No good deed goes unpunished

You may have heard the news that 67 Republicans voted against Hurricane Sandy relief funding today.

Republicans who decided not to punish the blue states, however, will now be punished themselves by receiving a negative rating on the Club for Growth purity test: Club for Growth Will Punish Members Voting for Sandy Flood Aid.

Andy Roth

The conservative Club for Growth said Friday that it will punish House members who voted for a flood insurance measure aimed at helping pay for Hurricane Sandy’s damage.

The Club will “key-vote” the measure, using it to compile an annual rating for each lawmaker. …

“Congress should not allow the federal government to be involved in the flood insurance industry in the first place, let alone expand the National Flood Insurance Program’s authority,” a statement from the Club’s Andy Roth said.

Club For Growth=Heartless bastards.

The original Club for Growth was founded in 1999 by Stephen Moore, Thomas L. "Dusty" Rhodes, and Richard Gilder. Moore served as the first president of the original Club from 1999-2005. Current Pennsylvania United States Senator Pat Toomey served as president from 2005-2009. The current president is the former Indiana Congressman, Chris Chocola.

Club for Growth (CFG) was founded in 1999.
President/CEO: Pat Toomey (former Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania's 15th District)
Founder: Stephen "Steve" Moore
Executive Director: David Keating
Board Members: CFG President Pat Toomey, Vice President Chuck Pike, Richard Gilder, formerly Chairman of the Manhattan Institute, and Thomas Rhodes, President of National Review magazine, associated with a variety of right-wing organizations, including the Heritage Foundation.

"CFG's ex-president and founder Steve Moore has called for closing several government departments, including Education, Commerce, Labor and Agriculture."

Previously, Mr. Roth was a securities trader for an established broker-dealer in Omaha, Nebraska. At that time, Mr. Roth was also the owner and publisher for The Iron Fist of Capitalism, a website that analyzed supply-side economics and its positive effects on national politics and the financial markets.

Rebuilding destroyed infrastructure and paying legitimate flood insurance claims sound like pro-growth policies to me. If you think the feds shouldn't sell flood insurance, fine, but wanting them to delay or not pay claims is just stupid.

The Kansas, Tennessee, South Carolina, Utah and Wisconsin Republican caucuses had a majority of their delegation vote against this bill.

And check out those no votes in Pennsylvania- those are new members, aided by the redistricting there. Gerrymandering goes hand in hand with extremism.

Again, that is the road to civil war. At best, actions like that would make us into one of those countries where aid is only sent to the 'right people'. You've denounced the governments of such nations often enough, PLL. Put your anger aside and have the courage of you convictions.

25 Mattand  Fri, Jan 4, 2013 3:01:59pm

I don't like Grover Norquist. He's an unelected buffoon who has undeserved influence on our economy and properly elected officials. But his deal is he hates taxes. I get that.

Then you have Club for Growth.

There are residents of my state who are still homeless because of Hurricane Sandy. NJ's economy is going to take a beating this summer, and we already were having budget and unemployment problems. And to top all of that, NYC, the freaking financial center of the whole goddamn country, is still in desperate need of help.

And these clowns want to punish House members for voting to aid (however reluctantly) other Americans?

FUCK.

As a Tennessean whose house was made uninhabitable (and had to be knocked down and rebuilt) due to unprecedented runoff in a 1-in-500/1000 year flood back in 2010 (our house wasn't even in the traditional floodplain maps), lemme give you a hearty and well-earned fuck you, because you've been parroting this insane proposal for the past couple of days.

Me, my mom, and my brothers were made whole, in part, by assistance from FEMA, the SBA Disaster Loan Program, and the charity of a bunch of volunteers and contractors who cut us a big break; without them, we would have been fucked. That said, my mom raided her 401k for about $15,000 to supplement the $55,000 30-year loan (at 2% interest, mind you) they gave her to rebuild.

When it comes to disaster aid (among other things), we all pitch in to help each other, regardless of geography or political affiliations, because who else will?

The standard is really less about spite than it is about unreasonable demand for purity. AS is saying the whistle should be blown when someone is suggesting that "anything other than a purely (fill in your political persuasion here) is a dastardly sell-out to the evil other faction(s)!". Club for Growth. What a bunch of nonsense. It's a misnomer if there ever was one.

The whole purpose of the NFIP is for economic development in riparian and coastal areas that are prone to flooding. It allows businesses and individuals to develop property and live and work in flood-prone areas. Having that insurance builds economic value and that land is worth considerably more as a result of flood insurance.

Coastal areas allow for tourism - economic development that drives billions of dollars into communities and corporate coffers - including multinational corporations.

Some, not all. Barney Frank is still pissed

He voted consistently against fairness for LGBT people and there does not seem to be any evidence prior to his effort to become Secretary of Defense of any apology or retraction of his attack on James Hormel. And to those of us who admire and respect Mr. Hormel, Sen. Hagel’s description of him as aggressive can only mean that the Senator strongly objected to Hormel’s reasoned, civil advocacy for LGBT people.

Frank added: "I cannot think of any other minority group in the U.S. today where such a negative statement and action made in 1998 would not be an obstacle to a major Presidential appointment."

I don't think Hagel's appointment would be the end of the world or anything but I suspect he's kind of a dick.

So? I mean really, being a dick doesn't preclude anyone from getting a cabinet post.

Hagel is a decorated Vietnam veteran who served as the deputy administrator of the Veterans Administration during the Reagan administration and as the head of the USO. Hagel also co-authored the 9/11 GI bill as a senator.

They also note he has served in many private and public sector management roles, including as chief of staff to Rep. John Y. McCollister (R-NE), deputy commissioner general of the United States for the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee, and chief operating officer of the 1990 Economic Summit of Industrialized Nations (G-7 Summit) in Houston, Texas.

Hagel has also been president and CEO of the Private Sector Council, a nonprofit organization formed to assist federal government agencies, chairman of the Atlantic Council, a non-partisan think tank, co-founder and president of Collins, Hagel & Clarke, a marketing and communications firm, co-founder of Vanguard Cellular Systems Inc., one of the nation's first non-wire cellular telephone carriers, and president of McCarthy & Co., an investment banking firm in Omaha, Nebraska.

Hagel is also currently co-chairman of Obama's Intelligence Advisory Board, a member of the secretary of defense's Policy Advisory Board, and chairman of the Vietnam Veteran War Commemoration Advisory Committee.

A bipartisan group of former senators and national security officials wrote to Obama last week to express support for Hagel's nomination. That letter was signed by former Defense Secretary Frank Carlucci, former National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft, former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker, and others.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Iraq and Afghanistan Ryan Crocker also weighed in this week in support of a Hagel pick.

"Mr. Hagel would run the Defense Department; it would not run him," Crocker wrote in the Wall Street Journal. "And as America's wars abroad wind down, it is clear from his record of service to veterans -- and his own experience as one of them -- that they would receive the support they deserve after they have put their lives on the line for the country."

He sounds more than qualified to me.

Oh wait, we've got more hypocrisy from the GOPers who didn't vote for the Sandy aid. The latest?

Let's go with Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX) who has no problem telling his constituents to go and check with the NFIP for flood insurance, but refuses to fund the NFIP when it deals with #Sandy aid.

Maybe something his constituents might want to know.

A sampling from his website:

Be Informed

Know evacuation routes, and listen to local authorities when asked to evacuate. Everyone should know their risks. Whether you live in a coastal community or inland, speak with your insurance agent now about flood insurance and review your homeowner’s policy. Every state is at risk for flooding and homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage. Flood insurance is a cost-effective way to prepare financially for floods. re: #73 Gus

Privatize it!

Hurricane Ike caused as much as $16 billion in property damage, by some estimates, but the state-led insurance pool that will pay much of the cost has only $2.3 billion, leaving the Texas government on the hook potentially for billions of dollars in claims.
Insurance companies all but stopped offering hurricane coverage for property on the Gulf Coast after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 cost them billions of dollars in claims and as property values soared, raising their exposure to disaster claims.
The pullout of commercial insurance carriers forced most property owners on the coast to turn to the state-run insurer of last resort, the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association, or the wind pool, as it is called.

We looked into it the other day. As far as I know the claim about Alaska Fisheries is bogus. There are provisions in the bill for wildlife, habitat preservation and erosion control in coastal areas but no mention of Alaska fisheries. I bet if the allegedly pork-ladened "Sandy" bill had a special proviso encouraging gunz buying it would have passed with three cheers by the right wing.

Hoover gun dealer: sales up since Obama re-elected

Thomas Wright says gun sales started rising at Hoover Tactical Firearms the day after Obama was re-elected. Wright says sales went through the roof after the shootings last month at a Connecticut elementary school and that he's had to hire extra employees.

Wright says he's also seeing an increase in the number of people wanting to use the shooting range.

When he asks people why the sudden interest in firearms he says customers tell him they are afraid there will be a crackdown on gun sales.

He says the increased sales have depleted much of his supply of weapons and some types of magazines.

Poll: Spike in Palestinian support for military operations against Israel

Palestinian support for military operations against Israel has registered its most significant jump in 10 years, spurred by the recent Gaza conflict, ongoing Israeli settlement expansion, and frustration over a peace process that has been essentially deadlocked for more than four years.

The percentage of Palestinians supporting such operations has reached 50.9 percent, up from 29.3 percent in January 2011.

The change in sentiment, together with a resurgent Hamas and an uptick in Israeli-Palestinian clashes in recent weeks, underscores the risks of a continued stalemate both for Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA).

“I think if the situation continues the way it is … the Palestinian people might rise in rebellion, similar to the rebellion being waged in the rest of the Arab countries,” says Shireen Qawasmi, a mother of three in Hebron with manicured nails and a faux fur wrap. “I will carry arms and be the first one to go and fight…. We are not war lovers, but when you see your children getting killed, and your land confiscated, you are forced to fight.”

Let's take note of what Shireen Qawasmi is saying in that paragraph. The Palestinians have some legitimate issues, even if they are about to go off and do something stupid.

At this point, bring Norway, Sweden, and Finland to negotiate a fair deal. They are well respected. And put heavy pressure on them (Israel and Palestine) to remain at the negotiating table. Threaten to pull aid we give both of them if they don't keep negotiating.

And tell the Nordic Triad that we will back up any solution they figure out. In anyway necessary.

Yes, there were items for Alaska and the Smithsonian in the bill.

Alaska still has to clean up damage from the Japanese tsumani debris that is hitting their fisheries and the Smithsonian has to repair damage it suffered during the earthquake that was made worse by Sandy.

If Congress had dealt with both problems earlier instead of trying to repeal Obamacare every other day, not submitting a jobs bill, and playing chicken with the economy, neither problem would have needed addressing now.

False syllogism in my opinion. When choosing the Sec Def, it is entirely appropriate to evaluate past statements towards global hot spots to ensure that their view of those conflicts is in line with the Administration's and the majority of Americans. It is not about having offended Israel or Israelis it is about being true to America's stated position as to its steadfast support and defence of the state of Israel. I say this without regard to whether or not he is a good or bad choice.
