That's hilarious on two levels because it assumes that George III was an absolute monarch and it acts like Obama is a dictator. No idiots a majority of Congress voted for this bill. A majority. You may not like what they did but this is how representative democracy works. You may not like the end result but comparing it to dictatorship is insulting to people who actually suffer from dictatorships.

Or have enough them resign their seats and the Dems be the majority party again. So they can accuse Obama and the Democratic Congress of "shoving legislation down our throats." Because working for a health care reform law is the same as nonsensical attempts to repeal Obamacare while the signer of said legislation is still president and had recently successfully defended said legislation's constitutionality before the USSC.

Brain image study: Fructose may spur overeating

For the study, scientists used magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, scans to track blood flow in the brain in 20 young, normal-weight people before and after they had drinks containing glucose or fructose in two sessions several weeks apart.

Scans showed that drinking glucose "turns off or suppresses the activity of areas of the brain that are critical for reward and desire for food," said one study leader, Yale University endocrinologist Dr. Robert Sherwin. With fructose, "we don't see those changes," he said. "As a result, the desire to eat continues — it isn't turned off."

What's convincing, said Dr. Jonathan Purnell, an endocrinologist at Oregon Health & Science University, is that the imaging results mirrored how hungry the people said they felt, as well as what earlier studies found in animals.

"It implies that fructose, at least with regards to promoting food intake and weight gain, is a bad actor compared to glucose," said Purnell. He wrote a commentary that appears with the federally funded study in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association.

CJR interview Tyson:

Another round of Cosmos

[...]

Q: But you’ve criticized Fox’s Bill O’Reilly for using the motion of the tides to prove the existence of God, and debated former GM vice chairman Bob Lutz, a climate skeptic, on national television.

I was called to those tasks. It was Stephen Colbert’s initiative to push back on O’Reilly, and since I’m an easy date for him—my office is not far from his studios—he called me in to do a kind of half-rehearsed skit, which was very funny, about who’s in charge of the tides. If astrophysicists can fully explain the tides, are they in charge? Or is God in charge? The same is true with climate change. I was invited to appear on Real Time with Bill Maher.

It doesn’t mean I don’t have opinions on these matters, it’s just that I’m not going to initiate it. But we need others to do it, so if I fail in getting people to think straight in the first place, then I hand them over to others. The mantle that had previously been occupied by Carl now has several people, including Michael Schermer, the editor of Skeptic magazine, and Phil Plait, colloquially known as the “Bad Astronomer” because he writes a blog [which moved from Discover to Slate in November] on correcting bad astronomy in movies, on websites, and in the rumor mill.

Q: Do you think the anti-intellectualism exhibited by O’Reilly is a problem in the media?

The media are not as egregious as the general public. It’s true, however, that guys like Larry King, who’s now retired, have given quite a bit of passage for people who have made careers pedaling pseudoscience. Especially, perhaps, with those who claim that they can speak to the dead, King took this sort of dispassionate view: ‘I’m just the interviewer here and people are coming in and making these claims, and you evaluate.’ Well, okay, but somebody decided to give these people a seat on your show. You can’t claim an absence of responsibility. If you’re a journalist, then you’ve got find out: Is this person speaking truth? What’s the evidence in support of it? Your neutrality is not “everything is equal.” Your neutrality is: I’m going to ask hard questions, no matter who it is, and if they crumble under the line of questioning, that’s because they had a house of cards to begin with. If journalism doesn’t bring that out, it’s bad for society, because you only have a strong democracy if those who vote people into office are informed and have the capacity to think intelligently about topics and issues—especially in the 21st century, with so many science issues in front of us that require informed judgment and informed leadership. The news media are a fundamental player in this. You can’t say you’re not in the position of power to shape that dialogue, because you are.

[...]

Noticed how smoothly he changes the topic from Bill O. to Larry King and the general populace.

One thing we all missed in the gun control debates of last week was the real purpose of the 2nd amendment.

Ask yourself what was going on back then, why did people need guns?

...

To fight the Indians.
To oppress the slaves.

Those are the meaning of the 2nd amendment, they were just too diplomatic to write that down.

Notice that the attitudes in gun culture haven't changed even if the targets are gone. It's still a culture based on considering whole populations of others to be the enemy!

It's still largely blacks, but because of crime or because of fantasies of a coming race war. In fact that's one reason that the tea party wants rid of ALL entitlements, because they have a fantasy that this will start a race war!

All that stuff about how guns protect liberty FROM THE GOVERNMENT is a modern, after the fact substitute for the original reasons, kill Indians, enslave blacks!

The temporary cut in payroll tax ended however I think. So there will be a tax effect on everyone.

Things are still a mess since I think the "compromise" skipped a number of items that still need to be addressed. Not to mention the need for a longer term fix since our current tax system is becoming more of a mess and we have a dysfunctional legislative system currently that is not interested in the necessary cooperative governance.

re: #262 wheat-dogghazi

This is what I've been saying. The tax plan that was adopted would have been cheered by the GOP if anyone other than President Obama was signing it into law.

It makes permanent the 2001/2003/2009 tax rate changes for those making under $400/450k and only those above face a resumption of the 39.6% tax rate in effect for the top tax bracket before the 2001 tax rate changes.

Capital gains rates remain at 15% for those making under $400/450k, those above that level see the rate rise to 20% or 23.8% (the higher rate is due to the tax imposed on high income earners to cover the PPACA changes).

However, the payroll tax rises back to 6.2% from 4.2%, affecting most taxpayers because that rate reduction was hoped to boost the economy during the recession.

BTW, the biggest item in the tax plan is making permanent the AMT patch. Instead of having an annual patch extended, they've made the patch permanent and it counts against the scoring to the tune of $1.8 trillion (as opposed to the total cost of $3.9 trillion over 10 years).

The cost is calculated comparing the law as in effect on January 1, 2013, which is where rates revert to their pre-2001 levels, plus no AMT patch.

Comparing the tax plan to what was in effect on 12/31/2012, and the new plan generates far more revenue and begins to close the spending gap.

It was obvious even to George that taking out that part of the so-called "axis of evil" was going to cost more political capital, money, and American warm bodies becoming cold ones than he and his advisers were willing to risk.

Over the holidays, another friend of mine died over the holidays-- a forty-three year old New London police officer who died of complications from cancer. The cancers were very aggressive, and the time from diagnoisis to death was short. However, even though he had excellent insurance through the police, the medical bills during his short illness skyrocketed and his recent widow is spending half of every day trying to sort through the mess and figure out what she actually owes, what his insurance is really supposed to cover, etc. A member of the police benevolent association is helping her, but it is still horrifically depressing for her.

This is another reason to switch to a single-payer system. The stress and pain of dealing with the arbitrary bureaucracies of the insurance companies, the lack of clarity, and the antagonistic relationship between the companies and their clients makes for sad, sad scenes like this one.

It is immensely frustrating that we're having to move heaven and earth just to pass a simple goddamn budget and prevent the country from going over the fiscal cliff, much less able to move forward on many issues that the country desperately needs. I hope the GOP does split over this issue, because goddamn we need to take action on so many fronts and the Party of No is dooming this country.

re: #325 Joanne

Social security isn't exactly "starved". There is a massive trust fund to keep paying benefits in full after payroll taxes start falling short in 20 years. Raising taxes on working people right now is bad economics because that reduces demand for goods and services at a time when millions of Americans are out of work. I wouldn't oppose raising it again once we get back to full employment.

329 lawhawk  Wed, Jan 2, 2013 7:39:53am

GOP complaining that there aren't spending cuts to go along with the tax cuts. That's hilarious considering that no cuts offset any of the 2001/2003/2009 tax plans. Now, they're suddenly demanding a dismantling of the safety net and programs that are funded separately (via the payroll tax).

Mind you that the bulk of the cost for the enacted 2012 tax act is due to making permanent the AMT patch. That's $1.8 trillion over 10 years.

Here's how the math really works out.

Without the patch, income is subjected to the AMT at a far lower amount. The CBO and JCT both look at law as it exists when making projections. So, when they forecast looking out, the AMT captured more and more income tax revenues due to hitting at a lower income tax level. Temporary patches just pushed the number forward, but eventually the AMT would hit at the lower level.

A permanent fix, as here, means that the income is now permanently off the books but is treated as a cost based on the law as in effect on 12/31.

We would never see that income in any event because of the annual patch dance done by Congress, but the CBO and JCT have to treat it in any event because that's how the law is written.

The AMT portion simply makes permanent what Congress has been doing for decades.

Bump that off the final CBO/JCT and there's still a sizable cost ($2.1t over 10 years), but that's again compared to the pre-2001 tax rates that just took effect for a day (the law as written - where tax rates rose to the pre-2001 levels). This act makes permanent the 2001 tax rates for everyone except those making over $400k/$450k.

For all of their whining, the GOP got much of what they've been calling for all along (permanently reducing the tax rates and making permanent the tax cuts so as to leverage future spending cuts - the back door approach to reducing government spending). They got the tax side done for the most part, but they're bitching that the tax act didn't include the spending cuts.

That'll be the battleground going into the new fiscal cliff talks that will conclude in the hours leading up to the next due date - 2 months from now.

You have to be careful out there with your head on a swivel. Look around 360 degrees. Listen for cars. Watch for cars that might be parked and about to pull out. Never assume someone sees you. Never assume people will stop at a traffic signal. All it takes is one simple mistake and before you know it you're dead. Gone.

re: #328 aagcobb

The payroll tax reduction was always meant to be limited in time but it was extended in the depths of the recession. That was a fair resolution, but the recession is over, and while unemployment rates aren't near where they should be, there's been significant improvement in many parts of the country and sectors of the economy.

Perhaps it's time to subject income over the first $110k to the payroll tax. Current law exempts all income over that level from the payroll tax. Raising that level would further resolve the pending trust fund gap going forward. In many respects, the payroll tax is more regressive since it affects low-income earners much more than high income earners - both in real dollars and in percentage of income.

Someone making $100k would have $6,200 taken out in payroll tax - 6.2% of their total income.

Someone making $1 million would have $6,826.20 taken out of payroll taxes (6.2% of the income up to $110,100). That works out to .68% of total income.

You don't own guns. You aren't a longtime shooter, hunter, or ex-military. You don't have any sort of concealed carry status. You don't have any reason to be 'pro-gun' except that you think it's something you should be because your 'team' is.

You are, like most Americans, wilfully underinformed about the real-life effects of civilian firearm ownership. The negative statistics undermining guns for self-defence are sobering and undeniable, much like the facts underpinning climate change. They are not matters of opinion. Insisting otherwise is like denying climate change or being a creationist. Yet you hope to stay as ignorant as possible so you can continue to support your 'team' line, despite their woeful track record of ignoring facts, and despite the fact that even you can't support it on other factual issues such as climate change and evolution.

California too. I have a theory about that law and it's simple. You wait at the crosswalk behind the curb and wait for all cars to stop. You also have to look for cars behind the other cars which might not stop in time. You don't just walk from the curb and into oncoming traffic expecting them to stop.

I am very leery in crosswalks - get across the street fast and avoid interacting with the cars since you generally only get to lose once as a pedestrian regardless of your being right or wrong about precedence. Gets remarked on by my coworkers.

And pedestrians in Philly are odd ducks. Lots of jaywalking, but that is not surprising in a city. But I notice the odd habit here of pedestrians waiting for a light to change often standing 3-4' out into the street already.

Closest I came to getting hit in the past six years here was crossing a two-land street (Pine) right after the light changed in my favor. Something (probably peripheral vision) made me delay my first step into the street right as a Philadelphia police car blew through the intersection against the light at about 35mph - no siren, no lights, just ran the traffic light.

Adjourning the house last night meant that the House GOP didn't want to set the precedent of having two bills passed in lieu of the Hastert Rule.

A nice reminder that parliamentary tactics are more important than people- not exactly how the framers intended, I think.

I think they knew it would sometimes work out that way. The Constitution was set up with the knowledge that sometimes assholes obtain significant political power, and one of the aims of the Constitution was to ensure that said assholes would be obstructed from using that power to take away the negative rights of others.

1st grade class at St. Finbar's in Brooklyn. One our fellow students was killed after coming out between two parked cars - baseball. They made us go to his funeral. Open casket, his family was there, mother crying loudly. It was a lesson for us. My mom never allowed us out on the streets alone.

I virtually crawl thru neighborhoods with kids. I'm terrified of the kid runnning after a ball into the street.

For those keeping count, this is the second time in as many years that the GOP has completely screwed over the NYC metro area.

First, they dithered and dickered over the Zadroga compensation act for Ground Zero workers affected by ailments caused by 9/11.

Now, they've delayed and deferred the Sandy reconstruction bill.

Some in the GOP are claiming that this was because Democrats larded up the bill with pork and they produced a bill that was less than half what NY, NJ, and CT requested - including the requests made by Gov. Christie (a GOPer) and the Republican delegations in both NY and NJ.

Yet, none of the GOP leaders could actually summon up the courage to put this to a floor vote because it would most surely pass in the same kind of fashion that the 2012 tax act just did (basically eviscerating the Hastert rule). It was about preserving the power for the House GOP leaders, not doing what was best for the country.

Don't think that this will be forgotten anytime soon. Not by a long shot.

(CNN) - For all the stalemate in the fiscal cliff negotiations, there were some heated moments, too.

A Democratic source familiar with one particular exchange told CNN that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell were sitting on a sofa in the White House.

House Speaker John Boehner breezed in and his first words to Reid were "Go f*** yourself."

Boehner's comment came after Reid took to the Senate floor on Thursday and characterized the House speaker's handling of his chamber as a "dictatorship."

Reid responded to Boehner's confrontational tone by laughing, the Democratic source said, though a GOP source who was there said he didn't think Reid was all that happy.

"The exchange continued, and it didn't get any better for Reid," the GOP source said.

Renditions continue under Obama, despite due-process concerns

The secret arrests and detentions came to light Dec. 21 when the suspects made a brief appearance in a Brooklyn courtroom.

The men are the latest example of how the Obama administration has embraced rendition — the practice of holding and interrogating terrorism suspects in other countries without due process — despite widespread condemnation of the tactic in the years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

More people have been killed in the Syrian civil war (upwards of 60,000), than all those killed in the Arab Israeli conflict from 1948-2013.

382 FemNaziBitch  Wed, Jan 2, 2013 8:21:42am
According to a recent report in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the two perpetrators were in cahoots with the restaurant down the street, and they wanted to give it a "competitive advantage" by sickening their rivals' diners.

Such competitive poisoning is not unheard of in China. Just last year, The AP reported on a local dairy farmer who intentionally tainted his competitor's milk supply with nitrite.

In the eggplant incident, the miscreants hid the drug clonidine – a white, odorless powder – in the restaurant's starch. When the chefs thickened up the braised eggplant with the starch, they inadvertently served up a few nearly toxic stir-fries.

All diners that ate eggplant for lunch on April 23, 2010, fell sick almost immediately, the report says. They got dizzy and tired, suffered from nausea and blurred vision, and even started vomiting.

At a local hospital, doctors discovered potentially toxic levels of clonidine in their blood. They treated the patients for low blood pressure and within 48 hours, all their symptoms resolved.

Police eventually discovered the drug in the restaurant's starch and traced it to the neighboring restaurant. The two perpetrators were convicted and sentenced to one year in prison, the report says.

I nearly got plastered by the Septa 42 bus at an intersection on Walnut years ago. He was gonna make that light, vehicular manslaughter be damned.

I'm pretty sure I nearly got hit by a car with Bill Cosby in the passenger seat at 7th and Chestnut. Can't say for certain.

NJ Congressional delegation is pissed at #Sandy aid package getting killed by Boehner and GOP leaders.

“It’s a disaster dealing with a disaster,” said Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-2), who represents the southern coast of New Jersey, which was devastated by the October storm. “To say I’m angry and disappointed would be an understatement.”

“It was a total shock — a commitment had been made,” added Frank Pallone, (D-6), who represents the northern part of the shore. “The issue wasn’t whether it would come up – it was when it would come up. There was no explanation.”

While House representatives try to piece together why the vote was called off today, several sources have confirmed that House members have a meeting scheduled with Rep. Eric Cantor, (R-Va.) the House’s Majority leader, in an effort to convene members for the Sandy aid vote before Congress adjourns Thursday. If Congress adjourns without voting on the bill, the process in both the House and Senate would have to start again, said LoBiondo – causing delays that could seriously impact recovery efforts.

“Every tick of the clock works against us now,” LoBiondo said.

House Republicans proposed their $27 billion Sandy disaster aid proposal Wedneday – a scaled-back version of the $60 billion package which passed the Senate last Friday. But LoBiondo and Pallone and others are pushing for the full $60 billion to rebuild their communities, they both said.

Mind you that both NY and NJ governors, plus CT had estimated the damage from Sandy at $87 billion. The Obama request was for $60 billion. So, the House GOP plan would be a third of what the damage tally really is, and they're claiming that it's the prudent plan?

They claim that the $60b plan was larded up with pork, and that the $27b was more targeted and focused, but they ignore that one can't simply build back as things were - it leaves everyone exposed to the same damage for the next inevitable storm. It's got to be built back better and stronger - more durable. That's more costly.

If anything, the Katrina experience was lost on the GOP. Again.

Americans expect temporary cuts to be permanent. It's a shame that all the Bush tax cuts didn't expire. That's the only way we can hope to make a dent in the deficit.

419 lawhawk  Wed, Jan 2, 2013 8:42:17am

The House plan would bifurcate the Sandy aid into two bills. If both sections pass, they'd be reincorporated as a single bill to match up with the Senate plan.

It's an asinine approach and only serves a political cover purpose. Never been done on other disaster spending plans.

Republican leaders of the House decided Monday to cut out about $400 million, split the bill into two sections of $27 billion and $33 billion. The plan calls for separate votes on each part and approval of a parliamentary procedure to rejoin them as a single bill if both passed.

The $27 billion piece, sponsored by House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers, R-Ky., would bail out the nearly depleted federal flood insurance program, give the Federal Emergency Management Agency enough funding to cover disaster response needs through late March, and fund some of the transportation, flood control and community reconstruction grants that President Obama asked for Dec. 7.

The $33 billion piece, sponsored by Frelinghuysen, would fund the rest of Obama’s request, minus what he called “Senate earmarks” totaling about $400 million for disaster programs not directly related to Sandy.

For all the talk of pork, the House GOP plan essentially differs from the Senate version by $400 million. The House GOP will scuttle the Sandy aid over $400 million (when that $400 million is going to other areas hit by natural disasters and got piggybacked btw). You'd have to pull the text from the two bills, plus the Senate version to see what's really going on.

Again.

Peter King was just on with MSNBC, in all his righteous fury... I laugh at him when he goes on his anti-Muslim rants, but today he made me proud to say he's from my state. Yelling about how quick the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut delegations were to support Katrina relief, he feels shit upon that the southerners and mid-westerners are being assholes just because they hate our region and want us to suffer, he resents the regionalism he's hearing in the Congressional cloakroom, and fuck party discipline if this is what they're going to do to him on Sandy the whip can just go fuck himself next time they need his vote for something and... okay, I may be paraphrasing a bit, but that was really the gist of it.

Grimm: Boehner Betrayed Us By Failing To Take Up Sandy Relief

Rep. Michael Grimm (R-NY) said Wednesday he feels betrayed by House Speaker John Boehner for failing to take up Hurricane Sandy relief legislation the night before.

"We were all set to go, and I feel that this was a betrayal, I just half to say it," Grimm told WNYC's Brian Lehrer. "I feel it's a betrayal and an indefensible, an indefensible error in judgment on the Speaker's behalf."

Asked whether it makes him question his support for Boehner when he is up for re-election as House Speaker, Grimm said: "Unfortunately, it absolutely does."

As I said last night - in the optics war, the GOP shot themselves in the face with a howitzer. They haven't begun to taste the outrage they're in for.

So they go and betray vulnerable, suffering storm victims. Getting back to the subject of "punching", what I wouldn't give to allow every one of those victims the chance to do that to the members of the house GOP!

Yet, by their actions, the GOP leaders are likely to push folks like King, Grimm, and other GOPers from purple states and districts out of the party - the worst thing the GOP could do.

Hey, don't downding me over it. I'm not defending that sort of thinking, but i know it exists and I'm not immune to it. In fact, I regard an over-focus on one problem or part of a problem to be my great weakness. So I know how that sort of thinking arises in people, and I'm familiar with the rural/urban dichotomy that's also in play here.

Now you're mad at those guys for thinking that way, and that's OK. but please don't be mad at me for trying to be dispassionate in my analysis. This is a problem that touches on issues with how I see the world, and that means I need to be dispassionate about it in order to get past my own problems.

More than that - the payroll tax was always meant to be a temporary tax rate reduction. An extension would have long term negative consequences for the stability of the SSDI program. A permanent cut would have required cutting benefits down the line.

Which is the GOP desired result. I am surprised they didn't demand extending it. But their desire to give on nothing to Obama even outweighed their own desired outcomes.

Then I'd suggest, in the future, you preface such analysis with a disclaimer that you're not defending it - otherwise, it can too easily be interpreted that you are in fact making excuses for what should be inexcusable behavior.

Though I have to be honest and say that, sometimes your attempts to explain horrendous GOP behavior creep very close to "Well, he beat his wife that time because he didn't like the way she made dinner" - even if it may be technically and narrowly correct in one instance, it sounds an awful lot like minimizing, trivializing, and ignoring the elephant in the room - which is that some actions are so hideous the only appropriate reaction is outright condemnation - no excuses or "explanations."

Peter King near tears, threatens to quit Republican Party for blocking Sandy relief

“Boehner is the one,” the New York Republican explained. “He walked off the floor. He refused to tell us why. He refused to give us any indication or warning whatsoever… I’m just saying, these people have no problem finding New York — these Republicans — when they’re trying to raise money. They raise millions of dollars in New York City and New Jersey, they sent Gov. [Chris] Christie around the country raising millions of dollars for them. I’m saying, anyone from New York and New Jersey who contributes one penny to the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee should have their head examined. I would not give one penny to these people based on what they did to us last night.

CNN host Victor Blackwell wondered if King’s disgust over scuttling the hurricane relief was enough to make him leave the Republican Party.

“I’m going to do what I have to do,” King insisted. “I’m going to be independent minded. Sometimes, as John Kennedy said, party loyalty demands too much. And I would — as all of us do — often, you give the benefit of the doubt to your party. We are a two-party system. But I’m over that because as the very least, you’re expected to be treated fairly… When your people are literally freezing in the winter and their without food and their without shelter and they’re without clothing and my own party refuses to help them, then why should I help the Republican Party?”

The amazing shameless agililty of Congressman Peter King

HuffPo — The congressman, who is running for his sixth term, was outspoken about — among other things — the need to pay for any spending on disaster relief, an issue he has dealt with before. In 2005, he voted against a bill to help Hurricane Katrina victims because he said it cost too much at $51.8 billion. King was one of only 11 members of Congress to oppose the bill. King said last week that his vote against Hurricane Katrina relief was “a good vote” and “a principled vote.”

I wouldn't deny aid to any American, anywhere. If I felt that way, I'd have to turn in my liberal card, and I'm not about to do that.

But it does infuriate me how the NYC Metro area gets treated by people in parts of the country who would be close to eating dirt if it weren't for the tax revenue that we generate and they benefit from.

Like King said - the GOP is only too happy to come here and raise money. Maybe that is the aid that should be cut off - let them go raise money in parts of the country that they like.

The only problem with that is that most of the parts of the country that they like don't really have that much money.
