Video: A Tribute to Huell Howser and California’s Gold

Now that’s an avocado-eatin’ dog
US News • Views: 27,384

I just posted an open thread a few days ago and mentioned Huell Howser, so the news of his death today was kind of a shock. He left a legacy of truly unique work, with a special ability to let all sorts of people tell their own stories in their own ways, without artifice, straight from the heart, loving every minute of it. You couldn’t be cranky while Huell Howser’s show was on.

He’ll be missed.

I apologize, I meant no disrespect to Mr. Howser. I got a bit excited about the Kraken video. My bad.

Huell got to swim in the pool at the Hearst Castle.
He was SO “just fell off the turnip truck” but his boundless enthusiasm was a joy. He will be missed!

That brings back memories of laying on the couch on a weekend afternoon and watching California’s Gold. He went to some of the most obscure places in the state. I’ve only explored a few places I saw on his show, there were many more that I want to see.

You know what I think was great about Huell and his show? He could make each and every one of those places look and sound just great. Two old timers at a shack near a gold mine that closed decades ago suddenly looked like a place well worth visiting. He found the beauty, the interesting everywhere he went. California just lost it’s kindest advocate.

How many media people can even come close to that?

North Korea Enlists German Help to Prepare Economic Opening

According to an article to be published on Saturday by the daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the communist regime in Pyongyang is preparing to open up the country’s economy to foreign investors. Moreover, it has enlisted the assistance of German economists and lawyers to lay the groundwork for the move.

This is interesting, especially on the heels of Google’s visit.

I was completely surprised. I slotted into my top 5 movies for 2012 for entertainment and fun and thrills. It was good for a teen movie.
Now..I thought there were many issues with the ridiculous plots lines and some acting issues and the dumb premises…
It was like watching the Truman Show, American Idol, The Gladiator and Romero & Juliet all wrapped into one.. I’d bet teens loved this movie.

The Catholic Church is going down a bad road. They are treating Women poorly at best, and seem to be trying to return things to the state of the Victorian Era.

There used to be a progressive element in the Church.

Then you had idiotic Popes like Paul VI, and evil creatures like Benedict XVI. That has wiped it out, turning it into a reactionary husk.

If only Pope John XXIII had lived another few years.

Still, it was adapted well, and the need to change out of the book’s first person perspective was put to decent use, with Donald Sutherland’s good performance as President Snow. Sutherland, interestingly, is the only actor from the movie who used one of his promo interviews to compare the trilogy’s heroine Katniss Aberdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence) to ancient gladiator turned revolt leader Spartacus. Of course, Kirk Douglas is a long-time personal friend of Donald Sutherland, so their is that.

The progressives took the wrong path though, with too many of them becoming too friendly with Communism during the 1970’s and 1980’s. They not only went against their superiors, but they also backed the losing side in the Cold War. As a result too many of the Catholic ‘further left’ ended up in a very weak position. The right side of the Catholic spectrum also got a lot better organized and both Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI have given the Catholic right strong support.

See, the Reagan like fanaticism that the Communists were automatically bad is silly.

To be blunt, our side did some truly horrific things during the Cold War. The biggest of which was our support for Pakistan during the the 1971 South Asian War. We supported a genocide on Bangladesh, one that killed 1.5 to 3 million in just 9 months. The rate of Murder exceeded even the Holocaust.

That should and will be a millstone around the neck of the US for the rest of this nation’s existence. To the USSR’s credit, they supported India in that War, and prevented us and the PRC from intervening. We should be giving aid to Bangladesh, lots of it, until we have atoned for not only letting it happen again, but then supporting it.

But, not my worry. If the Catholic Church doesn’t evolve, they become will weaken massively.

I dunno about that. There is a progressive wing in the Catholic Church and always has been; it’s just out of power.

A lot of the nuns, a lot of liberation theology priests in Latin America, etc are progressive Catholics. They’re just marginalized within the Church.

Which is why I’m laughing about the idea of the Catholic church ever truly being progressive. Liberation theology is considered a heresy by a lot of people in the Vatican and in the Church hierarchy. It will never have a major voice.

Some Communists were good people (saying ‘a few’ or ‘most’ is problematic), but Communism as practiced was a horror.

China was too damaged by its own internal turmoils in 1971 to be able to act and the US wasn’t going to mount a major intervention while still involved in Vietnam.

The liberation of Bangladesh was also the only time the Soviet PT-76 amphibious tank did well against other tanks. Against US tanks in Cambodia in 1970 and South Vietnam in 1972 (in the latter case crewed solely by the ARVN) the PT-76 was badly worsted. It’s use in Bangladesh’s rivers redeemed it, only to have it again come up short against Israel in 1973.

India was never going for a knockout in 1971. Their objective was the limited goal of ousting the Pakistani army from Bangladesh. India’s effort was not set up for a prolonged war.

Moreover, had India pressed on into what was then West Pakistan its likely that the Shah of Iran would have ordered his air force to intervene. That would have cost India its air superiority, since India’s MiG-21s would not have prevailed against Iran’s F-4 Phantom IIs.

Judge orders Catholic leaders in Los Angeles to name abusers

A US judge Monday ordered Catholic leaders in Los Angeles to identify senior church officials accused of sexually abusing children, in a move welcomed by campaigners for victims.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles immediately pledged to comply with the order by LA Superior Court judge Emilie Elias, which reversed part of a 2011 ruling.

“The archdiocese will abide by Judge Elias’ decision. We are now working with all parties involved to facilitate the release of the documents as promptly as possible,” said a archdiocese statement.

The Food Network and Bravo have shown the way - cooking reality shows.

Maybe CNN can get Ron Ben Israel to come on over for a show on competitive cakes?

CNN did get Anthony Bourdain but I seriously doubt the rest of the shows are going to be quite so cool. I’m not a TV watcher anymore but it’s sad to see there’s no market for cable news anymore. Oh well, the times they are a changin’

It seems to be just spectacle for the sake of spectacle. Piers should get some folding chairs to throw.

It works for “reality” tv shows, so I can see why a network as desperate as CNN would try it.

He’s tuned his performance to a specific (crazed) audience; Piers Morgan just did him a big favor by inviting him on.

American television and entertainment is so over-saturated with options that many of these outlets should just be allowed to die.

It’s seems sort of like the restaurant business. Restaurant: Impossible goes around trying to “save” ailing establishments that frankly ought to be plowed over by a bulldozer. Most of them fail anyway (according to the followup data.)

Time Warner wants to compete with News Corp and Comcast/Universal in news, and while CNN International can be found in about any airport and hotel in the world, I just can’t see where here in the US we need so many “news” networks that frankly don’t cover the “news” most of the time.

Depends on your expectations. Not really a great hotel. An older hotel on the north part of the strip, but not particularly luxurious. As for what its close to, its on the strip so its relatively close to everything. But in vegas it can take 15 minutes to walk between one hotel and the hotel next door so its all relative. Quite close to the big Mall and to Wynn

CNN… they already have a 24/7 news channel called HLN. I liked the old format with pure news but they have turned in a Entertaining+Light news format.
If they would turn back to pure news on HLN that would free up CNN to completely revamp the main Network. Over the years they have lost all their talent..Esp. Producers, writers and news people to the competition. They cheeped out.
Bring in experienced talented Producers and revamp the whole format..Remember the old days of Cross-fire.. Confrontational and it brought tension to the set. I’m not saying be like Fox Network but at least they have a smart format and programming skills. CNN is getting it’s ass kicked. They need to show imagination and forward thinking and hire a couple of prime time Stars to boot.

Americans want to be entertained.

That is, btw, what is so wrong with all those supposed “history” and “science” channels and shows. Rather than stimulating thinking they are about entertaining the viewer with fancy graphics and over the top assertions.

About the only territory left to be explored in American television are would be “reality” shows with competitive sex, or even un-regulated violence (as if MMA isn’t enough.)

I am sure that is part of it. This is the danger we run in having allowed the line between content providers and content creators to blur so much in the last decade or two.

Having said that..if there were REALLY a market for non-stop news reading, we would have several channels doing that. The internet and all it has wrought made that format passe. Hell, CNN was getting further and further away from it with their Headline News channel even BEFORE the vast majority of people started getting their news (breaking or otherwise) online. The fact that someone who doesn’t actually watch TV is here professing his love for that format provides a clue about its viability as well!

Yes, they thought that once George W. Bush left office unicorns would trot free across the land, and Obama would undo all the “evil acts of Bush”. As things actually happened, Obama had to confront the reality that our nation has enemies and he decided that drones were a good weapon to use to deal with those enemies whom we had to kill. But a few on the left refuse to accept that Obama has to act offensively in order to defend the nation. they can not or will not see the necessity of disrupting an enemy to protect your own people.

I wouldn’t want Henry Wallace anyhow. Ahead of his time on things like Civil Rights but he was very naive about the USSR. To his credit, he later admitted he was wrong but still.
credit not granted

Unlike Wallace, Obama did demonstrate some understanding before coming into office that anti-terrorist operations have to be thought of in terms of Minimal Harm (at best). Even then he made a point of saying that the true ‘hard core’ of the Islamist terror groups had to be neutralized either by death or imprisonment. And to some people, the idea that there are people out there who don’t have grievances that can be assuaged, people who have decided that what they feel needs to happen involves your death, is simply unfathomable.

Ultimately, as a senator Barack Obama was naive in a number of ways, but unlike Henry Wallace in the 40’s he was able to understand that sometimes the other guy is going after you because he really is evil.

I don’t know. I haven’t read enough about him to define him. I still think the kingmakers were ultimately right to decide on Truman over him for the VP spot but I think he had his heart in the right place on domestic issues and was right especially on things like race. It appears to heavily age everyone who gets the office. A lot of responsibility hanging on your head. And I expect a lot of the decisions are less bad/good as compared to trying to pick the least bad out of a set of options that all have bad consequences for people.

I was always amused by the fact that some of 60’s radicals from my parents’ generation ended up becoming more conservative than those they protested. And others who to this day are to my left. And then there are those like my folks. Stuck in the middle between those who did a complete 180 and those who stayed the same. Also equally amused by people who were right wing in the 60’s but became more left as the years went on. I guess Goldwater is somewhat an example of that but in a way I feel Goldwater really didn’t change but conservatism did.

A reality show that may never air, and I hope it doesn’t, since its far worse than anything that will ever happen on “Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo”:

A yet-to-air reality show documenting a rapper, who has fathered eleven children by ten different women, has been slammed by critics who have branded it ‘disgusting’ and ‘negative’.

All My Babies’ Mamas, set to air this spring on the Oxygen network, follows Carlos ‘Shawty Lo’ Walker, 36, as he navigates family life in an affluent suburb of Atlanta, Georgia.

But after a preview of the one-hour, fly-on-the-wall hit the internet thousands of viewers called for it to be scrapped, with many suggesting it plays on racial stereotypes.

A Change.org petition, which has more than 20,000 signatures, states that the show ‘stereotypes and demeans black children, mothers and dads’.

New York-based Sabrina Lamb, who launched the initiative explains: ‘This is not just an attack on African-American parents and children….but all parents and children.

‘As dysfunctional and violent as so-called reality shows are, could you ever imagine a one hour spectacle where 11 children are forced to witness their 10 unwed mothers clamor for financial support, emotional attention and sexual reward from Shawty-Lo, the apathetic ‘father’?’

Whilst we grind away at the resurgent derp-cano erupting from deep within the cauldron of ignorance, when I read forums related to genealogy and DNA testing I’m confronted with the reality that Americans on the whole have a real problem coming to grips with who we are, and why.

For example, often I read something like this: “Grandma’s mother was 1/2 Native American but CompanyZZZ-genetics test for me doesn’t come up with any Native American ancestry for me - they must be wrong.”

Things way too often overlooked:
1) your ancestors lied to you;
2) they didn’t really know their own background because they were lied to;
3) recombination means that any out-breeding can be covered up after just a few generations by simply the roll of the genetics dice.

Another commonly seen complaint goes like this: “I am pure European but the genetics ancestry says I’m .7% South Asian - they must be wrong”.

Here people are simply in denial - first that there are “pure” anything, and secondly and most importantly that little thing called “sex drive”, and the fact that horny young men and venturous young women have been having “hook-ups” since, well, forever, and in any of our ancestry there will be one-night-stands.

Additionally, many ancestry “paintings” are just plain misunderstood, and this is where creationism comes in. Whether or not one thinks they are a creationist it is likely there are deeply rooted creationist assumptions in your thinking. For example, that a certain group “comes from” a particular location. This harkens back to the story of the Tower of Babel in Genesis, where all the people of the Earth are divided into neatly defined groups all with associated specific geographies.

In truth we H. sapiens are highly mobile and all of us are just passing through wherever we are currently located. If we don’t physically pick up our households and move them during our generation, our genetics travel simply by having a relative going somewhere else and having children, and it is becoming clear that parts of our genome have traveled east and west across Eurasia, and even in and out of Africa, with ease.

As the saying goes - where-ever you go, there you will be. However, the sequel to that is this - where-ever you are at, you are only passing through.

Michael Nodianos ‘ashamed’ of callously joking about rape in viral video

Nodianos, 18, recently gained Internet infamy after “Anonymous” hackers released disturbing video of him cheerfully mocking the young victim, joking she was “so raped right now.” The girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in late August by two players on the Steubenville High School football team while she was unconscious.

“There’s no excuse or justification for the comments Michael made in the video and with some sober reflection he is ashamed and embarrassed to hear them himself,” attorney Dennis McNamara said at a press conference on Monday.

McNamara described the video as “disappointing, insensitive and unfortunate,” but insisted that his client was not a witness in the case. Nodianos arrived at the house while the victim was leaving, and heard about the incident from witnesses, McNamara said.

Alex Jones challenges Piers Morgan to a boxing match in bizarre interview

Morgan had hoped to talk to Jones about the White House petition he launched, which sought to have Morgan deported from the United States for speaking out against guns. Instead, Morgan received an earful about the “suicide mass murder pills” like Prozac that were being distributed to Americans and how rampaging hordes were burning down cities in the gunless United Kingdom.

“You’re a hatchet man of the New World Order,” Jones said, challenging Morgan to a boxing match.

Throughout the interview, Jones accused Morgan of focusing on “little factoids” like gun homicide rates rather than the real issues. He said assault rifles were being used repeatedly in mass shootings because they were being hyped by the media.

Near the end of the interview, Jones mockingly spoke in a British accent after being asked about the September 11th terrorist attacks.

“Hitler firebombed his own Reichstag, Piers, to bring in marshal law in Germany,” he said. “Governments have staged or allowed terrorist attacks as a pretext to invade and enslave the populations.”

With only seconds left in the interview, Jones finally explained his petition: “It’s to point out you’re a foreigner, a redcoat, here telling us what to do.”

I saw Jesus on the cross on a hill called Calvary
“Do you hate mankind for what they done to you?”
He said, “Talk of love not hate, things to do - it’s getting late.
I’ve so little time and I’m only passing through.”

Passing through, passing through.
Sometimes happy, sometimes blue,
glad that I ran into you.
Tell the people that you saw me passing through.

I saw Adam leave the Garden with an apple in his hand,
I said “Now you’re out, what are you going to do?”
“Plant some crops and pray for rain, maybe raise a little cane.
I’m an orphan now, and I’m only passing through - So are you.”

Passing through, passing through …

I was with Washington at Valley Ford, shivering in the snow.
I said, “How come the men here suffer like they do?”
“Men will suffer, men will fight, even die for what is right
even though they know they’re only passing through”

Passing through, passing through …

I was with Franklin Roosevelt’s side on the night before he died.
He said, “One world must come out of World War Two” (ah, the fool)
“Yankee, Russian, white or tan,” he said, “A man is still a man.
We’re all on one road, and we’re only passing through.”

Passing through, passing through …

Tonight’s 40k Trivia:

Adeptus Mechanicus

The Adeptus Mechanicus is the official Imperial name within the Adeptus Terra for the Cult Mechanicus or Cult of the Machine. In ancient times, before the current Age of the Imperium officially began following the end of the Horus Heresy, it was often called the Mechanicum. The Mechanicus acknowledge the Emperor of Mankind as the ruler of the Imperium of Man, but not the religious truth of the Imperial Cult or the Ecclesiarchy. Instead, the Mechanicus follows its own dark and mysterious scriptures and worships the deity they call the Machine God or the “Omnissiah.” The Adeptus Mechanicus believes knowledge is the true manifestation of divinity in the universe, and all creatures and artefacts that embody knowledge are holy because of it. The Emperor is the supreme object of worship for Mankind, the living embodiment of the Machine God or Omnissiah, because he comprehends so much, understanding more about the true nature of reality than any other being in existence. The Adeptus Mechanicus also regard organic flesh as weak and view the removal and replacement of biological tissue with mechanical, bionic parts as sacred. Most elder Tech-priests have few organic parts left and eventually become more machine than man. The Adeptus Mechanicus is based on Mars, the very first Forge World of the Imperium, and they are the sole rulers of the Red Planet. They provide the technical and scientific experts of the Imperium and field armies of massive Titans, Mechanicus Electro-priests, Skitarii and combat Servitors.

Because, for all practical purposes, there is none

That system is damn hard to control without a foregrip and lots of practice. If you look at the second video, the muzzle is at times moving visibly. Unless your are dealing with a solid mass of targets (which even most mass murderers are not), those unsteady shots are very unlikely to hit something. The people in the first video who can keep the rifle steady handle it as trained people would, and thus are effective with it. That effectiveness takes a long time and lots of money (ammo isn’t cheap) to acquire. A nut bent on going out in blaze of evil isn’t going to be able to master the skills without spending a lot more money and time than such people generally have.

Bump fire is something of a red herring, unless you are dealing with someone far more skilled than any active shooter is liable to be. Unlike actual full-auto, it cannot be effectively used to sweep fire across a wide area without firing multiple short bursts (another discipline and control skill) and firing an AR-15 at that high a rate of fire will overheat the rifle in short order.

It’s not like Obama didn’t signal his intentions before the election in 2008 either. He noted he’d go after HVTs across the border into Pakistan without permission.

The UAV program, which started under Bush, was greatly accelerated by Obama and has become far more effective and useful in the past couple of years to go after targets when we don’t have assets on the ground or don’t want to risk assets on the ground. It means we can strike at targets in Somalia, Yemen, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, among others.

Can you blame him? While it made him a fair bit of money, Lucas never could write dialog. Even American Graffiti had three screenwriters credited and I’ll bet every good bit of dialog was either written by those two or improved by the actors, because there is no way George wrote it.

Fascinating article in the New Yorker a while back about the 1960s US chemical warfare program (topical because there’s a lawsuit on behalf of the test subjects making its way through the courts).

The most striking thing to me about the whole story was the sheer amount of money that was being wasted by the program. They had guys who were clearly incompetent at best running it, and spending vast amounts of money on experiments that a complete novice could have instantly determined had no chance of working whatsoever.

It did lead me to wonder to what extent the whole conservative “government programs are wasteful” thing could be driven by first-hand experience with military spending.

So why knee-jerk into entitlement reform? There’s plenty of waste and graft that could easily be cut from defense spending. We spend more than the next dozen or so countries combined. You can’t tell me with a straight face that all of that is sensible spending or that we’re not wasting money.

re: #261 Dark_Falcon

Except it doesn’t, really. The reason it’s a problem is because various industries (primarily healthcare and insurance) have essentially bribed the government into adopting an unsustainable model for service provision, which is highly profitable to those specific industries.

If you go single-payer and devote a sensible share of the national economy to supporting retirees and those unable to work, then you essentially eliminate the problem. Spending might continue to gradually grow as a share of the economy due to relative productivity shifts, but overall quality of life would probably improve, especially for those currently underserved.

But of course this can’t happen because socialism etc.

re: #261 Dark_Falcon

Each and every one of the charts indicate that it was military spending - both part of the Iraq/Afghan campaigns and the general military buildup after 9/11 that have made bad fiscal situations far worse.

Your solution is to reduce entitlement programs that aren’t the key driver for the deficit ballooning.

Even the DoD recognizes that they’ve got to cut spending significantly. It’s just a question of where and how. But Congress doesn’t necessarily want to cut defense budgets because it affects jobs in their districts, so they fund programs that otherwise should be curtailed or even cancelled.

Look, the US has a foreign policy problem, which is essentially that it adopts a position of total paranoia vis-a-vis the outside world. It doesn’t take a genius to deduce that the whole “everybody hates us” mantra is a thinly-veiled reflection of the “we hate everybody” ideology that underpins all too much of the national discourse.

Combine this paranoia with the lack of checks on government corruption by big business and you have the Military Industrial Complex, accurately predicted by Dwight himself. Democrats and Republicans alike feed the beast.

/photo caption: Everybody fights, no one quits. On three - I declare thumb war. Loser buys lunch.

Seriously though, the Palestinian-Israel conflict isn’t going to get resolved anytime soon. The Palestinians themselves have to reconcile what they want and who they want to be. Hamas may have allowed Fatah to hold demonstrations in Gaza, but they’re still not on the same page about what they want from Israel. Hamas continues to publicly call for Israel’s destruction and armed conflict. Fatah’s been far more coy.

But even the Arab-Israeli conflict is taking a back page to the ongoing Syrian civil war, which is having a far more critical impact on the region. The war threatens to spill over into Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey. Israel’s position has been to increase security along its DMZ with Syria, and has ordered construction of a reinforced barrier to deter jihadis and others from infiltrating into Israel.

Jordan has already seen riots in its refugee camps - refugees who are without heat as the temps have fallen and snow’s in the forecast (and heavy rain for those parts not cold enough). Lebanon’s got more problems than it can handle - Hizbullah with its own machinations, and a refugee crisis to boot.

Assad’s meat grinder continues running up the body count, and there’s no end in sight. With that as a backdrop, the Arab Israeli conflict has taken a backseat - and rightfully so.

But because it’s on the back burner means that there’s an opportunity for progress via backchannels. Fatah could potentially negotiate with Israel on a new security arrangement or larger framework and Fatah could work on a deal with Hamas without prying eyes or attention. Most of the past peace deals have come not when attention is focused on the conflict, but when people are looking elsewhere. Being out of the limelight allows the sides more flexibility in dealing than they could otherwise state in public pronoucements.

re: #282 Lidane

It’s also entertaining for the GOP to claim that defense (govt) spending is about jobs, but when you create an actual govt jobs program for infrastructure they balk - saying that it’s pork or isn’t going to stimulate the economy.

Can’t have it both ways. Jobs are jobs, but some jobs add lasting value to the economy. Infrastructure jobs add value or maintain current value in the economy. Military jobs are useful - particularly on technology, but the amount of spending on the military at present is well above even what the Pentagon thinks is needed. Congress is keeping it at those inflated levels because of the jobs - even though the savings could be either passed on in the form of reduced deficits or as funds upon which infrastructure jobs could be created.

The stuff on their website is right out of a parody website like The Onion.

• The Citadel is not profit-driven. The Citadel is Liberty-driven: specifically Thomas Jefferson’s Rightful Liberty.
• Marxists, Socialists, Liberals and Establishment Republicans will likely find that life in our community is incompatible with their existing ideology and preferred lifestyles.
• The Citadel Community will house between 3,500 and 7,000 patriotic American families who agree that being prepared for the emergencies of life and being proficient with the American icon of Liberty — the Rifle — are prudent measures.
• There will be no recycling police and no local ordinance enforcers from City Hall.
• If Liberty has been missing from the life of your family, consider the Citadel for your new home.
• Our children will be educated instead of indoctrinated.
• We intend to purchase at least 2,000 acres, although preferably 3,000 acres for the Citadel Community. A minimum of one square mile will be protected within our wall and towers (640 full acres!). Ideally, up to two full square miles will be protected behind the walls (1,280 acres)!!
• The Citadel Community is to be a bastion of Liberty in America.
• Every Patriot selected to live within the Citadel Community will voluntarily agree to follow the footsteps of our Founding Fathers by swearing to one another our lives, our fortunes and our Sacred Honor to defend one another and Liberty against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
• There is no person who can claim the title, “Leader” of the Citadel, nor will there be. The only “Leader” we have is the ideal of Jefferson’s Rightful Liberty.

Lone Suspect Held in Benghazi Attack Is Freed in Tunisia

The only known suspect jailed in connection with the deadly attack on the United States diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, was freed on Tuesday by the Tunisian authorities who had held him. His lawyer said he was released for lack of evidence.

The release dramatized the negligible progress in any investigation into the attack, which killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans on Sept. 11 last year. The feebleness of Libya’s transitional government since the fall of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi has stymied any progress despite what Benghazi residents describe as an abundance of leads.

Yes, but this man was in police custody. Thus in order for him to have continued to be held, evidence of his guilt would have had to be presented. Even then it might not have done anything, since it questionable whether the prosecutors in Tunisia would have taken the risk to themselves of trying that level of terrorist.

My friends and I decided long ago not to even let the fat guy INTO the life boat in the 1st place

1) he’d take up more space
2) he’d consume more of the provisions
3) upon losing weight he’d be crankier than the skinny guys
4) upon losing weight he’d be less attractive than the skinny guys, what with all that loose skin hanging

(yes,,, these discussions were held in after hours watering holes,, why do you ask??)

That’s why I always carry my own long straw on a lifeboat.

I watched most of the Peirs Morgan/Alex Jones interview from that night. Piers did his side of the debate a disservice. The segment afterwards with David Horowitz was a stupid attempt to recover. Piers was either completely unprepared for the interview or they thought the strategy of letting Jones filibuster the entire segment was a good idea. The whole thing was poorly thought out.

This is stomach churning:

A 15-year-old in the Maldives whose father is accused of repeatedly raping her and killing the resulting baby risks being flogged for “fornication” with another man under the nation’s strict Islamic law, a police source said Monday.

In the course of inquiries into the rape case, investigators say they unearthed evidence of the girl having had consensual sex with another man, which is an offense in the Indian Ocean holiday destination, the source told AFP.

Women, including minors, having consensual sex outside marriage can be charged in the Maldives, where convicts can be publicly flogged. Minors receive the punishment when they reach 18, the age of majority.

The child’s step-father is accused by police of repeatedly raping the girl and fathering a child by her which he subsequently murdered. The girl’s mother has been charged with helping dispose of the infant’s body, police said.

“We completed the investigation (into the murder of the infant) and gave a report to the prosecutor general’s office,” Maldivian police spokesman Hassan Haneef told AFP by telephone.

He declined to give details saying that Maldivian common law did not allow the discussion of any case involving a minor.

The local Haveeru newspaper quoted an unnamed official from the prosecutor’s office saying that the fornication charge was unrelated to the rape which had been separately dealt with.

The legal system of the Maldives, a nation of 330,000 Sunni Muslims known for its coral-fringed islands and sandy beaches, has elements of Islamic Sharia law as well as English common law.

The country carries out the flogging of women despite calls from the UN Human Rights Council to drop the practice.

In September, a Maldivian court ordered a public flogging for a 16-year-old girl who confessed to having pre-marital sex. Her 29-year-old lover was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Eh, not really. It’s constitutional clarification in a high visibility case. @kinbot tracks the levels. Any gain on the Kinneret is good news since the water levels have been really down the last couple of years, and the wet season hasn’t delivered enough rain.

And as bad as the drought has been on the Kinneret, it’s magnified with the Dead Sea drying up at a faster clip (the Dead Sea gets fed mostly from what little water remains in the Jordan River after siphoned off for use by Jordan, Palestinians, and Israelis for use).

But he could have sold it to Glenn Beck for more … . .

It seems Al Gore’s staffers are a bit upset with him.

Current situation: Staffers talk about first meeting with Al Jazeera

Yesterday morning, the still shell shocked staff at Current TV was called to an all hands staff meeting at its San Francisco headquarters, which was teleconferenced to their offices in LA and NYC, to meet their new bosses.

That would be two of Al Jazeera’s top guys: Ehab Al Shihabi, executive director of international operations, and Muftah AlSuwaidan, general manager of the London bureau.

Ominously missing was the creator of Current, the self proclaimed inventor of the Internet and savior of clean energy, Al Gore, although his partner, Joel Hyatt, stood proudly with the Al Jazeera honchos.

“Of course Al didn’t show up,” said one high placed Current staffer. “He has no credibility.

“He’s supposed to be the face of clean energy and just sold [the channel] to very big oil, the emir of Qatar! Current never even took big oil advertising—and Al Gore, that bulls***ter sells to the emir?”

The meeting, while not contentious, was, according to staffers who spoke on the condition of anonymity, miserable.

The mostly left-leaning group—some still in denial —weren’t buying what Al Jazeera was selling.

And what are they selling? Al Jazeera’s image of —are you ready?— “inform, inspire and entertain!”

…The displeasure with Gore among the staff was thick enough to cut with a scimitar.

“We all know now that Al Gore is nothing but a bulls***ter,” said the staffer bluntly.

We do stories on the tax code, and he sells the network before the tax code kicked in?

“Al was always lecturing us about green. He kept his word about green all right—as in cold, hard cash!”

Ouch.

Al Gore Richer Than Mitt Romney After Current TV Sale: Forbes

The former Vice President sold his Current TV network to Al Jeezera for a reported $500 million last week, a move that will make him worth at least $300 million, according to an estimation by Forbes. That’s more than Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who is worth about $250 million, according to a September estimate from Bloomberg.

He also keeps reminding them that Twitter is a privately owned company so “free speech” doesn’t apply and the company can implement whatever rules they please, having 3K or more followers won’t protect anyone, and maybe if they stopped tweeting to ppl who don’t want to hear from them, then they’d stop getting suspended.

Naturally, it’s all to no avail. They just call him names.

They’re going to sue the guys that gave them the bailout and then turned a profit on them of $22.7b?

Their theory is what exactly? That the government shouldn’t have been able to turn a profit on their bailout? That the government imposed high interest rates?

After all, AIG could have chosen bankruptcy and liquidated or reorganized wiping all of its shareholders out in the process.

Banks routinely charge higher interest rates on those who are considered credit risks. AIG and other big banks have no problems imposing usurious rates on individuals who have poor, low, or bad credit. They whine when the government imposed what would otherwise be decent rates on them - claiming that they were too high.

Well, the suit will definitely enrich some law firms in NYC and DC, but I don’t think the suit has legs considering that AIG had essentially four options - collapse (liquidate); reorganize; be bought out; or bailout. No one was going to buy it with its ledger sheet a complete mess. Bankruptcy under either Ch 7 or 11 was a possibility, with reorganization the more likely path, but the bailout was the option that best preserved the company’s assets and allowed everyone to keep money flowing in to credit markets.

Well, it’s all about the lawyers making money isn’t it?

File some suits, put up a smoke screen, throw-out a red herring or two and buy enough time for the client to do what ever they are currently doing… .
