarchist/terrorist enterprise. Nice to know that protesting against banks is now potential terrorism.

Also, somebody (redacted) had made plans to assassinate OWS leadership (In Dallas, it seems) with suppressed sniper rifles. The FBI never told anybody in OWS that they were in significant danger.

FBI documents FOIAd by the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund (PCJF) revealed that the FBI coordinated the violent crackdown on Occupy in partnership with the big banks and Federal Reserve offices through a secretive FBI - corporate collaboration called the Domestic Security Alliance. Occupy was monitored, infiltrated and targeted by the FBI as a domestic terrorist organization according to the documents, with close coordination between the big banks, local police and the FBI. The heavily redacted documents reveal the existence of a corporate-federal police state.

Update - Clarification:
Plans were made to assassinate Occupy leaders by sniper fire, but the documents don't make it clear who was involved with the plans. The FBI did not inform the targets of the assassination plans. It is not clear whether an organization or individual was involved. The document's source was Texas and it discussed activities in Texas.

There was a lot of talk last year on how much coordination was going on between local and federal LE on suppressing OWS (and the suppression got pretty damned violent even here in NC) but this is the first indication we have had that major banks were partnering with the FBI to shut the protests down.

Claiming that the federal government lacks the Constitutional authority to regulate firearms maintained within one state, a South Carolina State Senator has introduced a bill that would exempt the state’s guns, ammo and accessories from all federal regulation.

The bill, called the South Carolina Firearms Freedom Act, cites the Ninth and Tenth Amendments for legal support, in conjunction with the Commerce Clause of the Constitution. The argument goes that the two Amendments give to states all powers not specifically given to Washington, and that since state’s regulate intrastate commerce—in this case, the sale and purchase of firearms—states have the sole authority to regulate firearms manufactured and used within their borders.

The bill’s scope is specifically limited to only natively built and sold firearms to keep it from broaching the federal government’s power to regulate interstate trade via the Commerce Clause.

This was all (more or less) known previously. This is why the feds uncovered and busted up plots to blow up a bridge and firebomb Obama campaign office and police station in Chicago. OWS had a violent and radical element at its core, that wasn't much of a secret.

So, OT but I just got done watching the documentary "The Times Of Harvey Milk" and Gus van Sant's "Milk", starring Sean Penn.

Excellent films, both of them. Sean Penn was outstanding. He certainly deserved his Oscar as Best Actor.

A small edit; between the two films, I found the documentary better. Nothing against Mr. van Sant or Mr. Penn, I just found the documentary more moving emotionally. I'm supremely cynical, but "The Times Of Harvey Milk" definitely got me choked up. "Milk" also, but the documentary film is more powerful on the emotional level.

Why do we need a reduction in the corporate rate tax when they are already making the highest profits ever? Not just in monetary terms but also as a percentage of the national GDP. Even with the existing tax rates many corporations are paying nothing or next to nothing while profiting billions.

You just need to hire a lobbyist to spread a few campaign donations around then get a congressman to submit a loophole for your business. They do it all the damn time, no big deal, then it wont matter anymore what the statutory rate is.

What difference does it make whether a tax is levied on a corporation, or on the corporation's customers, managers and workers? It would be better to simply bump up federal income tax rates and drop corporate taxes. That way, you're not randomly taxing some mix of the groups named above without having any idea who really bears what portion of the cost. It's also harder for corporations to lobby their way out of the tax if there isn't any such thing or if it's low enough to be consistent with what other nations do.

TROY POTTERY HOLDS A KEY TO THE GREAT BRONZE AGE COLLAPSE

I've referenced the "great Bronze Age collapse" before in writing about religious ideas. If it wasn't for this great transition in antiquity, we (the US, or western culture as we know it) probably wouldn't be, nor would our dominant religion ("Christianity" variant of mono-theism) be what it is.

Around 1200 BC the entire Eastern Mediterranean underwent a major political/social change, and the old ways and old empires collapsed, and out of the rubble arose those "ancient" (but not quite as ancient) civilizations to which most people refer when they think of antiquity.

Anyway, big changes have happened to human civilizations before - really big changes.

Even our most sacred institutions will not last.

I'm not complaining. I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of people who go on Iranian State TV (an authoritarian regime with among the world's worst human rights record) to complain that the American government is oppressing OWS and likening it to the civil rights movement. They also failed to mention the very real terrorist plots that spawned from members of OWS, which is the whole reason the government was monitoring them.

There should have been an arraignment by now. Usually the filing of charges gives some indication of what he was up to. I guess they're still putting together the case.

Many of those cable channels continue to slide downhill, IMO. Series like "UFO Untold Stories", a litany of "Bible" related shows that are just pandering, etc.

Over in the UK the BBC has produced some decent big picture anthropology series the past two years, e.g., from geek heartthrob Alice Roberts.

Cases like that sometimes take years to go to trial, because there are complex evidentiary questions that must be resolved and then the trial must be scheduled for a time when the lawyers on both sides as well as the judge are free.

I love science shows about the universe..Totally Fascinated with it. And ever so often you'll see Phil, Dr. Gay or a member of the Nuker group. I love Pamela Gay. I've read her blog for years. .She is my top 5 blogger explaining the most complex Things in a way that the average guy can understand.
I love her..Harvard Grad, Professor. I remember when she would buy telescopes for girl scout groups and go out at night with them and open the Universe for them. Her hubby is a Blues guitarist who plays in Chicago.
And sometimes it nice having a cup in the morning and reading about Pam and her garden.

A bunch of classified documents subject to a FOI request were dumped (with heavy redactions) on the Friday before Christmas.

They include details on coordination between the FBI, NCIS, Homeland Security, the Domestic Secrity Alliance Council(?) and major banks on how to deal with OWS as a matter of domestic terrorism. Yes, OWS is consistently referred to as a domestic anarchist/terrorist enterprise. Nice to know that protesting against banks is now potential terrorism.

Also, somebody (redacted) had made plans to assassinate OWS leadership (In Dallas, it seems) with suppressed sniper rifles. The FBI never told anybody in OWS that they were in significant danger.

Rifle assassinations in Dallas? Were the shooters planning to use the grass knoll?
