I’ve had fried calamari from a number of sources, but none were ever large enough to be confused with an onion ring.

That must be some squid.

In Philly there is an Italian place called “Ralph’s” that does calamari in marinara sauce *very* well. Melt in your mouth consistency (not chewy) and delicious. Not breaded either.

I also like getting squid grilled at a Greek/Med place called Dmitri’s. In that case it is often 3-5 whole 4-6” long squid mantles. Tasty. With a nice greek salad on the side and some cooked greens.

‘Hitler would be proud’ of California

The UCSF pilot project, made legal through SB 623, allows nurse practitioners, nurse midwives and physician assistants to continue performing non-surgical, aspiration abortions through January 2014. Randy Thomasson, president of SaveCalifornia.com, says this helps the abortion industry accomplish its goal.

“The abortion industry wants more death of babies. They want doctors to do it, but not enough doctors are willing these days, and so they are recruiting nurses to kill babies,” he explains. “They want to perfect this practice. I think Adolf Hitler and his henchmen would be proud.”

Seriously, he compares internship to working in a sweatshop, that a country eventually “works its way up,” which is just mind-boggling. You’ll note that China “working its way up” is why businesses are beginning to look at Africa as the next source of cheap labor.

132 engineer cat  Tue, Jan 8, 2013 4:18:02pm

i haz contacted the cat psychologist with the eksplanation of my probblim like so:

I have what I think is an unusual cat problem – I wonder if you can help me and my cat Ignatz.

Ignatz is an (about) 7 year old savannah cat, a small one. He came to live with me about four years ago. He is an outdoor cat and catches lots of rodents, mostly voles, moles, mice and rats, which the neighbors really appreciate. Although originally he got let out during the day and then would make sure to get himself let in for the night before I went to bed, this last spring he decided he wanted to be a night cat and insisted on staying out all night. He would show up for “breakfast” when I was getting ready for work, and then come in for a few hours when I was relaxing at home at night. Some rainy days he just wanted to stay at home all day, resting up i guess :-)

About a month ago his behavior changed: he can no longer tolerate being shut up in the house – even for a minute! He wants to come in and get fed and visit and play as usual, but if I close the door behind him he gets upset and sets up a yowl, scratches the door, and won’t eat. The only thing that seems to work is if I keep a door open – then he eats and visits, but he won’t settle and he keeps a close eye on the door the whole time. I have to think that he had some kind of traumatic experience getting shut up somewhere strange. He doesn’t wear a collar (breakaway collars do their job and breakaway, and I got tired of replacing them on Ignatz), so somebody might have tried to ‘help’ him.

This is already a problem, and if I have to leave town I’m not sure if my usual plan for him, having my very helpful neighbor come in and feed him, will work under this new behavior regimen.

On another of my very long running soap-boxes - I see that the EIA continues to speak with forked tongues.

They do a lot of work (well, for the few people they actually have on staff and the limited tax money Congress is willing to spend on it) in collecting data, etc.

But their “forecasts” have for a long time been exercises in obfuscation, especially about future petroleum and product prices.

Truth is the oil industry gets from the government pretty much what it wants, and the EIA just goes along for the ride.

I don’t know if it is the BBC’s fault (likely) or the UK-MET’s (and they have a history of being unable to deal with publicity wisely).

Inevitable it doesn’t probably matter, as we’re not going to do anything to seriously stop CO2 output (and this is indicated clearly in the new EIA report I just referenced). See also this:

Oil Might Be a Renewable Resource, and Other Things You Did Not Know

[…] Meet John Skvarla, new secretary of the [North Carolina] Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR, to tarheels). To cut to the chase, here’s your takeaway idea: maybe oil is a renewable resource. And he doesn’t mean in the wait-45-million-years-and-we’ll-get-more sense.

“The Russians for instance have always drilled oil as if it’s a renewable resource,” says Skvarla. “And so far they haven’t been proven wrong.

“There’s a lot of different scientific opinion on that.”

Agreed. I think Hagel’s statement, especially in context, is a common misunderstanding of the nature of terrorism. Hamas is not trying to destroy Israel because they are hopeless. They’ll continue to pursue their admitted goal regardless of hope or their own condition. Gaza is unoccupied, but they continue to smuggle rockets to launch pointless attacks, trying to instigate a conflict they will surely lose. They have hope for peace. They could chose to stop the attacks and the blockade would be lifted. The choice is theirs but they chose not to take it.

Ben Shapiro’s having another tantrum about the mean horrible liberals and their rotten bullying: Meet the ‘Bullies’: Breitbart Editor Exposes Obama’s Army of Thugs in New Book.

The left won this election because they bullied. And the right lost because they did not fight back. Now the left has trained its guns once again on the Tea Party. We’re terrorists. We’re hostage takers. We’re racists and bigots and homophobes. Why? Because we have the temerity to want government to live within its means.

The left is filled with vicious bullies. And we must not treat them with civility. In the words of Barack Obama, we must punch them back, twice as hard.

re: #127 ninja cat

It’s pretty twisted though that he was at a movie theatre, “praying” that he could use his gun. I’m almost more scared of these wannabe heroes than random nuts intent on mass murder.

Such people are far more dangerous if only because there’s so many more of them. And because the vast proliferation of guns in the hands of those who think they can use it means inevitably that more people will die unnecessarily.

Ben Shapiro’s having another tantrum about the mean horrible liberals and their rotten bullying: Meet the ‘Bullies’: Breitbart Editor Exposes Obama’s Army of Thugs in New Book.

Yes, we know.

More right wing victimhood bs. Wouldn’t be Breitbart.com without it. At least the wingnuts of past were bullying assholes and honest about that intention rather than trying to make this woe poor pitiful us.

Yes.

Thank you for clarifying it. I am suitably abashed.

I’m confused-am I a bully because I’m a liberal, or a victim because I voted for Obama?

Both, ya commie liberal fascist Islamist anything I dislike!

doesn’t it ever occur to these morons hoping for their Hero scenario that in practice they are very likely to kill or maim innocent bystanders?

or the hero himself could be killed by police. Really, it’s fantasy and treating real life as if it operates in a vacuum at its dumbest. It was pointed out earlier that there was someone with a gun at the Giffords shooting but the man wisely chose not to shoot because he knew it would only make things worse.

There are sets… and then there are sets. The UKMET always acknowledged the geographical limitations of their earlier sets of data. My understanding is that now they have various analyses they summarize. Historically though many of the denier-industry still uses the old UKMET publications.

That may be true, but I assume the HadGEM uses the HadCRUT 3 corrected data.

A pet rock has more self awareness.

“Getting your pet rock to stay: With your pet rock obediently sitting off to your right heel, say, “Stay!” in a firm but loving tone. Now, take three steps forward. If you have successfully trained your pet rock, it should not have moved.”
