Breitbrat Ben Shapiro: The Left Won Because They’re Big Meanies

A vast army of Obama thugs is viciously bullying Ben Shapiro
Wingnuts • Views: 31,743

In the Wingnut Welfare department, breitbart.com is hyping a new book by young Ben Shapiro, who’s having another tantrum about the mean horrible liberals and their rotten awful bullying, a topic that never gets old at the house that Andrew built: MEET THE ‘BULLIES’: BREITBART EDITOR EXPOSES OBAMA’S ARMY OF THUGS IN NEW BOOK!

Ben is very angry and he wants to punch someone.

The left won this election because they bullied. And the right lost because they did not fight back. Now the left has trained its guns once again on the Tea Party. We’re terrorists. We’re hostage takers. We’re racists and bigots and homophobes. Why? Because we have the temerity to want government to live within its means.

The left is filled with vicious bullies. And we must not treat them with civility. In the words of Barack Obama, we must punch them back, twice as hard.

I learned that message from Andrew Breitbart.

Yes, Ben, we know.

Professional victimhood, by Ben Shaprio and Breitbart.com. Seriously, this is the website whose namesake worked his ass off to get a woman fired for something she didn’t even do and Ben Shapiro is claiming that the left are the bullies? Projection Ben, it’s not safe, you’ll stretch your eye out.

Why yes, Ben, you are. Acknowledging that is a good first step.

There really is nothing sadder and more pathetic than bullies whining that the other guy is being mean to them.

You ever notice that the Right considers anybody who fights back to be a “bully”?

They’re like the bully in school who has finally had people (read the Democrats since Obama’s become the standard bearer) finally stood up to him and tell him that he’s a bully and they’ve had enough of his crap.

Think the only thing funnier than this was Krauthammer whining the other day that Obama has been working to get the GOP to fight amongst itself, that he’s accomplished his “goal” of starting a civil war amongst the Republican ranks.

supposed to. But yeah he did say that. He also was bitching at POTUS because “he should have known that it would be raining the night of his convention speech.” Honestly, I always thought Krauthammer’s rep as a conservative intellectual was overblown. I mean maybe he at one point wasn’t on a Limbaugh like level of derptitude but I always thought he was a hack and I get a good dosage of Krauthamemr in the WaPo.

Also noteworthy was John “Chelsea Clinton’s mother is Hillary Clinton and father is Janet Reno” McCain complaining about Obama’s tone when talking about Congress. These guys need to talk to Tom from the movie Office Space because the Jump to Conclusions Mat would be a perfect gift for all of them.

It really must be a surreal world where Sandra Fluke is a thug and bully but where Rush Limbaugh is a kindly gentleman who is only magnanimous to those he disagrees with. I really think if Limbaugh had never called her a slut, she wouldn’t be as well known. But hey Limbaugh pissed off the wrong woman and he’s paying for it.

No Ben, you (Republicans) lost the election, because in your own words, We’re terrorists. We’re hostage takers. We’re racists and bigots and homophobes. These traits due tend to turn off those of us who are moderates and tend to encourage us to cast our vote for the candidate who more closely matches our ideals. In my case, that was PBO, not the poorly programed bot your party chose to run.

Yes, somehow swimming in the ocean makes one an aristocrat. I’ll have to remember that next time I go down to the beach and see all those blue-bloods in the ocean.

Terrible analogy. It’s my understanding that the terms worked out between Grant, Lee, and some good booze at Appomattox were unexpectedly generous to Lee’s side —notwithstanding the conversion of most of Lee’s personal estate into a burial ground.

Speaking of whining, and I don’t know if Shapiro has gone in this direction yet, but one of the popular victim-hood ploys being played by the reactionary right these days is - BLACK PEOPLE!!

In this regard WND has now gone full VDARE, as in this latest post (being highlighted in the slide show at the top of the WND home page) by their racist-in-chief Colin Flaherty:

Deck the halls, and your fellow shopper, too

Black-mob violence surges during holiday period

And the bullies are everywhere. Yes, there are bullies on the right. But they are not institutional. The left keeps Hollywood conservative-rein through bullying. They keep the media liberal, even while proclaiming that Democratic hacks like George Stephanopoulos are objective journalists. They use the university system to bully conservative students into silence and to brainwash students into buying their thug politics. They use extra-governmental organizations like Media Matters, who coordinate with the Obama White House, to do the dirty work of astroturfing boycotts of conservative institutions.

In my experience, most of those I’ve met who support such laws are the elder generations, the ones who grew up hearing about homosexuals being locked up for mental illness and being taught to look for signs of homosexuality in those around them. To believe that homosexuality is an illness that not only hurts the sufferer, but those around them. That those who profess to be gay are simply “misguided” and need to be taught how to act right in civil society. And that homosexuality is a risk-taking behavior, with AIDs being a “gay disease” and there being all sorts of medical maladies that come from such a lifestyle.

Yeah it is a generation thing I agree and it’s why I think younger people today even more conservative ones are more inclined to libertarianism than conservatism. If conservatism dropped the stupid anti gay crap, maybe but I think So-Cons turn a lot of people off of conservatism.

I’m still trying to figure out what “astroturfing boycotts of conservative institutions.” means. Am I that out of touch?

I’ll take a stab here. I think he’s saying that they spring up boycotts of conservative organizations. Nice projection on his part considering that conservative groups like Concerned Women for America urge boycotts for crimes like having an out lesbian as a spokesmodel for a company. Hell they even admitted that Ellen’s problem was that she was too “nice” and that was hiding her insidious ties to the gay agenda. Or the freak out over rainbow Oreos. Can’t beat that. At least people are boycotting Chik-a-Filay for a decent reason.

True, but I don’t entertain for a minute the idea that libertarians are just looking for the GOP to become more progressive. If anything, most I’ve talked to are the exact opposite, that they think the GOP to be “Democrat-Lite” and have gone libertarian as a form of protest.

Earlier today, in an abbreviated legislative session because of the Joint Session of the Legislature for Governor Christie’s State of the State Address, liberal New Jersey Democrats managed to introduce 18 new Gun Control bills in an effort to further deprive you of your 2nd Amendment right.

“Further” deprive?

Them goddamned hippies and communards have already deprived us of our machine guns, mortars, ANFO and even rifle grenades. Now they’re coming after the little stuff!

How do you further deprive a right when gun ownership is at a historical high? Gunownership has gone up under Obama. Granted not really because of Obama’s policies about guns but because of people like this freeper who are convinced that Obama’s going to come for his guns. So he buys more. Just like those like him did in the Clinton years when they were convinced that Clinton was taking away their guns. This is how we get the hoarders.

Thing is, from all I’ve seen, identifying oneself as “Libertarian” is more of a protest thing than an actual political identity. A way of saying “Neither party fulfills my beliefs, so I’m going with the next best choice.” Not that the Libertarian Party’s in any rush to burst their bubbles, because this is probably the most relevant they’ve been in ages.

A principled libertarian would be against oppression by both federal and state governments. This seems to be a relatively rare flavor of libertarian.

The bought libertarians are mainly focused on getting the Feds to deregulate business. Getting rid of state-level regulation is usually a lower priority for them, since big business often benefits from being able to buy influence at the state level.

Judge: Army GI in WikiLeaks illegally punished

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) — An Army private suspected of sending reams of classified documents to the secret-sharing WikiLeaks website was illegally punished at a Marine Corps brig and should get 112 days cut from any prison sentence he receives if convicted, a military judge ruled Tuesday.

Army Col. Denise Lind ruled during a pretrial hearing that authorities went too far in their strict confinement of Pfc. Bradley Manning for nine months in a Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va., in 2010 and 2011. Manning was confined to a windowless cell 23 hours a day, sometimes with no clothing. Brig officials said it was to keep him from hurting himself or others.

Lind said Manning’s confinement was “more rigorous than necessary.” She added that the conditions “became excessive in relation to legitimate government interests.”

There really is nothing sadder and more pathetic than bullies whining that the other guy is being mean to them.

Their problem is that bullies can’t win in a democracy with a well informed electorate. And we DO have a democracy and our electorate only gets better informed over the years.

And what do you call people who ran on a platform of:
1) stealing granny’s retirement money
2) denying granny her medicine
3) denying the poor the chance to have health insurance
4) quoting a tiny fraudulent minority of right wing economists so that they can have an excuse for starving granny. Scream that debt will make the sky fall even though the actual economists say “no”.
5) spending more on the military
6) denouncing a billion Muslims (see Newt’s statements) while starting another war in the middle east
7) ending environmental protection
8) ending education standards
9) hating gays for the family (is that different from raising your children to hate - it sounds like it to me)
10) hating women for controlling their own vaginas…
The word bully kinda jumps out at you

It’s almost comforting that they are incapable of stopping the projection and seeing what they’re doing honestly - they can’t win while making themselves ever more rediculous and pathetic

I really think if Limbaugh had never called her a slut, she wouldn’t be as well known. But hey Limbaugh pissed off the wrong woman and he’s paying for it.

No, it has little to do with who Sandra Fluke is. The actual fact is that Limbaugh and his ilk are so far over the edge that he’s beyond the pale to a general audience. He screamed “slut” 1000 times a day. So he lost all the advertisers who care about a general audience. And in the same way the Republican party is making itself beyond the pale to the general voter.

This process has little to do with who their opponents are. Their opponents are normal people. They are no where near normal. And that’s obvious.

I asked in a thread early today about where rinsing works into the process when you want to toast as well. Toast, then rinse, then cook? Or rinse and then toast? (The latter having the complication about whether you need to dry it after rinsing and before toasting.)

Ubuntu comes with Gnome, but it ain’t hard to install KDE or Xfce.

re: #140 prairiefire

Manning was mistreated.

The quinoa was a bit of a fuck off, as with most of my first attempts. Toasted it first, you have to smell them in a spoon, they are so tiny. Oh, maybe I should have rinsed them! Rinsed the already toasted in my colander with holes apparently too big for Quinoa and lost 1/2 down the drain. Checked the bag from the store, they looked fine. Added enough back in to match the 1.5 chix broth. Boiled, simmered, and left for 10 minutes to get fluffy. It was good!

Rinsing can be a problem. I don’t find it necessary with the white varieties of quinoa. Red Quinoa, which still has the outer hull attached, does need some rinsing. If you look around the produce section of your local mega-mart you can often find “produce bags” which are fine mesh bags for storing veg but they also make a great device for rinsing quinoa without losing too much seed.
Keep trying, you’ll get the hang of it.

You are what you eat, and more:

Diet, Exercise? Maybe That 170 Lb. Perfect Woman Of 100 Years Ago Just Had Good Genes

[…]

High-calorie diets containing high levels of fat and sugar, along with sedentary lifestyles, have conspired to make 36% of American women look like the perfect woman of 1912 but new UCLA research also says that body-fat responses to food are strongly inherited and linked to our DNA. So maybe Elsie Scheel, “the perfect woman” of 100 years ago, just got lucky.

[…]

The study detailed metabolic responses to a high-fat, high-sugar diet in a large and diverse mouse population under defined environmental conditions, modeling closely what is likely to occur in human populations. The researchers found that the amount of food consumed contributed only modestly to the degree of obesity.

“Our research demonstrates that body-fat responses to high-fat, high-sugar diets have a very strong genetic component, and we have identified several genetic factors potentially regulating these responses,” said first author Dr. Brian Parks, a postdoctoral researcher at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. “We found that obesity has similar genetic signatures in mice and humans, indicating the mice are a highly relevant model system to study obesity. Overall, our work has broad implications concerning the genetic nature of obesity and weight gain.”

Genes and obesity: Fast food isn’t only culprit in expanding waistlines — DNA is also to blame

Researchers at UCLA say it’s not just what you eat that makes those pants tighter — it’s also genetics. In a new study, scientists discovered that body-fat responses to a typical fast-food diet are determined in large part by genetic factors, and they have identified several genes they say may control those responses.

The study is the first of its kind to detail metabolic responses to a high-fat, high-sugar diet in a large and diverse mouse population under defined environmental conditions, modeling closely what is likely to occur in human populations. The researchers found that the amount of food consumed contributed only modestly to the degree of obesity.

The findings are published Jan. 8 in the online edition of the journal Cell Metabolism and will appear Jan. 9 in the print version.

[…]

Dietary responses, as assessed by the body-fat percentage increase during high-fat, high-sugar feeding, varied widely among the strains, with increases in body-fat percentage ranging from 0 to more than 600 percent in the various strains of mice. Most strains responded during the first four weeks of the high-fat, high-sugar feeding and did not accumulate additional fat during the remainder of the study. This suggests an upper body-fat set-point whereby continued gain in body fat is resisted by genetic mechanisms, the researchers said.

Additionally, “We observed high heritability of about 80 percent for body-fat percentage across the study timeline,” said principal investigator Dr. Jake Lusis, a professor of medicine and human genetics and of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics at the Geffen School of Medicine. “Changes in body-fat percentage after high-fat, high-sugar feeding were also highly heritable, suggesting that dietary responses are strongly controlled by genetics.”

re: #144 Feline Fearless Leader

I asked in a thread early today about where rinsing works into the process when you want to toast as well. Toast, then rinse, then cook? Or rinse and then toast? (The latter having the complication about whether you need to dry it after rinsing and before toasting.)

For me: White quinoa: Just toast and cook.
Red Quinoa: Rinse, Toast (optional), then cook.
I really like the red quinoa. It has a lot more flavor but it can be very expensive. $6-7 per pound. It’s what I grow in my garden but it’s too expensive to buy in the store.

I would think the greatest danger in having genetic information is that insurance companies will make decisions about who is insurable based on information they don’t understand.
That said, there are people who don’t want to know if they have a genetic disease (For example, there was a Huntington’s disease researcher who didn’t have the test she helped developed because she didn’t want to know) Personally, I think I would want to know, but it would be hard to make the decision for someone else, such as an infant.

When Discussing the Second Amendment, Keep the First in Mind Too

By Jay Carney, White House Press Secretary

Thank you for participating in We the People to speak out on an issue that matters to you.

Let’s not let arguments over the Constitution’s Second Amendment violate the spirit of its First. President Obama believes that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. However, the Constitution not only guarantees an individual right to bear arms, but also enshrines the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press — fundamental principles that are essential to our democracy. Americans may disagree on matters of public policy and express those disagreements vigorously, but no one should be punished by the government simply because he or she expressed a view on the Second Amendment — or any other matter of public concern.

He doesn’t have a problem with this but there’s a boat load of wingnuts gonna be pissed in the AM.

Just over half of all gun-related deaths in the United States are suicides,[8] with 17,352 (55.6%) of the total 31,224 firearm-related deaths in 2007 suicide deaths, and 12,632 (40.5%) homicide deaths.

If they are in fact children, then yes. But the ‘child’ who is a 16-year old gang member killed in a turf war should really be labeled as gang member killed during the course of criminal activity. And yes, the stats are skewed by counting decisions such as that.

I don’t know him, so I can’t say. It might have been culture shock. Most people who go to other nations *on something other than a resort or ‘party’ vacation) come back with a better understanding of how other parts of the world live and think. But a few people who are exposed to the kinds of extreme cultural differences between places like the US and Afghanistan recoil angrily and and decide that ‘those people’ are simply bad.

Just my 2 cents, take it for what its worth.

Where in discussing the fact that the CDC reports that In 2010, guns took the lives of 31,076 Americans in homicides, suicides and unintentional shootings do you get the idea that I am not troubled by other types of preventable deaths?!?!? We can multitask here. I just have a serious problem when Dark or anyone else tries to minimize this number.

Also, I don’t see anywhere I (or anyone else on LGF) wished for 300,000,000 guns to disappear.

FYI Burglary and robbery aren’t interchangeable terms. Burglary is strictly a property crime and doesn’t require the victim to be home. Robbery, by definition, involves an element of intimidation, threat or physical force to be applied directly to the victim.

Jordan got home at about 2-3am in Camp P. We thought it would just be family there screaming with joy.. ( 1000 people louder than an NFL Stadium..Such joy I’ve never Expeirenced 0
There was an ex-cowboy player that has dedicated his life to helping our combat Vets. that met every Marine at 3am and told them he’d love to invite them to spend time together. I think all those guys signed up to spend time with a famous NFL player.. ( who wouldn’t ?)

We talk about it all the damn time, and pass all kinds of laws and regulations to address those issues.

There’s a reason Pinto gas tanks don’t explode anymore, and cars have crumply front ends to absorb the force and reduce the odds of the passenger compartment squishing, there’s seat belt laws and air bags and stronger metal alloys and increasingly strict drunk driving standards… in the 1960’s we used to have 50,000 people a year die in car wrecks, now with double the population driving double the miles we have less than 2/3 as many deaths.

Cigarette taxes are high enough to drastically reduce the odds of kids being able to start smoking in the first place, there’s warning labels and age limits and billboards and TV spots and magazine ads and on the side of buses trying to urge people to quit and you can’t smoke in restaurants or department stores or office buildings or public elevators and there’s even some state and city programs to help people quit smoking.

Tonight in 40k Trivia:

Rogue Traders

Rogue Traders are unique and powerful human individuals who serve as a combination freelance explorer, conquistador and interstellar merchant for the Imperium of Man. They are hereditary Imperial servants and nobles, given a starship, a crew, and sometimes a contingent of Space Marines (in very rare cases) or Imperial Guardsmen and carte blanche to roam those worlds of the galaxy that still lie beyond Imperial control or knowledge. In their task of exploring and exploiting the still-uncharted regions of the galaxy, Rogue Traders might come across worlds harbouring long-forgotten human civilisations which will be later incorporated into the Imperium by official Adeptus Mechanicus Explorator fleets and expeditions of the Imperial Navy and Imperial Guard. Other times they find empty or alien-dominated planets ripe for colonisation, conquest or exploitation by the Imperium.

If they are in fact children, then yes. But the ‘child’ who is a 16-year old gang member killed in a turf war should really be labeled as gang member killed during the course of criminal activity. And yes, the stats are skewed by counting decisions such as that.

They’re still dead.

I realise that you don’t in fact give a shit about how many people, children or not, are killed by guns. I realise that in your mind they are all acceptable losses in order to satisfy the fantasy of America somehow looking tough and heavily armed, and the even cooler fantasy of gun battles in the street between the bad guys and other gun battles between bad guys and good guys with white hats. Incidentally, this makes you a gun nut whether you own a gun or not. And given that you are a gun nut, the purpose of this post is not to debate with you, because debating with wingnuts and cultists is pointless.

The purpose of this post is to reiterate the baldly obvious - that judging that some deaths are ‘acceptable’ because the dead people are ‘bad’ (a percentage which, even if it were true, is very much smaller than you fantasise it is) is not only morally tenuous and unprincipled, but also beside the point. This is a civilised nation, not one that separates its citizens into lesser folks who need killin’ and fine folks from good stock. And the vast majority of these deaths are preventable. They are unnecessary deaths because civilian guns are unnecessary. Having lots of guns around does not change the rate of other crimes significantly - good folks are not suddenly helpless in the face of the monstrous raving criminals you imagine lurk everywhere. Having lots of guns around simply makes more people get shot. And killed. The end. Having them around means that people get shot even when they’re not where they’re supposed to be, like the two kids above, who in a society that didn’t practice human sacrifice would probably be in custody or serving juvenile probation somewhere, but instead are dead because someone executed them. Someone who fantasised about using his guns to ‘defend’ himself, even against two unarmed and wounded teenagers.

You don’t need to be a wingnut to be an anti-vaxxer, though. Being against vaccine science is a sign of a mind in flight from reality. The reason reality became too difficult to deal with can vary, as can the political beliefs of the conspiracist.

And if this wife and mother would not have been able to defend herself and her children when a thug broke into her home. And she didn’t go looking for a fight, she hid in a crawlspace only to have the thug find her and and her children. Having a gun saved her from being attacked and possibly killed and prevented her children from being at the very least traumatized.

So, yes, I’ll take the risk of someone being an asshole murderer like that scumbag in Minnesota (and he’s gonna get life, no parole) in order to ensure that honest people can defend themselves. I make no apology for that.

Wingnuts are complaining that this story is not being reported by “liberal media” but it is a rallying cry for the MOAR GUNZ crowd. I have some questions about this story:

1. She shot the intruder 5 times at close range but he’s still alive?
2. Why would a burglar go deeper into a house to confront somebody hiding in a crawlspace? Usually a burglar wants to grab stuff and get the fuck out, they don’t want to cut off their escape route.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I guess that getting skewered by Jon Stewart and others for refusing to fund the NFIP while demanding federal assistance for their own districts has taken its toll (either that, or it was the taxpayer funded trip to the NYC metro area to view the damage first-hand?) :

It shouldn’t have to come to that, but at least he’s now on the record as supporting the Sandy reconstruction aid package.

1. People have survived more gunshots than that and lived to tell the tale. Paul Slater (the intruder) was in excellent condition and thus had a better chance to survive (he’s not dead, I would not say some one on a ventilator is in excellent condition, hence the past tense).

2. Why Slater acted as he did isn’t not know currently. Perhaps if he recovers we will learn more.

Flew in last night, checked into the hotel, and started to explore this city a little bit. I even managed to meet up with a grad school classmate and her husband for a late dinner. I can see why people keep coming back to Vegas. There’s so much to do all the time you almost feel obligated to return and try to do more.

Good thing I’m not a gambler. Being stuck in a casino actually seems like the most boring option around here.

I’m going out on a limb here and saying the woman in this situation was not experienced with firearms. The 911 call has her husband yelling at her to shoot him again and again, I’m not sure where he was while all this was going on. It’s been all over the news here in metro Atlanta, but I never heard why the guy broke in or where the husband was during the 911 call. I’ve been kinda busy with my Dad being in the hospital and haven’t been focused on the story.

So, in a bit of sports news, it seems that Celtics player Kevin Garnett got under the skin of Knicks player Carmelo Anthony. Garnett said something about Anthony’s wife and that led to both an on the court scuffle and a potential fracas after the game but for security intervening.

Why do I think what was said was along the lines of - do you have naked pictures of your wife? No? Wanna buy some? /

Oh, and today we find out who gets their call for Cooperstown. It’s a pretty heady field, including Barry Bonds, Mike Piazza, Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, and Kurt Schilling. All players who put up monster numbers or had tremendous clutch performances over a number of years. Of course, a few are indelibly linked to PEDs, so it will be interesting to see how the voters parse things out. We’ll get the first take on that later this afternoon.

Certainly sounds like it. Contrast this with Adam Lanza, oh-so-well-trained by his gun-nut mother, who managed to kill nearly everyone he shot within minutes. And given how inexperienced this woman in Atlanta seemed to be, the situation could have easily turned tragic had the intruder been able to get the gun from her (and I’d like to see stats on how often that happens - a homeowner’s gun being used against them - versus them using it successfully for self-defense)

Speaking of successful self-defense, I want to see development of an instantly incapacitating but non-lethal weapon, like the tranquilizer guns wildlife officers use. But why do I have the feeling something like that is restricted as all hell, while flesh-ripping ammo is as easy to get as candy?

The reason traq rounds are restricted is twofold:

1. Fear that they might be misused as a way to quickly deal with someone who is merely being obstreperous. “Pissed at your neighbor for yelling at you over your music? Traq him, problem solved.” This is a comparatively minor concern, however.

2. The bigger concern is that such rounds would be misused to incapacitate people in order to abduct or exploit them, and the danger here is mostly to women. Traq rounds could become tools in a rapist’s arsenal to knock out his victim or at least prevent her from resisting.

The other problem with traq rounds is that they are easily defeated by something like a thick coat. Firing a projectile at someone coming at you that does not kill or seriously wound him is worse than useless, since all you’ll have done is piss him off.

That’s not what I mean. You’re right that strong evidence exists to support evolution, far stronger than the evidence for any other explanation for speciation. That’s why I believe in evolution myself. But most people don’t know about much of the evidence and do not know how to use the evidence they do have to full effect. So they aren’t able to argue the case for evolution effectively.

Another issue is that the sheer monomania of a wingnut (or moonbat) sometimes wins arguments all by itself. The wingnut simply DERPs out talking points till other people simply either drop the topic or give the wingnut some level of agreement out of frustration. Here at LGF we don’t have that problem most of the time, because monomaniacal posters typically fall afoul of Charles and/or Stinky and then get booted.

This is absolutely not true, Dark. The simple, obvious case for evolution gets made time and time again, and the GOP and their science-denying crowd don’t pay attention or respond with the same old lunacy.

Same thing with climate change.

It is dangerous and foolish of you to blame the people giving the explanation rather than those knee-jerk rejecting it because of blind adherence to the anti-science ideology that has become embedded in the ‘conservative’ ideology in this country.

If those things can penetrate the hides of animals like rhinos and elephants, and the thick fur coats of bears, I’m sure they could work around clothing. And it’s not as if murderers can’t protect themselves from regular bullets, anyway.

In other words, no, your “guns are better than non-lethal weapons” doesn’t hold water, nor the implication that we’re justified in regulating tranquilizers more heavily than lethal ammunition.

The FBI unified crime stats breaks down criminal activities and homicides by the type of implement used.

This is one such FBI statistical breakdown.

But as you note from the FBI stat - it takes into account all blunt instruments - clubs, hammers, etc. but breaks out different kinds of firearms: rifles, shotguns, handguns, and weapons of unknown type.

Total firearms for 2011 - 8,583
Handguns firearms for 2011 - 6,220
Rifles firearms for 2011 - 323
Shotguns firearms for 2011 - 356
Other guns firearms for 2011 - 97
Firearms, type not stated firearms for 2011 - 1,587
Knives or cutting instruments firearms for 2011 - 1,694
Blunt objects (clubs, hammers, etc.) firearms for 2011 - 496
Personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, etc.)1 firearms for 2011 - 728

So, they take one statistic out of context, and make it appear that the problem isn’t a certain kind of firearm. The most prevalent kind of weapon used in committing homicide is a handgun. It’s nearly 50% of all homicides by itself. Rifles are often used in mass casualty attacks, but it’s not the most common weapon used in homicides.

re: #360 Interesting Times

More reasons then: Unlike the lead or bismuth alloys used to produce bullets, traq drugs are controlled substances. The ATF is also barred by act of Congress from treating the ‘smokeless power’ of modern firearms as an ‘explosive’ in terms of licencing, while access to controlled traq drugs remains subject to a thicket of controls.

Also, traq drugs don’t work instantly, and even a 5 second delay can give an attacker time to cut your throat. A .45 ACP round, by contrast, will knock him off his feet right away.

A .45 ACP round, by contrast, will knock him off his feet right away.

Assuming:
1) Your attacker makes himself known like the characters in video games do…apparently, a majority of attackers employ stealth methods (Hiding behind cars, trees, walls, etc. and laying in wait for their victims, or sneaking up on them in the dark…from behind.).
2) You know what you’re doing with a .45 (most people don’t…yourself included by your own admission)
3) You’ve been trained in how to use a firearm in close combat…requires a bit of martial arts most likely.
4) You don’t miss.

re: #381 Dark_Falcon

I don’t think it helps the logic. It just explains the practicalities. RWC has dealt with the issue of non-lethal weapons and the reasoning behind their restrictions extensively and the way the laws are written is a point he talks about often.

We’re talking about changing law, so talking about current law as a barrier is kind of silly. People are not going to guy and buy tranq bullets, cut them open, and access the tranqs that way, not when they can buy the shit on the street for a fraction of the price.

389 palomino  Wed, Jan 9, 2013 7:19:25am

re: #376 Dark_Falcon

More reasons then: Unlike the lead or bismuth alloys used to produce bullets, traq drugs are controlled substances. The ATF is also barred by act of Congress from treating the ‘smokeless power’ of modern firearms as an ‘explosive’ in terms of licencing, while access to controlled traq drugs remains subject to a thicket of controls.

Also, traq drugs don’t work instantly, and even a 5 second delay can give an attacker time to cut your throat. A .45 ACP round, by contrast, will knock him off his feet right away.

Now you’re just throwing everything but the kitchen sink into the argument.

Until the wingnuts get over their erotic fixation on firearms (and the knee-jerk defense of them in all cases), we won’t make any progress on this issue. And the absolutist view that “they’re coming to take all my guns” is an absurd paranoid delusion that your party fosters. I don’t know how many more Newtowns and Auroras and Virginia Techs it will take, but more mass shootings will probably lead us to a tipping point eventually. Assault rifle legislation wasn’t even on the radar two months ago; Newtown changed that. Now imagine the impact of more Newtowns going forward. Even the NRA is on the defensive. A civilized nation will at some point demand some sort of action in the face of unparalleled (in the developed world) slaughter of civilians.

I remember a scene from I think Desperado where the Antonio Banderas character pulls out a knife against a gun brandishing bad guy.

The bad guy says “you dumb son of a bitch, bringing a knife to a gun fight”

Then Banderas presses the button on the (ballistic) knife and the blade impales the guy in the throat before he can even get a shot off.

We lose far more people every fucking year to these preventable deaths but right now that’s not acceptable to talk about, is it? Because those Ebil gunz cause every bad death in america and if we wish hard enough they’ll all magically disappear and no one will ever die from a stupid cause ever again.

Sorry but even believing in God I can’t swallow that level of magical thinking.

Cars surge a useful everyday purpose not related to killing things unlike guns.

Also right now you need to undergo government regulated tests before you can legally drive a car or pratice medicine but not before you can own a gun….

Let’s focus on th unregulated killers that serve no useful purpose before we worry too much about those things that kill only as an unwanted side effect….

For passwords, they tell you not to use the same one for different sites, but one way to get around that and still have something easy to remember is to tack on the name of the service, e.g.

[mypassword]LGF
[mypassword]Yahoo

(though it goes without saying that the [mypassword] portion should be something extremely hard for others to guess, and maybe you could do things to change the spelling of the service, e.g. Yah0o)

There are two other Obdicuts out there, and a few other Obidicuts. I don’t actually want to be anonymous; I’ve said my real name here and enough other stuff to piece me together. I use the nic more to make a point about communication on the interwebs than an actual mask.

I weirdly have a horror of fame, though. Last night, I went to see a documentary at the IMF theater here in NYC about Sicilian pupeteers, with John Tuturro in it. Afterwards, they had a Q&A with John Tuturro and the director, a man named Pasca. After that, we adjourned to a bar, but Tuturro didn’t come. The director got to make the cool movie and then talk to fans casually, not worried they’d start stalking him or obsessively talk about his past projects. Tuturro couldn’t, he would have been swarmed.

It’d be fucking terrible to be famous. A lot of the bizarre behavior of stars I think is because of that inability to ever get peace in public.

I started as darthstar99 on Yahoo chat in 1998 (some asshole already took darthstar). Became darthstar on Slate in 2000, kept it on dKos, used it on RedState for a week until I was banned for comparing Bush’s lies to Clinton’s fellatio, on a craigslist forum where local friends meet to talk about food & shit, and here.

It’s even on my photobucket account - which sometimes gets questions from my facebook friends if I link a pic on Photobucket instead of reuploading.

Nothing in that incident revealed her to be untrustworthy. She didn’t go looking for trouble, she tried to avoid it, and only fired as a last resort. She didn’t mishandle the gun and in a high stress situation hit 5 out of 6 times. And when Paul Slater retreated she did not pursue, but stayed with her children. That’s about as trustworthy and responsible as it is possible to be.

Maybe she could have loaded hollow point rounds and killed Slater, but in that case some people here would likely be complaining about that and calling her a zealot or a ‘Rambo’.

Bottom Line: Attacker stopped, mother and children safe, mother followed all laws and acted responsibly.

Easier, but not more secure if a serious hostile system is after you. We had to make up our own passwords and submit them for testing, and that only got us into the lowest level network. Tranq dosages are also specific to body weight, age, sex, etc. There is no “one size fits all.” One tranq might make someone sleepy and groggy (and still armed), while another might well send him into cardiac arrest.

Yesterday i suggested that it was difficult to believe that conservatives were opting for government funded heath care solutions for mental illness rather than legislation that may limit in any way their 2nd amendment rights. Well just like clockwork it does appear that they may not have the same thing in mind that many of us imagine when we think of mental health care.

I suspect that most of these folks would prefer to see a health care system more like this (content warning - may be offensive to some)….

Easier, but not more secure if a serious hostile system is after you. We had to make up our own passwords and submit them for testing, and that only got us into the lowest level network. (The big vulnerability was still human—password sharing and such.) The crap that Manning pulled should have been no surprise.

Northern Florida just got something scarier than wingnuts:

Jacksonville, FL —

A warning to stay out of the ocean in Jacksonville Beach.

GPS tracking by the Ocean Research Group has discovered two Great White Sharks. The group even names the sharks.

“Mary Lee” was tracked to the Jax Beach surf zone around 12:46am Tuesday. She is 16 ft long, nearly 3500 lbs. She was first tagged in September in Cape Cod.

The other, named “Genie”, was tracked around 50 miles off the coast of Jacksonville. She weighs in nearly 2300 lbs, 14 ft 8 in long. She was also tagged in Cape Cod in September.

This is Mary Lee last year being tagged:

I still don’t get why so many people care what other consenting adults are doing. I can see being uncomfortable with public displays of affection-but I’m not really a fan of anyone overdoing that.

Because they are religious fanatics that believe, quite literally, that God will take away our status as His Favored Nation if we allow Teh Gayz to get married.

Full stop, no exceptions. This is why it is impossible to reason with these people, and why they make comparisons of homosexuality to pedophilia or people marrying trees or animals. Their reasoning is not based on any logical understanding of what marriage is or is not in our present society, it is based entirely on irrational fear of an invisible skydad that will be very angry with them if they let the homos live in peace.

Bullets damage Ga. Muslim house of prayer

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. —

Authorities in Fayetteville say a Muslim house of prayer has been targeted in a shooting.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ([Link: bit.ly…] reports an alarm was triggered around 2 a.m. Tuesday the house of prayer on Flatt Creek Trail, and when deputies arrived they saw that four windows had been damaged by bullets. Police told the newspaper the privately owned building is not a mosque.

Authorities have not determined whether the incident is a hate crime and say no one was inside the building at the time. Police say other buildings near the house of prayer were also damaged by bullets, and authorities are asking for help from the public for information on the incident.

30K is an overestimate, and not a small one either.

It is not an overestimate. That’s wishful thinking on your part, totally unrelated to the facts.

Gun deaths by homicide, suicide or accident peaked at 37,666 in 1993 before declining to a low of 28,393 in 2000, the data show. Since then the total has risen to 31,328 in 2010, an increase of 2,935, or eight more victims a day.

More at Bloomberg…

If anyone wants actual stats you can find them at the CDC. Here are the search results for firearm deaths 2010. The 8th item in the results was the National Vital Statistics Reports, Volume 60, Number 4 (PDF), which provides numbers for 2009.

Realizing that the data I wanted would be found in “National Vital Statistics Reports” I searched for that, and the very first result took me to exactly what I wanted, a page with reports from as far back as the ’90s up until the present. The reports can be quite long, but all you have to do is press “ctrl + F” in Acrobat to bring up the search box, then enter firearms.

This isn’t rocket science, D_F. Pull your head out of the sand and face the facts instead of crying “foul” because you don’t like the numbers.

Yeah, there’s a few people complaining that there’s no way you can mint a $1t coin because it would be the size of the Titanic if minted in platinum. That, of course, ignores that the government can set the value of a piece of paper or coin at whatever denomination it sees fit. The Mint sets the price of a coin of a certain size as a quarter dollar, but the value of the actual metal is a few pennies (it’s actually most cost effective for the mint to strike a quarter than a penny, which is an argument to eliminate the penny from circulation due to costs to make).

In a lot of ways I agree. However, that was my “neck of the woods” less than six months ago. (Lived in Dalton, moved to Ft Oglethorpe, had business that kept me running to both plus Lafayette, Chatsworth, and Calhoun.)

There are a handful of Islamic worship centers in that corner of the state, and every one of them has had to deal with harassment and vandalism. Oh, and the occasional weapon-based threat.

Based on my knowledge I’d guess the damage to other property was due the shooters knowing it was “one of those” or spraying during a drive-by.

Yes, let’s give it the 24 hour, but I’m going to guess the core is right — it’s a wild attack that was aimed, at core, at “those terrorists.”

If you are ‘of the left’ and have come to believe that “freedom of speech” means the right to silence someone else, then you’ve gone so far around the bend as to meet the people wanting to deport Piers Morgan.

Free Speech means you get to speak, it does not mean you get to stop the other person (or corporation, for that matter) from speaking.

It makes sense, from an egotistical point of view that cannot tolerate criticism. In other words, a point of view like that of Michele Bachmann. Those Anonymous choads have become like the people they say they’re fighting. Nietzsche and Orwell described how that happens.

re: #482 lawhawk

Yeah, there’s a few people complaining that there’s no way you can mint a $1t coin because it would be the size of the Titanic if minted in platinum. That, of course, ignores that the government can set the value of a piece of paper or coin at whatever denomination it sees fit. The Mint sets the price of a coin of a certain size as a quarter dollar, but the value of the actual metal is a few pennies (it’s actually most cost effective for the mint to strike a quarter than a penny, which is an argument to eliminate the penny from circulation due to costs to make).

People like to think that the value of money, or anything for that matter, is ‘real’. But unless you’re measuring something that occurs in the real universe, like matter or energy, all values are imaginary. Even in the exceptions the value system we apply is arbitrary.

As people converting Celsius to Fahrenheit can tell you.

Also, doesn’t the first amendment apply to the GOVERNMENT ONLY?

As in the government is the only entity that does NOT have a right to prohibit speech?

If I launch a DDos attack against a non-government entity…how do my free speech rights factor into that? Is anonymous saying it’s the same as holding a physical protest on the public property outside the company’s doors?

Congress cannot make laws abridging your freedom of speech, but it can make laws protecting it and must in fact do so if freedom is to mean anything.

Canada has eliminated the penny SO WHY DO I HAVE ALL THESE LAME CANADIAN PENNIES?

Yes, a method of getting around the “We’ll never raise taxes” meme.

Now all sales tax calculations have to be rounded up to the nearest nickel. Which will result in a steady flow of income for the federal government.

They also ‘harmonized’ the sales tax. It used to be there were federal and provincial sales taxes. Now there is a single sales tax collected by the federal government, which is then supposed to disburse the provinces’s share to the various provinces. I’m sure that they’ll find a way to hold on to that money as long as possible.

Because that is the way Our Dear Leader rolls.

Here ya go…

Make, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS), a legal form of protesting.

[derp]With the advance in internet techonology [sic], comes new grounds for protesting. Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS), is not any form of hacking in any way. It is the equivalent of repeatedly hitting the refresh button on a webpage. It is, in that way, no different than any “occupy” protest. Instead of a group of people standing outside a building to occupy the area, they are having their computer occupy a website to slow (or deny) service of that particular website for a short time.

As part of this petition, those who have been jailed for DDoS should be immediatly [sic] released and have anything regarding a DDoS, that is on their “records”, cleared.[/derp]

Not unless you assign real meaning to concepts such as decency, that is.

The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason.

Which is more or less true. For the most part, they are dirty little animals with huge brains and no pulse.

Ah, Arizona!

Two years to the day after Jared Lee Loughner killed six people and wounded 13 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, in Tucson, Ariz., people interested in ditching their guns could take their pick between two buybacks in town.

At one event, held by Tucson City Council member Steve Kozachik at a Tucson police station, members of the public could turn in a gun in exchange for a $50 Safeway gift card, while supplies lasted.

Kozachik chose the Tucson massacre anniversary for the buyback to keep the conversation about gun violence alive in the community, after the more recent Newtown, Conn., and Aurora, Colo., shootings.

At the other event a stone’s throw away, outgoing state Sen. Frank Antenori (R), who has reportedly butted heads with Kozachick for some time, decided to hold his own buyback, posting up near the city event and offering cash for guns to boost his own collection.

[…]

Kozachik insisted his event was neither anti-gun nor anti-Second Amendment. “If somebody has a firearm in their home that they’re simply uncomfortable having, this is giving them an opportunity to get rid of it and dispose of it properly,” he said. “Antenori wants to turn this thing into a firearms flea market, and he’s making a fool of himself.”

Help Wanted: Astronauts Needed for Mars Colony

Mars One, a nonprofit organization based in the Netherlands, intends to establish a human settlement on Mars in 2023.

They need astronauts.

Anyone on planet Earth can apply if they meet the basic requirements. But obviously, the job isn’t for just anyone.

Today, Mars One released its application criteria. Among other virtues, astronaut candidates must have “a deep sense of purpose, willingness to build and maintain healthy relationships, the capacity for self-reflection and ability to trust. They must be resilient, adaptable, curious, creative and resourceful.” And be at least 18 years old (no maximum age has been set).
