When the chattering of the cable classes begins to get on your last nerve, there’s the new album by Brian Eno.

LUX is Brian Eno’s first solo album on Warp Records and his first solo album since 2005’s Another Day On Earth. It finds him expanding upon the types of themes and sonic textures that were present on such classic albums as Music For Films, Music For Airports and Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks. Eno sees it as a continuation of his ‘Music for Thinking’ project that includes Discreet Music (1975) and Neroli (1993).

LUX is one of Eno’s most ambitious works to date; it is a 75-minute composition in twelve sections that evolved from a work currently housed in the Great Gallery of the Palace of Venaria in Turin, Italy. The album is Eno’s third for Warp, following two collaborative albums Small Craft on a Milk Sea (with Jon Hopkins and Leo Abrahams) and Drums Between The Bells (with Rick Holland).

Interesting manipulation tactic. Every time a tax gets reduced, that becomes the new baseline. Eventually taxes will hit zero. If you add in all the government support to large corps taxes will go negative.

Did the GOP signers not see the inevitable end point of this and the potential problems with zero revenues?

The GOP lost this round, but someone over there's got to remember that they just got the Bush tax cuts and their extender made permanent on everyone but those making more than 400/450k. Not too shabby. Now, they'll focus on the rest of it, and they'll try again to impose massive cuts to the safety net by offsetting that versus the debt limit.

That's the next battle, and that's coming within the next two months.

We'll be right back at this zero hour in two months time. Watch. The GOP will push it to the brink. They'll make incoherent demands and think that they've got the upper hand, but all they'll do is undermine the US credit rating and make things more expensive for local government.

And the other question is what is the break point in an improving economy at which an increase in tax rates for the middle class should be considered? At some point there is a need for improved revenues allowing for some surplus and starting to pay down the national debt at some point.

I'm sitting here in my shop, trying to fix my grandkid's gaming headphones. He somehow broke the ground, so I shortened the cord and unsoldered the old leads from the pc-board. Now I have to solder the fresh ends to the board, but the leads must be 30 gauge or smaller and I can't get my hands still enough to bring the iron down accurately.

The deal done would reset the tax rates to the new lower levels, making tax hikes on anyone other than the top bracket out of the question and would seemingly let the GOP retake the initiative on taxes.

The only way to higher revenues would be reductions in tax deductions and credits. And that would be a potential path to tax simplification, which in ordinary times and with a semi-coherent GOP, would be attainable since tax simplification could solve multiple issues with the tax code.

Very quietly the era of drone warfare has begun. I think that has major implications for long term strategy for the military. Will we really need a standing army of hundreds of thousands of soldiers stationed all around the world to fight ground wars at the drop of a hat? Drone warfare could change everything.

Drones have serious limits, and their need for constant communications leaves them vulnerable to jamming, Anti-Radiation Missiles (ARMs) and Anti-Satellite (ASAT) weapons.

Where today's Republicans I think differ from past Republicans is they seem to genuinely hate government. Seems to me that Republicans back in the day while they personally preferred more small government seemed to think that efficient government was better than no government. It was. And the Bush administration deserves criticism for that. They wanted to have it both ways. They wanted a war in Iraq and they wanted tax cuts. They should have been honest that it was bad policy and either not invaded Iraq or done another tax cut. I know it will be brought up that the first tax cuts happened before the wars started but there was a tax cut in 2003 as well after the Iraq War started.

Another favorite dumb theme of wingnuts is that eliminating regulations will help businesses. OK, so take for example a company that just invested millions in a new production line that meets all environmental regulations. Then comes along wingnut politicians who obliterate those regulations. Now the business that just invested in the modern facility cannot compete due to operating costs and/or debt payments and they lose market share and go belly up.

When politicians run on a platform of eliminating or relaxing regulations, it can scare businesses into not investing in new capital.

We'll see what happens. There's a small chance the rumor is true, and Quinn is going to try some form of ban. Likely won't pass, though, since Illinois has too many people who are employed by gunmakers. But trying to pass such a bill in only 3 days isn't how things are done in this state, and a an as extreme as the one the ISRA speaks of wouldn't have the votes needed to pass. Lt. Gov. Cullerton wouldn't push a bill he knew didn't have the votes to pass in a case like this, which is why I think the rumor is baloney.

We need energy at the top, dynamic individuals to take on the very large job of improving the policies and laws of this nation.

I realize it sounds harsh, but we have to come to terms here with why we get stuck in these situations. Fundamentally, with a nation our size there will be many different voices. Old ways of doing business aren't working.

There's a deep problem here. Institutionally Congress is not showing the ability to change with the times. And that is why we are getting stuck with unsolved issues that call for legislation but which languish in no-man's land.

We've got 72 year old Frank Wolf here. Been in this seat since before my folks even met. He's not senile but we could use a new Congressman. It would be an interesting race if the seat became open because Obama's won this district both times and Warner and Kaine both carried in their Senate and Governor elections but it went to McDonnell in the last governor election. A lot would depend on the quality of candidate found which I think would improve if Wolf wasn't running. Wolf's got a reputation for being very good with constituent services, one that I agree with for that matter even if I disagree with what he stands for.

Wife went and said she said it was OK but that Russel Crowe could not sing at all and had no business getting that part.

I was surprised at all the male vocal performances. It's as if they were intentionally held back. None of them hit those notes that sizzle your spine they way the female vocals do. I know Jackman can do it, so I was wondering why the film performance seemed they way it did.

Crowe was disappointing, but I didn't know if it was because of his singing or the directing.

Keep in mind when the Tea Party takes a hit in Washington then they double up their efforts in the State legislatures. The Tea Party/ALEC/Rick Snyder alliance in Michigan are probably burning midnight oil getting a dozen bills ready for tomorrow morning.

Yeah. Probably because they actually heard her views on religion and social issues. Today's conservatives hear that selfishness is a virtue and charity is to be frowned on and they think "Wow the philosopher for me."

Then the anti war stance, and then the general assholery.

there was a pretty good book by a historian at UVA that was published a year or two ago that went into this in some detail

Sounds interesting. It really is interested for me to hear conservatives say that they're influenced by both Rand and the Bible. You saw it with Ryan until he realized he was being groomed and then he realized he couldn't be seen as a Rand fan boy because I doubt they would want him answering questions about the less than savory parts of Rand's philosophy namely the disdain for charity and religion.

My opinion is that he actually knew little about her despite his fanboy attitude, and when he found out some of these things he head to backtrack.

As I said before, I think he is pretty dumb.
