The cover for the recorded version of this song cycle is amazing, too.

You’ve got an ear for it, Charles.

One of my favorite things about Secret Story is that Pat doesn’t play that guitar synth with the cheesy fake trumpet sound. I’ve never understood what he likes about that annoying instrument.

An interesting article on the new Iran Sanctions

New Iran sanctions target industry in bid for deal curbing nuclear program

New U.S. sanctions have broadened the front in the West’s escalating economic conflict with Iran, targeting large swaths of the country’s industrial infrastructure even as Iranian leaders are indicating a willingness to resume negotiations on the country’s nuclear program. (lol-ed)

While some previous U.S. sanctions targeted individuals and firms linked to Iran’s nuclear industry, the new policies are closer to a true trade embargo, designed to systematically attack and undercut Iran’s major financial pillars and threaten the country with economic collapse, the officials say.

“This is effectively blacklisting whole sectors of the Iranian economy,” said Mark Dubowitz, executive director of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracy, a think tank. “The goal is to create a chilling effect on all nonhumanitarian commercial trade with Iran.”

By broadening the focus to entire industries, the new effort is intended to make it harder for Iran to evade sanctions through front operations, a time-honored practice in the Islamic republic, said Dubowitz, author of several studies on sanctions policy. “It was a game of whack-a-mole that the United States could never win,” he said.

Although I can’t find any evidence I suspect Def o’ Democracies probably wrote the legislation. You’d think that’s the kind of thing they’d put in the article.

It’s been reported on NPR that the most recent sanctions over the last 18 months have been quite difficult for the Iranians.
The less control the government has over its own money, the more the Iranian people are straining against the government.

Yet Obama just signed into law the legislation that he loves (and was possibly authored by his group). Hmmm…

But that’s less likely to bother May, since he’d rather get the bill signed than hate on Obama.

Could it be there’s some bipartisan support for toppling the mullahs? This insanity must be stopped!

Don’t understand what KT’s point is here but the tougher Iran sanctions was authored by Sen Robert Menendez, Robert (D-NJ). I believe he cooperated with Schumer, Kirk, and Liberman.

S.AMDT.3232
Amends: S.3254
Sponsor: Sen Menendez, Robert [NJ] (submitted 11/29/2012) (proposed 11/29/2012)

AMENDMENT PURPOSE:
To enhance sanctions imposed with respect to Iran.

TEXT OF AMENDMENT AS SUBMITTED: CR S7243-7246

This was an amendment to S.3254, the National Defense Authorization Act.

This included the new NDAA provisions. Obama signed “with reservations” again. Menendez has a relationship with FDD. It appears that his co-author was Mark Kirk. Some outlets report that he signed but was opposed to the tougher sanctions (citation needed). I was able to locate the following:

Statement by the Press Secretary on the Presidential Determination Pursuant to Section 1245(d)(4)(B) and (C) of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012

Today the President made the determination required under Section 1245(d)(4)(B) and (C) of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 regarding the supply of petroleum and petroleum products from countries other than Iran.

The analysis contained in the Energy Information Administration’s report of October 25, 2012, indicates that although production disruptions continue to remove some oil from the market and the international response to concerns about Iran’s nuclear activities may have increased demand for non-Iranian crude oil, production increases in other countries and weaker demand growth overall have mitigated oil market tightness to a degree.

There currently appears to be sufficient supply of non-Iranian oil to permit foreign countries to significantly reduce their import of Iranian oil, taking into account current estimates of demand, increased production by countries other than Iran, inventories of crude oil and petroleum products, and available strategic petroleum reserves. In this context, it is notable that many purchasers of Iranian crude oil have reduced their purchases or announced they are in productive discussions with alternative suppliers.
